The Start of A Dynasty?

Recommended Posts

I have done these before and have always ended up stopping after a few years due to a lack of success. I will be continuing on this time but perhaps at a slower pace than before. I will try to be learning from the game and figuring out why things are happening and try to fix them. In the past I have had heavily superior teams lose to inferior ones on a consistent basis and fixing that will be the key to success.

I will be taking over as the head coach of the Abilene Christian Wildcats. Abilene Christian is located in Abilene, Texas and is a member of the Southland Conference. We have a prestige of 0 so it will be all uphill from here! I am anticipating that this will be a long and arduous journeys with many ups and downs.

We will be utilizing everything that is standard in modern day college basketball as far as rules and setup. We also have real coaches in the file (although the coach file is a few years old and will not be up to date).

This league will be starting in the year 2000. All of the history of college basketball does not exist and we will be starting this league in year one. There is no history and we will be rebuilding through history.

Our first order of business is to hire assistant coaches. We have a budget of $150,000 so we will only be able to hire coaches at the bare minimum of $30,000. </p><p> </p><p>

Here is our entire staff:</p><p> </p><p>

Recruiting Director: Claude Broderick (Niagara)</p><p>

Lead Scout: Devin Esquivel (UT-San Antonio)</p><p>

Coaching Assistant: Walton Eldred (Niagara)</p><p> </p><p>

Due to not having much money we were not able to sign anybody for a long time. Everyone declined our offers but these coaches had to keep dropping their demands and ultimately are much better than what we deserve. We will certainly take advantage of them though while they are here! It also is pretty crazy that we filled two positions with alums of Niagara University.</p>

<p>2000-2001 Season Preview</p><p> </p><p>

Here is our roster for the 2000 season. This is a roster completely devoid of talent and I would expect it to be a very bad season for us. Recruiting will be very important as I would guess that in 2 years from now our entire starting lineup will be made up of freshmen and sophomores. We have 4 seniors, 3 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 2 freshmen. As you can see we have 11 local players from Texas and two international players from Germany and Canada.</p><p> </p><p>

As you can see we have a few multi-star players who are interested in us. Being in Texas definitely has its advantages as there is a huge amount of local talent. We have 3 international players on our call list but I doubt we do much to pursue any of them given how expensive it is to scout them and how small of a budget we have. Right now we are going to scout as many players as possible and do whatever we can to try and get one or two of these 2-3 star recruits. We are trying to build this program from the ground up and hopefully some of these guys will buy in to being on the ground floor.</p>

<p>2000-2001 Schedule</p><p> </p><p>

Here is the schedule for the upcoming season. All of our non-conference games are against low prestige teams and this is solely in hopes that we can win some games and up our prestige (as well as up our attractiveness to recruits). We will most likely end the season bottom 5 in RPI due to this but that is something I can definitely live with for this season.</p><p> </p><p>

Before the season started SF Rich Eldridge was suspended due to academics. He was projected to play some serious minutes off the bench but will now be out until next semester when he will be eligible for reinstatement.

Abilene Christian (0-0) vs. Grand Canyon (0-0)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 66, Grand Canyon - 58. We led pretty much throughout this whole game and never let Grand Canyon get close. James Lindeman and Napoleon Ellingson both had 15 points with Lindemaan adding on 8 rebounds. Kevin Buckingham tied him with 8 rebounds as well and had 2 assists. This was a great start to the season but I don't want to get my hopes up as this was ultimately a terrible Grand Canyon team we played.

November 14, 2000

North Dakota (0-0) vs. Abilene Christian (1-0)

Final Score: North Dakota - 49, Abilene Christian - 57. Napoleon Ellingson led the team with 14 points including going 9 of 10 from the free throw line. We were able to overcome 17 turnovers to their 9 and we really need to tighten up the offense and force more turnovers on defense. Romeo Rinehart was the only other player in double digits with 10 points. Kevin Buckingham had 8 points and had 10 rebounds which was close to the first double-double in program history. This was a back and forth game and one I thought we would lose but we were able to pull out the win to go to a very surprising but welcome 2-0.

November 17, 2000

UMass Lowell (0-0) vs. Abilene Christian (2-0)

Final Score: UMass Lowell - 51, Abilene Christian - 52. This one was almost catastrophic as with one minute left we were up 4 but committed a foul on a made basket and then had a technical foul from arguing the call. That turned into a 5 point play for UMass Lowell that gave them a one point lead. Thankfully Romeo Rinehart made a bucket to give us the game-winning score! Napoleon Ellingson had 16 points and Kevin Buckingham had 11. Buckingham went 9-10 from the line but the rest of the team went 11-19 and missed free throws nearly cost us dearly in this one. Chris Vasquez narrowly missed a double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds. We only committed 11 turnovers in this one but also only had 5 assists. Bringing in playmakers will be key for the future. I did not expect we would begin the year 3-0 and this is an absolute dream come true for helping our prestige moving forward. Winning games is always better than losing, even if it is against bottom tier teams.

Breaking News

We received one vote in the Mid-Major Top 25! We are literally at the very bottom of the list, if you were to count down we would be #72. But we made it and that is so cool to see. There is a team with one vote as well (Sacramento State) who is yet to play a game so this obviously doesn't mean much but is still something we will take as a win.

November 20, 2000

Abilene Christian (3-0) vs. Omaha (1-2)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 56, Omaha - 44. Napoleon Ellingson had 19 points and went a perfect 14-14 from the free throw line. As a team we went 28-37 from the line ans Omaha got in foul trouble early. The next highest scorer was James Lindeman with 7. Kevin Buckingham led the team with 6 rebounds. We were crushed pretty hard on the boards as Omaha had 10 offensive rebounds to our two. Another very good win and we are an improbable 4-0!

November 25, 2020

Northern Kentucky (1-3) vs. Abilene Christian (4-0)

Final Score: Northern Kentucky - 57, Abilene Christian - 42. We were outclassed in this one as we only made 15 shots but committed 16 turnovers. Northern Kentucky was able to run their offense easily against us as they shot 52.5% against our 41.7%. This was a sloppy game for us but I can't be mad at all given that we've already picked up 4 unexpected wins and sometimes teams have bad games, especially with inferior players. Napoleon Ellingson topped the team with 9 points and Kevin Buckingham picked up 8 rebounds. We will certainly have to be better moving forward but I'm proud of the fight in our guys.

Team News

After this loss we dropped out of the Mid-Major top 25 poll as we no longer received a vote. No surprise here but since I had mentioned it the first time I figured I should mention us dropping out here.

November 28, 2000

Bryant (0-5) vs. Abilene Christian (4-1)

Final Score: Bryant - 39, Abilene Christian - 47.This one was a rough game as the halftime score was 19-14 with us in the lead and Bryant didn't reach double digits until two minutes left in the first half. The amazing thing is that despite only a 5 point difference we shot 47% from the field in the first half while they shot a whopping 12.5%!! They were able to get to the line and score otherwise they may have ended up with only 4-6 points in the first half. I don't believe this had much to do with our defense although I suppose if you bend my arm we will take credit. This is about what you would expect a game between these two teams to look like. Bryant committed 20 turnovers and made a total of 9 shots! Napoleon Ellingson had 16 points and Romeo Rinehart had 12. This one was absolutely ugly but we got out of it with a win and an impressive 5-1 record.

Recruiting News

Before our first game we already have 3 commitments for next season! With four scholarships I went hard after my top 4 players and honestly expected to at best land only one of them. I used my entire budget on them and it is very relieving to see that it paid off. The next guys on my list were all mediocre anyways so it would not have mattered if I was a bit behind on the recruiting trail with them. Here are the newest Abilene Christian commits!

Our first recruit is Preston Yap from Merkel, Texas. Yap is a 6'11" Center who projects to be a good inside scorer and strong rebounder. He also should provide superb interior defense but will not block many shots. He won't take many or any outside shots and won't do much distributing but we can live with that given that he can contribute with his shot as well as on defense. Yap is a 3 star recruit and the #354 overall player in the nation. Yap wanted to stay local and the other schools were Texas, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M but none of those schools offered him a scholarship.

Our second recruit is Joe Webb from Cisco, Texas. Webb is a 6'10" Power Forward who will be an ok scorer but not asked to be a constant threat inside. He is a great handler and you know once he gets the ball he will not turn it over. His passing is mediocre but is perhaps something he can improve upon. He is an absolute animal on the offensive glass and is another stellar defender. Him and Yap have the potential to become a great tandem down low. Webb is a 3 star recruit and the #467 overall player in the nation. The only other school he was interested in was UTEP but they did not offer him a scholarship.

Our 3rd recruit is Frank Landa from Kileen, Texas. Landa is a 6'3" Shooting Guard who can score from the inside and outside. He has the chance to be an elite 3 point shooter and he is a solid ball-handler and passer. His defense is mediocre but should not be a huge detriment to the team. The good news is that he is a very good rebounder and he is already advanced on offense and will immediately be plugged into the starting lineup. Lamda is a 3 star recruit and the #180 overall player. Baylor, TCU, UT-San Antonio, and Stephen F. Austin were all interested but none of them offered a scholarship.

Being in Texas certainly helped with all of these players as they were interested in attending Abilene Christian from day one. You can see from the schools they were interested in that staying in Texas mattered to them, but they all liked the elite schools in Texas and those schools were chasing better talent. We were able to snag these guys before the other schools could send offers out to them and we are very thankful. If they had waited until later in the year there is no chance we would have been able to sign any of these guys.

The only player to decline our scholarship was SG Earnest Dallas but he was a JC player and it probably is for the best that we stick to bringing in 4 freshmen and not a Juco player. He is a solid player on both sides of the ball though. He decided to attend Tulane. He was a 3 star recruit and #299 overall.

Abilene Christian (5-1) vs. NJIT (2-4)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 42, NJIT - 52. It was over 8 minutes until we scored our first points of the game but thankfully NJIT was cold as well and it made the score 7-2. Despite that we were down 27-15 at the half. Amos Boone led the team with 10 points off the bench (8-10 from the free throw line) and Kevin Buckingham had 7 rebounds. Romeo Rinehart had a rough game going 1-10 with 3 points. This is not a bad loss though as this is a solid NJIT team with wins over Navy and Grand Canyon and two of their losses were to Saint John's and Villanova.

Team News

We have replaced Kevin Buckingham in the starting lineup with Amos Boone.

December 6, 2000

Abilene Christian (5-2) vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore (1-5)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 45, Maryland-Eastern Shore - 62. Playing on the road is tough, especially when you commit 15 turnovers and only force 7. Chris Vasquez had 10 points and 9 rebounds and was by far the best player in this one.

December 10, 2000

Abilene Christian (5-3) vs. Cal State Bakersfield (2-5)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 58, Cal State Bakersfield - 55. We pulled out a close one here thanks to 19 points for Napoleon Ellingson. James Lindeman added on 14 and Romeo Rinehart had 10. Emil Haptonstall had the most rebounds with 6 off the bench. We are still trying to fix the turnover differential as we had 16 to their 10, but right now we have been fortunate enough to be able to overcome it.

December 12, 2000

Abilene Christian (6-3) vs. Grambling State (1-5)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 65, Grambling State - 68. This one was tied with 2 minutes to go but our players only took 3's from that point on which was disappointing because we didn't need a 3 and we shoot 3's at 28% which is 274th in the country. Napoleon Ellingson had 17 points and Emil Haptonstall was big off the bench with 13 points and 6 rebounds. We only had 5 assists on 25 made shots but we did win the turnover battle.

December 16, 2000

Abilene Christian (6-4) vs. Longwood (2-6)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 62, Longwood - 65 in Overtime. This one was an overtime thriller but the biggest story of this game was Napoleon Ellingson getting injured after seven minutes. Luckily he will only miss 8 days with a bruised jaw. Romeo Rinehart had 18 points and Chris Vasques had 10. We won the turnover battle again and I think we would have been able to pull out a win if Ellingson wouldn't have gotten hurt. The bench came up big with 18 points in his absence though. This road stretch has been very hard on us which comes as no surprise. This was our last OOC game and we hed to conference play after this.

Abilene Christian (6-5) vs. Stephen F. Austin (6-3)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 37, Stephen F. Austin - 61. We attempted 31 shots and had 21 turnovers as we were outclassed by a much better team. Romeo Rinehart led the team with 9 points. We only had 5 assists on 12 made shots and that is something we will need to greatly improve on next season.

December 27, 2000

Abilene Christian (6-6) vs. Northwestern State (4-6)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 47, Northwestern State - 61. This one was a 4-7 point game throughout before Northwestern State broke away late. James Lindeman had 11 points but both Chris Vasques and Emil Haptonstall both fouled out. We lost the turnover battle and had 8 assists on 14 made shots. This puts our losing streak at 4 but is finally the last of our 7 game road stretch.

December 30, 2000

McNeese (4-8) vs. Abilene Christian (6-7)

Final Score: McNeese - 50, Abilene Christian - 42. It wasn't until 13 minutes into the first half that we had more points (8) than turnovers (7). Thankfully McNeese didn't open a big lead so we were only down 14-8. We tend to keep all these games close but we've only gone on a run of more than maybe 6-0 one time this season. Games are usually very low scoring and eventually the other team gets hot or we just go on a 7-10 minute scoring drought. This will change as we get our recruits in but is tough to coach. We are currently averaging 51.3 points per game which is 326th in the country. A big factor in this is that we are 349th in assists per game, 347th in offensive rebounds per game, and 339th in total rebounds per game.

Central Arkansas (3-9) vs. Abilene Christian (6-8)

Final Score: Central Arkansas - 42, Abilene Christian - 52. We got out to a 18-0 lead in this one and had a dream start. Central Arkansas was able to score their first points until 6 and a half minutes into the game when they made two free throws. Central Arkansas didn't make their first basket until 5:57 left in the first half to make the score 21-5. At that point they were shooting 5.9% from the field. Unfortunately we let them back in the game and it was 25-15 at the half. They went on a 16-4 run to make it 25-21 which I really hated to see as it seemed like we had the game pretty easily won. We then stretched the lead to 37-25 as this was a pretty wild game that was just one run after another. But we got our first conference win!! We were out-rebounded by 12 and they had 4 more assists than us but we did win the turnover battle. They had 20 offensive rebounds! Romeo Rinehart and Chris Vasques each had 12 points and James Lindeman had 9. It feels good to get our first conference win!

January 6, 2001

Abilene Christian (7-8) vs. New Orleans (0-13)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 43, New Orleans - 42. This was one heck of an ugly game but we were somehow able to pull out the win. It wasn't pretty but at least we didn't give New Orleans their first win of the season. Both teams had 17 turnovers but we had 9 assists to their 4. James Lindeman had 12 points and Romeo Rinehart was next with 7 points. Chris Vasques had 7 rebounds. A nice little 2 game win streak is a sight for sore eyes and gives us our 2nd conference win of the season

January 10, 2001

Southeastern Louisiana (6-7) vs. Abilene Christian (8-8)

Final Score: Southeastern Louisiana - 65, Abilene Christian - 62. We got the ball down one with 25 seconds left but were called for 3 seconds in the key with 5 seconds left in the game. It was a brutal way to end the game and one I have personally never seen in real life ever happen in all my time watching basketball, but alas here we are! Napoleon Ellingson had a career-high 24 points (on only 9 shots) and Romeo Rinehart had 17 points. It was disappointing to lose this game as we had the lead up until the final minute.

January 13, 2001

Abilene Christian (8-9) vs. Nicholls (2-14)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 41, Nicholls - 38. This was a brutally ugly game but we came out with a win and that is all I can ask for! This season has gone a lot better than I expected and while we will be getting better next season so will all of our opponents. Napoleon Ellingson had 9 points and both Chris Vasques and Romeo Rinehart had 8. Vasques added on 7 rebounds and we had 7 assists to 14 turnovers. This moves us back to .500 on the season and to 3-4 in conference play against which is badly needed with two tough games up next on our schedule.

January 24, 2001

Stephen F. Austin (14-4) vs. Abilene Christian (9-9)

Final Score: Stephen F. Austin - 64, Abilene Christian - 32. We drew a whopping 19 fouls in the first half which is what kept us in this game for so long and down only 7 at the half. Unfortunately in the first half we also shot 8.3% from the field and missed a lot of free throws. The second half was a different story as we only scored 10 points in what turned into a total blowout. We went 5-32 from the field and 21-30 from the free throw line, only attempting 2 free throws in the second half. I'm not too disappointed with this one but the first half definitely gave us some real hope. Romeo Rinehart had 9 points and both Napoleon Ellingson and James Lindeman had 8 points.

January 27, 2001

Lamar (16-3) vs. Abilene Christian (9-10)

Final Score: Lamar - 70, Abilene Christian - 53. Napoleon Ellingson had 17 points and Chris Vasques added on 10 of his own. This one was an expected loss but at least it went better than the game against SFA. No surprise we lost these two but our next three are very winnable and I'm hoping we can come out with at least a couple wins.

January 31, 2001

Abilene Christian (9-11) vs. Houston Baptist (7-12)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 42, Houston Baptist - 48. James Lindeman led the team with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Napoleon Ellingson and Rubio Rinehart both had 6 points. This was a low scoring game with a lot of missed shots. This was one I am disappointed to lose and really thought we could win.

Recruiting News

We have our 4th and final recruit! SF Dudley O'Neil from Townsville, Australia has committed to play for us next season! This was an expensive one to recruit as our monthly budget is only $6,000 and for us to have a head coach visit alone cost $5,000. We were the only team interested in O'Neil which made things easy. Maybe he's a devout christian, who knows! He is a refined 3 point shooter who has the potential to be a stellar rebounder and defender. He should be capable at scoring from the inside but will mostly be an outside threat who helps us out on defense. He is not much of a ball-handler or passer though so look for him to be a catch and shoot type of guy.

New Orleans (3-18) vs. Abilene Christian (9-12)</p><p> </p><p>

Final Score: New Orleans - 63, Abilene Christian - 68. We completed the season sweep of New Orleans in a game that was much higher scoring than the last time around. We had 14 assists on 22 made shots and 3 starters scored in double digits. Chris Vasques had 15, James Lindeman had 12, and Napoleon Ellingson had 14. We were hit with 2 technical fouls in this game, one in the opening minute and another with under 2 minutes left. Both were by James Lindeman and he was ejected despite having only 4 fouls. This was a big win to get us to 10 wins on the season! </p><p> </p><p>

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 40, Central Arkansas - 58. Mark Bautista led the team with 7 points off the bench and Chris Vasques had 8 rebounds. We were thoroughly outplayed in this one but only committed 7 turnovers which was the one positive. </p><p> </p><p>

Abilene Christian (10-13) vs. Sam Houston State (15-8)</p><p> </p><p>

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 48, Sam Houston State - 82. This was a brutal one as we were outrebounded 43-20 and were thoroughly outplayed. Amos Boone had 12 points and Chris Vasques had 7 rebounds. I didn't expect to win this one and it doesn't surprise me to see us lose by such a big margin. On to the next game!</p><p> </p><p>

Northwestern State (16-8) vs. Abilene Christian (10-14)</p><p> </p><p>

Final Score: Northwestern State - 72, Abilene Christian - 62. We were the better team in this one but our horrendous quality of players cost us the game. We committed 21 turnovers to their 10 and we had 4 offensive rebounds to their 21! This is the type of game we will be able to win in a couple years once we can recruit players who belong at the D1 level. Napoleon Ellingson had 13 points and Romeo Rinehart had 12. This is the toughest game on our schedule and we are hoping to close out the season strong with 4 games against teams with losing records and two of those games coming at home. </p><p> </p><p>

Nicholls (3-22) vs. Abilene Christian (10-15)</p><p> </p><p>

Amos Boone twice argued fouls in the first half and was ejected 18 minutes into the game. We scored 37 points in the first half but only 7 in the first 11 minutes of the second half (Nicholls scored 22 points in that span). We allowed 6 free points from 3 technical fouls in this game and that is what cost us the game. Boone will be back on the bench for the final few games of the season. It is part punishment but he has also been subpar and I'd like to give Kevin Buckingham a chance to start again.</p><p> </p><p>

We finished 10th place in the conference. The Athletic Director's goal was the avoid last place so we at least succeeded in that. We did have 5 conference wins but it is worth noting that those wins came against Central Arkansas, New Orleans (twice), Nicholls, and Incarnate Word and that none of those teams had more than 6 conference wins or 8 overall wins on the season. Also none of them made the conference tournament. </p><p> </p><p>

Stephen F. Austin won the conference tournament and is a 14 seed. Best of luck to them! Also Lamar may not have been able to make the NCAA tournament but they made the NIT as a 5 seed. The other Southland teams to make tournaments were Northwestern State as a 13 seed in the CBI and Sam Houston State as a 8 seed in the CIT.</p>

<p>2000-2001 Season Wrapup</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>2000-2001 Season Wrapup</strong></p><p> </p><p>

We have come to the end of the regular season and it is time for the postseason. Before getting to that here is a quick rundown on the season. The player of the year in the Southland Conference was PG David Dilworth from Stephen F. Austin. Dilworth averaged 12.8 PPG, 5.2 RPG, and 3.1 APG. The freshman of the year was SF Herbert Hanson from Lamar with 9.3 PPG, 5.7 RPG, and 1.8 APG. The coach of the year was Pat Knight of Lamar. I am sure it comes as no surprise that none of our players made any of the All-Conference teams. We are hoping to see at least one of our recruits make the All-Freshman team next year though.</p><p> </p><p>

<p>March Madness</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>March Madness!</strong></p><p> </p><p>

It is time for the inaugural NCAA tournament! Good luck to every team that made it!</p><p> </p><p>

First up is the West Region!</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="<a href="https://imgur.com/vh9hhfi" rel="external nofollow">https://imgur.com/vh9hhfi"><img</a> src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/vh9hhfil.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/vh9hhfil.png"</a> title="source: imgur.com" /></a></p><p> </p><p>

This region had a pretty boring first round as the only upset was 11 seed Oklahoma over 6 seed BYU. Oklahoma followed that up by trouncing 3 seed Wake Forest in the 2nd round. The Sooners weren't done there as they beat 2 seed Illinois in the Sweet 16 before falling to 1 seed UCLA who advanced to the Final Four! </p><p> </p><p>

Next up is the Midwest Region!</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="<a href="https://imgur.com/W2XLxdS" rel="external nofollow">https://imgur.com/W2XLxdS"><img</a> src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/W2XLxdSl.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/W2XLxdSl.png"</a> title="source: imgur.com" /></a></p><p> </p><p>

This region had a lot more happening in the first round and the biggest upset was 13 seed Northern Iowa beating 4 seed Marquette. 12 seed Minnesota topped 5 seed Memphis to set up a 12 vs. 13 matchup in the 2nd round! 10 seed North Carolina also beat 7 seed Illinois State. This region had our Southland representative Stephen F. Austin who fell to 3 seed Arizona by 15 in the first round. Minnesota won the 12 vs. 13 matchup to advance to the Sweet 16 and 6 seed Creighton pulled off a mini-upset vs. 3 seed Arizona to do the same. Oklahoma's run fell short as they lost to 1 seed Oklahoma State and 2 seed Wisconsin took down Creighton. Wisconsin won the battle of the heavyweights and will advance to the Final Four!</p><p> </p><p>

Next is the South Region!</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="<a href="https://imgur.com/TEjdjwI" rel="external nofollow">https://imgur.com/TEjdjwI"><img</a> src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/TEjdjwIl.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/TEjdjwIl.png"</a> title="source: imgur.com" /></a></p><p> </p><p>

We had two big upsets in this region as 11 seed Milwaukee beat 6 seed Texas and 10 seed Richmond (my alma mater) beat 7 seed Ohio State! In the 2nd round 8 seed Temple beat 1 seed Xavier but both Richmond and Milwaukee saw their dreams fall short. 4 seed West Virginia handled Temple in the Sweet 16 to set up a matchup with 3 seed Kentucky in the Elite Eight. West Virginia won that matchup and will be going to the Final Four!</p><p> </p><p>

Last we have the East Region!</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="<a href="https://imgur.com/R3WCebB" rel="external nofollow">https://imgur.com/R3WCebB"><img</a> src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/R3WCebBl.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/R3WCebBl.png"</a> title="source: imgur.com" /></a></p><p> </p><p>

This region had the biggest first round upset as 14 seed Cal State Northridge beat 3 seed Dayton by 12! The magic didn't last though as Northridge then lost to 6 seed Florida. Florida kept the magic alive though as they took down 2 seed Cincy and then 1 seed Louisville to advance to the Final Four!</p><p> </p><p>

Now for the Final Four!</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="<a href="https://imgur.com/3HFOxY0" rel="external nofollow">https://imgur.com/3HFOxY0"><img</a> src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/3HFOxY0l.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/3HFOxY0l.png"</a> title="source: imgur.com" /></a></p><p> </p><p>

UCLA took down West Virginia in a close one in the first game and Wisconsin easily beat Florida to set up our championship game! The championship was never all that close as UCLA won by 11 and took home the inaugural NCAA tournament trophy! Congratulations to the Bruins who came in as the #1 overall seed and backed it up! This Final Four had 1, 2, 4, and 6 seeds showing that the top teams weren't as good as expected!</p>

<p>2000-2001 Senior Appreciation Day</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>2000-2001 Senior Appreciation Day</strong></p><p> </p><p>

We have 4 seniors who will be departing us and this post is to pay homage to them. Two of them were starters this year and the other two only played sparingly.</p><p> </p><p>

Our first man up is SG Napoleon Ellingson. Ellingson was our starting SG all season and averaged 11.3 PPG, 2.5 RPG, and 1.4 APG. He was named player of the game 5 times and had career highs of 24 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. He also had the most free throws made in a game in the entire Southland Conference this year with 14. He leaves this team as the highest scoring player in program history as well as the highest scoring game with the 24 points (he also holds spots 2, 3, and 4 on the list). </p><p> </p><p>

We went 11-18 this season which was better than I expected. We had some rough stretches and lost to some pretty bad teams but we also had a few narrow victories that could have easily been losses. Look for this number to increase next year as these incoming 4 freshmen look like they are already more developed than our current starters already are.</p><p> </p><p>

We were 343rd this season in points scored as well as defensive rebounds. We were dead last in offensive rebounds and 347th in assists. On the defensive side we were 12th in points allowed, 3rd in assists allowed, 9th in blocks allowed, and 10th in defensive rebounds. This is pretty useless to look at though because we played at a slow a pace as possible and also played all of the worst teams in the country which led to a lot of low scoring games. Teams scored fewer than 50 points against us 8 times this season and 3 of those times our opponents scored under 40 points. I also want to note that we reached 10 assists as a team in only 7 games this season.</p><p> </p><p>

This class is so much better than I ever expected but we got lucky with 3 local players who were all only considering in-state schools. O'Neill had no other schools in on him so we also got very lucky there.</p><p> </p><p>

We will also most likely be getting two walk-on players this year. </p><p> </p><p>

Our recruiting class ranked #97 in the nation and #2 in the conference. Nobody in the conference recruited a player better than 3 stars. This is absolutely huge for us. I absolutely do not expect to bring in another class like this ever but we are very thankful and I cannot wait for these players to grow together and lead our team.</p>

As you can see we have 7 upperclassmen as well as 6 freshmen. Two of these freshmen are walkons. Our two walkons are Jerald Zimmerman and Eugenio Albano. Zimmerman was a 1 star recruit and the #1,407 overall player and Albano was a 1 star recruit and the #1,800 overall player. To be completely honest these guys are both better than the upperclassmen we already have on the team which shows how little talent we have. There is a good chance these guys play serious minutes this season. These next two years will be crucial as we will fill 3 scholarship spots this year and 4 more the next.

Here is our call list for the upcoming season:

Our budget was increased this year so instead of $6,000 per month to spend on recruiting we will have $6,250. This is a small change but will help as every dollar really counts when we have so little to spend. As you can see we do not have the same good fortune as last year where a ton of high quality players are interested in us. That was an anomaly. I thought about going after some higher type guys with "Average" interest but with how little money we have I think right now the best bet is to try and secure one or both of the 3 star guys interested. I will be scouting a lot of these guys and seeing how they are. Right now I would say our biggest need is at PG and I added a few guys with high assist rates in here.

Here is the preview for the 2001 season!

Athletic Director Goal

Our AD's goal is the avoid last place in the conference. This is basically the smallest goal that could be set forward and I hope we are able to reach it again after succeeding last year. This year will have its ups and downs with 6 freshmen playing meaningful minutes but I believe we will be a better team than next year. We also saw our RPI rise from 0 to 1 this offseason!

Schedule

We improved our strength of schedule but not by much. We still went after the low prestige teams but didn't pick only the bottom of the barrel like last year. It still is going to be a very weak schedule but gives us a chance to at least have a RPI that isn't bottom 3 in the nation.

Here is our starting lineup for the 2001-2002 season!

C: Joe Webb (FR)

PF: Preston Yap (FR)

SF: Dudley O'Neil (FR)

SG: Frank Landa (FR)

PG: Romeo Rinehart (SR*)

6th - PG Jerald Zimmerman (FR)

7th - PG Rickie Fullerton (SR*)

8th - PF Chris Vasques (JR*)

9th - SG Mark Bautista (SO)

10th - SF Eugenio Albano (FR)

11th - C Amos Boone (SO*)

12th - C Emil Haptonstall (SR*)

As you can see we have 4 freshmen in the starting lineup! There is a decent chance we are the only team in the country this year that will be doing that. Romeo Rinehart rounds out the starters but expect to see a lot of Zimmerman and Fullerton as well. Rinehart is not all that great as a distributor so he may be supplanted in the lineup by Rickie Fullerton at some point to help guys get more open looks. Last year Rinehart averaged 1 assist per game in 29 minutes while Fullerton averaged 1.2 per game in 19 minutes. I anticipate that in most of our games 10-11 of these guys will get in at some point. Webb has 0 stamina so Vasques will be in the game a lot.

The preseason #1 team is Wisconsin. The only other team to receive any votes was Syracuse. BYU is the preseason #1 in the mid-major poll. UConn, Temple, and Xavier also received votes.

North Dakota (0-0) vs. Abilene Christian (0-0)

Final Score: North Dakota - 65, Abilene Christian - 52. It only took 37 seconds for us to have an all freshmen lineup on the court for the first time this season! Romeo Rinehart picked up two quick fouls and was sent to the bench early. We had assists on each of our first 3 made shots of the game which was so nice to see. The downside was that we didn't record our 4th assist until 2 minutes into the second half and finished the game with only 5. Rebounding is still a problem as we allowed 11 offensive boards. We only forced 4 turnovers and shot 5-29 from 3. Like I said, there will be growing pains but this team already looks so much better than last year. We won't shoot 17% from 3 every game. Frank Landa had 8 points and 11 rebounds in his debut and Preston Yap had 8 points and 10 rebounds. We had 13 offensive boards which we only did one time all of last season. Preston Yap had 7 of those which is the most in a game ever for us. Landa's 11 rebounds was also the most in a game in program history. Dudley O'Neil had 18 points to go with 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Him and Landa went a combined 5-19 from deep and the rest of the team went 0-10. This was the most team rebounds we had in a game in program history with 41. Funny thing is the 2nd most was to this same North Dakota team last season. Joe Webb fouled out in his debut in 15 minutes but had 2 points and 3 rebounds. Jerald Zimmerman had 2 points and 3 rebounds and Eugenio Albano had 5 points. We may have lost but this game has me very excited!

November 20, 2001

North Carolina Central (0-0) vs. Abilene Christian (0-1)

Final Score: North Carolina Central - 78, Abilene Christian - 74. Back to back turnovers inside 2 minutes did us in here as we had 14 turnovers to their 10. We upped our assist total to 10 though and despite losing this was still an encouraging game. Frank Landa led the charge with 28 points, a new school high! He also added on 7 rebounds and an assist. Dudley O'Neil fouled out but had 12 points in his 17 minutes. Joe Webb played 27 minutes and had 9 points and 7 rebounds. The story of this game was rebounding as we allowed NC Central to bring down 20 offensive rebounds. These are things that happen with young teams. I would have loved to see us win this one and the fans will be disappointed but it appears we have some very promising freshmen. We may have gotten better this year but so did all of the other bottom tier teams. This was the most points we have scored in program history.

November 23, 2001

Dartmouth (0-2) vs. Abilene Christian (0-2)

Final Score: Dartmouth - 62, Abilene Christian - 69. We let a 15 point lead slip away but were able to regain the lead and finish off the game. We were a putrid 20-32 from the free throw line which will have to improve but we did have 14 assists which tied for most in team history. Romeo Rinehart had 5 assists which is the most by a player in one game in school history. Frank Landa had 21 points and 9 rebounds Preston Yap had 12 points with 7 boards. Joe Webb had 6 points and 9 rebounds. Webb has not been doing much scoring but has made a serious impact on the glass. We allowed only 6 offensive rebounds this game while having 8 of our own.

November 27, 2001

Sacramento State (0-1) vs. Abilene Christian (1-2)

Final Score: Sacramento State - 76, Abilene Christian - 85. Frank Landa had a gem of a game with 27 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. Romeo Rinehart had a nice game as well with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Preston Yap added 11 points and Dudley O'Neil had 10 points.

Recruiting News

We have amazing news to share! PG Miguel Cabrera from Weatherford, Texas has accepted our scholarship offer. Cabrera is a 2 star recruit and #672 overall in the country. We believe we have found a real gem here though as Cabrera is already a refined shooter as he can score from the inside, mid-range, and from deep. He is an adept ball handler with the potential to rack up a ton of assists. His defense is the only area where he is lacking but even then he is solid and not a complete liability. We think this kid can be special and I am so incredibly excited to bring him in. We beat out UT-San Antonio in signing him.

We also had a scholarship declined by PF Michale Barker who has decided to attend Oral Roberts.

Abilene Christian (2-2) vs. Prairie View A&M (1-2)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 57, Prairie View A&M - 72. Prairie View A&M didn't miss their first shot until the 12:04 mark in the first half. We were incredibly lucky to only be down 7 at that point. This was one of those growing pain games. We had twice as many turnovers and we didn't have a single steal. I'm trying to wrap my head around how last season teams could barely score 40 when playing us and this year they are reaching 70+ with ease. They shot 50% from 3 so losing by 15 was actually surprising. Frank Landa had 17 points and 4 rebounds to lead the team. Jerald Zimmerman had a great game off the bench with 9 points and 3 rebounds.

December 5, 2001

Abilene Christian (2-3) vs. Bryant (1-5)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 65, Bryant - 35. We went on a 14-0 run to start the game and we never looked back. We held Bryant to 24% from the field while shooting 50% ourselves. We shot 9 of 17 from 3 which shows how potent our offense can be. We did have 16 turnovers in this one though so there is still room for improvement. Frank Landa is showing his potential with 21 points (6 of 6 from 3) and 6 rebounds. He's averaging over 20 points per game as a freshman. I know the quality of our opponents has not been good but that is still very big. He's averaging 55% from the field and from 3 and the only downside right now to his shooting is that he is 59% from the free throw line. His 20.3 PPG is currently 30th in the nation and 3rd among all freshmen. Romeo Rinehart had 12 points and 2 rebounds and has been a pleasant surprise this season as he has outperformed expectations and has been our #3 scorer. Preston Yap had only 3 points but he added on 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Dudley O'Neil had 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. The bench even performed well as Jerald Zimmerman had 6 points and 6 rebounds and Chris Vasques had 5 point and 6 rebounds.

December 9, 2001

Abilene Christian (3-3) vs. SIU-Edwardsvile (1-4)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 71, SIU-Edwardsville - 62. Frank Landa had 22 points and 3 rebounds and Dudley O'Neil had 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Man I am excited about these guys! Landa and O'Neil may be the two "star" freshmen in terms of points but I don't want anybody to forget about Webb or Yap. They may not be the focal point of the offense but they are young big men holding their own. Yap had 9 points and 9 rebounds and Webb had 8 points and 3 rebounds. Jerald Zimmerman again was a sparkplug off the bench with 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. We allowed SIU to shoot 52% from the field which is going to need to improve. We also went 14-21 from the free throw line and fortunately that did not cost us. Chris Vasques was a spark off the bench as well with 5 points and 5 rebounds.

December 15, 2001

Abilene Christian (4-3) vs. Northern Kentucky (2-4)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 52, Northern Kentucky - 55. Northern Kentucky shot 57% from the field as our defense has continued to be abysmal. The only reason this game was close was that they went 11-25 from the line. We committed 16 turnovers but they had 14 of their own. Frank Landa went 3 for 16 from the field and had 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. Dudley O'Neil tried to pick up the slack with 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists. Chris Vasques was great off the bench with 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Team News

Rickie Fullerton left the game against Northern Kentucky with a concussion and will out for about 32 days.

December 21, 2001

Abilene Christian (4-4) vs. Army (0-8)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 64, Army - 73. This was a rough one to lose and was one of those growing pain type of games. Army shot 58.5% from the field and we shot 40.8%. Foul trouble caused us to get a lot of minutes from the bench and Chris Vasques came up big with 8 points. Romeo Rinehart tried to carry the team with 16 points and 4 assists while Joe Webb had 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists. While we may not be much better right now than we were last year this team is so much more exciting to watch than the one last year.

December 25, 2001

Grand Canyon (1-10) vs. Abilene Christian (4-5)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 62, Abilene Christian - 54. We were up 36-22 but then Grand Canyon went on a 31-12 run to take the lead as we couldn't buy a bucket or make a free throw. Their most efficient way of stopping us was by sending us to the line. This game was in the bag and it looked like Grand Canyon was about to roll over. Their run wasn't them playing insanely well but a product of us only making one field goal over a 15 minute span. Extreme growing pains in this one as we committed 18 second half fouls and had 15 turnovers. To be outscored 40-18 is just embarrassing and there will be a lot of windsprints after this one. Jerald Zimmerman had 12 points off the bench and Romero Rinehart had 13 points to go with 4 rebounds. We really need a bounceback win after this one.

December 29, 2001

Omaha (1-9) vs. Abilene Christian (4-6)

At halftime Omaha had 17 points and Frank Landa had 17 points. We had a 33-17 lead thanks to Landa's performance. The second half was the same as always though as we opened up a 17 point lead with under 10 minutes left but then let it become a 3 point game. We need to be able to close games and this one we only won because the clock ran out. Landa ended up with 28 points and 5 rebounds while Dudley O'Neil had 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Chris Vasques had 6 points and 5 rebounds off the bench and Joe Webb had 9 rebounds.

Team News

Erwin Burnside has been suspended for the 2nd half of the season due to academics. I also received a message that both him and Merlin Jarrell are unhappy with their lack of playing time. Obviously nothing will change now for Burnside but Jarrell will not be receiving any playtime.

Recruiting News

We have a new recruit! C Jerry Navarrette has committed to play for Abilene Christian next season. Navarrette is from Kingfisher, Oklahoma. Navarrette is 1 star recruit and the #1,151 recruit in the nation and chose us over Oral Roberts. Navarrette is a decent scorer but is an animal on the offensive glass. He is also a solid defender and a great passer. He isn't somebody the offense will ever run through but should be a capable player when he is on the floor.

Abilene Christian (5-6) vs. Southeastern Louisiana (4-6)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 76, Southeastern Louisiana - 60. Frank Landa had 32 points and 7 rebounds in a performance that saw him go 9 for 9 from deep. Jerald Zimmerman had 12 points off the bench.

January 5, 2002

Abilene Christian (6-6) vs. Stephen F. Austin (6-7)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 55, Abilene Christian - 64. Even though we lost this was probably the best game we have played all season. We held a lead throughout most of the game but got cold once we needed help from the bench. Dudley O'Neil had 22 points and Frank Landa had 15 points and 6 rebounds.

January 9, 2002

Abilene Christian (6-7) vs. Central Arkansas (2-12)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 64, Central Arkansas - 54. Dudley O'Neil had 16 points and 8 rebounds while Frank Landa had 15 points. Preston Yap had 9 points and 11 rebounds while Joe Webb fouled out with 4 points. Chris Vasques was huge off the bench with 10 points and 6 rebounds and Jerald Zimmerman also had 6 rebounds off the bench.

January 12, 2002

Lamar (8-4) vs. Abilene Christian (7-7)

Final Score: Lamar - 74, Abilene Christian -73. Lamar made 9 straight 3's to close the game and we went 9-16 from the line in the final two minutes as we blew a 12 point lead with 90 seconds left. You cannot make this stuff up. Every game we lose in a new way that is just so wild and impossibly unrealistic. We have now had 15+ point leads in all 8 of our losses this year. We went 26-38 from the free throw line which is unacceptable. Dudley O'Neil had 25 points and 7 rebounds and Preston Yap had 13 rebounds.

January 16, 2002

Central Arkansas (2-13) vs. Abilene Christian (7-8)

Final Score: Central Arkansas - 62, Abilene Christian - 44. We were just absolutely embarrassed AT HOME to a team we beat easily a week ago. Looks like the team has given up after the ridiculous loss to Lamar. Looks like the rest of this season will be a lot of losses now. This should have been a 20 point win.

January 19, 2002

Sam Houston State (8-8) vs. Abilene Christian (7-9)

Final Score: Sam Houston State - 87, Abilene Christian - 79. Frank Landa had 28 points but was a putrid 9-25 from the field. Joe Webb had 14 rebounds.

January 26, 2002

TAMU-Corpus Christi (5-11) vs. Abilene Christian (7-10)

Final Score: TAMU-Corpus Christi - 81, Abilene Christian - 64. The team has given up on the season and I don't blame them. 19 for Frank Landa. 11 points and 12 rebounds for Chris Vasques off the bench.

Abilene Christian (8-12) vs. Sam Houston State (10-10)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 52, Sam Houston State - 58. Frank Landa had 22 points and 5 rebounds but nobody else had more than 8 points. Both Joe Webb and Preston Yap had 8 rebounds.

Incarnate Word (6-14) vs. Abilene Christian (8-13)

Final Score: Incarnate Word - 46, Abilene Christian - 72. Frank Landa had 21 points and Dudley O'Neil had 15. Joe Webb grabbed 8 rebounds and Preston Yap had 12. Jerald Zimmerman had 11 points off the bench. This was the type of win we needed.

February 13, 2002

Nicholls (3-19) vs. Abilene Christian (9-13)

Final Score: Nicholls - 52, Abilene Christian - 49. We finished the first half by missing the front end of the one and one on 3 straight possessions. We played down to a truly awful Nicholls team and even fouled them on the buzzer beater but they made it anyways so it didn't matter. I sound like a broken record but this is embarrassing. I know I have sounded harsh in some of these writeups but it is because I have high standards for this team and just hate seeing them lose games they should win. This is one of those growing pain games.

February 16, 2002

Abilene Christian (9-14) vs. Houston Baptist (4-19)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 66, Houston Baptist - 53. Preston Yap had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Dudley O'Neil had 17 points. Frank Landa had 11 points and 5 assists. After this win we are 5-8 in conference play which is trending up from last season when we went 5-13. This was our 10th win and we only won 11 games last season.

February 20, 2002

Southeastern Louisiana (12-11) vs. Abilene Christian (10-14)

Final Score: Southeastern Louisiana - 56, Abilene Christian - 59. Dudley O'Neil had 20 points with 8 rebounds and Preston Yap had 17 points and 9 rebounds. Chris Vasques had 4 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Frank Landa only had 4 points and took a backseat in this one. This win matched our total wins from last season and topped our conference wins from last season! I know I was very frustrated recently with these results but I'm proud of these freshmen. I need to remember that we have 6 freshmen playing meaningful minutes.

February 23, 2002

Abilene Christian (11-14) vs. McNeese (13-11)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 61, McNeese - 77. Dudley O'Neil had 14 points and Preston Yap had 11 points with 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Frank Landa got in foul trouble and was limited to 8 points. Jerald Zimmerman tried picking up the slack with 12 points in 26 minutes. An interesting thing to note is that right now we only have 4 players with a positive +/- on the season and that is our four freshmen starters. Romeo Rinehart and the bench are all negative. Bringing in this new wave of recruits should help us have more players who are able to help and not hemorrhage points when they go in the game. I didn't think these 4 freshmen would be so successful this early. Again it is worth noting our strength of schedule has been very weak but what they are doing is still impressive as you have to take into account that we are performing better than last season.

Stephen F. Austin (18-8) vs. Abilene Christian (11-15)</p><p> </p><p>

Final Score: Stephen F. Austin - 53, Abilene Christian - 54. This is the signature win we have been looking for! This is by far our biggest win in program history and the team has proven me very wrong. Since our 5 game losing streak when I claimed the team has given up we are 5-3. Dudley O'Neil led the way with 13 points and 10 rebounds to record the double-double. Jerald Zimmerman had 10 points off the bench and both Frank Landa and Romeo Rinehart had 8 points. The bench was huge for us in this one with 20 points.</p><p> </p><p>

New Orleans (13-14) vs. Abilene Christian (12-15)</p><p> </p><p>

Final Score: New Orleans - 66, Abilene Christian - 74. Frank Landa re-claimed his role as team MVP with 27 points and 6 rebounds and Preston Yap had a monster double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds, the most in program history for a single game. Joe Webb added on 8 points and 7 rebounds in a huge win that gives us a chance to end the season with a .500 conference record. Even if we lose our last game of the season I did not expect us to pick up 8 conference wins this season and I am incredibly proud!</p><p> </p><p>

Abilene Christian (13-15) vs. Northwestern State (14-14)</p><p> </p><p>

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 62, Northwestern State - 61. Frank Landa had 22 points and 5 rebounds and Dudley O'Neil had 12 points. This win moves us to 9-9 in conference play but due to tiebreakers we will miss out on the conference tournament. Either way this is a great way to end the season and makes me very excited for next season. Joe Webb sprained his ankle in this game and will be out for 15 days but that doesn't mean much since our season has come to an end. This also should greatly help our end of season RPI. For most of this season and last we were hovering between the 348-351 range but there is a chance we end up significantly better in RPI than last season.</p><p> </p><p>

Here is the final standings for the Southland Conference. We just missed out on making the conference tournament but I am very proud of the team for going .500 in conference play. </p><p> </p><p>

<p>Season Wrapup</p><p> </p><p>

Here is a quick wrapup for the 2001-2002 season!</p><p> </p><p>

The National Player of the Year was SR PG Cristobal Demars from Cal who averaged 17.5PPG, 8.1APG, and 3.4RPG. Freshman of the year was SG Stan Loveland from Memphis and Coach of the Year was Johnny Dawkins from Stanford. </p><p> </p><p>

For the Southland Conference the player of the year was Senior C Lanny McNeese. This doesn't surprise me one bit as McNeese was an absolute stud. He only averaged 8.8 PPG but he had 9.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.4 blocks. </p><p> </p><p>

The freshman of the year in the Southland Conference is Frank Landa! Congratulations to Landa on a stellar season that saw him be named freshman of the year, on the all-freshman team (no surprise there) as well as being on the 2nd team All-Conference team! It really looks like the sky is the limit for Landa.</p><p> </p><p>

Other Southland news is that Preston Yap and Joe Webb were both named to the All-Freshman team. Neither of them were anywhere near as impressive as Landa but it is nice to see them both recognized.</p><p> </p><p>

Now for the surprise of the year. The Southland Coach of the Year is....yours truly! I have to say I am very surprised with the news and didn't think this would be something I would even be in contention for. I will happily accept it though and it has helped my "Hot Seat" rating with the AD change to "Cool". Hopefully we can build on this next year!</p><p> </p><p>

Here is the end of season Top 25 going into the NCAA Tournament.</p><p> </p><p>

<p>March Madness!</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>2001-2002 March Madness</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<a href="<a href="https://imgur.com/Ptm6srs" rel="external nofollow">https://imgur.com/Ptm6srs"><img</a> src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/Ptm6srsl.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/Ptm6srsl.png"</a> title="source: imgur.com" /></a></p><p> </p><p>

First up is the West Region! This Region had a couple first round upsets as a 31-3 New Mexico State team that was a 12 seed took down 5 seed BYU and 10 seed Minnesota took down 7 seed South Carolina. The second round saw Minnesota take out 2 seed Stanford as well as 6 seed Western Kentucky take out 3 seed Oklahoma State. Western Kentucky beat Minnesota in the Sweet 16 to set up a matchup with 1 seed Wisconsin who took down 4 seed Dayton. Wisconsin won that matchup to punch their ticket to the Final Four!</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="<a href="https://imgur.com/D3bjWFK" rel="external nofollow">https://imgur.com/D3bjWFK"><img</a> src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/D3bjWFKl.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/D3bjWFKl.png"</a> title="source: imgur.com" /></a></p><p> </p><p>

Next is the Midwest Region! This Region had our Southland representative Stephen F. Austin who lost to 3 seed Michigan State. The Southland is still looking for our first tournament win. 10 seed Creighton took down 7 seed UMass to round out the surprises in the first round. Creighton followed that up by beating 2 seed UCLA to advance to the Sweet 16 where they fell to 3 seed Michigan State. 4 seed Kansas took down 1 seed Xavier in the Sweet 16 and then handled Michigan State to advance to the Final Four!</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="<a href="https://imgur.com/mhAE88T" rel="external nofollow">https://imgur.com/mhAE88T"><img</a> src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/mhAE88Tl.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/mhAE88Tl.png"</a> title="source: imgur.com" /></a></p><p> </p><p>

The South Region saw a huge upset as 14 seed Boston University took down 3 seed Arizona in a 19 point win! Unfortunately BU could not keep it going and lost to 6 seed North Carolina in the Round of 32. 7 seed Villanova took down 2 seed Florida and then North Carolina to advance to the Elite 8. They matched up with 1 seed Louisville in a thrilled but were unable to win. Congratulations to the Cardinals on making the Final Four!</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="<a href="https://imgur.com/BmKLMBE" rel="external nofollow">https://imgur.com/BmKLMBE"><img</a> src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/BmKLMBEl.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/BmKLMBEl.png"</a> title="source: imgur.com" /></a></p><p> </p><p>

Finally we get to the East Region. 10 seed Illinois beat 7 seed Georgia and 11 seed Green Bay took down 6 seed Cal. Green Bay fell by 3 to 3 seed Gonzaga in the second round and Illinois fell to 2 seed Syracuse. 5 seed West Viriginia took down 1 seed Kentucky in the Sweet 16 to setup a matchup with Gonzaga. Gonzaga took full advantage of not having to play the 1 seed to be the last team in the Final Four.</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="<a href="https://imgur.com/MNg7YN7" rel="external nofollow">https://imgur.com/MNg7YN7"><img</a> src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/MNg7YN7l.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/MNg7YN7l.png"</a> title="source: imgur.com" /></a></p><p> </p><p>

In our first matchup Wisconsin took down Louisville by 17 in the battle of the 1 seeds. Our second game saw Kansas beat Gonzaga by 20 as neither game was close. The national championship did not disappoint as overall #1 seed Wisconsin beat 4 seed Kansas to claim the national championship. Big Cat would be going wild right now! Congrats to the Badgers!</p>

Congratulations to Maryland on winning the NIT! This was their second appearance in the NIT and their first time winning it! The Southland Conference did not have a representative in the NIT this season.</p><p> </p><p>

Next up is the CBI!</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="<a href="https://imgur.com/je3gchE" rel="external nofollow">https://imgur.com/je3gchE"><img</a> src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/je3gchEl.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/je3gchEl.png"</a> title="source: imgur.com" /></a></p><p> </p><p>

Congratulations to St. Joseph's on winning the CBI! This was the program's first ever appearance in the CBI! The Southland Conference also failed to place a team in this year's CBI.</p><p> </p><p>

Last we have the CIT!</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="<a href="https://imgur.com/qiQbiLg" rel="external nofollow">https://imgur.com/qiQbiLg"><img</a> src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/qiQbiLgl.png" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/qiQbiLgl.png"</a> title="source: imgur.com" /></a></p><p> </p><p>

Congrats to Southern Mississippi on winning the CIT! This was their first every appearance in the tournament. Lamar represented the Southland Conference in the CIT but lost in the first round as a 10 seed to Hawaii.</p>
