2001-2001 Senior Appreciation Day

It is that time of year folks! The time to pay homage to our seniors as they leave us. This year we had 3 seniors who varied from starter to last man off the bench.

Our first senior is PG Romeo Rinehart from Joaquin, Texas. Rinehart appeared in 58 career games at Abilene Christian and started all of them. He averaged 7.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. He had career highs of 18 points, 5 assists, and 6 rebounds. Rinehart was nothing special as far as talent goes but he was an important member of our team this year.

We vastly improved this year by going 14-15 overall and 9-9 in conference play. We could have made the conference tournament and secured an overall record of at least .500 but blew a double digit lead to Lamar with 90 seconds left. That one still leaves a bad taste in my mouth but the team was resilient late in the year. We won 5 of our final 6 games when the team could have rolled over. This year in minutes per game freshmen were #1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 9 on that list. That shows how much we can improve moving forward. I expected us to be better than last season as far as ability but wasn't sure with a ton of freshmen that it would show in the win column. We got better but a lot of other teams got better too. This will be something to build off and given that we are only losing 1 player who played serious minutes for us (Rinehart) and are replacing him with what we view as a high-end recruit who is already more advanced, I think we can improve on this record next season. All 5 of our starters this season had a positive +/- but everyone on the bench had a negative one. That goes to show that the starters were good but the bench was very poor which will improve as we are able to recruit more players.

The metric that stands out to me the most in this is our points per shot taken. We are 36th in the nation in that stat which doesn't surprise me given how well we played and how easily we were able to score this year without a distributor. Our guys had to create their own shot a lot of the time, as evidenced by us being 295th in in assists. You will even notice that we were 231st in points per game. We were best in the conference in 3 point percentage which is an encouraging sign. A lot of our defensive stats are misleading as we played a horrendously weak schedule. It says more about the lack of quality in our opponents than about our own defense.

2002 Offseason

2002 Offseason

There was a little bit of conference movement this offseason with Western Kentucky leaving Conference USA for the AAC and East Carolina taking their place. Xavier and TCU swapped spots as well as Xavier joins the Big 12 and TCU joins the Big East.

We have decided to cut two walkons from the team in order to free up the spots for scholarship players. It was difficult but sophomores Jerald Zimmerman and Eugenio Albano will both be cut from the team. I will give them a quick appreciation post here.

SG Jerald Zimmerman played in 29 games for Abilene Christian as a freshman, all off the bench. He averaged 6.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. He was a walkon from Brookshire, Texas who had career highs of 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Zimmerman helped us out a lot as a freshman but quite simply is not as good as John Acuff who is a walkon freshman this year.

Eugenio Albano is a SF from Cado Mills, Texas who appeared in 29 games as a freshman and averaged 1.7 points, 0.5 rebounds, and 0.2 assists per game. His career highs were 8 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. Albano played some minutes for us last season but just like Zimmerman has an incoming freshman who is of the same quality already with slightly higher potential. Right now these walkon cuts are difficult because these guys are better than our scholarship players that are juniors and seniors but we need the scholarship spots so badly and can't afford to burn two of them for a year.

Our biggest problem this year will be our lack of depth. The reason for this is that none of our juniors or seniors are any good and any time they are on the court it will hurt us. Mark Bautista is already unhappy and since he will not receive any play time this year there is a good chance he transfers out at year end. This year expect to see the same starting lineup just with Miguel Cabrera running point in place of Rinehart.

It appears that some players have taken note of our success and rise the past couple of seasons. Perhaps the Coach of the Year award helped or perhaps they saw the freshman of the year and 3 players on the All-Freshman team and realized they have a chance to contribute early. I'm looking forward to scouting and meeting these players and finding the right fights for our program! We have 4 scholarships available so

2002-2003 Season Preview

2002-2003 Season Preview

This year I upped our schedule a bit. I didn't schedule the same low prestige teams but instead went for teams that are a bit better in the prestige department but had disappointing seasons. We scheduled two teams from Power-5 conferences and even get a crack at one of them at home. I figure we will probably have a couple OOC losses anyways and it looks better to lose to a good team than to lose to a team that ends up being very bad.

AD Goal

The goal again set forward by the Athletic Director is to avoid last place in the conference. We were able to up our prestige from 1 to 2 last season so we are hoping to again see that take a rise. I have high hopes for this team given our sophomore class but turning around this program is not going to be something that happens overnight. There is going to be a lot of blood, sweat, and tears that go into it.

November 2002

Team News

Freshman walkon SF Cliff Dawson has been ruled academically ineligible for the first semester. This is a big blow as he was expected to give us some minutes at the 3. Our bench was already going to be a weak link for us but it looks like we will have to rely extra on the starters now. Remember to temper expectations this season. We may not be able to replicate last season's success but 9 of our 10 best players will be underclassmen.

Grand Canyon (0-0) vs. Abilene Christian (0-0)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 73, Abilene Christian - 74. Frank Landa had 22 points and Dudley O'Neil had 16 points to go with 8 rebounds. This Grand Canyon team might not win 3 games this season as their talent pool is absolutely atrocious. Winning this game by single digits is absolutely unacceptable and tells me that we are not a good team. This should have been a blowout. Miguel Cabrera had 11 points and 5 rebounds in his debut and Michael Shaver had 8 points. Preston Yap had 5 points and 8 rebounds while Joe Webb had 6 points and 4 rebounds.

Abilene Christian (1-0) vs. Florida Atlantic (0-0)

Going to put this series on hold a bit while I learn more about this game. I simmed this game 20 times as a test. 10 times I did "sim day" and the other 10 actually watched out the game. We went 10-0 when I simmed through the game to the next day. We went 0-10 when I sat through the play by play. I went ahead and simmed the next game 10 times and the exact same thing happened, 5-0 and 0-5 for both. I love watching the play by play of the game but if I'm not able to do that because we lose (our first two seasons almost all of our wins came from me fast simming and all but 3 or 4 losses were from me watching the sim through). If anybody else has encountered this I would love to hear a fix but unfortunately every time I do a sim through of this game after about 3 seasons the game seems to break itself and becomes unplayable.
