Campeonato de la Lucha Libre de Mexico (CLLM)

Mexico City, Mexico - Campeonato de la Lucha Libre de Mexico is the oldest remaining wrestling promotion in the world, having been founded by Humberto Gallardo in 1934. CLLM still holds on to the traditions set out by its founder, and the current owner is Humberto's grandson Javier.

Recently CLLM's dominance on lucha libre has come under attack from ILL. Imperio's sports entertainment twist on lucha libre has proved popular with youngster, an audience CLLM has always struggled to attract.

With the battle lines drawn, it will be up to Javier Gallardo to keep his grandfather's dreams alive.

Disaster struck CLLM in August of 2015 as Acuatico suffered a pelvic fracture at the hands of El Gigante. Already on the back foot due to several injuries over the course of 2015, Acuatico's injury was a major blow to CLLM.

Taking advantage of this and key jumps, ILL finally managed to shorten the gap between them and their eternal rivals CLLM and for the first time since their formation, ILL look set to become the undisputed #1 in Mexico.

The gap between Campeonato Lucha Libre de Mexico and Imperio de la Lucha Libre quickly shortened in August 2015 when disaster struck CLLM. Acuatico's pelvic fracture at the hands of El Gigante was just another injury to the long list built up on the CLLM roster over the course of 2015. Not only did it leave the biggest star in CLLM on the shelf, El Gigante found himself out of a job and the CLLM owner Javier Gallardo reshuffled his booking team with veteran luchador Nocturno replacing the also fired Hector Yzaguirre.

ILL took the opportunity and launched themselves as a clear #1 in Mexico with their sports entertainment approach to lucha libre. Full of bold colours, gimmick matches, and crazy characters, there is always fun to be had at an ILL show. With the recent signings of Incognito and White Panther Jr., alongside the booming popularity of current ILL Campeon del Mundo Ahpuch, ILL prepared themselves to take over.

The war is just getting started and 2016 promises to be a wild year for both lucha libre companies. Who will come out on top by year's end?</div>

CLLM airs on Lucha Net tonight, the card is the usual trios lucha libre rules affairs as is tradition. They are looking to keep the Dirk Robertson/El Toro Tejano, Hombre Araña/Infierno, and Muchas Caras Jr./Astro Brasileño feud hot at the top of the card to kick off the new year.

ILL Ataque! was a middle of the pack show. Nothing necessarily stood out, which is not a good thing to start of the year. I don't know if they just wanted to get over that new year hump, but I hope everything works itself out come next week. They are riding a big wave of momentum, which will hopefully help them out.

The only notable storyline progression on the show was a face-to-face encounter between Alberto Marchena Jr. and El Hijo del Sultan after Sultan's match. Marchena wanted revenge from a blindside attack last week and the two ended up brawling. A match between the two should be scheduled for the Llamada Del Salvaje pay-per-view later this month but this is ILL so who knows if it'll ever happen. I would rate the show as a ***1/2, a good C+. It did 1,398,710 viewers for a 1.86 TV rating.

Dirk Robertson and Hollywood Giant attacked El Toro Tejano after the main event. Robertson tore at the bull's mask and drew blood. This feud is far from over and a Campeonato del Mundo CLLM match with Tejano challenging Robertson looks to be happening soon.

Nocturno, El Samurai

Nocturno had a backstage interview after his match and took the time to mock Acuatico's injury. El Samurai was walking by and heard the mockery. The two came face to face and ended up in a scuffle. A rivalry between these two lucha libre legends seems to be brewing.

Genghis II, Genghis III

In a shock, former Campeon del Mundo CLLM Genghis II came down to the ring after the opening match and introduced his son Genghis III as being the newest member of the CLLM roster. Genghis III promised that he will lead the Genghis legacy to new heights! He has big shoes to full but has a load of potential, if he keeps building the skills he developed on the indies.

Dirk Robertson, Muchas Caras Jr., Infierno, Astro Brasileño, El Toro Tejano, Hombre Araña

The main event was the match of the night. El Toro Tejano versus Dirk Robertson is a feud that is hot in these smaller markets for the annual CLLM New Year tour across Mexico, and Robertson, the champion, tearing away at Tejano's mask post-match in an attack should heat this up even more. Hollywood Giant has great presence and could be a very big deal for CLLM if they use him correctly - and here's hoping he doesn't turn out to be the El Gigante! The eventual title match between Robertson and Tejano should draw well. Keep an eye on the Infierno/Hombre Araña feud as well. They've been going at it for a few months, and this feud stems back to their respective debuts. This could end up the 2016 CLLM Feud of the Year!

The semi-main was just okay. Ala Dorado y Dos Aguilas are being positioned to challenge for the Campeonatos en Parejas CLLM sometime in the near future against champions Billy El Niño y Criatura Misteriosa, but the titles are an afterthought so who knows when that match will actually take place.

The third match of the night was average at best. It built to the backstage confrontation between El Samurai and Nocturno. Sugarskull does show a lot of promise and his team with Payaso Feliz could go somewhere down the line - El Carnaval could lead the tag division if CLLM ever decides to push the division.

The second match seemed to be a showcase for Máxima Velocidad Jr and El Maya. It seems like CLLM management see a lot of potential in both luchadors and they could be two of the "next big things" in lucha libre. It could be a few years until we see them in singles action for two reasons: a) they aren't ready for world title shots just yet, and b) that's just the CLLM way. I hope they get more chances to break out in 2016!

The opening bout wasn't very good. Negro Guerrero is quickly losing his in-ring ability but this team with his son his holding Niño Guerrero back.</div>
