Chaos ensues at El Hijo del Santo's press conference; TripleMania main event?

Hijo del Santo’s annual press conference came with a two major surprises. He explained it is important to him that someone carry on the Santo legacy. The surprise is he suggested it may be his daughter for the first time. This is much “Hijo del Santo is open to the possibility” rather than something she or him are actively working on. Hijo del Santo says his daughter has not trained in wrestling but does practice MMA (and hurt his neck with a hold.) Hijo del Santo’s son, Santo Jr., had been expected to continue the legacy. Hijo del Santo said his son is still working on his university degree and “if he wants to wrestle later, go ahead.” Santo Jr. has not wrestled in 18 months and had not been impressive up to that point. The quotes from Santo suggest he doesn’t expect both his son and daughter to go into wrestling, more “if my son ends up not doing it, maybe my daughter will.”

Hijo del Santo also said he doesn’t rule out a return to CMLL. He made similar comments a few months ago when he worked a Martinez Entertainment show about his willingness to go back to Arena Mexico, but things took a turn away from CMLL when Dr. Wagner Jr. showed up and interrupted the conference. Wagner effectively turned heel and called out Santo for refusing to work a schedule like him and leaving lucha libre behind over the years. Santo refused to get physical but Wagner jumped him with a chair and the two brawled around the conference room. Wagner got the upperhand by choking Santo with an extension cord and ripped off the legendary mask.

The attack was quickly shared online by AAA and this leads to the speculation of El Hijo del Santo returning to the company for TripleMania. This could end up the main event, with buzz around social media seemingly excited for a match between the two Lucha legends.

Another exciting opener to kick off an AAA show in 2020. The minis went all-out in an eight-minute match with Arez and Dinastia stealing the spotlight even with the Mascarita Dorada and Demus feud being featured. Laredo Boy did well and Mini Psycho Clown filled his role but Arez’ tangles and dives left Dinastia wanting to prove himself as the rightful champion. In the end, Dorada kept up his momentum as he took down Mini Psycho Clown and got the pinfall after Demus backed off, not wanting to take another fall to his foe. After the match, Arez officially challenged Dinastia to a future AAA Minis championship match, and Dorada laid down the challenge to Demus.

The second match wasn’t as good but still fun with the focus kept on the Big Mami and Nino Hamburguesa partnership, and Keyra and Villano III Jr. as future title contenders. Abismo Negro Jr. was passable, but Villano carried his team in terms of death-defying bumps and dives. Karis La Momia Jr. is really improving at a fast pace since he signed with AAA and could become La Parka Jr. sooner than later. Keyra nearly knocked Mami’s head off with a corner knee for the victory.

Dragon Bane be botchin’. With Laredo Kid’s return from Exatlon, it’s surprising to see his side take the loss here but Los Mercenarios are being built as strong contenders for the Trios titles in the future. Laredo Kid hasn’t missed a step since going to the island and Rey Horus continues to impress, but Dragon Bane didn’t catch one of Heidra’s dives and she crashed hard outside the ring. Medics came down to help her to the back. Texano Jr. and Escorpion took turns slapping the shit out of Bane’s chest and Texano pinned him for the win.

While they prepare for Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks at Rey de Reyes, Los Jinetes del Aire took the fall against Poder del Norte tonight. PdN is the best trios team in the world today, their moves as crisp as can be, but El Hijo del Vikingo amazed once again by flying all over the place. This was cut short, however, when #StrongHearts rushed the ring wearing AEW/OWE shirts and beat down the champions, referee El Hijo del Tirantes allowing it. With CIMA, El Lindaman, and T-Hawk doing the dirty work, it was easy pickings for Poder del Norte.

The team of Cinta de Oro, Muder Clown, and Pagano continue to turn heads with their violent no-nonsense attitude. Cinta de Oro, the former Sin Cara, has somehow turned into a very good hardcore worker and showcased that when the match was announced as having no rules. Los OGTs showed that they are a well oiled machine as a team but they just couldn’t keep up, especially after Murder Clown launched Chessman into a table from the top rope. Pagano got the victory on Averno after a chairshot to the head and the Air Raid Crash on Super Fly.

The main event was a lot of fun, shifting the focus from the recent main event La Faccion Ingobernable feud, with it becoming a free-for-all halfway through as everybody wanted to get the pin to be the last person to enter the Rey de Reyes tournament battle royal. The recently turned heel Dr. Wagner Jr., who has entered a blood feud with El Hijo del Santo, got into a scuffle with Psycho Clown and those two brawled around ringside to take them out of the match. Taurus went on a rampage and took out everybody in the ring, but he quickly fell victim to a Shooting Star Press from Aero Star for the final pinfall, who earlier in the match jumped off the scaffolding of the entrance ramp onto the other competitors. Aero Star will enter the Rey de Reyes last.

This is a last minute TV taping scheduled before Rey de Reyes. Seems like AAA forgot they had another week of television to fill before the big show. I'd say I was surprised but I'm not.

La Faccion Ingobernable has been renamed to simply Los Ingobernables. The main event looks to build the big AAA tag title match between the Lucha Brothers and LA Park & Rush at Rey de Reyes.

Dr. Wagner Jr. has fully turned rudo and looks to have reformed a partnership with rival Blue Demon Jr. after his attack on El Hijo del Santo. I expect Demon to be added to that big storyline ahead of TripleMania, there's lots of buzz about it online.

Expect the opener to be absolutely wild. #StrongHearts is doing a one-off for now, as preparation for Jinetes' clash with The Elite at Rey de Reyes. This match will probably end up very high on the Voices of Wrestling Match of the Year list. With #STH doing AAA, I'm not sure what this means for a Shun Skywalker return to the promotion.

AAA is back once again for the final (we promise this time!) show before Rey de Reyes! The opener is definitely on the AAA Match of the Year contender list with #StrongHearts making their AAA debut in a wild sprint opposite the Trios champions. A few exchanges between CIMA and Hijo del Vikingo stole the show, with Vikingo always looking impressive. Myzteziz Jr. and Octagon Jr. held their own against the Japanese trio as well, but Vikingo put things away with the 630° Senton on Lindaman. After the match, Los Jinetes del Aire thanked #StrongHearts for the strong competition and they promise to retain the AAA Trios titles against The Elite - in a match that will “change the world”.

While still good, the second match was an effective cool down following that opener. Australian Suicide and Vanilla set themselves up as challengers for Big Mami and Nino Hamburguesa’s Mixed Tag titles, but the main story was the continued rivalry of Pimpenela Escarlata and Mamba, with the addition, however, of up and coming Exoticos Dulce Kanela and Estrella Divina. The action was fine, with lots of comedy thrown in, but the rudos got the victory after Mamba fouled Pimpinela and rolled him up for the three.

The Karis La Momia Jr. story continues, with him once again falling short of a victory because he is not ready to carry the La Parka Jr. name. All three luchadors brought the fight, but Daga played his nonchalant egotistical heel role to perfection by making Lady Maravilla and Villano III Jr. do most of the work. Villano had a great exchange with Laredo Kid, a preview of Rey de Reyes, and got the win over Karis. After the match, Villano III Jr. and Laredo Kid got into a shoving match that was eventually stopped when Villano promised to take the AAA Cruiserweight championship and left the ring.

The weird bedfellows trio of Cinta de Oro, Murder Clown, and Pagano once again proved that opposites do attract by winning another match. While Los Mercenarios are a very fluid team, they just weren’t able to keep up with the plunder introduced by Cinta and the Clowns. Once Taurus was taken out of the match by a DVD through a table via the hands of Muder Clown, Pagano and Cinta de Oro unleashed a vicious steel chair attack that led to Pagano getting the win over Rey Escorpion. After the match, Poder del Norte ran down to the ring with chairs and a ladder and beat Cinta de Oro, Murder Clown, and Pagano into the mat. Poder del Norte stands tall tonight.

In a Rey de Reyes battle royal tournament preview, Drago, Psycho Clown, and Rey Horus took on Blue Demon Jr., Monsther Clown, and the newly turned rudo Dr. Wagner Jr. in a fun match. While Blue Demon Jr. reignited his feud with Drago, Dr. Wagner Jr. looked to send a message to El Hijo del Santo by battering Rey Horus in the head with a cinderblock at the end of the match as those two were paired off with each other. Former Los Psycho Circus teammates Psycho Clown and Monsther Clown squared off throughout the match, with the Ace of AAA getting the upper hand on Monsther and pinning his friend with a Canadian Destroyer.

The main event was absolutely wild as LA Park and Rush Toro Blanco previewed their upcoming fight against the Lucha Brothers at Rey de Reyes. Add in Aerostar and Ryu Lee opposite one another and you have magic. The action barely stayed in the ring, with Los Ingobernables controlling most of the match outside and in the crowd in a wild brawl. Rush and LA Park looked to do some damage ahead of their Tag title challenge and they did so, battering Pentagon Jr. and Fenix around the arena. In the ring, Ryu Lee and Aerostar traded momentum with some spectacular dives, but once Lee removed Aerostar’s mask - it was all over! Lee hit the Pheonix-Plex and got the pin, all while the Lucha Brothers and Park and Rush continued to beat each other into oblivion. After the bell, the brawl returned to the ring where La Bestia del Ring came down to aid Los Ingobernables. With the strong numbers game, Los did a number on their opponents but went running when the familiar music of Psycho Clown hit as he led the cavalry - consisting of Hijo del Vikingo, Murder Clown, Drago, Karis La Momia Jr., Puma King, and Rey Horus - to the ring! Los Ingobernables chose to fight another day and left quickly but the damage was done.

Will Los Ingobernables be able to capitalize on their attack when they face the Lucha Brothers in a Steel Cage match for the AAA Tag Team championships at Rey de Reyes?

Opener, the young heels have more of an upside so they get the win

No idea on RdR but Psycho is over so he makes sense

I love that u are doing something different. One or two pics might help as people don't necessarily know these people. I like the story in the opener. Favorite Luchadora is probably Maravilla because of that hair shaving angle in real life.

I'm really enjoying your diary and it's nice to have a Mexican fed showcased on here. The write-ups are good and clean looking. I agree with Aurora and Alpha2117, it would be awesome to have some pictures of the workers here and there, I know about 70% of them so every 3/10 workers I see on here I have no idea what they look like for example. I'm sure a lot of people know less than 70% too.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a big spike in cases in Mexico in the last few weeks. The Mexican goverment's initial laissez-faire handle on the situation seems to have exacerbated the situation. Since the closure of the borders around a week ago, tons of lucha libre shows are being postponed or just outright cancelled. CMLL announced that they are postponing all shows immediately, barring the Informa sit-down interview show. AAA has also announced a shutdown of shows that will take place after tomorrow's Rey de Reyes show. The card will change, which they haven't announced publicly yet, as no American wrestlers will be able to make it into the country. This scratches The Elite vs. Los Jinetes del Aire and the main event for the AAA Tag Team Championships (Fenix lives in California and will not be able to make it in for the show).

This is a very serious situation as the number of cases continue to grow everyday. Stay home, get yourself tested if you feel sick, and wear a mask if you absolutely need to go out.

After a card reshuffling due to the COVID-19 border restrictions, the what-could-be final AAA show in front of fans for a while kicked off with a very fun ten-man tag team match highlighting some recent undercard feuds. Masacarita Dorada and Demus wowed once again as fans continued to clamour for a lucha de apuestas between the two. The Exoticos fought out their differences when Estrella Divina and Mamba cheated to take the wind out of the sails of Dulce Kanela who fought valiantly alongside Pimpinela. In the end, the team of Mr. Iguana and Nino Hamburguesa outwitted the partnership of Australian Suicide and Vanilla, allowing Iguana to hit the Iguanarana on Vanilla for the victory.

The women’s division of AAA hit the ring for an eight-person tag with some potential title implications for the future. The rudas team worked well together but Keyra demanded all eyes on her as she nearly beheaded Star Fire with a knee strike in the corner. Big Mami and Lady Maravilla continued their issues, with Mami laughing at Maravilla’s haircut following their cabellera vs. cabellera match last year. Hamada almost had the match won but Keyra tagged herself in and planted Faby with the Angel’s Wings to get the pinfall. After the match, Keyra laid out the challenge to AAA Reina de Reinas Champion Taya Valkyrie - the former champion wants a shot to reclaim her belt.

Just a few weeks removed from their critically-acclaimed match of the year contender independent Lucha de Apuestas match, Villano III Jr. and Aereo found themselves against each other on the main stage, only this time paired with the sizzling independent rivalry of Arez and Aramis. This match was nuts from the word go, all four men taking death-defying bumps and flying around the ring and the ringside area with reckless abandon. The unmasked Aereo impressed in his AAA return with a springboard 450 to all three luchadors outside. As the match returned to the ring, Arez and Aramis reversed everything of the other but an Arez’ punt to the nards allowed him enough time to hit a Half Nelson Driver for the win.

With The Elite unable to make the show due to COVID-19 and Cinta de Oro no-showing the event, Los Jinetes del Aire opted to defend the AAA Trios Championships against three other teams. The last minute change, however, proved to be too much as their game plan was shattered and the rudos took turns controlling the match. Hijo del Vikingo, Myzteziz Jr., and Octagon Jr. did fight back and took to the air, but the well-oiled machine known as Poder del Norte used a few chairs to neutralize their opponents. As Los OGTs and Los Mercenarios got into a fistfight outside the ring - some problems brewing there - Poder del Norte focused on grinding down Octagon Jr. enough to get the win and become the new AAA Trios Champions.

With his brother Rey Fenix stuck in the United States, Pentagon Jr. found allies in Laredo Kid and Pagano for a fight against the Los Ingobernables trio of Dragon Lee (returning to the name), LA Park, and Rush Toro Blanco. This was a brawl right off the bat, with LA Park and Rush trying their best to injure Pentagon Jr. as revenge for not getting their tag team title shot tonight. Dragon Lee and Laredo Kid fought tooth and nail with some amazing high-flying lucha but it was a little overshadowed by Pagano and Pentagon having a hardcore weapons-filled brawl with Rush and Park. Things broke down when Park and Rush put Pagano through a table with a powerbomb off the ring apron, leaving Los Ingobernables with a 3-2 advantage. Laredo Kid was taken out with a La Lanza from Lee. All alone, Pentagon Jr. fought back and threw Park and Lee out of the ring - leaving only him versus Rush for a little sprint until Konnan came down to the ring and smashed a guitar over Pentagon’s head. Rush soon thereafter connected with the Rush Driver to pin the AAA Tag Team champion in the middle of the ring.

The main event of the evening consisted of a new format for the Rey de Reyes tournament - a twelve-man Royal Rumble-esque battle royal, with elimination coming from being thrown over the top rope and to the floor. No reason for the change was explained. Drago and Puma King were the first two in the ring and had a fun little showdown until Blue Demon Jr. came out with his hammer and struck Drago over the head and dumped him to the floor. Dr. Wagner Jr. was fourth and he formed an alliance with his former rival as they double teamed Puma King until Psycho Clown came down for the save. Psycho had the arena roaring as he took on all comers: Daga, Karis La Momia Jr. and Monsther Clown. As Daga was dumped out of the ring, La Bestia del Ring entered the match and clotheslined Karis out of the match. Taurus came out and cleaned house as he threw Demon Jr., Wagner Jr., and Monsther Clown out of the match. Murder Clown was next and he and Taurus has a big boy brawl, neither one stepping down. Murder Clown and Psycho Clown tried to take Taurus out but the horned luchador fought back until Aerostar was the final entrant to arrive - only he did so by jumping off the lighting rig onto all the remaining luchadors. Taurus bounced back and threw Aerostar out right away and dumping Murder Clown right after, leaving the final three as Taurus, Psycho Clown, and Puma King. The crowd was going nuts as Taurus powerbombed Puma King into the mat and dropped Psycho Clown with the Inferno Suplex! “The Ace of AAA” fought back, however, and he scaled the top rope alongside Taurus and looked for a superplex, but Taurus reversed and hit a huge hurricanrana from the top rope! Puma King capitalized on the damage and threw Psycho Clown out of the ring, leaving only him and Taurus to duke it out in the ring. Following some back-and-forth, Taurus connected with the Inferno Suplex and eliminated Puma King to win the giant sword and become the Rey de Reyes for the first time in his career.

COVID-19 shuts down Lucha Libre; empty arena shows in question

The lucha libre world is shut down, just like almost everything else. There have been different lengths to the hiatus in different places – there are some notes about what different areas are doing below. My impression is CMLL & AAA are expecting to be dark for a month. No one knows for sure but maybe pace out your consumption of other stuff with that target in mind.

Mexico State says all lucha libre (and boxing) is suspended in the state through April 20th.

Torreon shut down all events last night; the lucha libre commission says he was told to do so by the city. That canceled both two shows which were still planning on running last night. They’re hoping to be back in just 15 days (which is two weeks in Mexico terms.)

Okumura, CMLL's official lucha libre representative of Japan, says that Mexico will be ok if they take coronavirus as seriously as people in Japan. It does feel like Mexico is suspended public activities a little quicker than the US but it’s impossible to know how far that virus has spread.

Companies, varying in size from the local independents to AAA and CMLL, must be looking to run some empty arena shows as either fundraisers for COVID-19 relief or a need to fill television engagements. CMLL is continuing to run their Informa talk show program on their social media platforms, but that doesn't mean anything for in-ring action. AAA has been relatively silent about whatever plans they are thinking of, but expect an announcement soon if they plan on doing anything.
