BBW: Anything to Survive! [CVerse97]

Slumming it out with the girls in Sendai, I was hit with an epiphany about how to make my big return once I'd be cleared from injury. I was the damn ace of this company, so I might as well start acting like a rockstar. I got rid of the bandana, dyed my goatee silver-ish and grabbed a kickass black leather jacket to put together a new look for myself. While at it, some "friends" introduced me to one badass lady by the name of Chopper Nishida, who apparently had been involved in the business not long ago. They were looking to help her with employment and while she couldn't wrestle anymore, she was one big, mean lady so I decided to bring her in as my enforcer (and implied love interest? Hm, a note for the future...) If nothing else, I figured having someone like her beat down some people on the roster would be an interesting visual.

Not Quite Dead Yet

Friday, Week 4 November 1997 at the Iwata Hall, Tohoku

Damn that Isao Takemura… He almost no-showed again, but at least he did arrive before the start of the show itself this time. I wanted to fine him for getting on my nerves, but I realized people have gotten away with much worse than being late, so that’d come across as me overreacting. Instead, I vented my frustration by yelling at him and we proceeded on with the show.

yo4hXpn.jpg

With my reinvented self still a few months away from actually making an appearance, I decided to open the show by airing a video package about the new me. Gotta keep reminding those fans about me while I’m away, I’m the damn ace of this company!

Nobuhito Ogiwara vs SHIRO

This is just one of these matches that have to happen because of the tournament. No one cares much about SHIRO and fans still crapped on Ogiwara, but the chaotic mess that was this bout helped hide the big stoner’s shortcomings a little bit. Plus he’s still getting a reaction, as opposed to SHIRO’s none. If fans want to boo him, I guess that makes him a heel and a pretty over one at that, so he got the win and gods help me with this big oaf in the future.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, Nobuhito Ogiwara defeated SHIRO in 10:04 by pinfall with a Roaring Elbow.

Nukenin vs SPIDER Inao

I mean, Inao was brought in on a trial run and Nukenin’s our breakout star, there was never a question over who’s winning this but they did have a pretty interesting contest. This was also where my plans went out the window. See, I had originally thought of the tournament as a way to introduce the King of Pain title, which would be a midcard title for young high flyers like these two to compete over. Nukenin, of course, would be the standard bearer of that division, but he’d already gotten way more over than I thought and worse, his contract was coming up soon. I tried to chat him up about an extension and he promptly told me to go f**k myself. I’m not sure if he’s still bitter about me shouting at him after he broke my jaw or if he thinks he’s outgrown this promotion, the bottom line is he won’t be sticking around. Now I have to handle his departure while I also reconfigure the damn tournament brackets. So much for my dreams of a holiday after the injury. What does a man have to do around here to get a break?

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Nukenin defeated SPIDER Inao in 13:52 by pinfall with a surprise roll up.

Alright enough of the tournament for now, the semifinal brackets are known and here’s a video to hype up next show’s clash, the master of the guillotine Mamoru Nagahama versus the American psychopath Doug Peak!

Double Trouble vs Genghis Rahn & Madman Boone

Every chance I get to book Double Trouble, I do it because these two seem to have a great chemistry between them which I want to compliment with enough teamwork experience. It’s probably the only way Bennett can ever work in BBW, being as technically-oriented as he is he’d never work as a singles star. Rahn and Boone were a no-brainer, they’ve had some experience working as a team overseas and it gave them a bit of the spotlight, with Rahn carrying his young teammate through the match before scoring the pin.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Madman Boone & Genghis Rahn defeated Double Trouble in 10:38 when Genghis Rahn defeated Henry Bennett by pinfall with a Rahn To The Hills.

z0QOMbn.jpg

Munenori Umari took center stage next, filling in for our ring announcer as he hyped up the night’s main event where his new clients, the McWade brothers, would be teaming up with Psycho to take on Tamura and the Dynasty Warriors title holders. Fans still seemed to be warming up to the gaijin trio, but having someone with the mic skills of Umari to hype them up certainly helped.

Natsuhisa Tamura and Matsubara & Onodera vs Psycho and The McWade Brothers (with Munenori Umari)

Talking the foreigners up is one thing to get them over, seeing them in action against established stars is another. Well, defeating said stars too, but they’re not ready for that just yet. For now, the McWades were the big bruiser duo and Psycho really amped up the craziness alongside Tamura, who debuted a new finisher called the Car Crash Dive to get the pin. Way to wrap up the show and might I add, what a fitting name for a move, considering the usual psychology around Tamura’s matches.

In a decent match, Natsuhisa Tamura and Matsubara & Onodera defeated Psycho and The McWade Brothers in 14:26 when Natsuhisa Tamura defeated Psycho by pinfall with a Car Crash Dive.

People will tell you many things about me, but one thing they cannot say is that I am unfair. Last show, I threatened Madman Boone to give him a wake up call. This show, he seemed to be faring better so I did give him the pleasure of a public recognition, saying he’s on the right path. Most of my praises I saved for Tamura of course, who was awesome for another night, though I did make sure to save a breath for Umari too. The man’s been doing a great job of being the glue that holds our touring gaijin together as a manager and unlike Mr. Miwa, he’s around all the time.

Christmas Carnage

Sunday, Week 4 November 1997 at the Iwata Hall, Tohoku

39CYfNx.jpgYKbvIkt.jpgrmysBZU.jpgLQsTUfN.jpg

My unmistakable locker room leader instinct told me something was wrong and the atmosphere was heavy, so I decided to call a meeting before the show started and let people vent their frustrations. Not that I really paid attention, but I guess it's better to have them bitch in public than to each other. Makes you question if whatever it is you're bitching about is really worth standing up for and making public, you know? Anyway, Matsubara still complained about his gimmick. Tough luck, you're still around, you're still one half of the tag champs and your partner's over that crap so follow his lead.Hanari, pft, yeah, whatever, clown. Nukenin can go drown in a well for all I care anymore, I wanted to hand that kid the world and he spit in my face by refusing to resign. As for Henry Lee... I don't know kid, it's not like I needed someone to fill in Lamprecht's shoes after he left. Pull yourself together and get off the pills.

Matsudaira Morioka, Kaneie Ichihara, Koichi Kajiwara and Kazuma Narato vs I, Butcher, Henry Bennett, Eddie Peak and Acid

Pretty basic opener to get the crowd going, four crazy and/or violent and/or risk taking gaijin versus four BBW young lions who lacked the character of the foreigners but brought the trademark Japanese toughness and fighting spirit. Unsurprisingly, the action was terrible but it's not like anyone expected much out of this setup and Ichihara ended the match on a high note for the fans when he tapped out Acid.

In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, Matsudaira Morioka, Kaneie Ichihara, Koichi Kajiwara and Kazuma Narato defeated I, Butcher, Henry Bennett, Eddie Peak and Acid in 9:40 when Kaneie Ichihara defeated Acid by submission with a Flying Tiger Arm Bar.

Genghis Rahn & Madman Boone vs SHIRO & SPIDER Inao

I won't lie, I was hoping for some tag team magic here so I could replace the Nuclear Assassins as our resident junior daredevil team. I didn't get it, but SHIRO and Inao really brought the stunt show, which was equally jaw dropping as the insane hardcore spots Rahn and Boone brought to the table. I mean that literally, they did break a table during the match. There was a lot of fast paced shock and awe from bell to bell, building on the opener to get fans buzzing for the upcoming tournament matches as well as the big main event, with Boone getting the pin over Inao for the finish. Gotta keep the big psychos scary and the small high flyers squishy.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Madman Boone & Genghis Rahn defeated SHIRO and SPIDER Inao in 9:56 when Madman Boone defeated SPIDER Inao by pinfall with a Boone And Bust.

Doug Peak vs Mamoru Nagahama

Now these two were primarily tag team wrestlers, but here they were so far in the tournament and one had to go all the way to the finals. I'd normally push Doug since he fit BBW's style better, but he'd been nothing but trouble backstage, plus I'd come to realize that fans were more into his brother, Eddie. Nagahama was the exact opposite side of that coin: he'd never caused an issue and he was clearly getting more over than his partner, a duo that was already starting to be hailed by some as the next, improved Matsubara & Onodera. Not where I wanted things to move towards, but Nagahama winning was best for business; also the safer bet since the kid was loyal anyway. So once again, Doug Peak was added to the growing list of victims that tapped out to the Nagahama Guillotine.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Mamoru Nagahama defeated Doug Peak in 9:59 by submission with a Nagahama Guillotine.

Nobuhito Ogiwara vs Nukenin

This one played out like every Ogiwara match ever does, with him using everything he can get his hands on to hide the fact he's not that good when it comes to using said hands for anything wrestling-related, while fans make sure to tell him so on top of their lungs. It's unusual for Japanese fans to be so openly disrespectful, but then again the BBW crowds are more similar to a western audience than traditional puroresu fans. Needless to say, for all of Nukenin's issues, there was no way I was getting Ogiwara over him. It took a while, but eventually the masked one hit the Fisherman's Buster for the pin and punched his way to the finals.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Nukenin defeated Nobuhito Ogiwara in 9:49 by pinfall with a Fisherman's Buster.

With the final pairing now locked in, we wrapped up the tournament-related part of the night by showing a graphic to hype up the big showdownn Nukenin vs. Mamoru Nagahama. While only given a brief mention, I should point out that Peak and Ogiwara would also be having a match, with the winner earning the right to be the first one to challenge the tournament's winner for the King of Pain title.

Natsuhisa Tamura, Matsubara & Onodera and Taka Hoshizawa vs Henry Lee, Psycho & The McWade Brothers (with Munenori Umari)

4 vs 4 Streetfight in the main event, another chapter in the ongoing feud between company men and gaijin invaders, while also teasing Lee and Tamura's race for my title and the tag title feud between the champions and the McWades. Surprise surprise, Lee was wasted on painkillers again and everyone else had to pick up his slack, which seemed to piss off every wrestler involved in that main event besides Psycho. Maybe he was new to it all, maybe he was too crazy to care, who knows what the MoSC looked like anyway. The finish was Lee pinning Hoshizawa to look strong for his one on one clash with Tamura, but seeing him in action (and, I must admit, how much the fans have come to care about Hoshi-san) I ended up regretting my decision.

In a decent match, Henry Lee, Psycho and The McWade Brothers defeated Natsuhisa Tamura, Taka Hoshizawa and Matsubara & Onodera in 13:31 when Henry Lee defeated Taka Hoshizawa by pinfall with an Asylum Buster.

Once again, I told Tamura how awesome he is, mostly to calm him down so he wouldn't take matters into his own hands and kick Lee out the door. I completely overlooked the fact that despite owning BBW, he'd recently moved to British Columbia to pursue his DNCW career. Not like we lacked Canadian workers here, but whatever. I also gave Rahn a good work for calling his match and being the ring general the other rookies needed, before turning to Ichihara. Dumb kid had thrown a chop so sloppy in that opener, he ended up actually fracturing Eddie Peak's throat. I told him such stuff would not be tolerated and how the BBW style was already dangerous enough, but I doubt it really got into his skull.

LQsTUfN.jpg

Lee was a curious case. He'd wrestled high one too many times but he was our main gaijin heel heading to a big main event match against Tamura for our top prize, so as much as I wanted to fire him on the spot myself, I resisted the urge. Instead, I told him I'd be withholding his full pay for the night. He was going to lose that match and moved down the ladder, no longer our top heel. I made it perfectly clear the only reason he was staying was because I'd advertised that last match and he'd better show up clean for it to knock it out the park. What happened next blew my mind.

Slowly, Henry looked up, tears streaming down his bloodied face, and thrust himself at me. It caught me off guard but there was no punch, no tackle. A sobbing Henry Lee wept openly in my arms.

With words no one else could hear he whispered to me.

“I’ll be good. I’ll be good. I’ll be… loyal.”

Author's Note:Shout-out to BigelowCartwheel, I totally ripped off that finale from one of his many fine moments in his diary, The Oddworld. If you're not already following, do yourself a favour and go check it out.

New Year’s Cleave

Sunday, Week 4 December 1997 at the Iwata Hall, Tohoku

t8lAELw.jpgwhqv1ls.jpg

I should start taking bets over who's gonna be using what every show... At least I'll be making some money for having to deal with this stuff. This time it was Ichihara enjoying his herbs before the show and he got a fine for it, which I doubt made him stop to reconsider his habits, but what can you do. My real problem was Eisaku Shigeki releasing a stink bomb in the locker room, which had the boys taking turns to use a nearby storage locker in order to change into their gear. I don't know what's wrong with the man, he seemed genuinely puzzled that nobody "got" his rib and even more puzzled at having to pay a fine that'd go as a bonus to the building's cleaning crew for having to deal with his crap.

39CYfNx.jpgCApKygs.jpghem3Gdz.jpgYKbvIkt.jpgrmysBZU.jpg

If nothing else, Shigeki's dumb idea gave an extra tone of irony to my call for another "clear the air" session. Surprise surprise, the tag champs and Hoshizawa were still pissed at wrestling a pilled-out Henry Lee last show, Hanari still hadn't gotten over the clown rib I pulled on him (I mean, it was far better than Shigeki's, you ungrateful douche) and Nukenin... Eh, I've been over the kid's issues, my injury, how he was on his way out and messed up my tournament plans. Why do I keep doing this?

Taka Hoshizawa, Matsudaira Morioka, Kaneie Ichihara and Koichi Kajiwara vs Psycho, Genghis Rahn, Madman Boone and I, Butcher

Essentially a repeat of last show's opener, an eight man brawl with plenty of weapons and chaos to take away from all the incompetence involved, although I have to admit Rahn and Hoshizawa could have done without the distraction as well. It blew my mind how Taka Hoshizawa has improved and gotten over with the fans, I thought I might have to reconsider his push for 1998. Oh, Ichihara also took the pin here on top of his pre-show fine, just to get my message across.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Psycho, I, Butcher and Madman Boone & Genghis Rahn defeated Taka Hoshizawa, Matsudaira Morioka, Kaneie Ichihara and Koichi Kajiwara in 10:28 when Psycho defeated Kaneie Ichihara by pinfall with a Psychotic Break.

King of Pain tournament Bronze match

JY8wG3m.jpg25UZG0h.pngtOfOq8h.jpg

Doug Peak vs Nobuhito Ogiwara

Not as chaotic as the opener, but still overbooked as hell to hide Ogiwara's incompetence and play up Peak's hardcore insanity. I hated to put Ogiwara over here, because on top of it all he gassed out and got crapped on, but he was the permanent roster member here, plus I wanted to use the Peak Brothers as a tag team again going forward. So I had him cheat to win in order to downplay his victory and protect Doug for his comeback in the next tour.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, Nobuhito Ogiwara defeated Doug Peak in 10:33 by pinfall, illegally using the ropes for leverage.

Mamoru Nagahama vs Nukenin

So once again, I'd booked myself into a corner. Nukenin was scheduled to win this whole thing originally, but this ended up being his final match in BBW. Nagahama was a solid worker, but not yet polished enough to be put over Nukenin, plus I mainly wanted him to work as one half of Naga-Mori for a while still. Eventually, I went with Nukenin, with plans of vacating the title later. In all my bad luck, I'd included a Bronze match in the tournament, so maybe I'd do Nagahama vs Ogiwara for the vacant title next. Anyway, I just told the boys to go flat out and do their best, which they did, before Nukenin hit the big Shooting Star Press to get the pin. Stupid kid. Could have had it all if he'd been smart.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Nukenin defeated Mamoru Nagahama in 11:26 by pinfall with a Shooting Star Press. Nukenin wins the BBW King of Pain title.

Matsubara & Onodera vs The McWade Brothers (with Munenori Umari)

I'd been building up to this match since I first brought the McWades on board and they did not disappoint. Under the watchful eye of Umari at ringside, they really gave the champions a beating and, truth be told, were the better team in terms of pure wrestling, as crazy as that might sound. Sadly, they weren't anywhere near as experienced or over as the title holders, so they ended up losing in the end, but at least I made it a roll up victory to save the heels a bit of face (hah, see what I did there?!)

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Matsubara & Onodera defeated The McWade Brothers in 14:02 when Asato Matsubara defeated Dean McWade by pinfall with a roll up. Matsubara & Onodera make defence number 4 of their BBW Dynasty Warriors titles.

Ladder match for the BBW Dynasty Warrior title

1Y07Rni.jpg25UZG0h.pngLQsTUfN.jpg

Natsuhisa Tamura vs Henry Lee

Well, sooner or later this had to happened since I'd been sidelined, right? BBW founder Tamura versus our top gaijin heel in a hardcore race for the belt, hanging above the ring. This was every bit the car crash one would expect with these two and such a stipulation at play, with the ladder used mostly as a weapon and neither man really going for the belt until the finishing sequence, though neither seemed to have the stamina to keep up that pace for fourteen minutes. I mean, it shouldn't surprise me given Tamura's age and I bet that spot where he got suplexed onto a ladder so hard it bent the damn thing in half didn't help his case. Lee lost, of course, but apparently he wasn't kidding last time when he said he'd straighten up; not only did he somehow manage to work this match with a clear head, he also agreed to get dropped off the ladder and through a table on the outside for the finish, leaving the ring free for Tamura to win the match.

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Natsuhisa Tamura defeated Henry Lee in 14:09 when Natsuhisa Tamura retrieved the BBW World Warrior title belt.

I swear as soon as I'd heard that song, I thought it'd make a great entrance theme, so of course I claimed it for my own!

yo4hXpn.jpg

Ryu Kajahara is back, you bastards! Fans got a taste of my new look and gimmick, while I got on the mic to proclaim that I'd rise from a wheelchair, hell, I'd rise from the grave if it meant I could prevent someone from stealing my title! A winded Natsuhisa Tamura was treated to a piledriver head first onto the title belt and I grabbed my title to wrap up the show standing tall. What a setup for the next tour, right? I'm a damn genius!

Of course, backstage I hugged ol' man Tamura for holding the fort while I was away and told the McWades they put on one hell of a performance. 1997 was in the books, I'd ended the year with a bang to really establish me as the ace of BBW and everyone could now f**k off to some New Year's Eve party while I'd be out to sell as many Kajahara t-shirts as I could while the fans were still hyped.

Guilty as charged. Onita's mega-ego is the main inspiration behind how I book and narrate Kajahara.

I'm not a C-Verse guy but this is just great fun.

Thank you. Much appreciated praise.

I'm about to post the January off-month narrative, was wonering if anyone's interested in a roster/champions update. With BBW being a touring promotion, it has a very small core of workers with people coming and going for every tour, but I figured I might as well ask.

January was an off month and I had enough time to get over the fact that Nukenin left. He wasn't, of course, picked up by any company, which hopefully humbled the guy a bit, but I was still sad to lose such a talented star. So now I had to make my plans for the year, including the 1998 Blood Bowl as well as the fate of the World Warrior and King of Pain titles.

z0QOMbn.jpgwhqv1ls.jpg

Munenori Umari also had enough time to get over the fact that he broke up with his girlfriend. Gosh, he must have had a sad start to the new year, but I was generous enough to make up for it by telling him he'd be moving to the broadcast team too, the idea being I'd be easing him into a spot where he would eventually replace that bastard Shikegi. Two birds with one stone.

v3byjPK.jpgLQsTUfN.jpg

The craziest news to come out though was I, Butcher and Henry Lee winning the DAVE Tag Team titles off Chris Caulfield and Big Cat Brandon. So apparently they'd buried the hatchet? Was this going to lead to a breakup? No idea, but it certainly messed with MY plans of having them carry that feud over to BBW.

Hadn't realized your native roster was that thin on actual players until now. Damn, but that's a situation to want to rectify. Guess you've been feeling a bit more relaxed because you have your top two natives on lockdown and can just cycle gaijin in to get beat by your big native tag team?

Nope, I just have a self-imposed limitation that PPA deals will only be offered to Japanese workers, while gaijin will be brought in for tours. Given the limited availability of hardcore workers in Japan at this point, I'm running a pretty limited roster, at least until some young lions outgrow that status.

I get that, but not even some brawler types who might be liberal enough to do a tables match or something?

Good luck trying to get anyone to take that belt seriously again. Anyway, Nagahama had made it to the finals and Ogiwara had won the Bronze match, so they fought each other over the strap. Once again, I was caught between a rock and a hard place. I liked Nagahama, he was skilled and over, but still needed him with Morioka. Ogiwara... well, he was Ogiwara; he gassed out and predictably enough, I overbooked the hell out of this match to hide their shortcomings. Somehow though, fans did not give him any flak this time and damn was I amazed! Anyway, I went for the middle ground, trying to give every man a takeaway from this match: Ogiwara ended up in the Nagahama Guillotine but refused to tap out, forcing a stoppage finish. Nagahama won the belt, but Ogiwara became the first man ever to not tap out to that dreaded finisher. Won't lie, Silas Odswald was a major inspiration for this Kajahara. I'm also loving how this was my first save ever with a dirty doctor backstage (mentioned at times in the narrative as "Dr. Beefcake") and no one ever gets bigger in size but everyone's going wild with the drinks, drugs and pills. Really adds that "sleazy shady hardcore indy" vibe but I also had to think about Kajahara allowing and encouraging said doctor. Can't be that hard and dismissive on your workers when you're employing a dealer in the locker room :p
