<p>Thanks. I began this diary inspired by the snarkiness of Silas Odswald in the Oddworld diary, but it never went public as I ran into a serious roadblock and began my Chi Town Urban Combat one instead. This is something to keep me busy between CTUC and my joint projects with Historian, it's written already from back in the day so all I have to to is the formatting now till I catch up. Hopefully it will motivate me enough to pick up the save again from where I left off.</p><p> </p><p>

P.S. I just lost a decent touring worker to a Kenny death. The Climb lost its champion and aspiring figurehead. Not the same. Although, spoiler, the roadblock I did mention has to do with BBW losing its aspiring masked junior ace in Nukenin. Fortunately, the Hayabusa similarities end there, Nukenin did not cripple himself. Yet</p>

They will sit in the front row and never bother if they get hit with shards of glass or if a heel spits water on them, they will actually applaud and feel thrilled they became part of the show. Some workers find it hard to wrap their heads around it, others are more than happy to take advantage of it. Enter Eddie Peak, who got into an argument with a fan outside the Iwata Hall and had to be contained before he could raise a hand on him. Not that I cared much since no one got hurt. Eddie had his fun and that could only enhance his persona as an unpredictable, violent gaijin heel. Elsewhere, his behaviour would have been met with dire consequences. In BBW, we considered it a good day if Lamprecht the Lunatic didn’t injure anyone while drunk out of his mind, so in comparison this was really nothing. I like to create a relaxed work environment.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="JY8wG3m.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/JY8wG3m.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="0XnW6vx.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/0XnW6vx.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="cyJne4q.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/cyJne4q.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> The Peak Brothers returned for our summer tour and Mr. Miwa was their handler now that Big Trouble was gone, so I gave them some time at the start of the show for him to hype them up. The opener was wild to put over the Peak Brothers as psychotic madmen but the chaos benefited their untalented opponents too, although no overbooking could ever hide how terrible that Hanari-san is. What troubled me mostly though was how Doug’s wild antics seemed to clash with Miwa’s clean-cut sports manager ways. Not a good sign going forward. Maybe I should limit Miwa’s role to mostly being Eddie’s go-to guy.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p></p><img alt="0l8tY8y.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/0l8tY8y.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong> </strong><img alt="r6x0uud.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/r6x0uud.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="25UZG0h.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/25UZG0h.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="rmysBZU.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/rmysBZU.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="25UZG0h.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/25UZG0h.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="pM7r1m5.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/pM7r1m5.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> Acid vs Nukenin vs SHIRO</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> Ah yes, the legendary Acid. Known as Tayler Morton back then, I gave the kid a chance to work under the mask he was so excited about and he happily accepted to take the pin here to put Nukenin over. With those three high flyers in this match, I thought I’d make this a spotfest to highlight their style but ultimately decided against it. They were all so green they’d probably blow it, plus the crowd were already buzzing after the wild opener. Given how much fans still hate Ogiwara, they loved seeing Wood tear him down, so I can safely say mission accomplished.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p></p><img alt="7nXiDsK.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/7nXiDsK.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong> Lamprecht the Lunatic’s farewell tour</strong></p><p><strong> </strong><img alt="iaJEGJI.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/iaJEGJI.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="25UZG0h.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/25UZG0h.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="1Y07Rni.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/1Y07Rni.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> Lamprecht the Lunatic vs Natshuhisa Tamura</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> Just under five minutes of action, but what action that was. Lamprecht took an insane bump down the Iwata Hall stairs and onto an electric transformer box that exploded in sparks for a great pop from the crowd. More on that later. My title wasn’t on the line, which meant fans realistically could buy Takai winning this if he did and we kept the match intentionally even to push that possibility even further. Of course, this being Takai’s final appearance for BBW, he ended up in the nailed box and even agreed to take a big bump prior to that to end his time with us as spectacularly as possible.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="rCrbMWQ.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/rCrbMWQ.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> <img alt="LQsTUfN.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/LQsTUfN.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="e8rzx2c.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/e8rzx2c.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> The real banger came after the match was over though, because Henry F’N Lee returned to BBW and beat me down to a pulp while the fans were whipped into a frenzy! The same man I’d sent off in an Iron Maiden match now came back with a vengeance, reigniting our feud and providing me with what would be my first challenger for the BBW World Warrior title. Slick booking, Ryu, real slick…</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="IqChfad.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/IqChfad.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><span style="font-size:14px;">Show Rating:</span></span></strong></p><p> <img alt="rCrbMWQ.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/rCrbMWQ.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="47280" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="LQsTUfN.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/LQsTUfN.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="Q9cEzdh.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/Q9cEzdh.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="1Y07Rni.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/1Y07Rni.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> By the time I was carried backstage, Henry Lee was already there and I gave him the thumbs up for nailing that final segment. Bloody Takai had also been (cautiously) released from the Iron Maiden and I made sure to (carefully) hug him while wishing him the best in his future endeavors. I wanted to thank the vets for the semi main event and giving us a hot lead-in too, but wasn’t sure how sober Lamprecht was, so I played it safe and just pointed out Tamura as a great example for the boys, saying they should aspire to reach his age and still do the matches he does.</p></div></blockquote>

Of course, the Peak Brothers lost this one but they never complained, even when I told them they’d be taking a stereo table bump. They knew this was their chance to work with two of BBW’s top guys and just being in the ring with them would elevate them in the eyes of the fans. Still, I didn’t want to kill their momentum just as they were taking off, so at least we finished the match with a roll up to save them some credibility.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p></p><img alt="87E3trK.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/87E3trK.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong> </strong><img alt="r6x0uud.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/r6x0uud.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="25UZG0h.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/25UZG0h.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="pM7r1m5.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/pM7r1m5.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p><strong> Acid vs SHIRO</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> And now, for something completely different. Again, this match was different from the brawl that preceded it and it played out a lot like a classic puroresu contest. Not exactly what fans came to see, but I played to those guys’ strengths plus I wanted to prove naysayers wrong. All the people that called us a “garbage promotion” now had something that would shut them up, a proper match with great wrestling to mark Matsubara & Onodera’s second title defense.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="M4SOg7D.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/M4SOg7D.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> <img alt="z0QOMbn.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/z0QOMbn.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="BTSd9eF.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/BTSd9eF.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> Lamprecht’s match had the main event spot and if this was some oldschool U.S. promotion, I’d add “presented by Munenori Umari” on the marquee. Probably shouldn’t have had him swing a barb wire bat between Wood’s legs though, that was hard to watch and legitimately hurt the big man. At least Lamprecht agreed to take a suicidal dive off the Iwata Hall balcony and for that I gave him the win over Larry, even if originally I had booked it the other way round. Gotta give the old man some credibility to make the rest of his matches worth paying to watch.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="ozLd3Bm.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/ozLd3Bm.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><span style="font-size:14px;">Show Rating:</span></span></strong></p><p> <img alt="ozLd3Bm.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/ozLd3Bm.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="47280" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="BTSd9eF.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/BTSd9eF.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="cyJne4q.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/cyJne4q.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="z0QOMbn.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/z0QOMbn.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> Despite his appearance and character, Larry Wood is actually a very intelligent man and that translates into his understanding of the business too. I also praised our managers Miwa and Umari for their great job on the mic and by the ring, saying they were both a big part of why their clients were getting over with the fans. We had almost sold out the Iwata Hall that night, I had no backstage crap to deal with before the show and everything had worked out like clockwork. Things were looking bright.</p></div></blockquote>

Lamprecht showed up wasted again, but this time he was high on painkillers instead of booze. Not an unusual thing if you’ve spent your life doing crazy stuff as a hardcore maniac, not really something that bothered me anymore since Lamprecht was on his way out, but I had to set an example for the rest of the locker room. For a second, I thought of firing him on the spot, but decided against it. Not because it would look overly harsh, but because I didn’t want him to go out with his last match being a win over Larry Wood, so I gave him another fine and sent him home. Lamprecht was overjoyed and even kissed my hand, promising he’d show up sober next time for his final send-off, but I was surprised to see Larry pat me on the shoulder and say I did the right thing. It was wild, it was chaotic and it was able to cover up the shortcomings of both young lions. If only Butcher hadn’t botched his own finisher too. It was fast, it was brutal and it really felt like Matsubara an Onodera were out of their comfort zone. Incidentally, they were the only ones who didn’t take some sort of impressive bump. Tamura got DDT’d onto the ring steps. Rahn was dropped onto a ball of barb wire. Bennett had a glass bottle smashed onto his head. Wood was knocked off the ring apron and through the announcers’ table, a bad landing messing up his costovertebral joints; I would later be told that these are the articulations that connect the heads of the ribs with the bodies of the thoracic vertebrae. It was crazy and by the time Tamura hit the Super Murder Bomb on Bennett for the pin, fans were on their feet cheering all six men for their effort. Maybe Matsubara and Onodera less, due to their lack thereof.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="87E3trK.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/87E3trK.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><span style="font-size:14px;">Show Rating:</span></span></strong></p><p> <img alt="ozLd3Bm.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/ozLd3Bm.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="47280" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="1Y07Rni.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/1Y07Rni.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="BTSd9eF.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/BTSd9eF.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="z0QOMbn.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/z0QOMbn.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> Again, I put Tamura over backstage as a great example for what he did given his age and lingering damage. I also praised an aching Larry Wood like my life depended upon it, because he’d not only survived another injury, he’d also put up another great performance both in the ring and backstage since he’d put together all of the night’s matches as my new go-to road agent. Larry barely gave me a thumbs up as he was being stretchered away and I gave my last bit of praise to Munenori Umari for his night’s work.</p></div></blockquote>

Violence and Bloodshed

Sunday, Week 4 July 1997 at the Iwata Hall, Tohoku

Having a wrestler show up late is always a stressful thing. When your only referee does it, it’s frustrating as hell. But a broadcaster? That was… unexpected. Eisaku Shigeki was the culprit, but there really wasn’t much I could say since we don’t have a broadcast deal that would require the announce team to be there no matter what. I scolded him just so he wouldn’t get away with it, which apparently he interpreted as permission to be an asshole in general. Sometimes I’m too kind.

tOfOq8h.jpg

I wasn’t so kind with Ogiwara though, who was once again indulging in his favourite habit. Since hearing me scream in his face twice didn’t cut it, I cut his paycheck instead this time. Ogiwara seemed to realize this is starting to affect not only his performance, but his income too and promised he’ll do better in the future. Unless he was just worried that a lower paycheck meant less weed money, but I’ll take it regardless.

Ls2dk3O.jpgcyJne4q.jpg

With Larry Wood out injured, I made a call to Big Trouble and asked him to fill in for the show in what would be Lamprecht’s final farewell match. Always the trooper, Trouble made the flight (and a few prank calls once he’d landed) and the show opened with him making his return next to Mr. Miwa, who hyped up the fact that Big Trouble had returned for one night only just to kick Lamprecht out into retirement. Subtle.

Naga-Mori vs Nukenin & Acid

What happens when two high flyers meet two hard hitters? An exciting opening match full of flashy moves to get the crowd going before the tough guys prevail over the frail aerialists, that’s what happens. Morioka’s Backdrop Suplex on Acid was a thing of beauty, I should give him the pin more often instead of trying to put Nagahama’s Guillotine over all the time.

Taka Hoshizawa vs Henry Bennett

There’s no way around it, Taka needed a victory. He was nothing special, sure, but he’d been working hard on his craft, he was willing to take bumps and frankly, I had a host of young lions to take the pins before he had to. Henry Bennett was one such young lion, who was a little more into technical wrestling than I’d want him to. Next to Biff they were a decent duo of brawlers, but with Biff out doing dates in Canada, Bennett did the favours for Taka here and on with the show we went.

With this being the final show of the summer tour, Lamprecht’s farewell match wasn’t the only big finale on the card. The Peak Brothers had been making an impression so they were booked to challenge for the BBW Dynasty Warriors titles on the show. What better chance to get them over than have Umari talk them up before the match. Slowly but surely, they were taking up the spot the Wood Brothers used to.

Matsubara & Onodera vs The Peak Brothers (with Munenori Umari)

Seeing these two teams in the ring, you could tell the Peak Brothers were champions in the making. I mean, they were much more fitting to the BBW environment than two classic puroresu workers, but fans weren’t ready to buy the Peaks winning just yet. They had a big opportunity, they wrestled their butts off and gave the champions another title defense to be proud of before Eddie fell to Matsubara’s Brainbuster. You know what they say, the chase is better than the catch and all that. Someday though…

M4SOg7D.jpg

1Y07Rni.jpg25UZG0h.pngk8tfSV4.jpg

Natsuhisa Tamura vs Genghis Rahn

Now that’s more like it, classic blood and guts style fighting is what fans came to see and this is exactly what they got in this match. Rahn went all out, Tamura brought the insanity and fans finally came alive to cheer for their icon to take down the foreigner. Which he did, well past the ten minute mark. If you ask me, it was a pretty safe approach, no one even took an impressive bump to pop the crowd, but apparently that wasn’t necessary. One Murder Bomb was all it took and Tamura had the fans counting one two three. That’s charisma.

Lamprecht the Lunatic's farewell tour

iaJEGJI.jpg25UZG0h.pngLs2dk3O.jpgwcyJne4q.jpg

Lamprecht the Lunatic vs Big Trouble (with Mr. Miwa)

Five minutes, barely. Still got the job done, since we’d packed the match with insane stunts. Come to think of it, that was why I kept the Tamura-Rahn match so basic, so it wouldn’t lessen the impact of this one. By the time you could tell whether Lamprecht was drunk again or not, he’d taken his suicidal dive onto a rigged table that exploded upon impact, he’d made his inhuman comeback and after a distraction from Mr. Miwa, he was down and staring at the lights. If he was going out putting someone else over, a non-permanent member of the roster even, I figured I could at least make it go down with a bit of decency. Something Lamprecht apparently had lost between the pills and booze a long time ago.

e8rzx2c.jpg

I was out next and running my mouth about the night’s main event, where I’d be putting my BBW World Warrior title on the line against Henry Lee. If the Iron Maiden match hadn’t proved enough to put him down, tonight’s match would because it would be contested… within a cage! With barb wire on top! That was probably when I realized we should have had the cage set up before the show and somehow lower it, because fans sure were surprised alright, but I had to keep talking while the cage was being set up. It was awkward and I did my best, but there’s only so much you can say for so long when the fans want to see action. Not my best promo, not by a long shot.

Barb Wire Cage match for the BBW World Warrior title

e8rzx2c.jpg25UZG0h.pngLQsTUfN.jpg

Ryu Kajahara vs Henry Lee

So the stipulation wasn’t as exciting as it may have sounded, since the barb wire was only on top of the cage, but that didn’t stop me and Henry from having a bloodbath of a match. We tore into each other, we got our weapons from under the ring and pretty soon I climbed up to pull away some of the barb wire with my bare hands just so I could incorporate it into the match and hurt him plenty. That’s when the fight really took off, with both of us bleeding courtesy of the wire. To make matters even more exciting, we were paid a ringside visit by Henry’s long time nemesis, XFW’s I, Butcher. Henry hit full crazy mode and bounced off the ropes to charge the cage wall itself. We had rigged it so that it would collapse on top of Butcher once Henry would hit it, but given how hastily the cage had been set up before the match, it was also pretty believable that some screws hadn’t been tight enough and so the wall collapsed. Don’t think it topped his fall from the scaffold, but it was a big spot nevertheless and I was quick to capitalize by grabbing more barb wire, now readily available from the collapsed wall, to amp up my Kajahara Claw and get Henry to yield. That was only my first defense of the title, by the way.

I don’t remember much of the post-show stuff, because I was being taped up by Dr. Beefcake and most likely I’d lost a ton of blood too already. I’m pretty sure I told the Peak Brothers they’d be coming back and maybe one day winning the titles. Maybe I said bye to Lamprecht? I’m not sure. Or maybe I thanked Big Trouble for showing up to replace Larry Wood. I was feeling light headed. What a night.

In the off season, some people set up a low budget version of the DeColts’ CGC and called it Due North Canadian Wrestling. Not that I cared much, but then Tamura told me he’d signed to work for them and I just couldn’t understand why a sports entertainment promotion would ever invest in an old psychopath like Tamura. No, I was not jealous, even when they teamed him up with XFW’s Duncan Kendall and gave them the tag titles on their first show. I was a singles champion in my own country already. The only two time BBW World Warrior champion, mind you.

iaJEGJI.jpgZCOwYsZ.jpgBTSd9eF.jpg

Making calls for the winter tour was a bummer. Lamprecht probably hit the bottle hard after his final match and his gut had gone into "morbidly obese" territory. If he was into steroids as well, someone needed to tell him they require a lot of gym time too, not just upping the caloric intake. Whatever, he was gone and thus not my concern. What was my concern was that Hinote Dojo reached out to Madman Boone, while Pride Glory Honor Wrestling snatched Larry Wood for a tour. That last one really stung. Still, we had a tour to do and I wasn’t giving up. If nothing else, that only pushed me to up the ante, with new faces, a new stipulation for the main event and big tournament for the brand new BBW King of Pain title!

Hammer Smashed Head

Friday, Week 2 October 1997 at the Iwata Hall, Tohoku

It’s amazing what a difference a single person makes. I stepped into the Iwata Hall locker room, which by the way we had finally sold out for the first time, feeling a change in the air. It wasn’t just the absence of Lamprecht, it was all the memories of him being a sad shell of a man that were gone too. I had thought of investing the money I saved from not having to pay him into hiring a veteran road agent that would also lead the locker room, but decided against it. I would be the leader as well as the road agent. And company ace. So I spent some of his money into bringing in some cheerful characters instead. Many of them being young lions and with some of my regular rookies getting over like it was no one’s business, I’d decided to introduce a new tournament for them since they had no title to chase. Guess that was what tipped the scales and finally made us sell out the Iwata Hall.

King of Pain tournament match

Acid vs Matsudara Morioka

A textbook match to kick off the young lion tournament and the show itself, Acid got the crowd going with his show stealing flips before Morioka got a hold of him for some ground and pound. Acid hit his hope spots, looked like he was about to make a comeback and ultimately fell to Morioka’s Backdrop Suplex. Nice, simple and effective.

Biff the Bruiser vs Doug Peak

Mr. Miwa was off working a 5SSW show again, but I guess that was better because Doug and Eddie would be competing in the tournament as individuals, not a team under his guidance as was the whole idea. This was a no-frills brawl from start to finish, with Doug bringing some hardcore action too and eventually getting the win as well with his House of Horrors finisher that apparently was really over with the fans. Duly noted.

Henry Bennett vs Nobuhito Ogiwara

Yeah, these two are kinda terrible in or around a ring, Ogiwara especially, which is something the fans made sure he heard for the entirety of the match. My solution, book this to be an absolute mess so the audience never gets a chance to realize they’re actually watching some crappy wrestling. Look, it just had to take place, it did and we moved on, alright? Ogiwara didn’t deserve the win, but he got it. He may be getting go away heat from the fans, but even that is better than Bennett’s no heat or reaction at all.

Kaneie Ichihara vs Nukenin

This was kinda like the opening contest, but with the roles reversed and the opposite outcome. Ichihara is no great wrestler by any stretch of the imagination, whereas Nukenin has the moves, athleticism and charisma to be a really big star down the line. So of course he won the match, duh.

Ladies and gentlemen, from the man who brought you the Wood Brothers, the man who knows tag team wrestling, the man who has the answer to Mr. Miwa’s new duo of destruction, Munenori Umari presents Dallas and Dean, the McWade Brothers! Yeah, the 90s were a time of sibling tag teams everywhere. And that’s when the McWades got their first match in Japan.

Matsubara & Onodera and Taka Hoshizawa vs Psycho & The McWade Brothers (with Munenori Umari)

The McWades were the new big faces (well, heels actually) but I’d also reached to the Highland Warrior to offer a tour deal to his resident hardcore maniac, a man by the stage name of Psycho, who wrestles exactly like what you'd expect from a man under that name. This was more of an introductory match for the new guys, but with the Dynasty Warriors in it I was also trying to set up a future title challenge from the McWades if they’d live up to the hype surrounding their name. Just to be sure though, I gave Psycho the pin over Matsubara to give the gaijin some momentum while I build up the McWades into a credible threat for the tag titles.

If you wondered why the event was named the way it was, we had a little hype video package to let you know. I was, of course, in the main event match, but my BBW World Warrior title wasn’t. Instead, I’d be facing both Natsuhisa Tamura and Genghis Rahn in what we called the Hammer Smashed Head match: basically a weapon on a pole match, where the weapon was a hammer you’d get to smash other workers with. I’m not talking about the usual sledgehammer that wrestlers for some reason only use the butt end of, we had a damn meat tenderizer up there. Small, easy to used and guaranteed to cause at least one broken nose by the end of the match. Welcome to BBW!

Hammer Smashed Head match

k8tfSV4.jpg25UZG0h.png1Y07Rni.jpg25UZG0h.pnge8rzx2c.jpg

Genghis Rahn vs Natsuhisa Tamura vs Ryu Kajahara

Oh this was fun. I brought a wooden board to the ring and started the weapons action early. It was exciting, it was fast paced and it was probably a killer for Tamura who was slower and visibly tired by the end of it. Rahn was the first to go for the hammer and I shoved him off balance to send him crashing through the announcers’ table. Tamura then caught me with the Murder Bomb but of course he didn’t go for the pin, because what good would that be if the damn hammer was still hanging up there by the end of the match? Hammer in hand, Tamura closed in to beat me to a paste and I got my second wind as we fought back and forth for control of the weapon while Rahn was recollecting himself outside. I ended up putting the Kajahara Claw on Tamura, he dropped the hammer but didn’t tap and then Rahn broke it up when he came into the ring with the hammer in hand to kick me away. He then proceeded to smash that hammer again and again into Tamura’s face, so hard I legitimately feared he’d kill him or at least cause serious brain damage. For some mysterious reason, Tamura not only survived, he had a sudden surge of adrenaline that lasted just enough for him to pounce onto a stunned Rahn and hit him with the Super Murder Bomb for the pin. How we all escaped without serious injury is still a mystery to this day, but I did congratulate them both after the match for being so awesome in how they pulled this entire match off.

I offered them both touring contracts to try them out and debuted them here in a fast paced spotfest telling a simple story, white meat babyface young lion against nasty sadistic masked heel. Not that BBW was ever about a hard face/heel divide, but keeping things simple and bold helps get the characters across to a new audience. I wasn’t that mad about it really, I could sell it as the tag team champions scoring the equalizer to further their feud with the McWades. Bloodied Yet Unbowed

Sunday, Week 2 November 1997 at the Iwata Hall, Tohoku

39CYfNx.jpg

I entered the Iwata Hall and immediately heard the sounds of an ongoing argument. Sad that there was no one around for a bet whether fists would be flying already or not, I marched into the locker room and demanded to know what the hell was going on. Apparently Matsubara had gotten on everyone’s nerves by saying he’d be making more new stars out of the Peaks and the McWades once they’d wrestle for the titles. While he may have had a point, he still failed to realise he was the odd person in the scene, a clean cut grappler in a deathmatch promotion of maniacs. I did bring that up, much to his displeasure, saying the only reason he and Onodera still had the titles was because I hadn’t yet managed to establish another team to carry them. He didn’t like that either.

YKbvIkt.jpg

I figured I’d lighten the mood with a prank, so I called up Oniji Hanari and announced that he would be getting repackaged under a new killer gimmick I’d come up with. Which was absolutely believable, because I always did provide the most awesome creative ideas and Hanari’s only hope of ever having any success in the business was to nail down a killer gimmick. We went through all the details and then I gave him a trash bag with his new ring gear inside and told him go to the bathroom and put it on. Being the genius that I am, I also locked him inside, just in case he was unwilling to play ball. Which he was, meaning I was smart to lock him in and tell him he wasn’t getting out until he’d put the gear on.

King of Pain tournament match

JY8wG3m.jpg25UZG0h.pngv3byjPK.jpg

Doug Peak vs I, Butcher

I split the first round of the King of Pain tournament across two shows and with the quarterfinal pairings finalized, we began this show by going straight into the next stage of the tournament. Two gaijin hardcore psychopaths tearing it up was all it took to get the audience going, even if some of them had been hoping for a Doug vs Eddie match here instead. They’d have gone into the audience stands too, were it not for Henry Lee hidden amongst the crowd.

LQsTUfN.jpg

Lee made his presence known by grabbing Butcher from behind the barricade and cutting into his flesh with a fork he’d been carrying, which was all it took for Doug Peak to take control of the match and bring the fight back between the ropes so he could hit the House of Horrors for the pin. Peak moves on, Butcher stays behind to continue his feud with Lee.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Doug Peak defeated I, Butcher in 11:05 by pinfall with a House Of Horrors following interference from Henry Lee.

Matsudaira Morioka vs Mamoru Nagahama

This is the tag team partners clash people should be wanting to see, even if Naga-Mori hadn’t yet risen up to be the stars they later were with WEXXV. They both showed respect to each other before the start of the match and really gave it their best shot, each man pushing the other to hit harder and challenging him to stand back up every time they fell down. Take notes Matsubara and Onodera, this is how you work your style in this kind of environment. No one’s out for crisp technical wrestling or precise strikes, what people want is stiffness on offense and toughness on defense. Anyway, it was a damn good match and Nagahama got the tap out thanks to his dreaded Nagahama Guillotine, meaning he’d be moving on to the semi finals for an interesting match against Doug Peak.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Mamoru Nagahama defeated Matsudaira Morioka in 11:10 by submission with a Nagahama Guillotine.

Nukenin was out next to cut a promo on his next tournament match against SPIDER Inao and I swear it didn’t matter what he said, fans ate it up. I knew I’d found my junior heavyweight ace and if he could bulk up a bit after a while, maybe he could even be my number two. Back to the promo, the idea was to build up expectation for an Inao retaliation, but instead of him it was Madman Boone who hit the ring to make a spectacular comeback, forcing Nukenin to a quick retreat.

Madman Boone vs Psycho

If you thought the opening match was a mess, wait till you hear about this one… Both guys put the pedal to the metal straight out of the gate and turned this bout into a frantic train wreck you can’t help but observe in horror and fascination. Psycho led the match as the veteran and he unleashed his wide array of crazy attacks, including a suplex onto a bed of nails that did just as much damage to himself as it did to his opponent. I don’t know if it was the jet lag or having to follow someone else instead of improvising his stuff on the fly, but Boone didn’t seem like he was 100% there. It didn’t get better as he ran out of steam, but he did cap it off with a spectacular no hands plancha over the top rope (remember, he’s no junior heavyweight!) that saw him go through a table at ringside. That was pretty match the deciding point of the match, with Psycho basically dragging Boone back into the ring to hit the Psychotic Break and get the pinfall victory.

In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, Psycho defeated Madman Boone in 10:06 by pinfall with a Psychotic Break.

Taka Hoshizawa and Matsubara & Onodera vs Genghis Rahn and The McWade Brothers (with Munenori Umari)

This match was there to keep the tag team titles feud going, with the champions and challengers teaming up with Hoshizawa and Rahn respectively. I mean, merely seeing Hoshizawa in there should be clear enough of an indication that he was the designated man to eat the pin, but that didn’t prevent everyone involved from putting on a decent performance, including Hoshizawa who was trying to keep up with the others. In fact, being so willing to take big bumps as he is, he added that much needed hardcore element to the “straight” puroresu style of Matsubara & Onodera before he was knocked out of his boots by a huge lariat, courtesy of Dean McWade who also scored the pin.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Genghis Rahn and The McWade Brothers defeated Taka Hoshizawa and Matsubara & Onodera in 13:53 when Dean McWade defeated Taka Hoshizawa by pinfall with a Canadian Lariat.

Henry Lee vs Natsuhisa Tamura

This one continued the story from the brawl that wrapped up There Will Be Blood, but it also doubled as an unofficial title contendership match of sorts. I’d booked and promoted this before my injury so I’m glad we never officially announced it as a match for a shot at my title, but another reason I’m glad I handled it that way is because Lee seemed a bit lacking in the intensity section.

I, Butcher was supposed to show up and return the favour to Lee for costing him the tournament match earlier, but I’d been holding back on the idea;if this match wasn’t for a shot at the title, what exactly was Butcher costing Lee? That is, until the boys told me that Henry got a whole bottle of painkillers from Dr. Beefcake before the match and washed its entire contents out with a bottle of vodka. I don’t know how that crazy bastard hadn’t killed himself already, but I told Butcher to go out and mess him up real bad. One, because he f***ing deserved it for performing high and two, because we needed a reason to legitimately rush him to the hospital for stomach treatment. Not waiting for me to say it twice, Butcher stormed to the ring and really let loose on Lee, before setting up the chair for Tamura to hit his Super Murder Bomb and get the pin as whatever medical staff we had available (besides Dr. Beefcake, obviously) hit the ring to stretcher Lee away.

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Natsuhisa Tamura defeated Henry Lee in 13:38 by pinfall with a Super Murder Bomb. During the match we also had I, Butcher distract Henry Lee.

I was pretty fresh backstage since I hadn’t made an appearance and even though my jaw hurt with every word I said, I praised Tamura once again for his awesomeness and patted Rahn in the back for a solid performance. Boone wasn’t as lucky though, he got some flak about his performance that night, which he tried to blame on his recent injury, but I simply told him that if something like that was going to impact his performance that much, he might as well never tour with BBW again. That’ll teach that young punk.

Henry Lee wasn’t around to hear the riot act after the show, but I did inform him that all medical costs for his treatment would be deducted from his salary. He told me to go f**k myself. Which I did, thanks to some well paid and good looking Sendai girls. Bet it was much better than spending the night alone in a hospital bed. Who's the real loser here, huh?
