PFL 8: Regular Season 2020 - PLAY BY PLAY RESUME & RESULTS

YAIR RODRIGUEZ EARNS SPLIT VERDICT OVER CHAD MENDES IN PFL 8 MAIN EVENT

After 3 rounds of the featherweight battle between Yair Rodriguez and Chad Mendes, he ended in a close decision in favor of the Mexican on his PFL debut.

As expected, Rodriguez would have a long night against Mendes, who was the local fighter and had the support of fans at The Forum in California, and soon Mendes tried to put Rodriguez on the ground, but he did it after trying a pass guard Rodriguez reversed and managed to control the fight over the top and at the end of the round got blows that seemed to leave Mendes in trouble.

In the second round Rodriguez showed a lot of quality in the fight standing, controlling much of the round with their threads and kicks in the body that wore Mendes during the round.

In the last round Mendes captured his strategy on Rodriguez's legs, while the Mexican continued with his streak strokes.

In the end, two judges were favorable to Rodriguez and one to Mendes, giving Rodriguez a very tight decision. With the results both fighters advanced to the playoffs.

In the co-main event, Albert Tumenov kept his streak going by beating Martin Kampmann by knockout. Despite Kampmann's dominance in the first round, Tumenov came back more aggressive in the second round and landed a kick to the head that stunned and knocked Kampmann down, Tumenov hit a few more blows to the ground, but abandoned the ground position and went back to the standing fight. And when he got back on his feet, with Kampamann visibly shaken, Tumenov launched a sure uppercut that put Kampmann out.

In a rematch of the most twisted fights in history, Travis Browne and Andrei Arlovski gave MMA fans another big fight tonight. But this time, Browne was the winner. In the first round, Browne got a knockdown on Arlovski, but he couldn't define the fight and Arlovski held on until the end of the round. In the second round a straight from Arlovski that ended with a kick to the head, made Browne in trouble, Arlovski tried to define the fight but Browne escaped and in the end Arlovski elbowed the clinch, which opened a cut in Browne. The third round came with a lot of expectations about who would take the fight, but it didn't last a minute after Browne landed a hard right-sided blow to Arlovski's chin and immediately knocked him out.

The other two fights on the card also did not reach the points. The older brother of legend Fedor Emelianenko, Aleksander Emelianenko got his second win of the season, after knocking out former UFC heavyweight challenger Gabriel Gonzaga. With a Russian pressure early, "Napao" began to feel the hard blows and after a powerful right cross Gonzaga was knocked out in the first round.

Welterweight champion of the 2019 season, Ray Cooper III, took his second victory by submitting Ryan LaFlare. With an amazing strategy, Cooper tried from the beginning to control LaFlare, which began supporting well, more could not take a long time, and eventually takendown by Cooper. LaFlare managed to defend Cooper's first attempt at Guillotina, but in the second, and with better technique and more pressure, LaFlare had no choice but to tap.

Earlier: A 125-pound clash Matheus Nicolau stopped Chico Camus via technical knockout 2:17 into Round 1; Andre Harrison took a unanimous decision against Alexandre Almeida at featherweight; Antonio Silva knocks out Francimar Barroso with punch at the 2:35 mark of Round 2 at 265 pounds; Shamil Gamzatov defeated Fabio Maldonado with a TKO in 1:22 into Round 1 at light heavyweight; and Joe Riggs captured a unanimous verdict against Tamdan McCrory at Middleweight.

JOSEPH BENAVIDEZ EDGES ALEKSANDER DOLKASCHUK IN PFL FIGHT NIGHT 6 MAIN EVENT; TRUJILLO UPSET AOKI

Tonight's PFL Fight Night brought 16 fights on his card, with fights that were confirmed as possible reserves in the playoffs that start next month.

In the main event, former UFC Flyweight champion Joseph Benavidez debuted with a submission in the second round against former M-1 Global Flyweight champion. Benavidez was better throughout the match and in the second round Benavidez found the right moment and fitted the blow, leaving no other alternative to the Russian if not to tap.

In the co-main event Derrick Lewis was named as a favorite, but Karol Bedorf surprised fans in the arena. In a first round of Lewis dominance, Bedorf started to improve in the second round taking Lewis to the ground and getting tired of "black beast". And already in the third round after an exchange of punches, Bedorf stunned Lewis with a beautiful right cross, showing that he was bad, Bedorf advanced and knocked Lewis with big right hook, and with a few more strikes on the ground the referee stopped the fight.

And this was not the biggest underdog at night. Considered a favorite of the former three times ONE Championship Lightweight champ, Shinya Aoki faced savage Abel Trujillo. With an aggressive game and showing a form much larger than that of his opponent Trujillo defended well in the first round the submissions that the Japanese tried. But in the second round, Trujillo shook Aoki at the beginning of the round, showing that he was feeling the powerful blows of Trujillo, Aoki tried to hold on, another hard blow knocked him down and Trujillo advanced and with more blows ended the fight. A performance that was certainly the biggest victory of Trujillo's career.

In other actions on the main card, former Bellator MMA middleweight champion Rafael Carvalho, who with a well-aimed kick to the head, led Clifford Starks to knockout him in the second round; Japanese Michihiro Omigawa and Reina Miura won by submission in the first round, Humberto Bandenay and Tamikka Brents; Sergio Moraes dominated Matt Brown for three rounds winning by unanimous decision and Karlos Vemola and Volkan Ozdemir reached the end of the 15 minutes and a split decision in favor of Vemola was the final verdict.

In the preliminaries, Ray Borg overcame Jussier Formiga by unanimous decision; Roger Gracie submitts Nikita Krylov in the second round; Dong Hyun Kim had a dominant performance over Warlley Alves; Ben Rothwell won PFL veteran Kelvin Tiller by TKO in the first round; Pavel Vitruk surprised Arnold Allen with a TKO victory in the opening round; Mansour Barnaoui overcame Ronys Torres by unanimous decision and Ediane Gomes defeated Tonya Evinger by submission in the first fight of the night.

PFL LIGHTWEIGHT ABEL TRUJILLO FAILS DRUG TEST

Abel Trujillo will be forced to sit out for one year following her suspension for a TRT drugs.

Illinois Athletic Commission, which regulated the PFL event, Trujillo has been suspended for one year after failed drug tests and win against Shinya Aoki overtuned and made a No-Contest following PFL Fight Night 6.

Abel Trujillo has denied any wrong-doing prior to his bout with Shinya Aoki, writes Chris Jones. He claims that his drug test failure (for TRT) was the result of a lab mix-up, and that his suspension is unwarrented as he was not using any illegal substances at all.

CONOR McGREGOR FINISHES CHRIS WADE IN PFL 9 MAIN EVENT

The PFL playoffs started this Friday night.

The main event brought the fight between Conor McGregor and Chris Wade, and with a wide favoritism both in the odds and for the fans, the Irishman entered with a confidence that seemed to be difficult to be broken tonight.

More in the first round, Wade seemed to want to complicate things, right from the start he got a takedown and took McGregor to the ground. Without wanting to leave the American comfortable, McGregor tried, to the surprise of the fans, some attempts at submissions, which were well defended by Wade. And soon McGregor managed to return with the fight on his feet, but Wade continued with an aggressive wrestling that did not allow Conor to release his lethal blows.

In the second round with just 10 seconds, Wade got another takedown, and with a few strokes he tried to hurt the Irishman, who with great technique applied a triangle choke to Wade, and to the surprise of everyone in the arena, made Wade to tap. With the win McGregor faces Marcin Held in the semi-final looking for one of the places in the finals on December 31.

In the co-main event Justin Willis overtook Anthony Johnson with just over a minute, leaving fans perplexed by the result. Many were betting that Willis would not to exchange blows with Johnson, but Willis hit a sequence that led Johnson to knockdown with 36 seconds and with a few more clean punches on the ground, Dan Miragliotta had no choice to not interrupt the duel.

Still on the main card, Megan Anderson secured herself in the featherweight final, with a technical knockout after hitting a hard kick in the body causing Sarah Kaufman not to demonstrate that she could continue forcing the stop of the central referee; Ben Askren, who recently returned from retirement, overcame the 2018 welteweight season winner, Magomed Magomedkherimov, showing that he has returned to his old form and could win the million dollar tournament. Askren submitted the Russian with a rear naked choke in the second round; Anatoly Tokov overcame Hector Lombard in a unanimous decision with a 29-28 triple; Gilbert Melendez started with a little work, but in the end he overcame Mads Burnell in the unanimous decision; In a very close fight Smealinho Rama finally fought 3 rounds this season and overcame Rashid Yusupov, in a fight very contested by the fans, by split decision and in the first and more balanced fight on the card, Jarred Brooks reached his fifth consecutive victory by defeating Magomed Bibulatov.

In the preliminaries, Marcin Held submit Former PRIDE FC champion Takanori Gomi in first round; Bryan Caraway won the submission of the night, with an d'arce choke applied to Andre Harrison; Ben Rothwell knocked out Satoshi Ishii in the second round; Ray Cooper III reached another championship, with a knockout over newcomer Alan Jouban in the third round; Jordan Johnson knocked out Elias Theodorou in the first round, it was Theodorou's first time knocked out in just over 20 career fights; In a close match Ian McCall overcame Zhalgas Zhumagulov by split decision and at the opening of the card Rafael Cavalcante overcame Shamil Gamzatov by TKO in the opening round.

RONDA ROUSEY ARMBAR TAPS KAYLA HARRISON AT MAIN EVENT

In the duel of the two greatest judo athletes in MMA history Ronda Rousey did better.

Ronda Rousey reaches the end of the 2020 PFL season, after beating Kayla Harrison by submission in the third round. At the start of the fight Rousey took Harrison to the ground with a takedown and dominated until the end of the round, showing that his greatest experience in MMA could make a difference.

The second round was not much different with Rousey getting a single leg, taking Harrison down and keeping her under, and putting more pressure on Harrison for the last round.

In the third round, Harrison seemed to be more attentive to Rousey's single leg attempts, more after being placed against the cage Harrison was unable to avoid, and was stopped by Rousey who already fell in half guard and when trying to leave Harrison got complicated getting under de Rousey in the north-south position, and taking advantage of it Rousey tried an armbar that was defended by Harrison, who inverted the position and ended up over Rousey in a rare moment in the fight. More Harrison had little to take advantage of, as Rousey got an armbar again and this time Harrison was forced to tap out.

With that Rousey face Megan Anderson in the featherweight final of the 2020 season.

In the co-main event, PFL veteran Vinny Magalhaes and Roger Gracie, two of the greatest MMA grapplers, faced off. The expectation of the fight to go to the end or to stand, due to the technical quality of both in Jiu Jitsu, but that was not what was seen. Magalhaes put Gracie down, and tried some transitions and blows to try to end the fight and after little action the fight came back on its feet with Gracie hitting a blow that opened a cut in Magalhaes.

In the second round, Magalhaes again went to the takedown over Gracie and despite applying the takedown, he ended up being caught in a Guillotine by Gracie and was forced to tap.

Meanwhile on the main card, Gregor Gillespie overcame Will Brooks in a tough fight, winning by split decision; Stephen Thompson made a comeback by defeating Tarec Saffiedine, after being dominated by two rounds; Ray Borg defeated Damacio Page by unanimous decision; Tyler Diamond had another great performance when submitting Brendan Loughnane by rear naked choke in the first round; Sergei Kharitonov knocked Philipe Lins out in the first round while former Bellator MMA middleweight champion Rafael Carvalho beat Nicholas Musoke by TKO in the second round.

In the preliminaries, Gleison Tibau was the underdog of the night when he overcame Rory MacDonald in the rematch, with a leglock already in the last round of the fight; Matheus Nicolau and John Moraga battled for three rounds, with the Brazilian overcoming the split decision; The two-time champion of the PFL season, Natan Schulte overcame Mark Bocek by TKO in the first round returning to the finals; Aleksander Emelianenko got the knockout of the night, with a jumping frontal kick, in the face of Antonio Silva in 28 seconds; Movlid Khaybulaev got his rematch by overcoming Daniel Pineda by split decision; Ivan Shtyrkov also managed his rematch to beat Bozigit Ataev by TKO in the opening round and Brandon Halsey overcame Chidi Njokuani by submission in the first fight of the night.
