I'm probably way off on this tournament, but I feel like heels have to win and none of the others really feel like they've done enough (read: anything) to deserve winning this one. Plus Marvin loves himself a rematch so why not? And it keeps Dreadnought strong for when he inevitably loses to PJ

Earnest, “Hello and welcome back to another exciting night of action here at the Fountain Square Theatre. Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis is back for the second annual March Madness tournament. Tonight, eight teams will compete in a single-elimination, one-night tournament to decide not only who will win the tournament but also who will challenge for the Tag Team Titles at Circle City classic. I'm joined tonight by a man who was Voted Most Likely to Wear Tweed in his high school year book, Mark Hyatt."

Hyatt, “Oh shut up Marv. Tonight's not about me. Tonight is about the eight teams... The sixteen men that are going to be competition in one of the most gruelling tests of a professional's abilities. Getting in the ring and going toe toe toe and having to survive three matches to host the trophy. I can't wait!"

Zippy Deverell comes to the ring. He is accompanied by the big cowboy Samson Sharpe and the Taggs. They all get into the ring.

Deverell, “Last month, y’all saw these three men come down to my aid after that no good dirty Roger Monteiro stole the Indiana Heavyweight title from me. Y’all saw these men come to my aid and I know many of y’all are wonderin’ why. Why did Samson Sharpe come help Zippy Deverell? Why did the Tagg Brothers show up here in CWI to help out Zippy? That’s because I’ve promised them something that has been missin’ from their careers. Freedom. For his entire career, Samson Sharpe has had other people tell him what to do. He’s played by the rules. He’s followed the instructions and where has it gotten him? To losing two straight matches and havin’ some of you online doubt his abilities -- but I told him that I can get him that professional freedom. I’ll help him realize his full potential by savin’ him from the laws of you all and helpin’ him realize that all he’s got to do is follow me. Follow Zippy Deverell and realize that we can do what we want, when we want it -- we can take what we want. We can take it when we want it. He understood that so he’s standing here with me.”

Deverell takes a pause.

Deverell, “And the brothers Tagg. These two big bastards that haven’t been given a full time job before. These two big bastards that are the best young tag team in all of this sport -- but they can’t get a full time job? Zippy Deverell has gotten them a job. Tonight, they’re going to make a statement in the March Madness tournament and tonight, Deverell’s Army begins its march to the top of the wrestlin’ world.”

Nate "the Great" DeMarcus versus "New York's Finest" Egon Merowitz

The opening contest of the second annual March Madness tournament pit big Nate DeMarcus against the young big man Ego Merowitz. Merowitz is a bright prospect for the future and this was a good opportunity for him against one of the top guys in CWI. Egon came out of the gate like a big mean cuss. He threw some really hard strikes at Nate DeMarcus and Merowitz looked impressive for the first few minutes of the match until Nate was able to take control. Nate hit a couple of big suplexes and then the Snap Tackle and got another win.

In a decent match, Nate DeMarcus defeated Egon Merowitz in 7:44 by pinfall with a Snap Tackle.

Yvonne Ericks versus Urena Frost

Rookie wrestler Yvonne Ericks was up against Urena Frost in this surprisingly good contest. Frost continues to develop as an in ring talent and in singles matches like this she really gets to shine. She led Yvonne through a very solid contest -- it was simple in terms of format, but effective. Yvonne came out of the gate early and took advantage of an overly-arrogant Frost, before Frost found an opening to take control and work Ericks over. Ericks had a few moments in the match where she looked like she was going to make the comeback, but Frost kept cutting her off. Ericks was able to mount a good comeback that saw her hit a wicked looking Pele kick and almost got the victory, but Frost was able to hit her BattleCry, a TKO, and get the pinfall victory.

In a decent match, Urena Frost defeated Yvonne Ericks in 9:51 by pinfall with a BattleCry.

The Dog Soldiers [Monteiro & Blackhawk] versus The Taggs

The first match of the opening round of the second annual March Madness tournament pit the Taggs against Roger Monteiro and his cousin Walter Blackhawk. Monteiro won the Indiana Heavyweight Championship last month by defeating Deverell and was subsequently beat down by Deverell’s newly formed army, which includes the Taggs. The Taggs are two big, mean brawlers from the mountains of Montana. Monteiro controlled the early part of the match. The new Indiana Champion hit hard and fast and the Taggs -- despite being big men, sold for him. Monteiro looked excellent, but the same cannot be said for Blackhawk who, despite being a rookie, looked like he did not come into this match in any kind of cardiovascular shape. The Taggs isolated him and worked him over with some slick team moves. The brothers were really in-sync with one another. At one point, they hit a Sidewalk Slam/Second Rope Elbow Drop combo that looked really nasty. Wolfie Tagg blasted Monteiro to knock him off the apron and Kalder hit Walter Blackhawk with a Piledriver and the Taggs got the victory and are into the next round.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, The Taggs defeated Roger Monteiro and Walter Blackhawk in 6:19 when Kalder Tagg pinned Walter Blackhawk with a Piledriver.

Roger Monteiro carried the match in terms of in-ring performance.

The Dog Soldiers [Youngblood & Stallion] versus DeColts Reborn w/ Andrew Gibson

The second match of the tournament also had Xavier DeColt, son of Steve DeColt, making his professional wrestling debut. Xavier and Danny are both good looking kids and they could have very bright futures in wrestling. Youngblood and Stallion continued to show their developing team work. Over the past year that they’ve been a team, Youngblood has really taken Stallion under his wing and the big man is turning into a solid wrestler that is making the Piledriver School of Pro Wrestling look really good. This was a good back and forth match up with neither team really dominating. Gibson did a good job at ringside. He had good energy and was moving around a lot.

PJ Strong came down to the ring during the match and Danny DeColt turned to say something to him. When Danny turned around, Youngblood came off the top rope with a Flying Tomahawk Chop. Youngblood got the pin and this version of The Dog Soldiers are into the next round of the tournament.

In a decent match, Ace Youngblood and Wild Red Stallion defeated DeColts Reborn in 9:20 when Ace Youngblood pinned Danny DeColt with a Flying Tomahawk Chop after a distraction from PJ Strong.

Chee, “Thank you for joining me this evening. Next month, you challenge American Gold for the CWI Tag Team Championship -- and the winner of your match will face the winners of this tournament in May at the Circle City Classic. How closely are you scouting teams tonight?”

Lush, “Not that closely, if I’m honest, Steffi. Look at Charlie and Jack. I mean really look at them. Do you think there is a team in this company, hell, in professional wrestling, that can stand in the ring with them? They’re young. They are in incredible shape. They are hungry for success. They are the best prospects in this sport. We’re not worried about whoever wins this tournament. Our focus is on American Gold and is on the Tag Team Titles.”

Chee, “So you’re not concerned with who wins tonight?”

Lush, “No. Why would we be? We’re concerned with American Gold next month. We’re concerned about the afterparty we are going to through when these two men behind me because CWI Tag Team Champions!”/FONT]

Patterson & Blackburn versus Bred for Battle w/ Andrew Gibson

Andrew Gibson was back out with his second duo -- Bred for Battle. They were up against the young duo of Patterson and Blackburn. Patterson and Blackburn have really struggled to put some wins together and this match was no different. They were eaten alive by Bred for Battle. Blackburn was the shining star of his team -- but even so, James Diaz and Dreadnought punished the two smaller men. They tossed them around the ring. They slammed them. They wrestled the entire match pissed off -- with a chip on their massive shoulders -- and it worked for them as Dreadnought lifted Jason Patterson high into the air and brought him crashing down with a Dread Bomb that punched their ticket to the semi finals.

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Bred for Battle defeated Patterson & Blackburn in 7:45 when Dreadnought pinned Jason Patterson with a Dread Bomb.

Minnesota Awesome versus The Wolf Pack

The final match of the opening round of the tournament pit the Mid Atlantic Wrestling standouts The Wolf Pack against the Invincible Pro Wrestling standouts Minnesota Awesome. Last year, The Wolf Pack made it all the way to the finals of the tournament and were definitely looking to improve upon their second place finish. Minnesota Awesome was making their CWI debut here and the former IPW Tag Team Champions were looking to impress Middle America with a strong performance. This was a classic style tag team match. Perry sold for his team while The Pack controlled the match. They kept him isolated and worked him over with quick tags and slick double team moves -- including their patented sitting facelock/knee drop combo. Longstaff was able to make the tag to Smallbone -- who cleaned house and ended up hitting Sean Noggin with a Lightning Kick and Minnesota Awesome were in the second round!

In a decent match, Minnesota Awesome defeated The Wolf Pack in 6:55 when Clark Smallbone pinned Sean Noggin with a Lightning Kick.

The Dog Soldiers [Youngblood & Stallion] versus The Taggs

The first of two semi-final matches in the March Madness Tournament. Ace Youngblood and Wild Red Stallion against the Taggs. In the first round, the Taggs managed to beat the other two members of the Dog Soldiers -- something that Youngblood and Stallion were well aware of going into this contest. This was a wild brawl of a match. Bret Graveson had trouble controlling this match or keeping both teams following the rules and several times he almost threw the thing out -- but stopped when he realized that would give the winner of the next match an automatic tournament victory. Ace Youngblood dove from the top rope to the floor onto Wolfie Tagg with a big crossbody that really got the crowd’s attention. Kalder Tagg hit a big boot on Wild Red Stallion that looked like it took his head off. For the entire duration of this match, it was four men just beating the hell out of each other. The Taggs looked very capable as a team, despite their inexperience, and Youngblood and Stallion looked like tough-as-nails babyfaces. Youngblood hit Kalder with a Flying Tomahawk Chop and The Dog Soldiers were off to the finals.

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Ace Youngblood and Wild Red Stallion defeated The Taggs in 8:21 when Ace Youngblood pinned Kalder Tagg with a Flying Tomahawk Chop.

This match was part of the ‘March Madness II’ tournament.

Bred for Battle w/ Andrew Gibson versus Minnesota Awesome

The second semi-final match was similar to Bred for Battle’s first round match. They were vicious. They were incredibly physical and Andrew Gibson was almost manic on the outside of the ring commanding them to hurt Minnesota Awesome more. Awesome put up the best fight that they could, but Diaz and Dreadnought were just too big and strong and mean. Diaz hit Smallbone with an Overhead Belly to Belly suplex right into the corner pads that looked like it almost killed the smaller man. Dreadnought’s Dread Bomb on Perry Longstaff hit with such force that Longstaff never flattened out -- he stay folded up while Dreadnought pinned him and Andrew Gibson’s duo was on their way to the finals.

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Bred for Battle defeated Minnesota Awesome in 8:27 when Dreadnought pinned Perry Longstaff with a Dread Bomb.

"Rowdy" Ruby Reece versus "The Mistress of the DDT" Steph Blake ©

Reece issued the challenge and Blake accepted. Despite being over social media, it was classic pro wrestling and a much needed tool for a modern company with an old-school feel that wanted to use social media appropriately. They used it to build matches and create some interest among their fans. Steph Blake has been the most consistent wrestler on the CWI roster -- and it was at this event a year ago she won the CWI Women’s Championship. She was accompanied to the ring by Talia Neema and Black Diamond -- two of the other three women in the War Maidens. Neema and Diamond didn’t get involved in the match, they were just there to support their leader as she and Reece went at it. Sabrina Wells was ringside for her partner and she kept an eye on Diamond and Neema. Reece came right for Blake and tried to end the match quickly, but the veteran Blake was too smart and was able to get out of the ring and keep away from Reece. Blake spent the early portion of the match frustrating the young graduate of the Cat’s Lair. Reece was able to finally get ahold of Blake -- and has become Blake’s custom -- Blake bumped all over for Ruby Reece. She made sure that Reece’s offense looked incredibly damaging and then when the time was right, she cut her off and quickly hit the Slingshot DDT and Steph Blake has officially held the Women’s Title for over a year.

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Steph Blake defeated Ruby Reece in 14:37 by pinfall with a Slingshot DDT. Steph Blake makes defence number seven of the CWI Women's.

The Dog Soldiers [Youngblood & Stallion] versus Bred for Battle w/ Andrew Gibson

The March Madness tournament all came down to this. Two teams that know each other very well. Two teams that spent the better part of a year battling it out in various forms. The crowd was really into this. This was the first match where Dreadnought and James Diaz really sold anything -- because Stallion was just as big as Diaz. Dreadnought, even though he has been slammed by PJ Strong before -- still didn’t leave his feet -- though he did take a bump from a huge clothesline from Stallion. Youngblood took the brunt of the beating from Bred for Battle when we settled into the heat portion of the contest. The veteran just knew how to get the crowd behind him. At one point, Diaz was mounted on top of Youngblood and was raining blows down onto him and an elbow strike busted Youngblood open. Instead of stun Youngblood, it fired him up. He started his comeback with blood coming down from his eye and the crowd was really into him. He went to make the tag to Wild Red Stallion -- but Stallion wasn’t on the apron! Instead, Stallion was laid out on the outside and on the entry way was Samson Sharpe -- and he was smirking big. Youngblood turned around and Dreadnought was there to hit his third Dread Bomb of the evening and Bred for Battle had won March Madness!

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Bred for Battle defeated Ace Youngblood and Wild Red Stallion in 12:53 when Dreadnought pinned Ace Youngblood with a Dread Bomb following interference from Samson Sharpe. Dreadnought and James Diaz win the CWI March Madness.

This match was part of the 'March Madness II' tournament.

"The Indiana Strangler" Conner Threepwood versus Acid

The main event of the evening lived up to expectations between wrestlers this good. Despite Acid not really having made a big splash in CWI or being a big threat, he was in the spot against his student once again (rumor is that Marvin Earnest tried to bring in four separate people for this spot but all of them either turned him down or were signed by larger companies). This was a good technical affair. Lots of holds and counter holds and back and forth action. Acid showed that despite his declining physical state -- that he still had a bit left in the tank (though he has also recently announced that he plans to retire from the sport) and maybe that made the audience a little bit more sympathetic to him during this. Either way, Acid hit some great offense that was reminiscent of wars he had in Japan with guys like Emerald Angel. He went for a big dive, but Threepwood blocked it and shifted into the Stretch Plum and got the submission and the victory.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, Conner Threepwood defeated Acid in 23:20 by submission with a Stretch Plum.

What exactly did Hangman mean by this I wonder. Masked Cougar had better watch himself.

We are going to have to wait and see! A lot of Hangman's lines, for anyone wondering, come from a poem by Maurice Ogden called "The Hangman". The whole poem has served as how I'm trying to model his character.

"The Indiana Strangler" Conner Threepwood versus Acid

This is very much a "Why is Acid even having this match? Conner has wiped the floor with him at every turn so long as a chair wasn't involved. Plus, there really isn't anybody else ready to challenge Ali just yet.

The Dog Soldiers versus Bred for Battle

I'm probably way off on this tournament, but I feel like heels have to win and none of the others really feel like they've done enough (read: anything) to deserve winning this one. Plus Marvin loves himself a rematch so why not? And it keeps Dreadnought strong for when he inevitably loses to PJ

The heels did have to win the tournament. You were right about how Genesis was booked. I backed myself into a corner with them because I knew Hardcore Inheritance was losing and I also had PJ that I wanted to debut strong (pun intended) and establish, so they suffered at the end of 2020 -- so the 2021 plan is about trying to reestablish them.

As far as Acid, I also got stuck there. Acid wasn't supposed to be a major player in this story at all, he was going to be in for a match against Conner and then work with the middle of the pack guys as a veteran heel, but then the game happened. Sammy Smoke was going to be the heel aligned with Ali, but he got signed. Then it was going to be a released Big Smack Scott, but then as soon as negotiations started with him he got signed. Then it was going to be Nelson Callum. Same thing happened. And Ernest Youngman. And Findlay. So I got to a point where I said 'screw it' and just kept it with Acid because I knew he wasn't going anywhere and then he announced his retirement and I wanted to give him another main event match.

Originally Ali was also supposed to be a short term fix, but all of the signings of the other guys meant he had to stick around. I tend to hire guys a couple of months before I plan on them starting -- just in case -- and as the other guys got signed away, Ali was still there (that's part of why his early booking was suspect), but I also felt like I needed he and Conner to meet in a third singles match (since they've gone 1-1 in singles) to really finish their feud off. Hopefully it works!

I also wanted to say thank you to everyone who voted for this diary for Diary of the Month. It won Veteran Diary for the second straight month and I appreciate the overwhelming support and positive feedback. There have been some rough patches in the booking as the game is figured out (and some intentional ones as Marvin learns) and some ones from some curveballs that are thrown, but I think we are settling into some stuff and really are starting to cook with gas.

I know the roster page is out of date and I need to update it -- I'm mulling over a couple of design changes potentially, but I hope to update it in the next few days. More stuff is coming soon as we head towards Circle City Classic II in May, which will blow off some stories, continue some others, and start some new ones. But before we get there -- we have April Showers!

Once again, thank you. I hope you're continuing to enjoy the ride.

The roster page has received an update. I want to thank Questlove (and by proxy MHero) for the assistance. I wanted to redo the roster page to make it easier to maintain as well as have a slightly slicker look. Questlove graciously allowed me to tamper with the code he is using for his great new diary <a href="http://greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=548874" rel="external nofollow">$4 Wrestling</a>. I really appreciate hm letting me take it and make it my own. It should make it much easier for me to stay on top of!
