Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis returns to action with the third annual March Madness tournament. Eight teams will compete in a gruelling one-night tournament with the winning team not only getting the trophy but also a shot at the CWI Tag Team Championships at Circle City Classic III. Which team will outlast seven other teams and hoist the March Madness trophy above their heads?</p><p> </p><p>

In addition to the March Madness tournament, The Hangman will put the Mid American Championship on the line once again as he battles Nate "the Great" DeMarcus, the first man to knock him off of his feet. Nate DeMarcus won't be alone as his mentor, DC Rayne will be in his corner.</p><p> </p><p>

Hoosier Hysteria was a success and I was pleased with how we were progressing. We had several storylines that were progressing and building steam. We had momentum on our side. Even with the loss of Ozzie to CWA, going into March Madness we were as strong as ever.

My phone rang and I looked down at it. My heart sank. This was not going to be good news.

J6ohwez.jpg

"Hello Davis." I said dryly. A phone call at this time of night was not going to be good.

"Hey boss man." The Toronto native said.

"Who is it?" I asked. I didn't have time for pleasantries.

"USPW."

Shit. Another Blond lost to the deep pockets of someone else. I was sure that Davis was going to be with us for the long haul. I was certain that Davis was going to be a key player in CWI for years. A cornerstone piece. Apparently I was wrong.

"Starting when?" I asked.

"Beginning of April fulltime. I wanted to be able to finish up my commitment for March Madness." He said. At least he wasn't Ozzie Goldsteining me. At least he was going to go out looking up at the lights.

"I appreciate that." I did. I was pissed, but I understood. He wasn't getting any younger. He had worked his ass off for a chance at the big leagues. A chance at real money. Truthfully, I understood when anyone left for a bigger opportunity. I hated it but it was a reality I had to deal with. A reality I had to plan for. Those plans were going to have to change... Again.

"I didn't want to leave you hanging. I made a commitment. I have to honor that. It's how Rip taught me."

"You're doing it the right way. Thanks."

The phone call ended that way and I stared at the wall for far longer than I'd like to admit.

CANADAAAAAAAAAAAAA! :mad::mad::mad:

The opening match of the night pit the impressive youngster from the House of Stone, Hank Gunn, against one of the top luchadores on the independent scene, the </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Hollywood Luchador</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> La Estrella. La Estrella was rumored to be joining CWI full time with CWI management looking at having a couple of luchadores on the roster to add to the international appeal of the roster -- and to create a deeper roster that had more styles on it. Gunn was a good first opponent for La Estrella. Gunn was young and versatile and was able to work a good pace with La Estrella -- who was arrogant in all of his presentation. There are a lot of typical lucha spots and the crowd wasn’t expecting that but it was a good opening contest. La Estrella came off the top for a beautiful Flying Hurricanrana that Hank Gunn actually cartwheeled out of and the crowd got exited for that. Gunn hit the </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Super Kick</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> but it knocked La Estrella went through the ropes to the apron so Gunn couldn’t immediately capitalize. Gunn pulled La Estrella back into the ring and looked like he was setting up for a second </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Super Kick</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> but the arrival of Samson Sharpe to the ringside area caught Gunn off-guard. The young Canadian exchanged some words with Samson Sharpe, which allowed La Estrella to recover and set up -- and successfully hit -- his </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Hollywood Press</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> to get the win.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

In a decent match, La Estrella defeated Hank Gunn in 10:07 by pinfall with a Hollywood Press. The Mission versus The Taggs w/ Haley Buck</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

The first match of the third annual March Madness tournament pit the young lucha team of The Mission -- who have been working some dates for CWI in 2022 as part of a talent trade -- against the big bruising brothers from Montana, the Taggs. The opening portion of the match was a fast paced offensive display from The Mission, who flew through the air and around the ring and kept the Taggs from getting settled in -- but a Head Scissors attempt that was blocked by Wolfie Tagg let the Taggs take over and they never looked back. They controlled the rest of the match with hard-hitting power offense that showed that they are really developing into a fine tandem. At one point, Kalder lifted Redeemer into the air and threw him to Wolfie, who caught him and swung him down for a massive powerslam. That was followed up with a Spike Piledriver to Crusader and the Taggs are into the second round for the second straight year.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

In a decent match, The Taggs defeated The Mission in 8:58 when Wolfie Tagg pinned Crusader with a Spike Piledriver.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

The Texas Express versus Minnesota Awesome</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

The second match of the March Madness tournament pit Minnesota Awesome against Texas Express. The Texas Express was making their standard tag team match debut here -- having previously only wrestled in the four way tag match at New Year Scramble. It was immediately clear that the crowd is really into The Texas Express. They like Minnesota Awesome, but the young men from the Land of A Thousand Lakes have struggled to build consistency since joining CWI a year ago. This was an excellent babyface style match. With both teams being fan favorites, no team controlled the match and they went back and forth. There were no extended heat spots, just good solid wrestling and teamwork. Minnesota Awesome tried to work a faster pace and take to the sky while the stronger Texas Express tried to use power to slow the match down and use some high impact moves. Cooper and Turk used their size and strength advantage to seize control of the match and they never looked back. Cooper even took to the sky for a big Top Rope Elbow Drop right into the center of Clark Smallbone’s chest and The Texas Express was on to the second round to wrestle The Taggs!</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, The Texas Express defeated Minnesota Awesome in 10:14 when Cooper Christie pinned Clark Smallbone with a Top Rope Elbow Drop.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

Standing in the ring waiting for him was Taylor Gordy, the newest member of the CWI broadcast team -- with Steffi Chee having been so viciously Choke Slammed last month. Gordy looked calmed and collected like he was a seasoned pro despite this being his first appearance.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

Deverell, “I don’t need you. You go ahead and sit your ass down while I talk. Pepper Pelton. I found out earlier today that next month at April Showers you’re going to be getting back in the ring with me. Apparently, the CWI matchmaking committee and the Indiana State Athletic Commission had a problem with how I won the Indiana Championship. Apparently, they have a problem with the hillbilly getting a win and they’re trying to hold me down. I get it. They don’t want someone like me representing the state of Indiana as its champion. They look down on me because I don’t have a fancy education. I don’t have no paper from some fancy college. I don’t have a fancy athletic background they can use to get donations to improve buildings. I get it. I’m just a simple hillbilly from Kentucky. I’m just the son of a coal miner. I don’t use a lot of wristlocks or hammerlocks and I ain’t a scientific wrestling marvel. I don’t jump off the top rope. I’m just a simple man with two fists who knows how to use them. That’s what I am, but I’m also the Indiana Heavyweight Champion. I won because I’m better than you Pepper Pelton. I won because I outsmarted you and next month at April Showers I’ll do it again. I’m going in as Indiana Champion and I’m leaving as Indiana Champion and the CWI matchmaking committee and the Indiana State Athletic Commission can choke on that.”</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

“Indiana’s Finest” Mr. Grappling versus "Triple Threat" Davis Wayne Newton</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

Coming off the fired up promo from the Indiana Heavyweight Champion was an excellent match up from Mr. Grappling and Davis Wayne Newton. Newton, the USPW bound Toronto native was the latest Canadian Blond to leave CWI. The crowd was extra anti-Newton throughout the contest. Everything in this match was snug. The opening tie up saw both men jockeying for position and dominance. Grappling pushed Newton back into the corner and gave a clean break. He did it a second time and on the third time, Newton actually shoved a thumb into the eye of Mr. Grappling and took control of the match. This was primarily a holds-based wrestling match. There weren’t a lot of strikes thrown. Instead Newton and Grappling showed their grappling abilities. Newton focused on the neck of Mr. Grappling -- working to soften him up for either the Fisherman’s Suplex or the STF that he used. He tried to lock in the STF several times, but Mr. Grappling blocked it each time. He wrestled his way back to his feet and hit several quick suplexes and then hit his </span></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><em>Blast From The Past</em></span></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> and got the victory!</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

The Dog Soldiers [Youngblood & Blackhawk] versus The Player's Club w/ Lucinda Lush</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

The third of the fourth quarter final matches was up next. Ace Youngblood was appearing in his third straight March Madness -- the only man to have competed in all three so far. The first two were with his usual partner Wild Red Stallion, but Stallion was working in ACPW on this evening so Walter Blackhawk was filling in. The Player’s Club was looking to get some momentum back on their side. Both young men ooze charisma and star quality and have been working to develop their in-ring skills (but they still have plenty of room to grow). For the experienced eye, it was clear that Youngblood was leading the match and that Walter Blackhawk continued his struggles. The Player’s Club worked well together as a team and were able to isolate Blackhawk from Youngblood and really put the boots to him. American Gold versus Canadian Blonds</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

With Ozzie Goldstein leaving to go to CWA, Flash Savage looked like he would be teaming with Robin DaLay full time. On paper, Savage and DaLay make a very interesting team. Savage is the arrogant small man with a Napoleon complex and DaLay was the big strong heavyweight to enforce Savage’s mouth. Without Goldstein and Newton to overshadow him, Savage could be a breakout heel. American Gold was incredibly popular coming into this match and were a lot of people’s odds-on-favorites to win the tournament (second only to The Texas Express). This was the best match of the opening round. Savage and DaLay had a natural chemistry as a team that was hard to find and American Gold continue to improve as a duo. Chamberlain continued to be a crowd-favorite with his jaw-dropping athlecisim for a man his size, including him doing a standing leap from the mat to the top rope and then he spun and jumped off the top rope onto DaLay for a big crossbody that really got the crowd’s attention. While the match wasn’t long, it was very effective. Flash Savage took a big back drop out of the ring to the floor when he tried to interfere and that allowed American Gold to execute a Super Kick onto Robin DaLay that spun him around right into a big Belly to Belly Suplex and Marcus English pinned him and American Gold was into the second round!</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

The reigning Tag Team Champions climbed into the ring and towered over Gordy -- which helped make them look even more menacing. Gibson stood next to Gordy.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

Gordy, “Mr. Gibson, your team has become the most successful team in CWI’s history. They have held the Tag Team Titles since May of last year and have more defences than every other team to hold the tag team titles combined. To what do you contribute their success?”</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

Gibson, “Are you really asking me that? That’s your first question as a CWI employee? Look at these men, Taylor Gordy. These aren’t average men. Look at the size of them. They are unstoppable. They are powerhouses. They are punishers. They are forces of nature. They were born into this business. They were bred for the wars in this ring. They are smart and agile. They are strong and quick. They are the perfect combination of all of every skill you need to be a successful professional wrestler and they are successful.”</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

Gordy, “They certainly are. Last year, they won the March Madness tournament and went on to defeat American Gold to win the Tag Team Championships. They know exactly what it takes to win and to be at the top here in Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis. What do you have to say to whomever wins the tournament tonight?”</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

Gibson, “They better say their prayers. Whomever wins the March Madness tournament gets a shot at us at the third annual Circle City Classic. Whomever wins tonight signs their own warrants. Whomever wins tonight is guaranteed to get their asseswhooped. They are guaranteed to get hurt. They are guaranteed to lose. Bred for Battle is doing exactly what I said they would do when CWI started in 2020. They have become the most dominant force in tag team wrestling. There isn’t a team in this tournament that can stop them. There isn’t a team on this planet that can stop them. Whomever wins tonight better make peace with that. They better call their mothers and their girlfriends. They are better get their affairs in order because when whoever wins tonight gets in the ring with Bred for Battle, they are putting their careers in jeopardy. They better understand the risks involved, because these two men only have one speed -- and that speed leads to devastation.”</span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

The Texas Express versus The Taggs w/ Haley Buck</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

The first match of the semi-finals pit two young, impressive tag teams. Both are big and strong and athletic, but The Texas Express was definitely a more well-rounded tag team. They had more technical skills, went to the air more, and could do a bit more than the Taggs, who were the quintessential smash-mouth brawling tag team. The contrast made for some crowd-thrilling action. The Texas Express were both graduates of the Boot Camp and Marvin Earnest had shown a desire to feature talent that he was familiar with from his MAW time. The match started as a wrestling match with the Express working quick tags and holds and showing their All-American smiles and all-around game, but it quickly devolved into a fight -- which clearly favored The Taggs. Kalder and Wolfie isolated star-quality-laden Cooper Christie on their side of the ring. They cut the ring in half and really roughed up Cooper Christie -- including busting him open really bad with a hard right hand. The blood flowed freely and Christie was clearly out of it. Referee Bret Graveson checked on Christie multiple times and looked like he wanted to stop the match, but Christie and Trenneman, on the outside, begged Graveson to let the match continue. The Taggs attacked the wound -- including a Second Rope Fist Drop right onto the wound. Christie’s eyes rolled back in his head. He looked like he was on another planet The ringside doctor -- appointed by the State Athletic Commission -- came to the ring apron and checked Christie and consulted with referee Bret Graveson. Graveson, at the behest of the doctor, was forced to stop the match because Christie could not continue.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, The Taggs defeated The Texas Express in 11:26 by stoppage when Cooper Christie was injured and could not continue.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

American Gold versus The Player's Club w/ Lucinda Lush</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

The second semi-final was another thrilling affair. All four of these men just ooze charisma and star power and both teams were incredibly popular. Lucinda Lush was excellent at ringside with her Hollywood Vixen persona (think Melina from MNM). The duos seemed like natural rivals and the action was good. The Player’s Club was willing to cheat and bend the rules and Jez McArthur warned them several times to watch the cheating. They hit some good double team moves -- including several double team Vertical Suplexes that slammed English into the mat. English sold everything beautifully. He clutched the small of his back and the Player’s Club continued to work it over. Pryde it a Sidewalk Back Breaker and then reached up to tag in Charlie Corner, who came off the second rope with an elbow -- driving English’ back against Pryde’s leg. English made the big tag to Chamberlain and Chamberlain cleaned house. Corner and Pryde took big bumps for Chamberlain. They really got some air and then Charlie Corner ate the Superkick/Belly to Belly Combo and American Gold was headed to the finals!</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

"The Indiana Strangler" Conner Threepwood versus "New York's Finest" Egon Merowitz</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

Conner Threepwood had been on a slump the last few months. Ever since losing the title to The Hangman, he hadn’t been able to capture the same success, but he came into this match looking incredibly motivated. Egon Merowitz came out of the gate trying to be physical and assert his will on Threepwood. Threepwood worked to keep a hold of Egon and prevent the big man from hitting his hard-hitting strikes. Threepwood was able to hit several Release German Suplexes on the bigger back and was clearly working to set up the Stretch Plum submission that had been the most feared submission hold in independent professional wrestling. Merowitz was able to hit some big moves and looked dangerous, but Threepwood continued to be the superior wrestler and locked in the Stretch Plum and Merowitz was forced to submit.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

American Gold versus The Taggs w/ Haley Buck</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

The tournament finals were here. English was favoring his back and The Taggs looked supremely confident after getting the doctor stoppage in the previous round. Haley Buck looked confident on the outside and was carrying a mason jar of a clear liquid that she took a drink from several times during the match. This continued the trend of excellent matches in what had been the best March Madness to date. Marcus English took the heat and the Taggs continued the assault on his back. They hit him with several bodyslams and surprisingly worked some submission holds that focused on the lower back. They took English to the outside of the ring and slammed him on the unprotected hardwood floor. Bret Graveson demanded they get back in the ring and after slamming English on the apron of the ring -- the hardest part of the ring -- they did. They made several pinfall attempts, but English kicked out of each one and then made the tag to his fresh partner. Chamberlain went right after both Taggs. He hit both of them with Overhead Belly to Belly Suplexes that sent them flying through the air. Chamberlain climbed onto the top rope and leaped off onto both Taggs with a big Flying Crossbody. The crowd exploded and Chamberlain hit big T-Bone Suplexes. The Taggs sold everything just like they needed to. English ws back up and Chamberlain tagged him in and Kalder Tagg ate the Superkick/Belly to Belly Combo and then Marcus English made the cover and American Gold won the third annual March Madness tournament.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, American Gold defeated The Taggs in 14:49 when Marcus English pinned Kalder Tagg with a Superkick/Belly To Belly Combo. Nate "the Great" DeMarcus w/ DC Rayne versus The Hangman ©</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

The main event was a highly anticipated rematch. In January, Nate DeMarcus became the first man to knock The Hangman off of his feet. The Hangman came into the match incredibly motivated to prove that he wasn’t going to get knocked off his feet again. DC Rayne came dressed like a coach and was chirping out advice on the outside of the ring. The Hangman didn’t waste any time going to work. He threw fists and elbows and was trying to finish the match quickly, but Nate DeMarcus was ready and he didn’t back down. He fought back. The Hangman hit a Big Boot and knocked Nate DeMarcus out of the ring with it. DeMarcus came back in and went for a double leg takedown, but was tossed to the side. DeMarcus came back and blocked a Lariat attempt from the Hangman and hit him with a German Suplex that turned him inside out and the crowd exploded to see The Hangman get knocked down for the second time. Nate DeMarcus slammed his arms off his chest and backed up and looked like he was ready to hit the </span></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><em>Snap Tackle</em></span></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">. The Hangman staggered to his feet and grabbed referee Jez McArthur for leverage. McArthur pulled The Hangman off of his shirt and started to reprimand him. While that was going on DC Rayne suddenly climbed up onto the apron and pulled a long sock filled with something out of his pants. He slammed it into the back of Nate DeMarcus’ neck and head. DeMarcus stumbled forward and suddenly The Hangman hit him with a huge </span></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><em>Choke Slam</em></span></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">. The Hangman made the cover as the crowd booed and the Hangman successfully retained the championship.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

In an exceptional match, The Hangman defeated Nate DeMarcus in 13:56 by pinfall with a Choke Slam following interference from D.C. Rayne. The Hangman makes defence number seven of the COTT Mid American title.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">

The cameraman and Taylor Gordy came bursting out of the doors at the Fountain Square Theatre into a parking lot where DC Rayne was tossing a bag into the backseat of a fully restored 1976 Cadillac Coup Deville.</p><p> </p><p>

Gordy, "DC! DC! Wait a minute! Why on earth did you do that to Nate DeMarcus? I thought he was your protege?"</p><p> </p><p>

DC Rayne wheeled around and looked at the microphone being thrust into his face.</p><p> </p><p>

Rayne, "Seventeen years I've been in this business. Seventeen long years. Since I was just a kid. In that entire time, I've plaid second fiddle. Second fiddle to Eddie. Sure, Eddie's my friend -- but he was always the one who got the opportunities. He was the one who got the interviews. He was The Natural and I was just The Storm. In seventeen years in this business, I have yet to be able to stand on my own. As my own man. USPW let me go and I thought finally, I was going to get my opportunity to stand on my own two feet. I was going to show what I could do by myself. Then the phone rang and it was Nate DeMarcus -- this punk kid who has never left me alone. This punk kid who used to come to Mid Atlantic Shows when I was there who always wanted my advice and my help. He wanted me to come coach him. He wanted me to come be second fiddle to him. Again someone wanted me to be second fiddle to them and I couldn't do it. I saw the opportunity to stand on my own. To make my name. And I took the opportunity."</p><p> </p><p>

Gordy, "So this is all because you want to be a solo star?"</p><p> </p><p>

Rayne, "No. It's all because I want people to see me as DC Rayne. The Storm. The man who climbed up out of the swamps of Cajun country by his own bootstraps and made himself a millionaire. My daddy worked in the sugarcane fields and my mama worked in a laundry mat and look at me. I drive a Caddilac. I wear designer clothes. I wear a Rolex. I made it -- all because I worked hard and because I'm better than every person I step into the ring with -- but I've been the quiet second fiddle for too long. Now I'm standing on my own two feet and next month, I'm coming back here to Indianapolis to prove that by beating Nate DeMarcus' ass in front of all his fans and show the world that it is now time for DC Rayne to shine. The Storm is coming and you can't own run it."</p><p> </p><p>

With that, DC Rayne slid into the driver's seat and peeled out of the parking lot.</p><p> </p><p>

Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis will be back at the Fountain Square Theatre for April Showers the third week of April. After costing Nate DeMarcus the Mid American Championship last month, D.C. Rayne makes his in-ring debut as he goes one on one with Nate in what should be a hotly contested, very personal match up.</p><p> </p><p>

Urena Frost will put her Women's Championship on the line against Coco Malloy. Can Frost pull off her third defence or will Coco Malloy win her first singles championship of her career?</p><p> </p><p>

Zippy Deverell and Pepper Pelton meet with the Indiana Heavyweight Championship on the line. Who will walk out with the belt? Honey Badger makes her CWI in-ring debut. In Feburary, she cost Lucy Stone-McFly the Women's Championship. Badger has been very vocal on Twitter that she thinks it's nepotism that has gotten Lucy her opportunities so far -- while Badger is the best graduate to ever come out of the House of Stone. She's even claimed that Lucy's Uncle Dan likes Badger more. Who will win when they clash?</p><p> </p><p>

All of this and so much more!</p><p> </p><p>

He didn’t have to wait long as former CWI Women’s Champion Felicia Luck made her way to the ring. She had not been seen since she lost the title to Urena Frost at New Year Scramble. Luck climbed into the ring and Gordy was ready for her.</span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Gordy, “At New Year Scramble, Urena Frost successfully took the Women’s Championship from you and you have been radio silent in the months that have followed. Your fans all want to know -- where have you been?”</span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Luck, “When I was a student at the Mid Atlantic Bootcamp, I learned that when you suffer a big loss you have to take a step back and reevaluate so that the losses don’t become a trend. At New Year Scramble, Urena Frost was the better woman. She left with the Women’s Title. As upset as I am that I lost, it happens to every athlete. You never go through your entire career undefeated and no champion stays champion forever. I got knocked down and I got back up. I went back to Baltimore and worked with Sam Keith on adding some new wrinkles to my game, improving as a wrestler so that I can once again be Women’s Champion here in CWI.”</span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Luck, “You’re darn right. I’m healed up. I’m refocused. James Prudence came out like a Big League Star. He had the fancy robe, the platinum blonde hair. He just looked like a star and Mr. Grappling looked like a man who had been on a roll and was motivated to get the biggest win of his young career. The opening lock-up was very snug, with both men clearly jockeying for position. Grappling pushed Prudence back into the corner and went for a clean break, but Prudence showed his veteran savvy and immediately drove a knee into the abdomen and went on the attack. Prudence was not the athlete that he was in his youth in Southern California but he still had a deep understanding of wrestling and positioning and how to use angles for the most effective strikes and quick but ultra-effective snap suplexes. Grappling took Prudence’s offense, but began to make his big comeback. He hit a big knee lift that rocked Prudence and then a Standard Vertical Suplex that he followed with a big knee drop. After the very good opening match, the crowd was treated to another solid match. Last month, Conner Threepwood made Egon Merowitz tap out to the Stretch Plum and now he had a rematch with the arrogant youngster Rafe Sashay. Sashay just oozes charisma and while his in-ring skills are a little lacking he made up for it with his personality. He pranced around the ring, he primped his hair and he ran from Conner as much as he could. Threepwood was able to get his hands on Sashay and he tossed him around the ring. While Sashay isn’t a great wrestler -- he takes great bumps and he flew through the air for each of Threepwood’s suplexes. Threepwood hit a series of German Suplexes, he hit several Rolling Snap Suplexes. He even hit a big Cravat Suplex. He locked in the </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Stretch Plum</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> and Sashay was forced to submit.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Gibson, “How am I getting them prepared? You think I’m going to reveal our gameplan in front of all of these idiots in the crowd and for American Gold to hear? You must be stupider than you look which is pretty darn hard to accomplish. I will tell you that we’ve been in the ring with American Gold twice and both times we’ve left as CWI Tag Team Champions. That’s all you need to know.”</span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Lucy Stone-McFly versus Honey Badger</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

In February, Honey Badger shocked the wrestling world by costing Lucy Stone-McFly the Women’s Championship. She then went on a media storm letting the world know that she felt that Lucy was an entitled brat who was only getting opportunities because of her last name. Honey Badger felt that she was the best product the House of Stone Dojo had produced in years -- and the best woman to ever come out of there. She’s Dan Stone Jr.’s favorite, she’s the chosen one and she’s going to prove that by beating Lucy Stone-McFly. This was a match that you would expect from two highly touted graduates of the House of Stone. It was a technical showcase with snug strikes and lots of painful submission holds. Lucy locked in a </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Stone Ankle Stretch</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> that looked like it was going to take the leg off of Honey Badger -- but Badger showed incredible toughness and desire as she fought out of the hold and got back to her feet. Lucy came charging at Badger and Badger threw a knee right into the face of Stone-McFly. Badger went on the attack like, well, a honey badger. She hit several stiff forearms and stayed in close to Lucy Stone-McFly and hit her with several powerful suplexes and even hit a wicked Butterfly Backbreaker that had a lot of impact behind it. Lucy Stone-McFly fought back to her feet and looked like she wanted to go for a </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Delorean Driver</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> but Badger had it scouted and threw Lucy threw the air with an Overhead Belly to Belly Suplex. She hit a Powerbomb that folded Lucy in half and allowed Honey Badger to get her feet up on the second rope as she made the pin and stole the win.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Zippy Deverell had been a fighting champion going into this contest and Pepper Pelton looked to get the Indiana belt back. The crowd really likes these two and was willing to overlook that they are still both pretty green. Pelton had the look of a star and was clearly in great shape. He controlled most of the match and hit a very nice </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Gorilla Press Slam</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> on Zppy Deverell. Deverell powdered out of the ring and even hopped over the barricade to take a break from the onslaught. Deverell came back into the ring and used a thumb to the eye. Deverell took control after the thumb to the eye. His offense was wild and hillbillyish -- continuing to build on the fact that he’s not a ‘wrestler’s wrestler’ but just a hillbilly who can throw fists. He threw a lot of them and Pelton took the offense and sold it great. Deverell went for a Spinning Bulldog but Pelton countered it and looked for the </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Spice Rack</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> but Deverell got out of his grasp and hit the </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Spinning Bulldog</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> and got the big win.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Coco Malloy and Urena Frost have had some issues in the past with Malloy being one half of the San Diego Girls and Frost being one half of the Femme Fatales -- and one third of the War Maidens. Their paths have crossed and now they crossed again for the Women’s Championship. Both women have star written all over them. Coco Malloy is a very popular member of the women’s roster and her energy was infectious. The crowd really was behind her against Frost -- and Urena Frost had been the MVP of the women’s division. Her performances each month were the most consistent on the entire roster. This was no different here. Frost and Malloy went at each other with a breakneck, modern pace. It was filled with high impact moves and had a lot of that SoCal lucha/puro hybrid that has become so common over the past several years. Malloy hit several big aerial moves, including a big flying headscissors where she did several rotations through the air. Malloy went for her Flying Bulldog, but Frost moved out of the way and hit the </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>BattleCry</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> on Malloy to get the victory and the title defence.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Nate "the Great" DeMarcus versus "The Storm" D.C. Rayne</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

The main event of the evening was a very personal affair between two supposed friends. This felt like a match between two people that were mad at each other. It was physically and messy in all of the right ways. This was old school pro wrestling grudge. Referee Jez McArthur gave both men a lot of leeway with closed fists. They brawled around the ringside area. They thew each other into the wooden (that’s right, CWI uses wooden and not steel) steps. They both went into the bicycle rails that are used as guard rails. Both took big bumps on the hard wooden floor -- and McArthur refused to count either man out. He was showing his power as senior CWI official to let these men solve their issue. DeMarcus was sent head first into the ring post and it busted him open. D.C. Rayne was slingshotted over the railing into the crowd and he must have hit his head on something because he came up bloody. They went back into the ring bloody messes and the crowd ate up all of it. This was the kind of match Nate needed to show his versatility and his fiery babyface side. He sold brilliantly for D.C. Rayne, but he also sold without dying. D.C. sold when it was his turn like Nate DeMarcus was the second coming of Sam Strong. This was a coming out party for both men. D.C. Rayne proved throughout the match that he had the capabilities to stand on his own two feet and Nate DeMarcus showed that he was ready to break out of the pack. D.C. hit the </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Storm Damage</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> on Nate DeMarcus and it looked like that was all she wrote -- but somehow, some way, Nate DeMarcus kicked out. The crowd exploded when he did and then Nate hit a Stalling Suplex -- with blood pouring from his face -- and a </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Snap Tackle</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> and Nate DeMarcus had defeated D.C. Rayne.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

In an exceptional match, Nate DeMarcus defeated D.C. Rayne in 22:12 by pinfall with a Snap Tackle.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

DeMarcus, “Hangman.. Next month, Circle City Classic III. It’s going to be me and you. Mid American Championship on the line. One final time, but this time, we are going to be inside the ring with a fifteen foot high steel cage surrounding us. No disqualifications. No interference. Just you and me settling this thing once and for all. You walk around here like you’re the executioner of careers. You’re the man with the rope and the gallows and all that shit. You’ve been impressive. I’ll give you that, but look at me. I’m standing here in this ring covered in my blood, covered in D.C. Rayne’s blood, and I’m telling you that next month, right here in Fountain Square Theatre, at Circle City Classic III, I’m going to become Mid American Champion and I’m going to be the one to end The Hangman.”</span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

"Stacy, let me get another." I held up my glass for the extra emphasis and the blonde behind the bar nodded. This was normally her day off, but Chuck had to have his gallbladder out so Stacy picked up the extra shift. She was a good bartender. The right mix of flirty and don't-take-no-shit and she could mix a good cocktail. She refilled my Jack and Coke and went back to wiping the bar down and reminding Old Man Larry that if he said something out of line to her again she was going to bust his lip open again.</p><p> </p><p>

It was only two o'clock in the afternoon. Too early for most people but I had given myself the day off. There would be no work today. For two and a half years, I had let Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis consume me. Planning, hustling for advertisers and spot shows. Editing the shows for DVD and website releases. Doing local press. Watching hours upon hours of independent pro wrestling footage. I was constantly trying to find new talent. Talent who could pop the territory. Talent who could make a difference in our bottom line. It was a time-consuming job. We weren't a big territory, but we ran three shows a month. We had a lot of opportunities for guys to shine. You look at a guy like The Hangman -- he might have been lost in the independent shuffle if it wasn't for CWI. Now he had been our top heel since July. He had seven successful title defences -- the most of any reign with the Mid American Championship and it tied Conner for total defences. He had developed into a great young performer and he had done so because of opportunities.</p><p> </p><p>

I took a slow drink from my glass and took a bite of my sandwich. The bar's television was on one of those talking-head sports shows where two guys yell at each other back and forth and an attractive woman sat between them trying to keep the peace. It was a work, of course. Drama created ratings, even faux drama like sports personalities that were friends and just hammed it up for television. This was Indiana and playoff basketball was here and so the guys in the bar were glued to the television. I took another bite from my sandwich and sighed happily.</p><p> </p><p>

This was supposed to be my day off. I wasn't supposed to think about wrestling yet I kept finding myself wandering back to it. I loved the wrestling business and I was happy that we were building to peaks at Circle City Classic III. The Hangman and Nate DeMarcus in the cage. American Gold and Bred for Battle for the Tag Straps. Threepwood and Funky Fedora would go at it again. They had a good match in January and I had spent the last several months wanting to get back to that. I had cooled Conner off and now I was heating him back up. That was how wrestling was supposed to work. Threepwood had dominated the main events for the first year and a half and now has spent the last year cycling down only to start the build back up. It kept things fresh. It allowed for Nate DeMarcus to come into his own. It allowed Hangman to build himself into a threat. We were really rolling creatively.</p><p> </p><p>

There were also talents that were going to be finishing up at Circle City Classic. Guys were going to be leaving. I had a new crop of women ready to start that would debut in the Memorial Day Slam -- my attempt to do with the women what I do for the men in July. I was even talking to Mark and Andrew about turning one of our monthly spot shows into a women's-only show to really highlight our women and build more stories there. </p><p> </p><p>

Life was good and I took another drink and my phone rang. I looked down at it. It was Conner's number.</p><p> </p><p>

"Hey Conner, what's up?" I asked but the voice on the other end was not Conner's.</p><p> </p><p>

"Mrs. Threepwood what's wrong? I can't understand you." Conner's mom was calling me. She was crying. Sobbing. It was hard to make out what she was saying.</p><p> </p><p>

"...Dead..." I heard the word. She couldn't be serious.</p><p> </p><p>

"What do you mean, dead?"</p><p> </p><p>

"Conner's dead." She said with courage that I could not imagine.</p><p> </p><p>

"No... No. This is some kind of rib. You're kidding me."</p><p> </p><p>

"Marvin, why the hell would I kid about my son dying? What kind of miserable son of a bitch thinks a mother would joke about that?" She snapped at me and I could tell in an instant that this was not a joke. This was not a rib. This was reality.</p><p> </p><p>

"Oh my God." I managed to sputter out and it was like the whole room paused. There are moments in your life that seem to go in slow motion. Tht you can remember everything in intense detail years after it happened. This was one of those moments. I could taste the iron in my mouth. I could feel the hammering of my eardrums and the rush of blood through my system. I swallowed hard to get the taste out of my mouth.</p><p> </p><p>

"I'm..." I stammered off. It was hard to think. Hard to process. "I'm so sorry." I finally managed to say to her and I could hear her break down again.</p><p> </p><p>

"I just thought you should know." </p><p> </p><p>

"What can I do? Do you need anything?"</p><p> </p><p>

"My son."</p><p> </p><p>

I did not have a response to that. What words could I say? I didn't even know what happened. I just knew that Conner was dead and my heart was broken. Conner was my friend. He had been instrumental in getting CWI off the ground. He'd been our champion and the face of our company. He had gone to local schools to read to kids and help drum up interest. He was instrumental in getting Mr. Grappling a job. He had been professional. Quiet but a leader.</p><p> </p><p>

"Mrs. Threepwood. I'm so sorry. I can't even... Please, let me know what I can do."</p><p> </p><p>

She mumbled something and the line went dead and I immediately went over to the news sites on my phone. There it was. The second news story. Somehow being beat out by damn results.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="9mKdvZ3.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/9mKdvZ3.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

The less sensitive may laugh. They may think something was funny about a grown man falling into a shark tank at the Indianapolis Aquarium, but they didn't know what I knew. Conner had been working on a project there to build a new exhibit in the aquarium. He had shown me pictures of his progress and it was going to be an amazing exhibit. He must have fallen while working. It was a tragic accident. One that would surely be mocked by people that didn't know the man. People who didn't know Conner like I knew him. Who didn't know his charitable side. Who didn't realize this was a man who bought his mother and father a place to live. Paid off his parents' tax debt. Never asked for a handout. When I asked him to put over The Hangman, I told him that he could bump the big man if he wanted. He'd earned that, but Conner refused. He didn't want to spoil the moment for whatever babyface bumped Hangman first. He didn't think it should be him.</p><p> </p><p>

When I asked him to lose to Rafe, he did so with a smile. He knew it was best for business. He knew it was going to only add to the drama of the story and help the build to him and Funky. He had helped me find the place I'm living in. Had helped me set everything up without asking for a dime. In a business where friends aren't really friends, Conner had become a friend. He never asked me for anything. He just showed up to do his job and help make Indianapolis a viable market for pro wrestling.</p><p> </p><p>

And now he was dead. Dead before we ever got to the finish line. He wasn't going to get to see that first triple digit house. He wasn't going to see us rise. He had laid the foundation. He'd helped crafted our image with his sweat and his blood and his desire to have pro wrestling be taken seriously in his hometown.</p><p> </p><p>

I blinked back the sharp stinging in my eyes. I would not cry here. Not in public. Not into my drink. I would cry in private. I would yell out to the heavens that it wasn't fair and throw my fit later. I carefully put my phone back in my pocket and finished my drink. I left money on the bar and walked home on autopilot where I could grieve.</p><p> </p><p>
