Mid Atlantic Wrestling: Not Just Another Feeder League

I like the exchange between Cheetah Boy and Trix Triumph. I'm assuming that Cheetah took Trix under his wing? If so, I like that. Cheetah is a great mentor character.

MAW Wrestling Classic 2020

Opening Match

Tag Team Match

15-Minute Time Limit

Jaylon Martins & Joey Fili vs The Past Masters

This is a tough one to call. Martins and Fili are both on developmental deals whereas Historian and Winks are not -- but they're the full-time team, and heels and with DeMarcus and Gray as Tag Champions and Architect looking like he's going singles, that leaves you a little light on heel challengers that could provide a "fresh" program, so I'm going with the established team!

Singles Match

Josh Jacobs vs Local Talent

Local talent stares up at the lights.

Tag Team Match

15-Minute Time Limit

DeMarcus & Gray vs Deuce Deadline & Trix Triumph

Even with this being a non-title match, I expect them to win here as Deadline and Triumph aren't an established team.

Tag Team Match

The Heartbreak Express w/Lisa Bowen vs The Wolf Pack

Wolf Pack start the game as the top threats to the champions. I think they get the win here to push them into a title match in March.

Copperhead vs Miller Fforde

Fforde needs to continue to gain momentum after losing the belt to Blaze at the end of 2019

The Architect vs Bradley Blaze ©

I don't expect that this will be the end either, but Bradley only won the belt in October, so I don't think he'll drop the belt so soon.

Bonus prediction #1: What will be match of the night? - Architect and Blaze will be MOTN.

Bonus prediction #2: I'm going to guess... Kid Fantastic. He's young, Jacobs can dominate him and you probably wouldn't have any plans for him to come in.

Other possible contenders, Zippy Deverell -- but he is a far better heel so it wouldn't make sense to bring him in to eat the loss to JJ and Ace Youngblood -- who has ties to MAW and is a good babyface but might be too costly for what you're wanting to do with him -- and he could prove to be a good babyface hire down the line if someone gets poached or called up.

<div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:12px;">The Blueprint</span></strong></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p>

The Wrestling Classic has been a part of the events calendar for Mid Atlantic Wrestling for 15 years. Just as long as the Rip Chord Invitational, the Sam Keith Classic or Where It All Begins Again. Yet, it lacked the buzz or excitement of these other events. No tournament final, no storyline payoff, rarely any big stars from the Confederation made an appearance.</p><p> </p><p>

The Architect, real name Trevor Riggs, sat in Stanley Hall, the venue he wrestled in countless times over the last eight years. Eight long years of his life and now he had been given the chance to make it count. His brief run as tag team champion with Jonah Pilgrim failed to ignite the way he wanted it to, owing mostly to the fact that the tag titles were in need of rebuilding after years of being held by teams who didn’t deserve the run. And that is where Trevor found himself that day. Receiving another push nobody else thought he deserved. But Jay didn’t give up on him. Jay saw something in Trevor and he decided he was going to pay back every ounce of support in dollars from tickets. Trevor got up and walked back to the locker room to start warming up for his big match. For once the Wrestling Classic would be the show of the year, Trevor would make sure of that.</p>

Opening Match

Tag Team Match

15-Minute Time Limit

nY8vgU8.jpg& jgNIt41.jpgvs gYPF5yC.jpg& h3rOlS4.jpg

• This was a fairly back and forth tag affair with four young guys all looking to make a name for themselves. The Past Masters have been taking shots at Martins and Fili on twitter for taking up spots on the card from guys who need it, even though they have deals with TCW.

• Martins’ explosivity and Fili’s power worked well for a time but unfortunately, while Fili was caught on the outside battling The Historian, Sandman Winks locked in his Deep Sleep sleeper hold on the Mid Atlantic American champion and made him pass out.

• In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, The Past Masters defeated Jaylon Martins and Joey Fili in 10:25 when Sandman Winks submitted Jaylon Martins with a Deep Sleep.

• Joey Fili was off his game.

• Kid Fantastic came out as the local talent to face Josh Jacobs and started the match off quite strongly. He popped the crowd once or twice with his flashy escapes and innovative techniques.

• Unfortunately for him, after a few minutes Jacobs turned up the aggression and began to lay into him with hard punches and kicks.

• Fantastic did attempt once more to hit a high risk move on Jacobs, but he was caught in mid-air and drilled into the mat.

• In a decent match, Josh Jacobs defeated Kid Fantastic in 5:47 by pinfall with a Canadian Backdrop.

After his match Josh Jacobs grabbed a microphone from ringside and climbed back into the ring.

“Four months. For four months people have been tweeting at me, asking me in the street, trying to send me carrier pigeons. You’ve all been asking ‘Why’d you do it Josh? Why did you cost Miller Fforde the Mid Atlantic Championship?’ Well I’ll tell you why,” he then paused for a moment to soak in some boos from the Mid Atlantic fans before continuing.

“For ten years I’ve been in this business. For six of those years I’ve been here. And how many opportunities at that belt have I gotten? Miller Fforde is handed opportunity after opportunity and why? Because he came through the boot camp? That’s a load and you all know it! I’m better than Miller Fforde, I’ve been in the game longer than Miller Fforde, and I will beat Miller Fforde. Because that’s the thing Miller. I eat, sleep and breathe this company. I come here for every show even when I’m not on the card, because I have given everything to this company.” He smiled and pointed out at the fans before continuing again.

“And Miller Fforde will bleed this company dry before he finally ups sticks and moves on, and you should all know that. I’m the man who will save Mid Atlantic Wrestling. And Miller? You better watch your back.”

• This was a fairly by-the-numbers affair, the heels took control early, battering Tyrone Gray around the ring for a few minutes before he managed to make the hot tag to DeMarcus.

• DeMarcus flew around the ring, taking out everybody in sight before landing his Rocket Launcher shoulder tackle for the win.

• In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, DeMarcus & Gray defeated Deuce Deadline and Trix Triumph in 5:34 when Nate DeMarcus pinned Trix Triumph with a Rocket Launcher.

• Tyrone Gray seemed off his game.

As Jay Fair was raising the hands of DeMarcus & Gray two large figures emerged from behind and attacked them. DeMarcus & Gray had to be helped to the back by ringside staff while The Wolf Pack waited for their opponents for the next match.

•The Wolf Pack controlled much of this match with their power-based offence.

•The Heartbreak Express made a spirited comeback, and even looked like they had the match one a few times but the strength of their opponents overwhelmed them and led to a defeat.

•In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, The Wolf Pack defeated The Heartbreak Express in 7:54 when Sean Noggin pinned Johnny Needham with a Hangman's Neckbreaker.

Cheetah Boy came out to ringside and demanded a microphone. After threatening to punch out Marvin Earnest, he was finally given one and climbed into the ring where he began to speak. “Bradley!” He bellowed before smirking and beginning to pace around the ring.

“Oh Bradley, you’re good. Better than I gave you credit for I’ll admit. I underestimated you Bradley, I’m a big enough man to admit that. Because you see Bradley, I’ve worked for USPW and SWF. I’m the biggest star to ever run these ropes, and I let that get to my head a bit. You’re small fry Bradley, and even small fry can get lucky. But when we face off again, and I promise you, we will. There will be no hesitation, there will be no underestimation. I’m going to beat you Bradley and take back what’s rightfully mine. So have fun with The Architect tonight. But if you can’t beat him, then I’ll know losing to you was a fluke all along.” With that Cheetah Boy threw the microphone down and left the ringside area.

• Copperhead cheated early and often throughout this match, keeping Miller Fforde on the back foot for most of its 6-minute run time.

• Fforde hit a big dropkick on Copperhead to turn things around, followed by a corkscrew elbow from the middle rope and then finished things off with his Fforde Flip Face Crusher.

• In a decent match, Miller Fforde defeated Copperhead in 5:46 by pinfall with a Fforde Flip Face Crusher.

The Architect came down to the ring for his match, and took a microphone, following much the same pattern as Cheetah Boy before him, by threatening Marvin Earnest much to the delight of his commentary partner. “I was asked recently,” he began “How it felt winning the Rip Chord Invitational, knowing I didn’t deserve it. That the better man should have one.” He paused for a moment, stroked his chin and after a few seconds a cocky grin found its way upon his face.

“This is what you idiots don’t understand. The better man did win! Maybe in California they just don’t teach you this, but in this business you win by any means necessary. Frankie-Boy Fernandes didn’t have what it takes to win and now he’s run off home with his tail between his legs because he couldn’t beat The Architect, the best technical wrestler in the Confederation, nay the world! Now, watch me scare ‘The Cowboy’ back to Texas.

• This bout followed a similar formula to The Rip Chord Invitational final, as Bradley Blaze tried to come out of the gate hot but found himself cut off constantly by The Architect’s cheating and good scouting.

• After being worn down for a decent length of time, Blaze made a comeback and dropped The Architect with tough punches and big suplexes.

• The match was very back and forth with neither man seemingly looking like he would come out on top, a time limit draw looked likely.

• But when it looked like Blaze was going to hit his Dallas Drop, Cheetah Boy came down to the ring and attacked him, causing the disqualification. The Architect looked on in disbelief but thought better of having it out with Cheetah Boy, after going 22 minutes with the Mid Atlantic Champion.

• The show ended with Cheetah Boy screaming at Blaze, promising that he will beat him.

• In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Bradley Blaze defeated The Architect in 21:52 when The Architect was disqualified when Cheetah Boy ran in and attacked Bradley Blaze. Bradley Blaze makes defence number three of the Mid Atlantic Championship title.

A/N:So there we have it, the shows for this diary are done for until the full game come out, but don't worry I will be doing little things here and there over the next few weeks to try and keep things fresh and moving! Any and all comments are appreciate, constructive criticism especially because I do want to try and make this diary the best it can be.

Now, on to the prediction contest which for 2020 will be running from January-June and then July-December! I can now announce that the winner of the first prediction competition will be allowed to pick any man from the COTT to enter next year's Rip Chord Invitational! On top of that, each month's winner will be able to choose one person from the diary to be highlighted in a narrative piece, in the event of a tie, everybody gets to choose! So without further ado let's see who how things shaped up this month:

Historian: 8/8 - Excellent predictions especially on the bonuses

Sco xY2Jx: 6/8

lieon02: 5/8

Matel123: 7/8

The 6-month competition will be based on percentage of correct predictions, and you must predict on at least 3 of the 6 shows to be eligible to win!

The current top 3 are: Historian with a whopping 100% prediction rate, second we have Martel123 on 43.75% and a tie for third with both HerrBear and Sco xY2Jx on 37.50%

Solid show and the main event finish sets up nicely what I expect will be a triple threat next month for the title. Good stuff.

Thanks for the praise! Although minor spoiler, there will be no Mid Atlantic Championship match in March. Watch this space

TopRopeElbow.com presents MAW Wrestling Classic Fallout, by Ricky Gibbons

Hello fans of independent wrestling! Local expert on all things Confederation Of The Territories here to shed some light on what’s going down in Mid Atlantic Wrestling now that a few days have passed since the well-received MAW Wrestling Classic 2020.

First off, the word on the street is that current Mid Atlantic Champion Bradley Blaze won’t be appearing on the March show Super Showdown in any capacity. The company’s twitter account has also gone about hyping the return of Frankie-Boy Fernandes at Super Showdown. Could the company be trying to keep them apart for some kind of match later down the line? Only time will tell, but with both guys seemingly playing face at the moment a singles match in the near future seems unlikely. It will be interesting to see whether or not Blaze really is off Super Showdown. Hopefully he hasn’t picked up any injuries that could jeopardise what has been a fairly entertaining run with the Mid Atlantic Championship.

The second important bit of Super Showdown news on the rumour mill today is that due to choking out the champion during a tag team match at Wrestling Classic, Sandman Winks is going to receive a title match against Jaylon Martins for the Mid Atlantic American title. Winks, who has been used fairly consistently in the tag ranks over his first few years in MAW will surely be looking to put in a standout performance in what could be a breakout singles match for the man. Meanwhile his opponent, Martins, will be looking to silence some of the critics who believe he was not at all ready to hold a title in MAW, and are suggesting that the Total Championship Wrestling contracted talent are being handed opportunities in order for Sam Keith to remain amicable with BriCo.

Jumping off that point, and leaving what is the juiciest yet least likely to be true rumour for last. There are whispers and rumblings that management at MAW are looking to rebrand the Mid Atlantic American title. This news coincides with the increased involvement of Tamara McFly in the backstage dealings of MAW. The former Babes of Sin City and 5 Star Wrestling worker was apparently brought in to bring a new perspective and shake things up in MAW. This would surely be a massive change for the company and one that would come at some financial cost, although depending on the rebrand it could be a good move.

Enter Sandman

“It’s called a work Dave, you should look it up some time.”

“Is it really wise to go off on Twitter about the TCW guys quote, stealing all of our spots, end quote without telling them that what you’re doing is definitely just a work and there isn’t any animosity there?”

Henry “Sandman” Winks, looked back into the eyes of his tag team partner, and now roommate David Barker. The two had been going back and forth for weeks over Henry’s social media use and whether or not it was best to be spontaneous on the platform, or to talk things through with people to ensure they didn’t get the wrong idea. David fell on the side of caution, which was easy for him given his lack of any social media presence with the exception of an old Facebook account he used to keep in contact with his parents since moving from the family home. Henry however, was vehement in his opposition.

“What would you know about going off on Twitter, mister Myspace? Without me this team would have no online presence whatsoever!”

David scoffed and walked into the tiny kitchen of the pair’s tiny apartment. His large frame alone was cramped within its four, mildew-stained walls. “Do you want coffee while I’m making some man?” He asked.

“Hey! Wait a second!” Henry exclaimed, springing up from his seat. “Don’t dodge the question. What would you know about Twitter?”

David scoffed again and gently barged past the slightly larger man in the room and placed two cups of coffee down on their, admittedly reasonably sized table. “What I know is that nothing good ever comes from these little Twitter feuds. Eventually somebody is going to take things too far and then the feud will be real.”

Henry took a slow sip of his coffee and closed his eyes gently. He stayed like that for a few moments, finally letting out a long, slow breath before speaking again.

“David you’re an old-school guy, and I respect that...” Henry trailed off at the end of his sentence, but was forced to continue by his friend’s very pointed and inquisitive “but?”

“… But it’s the twenty-first century man. I wrestle old-school but I know there’s a new dimension to wrestling now. Did Rip Chord and Sam Strong have to tell each other privately that they weren’t really mad at each other?”

“Well, no. You could never have the biggest face and heel in a company talk to each other like that back in the day, it would be a disaster if they were seen to be friends outside the ring.”

Henry smiled, “Exactly, this is just the work for the modern day. Do you think we would have been on that Wrestling Classic card, in that tag team match, if I hadn’t gotten some buzz around a feud between Jaylon and I?”

David paused and sipped at his coffee. Henry could tell from the way he pulled his shoulders in that his roommate was trying to find a way out of admitting that they may not have been booked otherwise. Henry chugged back the rest of his coffee and stood up. He patted his partner on the shoulder as he walked past on the way to their front door.

“Anyway I’ve gotta go to work man, Mister Timmson isn’t going to train himself, or else I’d be out of a job. I’ll make sure not to piss off anybody on twitter while I’m gone.” He jibed.

Henry could hear some kind of threat from the other side of the door once he got into the hallway, knowing his roommate it probably involved Henry buying take out. But he shrugged and continued on his way to the gym, the door gave him enough plausible deniability to pretend he heard nothing.

A/N:This is brought to you courtesy of The Historian who chose Sandman Winks to receive a little character moment of his own, congratulations on winning the February prediction contest and best of luck to everybody on for March (Card to be posted in the coming days).

TopRopeElbow.com Report: New Mid Atlantic Wrestling Signings

Well folks it appears that a number of new signings are coming to MAW in March, both in and out of the ring. This comes as a result of Total Championship Wrestling’s annual class graduating from their dojo, with MAW confirming that they would be taking three of the men on developmental deals following their graduation.

Oz2mN8K.jpg

The first of which is Kyle Diamond a 6-foot 3-inch tall wonder from Connecticut is said to have impressed with his amazing grasp of fundamentals for a rookie, however at 23 he finds himself as the oldest graduate of the class and with something of an ego if sources from within the camp are to be believed, it will be interesting to see how he fits in amongst the humble MAW setting.

un5wyqT.jpg

The second graduate to report on is Marvin Gallagher. The young man from New Jersey is descendant from Vietnamese immigrants who came to America following the Vietnam War and finds himself in unique company joining the ever growing community of LGBT workers in the industry. The mountain of a man at 6-foot 10-inches and tipping the scales at over 300lbs seems to have all of the tools necessary to become a massive star in the industry, if looks are to be believed.

ja033tX.jpg

Last but not least from the graduates moving to MAW is Paris Burnett, a man who somehow manages to edge Marvin Gallagher in terms of size coming in at 6-foot 10-inches and weighting a whopping 328lbs. He appears to lack the impressive physique of the other graduates moving to MAW but the man who has been described as “a born heel” will surely find no end of success within the industry.

8hzxxbN.jpg

MAW have also signed a non-wrestler to a permanent contract, welcoming the young DeAnna Desire to their ranks. It is unclear at the moment what the young woman from Texas will be doing in MAW but apparently Sam Keith is quite high on her following a recommendation from none other than Mid Atlantic Champion Bradley Blaze. Could an on-screen relationship between the two be in the offing?

XWzjjdj.jpg

The final piece of news is that the company’s Twitter has confirmed that newly crowned Confederation of the Territories World Heavyweight Champion Ant-Man will be appearing at their Super Showdown event. The “Pintsize Powerhouse” won the title from former champion Pablo Rodriguez in a well-received match and he has already defended it once in OLLIE. The news behind this move is that the loan from ACPW was organised well in advance of the decision to have Ant-Man take the COTT title off Rodriguez. Does this mean he won’t be defending the title on the show? Perhaps, but only time will tell with the Super Showdown card being revealed tomorrow, for now all we can do is speculate.

MAW Super Showdown 2020 Card

Sat, Wk 4, Mar 2020

Opening Match

Singles Match

15-Minute Time Limit

Guillotine vs Local Talent

Easy pick here. Get the TCW contract over by beating someone quick and easy that doesn't matter.

Tag Team Match

15-Minute Time Limit

The Greatness vs The Heartbreak Express w/Lisa Bowen

The Greatness are heels and as much as I love the HBE, they'll eat the pin here so the Greatness can be ready to challenge for the tag titles.

Singles Match

15-Minute Time Limit

Miller Fforde vs Trix Triumph

Fforde is a big star -- the number two face in MAW and keeping him strong here will only help further his stories.

Tag Team Match

15-Minute Time Limit

Copperhead and Duke Freeman vs DeMarcus & Gray

A good win for the tag champs here in what looks like a non title match. Duke isn't very good at this stage of the game (though I love his potential upside) and Copperhead is well... He is what he is. DeMarcus and Gray are your premier babyface tag team. You've got The Wolf Pack, The Past Masters and the Greatness all getting strong to be challengers for them.

Singles Match

15-Minute Time Limit

Frankie-Boy Fernandes vs Jonah Pilgrim w/The Architect

FBF gets the win to set up a program against the Architect. Jonah is the lackey and the fodder.

Mid Atlantic American Championship Match

Singles Match

30-Minute Time Limit

Sandman Winks vs Jaylon Martins ©

I don't think you switch the belt yet. This is the match I feel least confident in. Sandman is still young and is in The Past Masters and looking like they could challenge for the tag straps. I'm not super high on Martins, but I think you keep the belt on him.

Main Event

Singles Match

30-Minute Time Limit

Ant-Man vs Josh Jacobs

This is really, really hard too. I don't feel like you'd bring in the COTT Champion to lose in a non-title match to Josh Jacobs -- so I think you have Ant-Man end up defending (if he's still the champion by show time) and have Miller Fforde distract double J to push their feud further.

Guillotine vs Local Talent

Yeah, no brainer here.

Tag Team Match

15-Minute Time Limit

The Greatness vs The Heartbreak Express w/Lisa Bowen

I like THB but you're needing heel challengers for the titles so The Greatness will win.

Singles Match

15-Minute Time Limit

Miller Fforde vs Trix Triumph

JJ will interfere but I still think Fforde will win.

Tag Team Match

15-Minute Time Limit

Copperhead and Duke Freeman vs DeMarcus & Gray

A non-title match is a fine time for the champs to lose but they won't lose here.

Singles Match

15-Minute Time Limit

Frankie-Boy Fernandes vs Jonah Pilgrim w/The Architect

Architect interference helps Pilgrim win and adds fuel to the baby face fire of FBF

Mid Atlantic American Championship Match

Singles Match

30-Minute Time Limit

Sandman Winks vs Jaylon Martins ©

Tough call but the TCW prospect has the belt a bit longer.

Main Event

Fforde returns the earlier interference favour by costing JJ the match here.

Ursula K. Le Guin once wrote “We're each of us alone, to be sure. What can you do but hold your hand out in the dark?” This was a philosophy which Jay Fair lived by. He ensured to always be kind, gentle, brave even in the face of adversity. He found himself becoming a locker room leader long before he was handed the book in Mid Atlantic Wrestling, and he always believed in part that he was put in charge of booking because he was well-liked rather than a good booker. Jay fed Sam Keith and Mean Jean plenty of ideas prior to Jean leaving in 2014, but he never changed the game. In a sense, Jay felt he was less of a booker and more of a page turner. Sure he put the shows together but most guys went above him to Sam when they had a question. Sam would always tell them “Go ask Jay, I don’t book the shows”. He respected Jay’s authority, but everybody knew he had the real final say on everything.

Tamara McFly was everything Jay wasn’t. She came from a wrestling family, she was a former wrestler and champion, she knew how to put a match together, she was well travelled, and she had connections in the industry. Jay knew he had to get her in to help with producing the shows and as much as she tried to present herself as a hard-ass, there was always a hint of a smile on her face when she thought nobody was looking.

Jay didn’t have fears of being usurped. He could hand over booking duties to Tamara or anybody Sam brought in without much fuss. He knew he would be refereeing for Sam Keith until the day they both keeled over. And until that day Jay swore to himself he was going to continue to hold his hand out in the dark. Every worker had his number, in case they ever needed him for anything. Marvin would occasionally call to ask about Susan. Some of the younger guys would ask him about potential indie bookings, the very young guys would warn him of impending deadlines and finals. Those circumstances in which one of America’s bright-eyed youths would be unable to successfully work a wrestling card. And of course Tamara McFly continued to text him at least a half-dozen times throughout the day. Storyline ideas, business ventures, marketing ploys. For a woman who insisted she wouldn’t show up at every show she managed to put in exactly as much work as Jay in putting them together.

Jay Fair. Happily married. Booking one of the most well-renowned companies on the American independent scene. Content with his lot in life.

A/N:Hey all this is just a little something I wanted to put together since I feel we haven't heard from Jay in a while. Anybody who is

yet to predict or wants to change their predictions will have until tomorrow evening my time (GMT) to get that in. Stay safe everybody and feedback is always appreciated either here or in PMs if you don't want to say it on the thread :D

Attendance: 156

Opening Match

Singles Match

• Guillotine dominated the local talent Mad Dog Mortimer from bell-to-bell.

• The match went slightly long and the crowd began to lose some interest in a simple squash running for over five minutes, however they did pop for Guillotine’s Sideswipe Knee finisher.

• Unfortunately Mortimer was just too old and broken down to make Guillotine look as good as he needed.

• In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, Guillotine defeated Mad Dog Mortimer in 5:59 by pinfall with a

Sideswipe Knee.

Lisa Bowen grabbed a microphone from ringside and got into the ring with her charges before their match. “Do you see these boys?” She began, gesturing to Johnny Needham and Ralph Liotta.

“They’re cute as a button and twice as tough and tonight one lucky lady in the audience is going to go home with their numbers.” She pauses for a brief holler from the crowd before continuing again. “My boys are the hottest act in Baltimore, and when they come away with the win here I’ll let you all know where we’re having the victory party!”

• This was a decent back-and-forth affair from two teams who have unfortunately found themselves lost in the shuffle since losing the tag titles.

• Lisa Bowen worked well at ringside and did a good job of engaging the crowd for her boys’ comeback, but her interactions with Ralph Liotta looked off, she seemed to overwhelm him slightly.

• The Express showed great fire throughout especially in when Johnny Needham made the tag to Liotta but his offence was cut off by Seth Whitehead, who locked in his Minnesota stretch while Harvey Robbinfield kept Needham on the outside of the ring.

• In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, The Greatness defeated The Heartbreak Express in 7:58 when Seth Whitehead submitted Johnny Needham with a Minnesota Stretch.

• Trix Triumph brought the fight to Miller Fforde in a heated match in which Fforde was constantly checking his back for Josh Jacobs.

• His lack of focus allowed Trix to take control several times throughout the match and looked in danger of losing once or twice.

• However despite his strong showing he couldn’t get the job done as Trix found himself on the receiving end of the Fforde Flip Face Crusher and the defeat.

• In a decent match, Miller Fforde defeated Trix Triumph in 7:59 by pinfall with a Fforde Flip Face Crusher.

A young woman came down to the ring in a purple dress. She ascended the ring steps with a microphone in hand and approached the winner of the match Miller Fforde. She beamed at him and rose the microphone to her lips. “Hello ladies and gentlemen my name is DeAnna Desire and from this point on I will be the ringside interviewer here in Mid Atlantic Wrestling. And my first order of business is to ask you, Miller Fforde, what your reaction is to what Josh Jacobs said last month at Wrestling Classic?”

Miller took the microphone form her hand to address the crowd. “My reaction? Josh is deluded. He’s taken one too many shots to the head and I guess losing his American title to a rookie from TCW just sent him over the edge. If he wants to claim to be the ‘heart and soul’ of the company he can have at it. Because actions speak louder than words and I prove to each and every one of you every night I’m out here that I do this for you.”

“So do you have anything to say to Josh Jacobs? Maybe we’ll get to hear from him before the main event tonight.”

“If you want a fight Josh, I’ll bring the fight.”

With that Miller handed the microphone back to DeAnna and headed for backstage, slapping high fives with every kid in the front row on the way.

• The duo of Copperhead and Duke Freeman showed their lack of experience in this match as they failed to cooperate the same way the current Mid Atlantic Tag Team Champions did.

• They did however show their tenacity in the match, with some hard brawling to strike back against the champs.

• Unfortunately it wouldn’t be enough as DeMarcus & Gray hit Freeman with the Rocket Launcher, which followed by a dive to the outside by Gray onto Copperhead was enough to earn the victory for the champions.

• In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, DeMarcus & Gray defeated Copperhead and Duke Freeman in 9:32 when Nate DeMarcus pinned Duke Freeman with a Rocket Launcher.

Sam Keith came out to the stage to announce that next month at Americana, Nate DeMarcus would be going one-on-one with Sean Noggin, and if Noggin wins, The Wolf Pack will receive a title match.

• The Architect stood at ringside during this match and made his presence known at every given opportunity, even going so far as to thrown Frankie-Boy into the ring steps while Jonah Pilgrim distracted the referee.

• Frakie-Boy fought back well with his patented high impact offence, hitting a handspring back elbow and a slingblade on Pilgrim.

• In the closing stretch of the match Frankie-Boy nailed The Architect with a baseball slide dropkick to the outside before hitting Pilgrim with his Dirt Nap finisher.

• In a decent match, Frankie-Boy Fernandes defeated Jonah Pilgrim in 11:37 by pinfall with a Dirt Nap.

After the match, before the bell has even finished ringing The Architect jumped Frankie-Boy Fernandes. He laid in rapid fire rights and lefts to the body and head of Frankie-Boy. Frankie-Boy tried valiantly to fight back but once Jonah Pilgrim got back to his feet he had no chance. The villainous pair threw him over the ringside barricade and battered him around the whole ringside area before slamming him into the ring steps and leaving him. Frankie-Boy lay motionless, as the doctor ran past The Architect and Pilgrim on the way to help Frankie-Boy.

On the way up the ramp the pair of The Architect and Pilgrim are met by Cheetah Boy who has a microphone in hand. “You’ve been avoiding me Arhchitect,” he began. “You won the Invitational, I commend you for that. But keep away from Bradley Blaze and my Mid Atlantic Championship. If you try to win it again. I will hurt you.” With that Cheetah Boy walked backwards away while The Architect and Pilgrim stood dumbfounded.

• This match saw a clash of two very different styles, as the high octane and explosive Jaylon Martins came up against the cerebral Sandman Winks.

• Martins started off the match hot, going straight for his opponent in an attempt to neutralise him as quickly as possible.

• Things did end up mirroring last month’s tag team match however, as as soon as Martins ran out of steam and Winks took control the result was a foregone conclusion as Martins found himself once again passing out in the Deep Sleep sleeper hold.

• In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, Sandman Winks defeated Jaylon Martins in 9:56 by submission with a Deep Sleep. Sandman Winks wins the Mid Atlantic American title.

• Josh Jacobs tried to turn this match into a technical masterclass, however the strength of the COTT World Champion Ant-Man allowed him to power out of many of Jacobs holds.

• Jacobs shifted to using stiff strikes to wear down Ant-Man who utilised an impressive array of throws and suplexes from the opening bell.

• Jacobs eventually showed his frustration by poking the eyes of Ant-Man to take control of the match.

• Things finally ended when Ant-Man early bumped into the referee, allowing Jacobs to roll him up and grab a handful of tights where the referee couldn’t see it to get the win.

• In a decent match, Josh Jacobs defeated Ant-Man in 20:17 by pinfall with a handful of tights.

After the match Jacobs attacked Ant-Man with a low blow and kicked him while he was down. Miller Fforde came sprinting down the ramp to aid the COTT World Champion and tackled Jacobs to the floor. The pair rolled out of the ring together and brawled to the back to bring the show to a close.

A/N:So that brings to a close the three MAW events run this side of the full release, gotta say I didn't think predictions would throw people the way they did but hey that's the joy of booking. So this month we had a four-way draw for first as Historian, Herrbear, lien02 and Sco xY2Jxall scored a 5/8 on the predictions, with Martel123 coming in at close second with 4/8. That means that for the first half 2020 Historian is still in the lead with 87.5% correct predictions and a three-way draw for second as Martel123, Herrbear and Sco xY2Jx all sit on 45.83% correct predictions. It's still all to play for in the 6-month race as one show could see somebody rocket up the prediction table.

As always feedback and criticism are appreciated when constructive, and I will be messaging this month's winners about their prize, one worker from the diary to receive some narrative attention! If you read this before I message you feel free to either drop your choice here or PM them to me!

My perfect streak is over! Though I think I got 6/8 right — because I think I only missed the final two matches (and I was torn! I really was)

Number 8 was the match of the night bonus prediction which you left blank. I only noticed when I was tallying up the predictions to make the post so I couldn't warn you about it I'm sorry

TopRopeElbow.com Quarterly Report: Q1 2020

Hello one and all, welcome to the TRE quarterly report where we wrap up all

the biggest happenings in professional wrestling for Q1 2020:

We’ll kick things off with USPW who have had a solid if slightly unspectacular start to the year. They have launched a new ‘B’ show USPW Future Legends which has featured the women’s division and young talent quite heavily. Shows have been consistently good, even if they have not been must watch television and the faith placed in the company’s women to main event these shows has been commendable. The next biggest piece of USPW news relates to new signing Hijo Del Águila Americana who signed with the company rather than renew his contract with EILL. Whether this was with the intention of pushing him up the card, or just a move to take a useful tool against the competition is yet to be seen. In championship terms, the tag team titles are being held by Kruser Karloff and Petr Novak, while the Women’s Championship is once again in the hands of Alicia Strong who now finds herself in her eighth reign with the belt. In a piece of sad news however, young star Sterling Whitlock has departed the company following the end of his contract, the young grappler was on the receiving end of 10 consecutive defeats this year, seemingly being jobbed out the door. It remains to be seen whether or not he will find work in another company soon.

SWF have had a relatively quiet first quarter, with their shocking move out the prime time slot on C.A.N.N being accompanied by the news they would be debuting a new ‘B’ show SWF Breakthrough TV which has featured solid tag team and 6-man tag team matches up until now. No move in or out of the roster, and the only title change has been the tag titles moving to The Awesomness.

Moving on to TCW who have seemingly had a quieter quarter than any of the other Big 3 members. Their yearly dojo class graduation has seen 3 wrestlers go to MAW and 3 stay on the main roster, while no other new signings have come in and no titles have changed hands. Marc Speed was allowed to leave at the end of his contract, the Detroit native found himself with a 3-7 record this year and his departure leaves questions surrounding his Eliminators partner Roderick Remus and how he will fair alone on the roster.

Up in Canada, CWA have also had a quiet year, however The Dynamite Express have now amassed a staggering 23 defences of the CWA tag titles in a reign that has spanned 414 days, that is an average of one defence every EIGHTEEN days!

In EILL the company has come to terms with OLLIE so as to send any potential prospects away for seasoning. No signings and apart from Hijo Del Águila Americana no departures either. One title change took place this quarter as the Mega Men team of El Mítico Jr. and Jagged who came together in January won the Campeonatos de Parejas EILL. Both events and TV have been consistently great as the company have gone from strength to strength this year.

In Japan, BHOTWG had an extremely busy first quarter as they announced 6 new signings, with 5 coming in the first week of January alone. Takayuki 2000 however has left the company in a move that has left many scratching their heads, as he was seen as the biggest star of the former GCG signings made following the company’s closure. MYSTIC Dragon has become the Junior Heavyweight champion, while new signings Eagle Kawasawa and Brute Kikuchi have teamed up to claim the World Tag Team championships.

On to COTT news, both current COTT titles changed hands this quarter as Pablo Rodriquez lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Ant-Man and the American Cobras fell to The Freedom Family of Tricolor Jr. and Luis Montero Jr. in a move which many are viewing as more bias towards keeping the titles in Mexico by OLLIE. There is however news that a handful of new titles will be introduced to the Confederation in Q2, including the heavily rumoured World Women’s Championship which has been expected following the additions of QAW and CILL to the Confederation.

Business as usual has been the mantra in RAW this quarter as no events of

note have taken place for the company.

In injury news, Panda Mask II has found himself on the shelf now for over a year due to a major concussion suffered in January soon after his high profile move to BHOTWG. Other high profile injuries with recovery times of up to a year include: Blake Belushi, Spencer Spade, Marvel Molloy, Lily Snyder, SUKI, and X-Calibre.

Finally the high profile retirements for this quarter include those of Insane Machine and Destiny.

The Letter

nY8vgU8.jpg

Dear Mom,

Hey, it’s been a while hasn’t it? Don’t worry I know how much you hate email, so I decided to write you a letter to let you know how I’ve been doing this year. I know we haven’t talked so much recently sorry, I’ve been real busy. Remember how I won my first title last year, and how happy it made me? Well, I kinda lost it. I know but Mr. Keith said they had a different direction for me, I’m better as a chasing challenger he said. Something like that anyway.

Things are so different in Baltimore. Everybody is really patriotic, but like, for a city you know? I saw this one guy walking down the street, and he was shirtless by he had these purple feathers glued to him. I walked past and he made just the loudest, weird bird nose and then said “Go Ravens”, as if we had just met at a game. There wasn’t even any football on that day, it was wild.

Mid Atlantic Wrestling is doing really well right now too, I wish you could come down to watch a show. There’s this new guy, Frankie, and he has Cali written all over him. In fact one a couple of the guys found him taking a nap backstage on day, it was a couple days before the show and he had just driven up to Baltimore. It’s like a week for him, he just drives and wrestles whatever indie show on the way. Honestly mom, guys like him make me insecure. I mean, I was trained and signed right onto a deal that he would have to work dozens of shows to make what I do in a month. And you know what mom? He bought me a beer! I know, I know I’m underage and stuff but hey it’s like dad said right? “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do, unless somebody is there to record it.”

I was thinking maybe I would come visit soon? I know Tish has been keeping things clean for you guys but it’s not fair on her to expect her to take care of these things forever. Honestly, I haven’t been to visit the grave since last year. I mean, I know you know that. I’m sure you two can see me from wherever you two ended up. Okay, I’m rambling again so I guess I’ll stop here, love you mom.

Your son,

Jaylon Martins.

Identity

un5wyqT.jpg

What is “identity”? One may ask themselves, “What is my identity?” One may even ask another, “What is your identity?” But rarely does somebody ask that all important question. Some believe identity is a matter of psychological continuity, some say it is about bodily continuity, and others are in agreement that a narrative approach to these high level questions. When one asks “What makes me who I am,” they are engaging with these concepts, even if they have not read the works of Ricoeur, Schechtman, or Parfit. Marvin Gallagher, 22 years old, son of Vietnamese immigrants to America, gay man, had to interrogate these ideas when, upon first meeting his new boss Sam Keith, before even a cursory introduction, Keith said to him, with no uncertainty in his voice “You need to change your name.” The key point of contention was his sharing a name with longstanding announcer Marvin Earnest, and he could not simply wrestle under his legal name. His parents had dubbed him Marvin Nguyen, believing that an anglicised name would provide him with greater job opportunities in adulthood, though they exclusively referred to him as Chien at home. This then, brings us to the moment upon which Marvin Gallagher, known as Marvin Nguyen to the United States Social Security Association, and known as Chien Nguyen to his parents, pitched his first character.

“So you want to be…?” Sam Keith began and trailed off following Marvin’s ambitious pitch.

“Ho Tinh, The Nine-Tailed Fox sir.” He replied.

Sam Keith paused for a moment and took in a breath. He crossed his arms and rested them on his deck before replying. “Aren’t they Japanese?”

“They are components of many East Asian mythologies, sir. But technically speaking they don’t originate in Japan. Historical sources suggest the stories begin in China and spread from there. Ho Tinh is the Vietnamese fox spirit, sir.”

“And how exactly do you plan on pulling that one off?”

Marvin sat at attention, and after every question he rattled off his prepared answers, he knew Sam Keith was fairly liberal but this idea was always going to receive pushback. “The Ho Tinh shapeshifts into humanoid form to seduce men, to consume their spirits, sir.”

“Why would you-“

“I’m gay, sir” Marvin interjected before Sam Keith could finish his sentence. “Since I can’t use my name I thought you would allow me to use my heritage to create this character, sir.”

Sam Keith paused again and looked Marvin up and down before answering. “So you want to play some kind of evil, humanoid, man-eating, seducer fox spirit?”

“Not evil, sir. I believe you’ll agree that gay-coding as a means of drawing heat, and if you’ll take it from somebody who is gay, it’s frankly offensive, sir. Also I have a friend who can make my ring gear I have a prototype mask and coat with nine tails I can wear to the ring.”

“But Fox Mask already exists Marvin.”

“With all due respect sir, Fox Mask retired a year ago, he doesn’t wear a mask anymore, I’m giving you a ready-made opportunity to sell a little extra merchandise, and I am trying to pay homage to the culture I grew up with sir, Mr. Murdoch just likes Foxes. Again, with all due respect I’m the only new recruit you’ve made go through this process and I had to do it on my own, if you don’t okay this both your time and mine will have been wasted.”

Sam Keith stood up and walked to the door of his office. He opened it and smiled at Marvin. “Okay,” He began, “You can try to pull this off, I’ll have Jay work with you on it. But if in six months I’m not happy with how the character is performing, I will pull you. Do I make myself clear?”

Marvin walked to Sam Keith and grabbed his hand to shake it “Yes sir, I won’t let you down.” He said before leaving the office to make a call. It was full steam ahead on Ho Tinh, The Nine-Tailed Fox.

Imagine if you will, a man. He stands at 6-feet tall. He weighs in at 205lbs. He is the last trainee of one of the most popular, respected and acclaimed wrestlers of all time. The man you have just pictured in your mind, regardless of appearance is Miller Fforde. A man so chronically underappreciated for what he has accomplished, due to the fact that people can only see him for what he has never been.

Miller Fforde never believed in glass ceilings. He believed that if you were good enough, if you put in the hard graft you could make it to the top. But in the days following his debut match, internet message boards were littered with comments decrying his existence in the wrestling world.

“Rip Chord retired for this?” They said.

“Well, we know Findlay isn’t losing the title to this guy,” they said.

“This guy is too skinny to be in there with the real men,” they said.

At the time still a teenager, the comments hurt. Miller almost quit wrestling after only his first match. It wasn’t until after a long phone call from Rip Chord himself, and several slices of his mother’s homemade cheesecake that Miller decided to get back in the ring. He put in the hard graft, for months he toiled away, becoming the most consistent performer on the roster, until finally he reached the top of the mountain. For 11 months Miller Fforde was The Guy in MAW, and fans loved him.

But, when he gets home after a show he remembers that he isn’t Rip Chord. That Rip Chord retired and the culmination of the legacy of Rip Chord rests on the shoulders of Miller Fforde. Sometimes he sits on the edge of the single bed, in his miniscule apartment and sheds a tear, to allow the feeling to overwhelm him. Sometimes he makes his own homemade cheesecake. To remind him of his mother back home. But each and every time he gets up the next morning and hits the gym twice as hard. To prove to himself that he will not waste the faith placed in him by one, Rip Chord.
