2010 Von Erich Cup Semi-Finals

Booker T vs. Lance Cade

Our first semi-final match-up came down to the uber-talented Booker T taking on "Lucious" Lance Cade. The latter came in heated, knowing the hill he would have to climb to overcome someone on the caliber of former WCCW World Heavyweight champion Booker T. His gas ran out mid-way through, however, and Booker T took over the match and controlled his destiny to secure his spot in the Finals match-up for the 2010 Von Erich Cup. With his eye on becoming World Heavyweight champion once again, can Booker T win twice in one night to achieve his goal?

Winner: Booker T via pinfall, Book End

Match Rating: 4.25 stars

Booker T +1% overness, +10 popularity (891), Lance Cade, -9 popularity (648)

2010 Von Erich Cup Semi-Finals

Cody Rhodes vs. Kip Winchester

The second semi-final started off even hotter than the first, as the fans rallied behind Cody Rhodes as soon as he came out on stage. He looked determined, while Winchester looked incredibly displeased by the fans reactions in the ring. He laid the pulp on Cody for the first portion of the match, as Cody fought back in a traditional babyface comeback, nearly succumbing to the disposition of Kip Winchester and instead countering to seal the deal with a Cross Rhodes manuever. With the fans elated, is Cody destined to walk out of the Von Erich Cup the man with the title shot at WCCW WrestleWar?

Winner: Cody Rhodes via pinfall, Cross Rhodes

Match Rating: 3.5 stars

Cody Rhodes +1.5% overness, +21 popularity (901), Kip Winchester -1% overness, -10 popularity (756)

WCCW World Tag Team

The Brew Crew © vs. Tex-Mex All-Stars

Before the finals, however, we would see The Brew Crew of James Storm and Trevor Murdoch successfully defend their tag belts against the Tex-Mex All-Stars. Another win over the team of El Hijo del Santo and Mr. Texas, and one could say The Brew Crew has effectively dominated the WCCW tag team division. Although the All-Stars looked servicable, they just couldn't overcome the rough-and-tough fighting style we have come accustomed to seeing The Brew Crew use in their matches, generally holding no regard for opponents and breaking all of the unwritten rules.

Winner: The Brew Crew via pinfall, Gory bomb - cutter combination

Match Rating: 4 stars

The Brew Crew +2.5% overness, +12 popularity (712), Tex-Mex All-Stars -1.5% overness, -8 popularity (714)

Singles Match

Bob Holly vs. Dustin Rhodes

The older brother of one-half of the Von Erich cup finalists, taking on the tag team partner of the man beaten in that semi-final match, led to a solid brawl between two men whom have seen quite a bit of each other over the years. But perhaps the fans weren't supposed to take away much of anything between these two just yet, rather focusing on the interference at the end of the match by Kip Winchester. Nailing Dustin over the head with a chair when the referee was distracted, Holly took his tag partner's help and was able to wrap up this one to secure the victory. Was this revenge for his younger brothers win over Kip in tonight’s tournament?

Winner: Bob Holly via interference, Kip Winchester chairshot

Match Rating: 3.5 stars

Bob Holly +1% overness, +22 popularity (913), Dustin Rhodes -4 popularity (827)

2010 Von Erich Cup Finals

Booker T vs. Cody Rhodes

Finally, our sixteen-man tournament that begins years on WCCW Monday Night Ignition every January has boiled down to our finalists for the 2010 edition: Booker T and Cody Rhodes. Both fighting for the prestigious Von Erich Cup and a coveted world title shot at WCCW WrestleWar in March! The fans were all over this one with the crowd solidly getting behind the younger Rhodes. Despite his controversial beginnings in WCCW as the son of owner Dusty Rhodes, Cody continues to do what he can to prove himself to the WCCW faithful and this match against Booker T was another one to certainly help his case. Most everyone considered this to be match of the night, but all-in-all, after plenty of false finishes, the stars just wouldn't align for the 25-year old, as the more experienced, yet aging, Booker T was able to carve out the win. Celebrating after the match to the crowd's demise, yet respect for the veteran's capabilities, it became clear this may be Booker T's last chance at the WCCW World Heavyweight title, a last dance, so to say.

Winner: Booker T via pinfall, Book End

Match Rating: 5 stars

Booker T +2% overness, +22 popularity (913), Cody Rhodes -1% overness, -14 popularity (887)

Texas Street Fight

"Texas Red" Mean Mark Callous vs. "Superstar" Steve Austin

The semi-main event for the 2010 Von Erich Cup came down to a Texas favorite, a good ole' street fight between two WCCW legends, and two men whom have despised each other almost the entirety of their long, prestigious careers. Callous and Austin have somehow always been a the ying to one's yang, colliding over company-engulfing storylines, or meeting together out of their own choice, like in tonight's case. Another grudge developed between the two superstars which Austin was quick to try to settle, "I'll beat your ass, any day, any time, any where, just like I always have you stupid son-of-a-bitch!". So when these two came together, sparks flew as fists were flying left-and-right. A wonderful display to appeal to both sides of the audience, half which are die-hard Texas Red fans, the other half loyal to Steve Austin whether he is with you or against you, these two didn't hold back. But all said and done, Callous was able to wrap up this fight with a tombstone piledriver on the concrete floor, sending Austin packing for the night and Texas Red struggling to make his way to the back. Will this be the last we see of these two going at it for awhile? Likely not knowing how stubborn “Stunning” Steve Austin is, and always will be...

Winner: Mean Mark Callous via pinfall, Tombstone Piledriver

Match Rating: 4.5 stars

Mean Mark Callous +2% overness, +21 popularity (997), Steve Austin -7% overness, -14 popularity (991)

WCCW World Heavyweight

"The Great One" Rocky Johnson Jr. © vs. "The Sinister One" Sean O'Haire

Even after two excellent matches the crowd, which seemed dead before both men had gotten to the ring, were re-ignited by the entrance of Rocky Johnson Jr., perhaps the greatest wrestler in WCCW history. He put his world title on the line once again against Sean O'Haire, the next title challenger determined to get his hands on the belt. Just how far O'Haire will go remains to be seen, but tonight he didn't go far enough as Rocky was able to get the people behind him once again and overcome all the challenges O'Haire would put in his way. An excellent display in both wrestling and showmanship, O'Haire nearly sealed the deal after a devastating powerbomb that seemed to dismantle the world champion, but after kicking out at the very last milli-second, Rocky was able to charge back up with a wonderful comeback, tacking on another impressive title defense with the classic Rock Bottom right in the middle of the ring. The fans erupted and celebrated with their champion, as O'Haire laid battered and bruised with a wicked look in his eye...

Winner: Rocky Johnson Jr. via pinfall, Rock Bottom

Match Rating: 4.75 stars

Rocky Johnson Jr. +5% overness, +8 popularity (1013), Sean O'Haire +5% overness, +11 popularity (997)

Other News

WCCW confirmed the call-up of The New Blackjacks: Taylor and Windham Rotunda. Son of wrestler Mike Rotunda, these two have been touted as dynamite future workers for the company, and will join a WCCW tag division that has seemed a bit stale as of late. In developmental, the Rotuna brothers really honed their skills and seem primed and ready to compete on the main roster. Only time will tell how long it will take before they get their hands on tag title gold.

The company has been recruiting former AWA and TWE star Scott Steiner to join their roster as a high-level contender. Steiner is reportedly in talks with the company but inside sources say he is not convinced WCCW is the appropriate next step for his career.

WCCW officials have also been in talks with Japanese star Minoru Suzuki. Tough to say if this will lead to anything, as some sources have indicated Suzuki is interested in "having a go" in the American wrestling scene while others say that is 100% false and he has zero interest in exporting his talents.

The camera crew and others tried to chase him down but the masked man was able to escape into the night…</p><p> </p><p> ...This all before a tag team main event where <strong>Rocky Johnson Jr.</strong> and his partner for the night, <strong>Steve Austin</strong>, rallied back to defeat the evenly matched team of <strong>Mean Mark Callous</strong> and <strong>Sean O’Haire</strong>. Suspiciously the timing of O’Haire’s appearance was made to seem like perhaps he wasn’t the attacker after all, despite the build and mannerisms matching that of “The Sinister One”. The two teams battled it out all month, highlighted by The Gatekeepers beating the brothers in a tag match after Kip nailed Cody over the head with a chair shot while the referee was distracted with a feisty brawl between Dustin and Bob Holly, as well as an episode of Ignition which kicked off with a brutal two-on-one attack by the Gatekeepers on Cody, which led to a handicap match featuring Dustin fighting off the team of Holly and Kip, much to the crowd’s avail. Gordy did not look very confident in himself, after kicking himself for losing so unexpectedly to Cade earlier in the month. It was obvious that match left a lasting impression on Gordy, but his New Freebird stablemates tried to rally behind their leader, joining his corner for the match. But perhaps their presence wasn’t the best idea, as they gave Cade a chance to get the upper hand on Gordy while they tried to explain to the referee that the narcissist was planning to use a pair of brass knuckles on Gordy! The more exposure they got on Monday Night Ignition, the more the fans began getting behind the new tag team. Taylor brought a classic in-ring style that reminded fans of some of their favorites they grew up with in the late 1980’s, reminded some of a bit of a Kevin Von Erich approach to his wrestling, while Windham was really turning heads with some of his offensive deliveries in the ring, sporting excellent agility for a man of his size. Together, the two bring an interesting flavor to tag team wrestling the WCCW universe hasn’t seen in awhile. For the Brew Crew, however, they were hardly impressed, instead mocking The New Blackjacks leading up to their title match and during much of it. And despite how much the fans may have been hoping their new babyface tag team would take the belts, it would not happen tonight as the Brew Crew toughened out the latter-half of the match and were able to put Taylor Windham away with their gory bomb - cutter combination.</p><p> <strong>Winner:</strong> The Brew Crew <em>via pinfall, Gory bomb - cutter combination</em></p><p> <strong>Match Rating:</strong> 3 stars</p><p> <strong>The Brew Crew </strong><strong><span style="color:#FF8C00;">+2.5%</span></strong><strong> overness, +7 popularity</strong> (719)<strong>, The New Blackjacks -4 popularity</strong> (632)</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <img alt="PGkQ4J7.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/PGkQ4J7.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><strong>VS.</strong> <img alt="HFDsYpW.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/HFDsYpW.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> <strong><span style="font-size:14px;">WCCW Texas Heritage</span></strong></p><p> <strong>Minoru Suzuki ©</strong> vs. <em>“Wildcat"</em> <strong>Chris Harris</strong></p><p> After shocking the wrestling world by not only debuting on Monday Night Ignition, but also taking the Texas Heritage title off the hands of “Wildcat” Chris Harris in his first singles match in WCCW history, Japanese legend Minoru Suzuki walked into his first American pay-per-view looking extremely focused, taunting the American crowd both on his way to and in the ring. WCCW fans rallied behind the babyface in Chris Harris, a true WCCW homegrown that was looking to break into the main event. Now, a sadistic challenger in Suzuki stood in his way. Harris put up a decent fight to start, but soon broke down when Suzuki began really applying skilled counters and strangling holds. Although blood related, sometimes that never translates into success in the ring, and tonight was not a good night for the Rhodes brothers. Although some fans might tell you to shove it, and to embrace the fact that two legends are facing off in another singles classic... this time it was one we have never seen these two in: a handcuffs on a pole match. Once again these two laid out the punishment, although this time instead of fighting mostly outside of the ring like last month, these two kept it mainly contained to the squared circle. But of course, things would lead to the final moments which led Austin and Callous beating the living hell out of each other near the pole placed next to the announcer’s table, which held a pair of handcuffs dangling from the top. Despite his best efforts, Austin wasn’t able to prevent Mean Mark from securing them from the pole… But when he tried to get Austin wrapped up in the constraints, Austin was able to get Callous in a wrestling match on the floor, scrapping and clawing to get ahold of the coveted handcuffs! Once he could Austin got Callous in a lucky position and quickly clicked the cuffs together! The bell rang and Austin met a split reaction from the fans as he had Callous at his whim. Of course, the action wasn’t over just with the bell, as Austin walked Callous around the outside, dishing out whatever kind of pain he pleased.</p><p> <strong>Winner:</strong> Steve Austin <em>via handcuffing</em></p><p> <strong>Match Rating:</strong> 5 stars</p><p> <strong>Steve Austin </strong><strong><span style="color:#FF8C00;">+3%</span></strong><strong> overness, +13 popularity</strong> (1011)<strong>, Mean Mark Callous </strong><strong><span style="color:#4169E1;">-2%</span></strong><strong> overness, -9 popularity</strong> (997)</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <img alt="M7yCR2D.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/M7yCR2D.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><strong>VS.</strong> <img alt="O79Dylq.png" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/O79Dylq.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> <strong><span style="font-size:14px;">WCCW World Heavyweight - Cage Match</span></strong></p><p> <em>"The Great One"</em> <strong>Rocky Johnson Jr. ©</strong> vs. <em>"The Sinister One"</em> <strong>Sean O'Haire</strong></p><p> After a crazy month in which “The Sinister One”, Sean O’Haire, focused on increasing his dastardly mechanisms of torturing the WCCW World Heavyweight champion, Rocky Johnson Jr. perhaps gave in to O’Haire’s plan… granting him another world title shot… but this time on Rocky’s terms. “The Great One” would accept a re-match under one condition: he could get O’Haire one-on-one in a steel cage. After nearly killing Rocky by blowing up his limo on the final edition of Ignition before their meeting, it was clear Rocky came into this one fired up and ready to serve O’Haire what he had coming to him. But it would be a tough battle for the champ, falling behind several times to either cowardly antics from “The Sinister One”, or getting out worked inside of the cage. The highlights of the match would come towards the end, when O’Haire, who had just finished a five minutes momentum swing in his favor, passed up exiting the ring over the top of the cage to shock the crowd with a spectacular Swanton Bomb off the top of the cage! Face or heel; good or bad; it didn’t matter in that moment, as everyone erupted in cheers after O’Haire only got the two count. Following that sequence, our announcers questioned the motivations of Sean O’Haire. Was he really in it for the gold, or was he in it for something more? Was his primary motivation instead to relinquish “The Great One”? Prop himself up over the legend that is Rocky Johnson Jr. and make sure the fans walked away talking about “The Sinister One” and not the world champion? Only time will tell the answer to that question, for tonight was instead capped off by Rocky escaping the cage victory following a vicious Rock Bottom from the top turnbuckle. He would celebrate with the fans once again, but having nearly lost this bout, are the sands of time running out on Rocky in what could be his final title run?</p><p> <strong>Winner:</strong> Rocky Johnson Jr. <em>via escaping the cage</em></p><p> <strong>Match Rating:</strong> 5 stars</p><p> <strong>Rocky Johnson Jr. </strong><strong><span style="color:#FF8C00;">+5%</span></strong><strong> overness, +8 popularity</strong> (1026)<strong>, Sean O'Haire </strong><strong><span style="color:#FF8C00;">+10%</span></strong><strong> overness, +10 popularity</strong> (1015)</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="51868" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">Other News</span></strong><p> </p><p> Minoru Suzuki's move over to WCCW caused quite a commotion in the wrestling industry. The Japanese wrestling pioneer has reportedly had his interest peaked in performing a run in the America's since early last year as his contract was running out with New Japan Pro Wrestling. Sources say he was most interested in signing with WCCW, so when the opportunity arose he jumped on it quickly and was able to piggy-back off some travel plans he already had in place. His debut at Ignition was underwhelming but everyone is happy with his progression so far into the Texas Heritage champion. Dusty Rhodes is said to be supremely satisfied with Suzuki so far and thinks he is the perfect villian for the WCCW audience. Combined with suprerior wrestling ability to most of the roster, the only thing holding him back will likely be his lack of English-speaking abilities.</p><p> </p><p> Scott Steiner is said to have backed off from talks with WCCW, apparently unsatisfied with the company's offer and lack of guarantee to thrust Steiner right into the main event. Working in WCCW's developmental, Neikirk is said to be unhappy with the call up of the New Blackjacks over himself, who has been in developmental for the past three years.
