KCW- A new, friendly company

Recommended Posts

Alright guys, I have come to the conclusion that while it is good to take over an established company, in order to get the best out of this game, I think I need to start my own company. That way I can really do the things I want to do, hire who I want, etc. Not that I can't do that with any other company, but this way it's a brand new company that I can start from the ground up. Here's the back story I'm using for the company, called Kansas Championship Wrestling:

Kansas Championship Wrestling was opened up in 1993 by a mysterious group of investors who wished to remain nameless and out of the spotlight. They were concerned because pro wrestling in Kansas was not getting much coverage like it used to, and they invested $5,000,000 to start the company. The basis of the company would be that every single show would be held somewhere in Kansas, and that KCW had no intentions of competing with any other company. Rather, they wanted to get friendly with as many companies as possible to borrow workers because the investors wanted lots of tournaments and special events.

The secret investors have decided to hire someone to run the every day operations and to be the booker. That person will also remain a mystery (gotta keep some suspense going to keep readers involved). The first task is to develop a roster. The investors have decided that the initial roster (wrestlers, announcers, etc) MUST come from the unemployment pool, which could make things very, very interesting.

Look for a roster reveal over the next couple days. I know I have had several requests to add pictures to my dynasty. I'm considering only having pictures for my PPVs and special shows. What do you guys think about the whole picture thing? Let me know.

I'm also wanting to do a prediction contest. My plan is if I have enough people predicting my shows (predicting 1 show a month) is to have a team challenge, taking the top 6 or 8 predictors and letting them put together a 4 man team.

Aside from that, I also plan on having a King of the Ring type tournament, a Young Lions Tournament, Lethal Lottery/Battlebowl, and a Crockett Cup tag team type tournament. At this time there will not be a specified cruiserweight or women's division, but that could change.

Thoughts? Comments? Let me know. This will probably be a slow moving dynasty. At best I will probably run 2 shows a week, and that could be false hope.

I gotta tell ya, it was tough going through the unemployment market to get enough quality guys for the initial roster. At the same time, there were quite a few guys that I was shocked to find that weren't working at the moment. I definitely think I got some steals. We'll be starting with 28 active wrestlers, plus 1 that is on the injured list right now. I've also got a couple quality referees, 3 quality road agents, and a..... decent announce team. To say that I'm not so happy with the quality of the announce team would be an understatement. I'll reveal the non-wrestlers at a later date.

There are 2 major problems right now. About half my active roster is mildly negative influence backstage. I'm not so worried about that right now, but I'm definitely looking to change that. The more pressing issue is that I don't have very many guys that can play the babyface role. Out of the 28 active wrestlers, only about 10 are good at playing the babyface role. However, if you caught what I said, only the initial roster came from the unemployment market. Now that I've got it, I'll be scouring other feds to try to sign guys to handshake deals. I have shortlisted several promotions that I'd like to take guys from, specifically once their contract is close to ending.

Now from the business side of things, being a new, insignificant company has caused 2 major issues. First, no other company is willing to join our alliance. This is critical because when I do special events, I'm hoping to take champions from these other companies to participate. Specifically something I like to call World Cup of Wrestling (very similar to TNA's World X-Cup), as well as Young Lions Tournament and a Tag Team tournament that is yet to be named. Hopefully once we increase in size, I'll at least be able to get talent trade deals with some companies.

The biggest issue is no television. Not one broadcaster will do business with us right now, not even the broadcasters like YouTube (did they even have YouTube back in 1993 *shrugs*). So.. for now, all our events will be live events that will be taped and put on DVD (or VHS, I'm definitely showing my age, I can't even remember what the heck we had in 1993). So my announcing team should at least get some practice before we get on tv, whenever that is.

Because of this, I'm going to bi-weekly events. They will be included in the prediction contest, since it's unlikely I'll be having tv with a big event at the end of the month anytime soon. So instead of 1 event a month to predict, you'll have 2 for this prediction contest, which will run February-June.

One more thing, graphics. At this time, I'm not going to include graphics, simply because my roster is not finalized. With so many negative influences on the roster, I'm expecting some backstage incidents and some roster turnover. Not to mention, I'm still trying to find a good way to do graphics. I used to use photobucket but it doesn't seem to work so well now. However it has been a while since I've tried it, so maybe I'll try it again.

For right now, we will have 3 titles. All 28 active members of the roster have been entered into a tournament. Those tournaments will take place over the next few live shows. The titles KCW will start with are:

National Openweight Title (this will be the premier title of KCW)

Kansas Openweight Title (this would be equivalent to the IC title, or TV title even)

KCW Tag Team Titles (because you gotta have tag team wrestling)

There will be 8 participants in each of the National Openweight and Kansas Openweight Title Tournaments. 2 groups of 4, round robin, everyone wrestles 3 matches. Top 2 advance to semifinals. Group A winner faces Group B runner up, Group B winner faces Group A runner-up. Let's take a look at the participants in those tournaments.

National Openweight Tournament

Group A

Samoan Savage

Norman the Lunatic

Butch Reed

Devon Hughes (aka D-Von Dudley)

Group B

Sam Houston

Sid Vicious

Jacques Rougeau

Billy Gunn

Is it a given that Butch Reed vs. Sid Vicious will be the National Openweight Tournament final? Who knows.

Kansas Openweight Tournament

Group A

Bobby Walker

Alex Wright

Glenn Jacobs (Kane)

Big Vito

Group B

Marty Jannetty

Scotty Riggs

Chris Kanyon

Tim Storm

As you can see, this has more of a Television Title tournament feel. However, in an insignificant company, any of these guys can end up being major stars.

Now we move to the KCW Tag Team Tournament. My hope was to have 8 tag teams for it. I just couldn't come up with 2 more. I already had to makeshift 3 of the 6 teams. This tournament will also be round robin. Only difference is each team will only get 2 matches before bracket play. It'll still be top 2 advancing. The bottom team in each group will also face each other at a later date.

KCW Tag Team Title Tournament

Group A

The New York Connection (Glenn Gilberti and Johnny Swinger)

The Holly Cousins (Bob and Crash Holly)

Ice Train and Tony Norris (aka Ahmed Johnson)

Group B

Matt Hardy and Shane Helms

Public Enemy

Kid Kash and Paul Roma

This tournament feels much more wide open. Keep in mind this mod is from 1993, so guys like Matt Hardy, Shane Helms, Tony Norris haven't hit their peak yet. So it'll be very interesting to see how it plays out.

I like my initial roster, I like the tournaments, and I'm excited to get going.

I will be running the initial KCW show on Monday or Tuesday (hopefully Monday, depending on how predictions go)

Each show will have 6 matches for right now, at least through pool play. Here's a look at the line-up for the first show:

Also, as always feel free to pick the finalists and winner of each of the tournaments. 2 points each per finalist, 6 points for the winner. You can rack up some major points right off the bat. I'll give it a couple days, see if I get some predictions, then go from there.

If anybody wants to predict, do so now because there is a good chance I run this show TONIGHT. Or maybe I just scrap prediction contests for a while.

I have definitely come to the conclusion that I have a hard time making my mind up on what to do and then sticking with it. I'm hoping I can make this one last a little while.

KCW Live

Monday, Week 1, Mar. 1993

Budig Hall - Lawrence, KS

Show Attendance: 47

We kicked this show off with a Kansas Openweight Title Tournament Group B match between Chris Kanyon and Tim Storm. This is yet another match in which both participants showed lots of inexperience, a match better suited for a preshow. Storm wore down, allowing Kanyon to take advantage and get the win. The biggest pop came when the 3 count was made, and the fans realized the match was over.

Winner: Chris Kanyon (13)

A National Openweight Title Tournament Group B match was next, featuring Sam Houston taking on Jacques Rougeau. Many people remember Rougeau as the Mountie in his WWF (back at the time it was WWF) days, but he is an outstanding wrestler, and he put on a top notch performance here tonight. Unfortunately, he and Houston just don't click in the wrong so parts of the match were awkward. Despite that, Rougeau did what he needed to do to come out on top.

Winner: Jacques Rougeau (47)

Matt Hardy and Shane Helms came to the ring next, saying they were happy to be a part of such a great upstart company, and while they would prefer to be back in North Carolina, Kansas ain't all that bad. They said if they were going to be a regular tag team, it was only fitting they had a name, and Hardy said he came up with the perfect name... Catastrophe. Helms went on to say the name fit those 2 because of all the dangerous, high flying moves they were known for. Having heard enough, the self proclaimed voice of KCW, Mike Adamle, got in the ring and said these 2 kids being in a professional wrestling ring was a catastrophe. More like a disgrace to the sport. He questioned whether Helms or Hardy were even old enough to drive. Naturally this didn't go over well with the fans, who continued to tell Adamle how bad he sucked. (38)

Moving back to the Kansas Openweight Title Tournament, another Group B match between Marty Jannetty and Scotty Riggs. I was really worried about this match after Jannetty was sent home the week before, but he came to the ring and performed beautifully, putting on a show. If he can stay sober, he has a very bright future in this company.

Winner: Marty Jannetty (41)

We move to the KCW Tag Team Title Tournament, a Group B match between The American Patriots and the team of Kid Kash and Paul Roma. I was excited to see how these 2 throw together teams would work, and they didn't disappoint. With 1 member of each team having much less experience than the others, Roma and Kazmaier spent most of the match in the ring. However, neither Roma or Kash had an answer for Kazmaiers strength, and a flying shoulder block from Kazmaier to Kash was the difference.

Winners: The American Patriots (41)

Time for another National Openweight Title Tournament match, a Group B match between Tom Zenk and Billy Gunn. I was always a fan of Zenk, even though he never really hit it big. Gunn has a lot of potential and it showed tonight. Unlike Houston and Rougeau earlier, these 2 had great chemistry in the ring together. Once again it came down to experience. Zenk has it, Gunn doesn't yet.

Winner: Tom Zenk (38)

Time for the main event, a Group B match in the KCW Tag Team Title Tournament between The Skyscrapers and Ice Train and Tony Norris. First and foremost, Norris was hugely disappointing, really off his game tonight. I could tell that Vicious and Spivey with both frustrated and this is something that will have to be addressed as I have high hopes for Norris. On this night though, there was no beating the Skyscrapers. They ended the show in dominant fashion with a double power bomb to Ice Train. The only question is, will I have the Skyscrapers for the rest of the tournament or will I be losing big Sid.

Winners: The Skyscrapers (46)

Final Show Rating: 45

The show increased popularity in 1 region.

Weekly News and Notes

-- It looks like WCW is going to pick on KCW every chance they get, as Marty Jannetty has signed an exclusive deal with WCW. That makes both him and Sid Vicious that are expected to leave within the next 30 days. How will the KCW brass handle their spots in their respective tournaments? Only time will tell.

-- The KCW brass are taking it in stride and have already made several new hires that will be debuting sometime this month. No names have been revealed yet, but we understand that one of the hires is a very popular, experienced tag team that will really excite the fans.

-- 2 companies are making headlines right now, but in the wrong way. First we start with Pro Wrestling America. After a disagreement with legend Terry Funk over money and paying on time, Funk no-showed a PWA event this week and walked out on the company. Definitely not the way you want to treat a legend in the business.

-- While being the top company in the United States, the World Wrestling Federation is definitely not making any friends right now. In the past week alone, 3 companies have cut ties with the WWF and look to be ready to go to war with them. 2 of the companies, Smoky Mountain Wrestling and the United States Wrestling Association, have had working agreements with the WWF for some time now. Things could get very interesting here.

KCW Live

Monday, Week 2, Mar. 1993

Budig Hall - Lawrence, KS

Show Attendance: 60

The show kicks off with a KCW Tag Title Tournament Group A Match between The Holly Cousins and The Public Enemy. The Hollys had some bad luck in this one, as Crash Holly was off his game, and Bob Holly appeared to suffer a neck injury. Despite that, they were able to prevail and get the win, staying alive in the tournament!

Winners: The Holly Cousins (18)

Next up was a Kansas Openweight Title Tournament Group A match between Alex Wright and Big Vito. Once again, inexperience hampered the match, but Vito took control and took care of business against the smaller Wright, getting his first victory.

Winner: Big Vito (16)

We stay in the Kansas Openweight Title Group A, this match featuring Bobby Walker and Glenn Jacobs. Another David vs. Goliath match, so to speak. This time though, it was the smaller man that used his speed and agility to get a surprise victory!

Winner: Bobby Walker (20)

Back to the KCW Tag Team Title Tournament, a Group A match between The New York Connection and Catastrophe. This was a big match, as whoever won the match would also win Group A, based on the next set of matches. Both teams added a little extra to their performance knowing this, but it was the trickery of Swinger and Gilbertti that put them on top and got them a big win.

Winners: The New York Connection (20)

As we come back from intermission, we hear a "what the hell?!" from Mike Adamle. That's because The Rock 'N' Roll Express are in the ring! Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson thanked the fans for the nice welcome, saying it had been a long time since they had performed in front of a crowd this small, but that the small crowds tended to be more passionate. They regretted that they didn't sign in time to be involved in the KCW Tag Tournament, but they were issuing a challenge to whoever came out on top, they wanted first crack at the champs.

Adamle had heard more than he cared to hear, asking Morton and Gibson what they were doing here, and telling them they were washed up and not welcome. He said KCW was becoming a circus act already, with a tag team that was barely old enough to drive, and another tag team that was trying to relive their prime and hadn't been relevant in years. He wanted to know who was in charge of the company, because it was getting out of control. Clearly the fans disagreed, booing Adamle unmercifully as they've done week after week. (52)

Next we move to the National Openweight Title Tournament, Group A matches. The first featuring Norman the Lunatic against Devon Hughes. While Norman was off his game, the experience factor came into play. And let's be honest, Norman.. well he's a little bit off anyways. His unpredictability was enough to get him a much needed win in this match.

Winner: Norman the Lunatic (27)

The main event would see The Samoan Savage taking on Butch Reed in a National Openweight Title Tournament Group A match. A great match, one of the best in KCW so far. These 2 brutes really battled and proved why they could be the foundation of KCW. Unfortunately stamina took its toll on Reed, and the surprises kept on coming as the Samoan Savage pulled it off with a Samoan Splash to end the show!

Winner: The Samoan Savage (50)

Final Show Rating: 43

  • 4 weeks later...

Just wanted to update everyone on why there hasn't been any action in this dynasty for a while. In short, I've been dealing with an illness. Yes, sadly I tested positive for the Rona a few weeks ago. Mild symptoms, but symptoms that just wouldn't go away. Fortunately I'm expected to make a full recovery.

I'm on the mend and seriously considering what to do. I doubt I resume this project. It just wasn't going the way I wanted. Everything I want to do is already being done (current AEW, NXT, NWA) and anything WCW. So I need to weigh my options. I'd like to start with a fairly big company, whatever I do. I want to do things like Battlebowl/Lethal Lottery, Young Lions Tournament, KOTR. Restarting with NXT but NOT doing the ranking system like i was doing seems to be my strongest bet. Or maybe I'll try AEW. I'm open to ideas.

Oh shit, good to hear you're slowly recovering.

And stick with this diary. There is no point in starting a new diary that you would probably give up soon anyway.

I'm glad to see you have so much faith in me that you think I would start a new dynasty and give up quickly. My reputation precedes me lol. I do have a bad habit of starting over quickly.

I literally just found this diary today and would honestly love to see you stick with it if you can. I love seeing small company saves and historical saves from quite a while ago. I was really excited to see this diary (and company) grow and become bigger.

Hope you're feeling better by the way.
