SWF Uprising Results [Fri. Wk. 2, Jan 2020]

Gf1mgKs.jpg

From the diary of Samantha W. Fitzworthy

Following the brand split announced at When Hell Freezes Over, this was the first “branded” episode of Uprising so I was as curious as any viewer to see what that meant for the show. 4.036.496 viewers reportedly watched it live on NetStream from the sold-out 5.000 seat Laurent Ballroom in Vermont.

The show kicked off with a Rogue promo, already feeling different as it wasn’t another case of Rocky Golden starting things off to whatever end. Rogue tried to make excuses for his Pay Per View loss, saying he got distracted trying to pin Valiant so that he turned his back on Remo and paid for it. This brought out his former tag team partner alongside Hannah, both getting a good reaction from the sold out crowd. Valiant did just what the fans wanted him to do, which was expose Rogue for being a coward. As the All-American hero he is, Valiant said he too lost that match and could be blaming Rogue for going after him with such reckless intent, but he didn’t, calling Rogue a sore loser. This had Rogue launch a sudden attack but Valiant was ready for it and dodged, throwing Rogue out of the ring and forcing him to a retreat while Mr. Eisen enthusiastically told me to write down an 87 for the opening segment.

WDNhedH.jpgpTVhqwK.jpg

We then went backstage for a quick hype angle, as Kristen Pearce hyped up her client, the big man Avalanche. I’m not saying he doesn’t have the size and looks, but I wasn’t impressed when he’s on a roster with the likes of Primus Allen and Remo. Plus I think Kristen is too good to be wasted on such a raw prospect. Still, Mr. Eisen said there might be something to this investment and gave Pearce’s speech a 56.

C0RtPiJ.jpg25UZG0h.pngWDNhedH.jpgpTVhqwK.jpg

Avalanche immediately had a chance to show what he can do against another big bad black man in the newcomer Mutant. Bit of a mirror match and it didn’t help that Avalanche blew most of his spots, making Mutant look like the one with a better chance to make something of himself in the future. It was so bad that Kristen Pearce’s interference to cause a distraction almost felt like a desperate improv attempt to end the match early, allowing her man to make the pin. Only 36 for this match, but still I think it’s one we wouldn’t be seeing without the brand split so it’s good that lower tier talent get a chance to be on TV.

Backstage, Emma Chase interviewed the two new signings from California’s hardcore GSW scene, Cali Slick and Fro Sure. The two men took turns on the mic to essentially introduce themselves and say how excited they are to be with the Supreme Wrestling Federation, basic stuff but necessary to get them over with the fans. These two seem like they can hold their own on the stick and having a more well known on camera figure in Chase certainly helped make this easier for long time SWF, yielding a 48 from Mr. Eisen.

wifnrLi.jpg25UZG0h.pngx70kFLp.jpg

The two men then had a chance to showcase their in-ring skills in back to back matches, with Fro going first up against Robbie Wright. I think the man is still adjusting to the SWF style and at one point went a little too hard in his enthusiasm, fracturing his cheek bone from what we were later told. To his credit though, Fro Sure finished the match and put his opponent over, with Robbie Wright having to hold on to the tights for the pin in a finish that tried to keep them both looking strong. Mr. Eisen gave it a 35.

12RJue4.jpg25UZG0h.png1DWauMw.jpg

Cali Slick was up next and he faced “Platinum” James Prudence, also out of California. Slick is way more muscular than Fro Sure and hits with a lot more oomph, meaning Prudence had to be smart about this and outwrestle him. They went on for about ten minutes before Slick tapped out to the Prudential Pain Plan and it’s probably that veteran experience that carried the match a lot better than the previous one, to the point where I was told to write down a 47 as its grade.

A9QIsHm.jpgwO1UocA.jpg

Bit of a more storytelling segment next, Matty Faith walked up to Ranger backstage and tried to chat him up about the apparent issues the Dallas Cowboys seem to be facing. Ranger wasn’t much in a talking mood, but Faith did bring up an interesting point saying both their usual teammates (Masked Patriot and Marshall Dillon) had been drafted to the Supreme brand, setting up the punchline of him offering to reforme The Mission, their RIPW tag team, by having a match next week. Seems like something’s brewing in the tag ranks, I admit I’m interested to see this story play out. A 62 for this angle.

LsNPSwr.jpgzUkaBnq.jpgBUCgAQW.jpg

Ana Garcia was in the interview area with another of SWF’s new signings in Xavi Ferrera. The Puerto Rican star was all too happy to brag about his track and field background and all the things he’s going to accomplish, until ZWB stepped into the scene aggravated by Ferrera’s bragging about being “the absolute show stealer”. ZWB challenged him to put his money where his mouth is and prove it in the ring, so I guess that was to set up an “impromptu” match between them. Still, quite entertaining for what it was, a 59 from Mr. Eisen.

zUkaBnq.jpg25UZG0h.pngBUCgAQW.jpg

So the two men went at it and at least there was a bit of story or reason for this contest, enough to not feel like two random wrestlers thrown in to fill time. Also, the setup about being a show stealer was the justification for the match being an absolute spotfest as both men tried to outperform each other with flashy moves. In the end, Ferrera got frustrated and reached for a steel chair, but the referee caught him red handed and called for the bell, awarding the victory via disqualification to ZWB as Mr. Eisen awarded another 59.

kFrQtdk.jpgpM9mouj.jpg

More bragging as Des Davids cut a promo to address the result of his match against Lenny Brown at When Hell Freezes Over. This time it was “The Sensational” Steven Parker who appeared, congratulating the SWF North American champion for his defence but also making clear his intention to challenge for the title. Davids cackled at the suggestion, but not wanting to look like he was afraid, offered to give Parker a non title match next week just to prove that he can’t hang in the ring with a true champion. Not bad at all, a grade of 69 felt pretty solid.

VO0swHV.jpg25UZG0h.pngZG3gG6w.jpg

I don’t know why Matty Faith thought it would be a good idea to put Jungle Lord and Justin Sensitive in a match, but here we are. Fair bit of storytelling in this one too, with the Lord being the usual wildman and Sensitive freaking out. I guess since all his Rat Pack buddies have been drafted to Supreme, this was a way to show how weak, lost and cowardly he was in this new situation. For the record, Jungle Lord won this clean and it got a grade of 57.

WBnSRhJ.jpgN8a1je6.jpg

It seemed as though we were about to see another promo, this time from “The Dragon” Mikey Lau but Atom Smasher ran in and attacked him, leading to a crazy backstage brawl. On one hand it felt fresh and I was glad we were spared more cookie cutter talking, on the other hand I wouldn’t mind hearing Lau talk, this could have been done with one of the other guys. Anyway, neither man seemed to win this fight as road agents and staff rushed in to break it up, leading Mr. Eisen to rate it as a 79.

Remember when The Awesomeness showed up at When Hell Freezes Over? Of course you do, that was only two days ago. Anyway, they did get to finally wrestle in the night’s main event and their opponents were the recently crowned tag team champions This was a non title match of course, and the story was that the heels were fresh and rested while the faces were still reeling from their titanic struggle at the Pay Per View. Pretty exciting setup, good execution and a shocking win via Shock And Awe for the heel team as Huey Cannonball got the pin over “High Flying Hawaiian” James Adams. Perhaps done to set them up as the next title contenders, I can’t complain much about the match and neither did Mr Eisen who gave it a 68.

Overall the show got a grade of 71 from Mr. Eisen, who said it was passable despite lacking star power. I think it is to be expected since the roster is split in half and most of the big guns are with Uprising to fight the ratings war against TCW. Feels like Uprising will be more about up and coming stars and it’s good that people lower on the food chain are getting a chance to shine.

First off, I must commend you it made me smile so much at the fact that you have a two-hour show and make sure that the time limits for all the matches are under two hours. If all the matches have time limit draws the show would be exactly one hour and fifty-five minutes. Wish actual companies had attention to detail like that so main event matches wouldn't be rushed...

It was filled with action and set up their Pay Per View next Sunday, <em>Malice in Wonderland</em>. The show was held at the Dallas Sports Complex in front of 7,351 paid fans and early ratings numbers say the show was watched by 2,296,105 people for a rating of 3.06. Let's get right to the action.</span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/rt9uAOs.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">The show started with T-Bone Bright getting some promo time. The big brawler has been on quite the roll over the last few weeks and it's clear that The Historian sees a lot of potential in the brawler. He showed a lot of charisma here as he talked up his win streak and his plans for it to continue on and on. He said the sky's the limit for big T-Bone and he plans on touching the stars. I'd give this promo a very respectable <strong>72.</strong></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;"><strong><img src="https://i.imgur.com/XS3rcMx.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><img src="https://i.imgur.com/mmWyz8z.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><img src="https://i.imgur.com/mNkJ2b9.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></strong></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">Coming after the promo, we got our first match of the night. Veteran Dean Daniels took on new TCW signing "The Mat Assassin" Ernest Youngman.  This was an odd match to lead off TV as the crowd really wasn't invested in either guy. Sure, Ernest is a really good technician who has been tearing up the East Coast, but the fans in Dallas didn't know him from the concession guy and Dean Daniels hasn't been used as anything other than a guy to stare up at the lights -- which is what he did here. He tapped out to Ernest Youngman in what was just a really bad match. It's lucky to get a <strong>34</strong>. I expected more out of Ernest Youngman's debut.</span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/P3YHvhv.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><strong><img src="https://i.imgur.com/mmWyz8z.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></strong><img src="https://i.imgur.com/RRfXIi0.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">We followed up Dean Daniels and Ernest Youngman with Flying Jimmy Foxx and Matt Hocking going at it one on one. This was definitely refreshing after the stinker that was the opening contest. Hocking and Foxx are both pros and both are men who the audience knows which definitely helps them get reactions -- and reactions are everything in this business. You need them to either love or hate you and right now, they definitely hate Matt Hocking. This had good action with Matt Hocking showing the mean streak that he has been developing as a heel. Matt Hocking could make an excellent Television Champion down the line. Matt Hocking hit Jimmy with the <em>Hock Shock</em>, his version of the Super Kick to get the pin. <strong>65</strong>.</span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/DETuXK9.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">Our fourth segment took us backstage to "The Ace" Aaron Andrews. Aaron Andrews said he was looking forward to putting the World Title on the line against Wolf Hawkins at <em>Malice in Wonderland</em>. The Ace takes pride in being the leader of the TCW locker room and he carries the TCW World's Heavyweight Title with the pride that it deserves. In a week and a half, Aaron is going to prove once again his dedication to TCW and to being World Champion. Next week; however, he has been asked by TCW management to pick a warm-up match Wolf Hawkins, so next week, right here on Total Wrestling, Wolf Hawkins will take on the big brawler "Dazzlin'" Dave Diamond! It's a good promo but not Aaron's best. <strong>82.</strong></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/uQgcGE2.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><img src="https://i.imgur.com/qeVQajn.jpg" alt="" width="60" height="60" /><img src="https://i.imgur.com/EShyCUs.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><img src="https://i.imgur.com/zkLTAYI.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><strong><img src="https://i.imgur.com/mmWyz8z.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><img src="https://i.imgur.com/TDVHhXp.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><img src="https://i.imgur.com/1SQ7OJj.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><img src="https://i.imgur.com/C8jAYhM.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></strong></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">Big six man tag team match up next. Edd Stone teamed up with Devine Fortune to take on The Syndicate. This was Chris Flynn's big return to action after his injury. Flynn was really motivated in this match, but the match was structured to push forward the ongoing issues between Devine Fortune and The Elite. We know they're going to wrestle each other at <em>Malice in Wonderland</em> and this was all about continuing to set that story up. Eddie Chandler took several cheap shots and he and Nate did some illegal switches and Eddie Chandler locked in the Fabulous Stretch to force the submission and give The Syndicate the win. <strong>65</strong>.</span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/8FhSRaQ.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">We went to commercial and came back on Troy Tornado. Troy was all fire and brimstone and anger at the way he lost last week to T-Bone Bright. Troy Tornado wants a change to avenge his loss. He says he came into the match with a headcold and it affected his breathing and he wasn't himself and he needs a chance to make it right. <strong>61</strong>.</span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/ACelsUU.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><strong><img src="https://i.imgur.com/mmWyz8z.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></strong><img src="https://i.imgur.com/2dSx65c.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">We had a really good TV match next. One Man Army and Joshua Taylor. More of this please. A throw-away TV match with two guys with no issue other than wanting to win a match and they went out and worked hard. Taylor deserves a big run, he's just so damn good. I hope The Historian has plans for him because it'd be a shame if he didn't. They wrestled a very competitive match filled with some really good action -- including Joshua Taylor hitting a big plancha. It was wild at times in the best way of Southern 'rasslin and Joshua Taylor got the win when he forced One Man Army to submit to the Butterfly Lock.  <strong>73</strong>.</span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/O8YnpRE.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">Is there anyone on the planet that doesn't think Jay Chord is going to be TCW World Champion before the year is up? I don't think there is. He's just too good. He stood backstage and he cut a promo hyping him and Sammy Bach at <em>Malice in Wonderland</em> and I was enthralled the whole time. I just believe Jay Chord. I believe that he truly believes he's the evolution of professional wrestling, that he is the pro wrestler of the next two decades, that he truly believes he should be the face of TCW and man am I excited for Chord-Bach. This was easily an <strong>87</strong> and I probably am being too harsh because he rambled a little bit and had a little bit too much time in the segment. If it was a little shorter, it would have been a little tighter.</span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/1BwKFiH.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><img src="https://i.imgur.com/sGcMC7c.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><img src="https://i.imgur.com/mI7hMWp.jpg" alt="" width="60" height="60" /><img src="https://i.imgur.com/ByP8I6b.jpg" alt="" width="60" height="60" /></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">We followed Chord up with Wolf Hawkins standing with big Eddie Peak. Nick Booth and Floyd Goldworthy were both there but they were background players. Apparently, Wolf and Eddie have come to a financial agreement for next week where Nick Booth will take on Aaron Andrews. That should be a good, physical match and a good warm up match for Aaron and allow them to put Aaron in jeopardy while also not burying anybody. Solid segment but nothing spectacular. Probably the worst Wolf has looked in quite some time. He didn't <em>stand out</em> in this like I would have expected. <strong>65.</strong></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">                                    <img src="https://i.imgur.com/VJyytHt.jpg" alt="" width="100" height="50" /></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/L6O6iWQ.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><strong><img src="https://i.imgur.com/mmWyz8z.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></strong><img src="https://i.imgur.com/vItdKlH.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">Back to in-ring action with the Television Title clash between Benny Benson and Greg Gauge. This was another solid defense for Greg, but I would love to see him get some competition with people who can keep up with him. He's been running through guys for weeks now and this was no different. Greg twisted Benny into knots and really had his way with him on his way to forcing a tap out to the Proton Lock and notching his eleventh straight defense of the TV Title. If Jay will be World Champion this year, I think Greg is right behind him. <strong>66</strong>.</span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/OcDyQF8.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><strong><img src="https://i.imgur.com/mmWyz8z.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /></strong><img src="https://i.imgur.com/MuW9m7k.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="90" /><img src="https://i.imgur.com/wb9u2U7.jpg" alt="" width="60" height="60" /></span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">The main event was up next.  Sammy Bach and Freddy Huggins. This was a really good TV main event. Sammy needed a good match to build momentum for his match with Jay Chord and Freddy Huggins is such a good heel and his act with his sister is so good. I really like them and I'm glad to see them get on TV. In a perfect world, Freddy would be in the TV Title picture when Greg is inevitably elevated from it, but I'm not the booker. They didn't do anything big or fancy here, Sammy was clearly holding back to save himself for the pay per view next weekend, but they told a good story of Freddy cheating and working over Sammy's knees. Laura was a great distraction on the outside so that Freddy could hair pull and take cheap shots and it worked great and when Sammy made his big comeback and locked in his <em>Bach on Your Back, </em>his inverted sleeper hold with the bodylock, and got the submission victory. <strong>77</strong>.</span></p><p><span style="color: #ffffff;">Overall, this was a good show. It had solid action and it continued to build all of their essential storylines. They introduced another new signing in Ernest Youngman, who I think could be a big deal. With SWF falling in size, though, TCW's show really needs to be upgraded visually. They need some new cameras or something because they don't look like they're in SWF's league from a production standpoint. I'd give this show a <strong>70</strong> because of that.</span></p></td></tr><tr><td style="width: 915px;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/dCLnspm.jpg" alt="" width="900" height="26" /></td></tr></tbody></table><p> </p>

SWF Supreme TV Results [Tues. Wk. 3, Jan 2020]

qeYGKnn.jpg

From the diary of Samantha W. Fitzworthy

The post-brand split Uprising felt like an interesting change, so Mr. Eisen and I were curious to see how the flagship show would do on this night. This episode of Supreme TV was broadcast live from the Wisconsin Gardens in Madison, WI and had 2.662.631 viewers watching it live, a 3.55 on the ratings while a total of 8.925 tickets were sold.

qD6llvF.jpg2tpRL3H.jpg

The show began as usual with a Rocky Golden promo, the champion addressing what transpired at When Hell Freezes Over where he defended the SWF World Heavyweight title against Randall Buckminster Bumfhole. Before he could talk about Scythe’s appearance, he was cut off by Remo. The big man said nobody wanted to hear about “that guy in the cloak” and claimed all this stalking of the champion is not the way to get their attention. As Remo pointed out, he won a three way match against two of SWF’s biggest stars and he had every right to challenge for Rocky’s title. Fans popped bigtime at the announcement and the prospect of a Rocky-Remo title match and this was probably the best way one could start this episode. Stellar stuff, rated at 91.

z0va49v.jpg25UZG0h.pngFHUEpiU.jpg

We then went into the first match of the night as Bear Bekowski wrestled Masked Patriot. I’d say they leaned a bit too much into the Cold War dramatics for the execution, but it was an enjoyable match nonetheless and the crowd was super into it, hot as they were from the opening segment. Besides, both men have been a bit overlooked so it was nice to see two talented wrestlers ply their trade between the ropes. Bekowski made good use of his power to dominate the match and bully his opponent around and Patriot bumped hard to sell his offence, all the while garnering sympathy as he struggled to stay in the fight and win it clean via his technical acumen. It felt like a losing effort, until Patriot literally turned things around as he rolled up Bekowski for a surprising come-from-behind win. I’d say they had slightly over ten minutes for this match and managed to eke out a 52.

bD6Gn3a.jpggvy0H2L.jpg

Backstage, Eric Eisen was on interviewer duty and he introduced Dominic DeSousa. DDS cut a basic promo to introduce himself, his character and motivation while I struggled to remember the last time I saw him; he wasn’t on the Pay Per View, was it back when he fought Oliver Kobb? Anyway, he’ll be in action next week but not much else of substance here, though DeSousa is a natural on the mic and having “Easy E” there certainly added a certain gravitas. Perhaps with a few more segments like these and a couple of good matches, he could be going places. For now, Mr. Eisen gave him a 66.

“Angry” Tom Gilmore and Joey Morgan were back in tag team action again, this time announced as a proper team called “Best of the Best” and I love love love the reference, they even got the rights to use

as their entrance. Their opponents were The Domination, composed of two rookie workers in Avalanche and Chill. They’ve had some success in RIPW but fans barely have seen them on the main roster and didn’t seem to care much. From what I saw, Chill could probably be moulded into something, but Avalanche is little more than a big bad black man in a roster full of Remos and Primus Allens, I have no clue why they’re wasting Kirsten Pierce on trying to get him over. Anyway, this was never about those guys, they got a bit of TV time but they were mostly there to make Gilmore and Morgan look good before jobbing out to them. Still, Mr. Eisen rated this as a 60.

nq2GDOi.jpg2gUyrYj.jpg

Fresh off his PPV win over Jungle Lord, “The Supreme Star” Spencer Spade got some time on the mic and ugh, could his ego and swagger be any more bloated. I honestly can’t tell where the character ends and the person begins, so I guess he’s done well in that aspect. Spade cut his promo in a very “state of the nation” kind of style, as if addressing the SWF faithful in regards to his future plans like it’s a matter of life and death I can see why everyone says this kid’s going to be a world champion one day, but for now his sights are set on claiming the SWF North American champion. Interesting, since Steven Parker also challenged Des Davids on Uprising. I think either of those can have a great match with Des, or between them for #1 contendership or even in a triple threat match, so I’m interested to see where this story goes. Either way, I’m sure it’ll be better than when Lenny Brown was gunning for that title. No surprise this was rated an 85.

SVidnhr.jpg25UZG0h.pngcMCn9oC.jpg

Speaking of Lenny Brown, he had a match next against Mainstream Hernandez. To their credit, they went balls to the wall for almost fourteen minutes and Lenny had a much better chance to show what he can do since he was facing someone about his size and speed. Hernandez called the match and carried Brown through it while still selling for him to make things appear more competitive. A missed Shooting Star Press created an opening for Brown near the end, but instead of making the cover he insisted on pulling off his finisher, Hernandez barely climbing off his shoulders in time to escape. Things got so desperate that Hernandez had to reach for the trunks eventually to hold his opponent down and get the win. Not a bad way to protect Lenny while still presenting Hernandez as a cheating heel, this got a 66 from Mr. Eisen.

7MBpyeV.jpgOffRXjh.jpg

Alright, I admit, I laughed at this. It was silly enough to even have Mr. Eisen chuckle, as Robbie Retro literally danced his way into the frame, interrupting an angry Primus Allen promo. So get this, Robbie is his usual silly self, Primus plays it straight for the contrast, then he starts to hesitantly shake his hips, face still straight, as if the groove was taking over him against his will. Not exactly world class comedy, but still good for sports entertainment standards and well executed, I think 65 was a fair grade.

TvNbpxX.jpgcmXGyfa.jpgEylo95j.jpgW31esv4.jpg

Back to back angles then as the Rat Pack (minus Justin Sensitive who’s on Uprising) were joking amongst themselves for the beating they gave Brandon James at When Hell Freezes Over. Krissy Angelle was also there and laughing at the expense of “Big Money”, confirming her departure from his side after he turned face following that attack. According to the group, James was taken to the hospital that night with multiple head injuries and “ironically enough” it was that thick skull of him that got him in trouble in the first place but also what saved him from having his head pasted on the canvas. A bit too graphic for my liking there, I guess it was supposed to generate heat but still. Mr. Eisen seemed to enjoy this though and gave it a 70.

cmXGyfa.jpgEylo95j.jpg25UZG0h.pngZqKAoE0.jpgWfm7oyM.jpg

Fame & Money were also wrestling next, so I guess their promo was a sort of introduction, the Rat Pack convening before the match. Following their PPV loss to the new tag champions, Trescarde and Huntigdon were hell bent on winning here and they really needed to do so, having them go over was probably the right choice. Their opponents were Marshall Dillon and Oliver Kobb, reforming their Southern Comfort team, apparently in response to Ranger teaming up with Matty Faith on Uprising once more as The Mission. So, in a way, both teams had something to prove although Mr. Eisen thinks Southern Comfort can survive the loss, probably chalk it up to growing pains of learning to work together again. To me, it felt like the weakest match on the card even if technically the opener got a lower grade, with this one ranking as a 55.

inYGk7m.jpg

Last promo before the big main event, The Crippler was given some time on the mic and he cut a good promo as always. When he first transitioned from being Lobster Warrior into a shoot grappler pissed off at being laden with a silly gimmick, I thought this was another case of turning real life and internet gossip into an angle, but apparently Chris is legitimately frustrated, or at least has been and manages to tap into that for his character. The Crippler said that what he did to Mikey Lau was a warning shot and others should watch out, I say it’s not like this set up any matches or progressed any major storylines, but he’s still good with his words and popular with the fans, snagging a 71 for his performance here.

NpVvUsB.jpg25UZG0h.pngRSL6GBd.jpg

So in the main event, recently turned babyface Brandon James went up against Scythe and I’m not complaining about these two getting the spot or having a full quarter to put a match together, but it was a little bit out of left field: no announcement last week or even earlier in the episode, no hype, nothing. Anyway, Scythe finally got to wrestle a match on live TV instead of merely standing around like the boogeyman and James was just the man who could carry his less experienced dance partner to a great match. The two of them took it slow, with Scythe working the crowd and playing mind games while James played up his new weird gimmick which apparently has something to do with suffering a bit of brain damage after the Rat Pack attacked him. Mr. Eisen said he’s curious to see where this goes, personally I think it’s a poor approach towards concussions and mental health, but let's hope the Twitter mob doesn’t catch wind of it. What I liked about this though was that after each man did his thing at the start of the match, they slowly began meshing and it was a thing of beauty to see Scythe’s psychological warfare mess with James’ damaged personality. On top of that, Scythe has come up with a new move while working house shows, a killer clothesline he calls “The Reaping” and fans popped big time when he pulled it off (kudos to James who sold it like a champ). The audience ate it all up and it elevated the feel of the match even if the wrestling itself wasn’t exactly stellar and James put the kid over by getting chokeslammed and pinned. 76 for the main event from Mr. Eisen.

Overall, my boss gave a 76 to the entire episode as well, saying it was strong, but not strong enough to compete with TCW. It is, of course, to be expected since the full roster is not available, but the biggest stars are and I think it was a good start in this new era. Some good matches, great promos and it felt like storylines were advanced in the aftermath of When Hell Freezes Over, heading towards new directions and new pairings. I know I’m excited to watch next week’s episode.

It's Wednesday and you know what that means. USPW brings you American Wrestling and we're back in the South East for episode #3 of the new decade.

Casey Valentine
emerged victorious last week from his match with 'The Marksman'
Kirk Jameson
and will look to build on that momentum as he goes one-on-one with
Trent Schaffer
. Schaffer is currently embroiled in a feud with
Bulldozer Brandon Smith
and will look to pick up a win himself as they look destined to lock horns once again in the near future.

Pariah
looks to continue her tremendous white hot streak as she is in action vs
Tiffany Jade
. Pariah has drawn the ire of 'The Iron Lady'
Jillian Jarvis
but at the moment she currently looks unstoppable. Jade, however, is a former 2-time Women's Champion and won't be easily beat.

'The Bronzed God'
Zeus
looks set to challenge
Roger Cage
at Stars, Stripes and Slams! for the National title, especially after the beatdown given by Bad Intentions a few weeks back, and will face off with
Leaf LeBaum
. Cage said in a VTR last week that he'll be here this Wednesday but in what capacity remains to be seen.

Jumbo Jackson
faces off with
Jacob Jett
. Shockwave were victorious in tag team action last week and are determined for one more shot at the tag team champions to regain the belts. Nothing has been officially announced yet but this certainly looks like a strong indicator that the title match will happen.

Also on the show we'll see USPW Women's Champion
Jaime Quine
in action as well as her reaction to the draw in last week's #1 contenders match. We'll also no doubt see what 'The Dark Destroyer'
Steve Frehley
has in store for us after beatdown
Rick Law
last week with the help of his new affiliate and heavy muscle in the form of a mountain known simply as
Big Bubba
.

Another exciting night of action ahead and you won't want to miss it.

Hello and welcome to the third episode of our special edition series of the Behind The Curtain Podcast with me, Jo-Ro. We're continuing our series of recapping USPW and this week is their third episode of American Wrestling in 2020..

HLSJnbk.jpg

The show was presented from The Dust Bowl in the South East in front of a crowd of 11,048 with early estimates suggesting that viewing figures on Reverie were marginally down from last week to about 10.5million viewers. Let's jump in.

Segment 1:

'Cool Hand' Casey Valentine vs 'The Talent' Trent Schaffer

An excellent TV match from two of the best talents in the ring in the company that went just over 13 minutes and got the crowd 'hot' for the rest of the evening. Both men were fairly evenly matched for the most part with Raven Robinson even being unable to phase 'Cool Hand' Casey. What Valentine hadn't accounted for though was interference from his opponent last week in Kirk Jameson. 'The Marksman' tried to interfere unsuccessfully as he ate a stiff right hand but the distraction proved enough for Schaffer to get the roll-up and the 3-count.

(70)

Segment 2:

We then get the obligatory 3-on-1 post-match beatdown on a helpless Valentine. The fans roar to life as Bulldozer and Charity Sweet run to make the save and they send the bad guys packing before helping Valentine to his feet. This is an interesting story developing here and it looks like we could be pushing towards a 6-person tag at Stars, Stripes and Slams! which I'm all for or even the mixed tag and a singles also. A few options. Good start to the show.

(62)

Segment 3:

'The Green Dragon' Tiffany Jade vs Pariah

This match went a shade shy of 9-minutes, more than I thought it would, and gave both women a chance to show what they could do. It's easy to forget that Jade is only 30 years old as the two-time Women's champion has been with USPW for 7 years and is a good veteran. Pariah maintains her status as the hottest talent in the company and has big babyface support. She got the victory and maintains her momentum. Another good TV match.

(65)

Segment 4:

Heavy Duty vs Natural Storm

These 4 men made up 2/3s of the 6-man tag main event 2 weeks ago in which Howard got the pin over Thatcher for the win and it was a similar outcome here. Thatcher & Ducont came into this one almost desperate to prove their worth to Rich Money and their usefulness to The Business but Rayne & Howard had other ideas and continued to look good in action. Eddie Howard once again led the way in dispatching of the Heavy Duty duo and his Crash & Burn (Running Powerslam) finisher looks monstrous when done to a guy the size of Thatcher. Another decent match.

(64)

Segment 5:

At this point we cut backstage to see Rich Money watching a TV monitor (that we couldn't see because, presumably, it would just have shown him if he were watching the live feed) and he looked very disheartened and disappointed. He was then met by Zeus, who was heading toward the ring for his match next, and the two shared a few words that essentially amounted to "You're Rich Money and you deserve better than this. I can help with that" before Zeus walked off-screen. We then caught a glimpse of Jack Jackson who offered a smarmy quip at the expense of The Business and he appeared to also offer this services.

A fun little segment that seems to feed into the idea that there could be a shake-up within The Business and a tease of some new members possibly?

(67)

Segment 6:

'The Bronzed God' Zeus vs Leaf LeBaum

Roger Cage stole the limelight in the beginning of this match as he joined the commentary booth moments before the match began clearly looking to scout out his opponent for Stars, Stripes and Slams! Cage was fun on commentary here and I would definitely enjoy seeing more of him at the desk if that was his future. He's a natural colour guy. Leaf LeBaum is a promising young talent but he hasn't had a lot of screen-time since his signing back in August but he bounced around for a shade shy of 8-minutes, even getting some flashy offence in, before Zeus put him away comfortably. The match probably went a bit too long and it was the worst match of the night.

(51)

Segment 7:

After the match we see Zeus talking smack in the direction of the champion who throws down his headset and swaggers to the ring but before the two come to blows Cage was the victim of yet another beatdown by Bad Intentions and the champ would've been looking in rougher shape heading into the title showdown if not for American Gold running to the ring and making the save on the National Champion and encouraging the heels to back off. English & Chamberlain. An interesting spot for the babyface duo who ate a comfortable loss last week but they're plucky and young and an alliance with Cage would certainly work in their favour going forward.

(51)

Segment 8:

We then get a backstage promo from Steve Frehley. Frehley was excellent on the mic in running down Rick Law and demanding that if Law wants his rematch, it should be tonight in the main event of the show and that he'd be in the ring waiting. His promo is briefly cut off though by a vignette and talking head from Nicky Champion. 'Hawkeye' cuts him off and promises that he's returning very soon and that Frehley needs to be afraid of what's to come. The fans roared their approval at the brief appearance of Champion and this was a wonderful segment that ended with Frehley, appearing nervous, claiming that he wasn't concerned about Champion and he has Big Bubba plus more back-up so that 'Hawkeye' should think twice before returning. Excellent segment.

(92)

Segment 9:

'The Amazing' Jacob Jett vs Jumbo Jackson

This was the first time we've seen either of the tag team champions on TV this year as they appear to be a bit of an afterthought at the moment. The match delivered a decent spectacle for 10-minutes in which champion Jett was getting the better or the much bigger and brutish Jackson for the most part utilising his agility and aerial ability to keep the big guy grounded and work his knees. The conclusion came when Jett was caught mid-air by the hobbling Jumbo and was floored by the Jumbo Avalanche which also caught the referee and stunned him. Atlas, who had accompanied Jumbo to ringside, elected to get involved but Moor went to prevent it and was taken out. Jumbo landed another Jumbo Avalanche and the referee slowly counted to 3. A decent match that makes the gold seem relevant suddenly.

(63)

Segment 10:

The two teams continue to brawl after the match as chaos begins to ensue. Jumbo appeared to be selling the knee and struggling to get himself together as Atlas continued trying to fight off the champions by himself. The champions toppled the big man who went tumbling into Jumbo and Jumbo once again was clutching his knee in pain. A good angle that seems to sell the heel challengers being at a possible disadvantage. Unconventional.

(62)

Segment 11:

'Fearless' Faith McGee vs Jaime Quine

McGee, ever the bubbly babyface, had a big opportunity here in a non-title affair vs the champion. The match went past the 9-minute mark, probably a bit longer than needed, that was mostly carried by Quine who is having a great run as champion so far these past 6 months. She ended the match with her vicious K.O Kick for the convincing win.

(62)

Segment 12:

Quine then took it upon herself to grab a mic and address Alicia Strong and Sara Marie after last week's events. Quine exudes arrogance here and claims that the title will remain hers regardless and so offers to defend it at Stars, Stripes and Slams! in a triple threat match vs the two contenders. A confident and comfortable promo from the champion who hypes up the title match at the Special Event well.

(72)

Segment 13:

After the quick commercial break 'The Dark Destroyer' Steve Frehley's music was blaring through the arena and he stood in the ring, backed up by Big Bubba, instantly calling out Rick Law for the sought after rematch that the man of the law so keenly wanted. Then Law's music hit and he made it clear that after last week's beatdown he wasn't up for competing tonight but that he could see Frehley was determined for a fight and so he found a very capable replacement. The anticipation grew until the mystery was revealed and we were greeted with the return of The Force which drew a big response from the live crowd.

A great segment with many moving parts that kept the crowd nice and hot for the main event.

(86)

Segment 14:

'The Dark Destroyer' Steve Frehley vs The Force

The crowd were fired-up and hot for this match and if it had been about 3 minutes shorter it could have torn the house down. As it happened it was still a good TV match but not a great one. These two forces of nature just tore into each other with an all-out brawl that the fans ate up. To the majority of the USPW crowd this would be an all-time classic but to the smarter folks they would see that this 11-minute brawl began to expose The Force towards the end that maybe he can't quite 'go' as he used to. Bubba and Law were on hand to get involved if required but didn't need to and as The Force began to tire Frehley capitalised and utilised his powerhouse capabilities to stop The Force and bring the match to an end with his Dark Destroyer Spear to close out the show.

(69)

So American Wrestling this week may have been slightly down in live attendance and in the viewership but I'd actually rate it as a slightly better show than the two previous efforts. It's a big roster and ensuring everyone gets TV time whilst trying to push storylines is quite the task and so there's bound to be some teething problems in the beginning but this was an okay show that was very much carried by the angles involving Steve Frehley. At the moment the man is currently carrying the show in the absence of Nicky Champion and his segments tonight showed as much. On the whole the match quality and skit/promo quality was up on previous weeks and the company are building nicely towards Stars, Stripes and Slams! A 68 seems a fair score.

Til next time friends, I'm Jo-Ro.
