thunderwill Posted July 4 Share Posted July 4 I am Will, the current owner and booker of Pacific Northwest Wrestling. The history of this promotion extends far beyond my time in charge. Established in the 1920s, Pacific Northwest Wrestling began when Herb Owen surpassed Ted Thye in managing a boxing and wrestling promotion in the northwest. In 1942, Don Owen assumed control of the company following his father's passing. Don Owen later became a key figure in the NWA (National Wrestling Association) as one of its founding members in 1947. Portland Wrestling made its TV debut on KPTV in 1953, moving to KOIN in 1955 and back to KPTV in 1966. In 1968, Don Owen purchased an old bowling alley and transformed it into the now iconic Portland Sports Arena. During the 1970s, the wrestling scene in the northwest thrived with notable wrestlers such as Ripper Collins, Buddy Rose, Rip Oliver, Ed Wiskowski, Roddy Piper, Jesse Ventura, and Lonnie Mayne dominating Portland Wrestling. The momentum continued into the early 1980s, culminating in Portland Wrestling's pinnacle in 1985 with the 60th Anniversary Extravaganza. Don Owen and Pacific Northwest Wrestling filled the Portland Coliseum to capacity for this memorable event, which is still regarded as a significant moment in wrestling history. However, this marked the start of a decline for Portland Wrestling, as Pacific Northwest Wrestling dwindled within a year. Many prominent wrestlers departed for larger promotions like WWF (World Wrestling Federation), AWA (American Wrestling Associations), and JCP (Jim Crockett Promotions), leaving PNW with an aging roster of veterans and inexperienced rookies. PNW now remains as the sole original member of the NWA. My story began when I ran a small wrestling promotion in Coos Bay, Oregon, with the help of Don Owen. Don Owen, passionate about his ranch, did not grasp the evolving wrestling industry. He offered me the role of head booker and ownership of Pacific Northwest Wrestling, a declining business amidst the shift from territorial to national wrestling promotions. At 27, I found myself at the helm of an empire in crisis. Addressing the younger audience members in the coliseum, he expresses that they are in for a special treat this night, as he is poised to demonstrate that heroes will always lose, and that Curt Henning will do what he does best, disappoint everyone. [44] VS Al Madril Curt Hennig Curt Hennig defeated Al Madril with a rollup at the 12:56 mark. [57] Highlights of the match A leapfrog and monkey flip by Hennig gave him the early advantage. Hennig avoided a monkey flip of his own by landing on his feet that got a big ooh from the crowd. Hennig then tried a dropkick but missed landing on his face. Madril follows with a slam and elbow drop for two. A second slam by Madril but the second elbow drop misses. After giving Madril a cross-corner whip, Hennig delivered a back body drop and got two. A delayed atomic drop by Hennig was countered with a poke to eyes, allowing Madril to pull something from his trucks Madril swings widely that Hennig was easily able to avoid and quickly rolls him up for the three count. VS Billy Two Eagles Super Ninja Billy Two Eagles defeated Super Ninja with a rollup at the 8:30 mark. [37] Highlights of the match Billy Two Eagles hooked a crucifix pinfall but only got one right after the bell rang. Eagles followed knee to the face and another roll-up for one. Ninja tosses Eagles down to the concrete floor and leaps from the apron and deals Eagle a double axe handle. Ninja tries to suplex him back into the ring and Eagles escapes and gets a back slide for a two count. Ninja responded with a knee drop, he chopped Eagles down for two. Eagle escaped a nerve hold but ate a thrust kick right to the stomach. Ninja mounted the second turnbuckle and uncorked a flying knee drop. Ninja slams Eagle then hooking in the Boston crab. When Eagle refuses to submit, Ninja slams him again. Super Ninja mounted the second turnbuckle but missed a flying elbow drop on the down Eagles. Eagle traps Ninja in an inside cradle for the three count. Billy Jack Haynes excitedly shares his thoughts about his much-anticipated match with Ric Flair scheduled for later tonight. He expresses confidence, noting the overwhelming support from the passionate Portland crowd rallying behind him he will finally bring the NWA World Heavyweight Championship to Portland. Oliver follows with a back elbow, then a running forearm but only gets two. Royal tries for a comeback but Oliver hits him with a running clothesline off the ropes and finally getting the three count. VS Fabolous Lance The Grappler The Grappler defeated Fabolous Lance with the loaded boot at the 7:53 mark. [32] Highlights of the match The Grappler hits a back drop quickly in the match and gets a two count. Lance fights back and gets Grappler in the corner for the ten-punch count-along to cheers of the crowd. Not to be out done Grappler returns the favor to Lance but the crowd boos him. Grappler tried a dropkick but misses badly and the crowds starts to laughs at him. Lance then hooked an inside cradle and got two. Grappler seems to have enough of Lance and loads up his boot and catches Lance coming off the ropes right in the gut. Grappler then rolls him up and gets the three count. Tom Zenk opens up about his highly anticipated match against Bobby Jaggers for the NWA Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Championship. As Zenk prepares to step into the ring, he understands the immense challenge that lies ahead. Jaggers, a seasoned and ruthless competitor, will undoubtedly go to great lengths to prevent Zenk from claiming the title. [39] VS Ricky Santana El Uno El Uno defeated Ricky Santana with a moonsault at the 8:12 mark. [34] Highlights of the match El Uno countered an arm bar with a shot to the midsection. VS Cocoa Samoa Tapu Samoa Battlecat Archangel Cocoa Samoa & Tapu Samoa defeated Battlecat & Archangel when Cocoa hits Battlecat with brass knuckles behind the referees back to pick up the victory at the 13:18 mark. [51] Highlights of the match Before the bell even sounded, Tapu slammed Battlecat while Cocoa gave Archangel a back elbow. Clothesline by Tapu to Battlcat followed by a knee lift. After receiving a cross-corner whip from Cocoa, Battlecat flipped upside-down in the corner. Sunset flip by Battlecat thwarted by Tapu and Tapu throws him into the turnbuckle Sideslam by Battlecat out of nowhere allows him to get a tag A big elbow to Tapu by the Archangel gives his team the momentum for the first time. Piledriver by Archangel to Tapu but it was too close to Cocoa allowing him to get the tag on the knocked out Tapu After giving Cocoa a clothesline and a slam, Archangel climbs the top turnbuckle. Archangel with a big cross-body on Cocoa but it only get a two count After a cross-corner whip by Archangel to Cocoa, their heads rammed together sending both men down. Both Archangel and Cocoa are desperate to get a tag. Both men get the tags Powerslam by Tapu to a running Battlecat but he was still recovering from the piledriver and takes to long for the cover which he only gets two. Tapu tags in Cocoa and Tapu quickly attacks Archangel on the other side of the ring, distracting the referee Cocoa quickly put on the brass knuckles he pulled from his tights and just nails Battlecat right in the head. 1-2-3. Cocoa pinned Battlecat. Ric Flair gives an interview in the back.. Ric Flair expresses how much he hates coming to Portland and that he was forced to show up tonight to face some nobody by the name of Willy Joe Hanks. [33] Highlights of the match A pair of dropkicks by Sawyer sent Doring out of the ring. When Doring returns to the ring, he tried to nail Sawyer but ate an atomic drop instead. Crossbody got two for Sawyer. Abdominal stretch by Sawyer broken by an eye rake from Doing Doring with a running knee right into the gut of Sawyer, pushing Sawyer into the corner. Sunset flip by Doring gets a two count. After dodging a charging Sawyer, Doring climbs the top turnbuckle. Sawyer caught him causing Doring to straddle the top turnbuckle. After Doring fell from the top turnbuckle, Sawyer climbs the same ropes and hits a flying crossbody pinning him for the victory. VS Tom Zenk Bobby Jaggers w/ a mystery woman Tom Zenk defeats Bobby Jaggers with a quick roll-up after Jaggers hits himself in the head with a cowbell at the 17:37 mark. Tom Zenk becomes the NEW PACIFIC NORTHWEST HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION [45] Highlights of the match Jaggers is joined by a beautiful woman holding a cowbell around her waist After receiving a cross-corner whip, Zenk hit the top turnbuckle, sailed over it, and landed on the concrete floor to start the match. Jaggers followed him outside the ring and slammed Zenk on the concrete. As Zenk was trying to re-enter the ring, Jaggers put a knee in his midsection. Zukhov follows with a guillotine to the top rope. Swinging neckbreaker by Jaggers gets a two count. Jaggers rams Zenk into the top turnbuckle and tosses him back outside the ring. Jaggers tried a piledriver on the concrete, but thankfully Zenk countered with a back drop. With Zenk back in the ring, Jaggers tries to reenter the ring from the top rope. Zenk caught him and brought him down the hard way right in the middle of the ring. Back elbow and a dropkick from Zenk put Jaggers down. After giving Jaggers another back drop, Zenk attempted a clothesline but nailed the referee instead as Jaggers just fell to the canvas. While Zenk checked on the referee, Jaggers quickly gets the cowbell from the woman outside. Jaggers swings the cowball but Zenk saw it coming a duck out of the way, causing the cowbell to swing around and nail Jaggers right in the head Zenk quickly rolls up the stunned Jaggers and gets the one, two, three from the referee Tom Zenk becomes the new NWA Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Champion VS Hawk Animal Magnum TA Ivan Koloff Nikita Koloff Alexis Smirnoff Road Warriors & Magnum TA defeated The Russians & Alexis Smirnoff when the Road Warriors hit the Doomsday Device on Smirnoff at the 13:53 mark. Shoulder block by Ivan didn’t go well, so Animal gave him a shoulder breaker for his troubles Leg drop by Magnum gets two on Ivan thanks to a save by Alexis Alexis missed a running clothesline, and the Magnum made him pay with a knee to the midsection and follows with a massive slam Leg drop by Magnum to Alexis, and Magnum tags in Hawk who hits Alexis with a long delayed atomic drop All six men brawled as Magnum and Ivan fought outside the ring. Nikita his thrown to the outside, leaving Alexis alone with the Road Warriors The Road Warriors is in position and nail Alexis with the Doomsday Device landing him right on his head. The victory was not in doubt after that as Ivan and Nikita couldn’t save him. VS Billy Jack Haynes Ric Flair Billy Jack Haynes defeated Ric Flair as a masked wrestler attacked Billy Jack Haynes at the 23:46 mark. This was for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. [62] Highlights of the match Haynes wins a wristlock battle as Flair is already done to a knee to a delight of the crowd Hip toss and dropkick! by Haynes gets another big pop from the crowd Haynes gets Flair in the gorilla press and walks around the ring as Flair is begging for his life and Haynes just drops him to the canvas Knee to the midsection and a chop gave Flair the advantage. Haynes reversed a cross-corner whip then gave Flair a back body drop. Another hip toss by Haynes, but he missed another dropkick. Knee drop and another knee to the midsection by Flair. Flair with a butterfly suplex for two. Abdominal stretch by Flair, but the referee caught Flair grabbing the trunks. After giving Haynes a cross-corner whip, Flair missed a knee drop. Haynes then hooked the figure-four leg lock. Flair made the ropes breaking the hold After getting Flair out of the corner, Haynes tried another attempt at the figure-four but was poked in the eye. Flair attempted a vertical suplex, but Haynes reversed it for two. Backslide by Haynes only got two. Flair rams Haynes him shoulder-first into the ring post on the outside. Hammerlock by Flair as he put his feet on the ropes for another two count. Flair got a series of two counts on Haynes. Each time using the bottom rope for leverage Crucifix pin got a two count for Flair. After reversing a cross-corner whip, Haynes applied the sleeper. Flair went down to the mat but smartly put his foot on the bottom rope. After a slam, Haynes tried but failed at a splash hitting knees. Knee crusher by Flair sets up the figure-four leg lock. Haynes reversed the hold, but Flair broke it immediately. Flair made another attempt at a figure-four leg lock, but Haynes hooked the inside cradle for two. Flair flip sent the champion over the top rope to the concrete outside. Haynes joins him on the outside but received another knee to the midsection for his troubles. Flair tried to ram Magnum head-first into the ring post, but Haynes blocked it and sent Flair into it instead. Several right hands by Haynes resulted in a Flair flop. Haynes got another two count. As chaos unfolded, other wrestlers rushed to the scene to intervene, only to be thwarted by the unexpected arrival of Ed Woskowski and Doug Somers, who emerged from the crowd to support the masked wrestler. The tension peaked when the mystery man mercilessly subjected Haynes to a devastating DDT on the unforgiving concrete floor of the coliseum, leaving the audience in shock. In a moment of revelation, the mystery man revealed his true identity to an astonished crowd – none other than Buddy Rose, marking his return to Portland in a stunning fashion.. My only regret is that there weren't a few more filled seats in the coliseum. Nevertheless, it was undeniably a fantastic event. I'm curious about everyone else's opinions on it. Don Coss The event was a resounding success, and Buddy Rose's surprise truly had that audience shocked to its core. Furthermore, the majority of the matches went as anticipated, as I believe it was an excellent wrestling show overall. Dutch Savage I concur; it would have been great to see the coliseum filled as it was last year, but given the recent turmoil, it's understandable why attendance dropped. We put in a lot of effort to bring in the Road Warriors, Magnum TA, The Russians, and Ric Flair for the event, which the fans absolutely loved. I believe Buddy Rose's comeback will significantly aid in regaining our fanbase, and we should capitalize on this momentum. Tony Borne Overall, the show was good, though it did drag a bit in the middle but no one is perfect for their first show. However, the last three matches truly showcased why Portland Wrestling has such a passionate fanbase. Having Rose on board is a positive move, and hopefully, his return will help build up some younger stars for the future. Sandy Barr Being close to the action for every match was fantastic, and the fans absolutely loved it. My only gripe is that we really need a referee if we're going to have that many matches on a card; by the end, I was exhausted—I'm not getting any younger. Will Thank you, Sandy, for your candor. I am assured that we can resolve the issues prior to the upcoming major event. While the extravaganza was a triumph, our attention must now turn to long-term planning for the upcoming months. The next big event is Emerald Fusion, slated to take place at the Mercer Center in Seattle, Washington in the third week in April. I hope our fans are looking forward to these unique events and the future of Portland Wrestling. Dutch Savage I don't see an issue here. If we ensure our fans are aware of these major events in advance, they'll likely attend or tune in to see what we're offering. We need to engage the fans with our wrestlers and the promotion to make these special events successful throughout the year. Tony Borne I'm not fond of this approach. Portland Wrestling has never followed what other promotions are doing, and we've been doing just fine. Our fans expect to see special events at every one of our shows. I don't understand why we need to advertise that these events aren't special, but this one show is. Why would they care about the other shows then? Sandy Barr I don’t see any issue with that. The boys will appreciate a nice, steady schedule each month. I'm all for it. Don Coss I see no issue here, but it's crucial that we develop strong storylines and build significant momentum leading into this event, so we aren't dependent on the NWA for assistance to attract an audience to the arena. Will Tony, your concern is noted. Although we're copying things other promotions are doing, it's essential to adapt to changing times. In my opinion, engaging storylines that captivate our audience will make these larger events beneficial to everyone. Let's examine the roster and key storylines to focus on and collect your insights. As Don and Dutch emphasized, engaging our fans deeply with our promotion is essential. A stellar roster and captivating storylines are key to maintaining our current fan base and drawing in new followers. Given Bobby Jaggers' uninspiring attitude and ring performance, it might be time to consider his gradual exit from Portland Wrestling. Even with a new manager, his traits don't match the wrestler we're looking for going foward. We could start a feud for him, leading to a "loser leaves town" match as a conclusion. Despite his status as a former champion, his recent matches have been subpar, and his lack of motivation is evident. Tony Borne Bobby Jaggers is the ideal grizzled veteran our promotion needs. We want our fans to believe the action in the ring is real, and Jaggers delivers that. We don't need everyone flying off the top rope; in fact, we should stop that altogether. Those moves aren't believable, that is not wrestling. The fans expect a certain style of wrestling, and that's what Jaggers provides. A few bad performances don't mean he shouldn't be our champion. I disliked the decision to put the championship belt on Tom Zenk instead of continuing with Jaggers. Sandy Barr Bobby has always been lackadaisical in the ring; I don’t understand why it's suddenly a problem. Don Coss I concur that Jaggers didn't perform well in Portland this time. Nevertheless, we cannot condone wrestlers who demonstrate a lack of effort and become a hazard in the ring. Recently, Jaggers has been responsible for injuring two fellow wrestlers. Although the injuries were neither severe nor permanent, such occurrences must not be ignored. Tony, considering your firm position on wrestler safety, it's clear that Jaggers is now a liability. Whether it involves a one-month, three-month, or six-month storyline, we should introduce a younger wrestler who can convincingly defeat Jaggers, thereby removing him from the promotion. I concur with Colt and Lance's proposals. Let's deliberate on this and finalize our strategy at the upcoming meeting. Billy Jack Haynes is certainly cherished in Portland for his charisma and deep rapport with the fans. It would be a grave error if we fail to capitalize on this opportunity. Dutch Savage While I don't dispute Brett's suitability, I've been scouting a promising young wrestler named Ray Apollo. He's a bit green, but he possesses the potential to be a major star, with an indefinable 'it' factor. Training with Rose, Somers, and Wiskowski will only lead to great things for him. Brett may be ready to shine now, but for the long haul, Ray seems like the best bet and someone I believe Portland will embrace. Tony Borne You insist that we need to grow and change our ways, yet you suggest reusing the Rose Army and a face turn that we've done several times. While it's true that it works, I'm puzzled why we'd want to move towards the future while still relying on past tactics. However, if we're just throwing names out there, why not consider Matt Borne? He's tough, understands the role expected of him, and knows how to wrestle the Portland way. Sandy Barr If you're in search of a young wrestler, consider Art. We all know him; he's at every show and has been training intensely for the past few years. He's young, handsome, and the ideal sidekick to betray Rose. Will Thank you for the suggestions; we will take them into account before our upcoming meeting. Kindly prepare a list of candidates you think we should consider, and we can then decide collectively. We're looking for a youthful person who can connect with our audience effectively and has the potential to be our next standout star. This choice is of great importance as it may determine our future, just putting that out there. The papers before you outline the schedule for February. We will maintain the same timetable: Portland TV tapings on Tuesday, Salem on Thursday, and Eugene on Friday. On the first Monday of the month, we'll head to the coast for a visit to Seaside, Oregon, and the Seaside Convention Center. It's been a while since our last visit to Seaside, so it promises to be enjoyable. On the third Monday, we're off to Centralia, Washington, at the Centralia College Gym, and on the third Thursday, we'll make a trip to Medford, Oregon, at the Medford Armory. Having not been to either location in over a year, we're hopeful to deliver a fantastic show and revisit them again soon.
