Fighting the Gorgeous Ladies...

The day she turned 16, Claire Maynard celebrated by attacking a girl who'd bullied her twin sister for months. The girl ended up in hospital. Claire ended up locked up in a juvenile detention centre in England. The day she turned 18 happened to be the day she was let out. While in prison, she'd learnt a lot - most of it stuff the authorities hadn't wanted her to know. In particular, she'd learnt how to fight even harder. Being small and lightweight actually helped her - a lot of the older women had though she'd be easy to push around, right until they felt her nails dig into their face and saw her attack. England wasn't good enough any more. Time for pastures new... those of her father, and the land of her birth. Time to go back to America. Apart from anything else, she'd heard there was a place there she could fight and get paid for it. A place called GLOW...

She'd picked a good time to apply for a job with the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Times were hard with the wrestling industry, and the Las Vegas fed had shed several workers, including Chainsaw and Spike, Sally and Amy, and Little Feather. They were left needing some cheap girls for the bigger stars to beat up, and Claire looked like she'd be a good fit. As she heard the owner say this to her, she smiled inwardly - that might be how he thought it would go, but just wait and see... The day she signed, she stopped to watch the show. It was headlined by Matilda the Hun's championship win against Tammy Jones - okay, there were two women who looked fairly tough. But further down the card, the Cheerleaders, the Southern Belles, the Beverley Hills Girls, California Doll - these weren't women who could stand up to Claire, she was sure. Let the domination commence! The following Monday was the big test for Claire, as she went up against Tina Ferrari. $1300 or so at stake for the winner - but more to the point, the chance to make an explosive debut for our heroine. Ferrari was just a year older than Claire, but much more experienced, and she had Jackie Stallone in her corner. Backstage, Claire waited impatiently. She saw owner David McLane, announcer Montgomery Van, and a bunch of the other workers, but she ignored them. She wasn't here to make friends - just to make money, and let out some of her frustration at the world. Smiling grimly, she waited for the music she'd selected , a cheap rip-off of "New Rose" by the Damned, to kick in, and stormed out. Standing in the ring, awaiting the main eventer, sneering at the fans. Match 1 [I]Claire Maynard vs Tina Ferrari[/I] Arm wringer. Forearm blow. Arm bar. Side headlock takedown. The first four moves Claire fell victim to in her GLOW career. She couldn't believe how quickly Ferrari moved, this wasn't quite what she'd bargained for... But then she sidestepped Ferrari as Tina went for a move, and grabbed a handful of the older girl's hair. Slap, kick, headbutt, punch - this is what she knew. Another hair pull, and a bodyslam! She blasted Tina with a kick to the arm, then went for another to the head, but missed. Still, at least Ferrari knew that she had some fight in her now. As she thought that, she walked into a stiff forearm from Tina, then an arm lock, and a wrenching head scissors to take her to the floor. On the mat, Tina did a handstand, driving her knee into Claire's shoulder. Picking Maynard up, Ferrari signalled, much to the delight of the crowd, and hit a British piledriver! One... two... three!! And Claire realised that things weren't going to be quite as easy as she'd hoped for in GLOW. (Match rating E.)

That was a rough first match for Miss. Maynard. Good luck to her in future matches and with her career. I'm sure that Austin Powers or James Bond might have their hands full with her as well with this British spitfire of a gal.

After her debut, Claire wasn't sure whether she'd be asked to come back for the Thursday event, May's biggest for GLOW. She was glad that she was... at least until she found out who she was facing. Mountain Fuji. The monster face is about 7 times Claire's size (or it sure feels like it!), and this could be an even shorter bout than the first one. Match 2 [I]Claire Maynard vs Mountain Fuji[/I] Slaaaaaaap! Nothing like making someone who could kill you by accidentally falling over on top of you angry, huh? Claire follows with a punch, then a headbutt to the chest... (to get a headbutt to the head, she'd need a goddamn stepladder!), which don't really faze Fuji. Hard throat thrust does actually seem to have some effect, although it also draws a warning from the referee. Claire kicks, slaps, and butts away for another minute or so, without Fuji seeming particularly bothered. Turning away for a second, Claire 'adjusts her boot' - then blasts Fuji in the throat with some sort of foreign object! But as she goes for it again, Fuji finally starts to take notice, and smashes her with a forearm blow to take her down! She follows with a knee to the leg, then a grounded ankle twist - then tries to walk across Claire's chest, but Claire desperately rolls out of the way. Getting to her feet, Claire furiously punches away, then jabs her knee into Fuji's stomach. Two forearms hit the back of Fuji's head, then Maynard leaps up top... only to miss a flying knee. Bear squeeze drains the energy out of Claire, who slumps to the floor, and Fuji bounces off the ropes - but misses a splash!! Claire drapes an arm over her fallen opponent... OH... MY... GOD!!!! OH... SWEET... FREAKIN'... JAYSUS!!!!! MAYNARD WINS!!! MAYNARD WINS!!! MAYNARD WINS!!! Talk about a goddamn giantkilling!! Fuji is unable to kick out, her wind completely gone after missing that huge splash attempt, and the 18 year old gets her first ever win, against the previously undefeated giantess!! Match sucked (F), but who the hell cares?! Post match, David McLane approaches our heroine to congratulate her - she has definitely arrived. Claire suggests that as she'll obviously be at the top of the cards from now on, perhaps a suitable tag partner would be an idea? And who more suitable than Matilda the Hun? McLane agrees, and GLOW's newest part time tag team are formed. Without a name yet (all suggestions welcomed.)

No sense hanging around when you have a good idea, and the new team would debut at the following GLOW TV show, taking on the Beverley Hills Girls. As far as Claire was concerned, this was a golden opportunity for revenge on Tina Ferrari. Pre-match, she told Matilda to concentrate on Ashley Cartier... and she'd beat the hell out of Ferrari. Matilda said nothing, but nodded. Time for vengeance. Match 3 [I]Claire and Matilda vs the Beverley Hills Girls[/I] Claire got her wish straight away, with Tina starting off for the Hills Girls. A couple of slaps staggered her, then a kick to the gut and a headbutt, and she sent her reeling with a vicious running chop, before taking her down with a bodyslam. Ferrari down on the floor, Claire kicked her hard in the arm - then smiled. Slowly reaching down, she picked Tina up - and put her over her knee and spanked her! The crowd went wild with anger as Claire and Matilda savoured the moment, laughing. No need for them to think that she was letting the chance to humiliate Tina get in the way of a win, though. Putting her down, she grabbed Ferrari's legs, then fell backwards, slingshotting her into the turnbuckle! Jumping up to the ropes, she blasted her with ten punches to the head, Matilda gleefully counting along in German, then rammed her shoulder into Ferrari's chest. Looking towards the Hun, Claire decided to be generous, and tag her in to finish Ferrari off - but Tina somehow stopped her! Bursting to life, Ferrari got an arm wringer, then a wrist lock, and sent Claire to the ropes before hitting a dropkick on her way back! And then she went for the tag, but got it! Cartier drove Maynard into the turnbuckle, then hit a shoulder charge, and a DDT! Running splash got 2... but this time Claire did manage to tag out. Matilda came in, hitting two stiff slaps to the chest, then bowling Ashley over with a running body smash. A knee drive to the leg followed, but a Giant Chest Walk missed, and Cartier hit a forearm blow. She couldn't get a side headlock on properly, though, and Matilda felled her with a roundhouse blow, then tagged Claire back in! Ashley fought back, hitting a spinning head scissors to counter a bodyslam, and locking on a Boston Crab, but Claire broke out, then hit the bodyslam properly. Tag made to Matilda, who dragged Ashley around the ring by her hair to keep her away from her own corner. Big bear hug attempt followed, but a bell clap staggered the German for long enough for Tina to tag in! Claire saw her rival enter the fray and immediately rejoined herself, slapping away at her, bodyslamming her, and then dropping down and hitting a series of brutal headbutts! Slipping something into her boot, Claire went for a hard kick, but Tina rolled out of the way. Ferrari went for a powerbomb, only for Claire to adjust her weight and land on top for a 2 count. Seated dropkick misses from Claire, an airplane spin by Tina dizzies her, but Ferrari can't get that British piledriver this time. She does hit a bodyslam, though, and leaps up top - moonsault! One, two... this one's over! 2-0 Tina, and Claire is fuming. (Match rating B.) Backstage, Claire stormed past all the other girls. She knew that she'd had that one under control - if she hadn't wasted time going to tag in Matilda, it could have been over before Cartier had even got into the ring. Still, she'd enjoyed humiliating that bitch Ferrari when she put her over her knee - and she had no doubt that she'd get another chance to meet one or both of the Beverley Hills Girls sooner or later.

Tough loss last match. Tina Ferrari might be the best fighter working for GLOW, so there is no shame in it. You showed great improvement from your first match with her, that's for sure. I say the mauling of Mountain Fiji was no fluke! Claire should get back on track next bout. Edit: And now that I know that someone is actually playing the women's side of things, I regret not putting in Moolah's traveling fed as I had originally intended. I figured it would at least be another alternative -- besides going to Japan, that is.

A few days later, McLane called Claire. He was interested in a series of bouts between her and the California Doll, to see if she could hang with one of the better wrestlers for a sustained period of time. Claire argued that she'd far rather get her hands on Tina Ferrari again, but McLane pointed out that she'd been comprehensively beaten twice and the fans might not be too interested in seeing a one-sided rivalry continue. Claire fumed as he spoke, but agreed to take on Doll in a few bouts. Apart from anything else, if she could soundly beat her, then she'd be in a good position to demand more matches against Tina. Next show, McLane announced it would be the first Claire/Doll match - and it would be 2/3 falls. Match 4 [I]Claire Maynard vs California Doll (2/3 falls)[/I] As the Doll warmed up in the ring, Claire charged at her, but Doll just laughed, and rolled to the outside, making Claire wait. Once the Doll got inside, however, Claire made her pay, grabbing a handful of hair and getting in a couple of bitch slaps, then a bodylsam. Putting a hammerlock on, Claire wailed away at her opponent' shoulder, then got another bodyslam. Dropping down to try the headbutt series, Claire missed it, and Doll got her with a DDT, then the running splash for two and three quarters. Slipping out of a sleeper hold, she hits a headbutt, then takes Doll down with a barrage of punches. Sitting on the Doll's back, Claire blasted away at her face with a series of hard shots, then hit a kick to the arm. A hard one to the head followed, and another to the back, then a slingshot into the corner. Jackie Stallone, on the outside, started to panic and leaped up to the apron, much to Claire's ire. As Claire complained, though, the Doll took advantage of the distraction to go for a German suplex, but Claire elbowed her way out of it. 2 forearms from Maynard, Jackie jumping onto the apron again, but even Sly's mother can't stop Claire from getting a bodyslam! Throat thrust is countered by a side headlock takedown from California Doll, but she misses a slingshot splash. Claire tries for a DDT, Stallone leaps up again, and Claire finally has enough, blasting the older woman to send her crashing to the floor. Picking Doll up, Claire hurls her to join her manager on the outside, then slides out herself. A series of headbutts on both women have them rolling around in pain, and Claire reaches for a chair... but Doll stops her from getting it. Back in the ring, Claire punches away at her opponent, and is in total control here. Elbow drop finds its mark, as does a women's spear! Claire follows up by spitting on Doll, much to the displeasure of the front rows, then shoves Doll's head between her legs - and gets a martinete!! The ref is furious, but doesn't quite disqualify Claire, merely giving her a stern warning. Claire gets a couple of headbutts, then a fury of punches. Stump piledriver follows, and is good for two and a half. Claire drives Doll into the corner with a hammerlock, then runs across the ring to smash Doll's head into the opposite turnbuckle. 2 headbutts from Claire, and then she takes a run up - and hits a leaping headbutt to send Doll slumping down! A bunch of punches from Claire, and surely it's only a matter of time? Smiling sadistically, she lifts Doll up - and hits another martinete!! The ref has had enough, and calls for the DQ, putting Doll 1-0 up - but can she capitalise? She gets a DDT, but misses a splash, and Claire gets 2 and a half from the resulting cover. Knee to the stomach from Claire, and even when Doll comes back, she misses a high cross body. Claire sits on her back, punching away, and finally draws blood! A series of headbutts make things worse for Doll, and then a slingshot - and Claire goes for the leaping headbutt again, only to crash into the turnbuckle as Doll slumps down! Another splash miss from Doll, and another two! And now Claire hits the DDT, and a kick to the back. More punches from Claire, and a face plant! Then the headbutt series again, and Doll is bleeding like a stuck pig! Somehow, Doll puts a sleeperhold on, but Claire fights out, and slaps and headbutts away at the Doll! More punches, including a big roundhouse, then a throat thrust! Can Claire finally put this girl away? Climbing up top, she jumps off with a double footed stomp - and gets the 3, levelling it at 1-1! As the two get to their feet, Doll hits a DDT, then misses another splash. Claire drapes a hand over her opponent... and this time, that's it!! 2-1 to Claire, and Doll practically has to be scraped off the mat, after a 45 minute classic brawl. (Match rating A*.)

[B]Month's big news[/B] Biggest of the month was a jump in size and a new TV show, Turbo, for MACW. They brought in a host of new signings, including Dick Murdoch, Adrian Adonis, Bob Backlund, Terry Gordy, Dusty Rhodes, Buzz Sawyer, and Skandor Akbar. The month ended with Ric Flair and Wahoo McDaniel teaming to beat the Briscoes for the NWA World Tag belts. several other feds also increased in size, noticeably both All Japan and New Japan. All Japan brought in Ricky Steamboat, British legend Les Thornton, Tiger Chung Lee, and American rising star Hulk Hogan, while the month saw an early title change as Mitsuhara Misawa beat Ashura Hada for the All-Asia belt. In New Japan, the only title change saw the WWF Junior Heavyweight belt move from Tiger Mask to Kuniaki Kobayashi. The World Wrestling Federation took a huge blow as Backlund quit for MACW while holding their main title. A quickly booked Jimmy Snuka/Don Muraco match for the vacated title saw the Superfly take the belt, and successfully defend against Sgt Slaughter and Sika at the following two cards. Apparently, the quick elevation of Snuka didn't go down well with everyone, as his former friend Roddy Piper slammed him on a radio show for getting a shot which other people deserved more. News from Britain of a possible future star, as 33 year old Virginia Cox, semi-famous as an amateur female rugby player, announced her desire to get into wrestling - a future GLOW girl? The following GLOW show saw the match Claire had been waiting for, as her and Matilda got another opportunity to take on the Beverley Hills Girls. This time, there would be no mistakes. Match 5 [I]Claire and Matilda vs Beverley Hills Girls[/I] Claire starts off with Ashley, punching and slapping away for a few minutes, all the time hurling abuse at Tina Ferrari on the outside. A quick tag to Matilda, who hits a few brutal forearms, then brings Claire right back in. Claire with a kick to the back, and a seated dropkick, then a slingshot to the corner. Ten punches in the corner, ein, zwei, drei... and a series of crossface blows. A hard right for Jackie Stallone as she leaps onto the apron, and Miss Maynard is on fire here! Matilda screaming at her to finish the girl off, but Claire is all eyes on Tina Ferrari here... and she's quite happy to let Cartier tag out. Ferrari dives in with a dropkick into the corner, then ten punches of her own. Claire comes back, though, with a bitch slap and a bodyslam, but misses an elbow drop. Ferrari gets an arm bar on, then drives a handstand knee into the arm, before driving her into the corner. Kangaroo dropkick follows... and a cover makes it 3-0 Tina, much to Claire's fury. Okay, she REALLY needs to learn how to capitalise on a decent showing.
