Wrestling at the Checkerdome Results Friday, Week 2, January, 1983
Wrestling at the Checkerdome Results Friday, Week 2, January, 1983 Location: The Checkerdome in St. Louis, Missouri Attendance: 2,000 Mike George vs. Roger Kirby vs. This was a quality match to start the show. It was a nice showing for each man, but Mike George showed improvement in his skills. He is getting better every match. Roger Kirby is always good, and he showed it tonight. This match didn't get the crowd riled up, but it didn't get them angry either. The announcing impoved the match, and it made the match come out better. Roger Kirby was able to plant a Piledriver on Mike George for the victory. Winner: Roger Kirby Overall: C Rufus R. Jones and Bob Brown vs. Crusher Ayala and Butch Reed vs. An above average tag team match, much like that of the Butch Reed and Roger Kirby versus Rufus R. Jones and Manny Fernandez match of last week's Wrestling at the Chase. Much like that match, this match had a mix of power and aerial attack. Butch Reed showed off his athletic ability with some great top-rope moves. Just like the match before it, this match fed off of the announcing quality by Larry Matysik and Joe Garagiola. The team of Butch Reed and Crusher Ayala got the win, after Butch Reed hit Bob Brown with a massive Top-Rope Clothesline. Winners: Crusher Ayala and Butch Reed Overall: C+ Buzz Tyler vs. Dewey Robertson vs. A rather good match for these two men. They put on a pretty decent match for the crowd, and this wasn't expected. This two average workers put on a good match for their standards. Buzz Tyler was showing some improvement in his technical skill department. The men traded holds, but they also traded some body slams, which made for a nice change of pace. Buzz Tyler got a much earned win over Dewey Robertson, when Dewey Robertson got hit with Buzz Tyler's Avalanche finisher. Winner: Buzz Tyler Overall: C+ Jerry Brown vs. Bob Sweetan An okay match for these two competitors. It could be seen as a let down for Bob Sweetan's standards. After his match with Crusher Blackwell, this match seemed to have made Bob Sweetan look a lot less impressive. Bob Sweetan was looking tired in the ring only after about five minutes. Bob Sweetan old body is looks to be getting to him, but he still was able to find a way to get the win over Jerry Brown. Bob Sweetan hit an incredible Piledriver for the win over Jerry Brown. Winner: Bob Sweetan Overall: C Bob Orton Jr. and Kim Duk vs. Manny Fernandez and Art Crews vs. This match was kind of sub-par for the people involved. The only man in this match that wasn't expected to do very well was Art Crews. Art Crews was put in this match to kind of expose the guy. Art Crews is one of lesser-known wrestlers in the St. Louis Wrestling Club, and this match showed how Art Crews would perform in front of a crowd. Bob Orton Jr. and Kim Duk got the victory in this one, when Bob Orton Jr. nailed Art Crews with a dominating Running Powerslam. Winners: Bob Orton Jr. and Kim Duk Overall: C Dick Murdoch vs. David Von Erich vs. This was a main event quality match, and this one was a show stealer. This was a fantastic match, and I'm not stressing fantastic. This could be a match of the year canidate. These two men worked their asses off to put on a incredible match. Both men showed some good effort to pick up the win, and it made for some good, old school competition. Dick Murdoch did get the victory in this one, though. Dick Murdoch hit David Von Erich with a Backdrop Suplex for the three count. Winner: Dick Murdoch Overall: A Kerry Von Erich vs. Ted DiBiase vs. If you thought the last match was good, then you will think this one was better. The youth of these two made the match a long, very intense match. These men are two of the best in the St. Louis Wrestling Club, and they showed the crowd that they are just that. Ted DiBiase is the perfect opponent for Kerry Von Erich, and he makes Kerry Von Erich look better in the ring. Kerry Von Erich is great in his own right, and he showed some improvement in this contest. Kerry Von Erich won this match with the Tornado Punch to become the number one contender for the NWA Missouri Heavyweight Title, currently held by Harley Race. Winner: Kerry Von Erich Overall: A Overall Rating: B+
These two men are big, powerful wrestlers, and it showed in this match. Crusher Ayala showcases more a impactful power moveset, but Bob Brown shows off a technically based moveset. The match was helped by the commentating, which may make the match come out better on television. Bob Brown was showing his stamina weakness, but he got the win on Crusher Ayala, when he hit the Bulldog. Winner: Bob Brown Overall: C Dewey Robertson and Jerry Brown vs. Mike George and Manny Fernandez vs. The St. Louis Wrestling Club is looking to be making a staple in tag team wrestling. This is once again another above average tag team match. These men put on a pretty decent match together, and it showed in this one. This match also was aided by the great commentating from Larry Matysik and Joe Garagiola. The team of Mike George and Manny Fernandez got the win, after Manny Fernandez hit Jerry Brown with the Flying Cross Chop. Winners: Mike George and Manny Fernandez Overall: C+ Kim Duk vs. Bob Sweetan vs. This is one of those big man matches that fans dream about, but this sure wasn't a dream match. This was a fairly back and forth affair that had it's share of power moves. The rather mobile, Kim Duk, seemed to be able to run circles around the tiring Bob Sweetan. Kim Duk got the victory over Bob Sweetan, when Kim Duk nailed a Front Suplex on Bob Sweetan. Winner: Kim Duk Overall: C Rufus R. Roger Kirby and Butch Reed are gaining experience with eachother, and they have formed kind of an alliance. This match wasn't the greatest in the world, but it was very passable. This match was a good lead in for the main event. Butch Reed and Roger Kirby got a dominating win over Rufus R. Jones and Buzz Tyler, when Roger Kirby hit a Piledriver on Rufus R. Jones. Winners: Butch Reed and Roger Kirby Overall: C+ Kerry Von Erich vs. Crusher Blackwell vs. This was a good match, but it was lacking something. Some may say this match was lacking in-ring smarts. Both of these men aren't the most gifted in the psychological department, but they put on a pretty good match. Crusher Blackwell's size restrains him from going very long, and he showed that in this match. Kerry Von Erich got the win over Crusher Blackwell, after Kerry Von Erich hit the Tornado Punch. This means Kerry Von Erich retains the number one contendership of Harley Race's NWA Missouri Heavyweight Title. Winner: Kerry Von Erich Overall: B- Overall Rating: B-
Well I'm sure they did run angles, but their style is said to have been a pure wrestling oriented show. This means that only rare interviews or angles were included. Now in real life I'm sure there was angles in telecasts, but for the sake of being successful in the game I can't really run angles.
