Hawaii Gridiron

Recommended Posts

I never expected a phone call about being a head coach for a Div I football team. I mean, I’d studied football often and even written a few articles, but coaching a team is something I’d never done. However, I was awakened one morning by the sound of my phone ringing. When I answered the voice on the other end was Perry McMullen, Athletic Director for the University of Hawaii. They’d lost their coach just weeks before the season started and needed a new coach, so with little preparation, and no idea what I’d find, I collected my gear and found a flight out to the island paradise to take over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. The first thing I found out was that the team didn’t have high expectations for the next season. The board wanted a top 3 finish in the WAC, but no one seemed to think that the defense was very good. I found that a few players would be dominant at their positions, but there were no backups especially at linebacker and offensive tackle. I was going to have a difficult year ahead. I immediately ordered the team to upgrade its recruiting service for the season. I knew I’d return to using Gridiron after 2006, but having some better recruits might help keep the team going. Deciding on what kind of offense and defense to run didn’t take long. I had only one wide receiver with any experience, so I couldn’t go with a largely passing offense, but with no offensive tackles or fullback my only option would be to spread the ball around and try to grind out drives. I decided to stick with a balanced offense. Defense proved to be a bit more difficult, but since I had a few decent linemen and safeties I went with the 4-2-5. I didn’t want to stick with it after this first season, but I didn’t have enough good linebackers to use anything else. After that it was mostly working with the Athletic Director to set up a schedule. It took a few phone calls, but we finally had the following schedule set up. Bye At Houston At Illnois San Jose State Bye At Utah State New Mexico State At Idaho Boise State At Fresno State At Louisiana Tech At Army Nevada Bye At BYU

Week 1 No game, but too many players are on my academic probation list. I ordered most of them to spend considerable time in the study hall with the tutors I hired. Hopefully they will keep most players active. 8 starts were on the list, some with GPAs below 1.75. We also started preparing for the game at Houston, for which we were a 6 point favorite. They also didn’t play in week 1, so I had little idea of what to expect.

Week 10: Disaster struck as QB Mitch Walls threw 2 crucial interceptions and Fresno state was able to score 10 points in the 3rd quarter to win 23-17. Fresno State 6 7 10 0 23 Hawaii 10 7 0 0 17 Week 11 is against Louisiana Tech. They are only 1-7 so this will be a good break from our current struggles. Week 11: It wasn’t close as the Hawaii Warriors finally put together a complete game winning 41-6 Hawaii 14 10 0 17 41 Louisiana Tech 0 3 0 3 6 Week 12 will be at Army who are struggling through a 2-7 season WR David Baker – Suspended – GPA 1.82 Week 12: Army proved to be a tight game, but Hawaii won 20-17. My team now had the 6 wins they need to be bowl eligible. The team defense still ranks #13 in the country with linebacker David Cason having accumulated 8 sacks in the twelve games. Hawaii 0 3 3 14 20 Army 0 7 0 10 17 Week 13 will be against Nevada at him. QB Woody Holt will be visiting. He’s ranked 745 in the nation. We did learn that CB Deion Mehl was considered a finalist for the Gamebreaker award. However, there is a player at Boston College who had 2 more returns for touchdowns than Deion has pulled off so its unlikely that he’ll win the award. Week 13: another good win as Nevada went down 20-9. No game for week 14, but there is a final game against BYU (5-6) on week 15 Week 15: A great victory for the Warriors as the team won 19-17 on the power of 4 field goals. The team finishes 8-4 (5-3 in the WAC)

The WAC announced its all-conference team. The following Warriors find themselves listed. 1st team offense TE – Al Pittman (SR) OG – Scottie Hughes (SR) K – Marcus Bosley (SO) 1st team defense DE - Jed Williams (SO) 2nd team offense RB - Mike Smoot (JR) 2nd team defense ILB – David Cason (JR) CB - Deion Mehl (SO) CB - John Sanders (SR) We only managed a 5th place finish, despite the good finish. However, the 8-4 finish was enough to get us invited to the Honolulu Bowl against Marshall (6-5). Its nice to be able to stay in Hawaii for the bowl game. We should get a good audience. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 18. Out defense just was overwhelmed. Marshall put up 3 touchdowns in the first quarter and never looked back as they won 55-29.

Lost a little prestige due to the poor performance in the middle of the season, the board wasn’t happy and reduced my budget by $20,000. Hopefully that won’t hurt too much. I have 14 scholarships to spread around this season. And I know I need linebackers and offensive tackles. Fortunately, none of my underclassmen is thinking of going pro early. My offensive coordinator Marc Boylan has decided to move on. He was an extremely good coordinator, but I cannot afford his salary. I’ve opened talks with Eric Bouza. He isn’t good at developing offensive linemen, but he’s good at all other aspects of development, so he should help the team improve. I decided against going for transfers. There was no one available who really interested me.

Recruiting 2006 Great recruiting class for 2006, despite the low prestige. I had 14 scholarships and managed to use all of them to sign athletes. Going into the 2007 Season the board is looking for a top 3 finish in the conference. The recruiting class is being rated only #77 in the nation. Looking over the roster I’m going to go with a Run’n’gun offense and a 4-2-5 defense. I’m a bit nervous about the offense, but it should work with the players I have. Schedule is set. Houston Illinois Connecticut New Mexico State Bye At Nevada Utah State Idaho Bye Louisiana Tech At Fresno State At San Jose State At Boise State Bye Tulane

Week 1 – home against Houston Not much offense, but the team moved the ball when it counted and won 28-7. Week 2 – home against Illinois The offense took off and put up 441 yards, despite 2 interceptions. Final score was 30-20 for Hawaii. Injury and academic bugs have struck. Starting RG is out with a torn hamstring, and 2 starters have managed to get themselves suspended for GPA issues (Dante Stallworth SS, David Baker WR) Week 3 – home against Connecticut QB’s threw 2 interceptiosn, but the bigger problem was the complete lack of a running game. Final score was 37-17 for Connecticut. Week 4 – home against New Mexico State 3 interceptions from the QB. It doesn’t help that my starting QB is out with a broken clavicle, and his back up isn’t as accurate. However, the team used an interception of our own returned 93 yards for a TD to open a 10-0 lead and went on to win 27-17. So far the defense has been much better than the offense. Week 5 – Bye Hopefully some injuried players will heal up. Week 6 – away against Nevada (1-3) Against 3 interceptions were thrown by Hawaii QBs. But the team took advantage of every opportunity to win 30-7. 4 Nevada fumbles definitely helped. Week 7 – Home against Utah State (3-3) Finally the let down that’s been coming for a while. Only 1 interception thrown, but too many missed third downs (4 of 16 converted). Utah gets a 31-19 win. Week 8 – Home against Idaho (4-2) The offense still isn’t there, but the defense kept it close and there was enough scoring to pull out the win 17-14 Week 9 – Bye week Much needed as injuries have built up. Week 10 – Home against Louisiana Tech (3-4) On paper Louisiana looked dangerous, especially wiwth how poorly the team has played, but 2 punt returns for touchdowns and 7 made fieldgoals will make up for no offense. And help create a 37-13 win. Week 11 – away against Fresno State (5-4) Fresno has outplayed most teams in the conference, but hasn’t put the points on the scoreboard. I’d already figured out that my team was playing poorly and this game was proof as the offense went 1-13 on third down and the team lost 44-16 Week 12 – away against San Jose State (7-3) Earlier this season SJSU put up 72 points in a game, and with the Hawaii team looking poor on both sides of the ball I expected a loss. The defense did come to play though and the final score was a close 12-3 for SJSU Week 13 – away at Boise State (8-1) A desperately needed conference win wasn’t to be and the team lost 22-10. There just was no offense again. Week 14 – bye Week 15 – home against Tulane (5-5) A much needed win to finish the season 7-5 as Hawaii pulls out a 31-24 victory. Interceptions were again a problem, but the team managed to run the football for the first game in a while. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know that I went away from posting the stats, but I was putting those in by typing them by hand and it just became too difficult. sorry

At least we pulled off another visit to the Honolulu Bowl – against Marshall (7-4) However. We can’t just quite put together a good game and lost 49-13. 3 interceptions again. Fired OC Eric Bouza. The team was just horrible on offense. Brought in Kenny Abraham, he’s 45 years old and likes Smash Mouth football. This hopefully will help bring the offense to life. Only had 14 scholarships again so didn’t go after too many transfers. Did talk to ILB Marty Welch a run stopping ILB who wanted more playing time. He had been the #822 player in high school last year.
how do you get real player names in the game?
It is a custom file that I created. I have all of the award winners from this season as well as all of the All Americans and I did a few of the complete teams such as Notre Dame. I also added alot of the stat leaders which is how Hawaii had their "real" QB in my league.
