Grandpa and I walked into the conference room at 9am sharp Friday morning. The 80th floor view of midtown Manhattan was was breathtaking -- it was a crisp, bright morning with hardly a cloud in the sky. The assistant that escorted us to the conference room excused herself, letting us know that the people that we were meeting would be along shortly, and that she would be happy to get us whatever we wanted. They had already sprung for a very nice breakfast before we came up, so Grandpa politely declined, and I asked for some coffee with extra cream and sugar. She came back shortly with my coffee, just the way I liked it. "Hrmph," Grandpa muttered. "I still don't know why these folks insisted on doing this here. We need to be in Montreal, getting ready for the pay-per-view." "You know as well as I do, Grandpa, that Aunt Vickie has things well in hand, and if she didn't, you would be the first person she'd call." Grandpa sighed. "I suppose. But I'd still rather be there. I still love getting ready for the show, getting all the plans in place, getting everything just so and knowing that we're going to give the fans something they'll enjoy." I smiled as I sipped my coffee. "It's so cool to see that you still love what you do, even after all this time." "That's the secret, my dear. If you don't love what you do, you won't put your whole heart into it, and you won't get what you deserve from it. Even when you're down, angry, and hurting, it's that love that makes the bad times bearable, and the good times great. If you're willing to walk away from it just because things aren't going the way you want, then it isn't what you were meant to do. Find what you love, and never let go." I stood there for a moment and let his words sink in. Before I could dwell on them too much, the door opened and two men in designer suits came in. "Mr. Stone, Miss Stone, I'm pleased to finally meet both of you! After so many emails and conference calls it's good to have you here face to face." Jared Barnes, the executive producer we had been working with for the past two weeks, shook our hands. "This is Jason O'Malley, the legal negotiator we've been working with on our end, and he has all the paperwork ready for signatures. After we get that taken care of, we'll head down to the studio and get you ready for the on-air interview on the noon edition of Sports News Now." I felt like we were closing a mortgage, there were so many places for Grandpa to sign -- he was getting a bit annoyed at the cramping in his hand from holding the pen for so long! After about an hour, we were finished with the papers, and the lawyer took them to be countersigned and have copies made for us to keep. "Jared," Grandpa said as the door closed behind the departing lawyer, "you've been very hospitable and I'm really looking forward to working with you. But we really could have done the interview via satellite and we could have faxed the contracts back and forth. I have a major show to put on in less than 48 hours in Montreal. Why did you insist on having us come to GNN headquarters?" Jared took a drink from his bottle of Evian. "I know this isn't the best timing for you, and I'm very appreciative of you taking time to come down. I really did want to meet you face to face, and have a chance to talk with you without a corresponding phone or email trail." I raised my eyebrow. Jared continued. "I championed this project from the very first time I saw your proposal. I've been a fan of yours since I was a little kid in Detroit watching CWF on TV. Heck, I saw more CWF than anything else growing up. I genuinely believe you have the best product in North American wrestling and this is a real chance to give you the production values and the US exposure you deserve, not an after-midnight slot on a second tier network." "All that aside, this is a hell of a risk for me professionally. GNN has been TCW's flagship network for a good long while now, and you saw the news last week that they're adding another show. That means GNN will have six primetime hours of wrestling through the week. Your numbers are going to have to be trending positive from the very start to even survive the entire run, much less renewing. Tommy Cornell will use every connection he has here to not let you keep a foothold in our schedule, and the only thing that can protect you against the politics is ratings." Grandpa nodded. "You won't be disappointed, Jared. I promise you that." Jared smiled. "I have no doubt. Now let's get you down to the studio and into makeup. We'll get you back to Montreal in time for dinner." GNN Total Sports is proud to announce that NOTBPW Championship Wrestling is coming to GNN! Of course, they're not partners tonight, but rather opponents in their quest to be that first champion! Tommy London: They've got a lot more to worry about than each other, though! OOC: Sorry that last writeup took so long to get up -- I'm on a new project at work that has me travelling Sunday through Thursday. I took my laptop with me, and I chipped away at the writeup in the evenings, but I couldn't get it finished until tonight. The pace may slow down a bit (though it was fairly slow to start with :p ), but it is not dead by a long ways -- the game is out to April, and there's still a lot of backstory with JeriLynn and company. Thanks for reading this far!

Duane reached over to the remote and turned the TV off. He was soaking in the jacuzzi tub at the house, letting the heat soak into his aching muscles. Taking advantage of the extra couple of days off since he wasn't booked for Clash Classic, he had decided to stay home so as to better care for his fatigued body. The show was a good one, up to family standards with high quality matches. For the most part he liked how things had gone in the past few weeks since JeriLynn had come back from college. Duane probably knew her better than either of her other uncles; he and Victoria were very close as a result of their being less than a year apart in age(*), and JeriLynn spent a lot of time following Victoria around. It gave Duane a sense of pride to see her come into the business and fit in so quickly, even though it still felt a little odd having her run his bookings. As Duane was drying off, he heard his cell phone chirp on the bathroom counter. He picked it up, recognized the number, and flipped it open. "Hello?" "Hi Duane, it's Kirk." "Well hey there. How you doin'?" "To be honest, miserable." "Ah. I heard you were in the doghouse." "I figured as much. Look, I know this is awkward, but I really need some advice, and of all the possibilities, I feel most comfortable approaching you." Duane paused. "Don't know how good any advice I can give is, really. I've managed to make a mess out of almost every relationship I've been in, and I have the alimony payments to prove it. But I can at least listen." So over the next few minutes, Kirk recounted the events that led up to their fight the previous week. Kirk concluded by saying, "I just don't understand why she's so upset with me. I know she didn't deserve the crap my mom said to her, and had I known they were coming, I would have made sure she didn't have to go through that and had her meet me after they'd gone." Duane nodded. The weird thing was that he actually could give Kirk some decent advice after all; he had learned this lesson the hard way in his divorce. "OK. Before I say anything, I need a straight answer out of you. How do you really feel about her?" "Duane, I've never felt this way about anyone before. Yeah, I know I'm 18 and it's a freaking cliche. But I don't want to screw this up and it's scaring me to death that I am." "Fair enough. Now, here's what you're missing..." --- (*) Interestingly enough, in the database Duane Stone's birthdate is October 1974, and Victoria Stone's birthdate is February 1975, but they are supposed to be brother and sister.

Larry Wood gives Leo Davis the CWWF Book In a move that surprised many industry insiders, new CWWF owner Larry Wood has hired Leo Davis as head booker for the fledgling women's promotion in central Canada. The 39-year old Davis, whose wrestling career was considered mediocre at best and whose aptitude for booking is completely untested, seems an odd choice for Wood. The CWWF roster is developing nicely, with key signings including Joanne Rodruigez, Cherry Bomb, Wanda Fish, and Raven Nightfall. The roster-building process has not gone without some disappointments for Wood, however; after agreeing in principle to verbal terms with NOTBPW Women's Champion Melody Cuthill, Cuthill was offered a written contract with NOTBPW, which she signed, thereby negating her PPA terms with CWWF before she could even work one show with them. When asked for comment, NOTBPW spokesperson JeriLynn Stone (daughter of Jeremy Stone) said, "We were surprised that Larry, who our family has a great deal of respect for, didn't at least give us a courtesy call before contacting Melody. While it's certainly not a requirement for the business, given Larry's long tenure with us and the positive relationship our family and Larry have had over the years, we'd hoped that the NOTBPW women's division and CWWF could be partners in raising the visibility of athletic women's wrestling in Canada and the States." CWWF, however, seems intent on going it alone, as they have rebuffed NOTBPW's offers of a working relationship. Sources close to Wood suggest that he was unhappy with the abrupt dismissal of his close friend and former tag team partner Alysian Scottsfield this past week, and that has played a factor in CWWF's reluctance to partner with Canada's leading wrestling company.

The flight from Montreal to Saskatoon Sunday night was mostly uneventful. We settled into the hotel, and Grandpa and I spent most of Monday morning and afternoon on the phone -- even with the GNN contract for Championship Wrestling locked, we were still in negotiations with other networks to see if we could get a second show in play. The arena preparations were mostly complete once Grandpa and I got there three hours before showtime. Aunt Victoria had run the walkthrough already and so I went backstage to grab a bite to eat and put my stuff in the women's locker room. I stepped into the room and looked for an empty space for my bag. The lockers were already lableled, so I found my locker and opened the door to put my stuff in. There, hanging from the center hook, was a single rose on a thread. The note attached to the flower said: "I think I figured it out. Can we talk now?"
NOTBPW Presents -- Mat Masters Tour -- Monday, Week 3, February 2007 Nathan Coleman defeated Rolling Johnny Stones in 7:58 by pinfall with a Pioneer Twist. I paced nervously at the back entrance at Pengrowth Place. The show had wrapped about an hour ago, and I was waiting for Kirk to emerge from the locker room so we could go to the airfield and get him back to Saint Knud. We had not spoken, emailed or IM'd for the entire ten days since I left Minnesota. To be honest, it was tearing me up -- I was still angry, but the emptiness of not having him to talk with was miserable. Work kept the pain from completely consuming me, and I had spent some time crying on Aunt Vickie's shoulder. I was so grateful to have her around; whether she realized it or not, in the years since my mother had died she had almost completely transformed from someone I admired and respected into a true mother figure. "JeriLynn?" I turned and saw him; my breath caught in my throat. My mind was fighting a war with my body for control; it took every ounce of self-control to keep from throwing myself at him, either in anger or in passion, or perhaps a bit of both. "Hey there. You have all your things? We should head to the airfield." "Yeah, everything's here. You gonna come down on the plane with me?" There was nothing I wanted to do more at that point, and had let Dad and Grandpa know that I might indeed do so before coming to Toronto for the Championship Wrestling show. Hoping my voice would not betray me, I replied flatly, "That all depends on you. Let's get going." I'd arranged for a car service to the airport just after I'd gotten Kirk's note. The ride there was mostly silent; I really didn't want to get into an emotional discussion in the car since we weren't alone. I distracted myself by asking Kirk about random details of life back on campus, how the basketball team was doing, little things like that. I hadn't arranged for a way to take me back into the city if the conversation didn't go the way I was hoping it would. We got to the business aviation terminal. I tipped the driver 25 bucks and asked if he'd be willing to stay for a few minutes, just in case I had to go back, and he said he'd be willing to do that, and if I didn't come back in 15 minutes, he'd take off, which I considered more than fair. We walked into the terminal and sat on a bench in the corner of the atrium. "You have one chance to get this right, Kirk." "OK. You kept asking me why you were mad, and I kept wanting to believe you weren't mad at ME, that it wasn't my fault, that you were mad at my parents for how they treated you. But it was my fault that you were put in that position in the first place, because I wasn't being honest with you or them. I didn't want to discuss my relationship with my parents, because I was afraid you wouldn't want to be with me long-term if you knew. But if I really do want a long-term relationship, I have to be willing to show you everything about me, good and bad. I can't keep secrets from you, and I can't put you in a position where you get hurt because I'm unwilling to admit my shortcomings. I just wanted to apologize, get it over with, put it past us, because I hate fighting. I can't stand to have people mad at me. Having you mad at me is killing me. I promise I won't keep this kind of stuff from you anymore, and I won't let you be put in a position like you were in last week again." My heart was pounding. His response was actually more that I expected -- where the hell does an 18-year-old come up with this kind of depth? "You mean it? You want a long-term relationship?" "JeriLynn, you're the best thing that's ever happened to me. I can't imagine being with anyone else. You've done so much for me in the past few months. I love being with you and I don't want to lose that." "I don't want to lose it either. Come on, let's go find our pilot and get you back to campus. We've got some catching up to do..."

Back in the locker room, with an icepack taped to my aching shoulder, I checked the notbpw.ca site to make sure the night's results got posted. I was most pleased to see that they were in a timely fashion. The website was one of the things I insisted get an overhaul as part of my business plan, knowing it was something that Grandpa really hadn't had the company put a lot of time into -- to be honest, we didn't have too much of an IT department. So I outsourced the website, along with additional graphic arts work, to a small firm called Payne and Associates. Without doubt, Payne had exceeded all my expectations. That Quest for the Cup! banner looked so spiff on the website, as did our new TV logos. These are the kind of details you have to pay attention to if you're going to grow a business and reach new markets, and we were well on the way to doing just that.

I was sitting in the kitchen with a cup of coffee and my laptop, checking out the news. I was enjoying the time at home; in just a few weeks the schedule would kick into high gear as we added the second television show to the mix. I was ready to take the fight to Cornell, Eisen and Vibert in their own backyards, but it was going to be a long, tough slog on the road. I hoped that I was up to the workload, both in the ring and backstage. To be honest it was kind of a slow news week, wrestling-wise. Cliff Anderson down at CZCW finally got his vacant Xtreme title put on someone -- Ultimate Phoenix beat Jimmy P and Matt Sparrow to get the belt in what was considered the match of the night for them. When I signed Chris Perkins (Insane Machine), he was holding the Xtreme belt and never had a chance to drop it. The only other title change in the news was over in Japan -- The Great Hisato won the World Level Universal title from Bairei Yasujiro in a triple threat match that also included The Incredible KOYAMA. Yasujiro had managed 12 successful title defenses in their current tour before dropping the belt to Hisato. Another interesting story came from WrestlingCircle.com -- Jessie Christian was actively seeking work again after a four-year hiatus. The former Southern Class Championship Wrestling star had been "disillusioned" with the business after SCCW folded in 2003. I briefly entertained the notion of giving him a call, and decided against it. I already had a new signing and an extension in the works, so I was content with where things stood on that front. The office line rang, which was being forwarded from the corporate offices. I walked into the next room and punched the speakerphone button. "JL Stone's office." "Mornin' JL, it's Nate," came the reply from Nathan Coleman. "I do declare, I like it when you use JL as your name, you sound downright Southern." Putting my best drawl on, I replied, "Well shoot, sugar, ain't you always told me that Southern is a state of mind?" Nathan laughed. "Don't tease this old hound, JL, I'm not sure I can take it! Anyway, just got an email from Stuart, he signed the papers and faxed them back to your office. He said he could be back on this side of the Pacific by next Wednesday." "Good news! I haven't gotten to the downtown office, but I'll make sure to get it countersigned today and have the travel arrangements made." "Sounds good. JeriLynn, I wanted to thank you for bringing Stuart on -- when I saw how well you guys took care of the tag teams, I knew that Stuart and I could help out. I'm glad you and yer pa and grandpa agree. Coleman and Ferdinand get to ride again!" "I think it will work out well, too. He actually came well recommended not only by you, but by Cliff, Jack, and Rav too. Even Shingen took time to email and recommend him. The tapes of your GCG tag title matches with Rav and Bali from a few months ago that we looked at were solid as well. It wasn't too hard a choice to make, really." "Well, I do appreciate it. I won't keep ya any longer, JL; I'll see ya in Saskatoon on Monday?" "You certainly will, Nate, Take care now." "You too, bye."

I like the way you use the 'House Show' to throw guys and gals together to find workers that work well together. I assume that you will transfer that knowledge into storylines in the future when the timing is right. As always, I am enjoying this take on NOTBPW. Keep up the good work 'JL' ;)

Outlaw: To be honest, I like this better than using house show monitors -- one, I get instant feedback, two, it helps me use all the workers on a big roster at least once a week, and three, it lets me use a 'B' lineup in areas where I am less popular and still come out with increases in popularity so I can target areas like western Canada and select territories in the US. Now when MotSC starts up, that means I'm booking three shows a week. That's a lot, but I'm to the point now where I have a pretty standard formula for booking a show so it takes less time than when I started. NOTBPW only lends itself to a few types of angles, so it's not like I have to go searching for ones to use. Yeah, it's a bit repetitive, but it gets me the results I want, and I can adjust the narrative so that it doesn't get overly stale. Appreciate the feedback!

Great minds must think alike as I do it also in Battlelines. The roster is pretty huge so I use "House Shows' to further younger or not as over talent along in areas where I'm not as popular in the same effect that you are doing it. Sometimes it screws things up though, hence the 'infamous' snow storm.

Oh man that was a great time. I'll try to get the show up by Thursday at the latest; I am on the road this week and next on business, but should have enough time to keep things moving.
