  1. Puts JDS at a bit of a disadvantage, dont ya think? Let's just say for arguments sake ;-) that it's Mir. Mir now has had two extra weeks of prepping for JDS when JDS can only really prep for Reem.

In these situations the fighters/managers will have been informed and told what possibilities to prep for. They wont change anything in their camps until Reem in 100% confirmed as out though - no point wasting time, disrupting the flow of camp and potentially bringing in/sending away sparring partners until its a lock.

  2. Another thing to remember is that Dana's "Mir vs Velasquez is happening" comment was more than likely a way to not make Overeem look any guiltier than he already is ahead of his hearing.

If they'd pulled him, the message would have clearly been one of guilt. There's the possibility that could then have influenced the outcome of his hearing. The UFC *wants* Overeem vs JDS to happen after all.

  3. @Brad: Are you serious about the K-1 events? Don't they have a torrent or something. A friend of mine had all the PRIDE matches on his HDD. Reminds me to backup mine on another one. Can't bear the thought. :p

Sadly yes :( I'm sure I'll be able to get the recent ones, and maybe the GP finals, but I literally had every regional and oldschool ever committed to film, lots of which were Japanese TV rips that I got off a mates computer in Japan. One of them has a fight that ends with a brick-breaking contest after two overtime rounds couldn't pick a winner. Seriously.

I've had some techies give me some tips, so hopefully all is not lost!!

  4. I want the Hunt fairytale to come true more than anyone...the problem will be that as good a story as it is, how many of the current UFC fan base actually know/care about it?

Looking at it from the average UFC/MMA fans eyes, this is just some dude with a terrible record who happened to win his last three fights. I doubt they know about/understand the significance of his wins over Cro Cop and Wand (aren't they those two old guys from Pride who keep getting smashed up?). As for his other wins...I'm willing to bet that there are people here who will have to look up Nishijima and TK to find out who they are/know the significance of those wins - no offence meant by that, just making the point that these are pretty obscure dudes unless you're a long time fan or massive geek like me :)

Other than that he's lost to Sean McCorckle, who just got knocked out by a guy whose training regimen consists of bicep-curling Big Macs. He lost to an underwhelming light heavyweight in Mousasi in 80 seconds, and was knocked out by a middleweight Melvin Manhoef who hasn't been able to get a decent win in K-1 or MMA since. Reem and Barnett handled him in minutes. He did well against Fedor, but most UFC fans consider Fedor a has-been/never was, if they even remember that fight at all.

Mark has been to some pretty dark places over the past few years, and not much of it has been in the press. I actually wonder how many people on the #rallyformarkhunt bandwagon actually know his story, other than that he lost a load of fights and now he's won some.

    Does anyone remember his blog?

  5. Why not Frank Mir? Velasquez just lost, Werdum just came back with one loss to Overeem and one win over Nelson... I can't think of anyone else. Mir should be the logical choice. I don't mind seeing Werdum taking the fight, but I can't see how this ends well for Werdum. My guess is, it's going to go like the his first fight against Dos Santos, or it's going to go down like his fight against Overeem recently.

Mir is absolutely the logical choice. People are only looking at other options because Dana said that Mir/Velasquez will go ahead.

It occurred to me yesterday during our podcast that Dana might have made that statement so as not to act before the commission hearing. Imagine if he announced Mir vs JDS, then the commission cleared Overeem of any wrong doing in two weeks time. Nightmare.

  6. So Mir vs Velasquez is on, which means that Hunt, Fedor or Hendo are getting a crack at the belt.

My money is on Hendo at this point.

Also, I saw one of the most awesome spectacles of my life at UCMMA this evening. Ppl that follow me on twitter may already know, but for those who don't, two words:

    Ultimate Ball.

  7. But one guy did fail the test. Just one. And it's not like it's the first surprise drug test in the history of sports.

1st surprise one in MMA, I believe. Not that that makes any difference...nobody *should* fail, in a perfect world. But we live in a world where the accepted number of top-shelf guys on juice is somewhere between "A large majority" and "Nearly all", hence my surprise that only one guy pee'd hot.

Also, just because only one of those guys got caught, doesn't mean that only one of them was juicing. Which is why we need random blood tests.

And then the real issue: Who else do you give a title shot to?

Nobody - Mir gets it 100%. My guess is that Mir gets slotted into the main event (very wise of his manager/PR guy to put a press release out stating that he'll take the fight if offered) and Werdum will be moved in to fight Cain.

  8. Overeem flunked his test. Could still theoretically fight, though.

I think there's more chance of me facing JDS for the title than Overeem at this point. I'd have fewer problems getting a licence, as least :-p

Right then, 'Mark Hunt for the title shot' Twitter campaign anyone? #HuntJDS146

  9. When a cute woman claims to be a dork or a nerd. That is just never the case. Do you think any of these women have ever thought about who would win in a fight Kirk or Picard?

Stop claiming to be something you are not!!!!:p

Not true in my experience. I worked at a video games company for three years, and we had some lovely ladies working there who were more geeky than the vast majority of guys. I'm talking dressing up and going to Star Trek conventions geeky. And not in a 'lets dress in slutty Star Trek fancy dress uniforms' kinda way...they would spend weeks painstakingly recreating outfits from the TV show from scratch.

One of them was even a model on that Suicide Girls website.

  10. but in all fairness its true about the cartoons and toys, todays G.I Joes are nothing compared to when i was a kid, same with the Transformer toys

In fairness with the toys, I got a £50 Optimus Prime a couple of years ago and a £120 Skywarp and they both take a big metal dump over their 80's equivalents :-)

Still hard pressed to find a toy that beats the Ninja Turtle blimp though!

  11. <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-username="damonster" data-cite="damonster" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="26660" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>why an IQ test?</div></blockquote><p> </p><p> When states don't do random testing, fighters know when they will be tested. You get tested when you apply for a licence or a renewal, you get tested if you're in a main event or title fight, there's a reasonable chance you get tested if you fight on a big card anyway. You have to give a sample before and after you fight, so you know an exact date that your pee has to be clean by. </p><p> </p><p> Every human body is different, but if you have the money you can get a lab to figure out to with a day or two when you will have successfully flushed, masked or cycled off whatever's in your body. Even if you're taking a stab in the dark, you can come off with a week or so to spare before the fight to be sure. </p><p> </p><p> Because of this, and because random testing is a rarity, you pretty much have to be a complete idiot to get caught. In MMA, just like in all walks of life, there are idiots, and they get caught. "My buddy came off the same time as me and he pee'd clean"...that's because your buddy is a different person, with a different metabolism, genius. </p><p> </p><p> So that's where the saying comes from...passing a scheduled pee test is essentially passing an IQ test, because you'd have to have a low IQ to fail one <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>
  12. <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-username="Fantabulous" data-cite="Fantabulous" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="26660" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Even if this was a completely random test they didn't know about in advance, I would think that any of the guys on something would already be wary of such testing, and you'd expect them to have the nous to figure that if all of the top fighters are going to be in one place, the odds favour a surprise test being called at such an event because it makes sense logistically to do so, and would take suitable precautions to avoid failing. Like I said, I don't expect anyone to fail, but anyone does only has themselves to blame because even if this test was a total surprise, common sense should have told them to take precautions.</div></blockquote><p> </p><p> I see what you mean...but there's nothing really to be wary off, as this has never happened before. This was a total surprise to everyone...these media days happen before every event and never has anyone been pulled for testing. Random testing was approved in Nevada a few years ago, but hasn't been conducted in recent financial years because the SAC budget wasn't sufficient. It was brought back in on the 1st of July 2011, and to my knowledge there hasn't been a single case of 'ambush' testing at any gathering of fighters. Random tests are normally done over the phone: you get a call and have 48 hrs to provide a sample.</p><p> </p><p> On the other hand you could be right: Overeem basically showed everyone the blueprint for getting around regular random testing last year. The 'my it's my agent's fault' thing seemed to work pretty well, and the commission never actually bothered to verify the things he said before passing judgement. It's possible that fighters at that level (who all have agents/handlers/managers/whatever) feel they can evade regular random testing, and are becoming canny about 'gatherings' like this one. </p><p> </p><p> The only thing I'd say against that is that if guys are using to recover faster in training, then this is the time they'd need to be on the gear. It's unlikely that they'd be able to go back on now, get any benefit and get off again a couple of weeks before the fight.</p>

Predict the Richter Scale rating of Dana's rage if one of them flunks. Not that I expect any of them to, but I almost want it to happen just for the fireworks. And on the outside chance someone fails, who gets the call to fill which potential slots? If Siva fails, I'd like to see Mark Hunt get the slot against Nelson.</div></blockquote><p> </p><p> It's not an IQ test if it's sprung on them at random <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> I love stuff like this; the idea of Keith Kizer popping up at random promo events and making guys pee in a cup without the chance to mask, cycle off or grab a prosthetic penis attached to a bag of their mate's clean pee (seriously - a dude once got caught by using the wrong colour...erm... implement). It's the way drug testing should be done.</p>
  14. I think you get a bit of 'back in my day' syndrome with everything. I'm always moaning about how amazing cartoons were when I was a kid (GI Joe, Transformers, Jase and the Wheeled Warriors, Centurions, Samurai Pizza Cats, Ninja Turtles etc) vs today (erm...Ben 10? That's a thing, right?).

Same goes for sweets, videogames, music, toys...it was all better 'back in the day' :)

  15. <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-username="1234" data-cite="1234" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="25823" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>It's not a horror film, but for a fun twist on the 'teens go camping' story I highly recommend 'Tucker & Dale vs. Evil'.<p> </p><p> I would recommend not watching the trailer though, as it is pretty much a summarry of the entire film (I hate it when trailers do that <img alt=":(" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/frown.png.e6b571745a30fe6a6f2e918994141a47.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />).</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Yeah, saw that last year actually, thought it was hilarious.</p>
  16. All fair points, BH. I can't dispute that. But where was Vitor's main training then? He looks a lot fresh than a lot of Brazilians of his time, with the exception of Anderson Silva (who may or may not be falling apart soon himself, if you listen to the rumors).

Vitor has trained all over the place. He spent a lot of his early career with Carlson Gracie, then BTT, which started as an offshoot of the Carlson Gracie Academy. He's spent a lot of time over the past few years at Xtreme Couture. He came to the US at a very young age, he never really had the Vale Tudo experience/training that a lot of Brazilian fighters of his era had.

Interesting fact: Belfort is more famous in Brazil for being married to TV star/model Joana Prado. I guess that makes him a Brazilian version of Alex Reid, albeit one that can actually fight, and whose wife/girlfriend is a million times hotter.

  17. That's a good point, but how did Vitor avoid those Wars? If you look at his record, especially during his time when his sister was kidnapped, he has a fair number of losses, while Wandy's more recent.

But just watched TUF Brazil-the mouthpiece falling out was hilarious. The other fighter was encouraging the other putting it in. Did they put the wrong mouth piece (each other's) in? Is that why he was reluctant?

Nah. Spitting your gum shield out is an old time-wasting trick. Often a referee will halt the action to get it washed out before it goes back in a fighters mouth, which can take a few seconds. I've even seen a corner 'drop' a gum shield outside the ring while they were washing it, just to give their guy an extra few seconds.

Godders was having none of it, the dude had already been warned for letting it hang out and Marc knew exactly what he was up to.

While we're on the subject, I think Marc is one of, if not the best, referee in MMA at the moment. The UK may still be some way behind the US in terms of our training, but in Marc, Leon Roberts and 'Granite' Grant Waterman, we're definitely up there when it comes to officiating.

  18. Looking at Vitor and Wandy, it's hard to believe they are the same age and started around the same time. It's a miracle to me, despite all Vitor has been through, he's still in pretty good shape, while Wandy is close to being done. It boggles my mind.

The fact that Vitor has had 30 pro MMA fights, while Wand has packed in nearly 50 into the same space of time, counts for a lot.

Another big thing is the way both guys trained over the years. It's no secret that the Chute Boxe Academy was not the most forgiving of places to train back when the likes of Wand, Pele and Ninja were in their primes. Their 'gym wars' are the stuff of legend; fighting - not sparring - to a knock out/TKO was common practise. Sure, it made animals out of a few of their guys, but at what cost? Shogun has struggled with injures since his early 20's. Wand is falling to bits, Pele (for me one of the greatest of all time) never even made it to the big show due in part to his injury problems.

I had a sit down with Ninja prior to his fight with Tom Watson last year...the guy is close to brain damage in my opinion. Slurred speech, nerve twitches, blinking eyes, inability to focus...all the signs are there.

Also (and I'm going to word this very carefully as I've already been done for liable once in the past 12 months, lol) consider Wand's fight schedule, physical appearance and brutal training regime back in his Pride days...then consider what someone might do to maintain and recover from such activities...see where I'm going?

  19. <p>Anyone watch TUF Brazil? Some quality fights to start the season. Couple of very undersized guys on there, but then so did the first few seasons of regular TUF. </p><p> </p><p>

You can watch it for free anywhere outside of Brazil <a href="http://www.ufc.com/tuf-brasil-episode-1" rel="external nofollow"><strong>here</strong></a>.</p><p> </p><p>

Last fight is a war. Highlight of the show for me was Marc Goddard 'encouraging' a fighter to put his gum shield back in...oh, and this...</p><p> </p><p>

    <span>http://cdn1.sbnation.com/entry_photo_images/3496939/WANDERLEI_large.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p>

Unfortunately the names of the four finalists are already out - released by a rival TV network. Oops.</p>

  20. <p>Just got back from a preview screening of The Cabin in the Woods. It was a really nice surprise; a decent horror-type movie that isn't just torture-porn or a by the numbers slasher flick. </p><p> </p><p>

Some good jumps, loads of laughs and a 'different' story than what we're used to with 'teens in a remote cabin' movies. Personally I've become jaded with recent horror films, so it was great to come out of the screening buzzing about what I'd just saw. </p><p> </p><p>

Can't really say much else about it without spoiling - suffice to say that the trailer gives *nothing* away and this is not the kind of movie you'll be expecting! Go watch!</p>

  21. <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-username="Target Practice" data-cite="Target Practice" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="26660" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Problem is, there's not many legitimate contenders at MW. Mark Munoz is coming back after surgery, but he's not really fought anyone noteworthy, Wandy is way past his prime, and Chris Weidman still needs a couple of fights. The only realistic challenger is Vitor Belfort, and we all saw what happened last time he fought Silva.<p> Perhaps if the UFC bring in Luke Rockhold or Hector Lombard (in fact, haven't there been a lot of rumours regards Lombard recently?), then they might get thrown in the mix, but right now, if (and it is an 'if') Bisping beats Boetsch and then one other (let's say Munoz, which I think is the logical matchup depending on when Munoz returns), there's unlikely to be many ahead of him.</p><p> </p><p> I don't disagree that if you lose in a number one contender's match that you should need at least a couple of wins before you get back there, but the truth of it is that there's a real shortage of legitimate contenders at Middleweight right now. There's plenty of prospects (Palhares, Stann, Weidman etc), but there's no-one you can look at and say 'that dude is two wins away from a title shot'.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> The variable here is Belfort. If he wins big against Wanderlei, a Silva-Belfort rematch would be a huge ticket seller in Brazil. </p><p> </p><p> With that said, Bisping has been told that he's going to be fighting for the title before the year is out. </p><p> </p><p> So either they expect Bisping and Silva to fight twice more this year (after their already scheduled bouts) or they've already got Bisping tabbed to fight the Silva/Belfort winner. Neither would surprise me. UFC brass felt that he beat Sonnen anyway, and it's not like they've never given a guy a title shot off the back of one win before.</p>
