He's still in rough shape physically. Seeing him go over Flair was a real shocker to me, particularly because he's pushed as an upper midcarder.

KVE, meanwhile, is a mess. More on that when I start posting the WCW shows leading to Starrcade.

Many attributed this to the continuing distraction of his drug problems.

THE MEGA POWERS DOMINATE: The alliance between Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage would be WWF’s main story for the rest of the year. Freed from the influence of Bobby Heenan, Andre the Giant turned face so that he could oppose the Mega Powers. He was joined by the likes of Ricky Steamboat and Harley Race in an ongoing war that raged across multiple events. Thanks to interference from Savage and the rest of Jimmy Hart’s cronies, Hogan managed to retain the World title through the end of the year.

REDECORATING THE FLOWER SHOP: In June, Adrian Adonis defeated Paul Orndorff to win the Intercontinental title. That would be the only title change after the events of WrestleMania V.

PIPER’S QUIET RETURN: Roddy Piper returned to the company in July but failed to recapture his spot as top heel with the Mega Powers running hot. Rumors persist that an icy relationship between Piper and Vince McMahon may have contributed to Piper’s diminished role. He began the year as the hottest star in wrestling and ended it jobbing to the Big Boss Man.

THE KING OF THE RING: Bob Orton Jr won the King of the Ring tournament for the second straight year, making sure the Kings Club continued on. He defeated Davey Boy Smith in the Finals, gaining some measure of revenge for WrestleMania IV. (Days later, the two had a falling out after Bockwinkel made a crack about being afraid to share a motel room with Snuka.) The AWA remains the U.S.’s 3rd most popular company behind WWF and WCW, largely thanks to their deal with ESPN. The roster features a dozen wrestlers over 40 and only four under 30. Those youngsters – Buzz Sawyer, One Man Gang, and the Rockers – might not be content waiting their turn forever.

FRITZ RETURNS: Using the money from Ted Turner’s buyout of WCWA, Fritz Von Erich leapt right back into the wrestling business, founding the USWA. Despite its talented roster, the Bill Watts booked promotion is seen as a distant #2 behind WWF. The mix of colorful characters with more old school NWA style performers has alienated various pockets of fans. Meanwhile, rumors persist that the backstage environment is ugly, with huge egos clashing and the party culture imported from WCWA not going over well with Turner’s idea of corporate professionalism.

HORSEMEN ON HOLD: Arn Anderson won the WCW US title in February, but a storyline where the Horsemen collect all the gold before revealing their mysterious fourth member was put on hold when Anderson broke his leg that summer.

BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE At August’s Hog Wild PPV, the three year reign of Ric Flair as NWA/WCW World Champion ended in a shocking upset by the Dynamite Kid. The dirt sheets insist that this victory was originally intended for Kerry Von Erich, but that Watts refused to put the Texas Tornado over until he cleaned up his act. Regardless, at Halloween Havoc, Dynamite Kid would lose the title to Flair friend Tully Blanchard.

What does that mean heading into Starrcade ’89….?

 8. Fleisch has a July 2019 mod where all the WWE brands are broken up into an alliance.
 9. I'd be a little concerned with AI Vince dumping the working agreement and going to war. You might be better off putting NXT UK into an alliance with WWE. I imagine you'd be running a product that doesn't rely overmuch on popularity, so the low pop might not hurt you too much. Could probably work but I'd do a quick test run first once you've made edits to see if any problems crop up.
 10. Haha well when the AI inevitably turns Dino heel again, this will 100% be the story line. "So many dead parrots!"
 11. I had to read about this on Wikipedia because I don't remember it AT ALL, but apparently Race did turn face in '89 and briefly feud with King Haku leading into the Rumble. He's never been injured in this world like in real life so he's still hanging around. What's even more bizarre is that the three most popular guys on the roster (Hogan, Macho, Piper) are all heels and Race isn't even the most popular face (that's Steamboat). And you joke about Bruno but he's still active in the game at 54! AI Vince makes some bizarre hires so I hope you didn't just curse me. Going to quit if I have Bruno main eventing WrestleMania VI.
 12. After booking that first SME, I simmed ahead with WCW and won't be picking back up with them until December 89 for Starrcade. It doesn't look like the AI got my memo on the Horsemen. It's unbelievable to me that I've come this far and no one has OD'd or even fallen into a wood chipper.
 13. THE ROAD TO WRESTLEMANIA WWF notes from January and February, 1989: Feels like this might be a good time to start posting title lineages:
 14. WCW SATURDAY NIGHT February, Week 1, 1989. SOME PROGRAMMING NOTES: When I add my user character to the game, I try to pick the preset archetype that best fits the person. For instance, with Vince, I use "Creative Leader." When I took over WCW playing as Ted Turner, I chose "Top Negotiator" and didn't think much of it. Turns out, that type only has a '1' in Creativity, so virtually all the gimmicks bombed on WCW's debut show. Oops! After I left the game to start simming again, AI Turner hired Bill Watts so I'm sure everything will turn out great! I'm not sure how much WCW I want to cover/play in this diary. Part of me wants to stick with just WWF so that I can advance into the future as quickly as possible. But I'm also drawn to a lot of the characters currently in WCW. We'll see. Updates will be slow the next couple weeks as I'm traveling for the holidays. Thanks for following, everybody! It's been a lot of fun so far.
 15. Definitely not something I would've done if the AI hadn't foisted it on me. It feels weird! I love where this discussion has gone. Piper's gone for 5 months of filming and he's Icon level pop (in spite of my booking him to feud with Kamala). I figure it's got to be a pretty big part! Him playing Richter is probably the right call, but now I can't stop imagining a world where he's Quaid.
 16. 1988: THE YEAR IN REVIEW As I progress along here, is there any information about the world you guys would like to know? Trying to cover the big events without getting too into the weeds, but I'm happy to fill in any gaps. NEXT: The first WCW Saturday Night!
 17. PREDICTIONS: smw88 -- 7/9 BHK1978 -- 7/9 joshbrady91 -- 6/9 EBEZA -- 6/9 Winners! Hit me up with who you'd like to see get an opportunity to shine in this cold wrestling world. NEXT: 1988 in review!

I should probably mention that I booked this WrestleMania before I decided to turn this into a diary and I'm pretty sure I didn't even pick the winner of the battle royal. It's completely left field and he hasn't appeared on a single Prime Time Wrestling. I WISH it was a Samoan.

 20. Thank you! I am about a year ahead right now and buddy that AI goes places. It's a lot of fun trying to produce a good show in four weeks after 11 months of absolute madness. It's made me throw up my hands at times. But then there are moments -- I'm thinking of two specific booking decisions that go down after WrestleMania IV -- that just work out perfectly.
