  1. Honestly as much as I did not want to see Mir/Lesnar III (for lots of reasons) if they were going to put Lesnar as an TUF coach for business (and it is a good business decision) they should have put him against Mir. It would have been like Tito/Ken or Rampage/Rashad with their legitimate hatred coming through. I was also really really looking forward to JDS vs. Cain as it would most likely be an awesome display of striking. Now we are either going to see Brock get blitzed by punches for a third straight time (Carwin and Cain) or witness his uber excited GnP (sarcasm) What other combination of coaches would you guys have wanted to see as I am struggling to find other good combos now that so much has changed this past month. I saw before Maynard vs. Edgar was a possibility (and a good one)
  2. talk about trumping Strikeforce's HW news. However I am impartial on it. Why? Because the winner gets a shot a Cain. Umm didn't Brock just get demolished by Cain? Guess this shows how short they are on immediate contenders since no one really has the momentum besides JDS. This should give them the ratings they need and with all of Lesnar's press they can plug the hell out of him and it. In other news, Pettis and Guida are in the works, which I LOVE? Why you ask? Because is the fight I said should happen with Maynard/Edgar 2, and hey, who doesn't love being right for once?
  3. Him being such a douche in round one made it that much better. Although the drop kick while holding onto the top rope was...well as interesting as Nagashima's transvestite cosplay.
  4. Yeah well I saw the "hype video" before the fight obviously and was like okay he's screwing around, then all the chicks came out (with no rhythm) and I'm like yeah yeah its Japanese culture, then he actually came out dressed like an anime chick and I'm like ummm.... WTF? I know anime is big but why a chick? Dress up as Cloud like the rest of us. At least he backs it up and stuff, it would be worse if it was some loser just trying to get attention. I like watching the Japanese events when they're on HDNET for those type of cultural differences as I love the way they make the events seem so much more traditional and important but that just caught me way off guard. edit: Gegards K-1 rules fight was also alot better than I thought it would be. Bet Kyotaro thought it would be an easy exhibition match. Do any of you guys know where I can stream good quality K-1 fights? I'm going to go search after I post this but figured you might know better than me. I've only watched a few online before and just read results usually to try and stay up to it but I want to see how Kyotaro did against Schilt being that much smaller.
  5. Right, I'm not saying he's "there" right now, but lets say he beats Werdum/Fedor/Barnett (just theory on the brackets and I can see him beating them) how can his stock NOT rise to the best outside outside the UFC and have people clamoring for him to fight there? BTW, for those that follow Japanese MMA (Daffanka) as we kind of got off Dynamite quickly WTF is with Nagashima dressing like Sailor Moon? I never followed him or really knew of him as I don't follow Japan or K-1 super close. However I was glad he made a fool out of Aoki who I despise and despise more after he made a joke of round 1.
  6. Well if all goes well we will get to see Overeem fight three times against legitimate MMA competitors this year. He has the body of a gorilla and some of, if not the best, pure striking for a HW. I know he has obviously lost in the past but with the current state I think he gives the best a run for their money and destroys the rest. I have a feeling he will end up being the new Fedor in that he will become the best HW outside of the UFC and not actually fight for them. He does not need their money and probably does not care about the "competition" aspect if he beats Fedor. After watching him at Dynamite!! he seems to have fully boughten into the "3 World HW titles" despite two of them meaning crap. If he gets through this Strikeforce tournament and keeps winning it will be hard to argue against him.
  7. <p>Unfortunately I see the tournament as more of a casket making process for Strikeforce rather than a huge jump in popularity. I posted before all the things that made 2010 a bad/dissapointing year for Strikeforce and this doesn't seem like the right way to start 2011. Is it that hard to just book solid fights people want to see? With Overeem's contract not lasting the whole thing, Barnett not even being licensed, and Fedors inactivity/contract, plus the uncertainty of tournament format as a whole, this is just ridiculous.</p><p> </p><p> But then again I'm sure Coker will prove us all wrong, remember how awesome that Middleweight tournament was in 2010?</p>
  8. <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-username="ampulator" data-cite="ampulator" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="26660" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>What, no GSP vs. Jake Shields?</div></blockquote><p> </p><p> They're "leaking" tody that this will be the main event.</p><p> </p><p> I read the Couture/Machida rumors as well but no site I found speculated it as the main event. Also reports say the fight is far from finalized as Couture will start filming The Expendables 2 soon which could create schedule problems for the 129 fight.</p><p> </p><p> UFC 125 was what I thought it would be, a solid card with the lack of star power. I won't get into the Maynard/Edgar debate as its pointless to argue something so close with no real evidence to promote either as a true winner.</p><p> </p><p> Stann knocking out Leben so early surprised me, I didn't necessarily think Leben would come in and crush him but didn't think Stann would be the one with a first round KO.</p><p> </p><p> Dissapointed in Diaz, I thought he could get a triangle choke off if the fight went to the ground. He tried then tried to late in the third to win the fight.</p><p> </p><p> A little surprised Gomi wasn't more aggressive. Guida is problematic of course but it seemed the plan was to catch Guida on the counter which I just didn't see happening with Guida's movement and tough skull</p><p> </p><p> Prelims were pretty good which worked out wel for the UFC as well, would be nice to be able to see 3 fights each time.</p>
  9. lol I was actually surprised with how often he just out muscled Thomson. There were a couple of times where I thought Thomson was going to turn it around and Kawajiri just used pure strength to control him. You don't see many foreign fighters pure out muscling American wresters/grapplers so thats what impressed me. What didn't impress me was Kawajiri's bedazzled shirt <img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/wink.png.686f06e511ee1fbf6bdc7d82f6831e53.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> I agree Melendez would be good as I don't think Melendez could hold Kawajiri down for 5 rounds relying on strength and wrestling.
  10. <p>I've only watched two of the matches this morning. I DVR'd it (no way in hell getting up at 4 am Eastern time to watch it) but they were showing it this morning when I got up so watched what I could. I watched Kawajiri outwrestle Thomson. Agree with the announcers about Kawajiri maybe having success against American lightweights because of his wrestling. I mean Aoki tapped him but we saw what happened when Aoki went against Melendez so maybe Kawajiri could do good in the states. I don't know, we'll see. </p><p> </p><p> Then Takaya beat Fernandes. Fernandes seemed really upset with the judging but I didn't think it was a robbery. Considering his last two wins came split I wouldn't complain when you finally lose one, he looked like the semi-long lay off affected him as well.</p>
  11. I want to watch the fights just for all the weird rule fights. Especially the Sapp fight.
  12. Then he would be the perfect heel. If he is considering going back, he may figure hey, if I suck it up, wrestle once a month at the PPV, don't go over seas, I may be able to do this for 2/3 years to make enough money to retire for the rest of my life. While the UFC has made him rich, think of all the money he has invested into his life and MMA. I'm sure most of you have seen his house and own gym, that ain't cheap. And there is no way everything is all paid off, even with his money. Maybe he realized MMA isn't as fun and safe as he thought it was and is worried if he loses a couple more fights he could be done terms of big money and the UFC. He probably thought he could just keep rolling over guys making millions. I don't buy it though, there is no way you just quit because you lost your second fight. Even if he went back to the WWE imagine all the crap the other guys would give him. He's still a competitive athlete down inside.
  13. I was a suggestion, not saying you were wrong I know currently it just says natural causes.
  14. There should be a reason of death instead of natural causes like, Phillip Outred died after a nasty battle with herpes.
  15. It is fine if you do not like it (I am actually impartial, and have gone back and forth) and I doubt this would change your opinion, but I just wanted to make the correction that it wouldn't lead to draws as in the case of ties you would go to the 3rd or 5th round to break the tie.
  16. Had one of the best MMA discussions recently with a group of people and thought I would test the waters here one topic at a time. Keep in mind I don't agree/disagree on the issues the same so don't attack me these just came up with a group of 10 people that actually know something (unlike the 45 year old fat Tapout guy at the bar for the UFC fight saying Chuck is still the champion) First is changing the amount of rounds in MMA to either two or four (or of course disagree completely and keep it at 3), the goal behind it is to promote finishes/ more action and to promote more competitive later rounds. The argument for having two round fights is fighters could go more all out not having to conserve energy for the 3rd round giving not necessarily more finishes but more exciting fights especially with the larger weight classes. It is also to try to prevent boring third rounds when a fighter knows he is up 2-0 and plays it safe leading to the boos and such. Since even if a fighter clearly won the first round, he could lose the second and go to a sudden death third round, ala TUF. Issue of course is not getting finishes in those first two rounds since they're shorter, or also not being satisfied with enough action in those first two rounds. The argument for the fourth round is too see more competitive action in general (such as 5 rounders for title fights) and also looks to help the "boring 3rd round" since once again even if a fighter is up 2-0, his opponent can come back and give us that bonus 5th round. This could also lead to more finishes giving fighters that extra round but of course can lead to less action due to gassing and if a fighter wins the first 3 rounds we would be back to a boring round issue in the fourth. In favor of either change or keep it the same at 3?
  17. Here's a thought, should Henderson face the Edgar/Maynard loser? Both fighters would be coming off a loss you get the guaranteed momentum boost to one of them. Or would you rather just see Henderson face Stevenson or some other UFC lightweight coming off a loss? By the way I def. see either causing trouble in the UFC. I liked Henderson for his energy and Pettis matched it. It will be interesting if Maynard wins since he is a much slower and methodical fighter going against Pettis who also demonstrated a great ground game.
  18. OH MY GOSH ANTHONY PETTIS! ARE YOU KIDDING!? THAT KICK OFF THE FENCE MADE MY JAW DROP!!! Seriously though what an amazing fight and I can't believe that kick actually landed, its one thing to try it but to actually hit it clean. Man both guys are tough as nails and should have been finished numerous times. Def. looking forward to some future UFC match ups. I am dissapointed Henderson lost since I've loved watching him fight but Pettis deserved it.
  19. I actually just read this before coming to GDS and have been following it. It's pretty awful and I hope it doesn't turn into a big black eye. If what Buentello says is true, I almost want to believe the promoter himself that it wasn't his fault otherwise why was he in his hotel room and not bolting somewhere? If you just ripped off 24 fighters (plus all the staff and arena) why would you still be in the hotel everyone was staying at? Unfortunately since its international it will probably be hard to get real money out of it, especially since I'm assuming these guys didn't sign legal documents for the fight. I will probably take heat on this but some of those guys should have known better and let their greed get the better of them. An upstart promotion, with a promoter who has a shady reputation according to Winkelijohn, promising close to UFC pay, in a foreign non-regulated country. How could things possibly go wrong? I feel bad for anyone needing medical attention following the fight and now having no extra cash to help with it. I understand regional shows do not pay close to what guys like Jardine were getting with the UFC but they should know better to take less money and fight for a legitimate promotion. They are just lucky no one got seriously injured since there was no medical staff.
  20. I know alot of people even on here were saying Sonnen and I read the recent article earlier this week that said he would have to apply for a different license to be a coach (much like a cornerman's) which could cause problems with his CSAC since once his suspension was down to six everyone (including myself) was just like "oh okay now he can fight after the show" with giving much thought to if he would be licensed to actually coach the show, too bad as I might have actually watched, this past season was the first season I didn't watch a single episode of, too real worldy now, at least before they showed you more training and fight stuff and had more qualified fighters
  21. I actually think Fitch beats Shields. I like the GSP/Shields from a selling aspect but I've watched each Shields fight since the Daley fight and never really been impressed. The Hendo fight was good for him but he was just about KO'd in round 1 and lets be real here, its a 40 year old Hendo he beat that struggled to cut down to 185. I remember watching the Daley fight before I knew who either one really was thinking "Man why hasn't he submitted the british guy yet?" I just really don't see what he would bring to the table that would beat Fitch. Wrestling? Fitch or even. Striking? Fitch using his striking quite effectively. Submit him? Possibly, but for a Gracie black belt Shields submission ability is far from impressive. The problem with Fitch is he doesn't really go for the finish at all. In 13 UFC victories he only has 4 finishes. And none of those are impressive unlike GSPs.Also he has somewhat slapped Dana in the face about not finishing or fighting Kos, while GSP apologizes for not finishing. While GSP is getting a rep for being a lack of a finiser he is alot more active and does alot more damage. Kos? Broken orbital bone that doctor wanted to stop until Herb stepped in. Hardy? CONSTANT submission attempts, people really don't give him (or Hardy) credit for that. Alves? He tore/injured his groin after 2nd round I believe (maybe 3rd) so he grinded it out. BJ Penn? Forced him to quit. Serra? The most brutal ground knee's I've seen to stop it. but look at his overall UFC career, he has 8 finishes in 15 appearances, a pretty good percentage.
  22. Yaaay finally someone said how Kos hasn't improved since 07! That bugged me alot in the hype up shows talking about how much he has improved, I'm like um how? He hasn't really fought anyone that great, his only impressive win as of late was against Anthony Johnson as I thought Johnson would KO him. And yeah his right hands were awful, did he even connect with GSP's gloves? GSP's movement made him look like Riddle in the 3rd round when he threw them
  23. I think you made pretty solid suggestions as well. I'll explain the Struve thinking a little bit, to start out I'm actually not really fan so I'm biased the other way however the HW title picture is very shaky at the moment. There are some very solid competitors but none that seem on the fast track to the title. Right now you have Cain vs. JDS, but then who? Lesnar on a loss, Carwin on a loss, Nog on a loss, Big Country on a loss, Mir has chance to get back into it if he beats Schaub but that wont be for a title, Schaub is on the rise but a win over Mir doesn't give him a title shot, this is why i think if Struve gets past his next opponent he could end up fighting one of the above for a shot at the champion simply because no one is on a roll like they were at the beginning of this year. Only reason other thing is I dont like the Alves Kos only because Kos is probably going to be out for awhile and Alves seems healthy and should be good to go before that but I like the thinking you had about setting up the division after GSP leaves like I mentioned. edit: How about John Howard vs. Anthony Johnson? That has KO of the night or FON all over it.
  24. Someone posted once about it before the celebrating issue started so in an effort to change topics... What do you think should happen to the Jets coach that tripped the player? While I admit it is extremely harsh I think they need to fire/ban him for a few reasons. The only reason he may not be fired is because the player wasn't more seriously hurt. 1) They might ban the camera guy from the NFL who taped for the Pats and Broncos and got caught twice that we know of. If you can get banned for this, intentionally hurting someone must be on it as well. 2) The NFL has gone on a huge "No We actually do care! (but play 18 games)" spree this year fining players for the helmet to helmet hits. If you crack down so much about "caring" and to me this is the most blatant worst of them all, you have to be harsh. 3) The player is very very lucky he isn't hurt seriously. What if he messed up his leg so bad and never recovered to his full potential ending his career? 4) Coaches should be treated worse than players. We have seen players do cheap hits and hard hits but they are actually IN the game. There is emotion there is contracts and lively hood on the line, and things can get out of control ON the field. however standing off to the side in a wind suit, where was this build up of emotion? This pay back hit? Also even as grown men your coaches still are supposed to pass along the knowledge of the game and life. so many coaches are role models and you do this. 5) The guy is clearly a moron with 2 remaining brain cells. This is 2010, there are dozens of active cameras now on a national televised game, and you do this? How the heck did this pass as a good idea? Any common sense would show you that a camera somewhere has it in their sight. 6) The real world comparison. Real world workers get into arguments and small scuffles all the time, everyone doesnt always get along and we do things to retaliate and get back. Spread a rumor, screw them up a bit maybe a small key of a car (im relating these to late hits, a punch in the helmet, an on field scuffle). but to me this was cutting the brakes on your fellow co-workers car only to see them crash on the highway. 8) What if a fan did this? What if a fan sneaked down onto the field and tripped the player. He would have spent the night in local jail most likely and been charged with the trespassing and possible assault charges since it hurt an almighty athlete. To me a strength and conditioning coach is much closer to being a fan in the game than a player who is on the field, in the heat of the moment, and retaliates. I know this may sound "old man and crotchety" but I actually DO care about the players safety and I don't see how you can let such a low blow move just slide with like a $50K fine on something that wasn't even related to on field play.
  25. So I like doing the "who should they fight next" and reading those articles on various MMA sites so lets do it here. GSP: Shields, I don't want to see the Silva fight just yet when they just brought in Shields. However if he beats Shields I think it is time for the Silva fight even if GSP has to move for good as he has suggested. I have no interest in GSP continually doing rematches with Fitch/Alves/Penn when the Silva fight is looming. Kos: Kind of tricky since he is going to be out for awhile after surgery so he probably wont fight anyone that is available soon. I think a Hardy fight would be good, two former contenders coming off losses, or maybe as John Howards one last shot, might work out to face Shields if GSP/Shields is in April since Kos could be out 6 months from surgery alone. I'm not a big fan of putting him up against a contender on a winning streak as I would want to see Kos get a win first. Struve: I think he def. needs to fight a bigger name. One Sherdog article had the Mitrione fight winner, which I think is below him. This is why I like the Kongo matchup. Coming off wins, European so put them on a Euro card, and is a test for both that could elevate Struve within a fight of a title shot and also test Kongo if he can get back to being a contender or live out his days as a journeyman. McCorkle: Honestly don't really care. I don't think anyone thought he was going to become HW champ so find another big charismatic HW and let them trash talk to garner some hype as thats about all he's good for. Jim Miller: People are throwing out George Sot. but hes already covered. He def. needs to fight a contender if he wants his shot so a Sean Sherk bout should do. Sherk was injured but should be ready in a while and is coming off his Dunham split decision and has former title holder name value. Beating him should be give him the momentum he needs. Oliveira: I like him but he made a dumb mistake and severely underestimated Millers ground game. If they want to continue his hype he needs a quality opponent, give him Joe Stevenson and if Daddy loses hes out. Stevenson: Just covered that. Danzig: Tyson Griffin should make for an exciting fight and while I dont like putting Danzig up against a 3 loss straight guy Griffin has 2 split decisions and has the public and Dana on his side. Alves: Give him Amir Sadollah, both coming off wins and a good stand up fight. I dont want to see Alves against Hardy as some have hinted as while it would be a good stand up fight Hardy is coming off two losses. This is a test for Amir to see if he is legit and sets Alves up a title shot if GSP beats Shields in April and drops the 170 belt to fight Silva. Dont know if thats how the UFC will do but it sets Alves up nicely for a top contender at the least. Howard: Somewhat already covered him, but as the Sherdog article said he's only 5'7 so he probably needs to cut down to 155 anyway to stay relevent otherwise he cant stay consistent at 170
