United States Pro-Wrestling: The Downward Spiral Continues (C-Verse)

United States Pro-Wrestling: The Downward Spiral Continues United States Pro-Wrestling was caught in a downward spiral. Their popularity had gone through the roof when Sam Strong took over, but after two seasons of American Wrestling showing live coast-to-coast it was quickly becoming apparent that they needed a change. Watching the same veterans mix it up in short bouts, week after week, was starting to wear thin. The rookies in their undercard just weren’t up to the task of breaking out as fast as Strong would like. Fans around the globe filled message boards and websites with vitriol about the travesty that was Giant Redwood behind the booking desk, though it was generally acknowledge that it was preferable to seeing him in the ring. The internet marks hated Redwood with a passion, but that was nothing compared to the bile that spewed out when Sam Strong announced that I’d be taking over as head booker and commissioner of USPW. Let’s be honest here: my name is Russ Vinzio, and you don’t like me. Sam Strong doesn’t like me either; he’s held a grudge every since the pinkie-lock of doom incident back in SFW when I stripped him of the title live on air. He hired me anyway – USPW needed someone to give it an edge, and I was the only guy going who’d take the job. _____________________________________________ New Years Day, 2007: Creative Meeting & Sam Strong’s office is like a goddamn shrine: title belts, photographs, an endless array of bandannas and torn t-shirts. The man likes to show off, and he’s not shy about his gimmick. Unfortunately the air-conditioning doesn’t do enough to combat the Florida heat. We’d been sitting across the table from one another, just staring and quiet, for a little over ten minutes now. It was going to be a tense kind of day. ‘Rule one,’ Strong says, ‘Don’t kill my promotion. We’re shedding fans, and I’m expecting you to stop that, kid. You’ve got a year to get us stable, and three years to get us to the point where we can compete with Dave, the DeColts and the Stones. If you don’t manage, I’ll be firing your butt so fast that the hatchet-job Eisen did on your career will seem pleasant.’ ‘That’s a big ask,’ I said. ‘Most of your roster won’t last three years before they retire.’ Sam Strong glared at me. How did the man keep his skin so orange? ‘Rule Two: No cracks about over-the-hill wrestlers where the locker room can hear you,’ Sam said. ‘These boys have done a good job, and they deserve a bit of respect. Rule Three: You’re here to mix things up, but you aren’t rewriting my damn company. We deliver old-school wrestling, and we deliver it well. You don’t get to change that, no matter how much you want to.’ ‘You wanted an edge,’ I said. ‘That means changes, somewhere along the line. I can’t give you edge if we don’t take some risks.’ ‘Outside the ring,’ Strong said. ‘You can do the weirdest damn promo’s you want outside the ring, but we keep things traditional inside the squared circle. That brings me to rule four, kid: No-one who can’t actually wrestle. I want a solid B- in the basics, or their out of here.’ I frowned at that. ‘What?” Strong said. ‘I’ve already made a few calls,’ I said. ‘Last night, after you hired me. Folks that will probably fit in nicely, but don’t have that level of polish.’ Two bronzed hands gripped the table, the knuckles going a pale orange as the stranglehold on the wood tightened. I’ll give Sam some credit; the anger never made it into his face. ‘Fine,’ he said. ‘Those offers stand, but from here on in-“ ‘-it’s your way or the highway, got it.’ Sam cracked a smile for the first time since the meeting started. ‘Glad you understand that, kid,’ he said. ‘So I’ll give you one last rule: I want fresh talent. Don’t hire anyone over the age of 35. We both know that age is part of the problem with this locker room, so I don’t want you compounding Redwoods mistakes. We’ve got all the established stars we need; you’re here to push the next generation into the limelight. Are we clear?’ ‘We’re clear.’ ‘Good,’ Sam said. ‘There’s a show in two days. Get out of my hair and go book it.’
OOC: I started this game with two main points of interest. The first was seeing whether I could get an Attitude-era-esque feel to filter into the decaying locker room of USPW (answer: no), the second was based around the somewhat rediculous requirements I got which tended to shape the direction I headed. The diary side of things was mostly an attempt to keep myself interested enough to see whether I could get through a full three years of game-time and achieve Strong's goals. And I'll be honest here: I don't have a good track record with diaries. I'll post haphazardly, the format will probably shift around as I figure out what I'm comfortable with, and the characters will be awkwardly inconsistent as I forget how I wrote them the last time I sat down to transcribe a chunk of game. Realistically, you should all just go re-read J Silvers USPW diary instead. It will be funnier, better written, and he actually turns USPW into a success. After the first few months of play, I'm fairly sure the main appeal of this one will be very similar to passers-by slowing down to look at a car wreck...
January, Week One News The USPW new blood initiative gets off to a great start, with Darryl Devine offered positions at both SFW and TCW along with a whole mess of indy companies. SFW seem to think that Jim Force will be a solid acquisition as well, although Jim is seriously considering whether or not he’s willing to give up the National Title at USPW for one last bite of the big-time cherry and we're debating whether or not we should be offering him more money to stay. Vinzio: My name is Russell Carmichael Vinzio, and I am here to save Pro Wrestling. For too long the festering sore that is USPW has been allowed to blight the landscape, creating a safe haven for past-their-prime wrestlers and no-talent wanna-be jobbers that have no hope of making it into the big leagues. It was quick, awkward to watch, and totally proved that two wrestlers with minimal talent should never be put in the ring together if they don’t have any chemistry. And these two don’t. Zilch. Al and his tag-team partner probably don’t have long in the promotion under the new regime; Lex gets a couple of shows to prove himself. Lex gets the win with a suplex off the top rope. I can’t actually hear you when you’re both shouting. Datsun and Valentine glare at one another. Just as Freddie goes to speak, Valentine shuts him off. Valentine: I want the Giant, Vinzio. I need the giant. Peter Valentine is the future of USPW, and it is a crime against God that he doesn’t have a belt around his weight. They say that you’re the man in charge now, and you seem like a smart guy. Surely you understand what the Valentine is saying? Datsun: Well, ain’t that a load of crap. If anyone’s getting a title shot around here, it’s going to be me. I’ve been bustin’ my hump for this company for years, and I beat every damn wrestler you put in my way. I worked hard here, and I want what’s comin’ to me. I want my shot at the USPW World Title. Valentine takes offence to that, and the two start another shouting match. The finish will surprise no-one keeping track of the latest news on the internet, but the casual fans hated it with a fiery passion. The one high-point of the match was the way the Demons worked together, with Anger doing a great job of hyping Spite from ringside and pulling his foot onto the bottom rope when Force looked like he was going to get the win. In the end Valentine is the one who gets the pinfall and assumes the mantle of the Number One Contender to the World Title. The match primary consisted of a loose brawl, with both men exchanging punches and chops without bothering to sell the other’s offence. Anger looked a little lost facing off against the Giant – he spent most of his career dominating opponents with his size, but USPW is full of really big palookas that know how to throw their weight around. Result: Bruce The Giant defeated Demon Anger in 12:20 by pinfall with a Giant Choke Slam. The internet rated us a D+ overall and we draw a rating of 3.98, so we continue to shed viewers that expect more from the name Sam Strong and continue to raise the ire of the network that expects more bang for its buck. It also appears that everyone is sick to death of seeing me on the screen, but what else is new?
The Savages still had the edge when it came to size and power, though, and the presence of Sheik Mustapha at ringside ended up making all the distance. And now I give you ours: Rhino Umaga. A young Samoan man wearing a leather jacket and jeans emerges from backstage. In a normal promotion he’d be huge, but by USPW standards he’s just another heavyweight and the crowd remains under-whelmed. Vinzio: This man is the most savvy, dangerous wrestler to ever emerge from Samoa. Trained by master marital artists in Japan, his fighting skills honed to a razors edge. This is no Samoan savage here to grunt and roar for your entertainment; he is a true professional that will annihilate anyone who stands in his way. He hit the Full Force, Umaga shook it off, then he sent Jim into the ropes long enough to nail him with the Rhino Charge. Devine tried to make the save, but couldn’t get there in time to break the three. Then he calls for a microphone. Vinzio: And now it’s time to talk about Freddie Datsun. Wanna-be world champion, loser of last-weeks number one contender’s match, and the first victim of the crowning jewel of the American Evolution. Datsun, tonight you face one of the most dangerous competitors to step into the squared circle. You face a man whose fists are registered as deadly weapons. You face a man who holds an unbeaten record of 56 wins by knock out in the underground fighting circuit. You face a man who has been rejected by the very pits of hell. A rope falls from the rafters of the room, and a man wearing a red-leather trench coat and a wrestling trunk with flame motifs up the side rappels from the ceiling. Bruce overpowers Doom, but the canny Corporal always had a counter whenever the Giant went for the choke slam. While things went back and forth for a while, the momentum swung Doom’s way when Bruce’s attention was captured by the sudden appearance of Peter Valentine at ringside. Doom hit a chop block that brought the bigger wrestler down, then pummeled Bruce with a quick sequence of forearm blows and punches to the head. While Doom couldn’t keep the champion down, it did leave the big man on spaghetti legs and gave the challenger control. The tide turned again when a groggy Bruce caught Doom in a thundering power bomb followed by a splash that almost flattened Doom into the mat. Doom was finished off with the traditional Giant Choke Slam and covered for the three. Result: Bruce The Giant defeated Corporal Doom in 7:56 by pinfall with a Giant Choke Slam. An improvement, but not enough to keep the networks happy, nor the jaded crowds that expect more from us. I curse the luck that says the first person our world champ has chemistry with is the guy leaving the company in 48 hours, but at least there’s some potential between Brimstone and Datsun.
Week Four News Corporal Doom takes his leave of the company, heading off to a new career in TCW. Mick Muscles signs a pay-per-appearance deal with GCG, which means we’ll lose him on nights when the shows clashes. I’ve started getting irate e-mails from Giant Redwood, bitching about the fact that he’s no longer in the main event and he’s no longer appearing on shows. I resist the urge to e-mail him back and say nasty things, though I do send his address to some spam merchants that ensure he’ll be getting advice on enlarging his penis from now until the end of his career. Grayson took it to the champion as best he could, using his high-flying offence to evade the Demon’s slow-paced brawling assault. In the end the number’s game became to much for him – Anger tripped him up at the ropes, Spite hit a lariat, and Spite finally got his opportunity to ground the high-flyer. He battered Grayson with a series of power-slams and uppercuts, but Grayson quickly regained the offence when Spite miss-timed a lariat and DJ could get a dropkick to the knees after rebounding off the ropes. Eventually the frustration got the better of the Demons, and Anger leapt into the ring with two chairs. The ref did his best to stop them from battering Grayson to a pulp, only to discover that DJ had ended up with Anger’s chair in the confusion. Spite and Anderson went for one another using the steel weapons, and the ref had no other option but calling for the DQ. Pretend that Sir Brady is a very small, very crazy bi-plane that thinks it’s a knight, and pretend that T-Rex is a very bemused King Kong who isn’t exactly bothered by the machine-gun fire sent his way. For the first seven minutes of this match, that’s exactly what this was like. Brady peppered T-Rex with punches and drop-kicks, and T-Rex would just take the shots without any apparent concern and swat at his opponent with slow-moving slaps. Things got serious when Sir Brady, desperate to actually get the monstrous T-Rex off his feet, nailed a series of dropkicks to the knee that eventually wore the bigger man down. T-Rex struggled to regain his feet as Brady used a series of locks and sweeps to keep him grounded, but Brady couldn’t keep the massive T-Rex on the mat long enough to score get a three-count. Both men started throwing hard strikes and kicks, eventually turning the match into an outright brawl. It ended when Brimstone sent Datsun over the top rope with a madman clothesline, giving Vinzio the space to kick Datsun in the injured ribs. Datsun got to his feet, livid with anger, and started laying into Vinzio with a series of hard rights. Brimstone appeared behind Datsun, catching Freddie’s arm on the backswing and dragging him away from Vinzio. The two wrestlers started brawling on the outside while a bleeding Vinzio lay on the floor, trading wild punches and kicks as they fought their way into the crowd. Nice. Interesting to see someone playing USPW essentially straight up (most of the other USPW feds have essentially blown up the roster and started over). I think this will be a challenge for you as a booker, but I like your writing style.

You're getting suprisinly good grades with the originals, great work! Sir Brady, Prince of Maryland... that's so.. so... weird, but great at the same. In other words, it's uspwesque in the right way. There's no clear contender upcoming for Bruce, I think Valetine gonna's get another shot while Datsun and Brimstone battle one more time for the #1 contendership. Or maybe you could get Redwood into jobbing for Bruce ;)

This meeting doesn’t get off to a good start. ‘We lost money,’ Sam said. I settled into my chair and smiled as pleasantly as I could. ‘We were always going to lose money,’ I said. ‘You didn’t tell me I had to keep the coffers full; you told me I had to take the company forward. That costs money; you’ve got enough business experience to know that, right?’ Sam scowled. ‘I’m still not happy about it. It’s not like it’s your money we’re losing,’ he said. ‘And I gotta tell you, kid, it’s not like I’m seeing results just yet. According to the figures I’m looking at, we’re actually less popular than we were when you started.’ I shrugged. ‘You were in a downward spiral,’ I said. ‘Stopping the freefall means slowing it down a little first. It’ll take time for the new blood to get over with the crowds. Once that happens, everything will be golden.’ ‘What about the networks,’ Sam said. ‘I’ve been getting-‘ ‘Sports America is a problem,’ I said. ‘We’re holding on by the skin of our teeth, but I fully expect them to cancel us after the next show. They’re asking to much, and we don’t have the talent to give them what they want.’ Sam really didn’t want to hear that. His forehead crinkled. ‘So we’re just going to let ourselves get cancelled?’ “Not quite,’ I said. ‘I sent packages out to some of the other networks yesterday, offering the opportunity to pick up American Wrestling or package a new show. We’re still waiting to hear back from them, but I’m confident we’ll still have some national cover. With a bit of luck, we’ll even be able to make some incursions into Mexico.’ Sam grunted and scowled as he looked over the figures. I waited, patient. ‘I really don’t like you, kid,’ Sam said. ‘It kills me that I have to hope that you’re right about all this.’ ‘If it makes you feel better, it’s not like you’ll be alone,’ I said. I pushed a folder across the table. ‘Sign these, okay?’ Sam opened the folder and flicked through the paperwork. ‘What the hell’s this, kid?’ ‘Pink slips,’ I said. ‘This week we start cutting the dead weight from Redwood’s new blood initiative.’ ___________________________________ News USPW starts February by cancelling their contracts with The Hillbilly’s, Danny Rushmore (who needs another monster heel in a promotion full of monster heels), Patrick Cool, Cheetah Boy, and Bull Wrecker (see Danny Rushmore). I made myself scarce for most of the next day. To make matters worse, the wrestling industry was bottoming out across the U.S (Rated E) and even the smaller networks weren’t interested in picking up a weekly wrestling show. National Pride TV at least showed some interest before rejecting us, mentioning that they’d be happy to pick us up if only wrestling were more popular right now. Bringing the company up to Cult size was going to be difficult without national exposure. The solution I pitched didn’t make Sam happy, but it had some advantages. We’d attempt to hold two weekly show – a larger two-hour extravaganza in the South West to keep our loyal fan-base happy, and a smaller one-hour show in the Tri-State region to keep building upon the fan-base we’d started developing there when we toured through there. With luck, the increased exposure the undercard would ensure that the crowd was interested in more than just Bruce by the time we got another TV deal, and if we eventually got back to the point where we could draw a solid crowd and make money we’d even forgo the DVD revenue in favor of internet broadcasts. Nothing in this plan would make us money, but it might help us grow in the long term. That idea seemed to placate Sam when he was ranting at me about paying wrestlers their usual paychecks.
A couple a surprises in this show. I didn't think Muscles was ready for an important victory over Datsun or that Grayson and T-Rex could produce a good match. Hell, it should be half the fun of the gimmick. :D

Spite managed to regain some momentum with some solid offense, knocking Brady silly with a flurry of punches, but the Knight of the Squared Circle was on fire tonight and easily regained the advantage. The match ended when Sir Brady locked in the Maryland crossface, wrenching Spite’s neck around and coming close to getting the Demon to tap out. The Lords were obviously in their element, focused on causing as much damage as they could rather than winning their match. Unfortunately things got out of control when Sheik Mustafa appeared and ordered Savage Fury into the ring. The two tribesmen leapt through the ropes and started brawling with the Lords, and Those Damn Kids recovered long enough to duck ringside and bring chairs into the equation. Baby Jamie did his best to get the entire match under control, eventually evicting Savage Fury, but Warlord Pain clocked Spike in the head with a chair while the ref was hustling Java from the ring and picked up the three-count. The End came in fired up, but struggled to land effective offense against the nigh indestructible Giant. In the end Joss resorted to fighting dirty, landing a low blow and a DDT to take the Giant down to the mat and score a quick two-count. Bruce rallied after that, returning the favor with a series of brutal powerslams and a mile-high spinebuster that left Thompson whimpering on the matt. The two men proved to have fairly decent chemistry together, with Bruce naturally giving ground to Thompson’s counter attack and actually doing an almost-credible job of selling the offense. In the end, however, Bruce was always going to win this. Victory via the Giant Choke Slam, but some appreciative marks gave Thompson a small round of applause as he headed into the back after the match. The best news I’ve gotten, however, is the notes that suggest that Thompson’s popularity has improved as a result of his match tonight, as has Sir Brady’s. I did kick myself for forgetting the Deadwood/Redwood promo I had planned for this match though. Tonight’s also a reminder that I need to start focusing on the tag-division a little more. There are some solid wrestlers down there, as well as some solid chemistry, and it’s time they got a little more ring time than they’re currently getting.
Great work, I really like what you're doing, slowly turning around the company but still staying true to its nature. Those challenges to Bruce are a great way to give a overness boost to some people in my opinion.

Thanks Onu. I have to admit, the challenge of making USPW work is more enticing than I thought it'd be when I started, even if you disregard my love of bad gimmicks and the workers who turn them into something special. Some of the wrestlers that I'm still pushing after four months and thirty odd shows is kind of surprising. Of course, so are some of the people I've completely forgotten to push when they should have been. Working with Bruce isn't all its cracked up to be in terms of sharing around the popularity. The problem with Bruce is that he just can't make just anyone look good in a match - he can get the story working if he's on top, but he can't sell worth a damn. It takes a very special kind of worker (at this point, Brimstone and maybe Joss Thompson) to lose a match with the Champ and come out looking like he could have been a contender. If I had my time over, I would have turned Bruce heel in the first show and set him up to drop the belt to someone like Freddie Datsun - less credible as a long-term champion, but destined to make most of the people he beats look strong as long as they've got a few shreds of talent. But we learn as we go, and big lunk-head Bruce has managed to bust his popularity down a few levels all on his own by the time I seriously considered having him drop the belt :) Hmm. Long post. Blame it on the fact that I've spent the last two days evaluating the roster and working out where people fit in rather than running shows :)

Good work with a tough promotion and a good diary. I like challenges myself, which is why I am always doing NYCW. Having done a few personal games as USPW I know how hard it is to actually get any good in ring ratings with the starting talent, despite all the overness they start out with.
Put the tag belts on Cal sanders and youll have a reader for life =)
That would require convincing the fickle USPW audiance that they should be cheering for someone who could, you know, actually wrestle. Poor Cal - you know you're in for a bad year when your Indian-born tag-team partner does more with your Lumberjack gimmick in ten minutes than you've done in five years. Fortunately I've got plans for Cal, and they amuse me enough that I plan on cramming him down the viewers throats whether the fans like him or not.

He was halfway out of his chair, waving the paper around in my face. “I believe it’s called a contract,’ I said. “You know, those things we give people so they work for us?” ‘Ray Kingman?” Sam said. Those famous veins were starting to pop out of his throat. “The man’s even older than I am. What in hell do we need Kingman for, Kid?” “He’s our road-agent,’ I said. Sam’s jaw dropped so hard you could hear it clattering across his desk. “We’ve got a road agent,’ he said. ‘Sure,” I said. “A damn good one. Unfortunately, the road agent we’ve got is one of the best talkers in the game and the primary reason most people are showing up at the shows. We’re wasting you backstage, Sam; we need you up-front so people remember why they started coming to USPW in the first place.” Sam snarled and slumped back into the chair. I had him there, and he knew it. ‘I want you on Color,’ I said. ‘Right in the foreground, where everyone can see you. We need a face to contrast Jillefski’s commentary anyway. I’ve already informed Sneer that he’ll be moving into a management position – that tends to suit him better than commentary does anyway. Crippler will take over the road agent job; he’s the only person we could find who came close to knowing more than you do about running a locker room. We’re not losing as much cash as we feared on the weekly shows, so we can afford to pay him for the time being.” “Fine,” Sam said. “You win, he stays. But I’m not happy about this.” “You don’t have to be,” I said. “Not unless the fans are around.” _________________________________________ USPW Beachside Bash Held at the Arkansas Colesium on Wednesday Nights Attendance: 2,000 People (Sell Out!) ______________________ Main Show The lights go out at the start of the show, and a spotlight hits the centre of the ring. You stopped me from wrestling in America, forced me to take up with promotions in the UK, and still I came back. You can tried to keep me off the card, and I came back to stake my claim. If you want to keep me off the canvas at Red, White and Blue, you’d better have an army to keep me out of the ring. Because as of right now, I’m offering an open challenge: If there is anyone in that locker room willing to fight for the future of American wrestling, they can take me on at Red, White, and Blue. Bruce and Brimstone squared off against one another to start, then tagged out to Demon and Sir Brody. It didn’t take long for things to get out control, though, especially with Demon Anger and Russ Vinzio both prowling about outside the ring. Sir Brody was taken out by Anger when he went to the ropes, though Bruce came to the rescue of his partner and started brawling with Anger around the ring. Vinzio hit Bruce with a chair, Bruce clubbed Vinzio, and Brimstone launched a moonsault off the top rope that collapsed everyone on the floor.
