WCW 97 - Re-Writing History

November 17, 1997

Wrestling Observer November 17, 1997: Did McMahon really hand over the keys to Canada to WCW? Will fans really hate McMahon four weeks later when Michaels headlines a PPV show with a four star match? Will Hart be a huge success keeping WCW at its current level, or even taking them to an even higher level by having main events on PPV shows that can live up to the quality of the preliminary matches? Or are his best years really behind him and McMahon will have the last laugh at how much Bischoff paid for him? Live on TBS, we have a rabid crowd here tonight as I turn to my parners in crime Bobby "The Brain Heenan" and Larry Zybyszko.... Heenan: A rabid crowd is right Tenay, this crowd can't make up their mind if they're WCW or nWo. If you ask me it's a disgrace! Zybyszko: A disgrace is an understatement Brain, the people in the arena tonight chanting for the nWo make me sick. Week after week we've seen the nWo show themselves for the slimeball rats that they are. Only last week they turned on one of their own..... Tenay: You're refering to The Giant if I'm correct Larry, I wouldn't say he's one of their own after last week though. The beating that the nWo gave to The Giant was just brutal, close sources have told us that he will in fact be appearing tonight and even bigger news is it's rumoured to be with old friend Lex Luger! That aside tonight we have Hollowood Hulk Hogan defending his WCW World Heavyweight Title against Diamond Dallas Page. That's right, a stipulation was enforced today at WCW head office which forces Hogan to defend his title tonight or risk seeing it stripped. I can guarantee you the nWo will not be pleased with that ruling. Segment Rating: B+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Camera cuts to the back where a black humvee pulls into the parking lot, Luger exits a door and rushes to the other side. He opens the door and a visibly bandaged and wounded Giant stumbles out. Luger places two massive steel crutches under his arms and the two head inside. Luger opens the door for Big Show who's startled by two figures on the other side, it's The Steiner Brothers. Both men launch an icy stare at the big man.... Giant: There a problem here? S.Steiner: No problem. Giant: Good.... Out of nowhere all four men are ambushed by the nWo. Nash, Hall, Savage, Bagwell, Hennig and Konnan outnumber and outpower the WCW loyalists and proceed to make another vicious statement. The Nasty Boyz get out to a great early start taking their energy straight to Hall who starts. As soon as Scott makes the tag to Nash it's house cleaning time. Saggs goes up first then Knobbs, both nealy broken in half by Jacknifes. Davey Boy Smith via pinfall 11:39 Match Rating: C+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A video is played hyping the Sting vs Hollywood Hulk Hogan storyline, the feud has been a year in the making and now only 4 weeks out from Starrcade Hogan is showing signs of heightened anticipation leading up to the match. Now a new twist has been added to the mix, it's announced next week on Monday Night Nitro a very important announcement will be made concerning the Hogan vs Sting match at Starrcade Segment Rating: A* -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hollywood Hulk Hogan vs Diamond Dallas Page - WCW World Heavyweight Title Hogan plays the crowd early, taunting DDP with tests of a strength only to take control via his infamous eye-poke. DDP regains some momentum late but the nWo posse aren't far away. It's a good thing too as Hogan is clearly running out of gas late in the match. Konnan, Rick Rude and Randy Savage storm down the entrance ramp, they quickly take up all sides of the ring apron surrounding DDP in a sea of nWo. Referee Nick Patrick does his best to drive off the pack but eventually the numbers catch up to him. As Patrick argues with Konnan to leave ringside he turns his back on the action, Macho Man takes the oppurtunity to nail DDP with the time keepers bell. Hogan hits the ropes and lands a Leg Drop for the win to a loud chorus of boos. Hollywood Hulk Hogan via pinfall 18:50 Match Rating: B+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hogan grabs the mic as the nWo continue the beatdown on DDP.... Hogan: Do you miserable excuses for people see this piece of trash in my ring? In the ring that Hollywood made! This is what I'm gonna do to you Sting! That's right brother, at Starcade you're gonna hurt so bad you're gonna wished you never crossed the "Pro wrestlings biggest Icon". All the face paint and scary birds in the World aren't gonna help you when the Hollywoods pythons rain down terror on you! Hulk grabs the WCW title, now spraypainted nWo and whips the remaining life out of DDP...... Segment Rating: A* -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Giants music hits, Luger and Giant both injured come to DDP's aid. Even injured Giant still manages to clear house on Konnan and Luger on Rick Rude. Savage and Hogan stand on the entrance ramp looking on in a rage. Segment Rating: B+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The nWo music hits once again and the familiar sight of Nash and Hall, this time joined by Curt Hennig. The three with Savage and Hogan rush the ring and lay out Giant and Luger in no time. Both are beaten unconscious and then embarrassingly branded on their backs with black spray paint. The nWo has once again overtaken WCW Nitro. Segment Rating: A --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quick Match Results: E.Guerrero def. Of course the major changes will come in at Starrcade. Also I've deleted Benoit from the data. I don't see a problem playing a scenario with him in it but it seems too weird at the moment to include him in a diary in any way. Feedback welcome.....

Good first show, as you say yourself it will probably come into it's own after Starcade but it was still enjoyable to read. It would probably seem weird reading about Benoit and I'd imagine people would be reluctant to give him a significant push.

Sean Waltman, better known as the nWo's Syxx has decided to stay with the company after lengthy discussions with new head booker Carlito. It was rumoured that Waltman had a major falling out with former head booker Eric Bischoff and was close to being released. While Bischoff is not happy with the move many insiders consider it smart, by not only keeping a good talent but more importantly keeping Waltman from returning to rivals WWF. Before Tenay can get out another word the all too familiar sound of the nWo theme song interupts the airwaves. Bischoff appears from behind the the curtain to his own "Hitman" music Bret: Well you know, the past few years I've been pretty busy. I've been busy in some little minor league beating the living heck out of guys like The Undertaker, and Steve Austin, oh and that little nancy shmuck Shawn Michaels. You know I got kinda bored of beating them so much so often it was getting kind of repetitive. I pride myself on being the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be, I couldn't say that and look myself in the eye competing in that circus. Now if I had it my way I'd be competing at Starcade, but I can understand that the card has already been made but I'm glad I'll be at the show. Bret turns to Bischoff, Hogan and the nWo in the ring Bret: I appreciate that you've made a spot for me Eric, Hollywood..... I look forward to your match with Sting. Bret turns and leaves the nWo in the ring looking confused but pleased. Hogan and Eric give eachother a nod of confidence as we cut to a break..... Segment Rating: A* -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chris Jericho vs Alex Wright These two just don't click and it showed, a few botched spots from Wright but Jericho does well enough to keep it from train-wreck level. Maybe a bit too long for these young guys. Tenay does a good job of putting Jericho's inovative moves over. Jericho hits a running bulldog and locks on the Lion Tamer for the clean win. Jericho via submission 13:46 Match Rating: D+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Buff Bagwell vs Norman Smiley Another two guys who clearly don't click, Buff does his usual stalling and flexing. Buff dominates most of the match and hits a Buff Blockbuster for the win. Bagwell via pinfall 7:48 Match Rating: D+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rey Mysterio vs Silver King This is turning out to be some sort of record night for WCW as this is the third consecutive match where the two competitors work horribly together. Rey lands some crazy planchas to the outside before hitting a Springoard Hurricarana for the win. Mysterio via pinfall 9:17 Match Rating: D- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Goldberg vs Michael Wallstreet Goldberg comes storming out of the corner and lands some stiff knees to Wallstreets ribs. Wallstreet rolls outside and nails Goldberg with his briefcase then rolls him back into the ring. He makes the cover but Goldberg kicks out at two with verocity. Wallstreet begs for mercy but Goldberg delivers a Spear, it's then up for the Jackhammer. Tenay and Heenan do a great job of getting Goldberg over as an animal. This one's over in no time. Goldberg via pinfall 2:58 Match Rating: D+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Harlem Heat vs The Faces of Fear Suprisingly not too ugly, mind you Booker T clearly has instructions to carry the workload in this one. Meng and Barbarian double team and isolate Stevie with quick tags. Sherri Martel does some good work at ringside taunting Faces of Fear. Stevie Ray eventually makes the hot tag to Booker T who cleans house, Booker catches Meng with the Harlem Hangover and scores the pin. Harlem Heat via pinfall 11:51 Match Rating: C -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A video is shown recapping the beatdown Luger, Giant and The Steiners received at the hands of the nWo last week. Tenay explains that all four men are at their respective homes making recoveries. Tenay notes that this leaves WCW numbers very low tonight with DDP also taking the night off to rest his wounds. Segment Rating: B+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ric Flair's music hits as he makes his trademark strut down the entrance ramp. Flair bounce of the ropes, this time he stops and shakes the cage Flair: Charlotte, I want to tell you a story....... The nWo music hits as Hennig and Rude make there way into the cage. Rude grabs a mic.... Rick Rude: Ric, Ric, Ric. These people don't want to hear some old man tell stories! They didn't come here and pay money to reminisce. Get that silly looking robe off and get ready for "Perfection"! You want this title, you're gonna have to do alot more then Woooooo! Rude leaves the cage with Hennigs US Title and the officials lock the door after him. Segment Rating: A -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ric Flair vs Curt Hennig - WCW United States Title A technical clinic early as both men exchange holds with dual respect, Hennig uses his power to back Flair into a corner and take the advantage. Flair is bounced of the cage but doesn't juice due to the "Turner rule". Flair finally makes a comeback, he whips Hennig into the ropes knocking down referee Nick Patrick. The dreaded ref bump but Flair locks on the Figure Four, Hennig screams in pain, he taps hard but Patrick's still down. Rude is frantic on the outside, soon enough members of the nWo poor from the back. Hogan, Savage, Konnan, Bagwell, DiBiase, Virgil and Scott Norton, all nWo members except for The Outsiders. They all begin to scale the cage, Dean Malenko and Arn Anderson rush down to the cage. The only two remaining horsemen try in vain to stop the nWo before being laid out with chairs. All members of the nWo now descend into the cage.... Tenay: This is disgusting, Ric Flair has absolutely no one to help him. As you all saw earlier, Luger, Giant and The Steiners were all taken out last week and The Horsemen were Flair's last allys who could come to his aid. This does not look good at all for Ric Flair! Heenan: I can't watch this Tenay! This is making me sick, Ric Flair is a legend in this city. There will be children crying at home as we speak asking their parents what the hell is going on! Zbyszko: I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's unacceptable, this isn't pro wrestling. I can't witness this guys. I'm leaving, I'm going home I'll see you all later. Zbyszko drops his headset and walks off stage, the camera swithces back to the action. Hennig has won the match and defended his US title climbing out of the cage with ease. Hennig via Cage Escape 24:44 Match Rating: B+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flair is being decimated postmatch, Hogan has his Hollwood belt in full force lashing Flair repeatedly. Members of the nWo take turns in performing their finisher on Flair, in a final sign of insult Virgil is given the oppurtunity to slap Flair and dance over an unconscious Nature Boy. The crowd is in disbelief as the beating seems to have no end with all men locked inside the steel fortress. Hogan signals for the spraypaint, he rolls Flair over and shakes the can. Hogan laughs at the crowd and crouches to administer the humiliation...... Segment Rating: A* -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The arena turns pitch black, an erie sound is played over the loud speakers. Smoke fills the rafters off the Charlotte Coliseum, the lights fade back on with the crowd and nWo engrossed on the roof. The smoke clears and it's Sting! He quickly launches down and lands in the middle of the ring, baseball bat in hand. The nWo are paralysed in fear as Sting throws the bat away and asks them too bring it. The Outsiders meantime rush to ringside and help Rick Rude in his struggle to grab the cage key from WCW officials. Back in the ring Sting starts his path of destruction. Virgil and DiBiase are tossed aside, Konnan and Norton are sent like darts into the steel cage. Bagwell is next this time it's a Stinger Splash followed by Hennig sharing the same fate. Savage is now the only man left with Hogan, Sting starts to stalk Savage leaving Hollywood to cower in the corner. Sting locks Savage in a Scorpion Deathlock, Nash and Hall manage to get the cage door open as Hogan rushes out. Sting stares at Hulk not releasing the hold on Savage. Eventually Sting lets go, he picks up his bat and once again points it straight at Hogan, Hollwood looks on in fear as Nitro fades to black. Segment: A* --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quick Match Results: Jericho def. Inoki has been claiming for months to be bringing in the Olympian champion but most just considered it the usual "Inoki Hype". Most experts are in agreement that Japan will be the best place for Angle to hone his skills. Antnio Inoki has taken exception to the move and delared war immediately. For anyone that's counting, WCW is now at war with the 3 biggest promotions of the 3 biggest pro wrestling countries in the World. In the US of course that's the biggest promotion besides themselves. Monday Week 3, December 1997 Location: American Airlines Center Attendance: 15,000 (Sell-Out) Live on TNT Tenay: As the fireworks light up the American Airlines Center we welcome you to WCW Monday Night Nitro! Tonight we have a great show lined up for you...... The broadcast is interupted..... The nWo in full force stroll to the ring as Bischoff takes up the mic Bischoff: Hullo again everybody, thank you for the warm welcome. I'm gonna make this short and sweet. I'm a fair man, I'm a man of honour, a man of my word! Just because I happen to hold all the power in WCW doesn't mean I will abuse that power. A lesser man would there's no doubt about that. So I'm going to give WCW a chance, a chance to prove its worth. A chance to prove that it's more then an withering, dying, poor excuse for a promotion. At Starrcade XV next Sunday, 9 matches will take place. Each of those 9 matches will pit a WCW wrestler against an nWo wrestler. At the end of the night whoever has more wins...... Gains total control of WCW forever! Pretty simple aint it, though you better get your act togther WCW. Starrcade's less then two weeks away and the last time I checked you were lucky to muster 9 men worthy of holding the nWo's jockstraps. Next week on Nitro, we will decide the matches. We will name our first particpant and you your challenger, then vice-versa until all 8 remaining matches are made. Good luck WCW, if I were you I'd just be enjoying the last of what you have, because at Starrcade XV, the nWo is "officially" taking over! Bischoff drops the mic and encourages the nWo to follow him to the back in fits of laughter. As we cut to an ad break.... Segment Rating: A* -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tenay: Welcome back to the broadcast ladies and gentlemen and excuse us if we sound a little off at the moment. Eric Bischoff has just dropped a bomb shell on WCW. An already scattered and divided promotion has been thrust into even deeper turmoil with the announcement that Starrcade will decide the fate of its very existance. Zybszko: For Bischoff to come out and say he's a fair man is a joke! He knows we're weaker then ever at the moment, they on the other hand thanks to Bischoff and Dibiase's money are ready to pounce like a pack of hyenas! Heenan: Look on the bright side Larry, you don't have to wrestle anymore..... I mean a the bright side for us. Tenay: Now to our first match of the night, and what a match it's set to be. A 10 man elimination match for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship number one contendership. The winner was scheduled to face Eddy Guerrero at Starrcade but after the announcement we just heard I'm not sure how this will work. Alex Wright vs Billy Kidman vs Chavo Guerrero Jr. vs Juventud Guerrero vs Prince Iaukea vs Psicosis vs Rey Mysterio Jr. vs Silver King vs Super Calo vs Ultimo Dragon - WCW Cruiserweight #1 Contendership All men start the match and it's an all out spot fest. Prince Iaukea is the first to be eliminated by Ultimo Dragon. Next Kidman hits his Shooting Star Press on Silver King for the pinfall. Dragon hits another Tiger Suplex, this time on Wright eliminating him. All the Mexicans turn to Kidman who is standing alone in a corner. They set to team him but Mysterio and Dragon come to his aid evening the odds. Juventud and Chavo still manage to double team Kidman and Juvi lands the 450 Splash for the pin. Rey eliminates Super Calo with a roll up and Psicosis is pinned by Dragon while Chavo and Juvi plot their next move in a corner. Now down to 4 men, Ultimo Dragon has Chavo groggy in the midle of the ring, he hits the ropes but is tripped up by a vengeful Psicosis. Juventud seizes the oppurtunity and hits a Dragon Suplex taking Ultimo Dragon out of the match. The two Guerreros turn their attention to an alert Mysterio, they charge Rey but he uses his speed to evade their advances. Rey in what seems like one motion runs, jumps lands, turns and jumps again off a top turnbuckle and launches with a crossbody on both Juvi and Chavo. Chavo is the first to recover and is met with Springboard Hurracanrana and elimination. Juventud has recovered and smashes Rey from behind with an elbow to the head, Juvi sets up Rey for a 450 Splash but Rey rolls out of the way, Misteriorrana! 1,2,3 and Rey Mysterio Jr. is the #1 Contender for the WCW Cruiserweight Title. Rey Mysterio via pinfall 18:01 Match Rating: D+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Public Enemy vs Fit Finlay & Norman Smiley Basic brawl with Public Enemy dominating. Johnny Grunge with a Powerbomb on Norman Smiley for the win. By the look of the match Rocco Rock seems to be getting some tips on his techinical work. This match brought the crowd's mood down. Public Enemy via pinfall 6:31 Match Rating: D- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Glacier vs Mortis Both men start the match taunting eachother through their masks. Glacier rips his mask off and screams at Mortis to bring it, Mortis charges Glacier and nails him hard with a running clothesline. Glacier gets to his feet but Mortis picks him up and tosses him into the turnbuckles, Mortis just stalks Glacier for the rest of the match. Mortis with the Northen Lights Suplex and someone just got buried. Mortis via pinfall 3:14 Match Rating: D -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dean Malenko vs Perry Saturn Great stiff brawl early, Malenko displays all of his extensive arsenal in this match applying holds that haven't been seen on TV since the 80's. Saturn gets frustrated at several two counts, he begins to argue with referee Randy Anderson turning his back on Malenko. Saturn turns around into a Super Gutbuster for a clean win. Malenko via pinfall 15:52 & New WCW Television Champion Match Rating: C+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ric Flair and Arn Anderson are backstage talking with Dean Malenko, Malenko seems to be suprised by what he's being told. Segment Rating: B -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Goldberg vs Steven Regal Regal recluctantly gets into the ring before quickly ducking out immediately after the bell rings. After a lengthy cat and mouse game Regal returns to the ring with a chair in hand, the refere grabs the weapon off him and walks to the opposite corner to dispose of it. With the refs back turned Regal pulls out the brass knucks from his tights and nails Golderg square in the middle of the eyes. Regal makes a quick cover and calls for the referees attention. 1,2...Goldberg kicks out, Regal in amazement rolls out of the ring and makes his way to the back, the ref proceeds to count him out as Regal takes a final look back at the ring and the animal in it. Goldberg via Count Out 12:59 Match Rating: C+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A video is shown hyping the upcoming Outsiders vs Steiner Brothers match and current feud. Segment Rating: B+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Outsiders vs The Steiner Brothers - WCW World Tag Team Titles Nash starts the match against Rick and takes the early advantage, Nash seems off his game tonight. Rick is isolated before making a hot tag to Scott, Scott with a belly to belly gets a near fall on Hall. Nash makes a tag back in and takes back control using his size and power to slow the match down to Big Lazy pace. Scott Steiner reaches Rick for the tag but Hall has referee Nick Patrick distracted and the ref reverses it. Rick Steiner is furious on the outside and tries to enter the ring, Patrick wrestles with him to stay on the outside as Nash hits a very low blow on Scott Steiner. Patrick threatens Rick with ejecting him from the match as opposed to a DQ. Rick settles down and returns to the outside. Meanwhile Scott Steiner clutching his crotch gets set for a ride, Jacknife Powerbomb 1,2,3. Nash with the tainted pin on Scotty and we've got new tag tag champions. The Outsiders via pinfall 17:46 & New WCW World Tag Team Champions Match Rating: B -------------------------------------------------------------------------- As we return from the break The Outsiders are still standing in the ring with their newly won tag team titles. The rest of the nWo appear from the back and join them in the ring. This time Bischoff hands the mic to Hogan who is clapping the performances of Nash and Hall...... Hogan: What can I say about you two that I haven't said before? All of you snot nosed ingrates out there take a good look at the most dominant force in proffesional wrestling. World Tag Team gold is back where it belongs, in the nWo! Now that you guys reclaimed what is rightfully ours it looks like everything is on track..... Hennig hold up his US Title as Hogan holds up his spraypainted WCW World Heavyweight Title. Hogan: By next Sunday the nWo will hold every title the WCW has ever known! You know we noticed WCW kinda has the odds on us in the numbers department though. I mean there's only a few of us and a whole promotion of them! Which brings me to my next point, in anticipation for Starrcade XV, the nWo hs gone on a recruitment drive. A drive that will bring the elite and best to our ranks. DiBiase and Eric have been negotiating all week and I'm very happy to inform you all the nWo has three new members!!! Eric I'll let you do the honours....... Bischoff: Thank you Hollywood. Ladies and gentlemen, the first new member of the nWo. a veteran of the ring, a technician feared by many and a brawler respected by all...... Steven Regal! Regal comes to the ring accomponied by nWo music and donning an nWo shirt and joins the group to a round of handshakes Bischoff: You know once and a while I suprise even my self with my business brilliance. I consider our next signing a major coup, while WCW has been arguing and bickering between themselves they've let one of their best talents walk right out the door! With this signing we have all divisions covered, and I mean covered! Introducing to the nWo, Eddy Guerrero the WCW World Cruiserweight Champion!!! Eddy struts to the ring with a smile ear to ear, he hugs most of the group and takes position next to Konnan Bischoff: Now the last one was a tough one, he cost us alot of money to bring in. You see I've gotten word that WCW will be putting The Giant forward as one of their participants at Starrcade. Well as you know and as expected our expert "Giant Killer" is now one half off the World Tag Team Champions. Which means he won't be participating in any single bouts next Sunday. You know I wasn't too sure what to do so I asked our money man. The Million Dollar Man told me off a Giant Killer he knew that could come to WCW and chop down any giant with ease. Ladies and gentlemen I bring you the newest member of the nWo.... The Giant Killer........ Sid Vicious!!!! Vicious appears in his own nWo shirt and lugs to the ring greeted by his newest lackeys. Bischoff: Before I introduce to the World the new nWo I have to say...... something looks wrong with this picture... Bischoff, the 3 new members, Hogan, Hall and Nash stand on one side of the ring with the rest of the nWo on the opposite side watching on in confusion Bischoff: See when we started this thing we made it clear what the nWo was here to do. We made it clear that we were the elite of the elite, that our ranks are only filled with the very best talent in the World! Like I said, something looks wrong with this picture..... Hogan: Savage, get your ass over here, you belong here brother! Savage walks over to Bisch, Hall, Nash and stands next to Hogan. It's obvious what's happening now as the remaining nWo members standing alone appear very nervous and angry. Bischoff: Hennig, you've proved your worth, let's go. Buff, we need someone to pose for the calender this year, hurry up. Hogan: Konnan you're our Mexican connection, the nWo is your home dude. Hennig, Bagwell and Konnan walk over to the official nWo side of the ring, Hennig turns and smirks at the remaining guys in typical Mr Perfect style. Vicent (Virgil), Scott Norton and Rick Rude are the only ones remaining alone. Bischoff: Oh boy, this is kinda awkward. Bischoff sarcastically appologises to Vincent, Norton and Rude before handing the mic over to Hogan. Hogan: It's real simple brothers, the nWo is for the elite, the best of the best! I don't know how you guys ever joined in the first place but the rides over brothers! Get em boys! The nWo jump the three ex-members and rip their nWo shirts from their backs holding the tattered shreds into the air. The reformed nWo stand in the ring and congratulate eachother on their even stronger dominance off Nitro. Saturday Week 3, December 1997 News Reports
* In what was news to all of even the news sites Sid Vicious debuted on WCW Nitro joining the nWo. The move is regarded as very questionable given Sids history in the promotion and relationship with many backstage, the deal was announced by new head booker Carlito as "...only short-term". Starrcade was lacking big name stars and with such little time the decision was made to bring in the biggest name available. With Vicious joining the nWo the stable now stands as...... Hollywood Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Randy Savage, Curt Hennig, Konnan, Sid Vicious, Steven Regal, Eddy Guerrero and Buff Bagwell with Bischoff and DiBiase as the figureheads, also Syxx who is injured at the moment. * In another major house clean in the build up to Starrcade and the new year, WCW has released the following wrestlers from contract...... Rick Martel, Scott Vick (Sick Boy), Lodi, Ray Lloyd (Glacier), Prince Iaukea, Scotty Riggs and Vincent (Virgil). * NJPW have continued their latest spending spree and brought in Bam Bam Bigelow on a written contract. The deal means Bigelow will be finishing up with ECW within a week. The much talked about youngster Masato Tanaka has also signed a written deal with the company leaving the much smaller FMW to take up the deal. * US female worker Molly Holly has signed a PPA contract with GAEA, an all female regional promotion in Japan. Molly is spoken highly off amongst those that have worked with her. She is expected to evolve into a great female worker. Haha, I loved the Austin Powers In Goldmember-type scene at the end ('Ok, everyone out! Not you Scotty... Not you Number 2..'), and SID~!!! This is fun, and my only complaint is the use of the 1999-era Nitro logo for the match previews, especially when you're using the old one at the top of the card.

Monday Week 4, December 1997 Location: Target Center Attendance: 15,000 (Sell-Out) Live on TNT The Nitro pyro explodes as the cameras zoom in on the two podiums set for tonights Starrcade XV match selections. A WCW banner is hung behind one and an nWo behind the other. Tenay: Ladies and gentlemen welcome to what maybe the last Monday Nitro that we as WCW bring to you. In a few moments Larry Zybszko will take the stage representing WCW and Eric Bischoff the nWo. The two men will establish who will participate in Starrcade XV this coming Sunday and who as a result who will be determining WCW and the nWo's very future! The nWo music hits, Bischoff appears from behind the curtain and takes up a podium. Zybszko is next, wearing a WCW shirt he takes his place behind his podium. Bischoff: Good evening, I hope you've made the most of the last week Zybszko. This Sunday will be your last roll of the dice old man so you better go out with a bang! Let's get down to business shall we, as we all know the 1st match is already signed. Hollywood Hulk Hogan is going to beat the life out of Sting so we're already one up! As for the second match though, obviously The Outsiders are looking to dominate someone at the show, I'm hoping you've got some good challengers. Who will it be Zybszko? Zybyszo checks a pre-prepared list. Zybszko: Well we here at WCW we have been meeting all week. Let's just say we haven't had a shortage of volunteers for matches. But we have to be smart about this, we know what the outcome will be if we don't come out on top. So our challengers to The Outsiders, and the WCW World Tag Team Titles.... are the rightful owners of those belts! The Steiner Brothers! But this time to ensure it's fair it's gotta be a TLC Tornado Tag Team Match! Bischoff: I thought you knew your history Zybszko, you obviously haven't been paying attention the past few years. (Laughs) You wanna put your guys in the ring with Scott Hall and a ladder and Kevin Nash and a table go right ahead... You got yourself a deal you crazy old luny! It's your selection next, man I hope you do better then that one, this thing's gonna be easier then I thought. Zybszko: Our next selection, is a WCW legend! A man I'm honoured to announce as standing in our corner this Sunday...... "The Nature Boy" Ric Flar!!! Bischoff grabs his podium mic to respond but is interupted by Ric Flair's music. Flair struts onto the stage with his own mic in hand, he woooos and dances in the middle of the stage Flair: Well, well, the WCW wants to kill the nWo and they want the Nature Boy's help. Wooooooo! Well I'd love nothing more then to see the end of the nWo. I have a question for you though WCW, where were you when we needed you? Where were you one year ago when The Horsemen were the first to stand up against these thugs? Over the past year I've seen my beloved Four Horsemen turn into a laughing stock of the industry! Arn and I have made the decision that enough is enough! The Horsemen aren't anybodys lackeys. We're the most elite group of pro wrestling athletes in the World! If WCW and the nWo want to have a war to decide who runs things around here so be it, it doesn't change any for us! We're not getting involved in any more of this crap until it benefits us to do so. That time isn't now and it isn't at Starrcade XV, Zybszko.... WCW..... you want to fight this war, fight it for yourself for a change! Tenay: Bobby The Brain can you believe this? Without the Horsemen that means not only Flair but Dean Malenko and Arn Anderson won't be competing! Heenan: Who cares Tenay? We don't need them! One's handicapped and retired and the other one's got little man syndrome, we don't need em! Flair exits the stage leaving Bischoff laughing on the stage pointing at Zybszko who is is frantically looking over his notes. Bischoff: Oh man, this is too much. You guys really are a joke, even your biggest legend doesn't want to fight for you! Zybszko: A slight setback, that's all. Alright then.... our next selction is Davey Boy Smith! Bischoff: He's a lucky man, he's going to get a shot at WCW US gold. Our challenger will be Curt Hennig! Okay, our next selction is "The Macho Man" Randy Savage! Zybszko: That's an easy one, we had a special request for this one. Diamond Dallas Page! Our next selection is....... The Giant! Bischoff: We prepared for this remember (smirks). "The Giant Killer" Sid Vicious! Our next selection will honour a match from last week if it's WCW's wish. Eddy Guerrero will defend his WCW World Cruiserweight Title against the wrestler of your chosing. Zybszko: Then as he proved last week WCW's challenger will be Rey Mysterio Jr.! Our next selection is a long time WCW loyalist, Lex Luger! Bischoff: Ahh, the man with the best body in professional wrestling. Well we have a man who disputes that claim. His opponent will be Buff "The Stuff" Bagwell! Our next participant is new to the group but not this ring, "Lord" Steven Regal! Zybszko looks over his notes again in a desperate manner looking for a name that will magically appear. He crunches the paper the notes are wrtitten on into a ball and throws it in frustration..... Zybszko: There may be a few people back there who don't like my next selection but I'm making this call because I believe it's our best chance. Our challenger will be one half of The Harlem Heat...... Booker T! Bischoff: Okay, well for your last selection.... Zybszko looks puzzled not saying a word.. Bischoff: Well I'll take the initiative here. Our next participant, last but definitely not least..... Konnan our Mexican connection!!! Zybszko: This is another one alot of people might not be happy with but I have to make the call. This guy's only been with us a few months but I have no doubt he'll get the job done. Our challenger is.... Bill Goldberg! Bischoff looks suprised for the first time as we cut to break... Segment Rating: A+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dean Malenko vs Perry Saturn - WCW Television Title Saturn takes the advantage early using his power, Malenko makes a wrestling101 comeback with a SuperGutbuster for the decisive win. It's not long before Savage gets dirty, he takes control and DDP is on the wrong end of a beating for a good while. After several near falls Macho Man gets angry and starts to stomp DDP in the head. Kimberly can't take it any longer and rushes into the ring to try and intervene. Elizabeth is now in for Savage and takes Kimberly out, both women roll out of the ring and nearly half way up the entrance ramp. Savage is distracted by the fight outside and starts to make his way to the action. DDP recovers and the brawl picks up again on the outside. Referee Randy Anderson screams in vain to the men to return to the ring. He reaches a 10 count and the match is over. Mate, I thoroughly look forward to how you book WCW from here on in. The thing to me is this; this moment right here is the pivotal moment in professional wrestling history. The disgraceful ending to Starrcade IRL IMO sent WCW on a downward spiral, from which they would never recover. I enjoyed reliving that video too of the preview to Starrcade, I remember I think on a Nitro Sting was in the rafters with a vulture, and a child was speaking about him as a warrior of darkness... it was brilliant. Everything to that point was great really... I'm looking forward to seeing this done, and done right. I have my own views about what should have happened, as I'm sure every fan does, as long as it's different to what they actually did I'm sure you'll have a fan in me.

Thanks Tristram, it's amazing how many ol WCW marks are out there. Many have come out of the woodwork and given me suggestions on direction after Starrcade. All are welcome and I hope to incorporate some of them.

Starrcade 97 was just another example of bad decision and/or execution of the WCW. They had the talent, they had the star power, hell they even had great basic ideas... but all those things were handled to some people for review and improvement which results in incredibly horrible things since those people only thought about themselves. For the sake of this diary, I hope you correct history, 'cause so far, it's been a fun reading.

Eddy betrays the trust quickly though with a lowblow, he points to his nWo shirt as a sign of justification with a smile. Both men throw everything at eachother, Rey hits a Misteriorana but with a late cover Guerrero kicks out. Eddy utilises a thumb to the eye to set up Mysterio for a sitdown powerbomb. Rey kicks out, Eddy picks him up and sets him up for another, Rey struggles to reverse but Guerrero releases him sending the 120 lb lucha into the turnbuckles. Eddy drags a lifeless Rey into the middle of the canvas, Guerrero with a Frogsplash and just to make sure the foot on the ropes! This one's over. Tenay did a great job calling some of the rare lucha moves used in the match which really added to it. Guerrero via pinfall 15:22 Match Rating: C+ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Buff Bagwell vs Lex Luger As expected both guys spend the first fives minutes of the match posing and flexing. Buff gets angry at Lugers louder cheers and attacks him from behind to finally bring on the bell. Luger wins a test of strength sending Buff to chat to some ladies in the crowd on the outside. The brawl ends up back in the ring and Luger sets up Buff for the Torture Rack, Bagwell slips out and delivers a backbreaker. Bagwell with the momentum hits a running powerslam, Luger kicks out at two. Buff's nWo allys hit the ringside, Eddy Guerrero, Ted DiBiase, Konnan and Steven Regal all take up positions up on the apron. They quickly capture the attention of referee Randy Anderson, Luger gets up off the canvas and turns. Regal tosses Bagwell his knucks, Buff nails Luger in the head knocking him out cold. The nWo drop from the apron and point to Bagwell making the cheap cover. 1,2,3. Bagwell via pinfall 12:47 Match Rating: B- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tenay: This is ridiculous! I thought tonight was gonna be fair, straight down the line Bischoff that's what you said! Bischoff: I don't know what you're talking about, are we watching the same match? What I just saw was a fair and untainted contest. Tenay: Oh yeah untainted, just like the reports we've been getting all day that the nWo have offered Bret Hart $1,000,000 to call the main event in their favout tonight! Heenan: We've seen this all before Tenay, tonight is exactly what I thought it was going to be... a sham!!! Bischoff: Call it what you want loser! They all hold up their nWo shirts and trade handslaps in triumph.... Goldberg's music hits and his new pyro explodes! The animal punches and kicks through the smoke and makes his way down the ramp. The nWo in a common confusion back up in the ring as Goldberg slideds in. Eddy runs at him first and is met with a spear, Regal jumps him from behind but Goldberg shrugs it off and quickly powers him into a Jackhammer. DiBiase rushes him hesitantly and another Spear from Goldberg! Konnan rolls out of the ring signaling to the crowd he's much too smart for that. Ironically the bell rings though for the start of the next match, which happens to be Konnan vs Goldberg! Tenay: Well it looks like the odds may have just been evened! Officials clear the ring of nWo bodies as Goldberg jogs on the spot in his corner grunting like a caged beast. Konnan is still in absolute shock on the outside as referee Randy Anderson starts to wave the Mexican legend into the ring. Konnan orders Anderson to keep Goldberg in his corner and courageously rolls in. Goldberg walks into the middle of the ring and offers Konnan his best, Konnan bumps off the ropes and launches with a flying elbow dazing Goldberg, Konnan bumps off the other side this time launching with a knee high shoulder charge from behind finaly taking Goldberg off his feet. Konnan picks him up and delivers his Cradle DDT, Goldberg kicks out at one and with force. Goldberg in control now with an irish whip into the ropes, Spear! Jackhammer, and the three count is only paperwork. Booker T controls most of the match before Regal hits a lowblow pushing a wincing Booker T into referee Nick Patrick. With Patrick down the shifty Englishmen reaches down his tights for his infamous brass knucks. Booker is slowly getting to his feet as Regal winds up his deadly swing, Goldberg is in, he grabs the knucks from Regal and goes to deck him, he stops though leaving Regal flinching with his eyes closed. Goldberg spins him around and leaves the ring..... Booker off the top rope.... Missile Dropkick, the cover, 1,2,3! Hennig proceeds to go to work on the arm of Davey Boy wearing him down with hold after hold. Smith makes a very late comeback and sets up Hennig for his Vertical Suplex, Hennig slips out though and reveres into a PerfectPlex. Hennig is groggy so the cover is late... 1,2.. Davey Boy kicks out! Hennig in frustration locks on the figure four leg lock, The British Bulldog struggles for the ropes. He reaches the bottom rope but Hennig pulls him off, Davey Boy screams in pain fighting the hold. Hennig out of sight of the referee uses a rope as leverage applying even more pressure, Goldberg jumps onto the apron and removes Hennigs hand but the damage has been done. Hennig picks up a limping Davey Boy, another Perfect Plex, and another! Two in a row and three in total Hennig has gone ballistic, 1,2,3. The rules are announced over the loud speaker by Bruce Buffer and the match is underway to a fury of punches. Before long the brawl has spilled outside and over the barrier parting the crowd. A wild brawl ensues all over the arena into the back and even the parking lot before both men make a return in dramatic fashion tumbling through the curtain onto the stage. Neither man relents as the slug-fest continues both now teetering on the edge of the stage facing a 15 foot drop off the Starrcade XV set. Savage with a thumb to the eyes stuns DDP, the Macho Man pulls out a tv monitor from the nearby announcers desk and levels DDP. Savage now places an unconcious DDP onto the announcers table and orders referee Nick Patrick to stp his ten count, Patrick in counfusion continues the count anyway but Savage grabs him by the throat and threatens him with the 15 foot fall. Patrick doesn't argue, agreeing with a berserk Macho Man he stops his ten count on DDP. Savage looks to the crowd and lets off a mighty "Ooooh yeeeeeaaaah" Macho Spin, he points to the Starrcade sign hanging high above the entrance curtain. Savage begins the what looks to be 20 foot climb with the crowd in hysterics, Macho Man reaches the top of the StarrcadeXV logo, lets out one more "Oooh yeeeeeaaaaah" and makes an insane leap off.... DDP has used the time to recover and rolls off the table..... Savage goes crashing through! Patrick makes the ten count as paramedics and officials rush to Savage's aid. Hall is next but Scott Steiner charges the ladder sending Hall to crotch himself on the top rope. Nash with a big boot to Scott Steiner, "Big Sexy" looks to climb the ladder but is slow and cumbersome. Rick makes a recovery and nails Nash with a chair in the back. Hall is back in, Outsider's Edge on Rick Steiner, Hall climbs the ladder, he grabs the belt and the bell rings. All three announcers did a great job of giving the match an important feel. Both try again with the same result, not being the smartest tools in the shed they attempt it another time... this time Sid uses a little logic and moves out of the way sending The Giant over the top rope . The brawl moves to the outside where Sid goes back on the attack, Sid grabs Giant by the back of the head and goes to ram it into the ringpost.... Giant stops it though and delivers and elbow to Sid's ribs. Giant grips his hand around the neck of Vicious, Choke Slam onto the steel ringstairs! Sting launches Hogan back into his corner leaving the Icon reeling and temporarily stunned. Hogan charges but Sting ducks, the two men now running the ropes at there top speed. A criss cross ends with a Hogan bodyslam. Sting no-sells it, they criss cross again, then Sting scoopslams Hollywood. Sting clotheslines Hogan to the floor, and Hulk complains to special referee Bret Hart of a back injury. Hart gives Hogan his time to recover and checks the World Champion to continue, Hogan makes a miraculous recovery and rushes an oblivious Sting taking control of the match. Hogan works a chinlock before a collision puts both men down. Sting "hulks up" with three clotheslines and a shoulderblock, but instead of going for the scorpion Splash, he hits a suplex for two. Sting goes to aplly the Scorpion Deathlock but Hogan escapes, runs the ropes, and Bret Hart is bumped! The entire nWo poor down the ramp, Goldberg jumps into the ring though and stops them in their tracks. Hart recovers and gets to his feet, "The Hitman" gives Hollywood a stone cold stare and turns to the nWo on the outside taking up position next to a fired up Goldberg. DiBiase, Regal, Konnan and Guerrero all take one look at Goldberg and retreat back up the ramp. Hennig and Bagwell rush into the ring, Buff is speared by Goldberg and Hennig runs into a huge running belly to belly delivered by Bret Hart. Meanwhile Nash and Hall enter the ring from the opposite side and nail Sting in the back of the head with his own baseball bat! The Outsiders turn to face Goldberg and Hart, they look at eachother, grin and duck out of the ring waving off the WCW enforcers as not worth their time, then make their way to the back. The ring is cleared and once again it's back to Hogan vs Sting, one on one. Hogan creeps back to his corner and begs Sting for mercy, Sting grabs Hollywood by what little hair he has left and picks him up for a backdrop, Hogan winces in pain clutching his back. Sting hits a running bulldog and the Stinger Splash, but it only gets two. Hogan hulks up, hits the big boot and goes for the leg drop, Hogan nails it! 1,2.... Sting kicks out! He quickly gets to his feet, goes off the ropes and hits a clothesline, another clothesline, he sends Hollywood back into the corner, a Scorpion Splash, into the opposite corner, another Scorpion Splash! A great event. I like how you wrote just enough of each match to get a good feeling of it and build just enough tension to get to the ending. It's still early in the diary to judge the actual results of the match, but I think they are pretty much in line of what's coming (Goldberg monster push, Booker T going solo, The Outsiders taking over the tag division once again, etc). And geez... I almost had forgotten how little sense Macho Man's promos made. I'm a bit surprised the Horsemen didn't even show up, I thought there were gonna be involved at some point.

I'm so, so so glad Sting went over... even though the middle of the match was a schmoz, (obviously it builds the story I think), but him getting over without lying in the ring for a minute unconcious from a weak leg drop, and then Hart making out it was a quick count (WTF was up with that?), this was good... Sting went over clean. Getting an A rating in front of 75,000, mate that's good to be good for WCW. Congratulations on a wicked ending.

Really a perfect ending. I like the spraypainting Hogan to. It adds a nice bit of justice to it all. It's going to be fun to see how you use the NWO from here on out. Do they go back to their winning ways, or fade into obscurity.
