IWA:Tri-State - Steve Corino's Vision

Recommended Posts

2007 was going to be his last year. Steve Corino was to leave wrestling for good; or at least that was the plan. The 'King Of Old School' had won over 60 titles since he started wrestling in 1994. Yet now at the age of 34 he could see the end of the road. His great career was coming to an end. The world of pro wrestling was losing it's shine. WWE was putting the same old junk on TV. TNA, the bright future of wrestling was becoming a WCW reunion. Even the indy scene was begining to dry up. Steve could have no more of it. That was until he got a call from Ian Rotten, owner of IWA: Midsouth. The two agreed on the state of the business with familiar feelings toward what it had become. Ian though had an idea to stop the decline. He believed to save wrestling would be to show what wrestling really is at what was once the heart of it's fanbase, the Tri-State. Ian presented his grand scheme to which Cornio soon agreed. So with Ian's idea and Corino's vision of a perfect product, along with his life savings, $250,000, IWA: MS' sister promotion opened; IWA: Tri-State was born. Ok, so here is some out of character house keeping stuff. This morning I was talking online with a friend who didn't believe me TEW 2007 was better than Promotion Wars. It came to for him that TEW had no real world. I cited how Bobinc had tons of real world databases. His witty remark was 'Then why do you only play in that made up cartoon land?". Now that 'made up cartoon land' would be the Cornellverse which I considermy happy place and I have no problem with. But I thought about his comment...in TEW 2007 I have never done anything real world. Back in TEW 2005 I only did real world after RaveX (RIP) came out. All the classic memories, Austin Aries and CM Punk trading the NWA title back and fourth, Chris Jericho and the Rock both coming back to wrestling to have a fued that rocked the entire business off it's feet, and who can ever forget firing that snot nosed punk Teddy Hart. But in the next generation I don't have any of that...yet. So I am putting my DAVE story on the shelf and giving the real world a shot. I hope you join me for the journey. Up Next: The Vision that is Steve Corino's wonder product!

The basis for the success for a promotion in the eyes of Steve Corino was in it's product. As owner of IWA: Tri-State Steve put together his dream product for the rebirth of indy wrestling. Traditional - Very Low Mainstream - None Comedy - None Cult - Key Feature Risque - None Modern - Key Feature Realism - Very Low Hyper Realism - None Hardcore - Low Lucha Libre - Low Daredevil - Medium Match Danger - 80% Match Intensity - 80% Match Ratio - 90% Starting Money - $250,000 Prestige - 10% Popularity; Mid Atlantic - 10% New England - 20% Tri-State - 35% Ontario-10% Kanto-10% The Rest - 0% Now Corino had his product and a company, he just needed a booker. He knew anyone who had been booking for another promotion would give the promotion a tint of where they had been done previously. He needed a young up start. He looked around on the web a bit and found an 18 year old who was coming up with some interesting ideas for a made up promotion he was playing in a booking sim that had an almost identical product. That's where I come in. My name is Tony Guidotti and I am IWA: Tri-State's head booker. Enough about me though, this is a story about Steve's dream and the promotion that was his engine to reach it. Kid, I have seen your work. You can do some good stuff, so I am putting you in full charge of booking. But I have some rules for you; 1. I have alot of money in this company so I don't want it dropping in size in the next year. 2. Remember what I just said about all my money being in this company? Don't put tis boat in debt in the next two years. 3. I don't want any back yard punks in my company, only people with a grasp of the basics. 4. And I don't want any drug users in my company, at all, what so ever. Keep that in check and you should do fine. Now I will wrestle for you for a while but after that I am backstage only. Also, my sister Allison Danger is on contract and she will do whatever she is needed for. Don't look at me kid, go find a roster!

One thing that's screaming at the top of it's lungs at me right now, is why the HELL does a promotion that's supposed to showcase "what wrestling really is", have Traditional and Realism at Very Low? Surely the King of the Old School would never allow that, let alone suggest it, in his own promotion? :p
One thing that's screaming at the top of it's lungs at me right now, is why the HELL does a promotion that's supposed to showcase "what wrestling really is", have Traditional and Realism at Very Low? Surely the King of the Old School would never allow that, let alone suggest it, in his own promotion? :p
Not Kayfabe Response-I guess you could say that is bookers peferance? :D Kayfabe Response-While dreaming up the way he wanted the promotion to be he looked at what made other promotions succesful. He sees how people react to things like high flying and adds some of that in. He sees the success of CZW and hardcore and as much as he is against it adds it in. He looks around though and he can see that old school is not as popular as it was but he left a niche of his company open for since it is his favorite style. He knows an all traditional old school promotion will in the end not succeed so he only puts some in his company. Remember that he is not just creating Cornio's Vision of what 'The King Of Old School' is the greatest at, but rather what will save and revolutionize wrestling. Hopefully those answers clarify the reasoning for the product. :) Anyone reading can shout out people you want on the initial roster. I am sending out tons of requests but if you want someone just shout em out and I may look into it.
Eddie Kingston turned you down? :( How about Billy Reil, is he still in the data? ¬_¬ He LOOKS like Eddie Kingston... a bit. Umm, Cheech and Cloudy? Pelle Primeau?
Without Eddie I couldn't complete BLK OUT :( . Cheech and Cloudy I actually sent requests to but they were not given jobs as they just aren't good enough for what Steve wants. There will be a new Special K though ;) as they are my favorite faction of all time (I mark for Deranged). I didn't send a request to Pelle, he is actually a pretty good wrestler live, but I just didn't have a spot for him at this time. You gave out how many jobs! It was more of an angry statement than a question. Yep, a week into the job and I already was in trouble. Sitting there with the Pro Wrestling Illustrated and all of Steve's resourses (His life savings and all of the connections he has made) was like being a kid in a candy store, or any member of the ROH faction Special K at a Rave, whatever analogy works for you. In short I had hired 14 more men than planned and a few extra women. Enough... I'll show you enough! -'This Is Wrestling' will be held on Tuesday, Week 2, October, 2007. World Wrestling News -Both IWA:MS and IWA:TS run their big tournaments in October. While the Steve Corino Invitational is on the 2nd week of the month the Ted Petty Invitational from the Midsouth is on the first. Milano Collection AT wins the IWA:MS Title in the midcard and Brandon Thomaselli won the tournament. The show got a D-. -New promotions are springing up with 5SSW (Womens, Japan), WWW (Womens, Canada), SWE (Garbage, UK), BPW (Family, Europe), and ROF (Pure, UK) all opening their doors. Dana White of UFC fame has taken over ROF, Eric Bischoff grabbed SWE, and Jerry Jarrett took the reigns of BPW-Europe has an interesting battle for dominance as these small promotions search for their niche. -Alex Shelley continues to defend his ROH World title in several good matches with Nigel and a solid three match series with Austin Aries. -Big news from WWE No Mercy-Ric Flair wins his 17th world title in a B- main event. The show got a 6.48 PPV rating and was a great B- show. Victoria also became the womens champ earlier in the card. *I have the editor for WMMA right now but I will get the show up tonight before I play with that, so watch for it soon. Edit:Running the show-Teddy Hart has no showed... Double Edit-I am in debate, and Saturdays mean elimination rounds. In other words if I want to win more trophies the rest of the show must wait until tomorrow as I need sleep.

Note One-Teddy Hart no showed the event... Note Two-Announcing duties are being shared by-Lenny Leonard, Julius Smokes, Sexxxy Eddie, Steve Corino, Allison Danger, and Alex Shelley. Note Three-My booking team is made of Ace Steel, LuFisto, Mike Quackenbush, Steve Corino, and Taka Michinoku. Note Four-Steve Corino and Taka worked as road agents. This Is Wrestling Tuesday, Week 2, October, 2007 Held In Front Of 1,774 At The Rose Hill Gym In The Tri-State Ruckus wins the SpotFest in 17:14 A great hot match to start off the show. This one lived up to the name as these high flyers let it all hang out. The replacement for Teddy Hart was ‘The Wonder Kid’ Johnny Storm who started it out against The Amazing Red. Red is consistently one of the most impressive in the match but was eliminated after a Code Red was revered into a Play of the Day by Elix Skipper. Javi-Air and Deranged worked well together but were eliminated as a result of a one man firefly (top rope flipping arm bar) given by Jonny Storm to Josh Abercrombie who landed on his team mates allowing Jonny to pin all three at once. This was shortly after Josh took out Taiji with a Taliban backpack. Finish saw Ruckus and Human Tornado face of evenly. Eventually Sabian came out and snuck behind Tornado giving a low blow. Tornado turned his back on Ruckus and no sold the shot pimp slapping Sabian who fell on all fours. Ruckus ran past Tornado, off the ropes, used Sabian as a spring board and did a flipping backbreaker move that doesn’t even have a name. He then jumped off Sabian’s back once more this time with a 450 splash for the win to become the first ever IWA:TS Aerial division champion. C- Alex Shelley defeated Kid Kash in 8:47 The first round one tournament match. Both high flying and technical from the guys in this one. The Ring of Honor world champion moves on after a submission victory with a Shellshock. C+ John Walters defeated Jimmy Rave in 12:05 A showcase of holds and escapes as John Walters returns to wrestling after a hiatus. Not sure why the bad rating would be other than lack of name from Walters. Jimmy was looking like the winner when John got him with a drop over toehold from the ground and got in a Sharpshooter in the middle of the ring for the upset victory. D Steve Corino defeated Donovan Morgan in 12:58 Donovan came in from Japan for this match. He showed how he has improved since leaving the US but it wasn’t enough to put away the much more experienced Steve. D+ Trent Acid defeated Sexxxy Eddy in 6:44 A better match than I expected from two dark horses in the tournament. A good showcase for both men. The finish for the match was the Triple Xpress going for a lionsault flying knee to Acid but Eddie instead got a Mafia kick while flying upside down. Trent picked him up to only drop him back down in an inverted brain buster for the win. C- Mike Quackenbush defeated Tony Mamaluke in 10:57 I wanted better out of these two but what can I say. They actually had good chemistry in this one. Tony succumbed to the Quackendriver after Mike just wouldn’t give in to any his vast supply of arm bars. D+ Taka Michinoku defeated Frankie Kazarian in 8:50 Frankie never stood a chance. Taka had tons of speed and showed the world that he was held down by the WWF in his time there. Besides that Kazarian was off his game. After running circles around his opponent Taka brought him down and made him tap to a basic face lock. C BJ Whitmer defeated Danny Maff in 8:34 Danny came back to wrestling after being blacklisted by Homicide. The first match of the night to showcase power rather than speed. Good story of BJ trying to get the Exploder but Danny being to big. In the end he hit it after sliding out of the Burning Hammer. D+ Ace Steel defeated Roderick Strong in 14:02 The last round one match. The ‘Messiah of the Backbreaker’ met the trainer of the Second City Saints. Ace and Roddy put out a watch able match. Roderick went for an under hook backbreaker but as he did it Ace got his head and turned it into a spike DDT. D+ Dead Presidents defeated Jimmy Jacobs and Ricky Reyes in 7:21 These were the only four guys without matches so we put them here. Jimmy and Lacey are allegedly a bad team so this may be her first and last time managing him. Ricky was frustrated by Jimmy constantly paying attention to Lacey and hit him with a kick to the head before walking to the back. Boog Washington defeated Jimmy by pinfall with The Payroll. D LuFisto defeated Allison Danger in 8:31 This was the first real ‘ugly’ match of the night. They didn’t click at all and most of the crowd just used it to stretch their legs and check out the bathrooms. LuFisto wins by pinfall with a Diving Star and receives the IWA: Tri-State Women’s title. E+ John Walters defeated Alex Shelley in 8:50 When I saw the rating to the match I was relieved that it didn’t bomb like the last Walters match. Alex moved away from flying and to a methodical technical heel. Alex was throwing John into the ropes and he put his head down, John came back and dropped him on his head. The ref did a quick three count and John had gotten another upset and put himself in the finals. C- Steve Corino defeated Trent Acid in 7:42 The show continued to regain momentum after the women’s match here. Trent tried his best to not get in a technical lock up with ‘The King Of Old School’. Eventually Steve ducked a Mafia kick catching the leg and used it to get Acid to the mat. From here he systematically worked him over until he had his back and locked in a sleeper. Trent becomes non responsive and Steve moves on to the finals. C- Mike Quackenbush defeated Taka Michinoku in 17:06 I wanted this to be one of the real showcase, buy the DVD for this match type of match. It didn’t reach that standard but was solid. C- Ace Steel defeated BJ Whitmer in 5:50 Both of these guys are off their game tonight. This match was kept short with Ace turning the setup for BJ’s Exploder into a DDT. D Team CZW defeated Irish Airborne in 10:53 Irish Airborne dominated from the air and with good double teams and fast tags. CZW worked as an easy catalyst for Nate and Nick to get over as big heels. Nick caught Jake Crist coming off of a spring board and through him over his head knocking the ref out of the ring. Dave jumped in the ring but was clobbered by Nick who had a stop sign tossed to him by Nate. Nate Webb climbed to the top and hit a moonsault with a chair between him and Dave at impact. Nick pulled the chair out of the ring as the referee rolled back in making the three count. Team CZW win the IWA: Tri-State Tag Team titles and get over a big time heels. D+ Ace Steel defeated Mike Quackenbush, Steve Corino and John Walters in 29:56 This match fell apart. Quack, Ace, and John all are underperforming tonight and together the match lost its flow. The only story in the contest was the 30 minute time limit and the digital clock that was marking the time of the match closer to zero. Many figured it would draw as the time came to a close. Steve was on the outside brawling with Quack when Ace Steel hit John with a DDT out of nowhere to win the Steve Corino Invitational and the IWA: Tri-State Championship. D+ Final Rating D Notes-I was disappointed with this show. A lot of the matches were not as good as planned, namely the main event. With all things relevant the SpotFest came out great like I expected and the match I worried for most, the tag title match, shined much brighter than I thought previously. The women’s match made my eyes bleed and the main event ruined the show. Ace winning both made their prestige go down. I hope he can find his stride in the company.
