WCW 1998: A prequel to "Death of WCW"

Recommended Posts

Thanks fellas. It also helps me keep things interesting in my own mind too  Glad to see you've noticed Thrillapalooza in your tips there angel, I'm pretty keen to evolve the midcard to give more definitive characters. There's a few great bookers on here who amaze me that they have a lot of great semi main events and main events where you're struggling to be fully certain of the result because of the intrigue and the depth their characters have, and thats part of the next phase involving Thrillapalooza I'm looking to incorporate. Cheers.

We cut backstage, to the entrance to the arena where. We flash past Curt Hennig, who is walking in talking to Scott Hall. "Look, believe me pal," Hennig says, barely audibly. We can't hear Hall's response, but this was in the corner of the camera and clearly not what we are here for. No, instead we are here to see amongst a pile of Harley's a black limousine pull up. A chaffeur hops out, and opens up the back door, to reveal the Four Horsemen themselves. "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!", Flair cries out, as the man in the blue sequined robe leads his chargers through the entrance. ------------------------ A graphic comes up with the talking heads 'Iron' Mike Tenay, Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan and 'American Dream' Dusty Rhodes highlighting that tonight, in a special main event, 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair would team with his Four Horsemen ally and United States Champion 'Rabid Wolverine' Chris Benoit to take on the WCW World Heavyweight Champion 'Lionheart' Chris Jericho and Bret 'The Hitman' Hart. ------------------------- We continue to watch the Horsemen walk in, before they are stopped by 'Mean' Gene Okerlund, for an interview live here on Thunder. "Guys, Ric, if you wouldn't mind a few words for the audience and the millions watching across the world," Okerlund comments. "Tonight Chris Benoit and Ric Flair, tonight you will face up to Chris Jericho and Bret Hart, two of the best pound for pound wrestlers of the last decade in a special Thunder exclusive main event. Chris Benoit, firstly, of late you have found yourself falling victim to the Outsider himself, Scott Hall of the nWo who of course will face you one on one at Road Wild for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship. I noticed when you walked in here that you had a very noticeable limp, and of course you did not wrestle last Monday Night. How are you holding up heading not only into tonight's classic main event, but also your Championship defence at Road Wild?" Chris Benoit snarls, and cracks his neck, before uncomfortably looking forward. "It's like this Gene," Benoit comments. "When you are a Horsemen, you always find a way to win. It's in our spirit, it's in our blood, this man here with me, he survived a broken neck. Scott Hall, you are gonna find ooouuutt very soon the wrath of the Rabid Wolverine...." Okerlund turns to Flair, thankfully, as Benoit was extremely uncomfortable. "MEAN WOOOOOOOOOOOOO BY GOD GENE! We are just over one week away from Road Wild pal, and we find ourselves in another Four Horsemen stronghold brother. Somebody told me... WOOOOOOOOOOOO... that the Four Horsemen would be partying in Madison, Wisconsin? WOOOOOOOOOOO, is it true Gene? You see brother, this great city was named after a great founding father pal, and that to me speaks of tradition. And just like the founding fathers themselves, the Four Horsemen are tradition brother. The more things change the more things stay the same, and as you look around WCW... WOOOOOOOOOOOOO... you still see snakes, you still see cowards, you still bigots. But you also still see the Four Horsemen holding together the traditions of professional wrestling, the same virtuous values our founding fathers had in creating wrestling with liberty for all. So tonight, brother, tonight the Four Horsemen, we recommence the road to virtue, the road to liberty, the road to vow to destroy corrupt corporation types who snake charm their way through life by shreding the liberty bestowed upon us. That includes you, Bret Hart. It includes you brother, you see when Sting offered the olive branch you snake eyes'd him. Brother, you call yourself the best there is, the best there was, the best there ever will be, but tonight you will be taken to school by the dirtiest player in the game, the original and still the best. MEAN WOOOOO BY GOD GENE, you may not always agree with slick Ric, you may see him as a wheeling dealing, limousine riding, jet flying, son of a gun... WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... and brother its correct I am the dirtiest player in the game, but tonight the Four Horsemen show diamonds are forever...and so is liberty for all! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" --------------------- Backstage, after the break, Kimberly Page is caught spraying some perfume. We can see a production crew, who are filming Kimberly for the nWo perfume advert. "CUT!" "Thank god," she says. "This is good product, good product. Sexy. Everything a bad girl like me could ever dream of..." ---------------------- Billy Kidman is led down to ringside by Ryan Lynn, the sister of Jerry Lynn and valet to Thrillapalooza. She leads Kidman to the ring who is bouncing around, and opens the middle rope for her client in a very seductive manner.
Thrillapalooza Invitational Ladder Match 'Wipeout' Evan Karagias v Billy Kidman Evan Karagias from Pipeline Feva is the first to take on Kidman in an official Thrillapalooza ladder match. The commentators hype all the members of Thrillapalooza, and this match unfolds as an excellent match full of numerous high spots. Probably not a match full of purposeful psychology, which is its major let down, but a very quick paced match. Good use of the ladder, but Karagias was always on the backfoot against Kidman who after a few scuttled attempts climbed up the ladder to grab the nonsensical Thrillapalooza flag. They were fighting for a flag? THat was kinda lame, but what was not was Kidman's performance. Tonight he had genuine funk, a little added risque to his performance, and it got a good response from the crowd. Result: Your winner, Billy Kidman
Backstage, Kimberly Page again enters the ladies dressing room, where the petite and innocent Miss Elizabeth is applying some last second make up. "You need it..." Miss Elizabeth turns around, with a scent of a tear in her eye, almost pleadingly for Kim to go away. "Have you heard? Yeah, you know that I'm now the nWo Perfume gal. How do you like that? Its happening before your very eyes Liz, I'm becoming the new... you. I'm becoming the new bad girl of professional wrestling Liz... and there's nothing.... ...... NOTHING..... you can do about it...." Kimberly turns to leave a clearly relieved Elizabeth, before turning back for one passing shot. "You should consider it... $129 per bottle Liz, lets just say.... you need it." Kimberly gives a wickedly evil smile, as we cut away. The commentators fuss that of course Miss Elizabeth was never the bad girl of wrestling and never had to stoop to any levels to be known for her beauty and patronage to the fans of professional wrestling. ------------------ Backstage, there is a knock at the door marked 'Kurt Angle.' The door opens, Kurt Angle is of course inside. We look to see a frisbee being handed to him, we turn back to see a laughing Masahiro Chono. "You so wong mister Angle, so wong. Heres a fwisbee for you and your lady friend... I hear you like rery much." Angle looks at the frisbee and smiles, before snapping and throwing it to the ground. "What do you want?" Angle fumes. "Want? Oh no, nothing mister Angle. You entertain us alwedy...." Chono then grabs Angle by the scruff of the neck. "If I ever want anything mister Angle, you know about it when I kick your [BEEP] all over the wing, you hear..?" Chono thrusts him back into the room and slams the door... Konnan had a target on his head as the clearly incensed Savage dominated from go to woe, ending it with the Flying Elbow Smash. Result: Your winner, Randy Savage
Post match, Savage angrily threw Konnan out of the ring, before grabbing a microphone. "OOOOOH YEEAAAAAHHHH! The madness is running wild yeah. I feel it in the palm of my hand yeah. Diamond Dallas Page, you have made a bad mistake yeah letting your wife off her leash. This time Diamond Dallas Page in front of the largest Pay-Per-View audience in the world yeah at Sturgis, Dakota... DIG IT... yeah you will find out that within the madness yeah is a streak so wild that it will snap you like I snap a Slim Jims yeah. Dallas Page yeah I'm coming for ya yeah because you won't come for me yeah no you send your pooch to rile me up like the coward ya are! And I'm going to destroy you for once and for all yeah and when I end you with your eyes glazed staring up at the ring lights yeah and the referee counting one two three you will find out why I am... the LORD AND MASTER OF THE RING yeah...REVENGE beckons the Macho Man YEAH!"
WCW Television Championship Eddie Guerrero (c) v Disco Inferno After the break, Disco Inferno wrestled his best match in the last month or so. He really appeared to be putting in, and he showed just how good a wrestler this guy can be. But after eight minutes of thoroughly good back and forth entertainment and numerous near falls from both sides, Disco lost focus again, and allowed Eddie to hit the triple snap suplexes, followed by the Brainbuster DDT, and finally finishing it off with the Flying Frogsplash. Result: Your winner, and STILL WCW Television Champion, Eddie Guerrero
Backstage, 'Mean' Gene Okerlund stands by with 'Lord' Steven Regal who stands cloaked in his Union Jack robe, and looking as conceited as possible. "Alright, I thank you, 'Lord' Steven Regal, you have just witnessed a great mat.." "I've witnessed what? A shambles, that's what. A cowardly shambles. A man like Disco Inferno needs to be treated like the subordinate he is, and if he had have come up against a British gentry like myself that chap would find out why I'm the toughest man this side of Blackpool. Eddie Guerrero, do you truly call yourself a Champion? Show yourself young man, show your true colours. Where is your integrity, where is your lineage? What you are is nothing but a disgrace to our commander the elegant Queen Elizabeth herself, and at Road Wild, Eddie Guerrero, I have been commissioned under license by the Queen herself to be the man to take you down. Yes, blimey, I may have to contend also with Dean Malenko, but I am of noble class and a willing subordinate of the Queen so at Road Wild as those disgusting, dust covered Harley's howl at ringside, Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko one of you men will find out a thing or two about Black Pudding, and a Blackpool Headbutt, as I take back the Championship to our loyal Queen herself!"
#1 Contendership to the WCW Cruiserweight Championship Juventud Guerrera v Psicosis Juvi exhibited a new lease of life tonight in his first appearance as a member of Thrillapalooza, and thus with Psicosis' natural wrestling style this became just an amazing latino luchadore plancha-a-thon. If you thought Kidman and Karagias was good earlier, this was excitement plus. It appeared that Juventud would do anything to please the crowd, literally would die if it would give them a high spot to enthuse over, the commentators hammed over Juventud's approach and the Thrillapalooza spirit riding through him. Psicosis was desperate for a shot at his sometimes ally, and mostly entrenched rival, but unfortunately missed out on the big pay day when Juvi took control with a Juvi Driver, hauled him to the corner and hit the 450 Splash for the 1..2...3. Result: Your winner, Juventud Guerrera
Backstage, this time it is 'Big Sexy' Kevin Nash we find on the end of a vicious attack. Raven throws a trolley at him, and then grabs him by the hair and throws him shoulder first into a garbage dumpster! "So it is written, so it shall come to pass. You want to pick a fight with the true revolution, Kevin? At Road Wild, you will find out about despair and pain, as I drive him the fans revolution... Quoth the Raven, Nevermore."
The Extreme Innovators (Perry Saturn and 'The Innovator of Offence' Chris Kanyon) v The Steiner Brothers A very good match as far as tag matches go, sometimes tag matches can be a little slow, and a little drawn out, but the Extreme Innovators brought a lot of energy to this showdown against the tag team franchise of professional wrestling. However despite a gutsy performance, the Steiner brothers experience won through with Rick hitting the Steiner Bulldog on Perry Saturn to grab a determined win. Result: Your winner, The Steiner Brothers
Toe-to-toe action as we cut straight to the carpark! This is completely unscripted, unscheduled, this is chaos the commentators announce as the Giant and Goldberg find themselves locked in a bitter toe to toe fist fight, between Chevrolets, Buicks, Mercedez, you name it, they're here. We cut inside and find Doug Dillenger and the Fun Police, but they're unable to find out exactly where Goldberg and the Giant are and the brawl ensues. Dillenger inside is desperately asking the head of production where the feed is coming from, and after a period of three or four minutes or brutality finally it seems a thousand of Dillenger's henchmen are on the scene to interrupt. Even when they interrupt the tension is electric and the Giant spits at Goldberg who tries to break free. Eventually, both men have to be cuffed to try and restore some sanity! Wow!
WCW World Heavyweight Champion 'Lionheart' Chris Jericho and Bret 'The Hitman' Hart v 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair and WCW United States Champion 'Rabid Wolverine' Chris Benoit And the tension for the evening comes to a head with the main event. Everyone has a reason for a bitter rivalry here. With Benoit, Hart and Jericho it is arguably the top three men in WCW right now. Not only that, they are the three best wrestlers from Canada. Each sees each other as a bitter disappointment to the nature of their patronage, and here with Ric Flair he remembers the bitter magazine articles traded back and forth between he and Bret Hart over the throwaway disrespect comments stemming back from their time together in Flair's WWF run. At the centre of it all is the simmering feud between the Horsemen and the nWo for the control of WCW, and of course Bret Hart lends himself as the probable game changer as a manipulative free agent who shows no willingness to pick a side despite previously vowing to clear WCW of the nWo. Not only that, but these four guys are arguably the best wrestlers full stop, forgetting even push status in WCW. Flair's experience and guile, his willingness to take a bump for a spot, Benoit's complete all round arsenal, Jericho's energy and mat game, and Bret Hart's logical manipulation of the ring, this was a great match to end Thunder. After 16 minutes of back and forth action, Jericho grabbed the World Heavyweight Championship and looked to ram it into the head of Ric Flair, but Flair ducked, Jericho slammed Hart accidentally, and Flair then gave Jericho a nice low bow. Ouch, the dirtiest player in the game strikes again. With Hart dazed, Flair covered...1...2....3! Result: Your winners, Ric Flair and Chris Benoit
Post match, with Flair and Benoit rolling out of the ring and celebrating, Jericho grabbed his World Heavyweight Championship and stood anxiously, almost pleadingly innocently over the body of Bret Hart. Hart finally came around, and Jericho held out a hand, but instead of helping him up he repealed and started throwing punches at the head of Bret Hart... The cameras got in close to hear Jericho say .. "You stained my Championship! You stained my Championship!", as Hart fought to fight back against Jericho, as we faded to black...

...
Eric Bischoff appeared last night on Atlanta Radio 107.4 FM's sports hour. The following is a transcript of the interview conducted by host Mr Brownstone, please feel free also to click here for the audio of this interview. Brownstone: Eric Bischoff, thank you for joining us here tonight on another warm Atlanta summer's night. I understand you have quite a busy schedule at the moment, and so you are joining us tonight live from Milwaukee, WI where of course you and the nWo are on a road trip towards the Road Wild PPV at Sturgis, South Dakota, so again, thank you for appearing. Bischoff: My pleasure, it's been a long long journey but good fun none the less. Brownstone: Of course, you know I haven't really brought you on to discuss your road trip, right..? Bischoff: I was under the impression that's all we were going to talk about... Brownstone: Really? Bischoff: Well, no, I gathered you would want to talk about the world of professional wrestling amongst other things. Brownstone: Good guess, Eric. Firstly, how are things proceeding in your eyes towards the Road Wild Pay-Per-View? Bischoff: Well, this particular Pay-Per-View is a very enjoyable one for me. Its not often in my busy schedule that I get to ham it up on the great highways of this country, and its even more infrequent that you get to do it and get paid for it. Truthfully, this role is a very intensive role and you very rarely get time away, I can't remember the last period of vacation I have had was so this is a great time for me. As far as the Pay-Per-View itself goes, I'm particularly comfortable with where we are headed as a company, and of course I'm very happy with the strengths we have within the New World Order. Sturgis is strategically very different than our other Pay-Per-Views in so many ways so it has its own operational concerns, but generally this is my happiest time of the year. Brownstone: Your relationship these past six or seven months appear to have been particularly strained with Ric Flair... Bischoff: Yeah well.. You know, Ric and I see things completely differently. But one way or another we'll find a way to move past them. Brownstone: Could that involve seeing the end of Flair? Bischoff: Look, maybe, you never really know. I have my views, he has his, I'd rather just leave them at that. Brownstone: Is that on purely a professional in character perspective Eric, or does Eric Bischoff the man share issues with Ric Flair? Bischoff: I'd rather not really get into that, it is what it is. Brownstone: Fair enough, I guess. Look, Eric I viewed wcw.com this past Friday and Jeremy Borash stated that he believed two new faces would appear at Nitro. Can you confirm or deny.. Bischoff: I can.. well, look, I'd like people to tune into the show. Lets just say if they're expecting two brand new signings to appear, then they're going to be pleasantly surprised. Brownstone: What scale are these guys on.. like are they main eventers, midcarders...? Bischoff: These guys are big names, or at least will be big names once they get the WCW exposure they deserve. You know, I've heard a few names bandied around, but the ones I have heard are not the guys and it may be a little more shocking than even the people think. Brownstone: Will you elaborate as to where they are from... you know, WWF, ECW, Japan..? Bischoff: Again, I'd love to, but I'm really not at liberty to announce who they are or any real particulars about them except they both will become stars in WCW. Brownstone: Are you saying they're not stars already? Bischoff: Not at all. Not at all. Brownstone: Alright, moving along, do you think these signings are going to cause controversy in the industry? Bischoff: Look, I'm not really concerned about that. That said, this industry has for far too long been far too loyalty based. It became staged, wrestlers were in the same promotion, doing the same thing, and crowds were diminishing. What have we done? We've freshened it up. Do I hate Vince McMahon, do I hate Paully Heyman? No, of course not. Do I respect them? Yeah, on certain things I do. Would I run them out of business if I had a chance? Absolutely. My job is to improve this promotion as much as possible, thats based on financials, thats based on market share, its based on television viewership, and right now, for the first time in its history I genuinely believe change is occurring due to the nature of this so called war. Make no bones about it, Paully might lose out, Vince might lose out, I won't... You know why? I have Billionaire Ted backing me. But if they lose out, so be it, in my genuine opinion, the world of wrestling for the fans, for the wrestlers is right now being improved by myself, Ted and Mark Daniels. Brownstone: Is that a direct response to the comments made by Paul Heyman and Bubba Ray this past week? Bischoff: Absolutely, without a doubt. You can't sit in glass houses throwing rocks and not expect that I won't hear the crack. Its desperation. But Paul knows it, the more he forces the war upon himself the more he becomes involved and the more exposed he becomes. Do I think Paul has the finances to sustain going head to head with us? No, of course not. But that's Paul Heyman for you, he'd throw himself into suicide if it meant perpetuating this cult myth of his. Brownstone: Do you care how the industry perceives you after these types of comments? Bischoff: No. I really don't. The fact is I get paid well, and its going to remain that way because I have Billionaire Ted backing me. Vince, Paully, what do they have? I can say what I want, I'm never going to work for either of them, frankly I doubt they'll be willing enough to liberate themselves to work with me either. Brownstone: Will there be more names, I mean if there's one criticism I could throw is that for 6-7 months there was not many additions, now we're seeing Jushin Lyger, we're seeing Jerry Lynn, Mike Awesome, Kurt Angle... Bischoff: Well, the industry evolves. And frankly we noticed a couple of guys that could really add something to us. Brownstone: And hurt the others? Bischoff: Look, maybe, but thats not the overall intent. Really, as much as this is a war, and while some of the comments from over the border are direct and hoarse, the fact is this is business and the signatures are to give us a more complete roster. Brownstone: More complete roster.. I mean, Eric, how many people do you need on the roster? Bischoff: The fact is we have two televised shows each week, we have numerous house shows, we have a lot of commitments. We have the revenues to cover it, we're gaining in every economic KPI possible, frankly we have more money than Davy Crockett and if we wanted half the ECW or WWF roster, I'm sure we could have 'em, but the fact is we go for who is good for us. Brownstone: I understand your time is short Eric Bischoff, I thank you again for coming on the show tonight, after these commercial interests, we're gonna open up the lines. 555-6984, you know what to do... Hit more home runs than the other guy. The catch cry of Ted Turner, words that resonated in the mind of Mark Daniels as he moved through another phase of the highly ambitious, highly deceitful, highly innovative strategy that they devised that morning back in January in front of Ted himself. The strategic direction he thought over night after night as he coiled trying to find a way to find sleep. "It's got to be tip-top! Damn it, I want it perfect," Daniels shouted as he slammed down the phone. He took a puff of his cigarette to relieve the immense tension, the enormity of the stress of World Championship Wrestling building up on his shoulders. Deep down he didn't habor the same drive to convulute the changes that World Championship Wrestling was engineering. Deep down inside he just wanted WCW to be... WCW. He thought it had found his niche, and as a family man first and foremost he knew what it was like to struggle to put bread on the table. He did not want to be known as the man who brought that hardship to people he had followed as a watcher of the industry, but he wanted this job more than anything and he wanted this organisation to exceed its expectations more than anything. If executing Ted's plan to be undisputed top dog in the industry meant clearing out the opposition then as much as it pained his moral ethics he knew his business ethics were just as bountiful and he knew that ethically he was obliged to follow Ted's plan. You see, when Mark Daniels accepted the role, he merely saw it as an opportunity to get guys like Scott Levy, Eddie, Bret, Steve Borden, Paul Wight and all those he truly admired to the top. Little did he realise as the wheels turned that while he anxiously wrote their storylines he had lost touch with their friendships. He assumed Eddie was still treading a dangerous line of life, he worried about Paul's appearance, but as much as he wanted it he couldn't remember the last time he had sat down with those he wanted to help at a dinner table to share a drink and some laughs, as he had incorrectly imagined it would be like. And here he was slamming the phone down on Doug Dillenger, the head of WCW Security. Often Doug had been the butt of Mark's jokes in the beginning and they had formed a tight bond, but as time wore on Daniels treated Dillenger contemptiously, just the way Bill Watts had, just the way Eric Bischoff had, the more he looked upon it, the more he was becoming the man he came to loathe, the type of man he came to try and stop ruining the face of wrestling. The stress was telling, but it had to be perfect. The two men had to slip into the arena in Milwaukee under the cloak and dagger of security. No one should know. No one. The scripts were loosely written and were being fine tuned by the editing staff. Tick-tock, tick-tock, time ticked by. So many things were still to be put in place, he had not told the locker room who to expect, and in the next hour or so he had to whisper in a couple of ears that certain actions were going to happen, but he refused to be drawn on names. "Weeeeeeelll, if you willllll," it was the considerable southern drawl of Dusty Rhodes, 'The American Dream'. Hell, this guy was someone that Daniels wanted to know better. He came to WCW wanting to enjoy himself, he wanted to hear from Ric and Dusty about those momentous feuds. He wanted to understand the logic behind Dusty's War Games project, he wanted to understand the Midnight Rider. Hell, he wanted to give Dusty a role in executing War Games this year, but such was life things were too important to delegate at this crucial stage of the development of World Championship Wrestling. "Oh, hey... Dust," Daniels said, with his face as red as a beetroot. "I didn't see you there..." "Weeeellll brudda, I'm kinda hard to miss. Mark, you look like you been livin da Bunkhouse Blues. You look like you been through some hard times, baby. You know what you need? Brudda, I know a wrassler that you should bring in brudda. 'Dis man, he's a piece of white lightnin soul boy. You know why..?" Mark had heard it before, he wanted to roll his eyes, but he needed Dusty motivated to keep the locker room tight. "..Cuz that boy is my son. You are a reeeaaaal cagey charactaaaa Mark, I's gots to know, is it Dussssstin?" Why won't it stop his mind ached? He had heard it was Hulk Hogan, so he got rid of him. He heard it was Kevin Nash, so he kept him happy. But the more he came to realise it, the culture was infectuous. It was half the locker room. The only reason he couldn't be sure it was the other half was because he couldn't understand a word half them were saying, but he suspected they were into it just as much as he assumed only Hogan was. He stood there paralysed, the stress mounting. Finally, it happened. A long raking black limousine pulled up to a side entrance. "Doug! Hurry!" Daniels shouted out, but sure enough the one man he could rely on was onto it already, as he established a cordon of security officers to cloak the wrestlers from the copious eyes watching on. And they watched on, all of them. Scott. Kevin. Steve. Virgil. They all had their suspicions, but this had to be more tight, more secure than Fort Knox. You see, as much as times changed, Mark Daniels still clung to the hopes of .... Kayfabe.

I'm going to put the show up in a couple of days, but feel free to speculate who the two new faces may be. Go wild within the realms of 1998, I must say because it truly is such an outsider in one case in particular I feel a bit edgey but perhaps that'll bring creativity as well....

Pretty much any of the big names from the WWF would make a splash as an addition. Beyond that... Mike Awesome might be a possibility, as would Sandman. I don't recall ever seeing either as part of your WCW...? Outside of America, I would love to see Kenta Kobashi or Mitsuharu Misawa come to America and take over. Particularly Kobashi - he's a favorite of mine.

At the top of the show, we cut to the back, where numerous of Milwaukee's finest Police Officers form a very tight cordorn at the back of the arena closing off sighting the new mystery arrivals. -------------------- "Tonight, welcome to a new beginning. I am Tony Schiavone, and with me as always, Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan and 'Living Legend' Larry Zbysko, and guys, tonight, we have heard there will be two new mystery arrivals here to World Championship Wrestling. Guys, speculation has been rife these past few days, I've got to say, I honestly don't know who it is, it isn't on our sheets, it isn't on our schedules..." "This is the thing about WCW Tony," Bobby Heenan comments. "Nothing is as it seems, and tonight, if we've been promised a shock, then by the level of shocks we've seen lately in this promotion then I think we're in for an absolutely crazy moment in the history of our sport." ------------------- We cut to a video segment highlighting the life and times of WCW Television Champion Eddie Guerrero: * Eddie is a former 4 time WCW Cruiserweight Champion * Part of a famed wrestling family including nephew, current WCW Tag Team Champion Chavo Guerrero Jr, Mondo, Hector, Chavo Guerrero Sr and Gory Guerrero * Eddie is a highly celebrated star from AAA * He is a former tag team mate of the legendary El Hijo Del Santo * He wrestled as Black Tiger II in New Japan * Came to fame winning the Best of the Super Juniors tournament in 1996 * First appearance in WCW was at World War III where Eddie finished amazingly in the last nine *Won a tournament in 1996 to win the United States Championship to cement himself as perhaps the fastest rising star in professional wrestling of his era * Has a celebrated 5 star match as awarded by Wrestling Observor when teaming with Art Bar against El Hijo Del Santo and Octagon in 1994
WCW Television Championship Eddie Guerrero (c) v 'The British Bulldog' Davey Boy Smith Not the best opener in recent Nitro memory. Smith was really laboured and struggled to keep up with the pace of the match. Chono has limit to no time for Angle, and back in New Japan has been ridiculing Angle as the American who struck luck to win an Olympic Gold Medal, and that he was going to teach him the difference between amateurs and pros. This was a back and forth match full with numerous slaps, kicks, just a mixture of brutal rough housing really. Finally Angle seemed to be gaining some control hitting a couple of belly to belly suplexes on Chono, but as Angle thought he was going to get in a position for the Olympic Slam he found himself being mysted by the Great Muta. With Angle's eyes dazed, Chono merely rolled him up and grabbed a very controversial win. Result: Your winner, Masahiro Chono
Post match, with Angle stunned and unhappy, Great Muta surprised him again by slamming a steel chair over the neck of Angle. With Angle dazed on mat, Chono picked him up, and dropped him, spiked and cracked him, head first into a dangerous piledriver. Chono then threw Angle out of the ring with new regard. He followed Angle out, and lifted up the protective mat at ringside. Before Doug Dillenger's security could arrive, Chono hit Angle with another spike piledriver this time on the exposed concrete! -------------------- As we come back from a break, we see Kurt Angle being loaded up onto a stretcher by the EMTs, taking careful protection of his neck. ------------------ Backstage, 'Mean' Gene Okerlund stands by with 'The Master of the Diamond Cutter' and former United States Champion, Diamond Dallas Page. "Alright guys," Okerlund begins, "I thank you. Joining me tonight is Diamond Dallas Page of the nWo, and Diamond Dallas, at Road Wild you will take on a fimiliar enemy in 'Macho Man' Randy Savage. To add spice to this rivalry your wife has been extremely disparaging to the sweet and innocent Miss Eli.." "Sweet and innocent?" Page interjects. "You see Gene, this is where you are so clearly wrong. And this is why the formation of the New World Order was so necessary. And it didn't matter what side of the fence Randy Savage was on, even when he was part of my creation I still tried to kill him with a crutch. Do you remember, well, roll the tape...!!" A video plays remembering the moment where Page swung a crutch at the head of Savage, narrowly missing, but infamously nearly collecting someone in the crowd. "I should have destroyed him then and there, Gene. That was my mistake. You see, when I initiated the nWo nearly a decade ago, the characters and what they were designed to do were very clear cut. Slowly but surely egos got in the way of this perfect revolution, namely Randy Savage's. I take umbrage Gene when a man stops progress, like Savage did, and he stopped it by putting the nWo back months with his antics. Eventually, I had to show my true colours, eventually I had to show the world who was really behind the nWo. And I remembered my attacks on Savage, and I vowed that I should have ended him that night with the crutch, and that I would take every possible liberty to ensure that the next chance I got... ..... ..... BANG! As far as Miss Elizabeth goes, can you believe she believes in him? She trusts him? My question is, how can you be sweet and innocent and trust a maniac like him? Elizabeth, I almost feel like calling you out. You know why? Because frankly, a man as fine as Diamond Dallas Page can handle two women baby, but also, because Kim and I care for you. As much as you don't see it at the moment, our actions have been all about showing you who you should be, every bit as successful and beautiful as Kimberly. But at the moment, you are tawdry trash being victimised by the web of spells of Randy Savage. And you think I'm dangerous? I'm just doing society a favour, so Gene, it doesn't matter if you love me, you hate me, one things for sure... Bada-bing...bada-boom...Bada-Bang... You'll never...EVER forget me!" ------------------- Around the corner, we hear a loud shriek. 'Mean' Gene follows the shriek and finds a disconsolate Kimberly Page. "Kim... Kim, what's the matter?" Okerlund asks. "He... He... He tr... tr... HE TRIED TO TOUCH ME!" Miss Elizabeth and 'Macho Man' Randy Savage rush onto the scene, Savage and Elizabeth looking surprised, but what Savage has not calculated on is that it was a set up, as he came around the corner Page was ready to snap him in two with the Diamond Cutter! "BANG!" No titles on the line, but Juventud's best chance at becoming a main stream star. Ever since the adaption of Thrillapalooza we've seen a far more creative Juvi, the planchas are back, the suicide dives, the moonsaults, it is amazing to watch. And this kept even the great Lyger on his feet. Back and forth the action sizzled, in and out of the ring, Jushin held a slight sway througout the match but he never seemed to gain the momentum to finish it off as Juvi kept finding audacious counters. One of those counters became critical as Jushin had Juvi up for a Power Bomb, but Juvi held onto Jushin's mask pulling him face first violently into the mat. With Lyger in the corner and down, Juvi spead to the top and hit a 450 Splash for an amazing upset. Result: Your winner, Juventud Guerrera
We watched Juvi's arm being held up as Jushin got back to his feet, holding his head as it ached. But it would ache more, a man with a black towel over his head came through the crowd and into the ring. Referee Billy Silverman looked shock, as the man proceeded to kick both men to the gut and then...BANG! Wow, what a Suplex, like a Capture Suplex. Both men copped it. Why is this man doing this? Juvi, with a modium of control quickly grabbed Jushin by the mask and out of respect hauled him out of the ring to save him from more carnage, as the towel came off to reveal.... "Holy mother of ... Good Lord!" Tony Schiavone exclaims. "They said this was going to be big... but my god!" Zbysko remarks. "I want to know what the hell he's doing here," Schiavone comments. "Why don't you go and ask him?" Heenan asks. "No way, not in this life time," Schiavone retorts. "If its any consolation, it'd be a short life time if you went and interrupted him right now," Heenan replies. "I can't believe it's Taz!" Ric Flair always had a dirty trick to slow down the flying luchadore, until one too many dirty tricks slowed down the speed of the amazing Mexican enough to give him time to put him into the Figure Four Leglock. The degree to which Flair continually slowed the bout down gave the commentators plenty of time to get across their shock as to the presence of Taz. Result: Your winner, Ric Flair
After the break, a video promo for Scott Hall plays. Some good mat proficiencies, slow due to that, but none the less there was a lot of counters, a lot of school boy type roll ups, and genuine interest in the leverage both men looked to exert to drain the opponent. After 9 minutes of back and forth action, Malenko swept into a go behind, and picked up the larger Regal and hit an atomic drop. With Regal prancing around, Malenko was able to execute a a standing DDT. With Regal dazed, Malenko was able to get the Texas Cloverleaf on for the submission win. Nevertheless, they more than held their own in a series of audacious spots back and forth. They worked especially well with Ultimo Dragon who kept the pace high. With Kidman in a sleeper hold from Lizmark Jr, the crowd tried to get behind his feet. All of a sudden there was a commotion, the cameras scrambled around to see someone on their way to the ring. He slid under the rope and hit a delicious standing side kick to Ultimo Dragon's head. In raced La Parka, and the man hip tossed La Parka to the other side of the ring. In came Lizmark, a tilterwhirl slam for him. Finally the cameras caught a glimpse of the man's face.... It was Lance Storm! The three members of Thrillapalooza embraced in the centre of the ring, before Kidman went to the top rope... Shooting Star Press on Ultimo Dragon! Result: Your winners, Jerry Lynn, Billy Kidman and Lance Storm
After the match, Ryan Lynn handed a blue Thrillapalooza t-shirt to Lance Storm, who quickly accepted and threw it over his torso. The three men, plus the babe held their arms aloft, as the commentators talked over this new force in excitement in professional wrestling. ---------------- After the break, 'Mean' Gene Okerlund stood backstage with a smouldering Bill Goldberg, who anxiously paced back and forth, looking all kinds of hell wound up into one. "Bill Goldberg, you have called me here to the WCW Interview Centre, may I ask what is the purpose of this..?" "Purpose? This?" ..Well, no, he really didn't say that, but Goldberg never struck me as being smart. "I am going to keep this short and sweet, Gene. Frankly, Road Wild is too far away. I've been waiting, I've been biding my time, I've beat him up outside the ring, but now its time to do the talking inside the ring. So tonight, Giant... You had Harlem Heat, Steiner Brothers, Midnight Express, Hart Foundation, Demolition, Legion of Doom, the Minnesota Wrecking Crew, the Brainbusters, teams that really meant something, teams that lasted, teams that defined generations. Tag wrestling was a staple diet and a man could wrestle his whole career in the division with no qualms. This match took us back to that, clinical cutting off the ring, in perfect tag team mechanisms where each team would battle to their corner for hot tags, the run ins, the referee stopping Steiner Brothers from stopping crazed cheating on the other side, yep, its what we all used to love and adore. It takes me back to some of the really talented DOTT writers on this board who remember the old 20 minute tag matches that told a true story, had a genuine purpose. Tonight on Nitro, we went old school. And tonight, old school was cool. These two teams worked the crowd over magnificently, and after many near falls, many points of no return for either team, it was Harlem Heat who succeeded with Booker T raking the eyes of Rick Steiner, Stevie Ray cutting off the save from Scott Steiner with a violent clothesline as Booker T hit the Harlem Hangover on Rick for the pinfall. Result: Your winners, Harlem Heat
Post match, the two men held their arms high, and started trash talking into the camera to Rey and Chavo. But they needn't have worried about the cameras, for standing at the top of the ramp, clapping and nodding in acknowledgement of a wicked tag team outing, the Tag Team Champions awaited, knowing their rivals for Road Wild. ---------------- A video played highlighting the main event spectacular at Road Wild featuring the World Heavyweight Championship three-way-dance between 'Lionheart' Chris Jericho, Bret 'The Hitman' Hart and Sting. * We looked at 'Lionheart's reign * We look at Jericho winning the Championship off Sting * We look at Sting and Hart and their friendship and then Hart's splinter into a jealous mess rival * We look at the in ring excellence of each of the three men * We look at how similar Sting and Hart's views are on the corruption of the New World Order * And then we finish with the wording "WCW World Heavyweight Championship.... Goldberg snapped and shouldered Giant into the corner, where he wanted to go for a ten count of punches, but the Giant countered and thrust Goldberg into the corner and thrust his enormous shoulder into the sternum of Goldberg. I would never suggest this was anything but a rough house show down, there was little intellect to it, it was just two guys with an enormous issue. As the brawl intensified, 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair raced down to ringside, and pulled out referee Charles Robinson. Flair could be heard uttering to Robinson, "Pal, do me this favour", and Robinson immediately called for the bell declaring this a no contest. Result: No contest
Goldberg rolled out of the ring to challenge his mentor Flair, who demanded a microphone. "Stop this!" Flair calls. Goldberg ripped the microphone from Flair... "You know what Ric, I'm confused," he uttered. "On one hand, I believe in the philosophy of Taz himself... F*** the World! Screw convention. And on the other hand, I believe in you, Ric Flair.... So out of respect for you, I'm not going to Spear you, but mark my words, if you interrupt one more of my matches, YOU'RE.." Eric Bischoff's nWo music hit, as the leader of the nWo stood at the top of the ramp. "Wait a second!" Bischoff implored. "Wait a second! Ric Flair, pal, ...buddy... if you dare... DARE interrupt any of my matches ever again, I'll have you fired and I'll sue you for damages. As for you Bill Goldberg, who the [BEEP] said you could talk about Taz? As far as I'm concerned, he's not part of our roster. What he did tonight was a travesty..." The stuttering music of Taz begins, and out walks the diminutive powerhouse, with the black towel over his head. He walked over to Bischoff, and slapped him! "Not for nothing Bischoff, you don't tell me what to do brother. D!ck Flair doesn't tell me what to do, Eric Bischoff, you don't tell me what to do brother, Bill Goldberg, I don't sweat you brother! I came here looking for a challenge brother, I heard this was where the big boys play. But back where I come from not for nothing we would never stop a match like that. Never!.." "Just whose side is he on?" Tony Schiavone asked. "I don't know, does he need a side, perhaps he's his own army," Heenan retorted. "This is my promotion, Taz," Bischoff commented. "You've got to be kidding me, brother. See those ropes, brother? That's my territory, thats my yard. Not for nothing, I'm going to teach you all a thing or two about violence. And brother, where I come from, where mafias come from, we don't care about money, we care about control, brother. Where do I stand? Its all going to become very clear, but what is going to be even clearer is this. Wrestling.... in WCW.... will never, EVER, be the same again. Not for nothing! Win if you can, SURVIVE... If I let you!" We fade to black, with the news that tonight, Taz and Lance Storm arrived....

Yeah, yeah, I know, the old geyser has gone too far this time. I just thought I'd pop up a post about the decision to bring in Taz in particular. Firstly, at the moment I'm booking February 1999 so its even a bit odd for me as I'm writing 6 months behind where things are. So when I got to this and writing it up, I felt a bit edgey. You see, I am a lover of the 90s of professional wrestling, I try and find out as much as I can about it. And the more I found out between the period that I booked the contract of Taz to the point of writing this up the more I started to waiver in my thoughts that Taz should come to WCW. You see, I believe in reality and trying to keep these things in perspective. For that reason, you won't see Evan Karagias win the World Championship this year, I make subtle changes but try not to be too outrageous. With that, the more I learned about ECW and the more I learned about Taz the more it became an issue for me to bring him over. The more I heard of Taz's loyalty to the ECW movement the more I got cold feet. Infact, I got cold feet to the point where I almost changed the name Taz in all my booking sheets. In DOWCW I booked Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker into WCW, I booked Chris Kanyon to the Championship, but this.. this when I got down to it scared a little. Those moves never did. I am a stubborn old geyser and frankly the move to put the belt on Jericho still does not bug me as I know right now at this stage in 1998 I would have loved the main event I have set up, and the Championship scene in general. The reason I ended up going with it though is two fold. Firstly, I believe in following your instinct and I had an instinct to go with Taz. Secondly, the role Taz has been booked through is interesting, not perfect, but nothing ever is. But I like it, 'spose thats the main thing. One other quick point, without it being advertised as such, I have culled a lot of also-rans in the WCW roster. Possibly not noticed, but I'm not a fan of having a cast of 1000 for the sake of it. I must admit, I am looking forward to some feedback. Constructive criticism, support, whatever floats your boat. I know there's a low ratio of people who read to people who actively participate, but I think I speak for all writers when I say that hearing responses good or bad drives your willingness to go on. PS: Condolences to the Kennedy family. I have read JFK's biography and am currently reading RFK's biography, the family interests me intensely so to see it seems the last great bastion of the dynasty gone is saddening from an outsiders perspective.

I think Taz has the potential to be a very interesting character in WCW. A catalyst. And to me, that is the single best reason to bring in a new worker in a diary. Even a real world one, where the considerations are a bit different. Its great if a worker can make the readers react. If a worker can make the readers react and force the rest of the promotion react to their presense, then it really works. I think Taz can be that kind of catalyst for WCW. Especialy given his loyalty to ECW. The only time I think a bold move like this is a bad one is if its done merely for shock value, with no plans on how to use the worker. I doubt that is the situation here.

WCW shocked the world last Monday night with the arrival of Taz (or at least it seems BigPapa42, and thank God, no replies to that move would destroy me like Darth Vader tried to destroy his only son ;)), but WCW has promised to pick the pace up further to entertain our great fans in the Midwest (or continue to gain X-Pac heat?). Sturrgis, South Dakota, are you ready? Well, you should be, because WCW is just one stop away from the famed biker homeland of Sturrgis for Road Wild. But before our ground breaking three way dance for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship explodes in front of thousands of roaring Harley Davidson's, WCW has one more stop on the calendar. All you North Dakota fans, are you ready? Because WCW comes to you for an all too rare stop off in Fargo for what promises to be a scintillating event. Tune into TBS at 8:00PM on Thursday night as we look to find out the reason for the arrival of the "Human Suplex Machine" Taz, and where his allegiances lie. Eric Bischoff has made it clear that he will not sanction any involvement by Taz who remains off the official card but insiders vow that he will make a serious impact. Slated for action on Thursday includes a classic cruiserweight confrontation, fans, be sure to bring your skeleton masks and imitation steel chairs as the Chairman of WCW himself, La Parka will team with cruiserweight legend Jushin 'Thunder' Lyger, the Cruiserweight Champion, against his heir apparent Juventud Guerrera and Thrillapalooza counterpart Billy Kidman. Crazed competitor but patriotic American Hugh Morrus has vowed to take apart the Great Muta for the heinous attack that grounded the career of Olympic Gold medalist Kurt Angle. Can Morrus survive the pain of the myst, or will Great Muta feel the crunch of the No Laughing Matter? Former two time WCW World Heavyweight Champion 'Total Package' Lex Luger will also be in action as he receives a shot at Eddie Guerrero as he looks to extend his streak as the defending Television Champion. Get ready to jeer British aristocracy as 'Lord' Steven Regal looks to seek revenge for a tough defeat against Four Horseman Dean Malenko as the two wrap up preparations for their Television Championship shot at Road Wild - will Regal strike a vital blow and prevent Malenko from getting his Championship shot? WCW Tag Team Champions Rey Mysterio Jr and Chavo Guerrero Jr have made a passionate plea to the WCW Board of Directors to grant them a non title match against Harlem Heat out of their enormous respect for their career-long achievements - the request did not fall on deaf ears, you will not want to miss this one! And finally, the United States Championship goes on the line as 'Rabid Wolverine' Chris Benoit of the Four Horsemen takes on 'The Master of the Diamond Cutter' Diamond Dallas Page in what promises to be a dangerous confrontation in the ever changing war between the Horsemen and the New World Order for control of World Championship Wrestling. Will 'Macho Man' Randy Savage or Scott Hall have an interest in this match? Watch as our heated competitors look to make one last power play, gain one final advantage before Sunday's hour of judgement. Watch on as these competitors would literally risk life and limb to ensure their names are forever etched in stone, carved in legend. I like how you brought in Taz and Lance Storm.. you have a guy in Taz who can easily be the face of the company to counteract the Stone Colds of the world. Then you have Lance Storm who can train other workers and if booked right can boost some wrestlers overness as well as if you have a dev territory you can bring him in to train other workers.
Welcome fans to another edition of the Schiavone Report, I'm your host as always Tony Schiavone. I'm sure this be another exciting report, as we focus purely on the professional wrestling scene as it stands right now. There will be none of this off the record stuff that my past it former colleague Mr Ross gets himself involved in, that much I can assure you. Well, you can imagine my surprise this past Sunday night when I got home to see my wife talking to the genealogist. It appears I may be a distant relative of one of this countries greatest ever Presidents, Warren Harding. Yes, that's right, MR Warren Harding. But, I digress. Last night Monday Nitro swept through Milwaukee, and boy what a party it was. Well, I'll tell you there was cool-aid being drunk everywhere given the success of the event, and after the show we all sung, we drunk, we smoked, we danced the hootchy-coo, hell, it was so hot we even were head banging to Hanson. Stagger Lee Marshall and Larry Zbysko, you two boys are wild to party with. Speaking of Hanson, sadly the Board of Directors declined my request for them to appear at Road Wild. They said it didn't quite hit the demographics, but find me a biker who doesn't enjoy Mmm Bop. Anyway, the arrival of Taz and Lance Storm has caused considerable discussion. I for one cannot wait for what happens next. Its a not very well known fact but Lance Storm was a tag team partner of current World Heavyweight Champion 'Lionheart' Chris Jericho. I particularly enjoyed the segment at the end of the show, it appears to me that Taz will be fighting as a one man army against one and all. I would like to talk to you about Wrath. Not since I laid eyes on Kurrgan have I been more impressed by a wrestling athlete. Wrath was developed by Sgt Buddy Lee Parker and the crew down there at the Powerplant, and he really is a phenomenal wrestler. Make sure you keep watching because I expect big things soon. Also on the rise in the Powerplant is a young talent by the name of Reno. Big future. Be sure to keep watching. Other big news is the discussions ongoing with Rick Williams about reprising his award winning role as the Renegade. Stay tuned for more. I haven't been this excited since I first learned of the wonders of Tang and Jello about the World Heavyweight Championship match at Road Wild. All three men have valid claims to being the best in the business bar none, so this match promises to settle a lot of scores. Personally, I'm going with Sting for the victory. He has been there before, he knows what is needed to get the job done. And finally, a big cheerio to the Morning Show on NBC which allowed my cousin Rick to be in the audience holding up a sign for "Tony Schiavone's BBQs and Rumps". I am a big fan of Rump's and I'm hoping you will be too by the time you finish cooking all my favourite recipes. Have you ever had a hot-dog with ketchup? Yes, I know, what next will Tony Schiavone come up! Thanks once again, its $4.99 per month well invested, as this report gives you all the goss! TS
Just one question: Am I going to ever see a Chris Benoit vs. Lance Storm match? That has to be one of my dream matches. Both were in Japan (at different times), both were in ECW (at different times), both were in WCW (at different times), both were in the WWE (same time, different place in the roster), and both are technically sound wrestlers. It's a shame neither really got a match against each other. They wrestled the same people, but they never got to wrestle against each other.
