WCW 1998: A prequel to "Death of WCW"

"Well, if that's the case," the husky Southern voice exclaimed, "You know the decision I have to make, don't you?" He gulped, sweat pouring down his face. The beads of sweat showed not only the undue stress he was under, but the importance of this discussion to him, and his passion for the wrestling industry as a whole. His brain frantically clicked the cogs, trying to come up with a viable wrestling model to send back to the sharp retort he had just endured. "Oh please don't," he begged. It was as pitiful as Robin William's marvellous acting in Mrs Doubtfire, when the judge handed down his verdict in that custody case. The situation to him was as nerve wracking to him as it had been to lose one child. You see, it had become exactly like that, and subsequently it had therefore become a problem. For example, in the Cruiserweight Championship section, at the start of 1998 Eddie Guerrero was holding his third Cruiserweight Championship, Rey Mysterio Jr then won his 3rd Championship, Eddie won it back to become a four time Champion, and Psicosis won his first Championship. These numbers are actuals as at the culmination of Starrcade 1997 plus the Championship's won in the diary itself.

"Eric, nice of you to stop by," he said as he sat behind his desk. Time Warner Entertainment, a massive media conglomerate with the rather basic managerial style of the old school Ted Turner as it's Vice President. And there he sat, in a leather recliner in the towers, and across from, in a leather jacket, and black leather bike pants the unlikely hero of one of it's biggest components, Eric Bischoff of World Championship Wrestling. "Eric, what have I always told you?... The secret to business management is simple, managing isn't that hard, you just have to hit more home runs than the other guy." Bischoff nodded, not knowing the reason for the meeting was a problem for Eric. The meeting was called the night after Starrcade 1997, a very successful event indeed. But there had been a debatable end to the card, which left many viewers confused. And thus, with no forthcoming agenda for the impromptu meeting, Eric Bischoff felt every reason to be startled, and anxious. 42 years of age, Bischoff had come a long way in a relatively short space of time. His career resume read with a surprising, unerring variety of success and failure. He had sold meat from the back of a truck, run a successful construction company, heck he had even worked in a veterinarian's office. His first real break into professional wrestling came in the American Wrestling Association, the organisation run by the veteran Verne Gagne. It was at it's tail end of a reasonable run, by the time Bischoff worked for it as an interviewer, and part time consultant to the booking committee the AWA was done. Everyone from the guy selling tickets, to the young man in the fourth row of the audience knew it. Most didn't want to believe it, but it was inevitable. Fighting was in Bischoff's blood, he had toured Japan as a taekwondo fighter. He lived next door to star wrestler, but fellow rags to riches story, Diamond Dallas Page. In 1991, Bischoff got his first massive break, joining World Championship Wrestling as a commentator. The same organisation that through it's roots with Jim Crockett Promotions had hosted the legendary voices such as Bob Caudle, Tony Schiavone, Gordon Solie and Jim Ross. For most, this would seem a great result, for an ambitious 36 year old, this was the first step to what he hoped was a highly successful career. You see, Bischoff could be classed somewhat as a leach, a parasite, or in some people's eyes, a businessman's dream. Manipulative, political, but with a smart marketing sense, Bischoff knew how to run businesses effectively. He knew Jim Ross wanted some control in World Championship Wrestling, and thus he saw him as a threat, and suggested Jim Ross be allowed to negotiate with the World Wrestling Federation. In 1997, Bischoff achieved his nirvana, he was appointed President of World Championship Wrestling. "I want you to look at something Eric, tell me what you see here?" On a side table sat a television screen, and through it was beamed the ending to Starrcade 1997.
Tony Schiavone: "1....TWO....Three?" A normal count of three had been counted by Nick Patrick, to end a storyline that had last 15 months. Sting was the most over face on the face of the planet, almost singlehandedly dealing with the New World Order, finally getting his hands on Hollywood Hogan in the dream come back match. He had just jobbed clean to the manipulative Hogan. Dusty Rhodes: "Bret Hart is there, Bret Hart is at ringside." Nick Patrick headed towards Bret Hart, and demanded for the bell to be rung. Bret Hart: "It ain't going to happen again." The Hitman was fresh off the biggest screwjob finish in professional wrestling history. There had been minor screwjobs before, such as Wendi Richter to the Fabulous Moolah, but nothing like what Hart had endured in Montreal, Canada at the hands of Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1997. Hart had recently signed a 20 year contract with the struggling World Wrestling Federation, after turning down World Championship Wrestling. His reward was initially shown to fruition, a WWF Title. However, McMahon asked Hart to renegotiate with World Championship Wrestling, effectively forcing him out. Hart had in his contract a last 30 days of contract creative control, and had argued for a 'smoz' finish at Survivor Series, following which he would appear on RAW is WAR the following night and let Michaels go over him clean. McMahon agreed, but then halfway through the scripted match, asked Earl Hebner to ring the bell when Michaels sloppily applied a Sharpshooter which Hart was in the process of reversing. The match carried on, with Hart hauling Hogan back into the ring, acting as special guest referee, with Sting putting the Scorpion Deathlock on Hogan and gaining the World Heavyweight Championship.
"Well?" "Well, what?" Bischoff retorted. "I'm in charge of a multi million dollar organisation, which is now responsible for two live televised television shows damn it Ted. I have Loree at home, I've got my kids, this is taxing. I can't oversee everything, I thought Terry and Steve would work out a good ending. I thought the ending would be clean, you know that was my intention, you knew that from the get go. Irrespective of how it shaped up, we'd wait till Starrcade to rake in the buy rate and Sting would go over clean. I made that clear to Terry, I made that clear to the road agents, I made that clear to the booking committee. Damn it, even Nick Patrick was supposed to officiate clean, how the hell was I supposed to know he was believing in the heel persona so much that he'd play along with Terry." Well, if that's the case," the husky Southern voice exclaimed, "You know the decision I have to make, don't you?" He gulped, sweat pouring down his face. It was as pitiful as Robin William's marvelous acting in Mrs Doubtfire, when the judge handed down his verdict in that custody case. The situation to him was as nerve wracking to him as it had been to lose one child. You see, it had become exactly like that, and subsequently it had therefore become a problem. "Eric, meet me here in two hours, I have someone to introduce to you..." "I have a show to write Ted," Bischoff retorted. "Eric, I'm commanding you to meet me here in two hours. I still own the rights to your shows..." The story continues...

Just to give everyone a bit of an overview; * I'm running this on TEW2005, but I won't be putting out ratings as such as the mod is favourable in stats - but it's a good accurate mod for the American scene. * I still have a lot on my plate, so updates may not be as frequent as DOWCW, but I will try and expedite where I can. * I'm about halfway through 1998 in simming and taking notes on the shows, so effectively that means the stuff I want to have done basically is being done or has been done, and things are looking nice as far as I'm concerned. The good thing about that is it shouldn't be a one show thread, because I basically have it all mapped out. * For those of you who are unfamiliar with Death of WCW, please click here. It's a dynasty I did for quite some time, and I hope was enjoyed by the peeps.
Alright, tristram! -gets ready to sit back and enjoy one of the masters at work from the beginning-
Thanks mate, very kind words. We'll see if we can get this baby right ;)
I can't wait! If this is even a tenth as good as DOWCW was then we are all in for some great stuff
Thanks mate, DOWCW was kinda limited in roster, although that allowed me to bend things quite nicely because there was nothing much proven to fall back on. The good thing here is I have a load of stars in their prime, and some just begging for the right opportunity.
Bows to the godfather of WCW. Welcome back sir it will be a pleasure reading your work.
That's kinda deja vu style ironic mate, I've just finished watching Godfather 1 for the first time ever. Got an idea down the line, don't know how to use it though ;)
Oh great...now Tristram is doing a WCW diary from the same era as I am. LOL I actually can't wait to see where you take this.
Heh, mate there's so many different ways you can go with that era that a lot of different approaches (from a singular person account IE not crap) that can be interesting :D The more WCW diaries the better except for adeezy and all his chronie logins....
Well it is about time that you let the world in on this little secret. ...Prequel Continued... Bischoff sat in that office with a million thoughts running through his head. He was at least punctual, being some ten minutes early to the intended meeting. Perhaps, his manipulative mind thought, he could redeem his reputation for professionalism in the eyes of the boss if he was punctual. A lot had been going through Eric's mind, he had received a lot of heat from the 'boys' for allowing the Starrcade finish to go down the way it had, and it was starting to become apparent that several of the undercard show stoppers were starting to become anxious seeing Terry "Hollywood Hulk Hogan" Bollea position himself to get another WCW World Heavyweight Title shot. There really was no other way of it going forward, either Sting would have to hand over the WCW World Heavyweight Title to Hogan at Monday Nitro, a decision that would outrageously incense the locker room and the fanbase no end, or the title would have to be fought over in a rematch, which again disappointed all those guys who had slugged it out for the past couple of years. You see, some within World Championship Wrestling truly believed that it was merely the advent of the New World Order that had got WCW into the position it had; a position of professional wrestling supremacy. Even a lot outside the organisation believed that. But the truth was simple, a whole raft of factors had come together in combination with the ultra hot New World Order storyline to propel WCW into a position of perceived strength, a position which many felt could not be overturned to either the World Wrestling Federation of Extreme Championship Wrestling, run by the crafty strategist Paul Heyman. One of those factors was the fact that the first hour of Monday Nitro was generally filled with some of the hottest in ring talent on the face of the planet. You see, in WCW, you would get boiled on the stove top by Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio Jr, Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Dean Malenko, Raven, Billy Kidman, Ultimo Dragon before your interest was caught to introduce you to the largest athlete in the world, the Giant, the most famous professional wrestler of all time, Hollywood Hogan, the second most famous wrestler of all time, Ric Flair, the fan's own cult hero Sting, the people's champion who defied all odds Diamond Dallas Page, and the egocentric storyline around the New World Order's attempted take over of all that was World Championship Wrestling. Ring...ring... "Yeah?" The husky voiced echoed. "Well send him in." Behind where Bischoff was sitting, the oak door opened, and in came a familiar face to Ted Turner, but a face that sent Bischoff into overdrive trying to remember who this was. He knew he had seen his face somewhere before, but he couldn't place a finger on it. It was as if it was right on the tip of his tongue, but try as he might, this was one puzzle he couldn't find the cheese on. Turner stuck out his right hand, and shook the middle aged man's hand, a firm vice like grip from Turner attempting to show his strength in the position he had attained. Bischoff also offered a pensive handshake, still rendering in his mind a composite biography of who he thought the man was. The shortish man with greying hair sat down in the leather recliner, and looked at Bischoff with a look of apprehension. "Eric, I want you to meet Vince Russo," Turner sang out. Bischoff's eyes widened, his heart sank, his blood pressure sky rocketed. It was as if his life flashed before his very eyes. Here in front of his very eyes was the man charged with bringing down the Bischoff empire. Here was the man charged with destroying the somewhat delicate name that Eric Bischoff had within the professional wrestling industry. The man sat there, steering back at Bischoff, his eyes narrowing, his eyes browing dipping, it was almost a look of confusion. "Got you, no I'm just kidding," Turner laughed heartily. Bischoff's heart moved back into the appropriate cavity, and his blood pressure resumed to normal. The sweat that was beginning to formulate subsided, as his body temperature resumed to as near normality as a man in his position was ever able to assume. "Eric Bischoff, this is Mark Daniels," Turner said softly. Mark Daniels? MARK DANIELS? It was as if Bischoff was in a pyschodelic trip. He knew the name, oh, he knew that name. It was etched into his mind. He rememberd Daniels from the American Wrestling Association, Daniels was a ring hand. He helped set the ring up, and take it down. That was his job. That was all Verne Gagne allowed him to do. Daniels was desperate, he was selevating at the opportunity to get involved in the 'wrasslin business and he never denied that fact. In many respects, he had battled with Bischoff for the opportunities that ended up coming Bischoff's way, but due to the extra touch of Eric's political manipulations, Daniels never succeeded in the way Bischoff did. "I...I don'... I thought you were dead!" Sorry, I had to add in a bit of Hogan-Warrior wrestlecrap there - Heh heh "Oh quite contrare Eric," Turner continued. "It seems Mark is here, alive, breathing, and well... qualified." "Qualified? QUALIFIED? How do you become qualified for a job of this magnitude? Anyway, WHAT IS THIS JOB?" "This job Eric... Is part of your job. You see Eric, I have appointed Mark Daniels as Head of Creative, and what that means Eric, is now I have two direct reports for World Championship Wrestling. I have your good self as World Championship Wrestling President in your current capacity, but without the booking responsibilities. You see Eric, you said you didn't have the time to ensure Steve and Terry finished off Starrcade appropriately, but Mark does...." Turner continued as he waved around a bound document. "You see this Eric? This is his, business strategy. Never did you present to me a business strategy outlining the steps you wanted to take in ring for the talent. Never. You never outlined career succession plans for the talent. You never presented to me a marketing document that scientifically quantified all the various focus groups and marketing information we could gather and how we could turn that into growth streams. But you did know how to turn a business into a profit. You do know how to get over with the fans. And that's why you remain a massive part of this organisation Eric, you still are the leader of the New World Order, your persona does not change on air, your pay cheque, does not change. But I want to limit some of the political stroke of some of those guys in that locker room, so effective as of now, Mark, you have the book. You write the shows, I have given you your budget, if you need to bring fresh writers in, you do that. Oh, and Eric, if any of the talent fail to play along because they think they're your stooges when in actual fact they've been stooging you all along, they will be out of jobs. Do I make myself clear?" Bischoff merely gulped, he sighed. He looked at Daniels in complete disbelief. But he knew he had to accept it. He knew he had gone a bridge too far with Starrcade 1997. He had already been copping the heat, he had already seen the criticism on the dirt sheets, but still this infatiguable individual suffered greatly in the heart knowing part of his ability to control the turn around was gone. He had always viewed himself at the top of the tree, never having to work with anyone. Not Mark Daniels, and not Vince Russo, he was at least grateful it wasn't that man. ...the prequel continues....

His cell phone rang, as his escorted black Ford ambled towards the Thompson-Boiling Arena, Knoxville, Tennessee. It was a number he was familiar with, and as he saw the number his eyes rolled in the back of his head. "Drats..." he said under his breath as he flipped open the phone. "Well hello, Dusty..." "Eric Bisczzofff, idnt dis living on da edge of a lidning bolt, near on twenty nahhn thousssssand people from all over da great state of Tennaasseee gathered here danite partner, and daddah I hear you ain't being charge no more." "What do you want Dusty?" Bischoff said in a resigned voice. "Want daddah? I just wanted ta check that it's true Ewic, you know Tonah and Bobbah and the Proffffessssssssa were just cuious, dats all daddah." "Yeah well..." "Well good golly missss molly daddah, it sounds like dis be true. Don't worry daddah, if you're worried about dem hard time bluessszz that you might be about to suffa, dadda I can help you get through them..." "Goodbye Dusty..." Eric responded as he clicked cancel. Before his eyes could rest on the road ahead, his phone rang again. Again it was a familiar number, but this time the look was not of consternation, but rather a more apprehensive look. How could he let his long time ally down softly. He knew in his mind of minds that things might never be the same for his trusty colleague. He deliberated about whether to answer it or not, but eventually, he had no choice. "Terry, how you doing?" Bischoff asked. "Dude, is it true? I mean brother, tell me it's just not true," Terry's voice was not angry, it was one of stark shock. His voice penetrated through the core of Eric Bischoff, as if it reverberated to him that he had let his ally down. "Terry, what can I tell you..." "Dude, the truth brother. You see brother, I can't understand why anything should be different. Brother, this is where the power lies, the power of the Hulkamaniacs through saying their prayers, taking their vitamins..." "Terry, earth to Terry, hello. Look Terry, I will see you at the arena..." "What if I decide not to show, brother?" "Terry, I am still the President of World Championship Wrestling, and as much as I love you like a brother, that would not be a smart move." "Is this the end of the New World Order brother? Everything I've worked hard to establish, what really ****es me off Eric is I was the one who took the all the falls, who got these morons interested, I was the one who took wrestling out of bingo halls brother. All I'm saying dude is Hulk Hogan better not be getting screwed..." With that, the triple beep went off, Terry "Hollywood Hulk Hogan" Bollea had just hung up on his most trusted comrade. Bischoff felt in a state of dispair, he knew there was little he could do. ...To be continued.... WCW Monday Nitro The Card Rey Mysterio Jr versus Ultimo Dragon Two of the world's finest cruiserweights in action to start off Monday Nitro all guns a blazing. Neither saw action at last night's Starrcade, but both have held the WCW Cruiserweight Championship, Rey Mysterio Jr twice, Ultimo Dragon once. Two of the brightest masked athletes in the business today, will the lucha spirit or the spirit of the Orient prevail? At one stage Ultimo Dragon held nine titles around the world, can Rey Mysterio Jr stop the irrepressable Ultimo Dragon? "Those who wear the mask do not fear death. Death fears those who wear the mask." - Ultimo Dragon World Cruiserweight Championship: Eddie Guerrero versus Evan Karagias Eddie Guerrero last night defeated the incomparable man of 1000 holds, the "Ice man" Dean Malenko in a stunning opening to the Pay-Per-View extravaganza in Washington DC. Evan Karagias is a young man on the rise, with many experts touting his time is soon. Will it be this coming Monday Nitro? Chris Kanyon versus Bill Goldberg The youngster's streak continues. The young rookie, the former Atlanta Falcon defeated Steve 'Mongo' McMichael in a NFL star battle royale at Starrcade 1997. Chris Kanyon has been knocking at the doors of stardom for some time, and is regarded as the innovator of offence. But can he stop short of being the answer to the question - Who's next? World Television Championship: Booker T versus Yuji Nagata Booker T and championships go like Ali and swagger. Booker T is one of the most coveted men in World Championship Wrestling history, courtesy mostly of his fabled tag team combination with brother Stevie Ray, Harlem Heat. The man from the back streets faces a lethal submission exponent from New Japan, in a trans Pacific battle not to be missed. Lenny Lane versus the Giant Lenny Lane is a relative unknown in WCW and has featured recently in a few matches on WCW Saturday Night. This is an unparalleled opportunity to prove to the wrestling world what each wrestler hopes to be true. But his opponent stands over 7 feet tall, over 500 pounds in weight, and with the agility of a 300 pounder. This will be no mean feat for Lenny Lane. Curt Hennig versus "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan One of the most hated men in professional wrestling, Curt Hennig epitomises all that is wrong with the New World Order. After accepting Arn Anderson's spot in the Four Horsemen, Hennig prehaps defied that illustrious group to the annals of history by slamming a steel cage door over the legendary 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair's head. There is no more loved competitor in professional wrestling than Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and for U S A, U S A! U S A! he'll be sure to try and surprise Hennig with the 3 point stance. HO! "Total Package" Lex Luger versus "Lionheart" Chris Jericho Lex Luger is a veteran of the squared circle, but more importantly than that, he is a two time World Heavyweight Champion, holding the belt as recently as last year's Road Wild, losing controversially to "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan. Chris Jericho is yet to reach those lofty heights, but many are saying his time is soon. How soon? Find out on Nitro. WCW World Heavyweight Championship: Sting versus "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan There is no more reverred rematch in professional history available today, as Sting puts the much disputed WCW World Heavyweight Championship on the line against Hollywood Hulk Hogan of the New World Order. The paragon of good, versus the symbol of evil, Hogan has been a travesty, a blot on the sport of professional wrestling. Sting is the sole gladiator seemingly stalling the New World Order, but one has to wonder, what part will the New World Order play? Particularly if there was a double cross of sorts the night before with the introduction of Bret Hart, the question lies, to what extent will the nWo go to to ensure the nWo is firmly spray painted back on the belt that signifies the balance of power in WCW.

Good to have you back buddy. You know how much I loved DOWCW so I'm sure I will love this too. Having spoken to you by PM I know you'll do a great job. And hopefully this won't be a prequel to DOWCW as such as I know you will not let the company get in the situation it did in real life. Good luck buddy, all the best. You know you've always got a reader in me. And nice first card, by the way.

Rey Mysterio Jr vs Ultimo Dragon Dragon is a great athlete though, and I really hope you use him well. World Cruiserweight Championship: Eddie Guerrero vs Evan Karagias Chris Kanyon vs Bill Goldberg This one was a little hard for me to choose. Mainly because of how effectvly you used Kanyon in DOWCW. Still Goldberg gets the nod for now. World Television Championship: Booker T vs Yuji Nagata Lenny Lane vs the Giant Curt Hennig vs Jim Duggan Another great talent WCW let go to waste. We all know what he can do let's just hope you get him there. Lex Luger vs Chris Jericho Letting him go to WWF was the one of the biggest mistakes in WCW history, let's assume you won't be reliving that. WCW Monday Nitro Live from the Thompson-Boiling Arena, Knoxville Tennessee, in front of 28,862 screaming fans The cameras pan out around an almost full Thompson-Boiling Arena, as we hear for the first time in 1998 the voice of Tony Schiavone. "Welcome everybody to another exciting edition of Monday Nitro, I'm Tony Schiavone and with me is the 'Living Legend' Larry Zbysko fresh from saving Monday Nitro for World Championship Wrestling, and as always Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan. We are live here in Knoxville, Tennessee." "Hammeneggers what a great night we had at Starrcade, but you know Tony, I'm still none the wiser as to who holds the WCW World Heavyweight Championship," Heenan adds. "It was one of the greatest nights in professional wrestling history Brain, but as far as I'm concerned that belt belongs to Sting." "It certainly doesn't belong to the New World Odour guys, forget it." God, I am Good We cut backstage to outside the New World Order locker room, where Vicious and Delicious, Scott 'Flash' Norton and Buff 'the Stuff' Bagwell share a joke. Bagwell for whatever reason poses, with his top hat prevelent pointing up above his wickedly arrogant smile. Speaking of arrogance, here is chez` arrogance himself, Eric Bischoff, in a black leather jacket proudly over hanging his New World Order shirt. "Guys, guys, guys," Bischoff repeats as he smiles like a cheshire cat, "can you hear those fans? They're here to see me, and the New World Order." "It's for life baby," Norton adds as he pounds his right fist into his left palm. "You know, last night guys Sting got some assistance from Bret 'The Hitman' Hart to steal our title away from Hollywood Hulk Hogan. Not tonight, you see tonight, I've just got word from the WCW Executive Committee that Sting will have to defend the belt tonight..." "OH MY!" Schiavone blurts out. "Oh that is too sweet," Bagwell ponces out. "But you know something, I've got something in store for you too, and I think you're going to like it." "WHAT ON EARTH COULD HE BE TALKING ABOUT? This is a travesty." "The New World Odour is always weasling something in." "Did someone say my name?" Heenan responds. Ultimo Dragon v Rey Mysterio Jr What an outstanding way to start off 1998, and could 1998 be the year that the lucha libres take control of professional wrestling. You can tell even by the roars of the crowd as they head to the ring that the lucha libres are earning their respect here in WCW. It was a match fulled with intense high spills, audacious chaos. The match continued inside and out of the ring, including an amazing no look asai moonsault delivered by Ultimo Dragon to Rey Mysterio Jr who was perched on the outside. Rey's head crashed hard into the cement floor. Ultimo Dragon rolled Rey back in, and straight away went for the Dragon Sleeper, but Rey pumped his legs to the ropes and then used the middle rope to throw his weight back and periscope over the stunned Dragon. Rey then sent Dragon into the ropes... hurricanrana. And delivered with perfection. Dragon was in a world of pain and felt it like no other. Rey grabbed him by the head and took him to the top rope. Dragon fought back with rights and lefts, and pushed Rey to the mat. Ultimo Dragon.... moonsault! No one home! Rey went back towards the side of the ring and waited for the Dragon to get back up... Springboard Hurricanrana! Here is the cover...1....2....3! Your winner: Via pinfall, Rey Mysterio Jr Tony Schiavone: "What a great match to start off Monday Nitro." Bobby Heenan: "I wonder how Rey Mysterio Jr kept getting up from the beating he just took Tony. It was like watching a couple of lawn darts on coffee beans." ----- After the break ----- What about me? Tony Schiavone: "Welcome back fans, what a great night we have in store for you, including the rematch between Sting and Hollywood Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight ... wait a second, wha...what's going on here?" Larry Zbysko: "It looks to me as if our resident scrap merchant in the bleaches has something to say." With a chequered shirt tied around his waist, blue ripped denim shorts, and a general look of disdain, the leader of the Flock, the ultra loner Raven grabbed a microphone off David Penzer. He sat on the bottom rung of the ring turnbuckle, facing no one in particular. "I remember growing up as a child," he pondered. "And wondering why the other kids wouldn't let me play. I used to think about it, a lot, and then I thought about what I would do to them to make them walk the line I saw in front of me. To sow the seeds of doubt that I saw. By the time the fight came along, I learned to love the pain. I learned to want to be hurt. I learned to cope with the ever present opportunity of going insane, I had to be... crazy. My dominuitive group of loyal followers see the ways of Raven now, but they are all at once still loners looking for guidance, looking for a soul, and they have grouped together a group of dead, black souls looking for redemption. The question that writhes through their minds is repeated through me, and thus they follow my every step, my every vision, my every direction. That question, what about me? And what about me? What about Raven? Tonight we have Sting versus the cancer of professional wrestling, the very sycophant who wants to keep my type down. My time will come, and if it doesn't, I'm only a front row away from making it happen. So it is written, so it shall come to pass, quoth the Raven, nevermore!" Tony Schiavone: "Guys, I'm sorry, I just don't get it." Bobby Heenan: "It's not real hard Tony, the guys a whack job." Starrcade - What went down
To the sounds of Smashing Pumpkin's ever present dark anthem, Tonight Tonight, we recap some of the incredulous scenes from last nights debacle. Mike Tenay: "There he is! This is Sting." Tony Schiavone: "Fans, we've been waiting for this moment for years..." Once in the ring, Sting laid into Hollywood, causing him much angst. Dusty Rhodes: "Go get 'em Sssting! Daddah go get 'em." But then the tide turned, and Hogan hit the leg drop of doom. Mike Tenay: "This can't be it, can ... can it?" Tony Schiavone: "Nick Patrick with the count...1....TWO.... 3?" Outside the ring the calamity ensued with Bret 'Hitman' Hart ripping the ring bell from David Penzer. "Give me that damn bell. I'm not letting this happen again!" "RING THAT BELL! I counted three..." "I'm not letting another one be screwed..." Dusty Rhodes: "Daddah just blasssted Nick Patrick!" Tony Schiavone: "Bret Hart is pulling Hogan by the little hair he has left, and he... he's going to referee this one...." The match carried on, until Sting started to dominate, and eventually started to put the Scorpion Death Lock on. Mike Tenay: "He's turning him over!" Dusty Rhodes: "Yes daddah!" Tony Schiavone: "He's got him over..... Bret Hart's checking, he's checking... he's...he's... HE'S GIVEN UP! We have a new World Heavyweight Champion..." Sting grabs the belt from Bret 'Hitman' Hart as the WCW locker room empties to support Sting in the centre of the ring
Tony Schiavone: "What a great night that was guys, but up next, guess who's here to give their views on things." Larry Zbysko: "Let me guess, someone from the New World Odour?" Tony Schiavone: "Mr nWo guys, Hollywood Hogan..." WCW Cruiserweight Championship Eddie Guerrero (c) v Evan Karagias Last night, Eddie Guerrero retained his belt in a titanic struggle of artsmanship, in one of the best PPV openers in recent history, but tonight he had a green rookie by the name of Evan Karagias. Karagias displayed a lot of agility, but not the guile we've come to expect from Eddie Guerrero who finished off a fast paced match with the Frog Splash. Your winner: And still WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Eddie Guerrero ----- The icon speaks To the sounds of the incomparable Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child, comes a man not fit to carry the crashing sounds of the experimentalist, the visionary, the charismatic Hendrix. Being escorted by Eric Bischoff, in his black nWo attire complete with the spraypainted black beard is none other than Hollywood Hulk Hogan. Tony Schiavone: "Fans, I don't know why we have to put up with this." Larry Zbysko: "At least he doesn't have our belt around his waist!" Inside the ring, Bischoff sends a signal of praise to the fans, believing they're in support of the New World Order. "You guys are too much, thank you, thank you so much! This definitely feels like nWo country." The crowd boo relentlessly, causing Hollywood Hogan to get frustrated, he starts wagging his finger at various members of the ring crowd opposite to the flock. In the ring with Eric Bischoff and Hollywood Hulk Hogan is 'Mean' Gene Okerlund, the legendary professional interviewer. "Alright fans, Hollywood Hogan, last night at Starrcade you relinquished your WCW World Heav..." "I RELINQUISHED NOTHING, brother! Ya know something Mean Gene, the more things change the more they stage the same. 18 months ago, I created anarchy in the world of professional wrestling by joining the New World Order. Before that I did all the right things, I said my prayers, I took my vitamins and still the cr@p represented in this very crowd started to boo the name of Hulk Hogan, brother. Dude, you see Hulk Hogan put this sport on the map and gave rejects like Sting an opportunity, brother. And what thanks did I get? I asked for a fair match brother, and yet last night that outsider Bret Hart decided to put his nose in business that didn't relate to him, brother. Now as I got in my learjet I thought what would I do brother? I could have left professional wrestling brother, for the way I've been treated. But you know something Mean Gene, I looked around and there were my friends. My blood. The blood of the new spirit of professional wrestling, brother. The blood that kept these morons coming back night in night out, keeping the likes of that paper chump Sting in a job, dude. You see, the more things change the more they stay the same, and as I've said a thousand times, when ya nWo, you're nWo..." "FOR LIFE!" "That's right, brothers. And when you're nWo, you're just too..." "SWEET!" "Tonight Hollywood Hulk Hogan, you have a shot at redemption, you have a chance to take back the WCW World Hea..." "Chance brother? Ya know something Mean Gene, let me tell you something brother. There's more than a chance, brother. You see, when I wrap my 24 inch pythons around Stinger tonight brother, he'll be the one saying his prayers as he looks up at those lights, to see my leg drape across his throat...1....2.....3! Stinger, brother, you got lucky at Starrcade, you know it, I know it, the whole world knows it, and I can tell you one thing Stinger, I won't let the same thing happen twice brother. So I just have one question for you... WATCHA GONNA DO... WATCHA GONNA DO WHEN HOLLYWOOD HOGAN RUNS WILD ON YOU?" "Knoxville, you're beautiful, we love you!" Tony Schiavone: "Yak, that almost me sick guys." Bobby Heenan: "Business is picking up Tony!" Dropping from the rafters, complete with baseball bat is none other than the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, STING! Hollywood looks mortified, and looks to exit the ring, but stumbles. Sting pointed the baseball bat at Hogan, before dropping it and picking up the microphone. "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" Sting screamed out as he pounded his chest. "Hollywood Hogan, we're all sick and tired of hearing your evil mind tick over. So I've just got one thing to say to you, and all the little Stingers out there, if you think I got lucky, why did you freak out when I came down? The truth is, there was no luck Hogan, and I will show it to you again tonight.... Oh, one other thing, tonight I show who the real World Heavyweight Champion is, and incase you're wondering who that is... WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Hollywood Hogan... haha... tonight, you're a DEAD MAN!" Tony Schiavone: "WHOA! This shapes as one of the truly great nights in professional wrestling history." Bobby Heenan: "Look at Hogan, he's beside himself!" Larry Zbysko: "Finally the New World Odour have someone to answer to guys!" Chris Kanyon v Bill Goldberg ...GOLDBERG... ....GOLDBERG.... ....GOLDBERG.... ....GOLDBERG... Tony Schiavone: "Guys have we ever seen a more powerful introduction to professional wrestling than the introduction given by Bill Goldberg?" Larry Zbysko: "Last night he dealt to Steve McMichael, whose next?" Bobby Heenan: "There's your answer..." Chris Kanyon beat a lonely track to the ring. Kanyon tied up in a collar and elbow tie up with Goldberg, trying to force him into the corner, but Goldberg quickly changed body positions and ended up powering Kanyon into the corner. Kanyon did unleash some moves, mainly a clothesline, but Goldberg soon enough had him ready for the spear and jackhammer. Goodnight nurse. Your Winner: Via pinfall, Bill Goldberg The man...
We cut to a vignette of Bill Goldberg, showing the enormous weights he bench presses. We have in the vignette Sgt Buddy Lee Parker. "Work Bill! Work!" They cut away to an almost shoot out of character Buddy Lee. "You know, I don't think I've ever seen such a strong work ethic in all my time. There's nothing he won't do to get to the top. Nothing."
I dance better, too Backstage, the ever arrogant "Model" Rick Martel passed another conceited piece of work, the young up and coming Disco Inferno. "You know what Disco, I can dance better than you too," Martel said as he rolled his eyes. "Pff... You smell too..." Martel sprayed him with his scented Arrogance... Brotherly Love Backstage, the WCW World Television Champion was skipping on a spot in his dressing room, looking incredibly intense ahead of his TV Title defence. In walked his fabled brother, the other half of Harlem Heat, Stevie Ray. "Sucka, I just want you to know somethin fruit booty... I am proud of you, bro. You are doing Harlem, proud!" Booker T retained his glare look, keeping focussed on the job at hand. This will be too sweet... Backstage, Hollywood Hogan was beside himself given what had just transpired with Sting. "Brother, I am the icon, I deserve better than this!" From behind came his great friends, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, the original trio of the New World Order. The Outsiders attempted to comfort Hogan. "Hey... Hey yo, don't sweat that punk Hogan. That punk better learn not to sing it, but bring it!" "Hey, Hulk. You know, you could just say... oh I don't know, your chest hurts and not fight him..." "NOT FIGHT HIM BROTHER?" "I'm just saying..." "Brother, I'm the icon of professional wrestling, dude. These 24 inch pythons are going to wrap around his neck and drive the very blood of him, dude." Hogan storms off, in a fit of rage. "Your chest hurts, Kev?" "Yeah, just here..." Nash says as he winks, clearly blowing off that he faked his non appearance against the Giant last night. "Do you want me to rub it?" "No? What's wrong with you dude. I'm big sexy for gods sakes, I've got plenty who want to rub it.." "Oh yeah, the nWo is toooooooo sweet!" WCW Television Championship Booker T (c) v Yuji Nagata The second of tonight's title matches, one of the most lethal submission artists from the Orient against one of the most coveted wrestlers in WCW history. Nagata quickly went for the Nagata lock, but Booker T kicked him off. Nagata looked stunned as Booker sprung quickly to his feet, and clotheslined Nagata. Quick as a rabbit...HARLEM HANGOVER! Goodnight nurse. Your Winner: Via pinfall, and still WCW Television Champion, Booker T The immovable object
A vignette was played highlighting the physical strength of the Giant. It then highlighted some of the Giant's in ring highlights, from his Power Plant days of hitting a Moonsault to a drop kick, to the ever vicious Choke Slam!
Lenny Lane v The Giant This was like feeding a legless antelope into a frenzied river full of hungry Crocodiles. It was over quick, thankfully for Lenny, courtesy of the Chokeslam. Your Winner: Via pinfall, the Giant Tony Schiavone: "He barely raised a sweat." Bobby Heenan: "It was almost merciful though Tony, that hammenegger stood no chance. You know, there's a not lot upstairs perhaps for the Giant, and he employs such scientific moves as a right to the head, but he's extremely effective." Tony Schiavone: "Wait a second! WHAT's THIS!" As the Giant goes back to the Gorilla position... "Take that Giant..." Buff Bagwell and Scott Norton have ambushed him, the big man is down, here's a trash can to the head from Norton. Tony Schiavone: "Was this Eric Bischoff's plan? To take another WCW star down?" Bobby Heenan: "He reminds me of another crafy manager..." The Cruiserweight Champion gloats Backstage, 'Mean' Gene Okerlund has a very special guest with him, the WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Eddie Guerrero. "Guys, I'm back here with Eddie Guerrero, Eddie another successful night here on Nitro." "Hey...Holmes. Amigo, last night at Starrcade papi, I proved for once and for all who the greatest luchadore is of all time, esse. I proved the ultimate theory, no one beats Eddie Guerrero in the end. I'm too smart for that, esse. But you know Geno, I'm getting tired of all the same rubbish here in World Championship Wrestling holmes, I mean holmes, who can honestly challenge me for this title, esse?" Just then, Chavo Guerrero Jr comes onto the scene and stands toe to toe with Eddie Guerrero. Eddie goes to hug Chavo, but Chavo refused to hug back. "Papi? Amigo? Holmes what's the problem, esse?" "You're the problem Eddie, holmes. In our family, the Guerrero name is proud. You think you overcame everything here in WCW, but I'm all grown up now Eddie, and it's time for me to teach my uncle a lesson." Chavo storms off... "Esse?" "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan v Curt Hennig Curt Hennig comes to the ring complete and resplendit in 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair's sequined robe, stolen from Fall Brawl 1997. Hacksaw comes down, waving around the flag patriotically... U...S...A U...S...A U...S...A HO! TOUGH GUY! But Curt Hennig was in no mood for patriot games, and quickly finished off the wiley veteran with the lethal Hennig Plex! Your Winner: Via pinfall, Curt Hennig After the match, "Ravishing" Rick Rude performs the Rude Awakening on David Penzer, taking the microphone as a result. "Cut the damn music! I think all you starving hippos out there need to hear from physical specimens of godliness, Curt, if you would." "Thank you Rick, you see Hacksaw Jim Duggan, these fans chanted pathetically... U....S.....A..." U S A! U S A! U S A! "But what these morons should have chanted was n...W....o. You see Jim, it's time to trim the fat in this god forsaken company, and you're just the first of man..." Chris Benoit's music hits, and out comes the Canadian Crippler, the Rabid Wolverine, complete with the 'Enforcer' Arn Anderson. Benoit looks as rugged as usual, as Anderson from the top of the ramp speaks out to Hennig. "Curt Hennig! How appropriate tonight you wear the robe of a real legend. You see Curt Hennig, you made the fatal error of thinking all was forgotten in love and war. But wearing that tonight merely reignited the flames that burn so dearly in he heart of the Crippler. Not even I can control him Curt, and I all can say on his behalf is I don't know when it will be, I don't know how it will be, but what I do know is this man right here will end your career on behalf of honour, on behalf of tradition. You see Curt, he's not a nice man, and we don't ride horses in white robes, I've forewarned ya and even gave you my position, but you didn't listen. You just didn't listen. But I can guarantee you one thing Curt, by the time Chris Benoit's finished with you, you will wish you had have!" Tony Schiavone: "Whoa, looks like Curt Hennig has walked into something here guys." Larry Zbysko: "If there was one man I'd hate to face in a pure wrestling contest, it's Chris Benoit. When you add in aggression into that, it doesn't take much to realise you're in for a world of hurt." "Total Package" Lex Luger v "Lionheart" Chris Jericho Could this be an exhibition of past versus future? The former two time WCW World Heavyweight Champion against a young Canadian on the rise. This was a great opportunity for Jericho, and he appeared to star in this high stage. Luger was his usual powerful self, but when he flexed up to showcase his power, it only fired up Jericho more to run him ragged. Luger though started to gain some ascendency, and signalled to all and sundry for the Torture Rack, but before he could slip it on Jericho, Masahiro Chono hit him from behind with a lead pipe. Jericho smiled as referee Mickey Jay tried to make sense of what just happened, and applied the Liontamer for the victory. Your Winner: Via submission, Chris Jericho Post match, when Luger came to his senses, he proceeded to chase Chono up the aisle. But again, the nWo, this time nWo Japan had the Gorilla position all tied up, the Great Muta spat green mist in Luger's eyes, and Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Chono worked him over, pummelling him into the ground. The pain for the big man Backstage, "The Master of the Diamond Cutter" Diamond Dallas Page entered the dressing room of his fallen comrad, The Giant. The Giant was grimmacing. "Giant, Yo. You know, that reminded me of the Diamond Cutter, you just never see it coming." The Giant glared up at Page, trying to understand what his point was. "My point is simple Giant, we here in WCW have sat back and taken this for too long from the New World Order. I want you to know bro, I have your back. And if they cross you, they cross me, and if they cross me, they will....FEEL....THE....BANG!" Are you crazy, esse? Backstage, Eddie Guerrero called into the dressing room of Chavo Guerrero Jr, with the Cruiserweight Championship draped over his shoulder. "Esse, what the hell was that about holmes? Are you crazy? We're familia, we're blood. We shouldn't be fighting like this, esse." "Familia? Yeah, we're blood Eddie, but perhaps the patch means more to me than you. You see, you'll always be my uncle and I respect you for that, but you carry the Guerrero name in a very bad light, esse. And I won't stop changing the way you see the world until I take away the one thing you hold more sacred than your family esse, the Cruiserweight Championship. Where were you on Friday, esse?" "Friday holmes?" "Yeah Friday, holmes. Do you know what happened to mom?" "Mom?" "Yeah, I forgot esse, you're the hot shot Cruiserweight Champion... why would you know. You're pathetic, esse, now if you don't mind, I want you out of my dressing room." "Esse?" "Leave." WCW World Heavyweight Championship Sting (c) v "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan Last night, at Starrcade, the stars alligned and Sting became the WCW World Heavyweight Champion. In a touching moment, the entire WCW locker room came to the centre of the ring to celebrate with their gallant hero, and here half the locker room again seemed to have congregated into the crowd to watch Sting put the disputed championship back on the line against the paragon of evil, Hollywood Hogan. This is Sting's fourth World Heavyweight Championship (including one won under the banner of the NWA), and it would take a brave soul, or a manipulative cold hearted S.O.B to be able to prize this sport's greatest prize away from him. You see, this belt signifies so much, including the changing guard of professional wrestling aristocracy, and the final dash of gold in the overall weight of power in the most spirited battle in professional wrestling, WCW v the nWo. And Hogan knew it, and like a cobra, he was prepared to do anything to get his prey. Including low blows, including eye rakes, Hogan was in his element. The true gunslinger of professional wrestling was following the motto, win at all costs, including integrity and dignity. You see, the likes of Hogan had tormented the established history of this coveted championship, looking to inscribe their name on it at all costs, including the honour and tradition the belt had developed over the years. For most of the match, it appeared like the Hulkster was going to regain the belt. When Sting seemed to be getting on a role, a low blow, a piece of deception from Eric Bischoff would muster enough luck to draw Sting off the momentum pendlum, leaving Hogan to dictate a slow, tedious pace to the match. With Sting's facepaint vanishing, Hogan sent Sting into the ropes... BIG BOOT! He waved his hand to the ear, from one side of the ring, to the other. He criss crossed the ring... LEG DROP OF DOOM!....1......NO! Sting pushed him off showing impervious powers to the Leg Drop! The very move that had defeated many men, from legends like Ric Flair to the biggest men alive like Andre the Giant, not many if any had kicked out of this, especially at 1. The crowd was rabid... STING STING STING STING Tony Schiavone: "What the hell! "Macho Man" Randy Savage is here... and he's got the ring bell!" Larry Zbysko: "Not again!" Tony Schiavone: "Wait a second!" Bret Hart also raced in, and as Savage stood perilously on the top turnbuckle with the bell in his hands, Hart delivered a low blow. Savage's eyes nearly popped out of his head, as he stumbled to the floor. Sting sent Hogan into the corner.... STINGER SPLASH! He whipped him to the other corner... STINGER SPLASH! Hogan stumbled...SCORPION DEATH DROP! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! And now... the coup de grace.... SCORPION DEATH LOCK!!!! IT'S IN! Hogan's shaking his head. He's not giving up... NOW HE IS! Your Winner: Via submission, and STILL WCW World Heavyweight Champion, STING! Brothers in arms indeed Post match, Bret 'The Hitman' Hart took the WCW World Heavyweight Championship from David Penzer, and scaled the steps into the ring. He strode between the ropes, and took a good look down at the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. He walked over toe to toe with Sting, and the two men eyeballed, before Hart took another look down, he then took Sting's right hand and held it aloft, before strapping the belt around his waist! The two men embraced in the centre of the ring as Hogan finally came to, as Nitro went off the air. ========================= I hope you enjoyed it, I felt as if I was suffering a huge bout of 'ring rust' there, but hopefully the show at least was somewhat (somehow?) coherent. As they say in the horse racing, hopefully he'll be better for the run :D
