Ring of Fire: The Wheel Turns

From www.ringoffire.com... This Tuesday Fighting Fit will broadcast live from Bolton's Rugby Fields. Tickets are still available and we promise you a great night out. Definitely in action: vs. Dos Phoenix vs. Tiger Force Ring of Fire's newest tag team is inveiled, and looks to make an immediate impact. Can Byron and newcomer SUKI overcome the veteran experience of Dos Phoenix, or will the Mexican legends show just how they reached that status? vs. Leo Price vs. Nate Johnson The indefatigable Johnson has been far from gold since his 2011 TV Championship reign, but that gold still makes him more highly decorated in Ring of Fire than Leo Price, a former Wigan Bulldog. Both these men are best known from tag team runs, but they're now trying to make it as singles competitors. Once the smoke clears, one of these men is nearer his goal... vs. KC Glenn vs. Nigel Svensson for the ROF TV Championship Having overcome one two-time TV Champion Glenn faces another challenge, arguably the strongest figure in the TV Championship scene in 2012, Nigel Svensson. This youngster trained not far from the arena in Bolton and will definitely be looking to prove his style superior to the American Glenn's tactics. vs. The Professionals vs. The Stunners It's champions vs. champions with no titles on the line; all that's left is the question of which team truly are champions - though with astonishing records on both sides, this match alone can hardly settle that. Pride on the line for four major players on Tuesday... vs. Joey Beauchamp vs. Jonathan Faust Word has reached us backstage that Davis Wayne Newton has been training Faust, and there are few who can be said to know Joey better. The former 21CW World Champion may now finally prove himself against four-time ROF champion Beauchamp. Quick Predictions Guide: Dos Phoenix vs. Tiger Force Leo Price vs. Nate Johnson KC Glenn vs. Nigel Svensson for the ROF TV Championship The Professionals vs. The Stunners Joey Beauchamp vs. Jonathan Faust Axxis Jr vs. Davis Wayne Newton vs. Don Henderson in a Submission Only Bout

ROF: Fighting Fit Tuesday Week 3 February 2013 Bolton Rugby Fields (Northern UK) 7264 in attendance RATING: 0.60 vs. Dos Phoenix vs. Tiger Force After a couple of solo outings on the losing side, Byron and SUKI have formed an alliance. Today they got to test that for the first time against two legends of lucha libre. With a little under ten minutes bell to bell, Phoenix III stood out most – which fitted his role as the man making the pinfall over SUKI – but the others took the opportunity to showcase slicker skills in various areas. Weakish battle overall, but strong enough for a new team's first outing. They'll grow better. Dos Phoenix defeated Tiger Force when Phoenix III pinned SUKI RATING: C+ Following that match we ran a hype video for the Don/Art confrontation coming next week; we drew on both men's prior matches against each other as well as their career arcs to date, in particular the similarities in their backgrounds and title histories. Did pretty well, all told; we ran it perhaps a little long. RATING: B- vs. Leo Price vs. Nate Johnson Well... the spectre of bad chemistry strikes here. Leo doesn't seem to be having a great deal of luck getting forward momentum together here, and this was weaker than the previous tag match. They did their best, but I'd hoped for more from this quarter hour; Price goes forward with the Price Drop after a missed opportunity of a bout. Leo Price defeated Nate Johnson by pinfall RATING: C vs. KC Glenn vs. Nigel Svensson for the ROF TV Championship Now this contest was one where chemistry was on my side; seventeen minutes bell to bell saw these two show just how good our younger wrestlers can be. With very little more time to learn, both of these men will be able to show their face in the occasional main event title bout, even if they're not ready to hold the strap yet. The Sunshine Band once again comes through for KC who continues to look solid in his title reign. KC Glenn defeated Nigel Svensson by pinfall RATING: B vs. The Professionals vs. The Stunners This in answer to the challenge suggested on Sunday. They had a little under a quarter of an hour to strut their stuff in this champion vs. champion bout, which was won by the ROF belt holders for the simple and sole reason that their title is primarily seen by this audience, and this loss wouldn't hurt American perception of the Stunners. Ernest got the fall off the Dead on Arrival slingshot piledriver despite Black Eagle's extra efforts in the air; nonetheless, both teams look great from this highly enjoyable match. No titles change hands, but there's satisfaction for the Professionals here. The Professionals defeated The Stunners by pinfall RATING: B+ Backstage we saw a quick training video, with Davis Wayne Newton giving mat lessons to Joss Thompson and Jonathan Faust – Joey's opponent tonight. The audience seemed amused, but at the same time... a little trepidatious over Faust's apparent insertion into this feud. RATING: C vs. Joey Beauchamp vs. Jonathan Faust Again, only a quarter of an hour here, and that limited the amount they could both do – though not by any means enough to cause them too many issues; they just couldn't quite reach the level of the tag bout earlier. Despite Davis' training and advice, Joey got the upper hand here and beat Faust with the Breeze Block confidently enough. Joey Beauchamp defeated Jonathan Faust by pinfall RATING: B vs. vs. Axxis Jr vs. Davis Wayne Newton vs. Don Henderson in a Submission Only Bout Lovely stuff. As Don's technical skills continue, somehow, to get even sharper than they had been, Axxis' selling and flow are also looking better as we go. Davis, of course, is Davis, and the three tore into each other with a remarkable ferocity. In the end Don was able to dodge the Gravity Axxisault and fell Davis to apply the Scottish Deathlock, forcing the Canadian to tap out – which brought a firm smile to Don's lips as Davis' recent bids for the title began to look weaker. Don Henderson defeated Axxis Jr and Davis Wayne Newton when he made Davis Wayne Newton submit RATING: A While the main event was as excellent as ever, if I'd been able to see the future this card could have been structured better. Still, we got a good enough show in that I'm not overly upset about it... OVERALL: B

From www.ringoffire.com... We're less than a week from the fourth School of Tradition PPV. Before we get there, Ostrava Arena will play host to another edition of European Showcase and those last few matches for School of Tradition will doubtless fall into place. So what's coming up? vs. w/ Extraordinary Men vs. Pure Perfection Four major players in the tag team division will clash in our opening contest. Extraordinary Men have the chance to earn a title shot next week here, while Pure Perfection know that a win at this level will drag them significantly up the rankings and place them in contention through March. vs. Buddy Garner & Roy Edison vs. Los Leyendas Garner & Edison have made some sterling progress in the rankings these past weeks. With a tag division dominated by the lucha libre style and a win already under their belts against Dos Phoenix, they'll be looking to prove their ability against a second team of Mexican greats. Los Leyendas, on the other hand, will certainly not want to be positioned further away from a title shot... w/ vs. British Samurai vs. Dean Daniels for the ROF European TV Championship It's champion against champion here as both men hold regional titles within Ring of Fire. Daniels overcame Mario Heroic, a long-term major player within Ring of Fire, to claim his belt - can he topple another ROF stalwart here and add to his impressive collection of gold? vs. Huntress Makiko vs. Cherry Bomb for the ROF Womens Championship Two dangerous veterans return to Ring of Fire's TV with this rare title match. Makiko, the current champion, has held tag and singles gold with famed joshi promotion 5SSW as well as her current - and dominant - reign in Ring of Fire. Cherry Bomb has never held the ROF Womens Championship, but has accrued three reigns at the top of AAA and CWWF as well as tag and AAA Top Contendership gold on multiple occasions. Neither grappler can be easily dismissed; Cherry in particular will be hoping to add to her title collection soon as she's stated her desire to retire within the year. vs. The Shooters vs. Davis Wayne Newton & Nigel Svensson Following his defeat on Tuesday Davis asked for a follow-up match without the interference of Axxis Jr. The champion reluctantly acquiesced, but with the stipulation that it be a tag match, wanting to reduce the risk of injury before the PPV. At his side, his ally of seven years standing Billy Robinson. Davis finds himself without a clear ally; with his match against Joey Beauchamp coming up next Tuesday and Joss Thompson uncharacteristically requesting the Championship Committee ensure he not be booked in a match that would force him to favour one side or the other, Davis has had to look elsewhere - but he seems confident that Nigel Svensson has the talent to neutralise the Shooters' experience advantage. vs. vs. Art Reed vs. Human Arsenal vs. Joey Beauchamp in a Submission Only Bout This match was booked by the Championship Committee "in the interests of fairness to the USPW World Championship's status and to Davis Wayne Newton's opponent for School of Tradition". The mirror image of Tuesday's contest, we see three worthy grapplers in a position to gain momentum and confidence heading into their Pay-Per-View matches. Perhaps the man facing the biggest mountain in this contest is Joey Beauchamp, as he faces two men much better recognised as submission experts than he - but Beauchamp has overcome stars in submission matches before, and cannot be discounted. Quick Prediction Guide: Extraordinary Men vs. Pure Perfection Buddy Garner & Roy Edison vs. Los Leyendas British Samurai vs. Dean Daniels for the ROF European TV Championship Huntress Makiko vs. Cherry Bomb for the ROF Womens Championship The Shooters vs. Davis Wayne Newton & Nigel Svensson Art Reed vs. Human Arsenal vs. Joey Beauchamp in a Submission Only Bout

ROF: European Showcase Sunday Week 3 February 2013 Ostrava Arena 2000 in attendance RATING: 0.59 vs. w/ Extraordinary Men vs. Pure Perfection With Steve feeling his age as he has been, this match was always likely to have one outcome. Still and all, Steve's a great wrestler, and Sergei's very strong. Add in two excellent luchadors and the result is hard-hitting, highly entertaining, and packed with moments where it looked like Steve and Sergei might win it. The Mexican Standoff stereo superkick carries the day as always, however, and Sergei stares at the ceiling while Extraordinario registers another pinfall Extraordinary Men defeated Pure Perfection when Extraordinario Jr pinned Sergei Kalashnov RATING: B vs. Buddy Garner & Roy Edison vs. Los Leyendas Sadly, the next tag contest couldn't live up to that standard. Garner and Phoenix are both polishing their game nicely and El Leon's going to feel good about scoring the fall over Buddy, but this was nothing special. We only gave them ten minutes, which surely limited it. Even so, Los Leyendas are still scrabbling to find their feet again in the tag division. Los Leyendas defeated Buddy Garner & Roy Edison when El Leon pinned Buddy Garner RATING: C Art Reed came out next and cut a pretty good promo about this latest title shot and what it means to him. Sammy's still pulling out new tricks and honing his moves, and that helped, and Dean's own belt made this look a little more credible, and that helped. And of course Phoebe performed well at ringside, making all Dean's offence look even more devastating. The Fisherman's Suplex finished and gave Samurai a little more forward momentum; his days as champ are numbered, but the new winner won't be this one. Good work playing on his UCR days and building up to his upcoming match with Davis Wayne Newton; the only problem being that UCR knew him as a heel and Davis is the closer to a heel in this contest. A series of tests in house shows have shown us that Sherie works extremely well with the Huntress, and so we get a title shot here for my better half. Well, better in the ring, at least. They had ten minutes and performed better with it than the ten minute tag earlier in the night; we can expect Europe to have taken more of a shine to them now than they previously had. Makiko retains with the Makiko Clutch submission to a pretty decent pop. Some excellent work here showcasing the champ, one of his key rivals, and two major players from the TV title chases, and really putting over all four men. I enjoyed this a lot. And the similarities didn't end there; the match ran roughly the same length of time and the man involved in next Tuesday's title match scored the win, as Art Reed made Human Arsenal submit after Arsenal suplexed Joey out of the ring. Good stuff, though mildly weaker than Tuesday's contest. Art Reed defeated Human Arsenal and Joey Beauchamp when he made Human Arsenal submit RATING: B+ Overall, a very good solid show. From www.ringoffire.com... It's time to go back to the School of Tradition! As always, PPV Tuesday is a busy day for Ring of Fire as we'll be going to the PPV straight from the Fighting Fit broadcast. So for those who aren't yet sure whether to tune in or just want to know what'll be happening at Thames Valley Corner, here's the TV listing and the Pay-Per-View schedule... Honour and pride are at stake tonight. vs. KC Glenn vs. Petey Barnes for the ROF TV Championship He's proved himself a deserving champion so far this month. The next hurdle is, again, a tough one, as Barnes is still chasing the final title needed to join Don Henderson as someone who's held all the gold in Ring of Fire. Glenn will be looking to outlast British Samurai's reign, too, to prove a point following the formation of the European TV Championship. vs. Jonathan Faust vs. UK Dragon Both of these men have spent 2013 so far slowly drifting further from title contention. It's a safe bet that both men will want to begin a comeback with every match that comes their way; one of them will have that chance on Tuesday. vs. The Professionals vs. Extraordinary Men for the ROF Tag Titles After due deliberation the championship committee have elected to place this likely PPV-quality title defence on Fighting Fit, citing the limited time available within School of Tradition as likely to force a premature end to the contest. Ring of Fire would like to extend our apologies to our European viewers and promise that proceedings during the Pay-Per-View are still expected to be excellent value. --- School of Tradition vs. vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith vs. Byron vs. Phoenix II The replacement tag division contest for School of Tradition, this captain's match features three tag team wrestlers who are also highly decorated singles stars. A win here will surely provide the lucky captain with opportunity to earn a title shot in the near future. British Samurai has gone on record on a number of occasions as disliking the actions of Thompson and allies over the past several months. While there are no formal stakes here, the Samurai will be looking to teach the group's leader discipline, respect, and honour. vs. Davis Wayne Newton vs. Joey Beauchamp Davis' last grudge match drove Hugh de Aske from the company. That stipulation is now effectively banned by edict of the championship committee, so both multiple-time champions will still be around, but the shape of Thompson's organisation will be changed by the outcome of this match - even if bridges are rebuilt. vs. Axxis Jr vs. Human Arsenal Axxis is still looking for that defining moment in his ROF career, and a win over USPW Champion Human Arsenal would put him in line for a shot at that title and a first defining moment. For Arsenal the stakes are almost as high; a win here denies a dangerous competitor a chance at his championship. vs. Don Henderson vs. Art Reed for the ROF World Championship in a Submission Match It's champion against champion as Art Reed cashes in his second Commonwealth Cup title shot in two years. ROF: Fighting Fit Tuesday Week 4 February 2013 Thames Valley Corner 15842 in attendance RATING: 0.72 vs. Josh Jones vs. Mario Heroic Hmm... Not bad for six minutes bell to bell. I'd have liked to give it more, but Josh hasn't earned the kind of UK fanbase he needs to be given that long holding his own against Mario. At the same time, it's matches with people like Mario that will grant him that fanbase; a real dilemma. Naturally Mario carries the day here, but the match wasn't a bad one at all, particularly for a TV opener on a night we're also working pay-per-view. Mario Heroic defeated Josh Jones by pinfall RATING: C+ vs. w/ Buddy Garner & Roy Edison vs. Pure Perfection Ah, yes. Buddy's already past his prime, though his mat skills are such that he's a very valuable worker for us. But, like Roy, he has one significant issue from a pro wrestling point of view; MMA is not about telling stories, and it's not about selling. There are few better at these kind of pro wrestling fundamentals than Steve Flash, and during this match you could see the results of his work with them both developing. In reward, Steve gets to land the Flash Bang on Roy at fifteen minutes in, scoring a win for Pure Perfection and keeping them strong for their job. Pure Perfection defeated Buddy Garner & Roy Edison when Steve Flash pinned Roy Edison RATING: B- Axxis Jr then had some interview time. He drew the parallels between his upcoming PPV match against USPW champion Human Arsenal and Art's PPV title shot against the Ring of Fire champion, before noting that while he couldn't say either way whether Art would beat Don, he was confident of beating Arsenal. Good pop for it, too. RATING: B- vs. Billy Robinson vs. Nigel Svensson Here's another pair that could do with Steve's gift in selling. That said, they're both very confident in a great many other fundamental areas and the result gave us a very good contest even with that issue. Nigel's strong run thus far continues as Billy taps thirteen minutes in – the hyper extension armbar Nigel employs always looks utterly devastating. Nigel Svensson defeated Billy Robinson by submission RATING: B vs. KC Glenn vs. Petey Barnes for the ROF TV Championship Bad choices here; Petey and KC don't work well, as I keep failing to keep in mind. The result was... well, still TV-worthy, but not that great. KC retains with the Sunshine Band and I try to remember not to make this pairing again... KC Glenn defeated Petey Barnes by pinfall RATING: C+ We took a quick break there to run a recap of the growing acrimony between Davis and Joey, hammering home what's coming on PPV for a few last minute buys. RATING: B- vs. Jonathan Faust vs. UK Dragon I'm honestly not sure what happened here. They ran about as close as we dared to the twenty minute time limit before Dragon got the nod, and Dragon's one of our best – Faust, while weaker, is still a strong performer. But it just wasn't all it could have been... good enough, but not great. UK Dragon defeated Jonathan Faust by pinfall RATING: B- vs. The Professionals vs. Extraordinary Men for the ROF Tag Titles I figured it was time, and with the PPV being fairly busy I decided to rely on four men who can give me a great tag match as the TV main event. It was Extraordinario Jr who made the final pin, Ernest Youngman who was felled for it, but the real delight here was El Heroe Mexicano as he showcased a number of new takedowns and chain manoeuvres while still tightening up his transitions. His dedication, when he chooses to apply it, is always phenomenal. So we see a title switch to close out the month's UK TV. Extraordinary Men defeated The Professionals when Extraordinario Jr pinned Ernest Youngman RATING: A Finally, a last ditch effort to tick a few more buys up before the PPV – a highlight reel of Don Henderson's career to build toward his title match. It culminates in the announcement that Don and Art will be facing off in a submission match for the title, to settle whether US or UK methods are superior. RATING: B- Somewhat strangely, there was a forum suggestion that Steve Flash had too much exposure. That I don't get. Still, a great go-home show overall, and to a record rating. OVERALL: B+

ROF: School of Tradition Tuesday Week 4 February 2013 Thames Valley Corner 15842 in attendance BUYRATE: 0.61 vs. vs. Bulldozer Brandon Smith vs. Byron vs. Phoenix II Another tag captain's match; we explained that this had become the tag division's PPV match due to our belief that the title bout would not have had time to unfold with all the other contests signed for the evening. Nice stuff in the time allotted, too; Brandon and Phoenix really controlled, with Byron still showing some degree of difficulty settling into Ring of Fire, and it was that which ultimately gave him a problem; we ran a sequence where he blocked Brandon's charge with a facebuster and, while the bigger man staggered between himself and Humphrey, Byron almost tried to low blow Phoenix II before realising that Humphrey had repositioned himself. That hesitation saw Phoenix suplex him to the mat, and Brandon moved in, dropping Phoenix with a big boot before picking Byron up, landing a backdrop driver, and moving in for a successful cover. Every so often it's worth reminding our fans what kind of wrestling show this isn't. Bulldozer Brandon Smith defeated Byron and Phoenix II when he pinned Byron RATING: B To follow that up, we ran a highlights package of the tag title win earlier in the night – the European fans deserved a shot at seeing the key spots. RATING: B- w/ vs. British Samurai vs. Joss Thompson Sammy continues to grow as a performer; nonetheless, even with Thompson's remarkable skill level, this wasn't all I'd hoped for – though nor was it weaker than the opening bout. Still, the owner's bid to rein in Thompson's coalition through personal skill failed only after twenty-two highly entertaining minutes, when Thompson, already being lifted into the fisherman's suplex, succeeded in twisting and converting his momentum into a lethal Clean Cutter. Joss Thompson defeated British Samurai by pinfall RATING: B Phoebe Plumridge left her ringside post and entered the ring to console her client; the cameras then showed KC Glenn coming down to ringside and collecting the European TV Championship belt. A huge reaction considering Glenn's card position for this; the fans indeed prove to have been waiting for a payoff to the new belt's mode of introduction. RATING: B vs. Davis Wayne Newton vs. Joey Beauchamp Twenty eight minutes. Two men whose rivalries and friendships have dominated Ring of Fire for nearing five years. So much expectation was in the air for this bout, and the fans weren't disappointed; as always, Davis and Joey cut loose on each other and produced a spectacular contest which ended only after Davis managed to counter a Breeze Block with a drop toe-hold. The Newton's Cradle caught Joey off balance as he tried to regain his feet and, barely, Davis kept his shoulders down for three. Great stuff. Davis Wayne Newton defeated Joey Beauchamp by pinfall RATING: A Joey collected a microphone afterward. After a long moment, he grudgingly admitted that maybe Davis was the man who'd deserved the title shot, and told Davis that he wouldn't get in the way of the next one Davis earned. RATING: C+ vs. Axxis Jr vs. Human Arsenal Mmm... had this and the prior contest the wrong way round, then. It was the finish that did it, I'd guess, as these two had the crowd psyched almost the whole way; in the end, however, Axxis managed to land an overhead scorpion kick while in the air as Arsenal executed an Ammo Dump. Neither man was able to recover within the ten count, ruling the bout a draw. Axxis Jr drew with Human Arsenal when neither man could answer the ten count. RATING: B+ As the two recovered their wits, Axxis offered the USPW Champion his hand. It started as a chain wrestling spectacular, exploded into a brawl before tightening back into some superb tactical work, ending only when Don managed to counter a half-applied Dread Lock into the Scottish Deathlock. Art held out for nearly a minute before finally tapping out to a massive reaction. Don Henderson defeated Art Reed by submission RATING: A Don recovered his belt, slowly, still clearly worn down and exhausted. He finished collecting the fans' response, turned, and came face to face with Joss Thompson, who silently pointed to the title belt as we went off the air. RATING: B+ Very satisfying as cards go; a good night all in all as we gain some real traction. OVERALL: A

From www.ringoffire.com... Controversy surrounds the events of School of Tradition, as it saw KC Glenn take the championship belt held by another competitor, British Samurai. While a noted rivalry has slowly built between the two wrestlers over the European TV Championship's creation at the start of the month, the Championship Committee cannot condone Glenn's actions. Equally, the Committee does not support company owner British Samurai having awarded himself the new title after losing a previous belt; but the Committee also recognises that the Samurai has successfully defended his new championship since his dubious assumption. It is the decision of the Championship Committee that KC Glenn must return the belt to the British Samurai, its rightful holder. In order to assure that this situation does not deteriorate, Committee Chairman Terry Roberts has ordered that Glenn and Samurai are not to meet in the ring while either man holds a championship belt but that, once both men are free agents, the next Pay-Per-View Ring of Fire holds will see them do battle to settle this matter. Roberts added that with the high standard of competition in the TV Championship division and the historically rapid turnover of champions, he anticipated that matters would be brought to a head "within the next two to three months." Neither KC nor the Samurai were available for comment.

Domestic Issues "And you let her?" Optimus' voice is pretty easy to recognise, even down a crackling cellphone line from the current venue for the Irish leg of the house shows. That wasn't what was confusing me; what was confusing me was his news. It didn't make a lot of sense. "Yes, Terry. I did." "Well... why?" "I think... perhaps that is a question for you to ask her. Or an answer that is hers to give, rather." I mulled it over. One of the things about Optimus' upbringing, and particularly the way it interacts with his use of foreign tongues like English; he chooses is words with total care. The cadence of his sentences sounds off from time to time, but the meaning is always clear. More than can be said for, say, Don or JD, really. Especially JD. Bloody Londoners. "OK," I tried, accepting that he wouldn't tell me. "I'll ask her when she gets in. Thanks for letting me know." "It was no trouble," came the reply. "I think you will not be unhappy with her once you hear." I got a slightly queasy feeling to my stomach then. That surely meant... --- I was still up by the time Sherie's car pulled up outside the house. When she's been overseas, truth be told, I'm often not; unless we're coming back from a Showcase taping. Too much Ring business takes place early in the mornings. But Optimus' words had me too keyed to sleep, one way or another. As the front door opened I rolled my whisky glass between the palms of my hands, edgy now. "Hey, hon," she offered, a wan smile as she set her sports bag down. "How was your match?" I tried. Both our contributions hung in the air, awkward, not fitting a conversation. "I didn't wrestle," she said, crossing the room with not quite her usual confident stride. "And I know he called." She sat down next to me on the sofa, leant her head back, and turned to look at me. Her face was drained, tired, down... But not her eyes. Her eyes sparkled with the glee they always held. I smiled in response, involuntary; but I played along. "So... why?" "I don't think it's smart." "Honey... I know you'd been talking about retiring in the summer..." "Yeeah... I'm gonna have to bring that forward." She sighed. "I decided to check a suspicion last week. I've been ducking matches since, waiting for a confirmation." "Of what?" "That my last couple of matches haven't hurt the baby." The grin seems to spread from her eyes through her mouth and out til the whole room is beaming when Sherie smiles. "I'm pregnant." I breathed a sigh of... relief, my worries and anticipation both resolved. And then I reached down into the gap in the sofa. "Honey..." I slid forward, kneeling down and thanking my lucky stars I'd prepared for her retirement from the ring early, "...Sherie... will you marry me?" Her trademark guffaw burst into the room. "Oh, sure, the unimportant question," she grinned. "You betcha, buddy. Thought you had a choice, did you?"

From www.americanjoshi.com...
Going Out With a Bang Posted by: Remianen It's difficult not to call her one of the biggest names in American women's wrestling. Wanda Fish, also now retired, can boast more title reigns. Cat Quine has spread her influences throughout women's feds across the globe - going so far as to join BSC earlier this year. Victoria Stone has more or less single-handedly built up a respected women's division in one of the three biggest promotions worldwide. But we are talking of a name that ranks in their company. Cherry Bomb has retired, scuttlebutt attributing her decision - expected to end the year, rather than nearly begin it - to pregnancy. That may or may not be the case - regardless, the Bomb has laced up her boots for the last time, and a retrospective seems in order. Let's look at the numbers. Three tag reigns. Two AAA Contendership stints. One run as AAA Femme Fatale. Two runs at the top of the Canadian Women's Wrestling Federation. In and of themselves, the three top championships make her a standout in womens wrestling without needing anymore. But numbers aren't everything. Her CWWF tag championship run, paired with J-Ro, saw them crowned the first ever CWWF Tag Champions in July 2007, showing the deep faith Larry Wood and his booking team had in the duo. Such faith, indeed - they would go on to hold the belts until J-Ro left the company after a falling-out with then-booker Bart Biggz, her departure coming in May 2011. Never defeated for the tag belts, the Bomb found time to fit in a twenty-three month reign as CWWF Heavyweight Champion while holding them and regained that belt the very show that J-Ro's departure forced the vacation of the tag straps. That show, in June 2011, started Cherry on a path of victory that would end only when she signed a written deal with Ring of Fire, forcing her to leave CWWF and vacate the belt, in March 2012. Less than a year has passed since Cherry left CWWF and her mark is clear on the company, clearer in many ways than those left by the rotating string of head bookers that Wood's company has used. The Bomb was, quite simply, the face of CWWF, a company that from its inception put all its faith in her - and which was never let down. Ultimately, it was that written contract that allowed Alicia Strong to rise to the top. Cherry Bomb kept a Strong in the undercard or on the back foot during their regular feuds - no mean feat. 2008 was really the point where it all took off. Her AAA tag runs and her first Top Contendership stint took place much earlier in the decade, but having proved herself in CWWF for more than a year Cat Quine took the decision to bring Cherry back into AAA gold in September 2008, handing her the Top Contender strap. She would hold that strap into mid-2010, dropping it to Raven Nightfall, beating Quine herself the next month, and in July 2010 she toppled Alicia Strong for the AAA Femme Fatale belt. As with CWWF, once she got her hands on the belt there was no stopping her - she was never defeated for the strap and vacated it only on going to Ring of Fire full-time having been a regular member of its fledgling women's division (then perceived to be an 'interpromotional' division while Ring of Fire ran a separate brand, the reborn USPW, as a 'sibling promotion') from the start of competition. Despite the USPW/Strong connection, Alicia was passed over during selection for this division. The leading lights early on were Wanda Fish, Cherry, Kristabel Plum and joshi legend Huntress Makiko together with European standout Anna Ki. Ring of Fire booker Terry Roberts was rumbled as being involved with the Bomb backstage around Christmas 2011 - if you dig back in our forum archives you'll see much wailing and gnashing of teeth - which doubtless influenced the real-life Sherie Guthrie when it came time to sign the written contract - but curiously, the only booker who's dated the Bomb is the only booker never to give her a title reign, let alone one of the legends she's built up in North America. Rumours are already flying about Cherry's likely new role in ROF. Roberts is on record as liking to keep good workers employed after their ring days are over - why d'you think Steve Flash moved to England? - and Wanda Fish, also retired, is managing Human Arsenal at present. The Bomb would be an awkward fit there, but it's possible. Or, perhaps, the whisper about joining her other half on commentary for their European broadcasts might be true. If that's the case, all I can say is that Paris is in for a treat - Bomb promos all the time, rather than the drought caused by ROF's style to date. Whatever the case, we at AmJoshi wish Sherie Guthrie all the best in her retirement and thank her for the entertainment. If you missed her career, the standout moment for me at least is Bomb vs. Strong headlining AAA Deadlier Than The Male 2010, DVDs still available through their site or our store. Go learn.
From www.ringoffire.com... With all the other fallout from School of Tradition it's easy to forget the crucial part; Sunday's European Showcase is close at hand, and the competition doesn't stop yet! Matches expected include: w/ vs. British Samurai vs. JD Morgan for the ROF European TV Championship A controversial situation around the title following Tuesday's events, but the Samurai will look to prove he deserves his belt once again against a legend on both sides of the Atlantic, the 'Dean of Submissions' JD Morgan. All other matters aside, this should be an old-school mat classic. With the titles changing hands positions have shifted all round, and both of these teams are on a mission to earn a title shot soon and prove themselves in that environment. First, they face a challenge closer to home... ROF: European Showcase Sunday Week 4 February 2013 Parc des Sports 3522 in attendance RATING: 1.00 w/ vs. British Samurai vs. JD Morgan for the ROF European TV Championship Morgan's been absent from TV for the most part for quite some time, but doing well in the dark matches. Still something of a shock choice for a challenger, though, and I doubt anyone expected him to walk away with the belt – but he's a good, reliable old-school worker who I expected to mesh well with the champion. It was an... acceptable opener, weaker than one of the dark contests, which ended in a hair under fifteen minutes with the Samurai Stretch. JD heads back into dark work obscurity testing our younger talent. British Samurai defeated JD Morgan by submission RATING: C+ Next up ran a quick video package of the Don Henderson/Art Reed title match the prior week. We need to put out all the reminders we can of Art's ability with his two title losses in a short time, I'm thinking, and the fans dug it. RATING: B vs. The Disrespected vs. Los Leyendas A much better quarter-hour ensued as these two teams settled down to it. Both duos with a very solid grounding, they can put on a good show when they're given a chance and we left them to it here, with Keith Adams eventually scoring a shock victory roll counter on Ultimate Phoenix while Chojiro landed the Kitoaji Lariat on El Leon to prevent his springboard dive interception, turning the luchador over in mid-air. Great finish, good match to lead up to it. Adams and Phoenix continue to show real development in the ring. The Disrespected defeated Los Leyendas when Keith Adams pinned Ultimate Phoenix. RATING: B Joss Thompson was shown backstage next, telling Don Henderson that he wanted the championship shot against him “at Land of the Brave or at Trial by Combat, I don't care. I'll win either way.” Good reaction to it; Thompson's promos are taking on a hungry edge as he remains the leader of a stable in which he's the least decorated man. The frustration's getting to him... RATING: B- vs. KC Glenn vs. Mario Heroic I finally get around to a match that does what I told you was the plan when I split the TV championship; Mario goes over the champion here without ending his reign. Of the two, Mario is much closer to the main event and, indeed, may soon surpass Jonathan Faust as the outlier; Glenn needs more time to learn – and Mario has the additional upside of his US fame. So the Hero Attack keeps Glenn where I want him after sixteen minutes of excellent action, with this pair stepping up and delivering the best bout of the show so far. Mario Heroic defeated KC Glenn by pinfall RATING: B+ vs. vs. East & West vs. The Professionals vs. Tiger Force At last Tiger Force get a chance to work some real talent on TV. While clearly outclassed by both sets of rivals, they do their best in a match where all six men look good, though Marc Speed particularly so, and Byron looks to be learning new tricks in the tag division. The finish saw SUKI emerge from a beatdown to floor Ernest Youngman and wipe Greg out with a suicide cross-body just after Byron scored a blind tag, leaving the UCR veteran to be taken down by Nichiren Amagawa and made to tap. Good reactions by everyone involved in only fifteen minutes. East & West defeated The Professionals and Tiger Force when Nichiren Amagawa made Byron submit RATING: B I took a little microphone time next and discussed our upcoming matches; I told the eager crowd that they would determine the title matches at Land of the Brave. In the upcoming tag match, the man who scored the deciding fall would receive a title shot, with the challengers' side getting one against the man pinned, while the champions would face off. If the challengers won, then one title would still remain open to defence, and the triple-threat winner would become the number one contender for that title, and otherwise looking at a PPV title shot. It went down well enough, but there was a pause while the fans unpacked the stipulations which hurt the pop. RATING: C vs. Axxis Jr & Joss Thompson vs. Don Henderson & Human Arsenal Man oh man... I told these four beforehand that we could only spare them seventeen minutes to get this done and they delivered in such style that I started pondering making this a longer bout somewhere along the way. Don got a few quick pops by trying out some of Arsenal's signature holds and throws and incorporating them into his repertoire and the tags came fast and furious, with both champs wanting to stake a claim for total dominance and both challengers very active – as we pointed out on commentary, Thompson had to want the title shot, but he also had to be keen on ensuring that his side won so that Davis had a chance to earn one from the triple-threat. After all, Joss wasn't going to want his first defence to be against a stablemate... And so it was that, sensing danger, Joss tagged out to Axxis at the end, only to see Axxis duck Don's clothesline and sprint up the turnbuckles, launching into a Gravity Axxisault that began by kicking off Human Arsenal, sending him to ringside – and giving Axxis an uninterrupted shot at the three count. Thompson's frustration continues as Axxis Jr goes on to challenge Don Henderson at Land of the Brave. Axxis Jr & Joss Thompson defeated Don Henderson & Human Arsenal when Axxis Jr pinned Don Henderson RATING: B+ Don rose after the match ended, looking a little shocked, and then shook Axxis' hand in respect. A decentish pop for it, but Axxis' European following is not as strong as his British one – which is, in many ways, why we booked the win here. RATING: C vs. vs. Davis Wayne Newton vs. Jonathan Faust vs. UK Dragon Another shorter-than-usual main event saw standards rise even higher nonetheless; Dragon and Davis in particular had the crowd in the palms of their hands, but Faust has been developing his game strongly thus far in 2013 and managed to keep up almost all the way, even countering Davis' STF attempt into a discus slam just before Dragon came in with the Dragon Drop. He rolled Faust up – Davis intervened – Dragon and Faust produced a beautiful double-team suplex – another Dragon Drop and this time Faust had no rescue when Humphrey counted three. UK Dragon defeated Davis Wayne Newton and Jonathan Faust when he pinned Jonathan Faust RATING: A Great stuff, with excellent showings all round, a highly receptive crowd, and some solid forward momentum. And now Land of the Brave has both its main events in place, and to cap it all, a 0.41 spike in our rating. I really, really wish I had the faintest idea how a jump that big happened... OVERALL: A

From www.wrestlingvoyeur.com... UK Wrestling Takes A Hit In recent years the United Kingdom's prominence in the wrestling world has risen significantly, with a record number of noteworthy promotions currently active. However, three such promotions have recently suffered setbacks at varying levels. United Kingdom of Wrestling, the biggest name in British pro wrestling between 2007 and 2010, yesterday became the second British promotion this week to lose its TV deal despite owner Jake McDaniels also running the Union Jack Sports channel that broadcast UKW and industry giant Ring of Fire. McDaniels' press statement explained that with recent UJS' licence acquisitions there simply wasn't room for the four or five lowest-rating shows to maintain their slots. UKW was, however, the only pro wrestling show cut and ROF remain, their ratings still on the rise. Further down the totem pole is ROF child promotion Cornerstone Pro Wrestling, for the past year a fixture on smaller sports networks. It seems that despite the recent addition of former UKW star Stevie Stoat and young talents like Wade Orson and Super Apprentica, CPW just didn't have the clout it needed, something that will frustrate head booker Bryan Holmes. Finally, in dire straits all round is fledgling promotion Championship Wrestling from Wigan, currently beset by debtors. Barring a spectacular turnaround, CWW doesn't have many shows yet to go...

From www.ringoffire.com... With title matches now settled for Thursday's outing to America, talk has turned to other things, most notably the confrontation between Don Henderson and Joey Beauchamp on Saturday Night with Patrick Kielty. ROF: Fighting Fit Tuesday Week 1 March 2013 Hibernian Arena (Scotland) 5000 in attendance RATING: 0.87 The show opened with footage taken from last Saturday's late-night chat show, with somehow-still-getting-work Patrick Kielty conducting an interview with guests Don Henderson, Nadia Snow and Joey Beauchamp. The footage in question? An impassioned argument about the merits of the tag division as a way to learn your craft versus singles competition from two champions, one of whom came up in each style. Apart from the fact we had to treat kayfabe as legit, I felt it had gone pretty well, and it set up the major matches for the card during this portion of the interview (which had ostensibly been arranged on the occasion of the ROF belt becoming a World Championship). The crowd seemed much more into this than they'd been interested in the interview that ostensibly precipitated the whole thing and, overall, I felt they were right to be. There was tension between the TV crew and a little tension between individual teams on the tag side, and ultimately that decided things; there was less overall tension in the tag ranks and a good deal more experience. Chojiro got the Kitoaji Lariat out of nowhere on Petey Barnes and the tag teams cut the solo stars off from breaking up the pin in just under fifteen. Some good pops. A series of big pops took place and the fans didn't even seem to mind overmuch when the match ran to the time limit. It says something about the talent that a lack of chemistry and an inconclusive finish can still be so well received. No, you're no more shocked than I am. The mic can't pick up much, but it does pick up an overall air of resentment that none of them currently have a title shot. Suddenly, Davis grins. “Hang on,” he says. “No one's booked us in matches for Land of the Brave, right? That gives us some leeway...” RATING: C+ vs. vs. vs. vs. vs. El Heroe Mexicano vs. El Leon vs. Extraordinario Jr vs. Phoenix II vs. Phoenix III vs. Ultimate Phoenix Last time we ran a match like this I let my mouth run away with me on commentary and referred to it as a 'luchapalooza', leaving me in the doghouse with Sammy and El Leon for weeks. For the record, every other masked wrestler then on the roster loved the name as well as the concept – six man match, one fall, all lucha libre stylists – and have begged me to at least book the setup again. And, in a lot of ways, this one can develop a number of issues within the tag division, as well as allowing the less-popular luchadors a platform to get over alongside people who understand their style from the inside. As with many multi-man matches where they're both active, the teamwork of the Extraordinary Men decided it, with El Heroe willingly sacrificing his own shot at the win to allow his team captain to score the fall, in this case pinning Phoenix III. Great work; a really effective use of fifteen minutes. Extraordinario Jr defeated El Heroe Mexicano, El Leon, Phoenix II, Phoenix III and Ultimate Phoenix when he pinned Phoenix III RATING: B I took the mic next and addressed my comments to the boys in the back, informing them that, by virtue of my role as chief of the Championship Committee, I was making a new match for Land of the Brave. It would involve six men, I said; on the one hand, Davis Wayne Newton, Joey Beauchamp, and Joss Thompson. But also the American debut of British Samurai and of Jonathan Faust, and I'd add another to the match based on performance before the show. Oh, and the three musketeers shouldn't get too ****y about things... it was going to be a six-way match, not a tag. RATING: C vs. Davis Wayne Newton & Joey Beauchamp vs. Don Henderson & Mario Heroic Oh my Lord... to garner this kind of reaction in less than seventeen minutes... This was the other match that spun out of Don and Joey's argument, with Don challenging Joey to tag action and Joey stipulating that using Billy was too weighted toward Don with their experience. Mario and Don have both been trying new tricks on the house shows and loved showcasing them on TV for the first time, and the others were their usual stellar selves. Add in a shock ending – Joey falling to the Hero Attack and Mario really staking a claim toward main event status – and the crowd went berserk. We may have peaked early. Don Henderson & Mario Heroic defeated Davis Wayne Newton & Joey Beauchamp RATING: A Once more I take up the microphone. This time, to tell the crowd that I'd been planning to leave the sixth name a little longer... but Mario just out and out proved he deserved a place. RATING: C vs. Art Reed vs. Nigel Svensson Well... we didn't peak too early, but I'm kinda sad that this matchup got squandered on free TV. Just time to mark it down for returns later; no partocular chemistry motivator, but this was good, and it really took advantage of the main event slot and a full twenty-five minutes to showcase them. Nigel's the other man orbiting near the main event for me right now, and this seemed a good time to test him – and this is a flying colours pass. Art carries the day as the definite main eventer, scoring with the Dread Lock at 25:36. Lovely technical display. I love that we can run a major lucha match and this and see the crowd pop for both. Art Reed defeated Nigel Svensson by submission RATING: A Yeah, a very, very good show. Going to Scotland is a risk – our stars aren't as widely celebrated there due to our early TV not reaching the Caledonian networks – but it paid off here and will mean less of a risk next time. ROF: European Showcase Sunday Week 1 March 2013 Omsk Hall 2000 in attendance RATING: 0.87 After the usual pre-show dark work, Joey Beauchamp opened the show in the ring. He took the microphone and talked about his recent unlucky streak, referring mostly to his title shot, his battle with Davis, and losing his tag match on Tuesday. He announced that for him it was now time to start again and build back up. And he was going to start “at square one... no, you know what? Let's be honest. Even on my worst day it's time to start at square three. Steinberg, get out here.” RATING: C- vs. Crusher von Steinberg vs. Joey Beauchamp Well, you know what? This was a lot better than I'd expected. I'd go so far as to say it was one of the better opening matches we've run. Crusher opened strong, using his strength to great effect whenever he could get his hands on the faster man, and the result was great; Joey's always used a lot of brawling style in a high-speed kind of way and knew just how to amp that up for this one. The crowd were actually pretty behind Crusher for quite some time, but in the end the Breeze Block scored when Crusher was too stunned to block it. Joey Beauchamp defeated Crusher von Steinberg by pinfall RATING: B- w/ vs. vs. British Samurai vs. Nigel Svensson vs. Wael Hossam in a Submission Only bout for the ROF European TV Championship Wow; Sammy pulls out one of his best to date, and Wael looks like an instant star by staying in there with the other two. Nigel's very near to the move upstairs, but I don't want to catapult he and Mario simultaneously, so Nigel taps out to the Samurai Stretch here after nineteen minutes. That loss also makes Wael look a little better as he at least doesn't take the fall, so this match did a lot – and provided some real enjoyment at the same time. British Samurai defeated Nigel Svensson and Wael Hossam when he made Nigel Svensson submit RATING: B Some rare mic time next for Mario Heroic and KC Glenn. Both these guys are clearly on the way up, and Mario is... OK, where KC's awful. This was mostly setup for the tag match later on, with these two painting themselves as the men with a name to make, and the upcoming match being the perfect way to do it. A pretty solid reaction, considering. Brandon took the win here, dropping Steve Flash on his head with a backdrop driver and scoring the pin a second ahead of the break-up. Good stuff all round, and while this wasn't the best the tag division can do, I wasn't expecting it to be. Education is the main goal here. The Stunners defeated Buddy Garner & Roy Edison, East & West and Pure Perfection when Bulldozer Brandon Smith pinned Steve Flash RATING: B Microphone time next for Don Henderson. And here's the real demonstration; Don's so weak on the microphone that even his ridiculous level of overness can pull him up to the same level of crowd reaction when he discusses his upcoming match with Axxis. He promises that he'll still be champion two weeks from now, despite the Land of the Brave contest. Ultimately, though, nothing special. RATING: C- vs. w/ vs. vs. Axxis Jr vs. Human Arsenal vs. Jonathan Faust vs. Joss Thompson And the crowd reaction swells again as these four lock up. Faust started out with something to prove, and Axxis played a calculating, technical expert on the outskirts of the contest, picking off people as he got the opportunity, but the star of this one was Joss Thompson, who was best described as a fast-moving dervish of pent-up rage. Usually the finish to a match like this involves all four men scoring a big move before the end, but that didn't happen this time; Thompson clotheslined Faust out of the ring, spun around and floored Axxis with a DDT, and then scored with the Clean Cutter on Human Arsenal before covering for the pin with extreme precautions against a kick out. Targeting the champion in the match to take the loss like that struck all of us on commentary as being more of Joss' frustration as he continually failed to score a title shot. Joss Thompson defeated Axxis Jr, Human Arsenal and Jonathan Faust when he pinned Human Arsenal RATING: B+ Joss was joined next by Davis Wayne Newton and Joey Beauchamp, and the three of them showed the guys backstage how you cut a promo. All three of them acknowledged recent losses, gave credit to their opponents, and then reaffirmed their goal to be at the top, promising that they'd make themselves the biggest spectacle in Ring of Fire. The crowd kept switching between heat and popping; these three are major figures who the fans are involved with, and the fact they've spent the last twelve months closer to heel than face hasn't yet changed that. RATING: B- vs. Mario Heroic & KC Glenn vs. The Shooters Nice stuff here. As the man in the main event, Mario spent the bulk of the time in the ring for his team, clocking up about twenty minutes of the thirty-two that the bout ran, and paid the price in the end when, exhausted, he couldn't reach KC in time to save him from tapping out to Don. While this wasn't the best main event in the past few weeks, it was a good one, and in Europe, I think it's enough – and Mario continues to look good, while KC takes a loss to slow things down and give him time. The Shooters defeated Mario Heroic & KC Glenn when Don Henderson made KC Glenn submit RATING: B+ And there you go; only one real complaint from the forums, as some of the fans feel Wael Hossam hasn't done enough to merit being allowed to hang for so long. But we'll pull through. OVERALL: B

ROF: Fighting Fit Tuesday Week 2 March 2013 Coventry City Stadium 4745 in attendance RATING: 0.85 w/ vs. Human Arsenal vs. Remmy Honeyman The smart man would put his money on this being Human Arsenal's weakest match of the year; it was, and to an experienced eye Arsenal was clearly the better perfomer, not just the better worker. On the other hand, Remmy deserves some exposure, and he works hard. I figured throwing him against Arsenal might work as well as the Don/Roy match last month; not quite, but good enough for the start. Seven minutes, Ammo Dump, pin. And oh my God it was worth trying out; the Machine and KC turn out to just know each other, which figures, as KC's a big fan of Japanese tapes on which the Machine's built up quite a record. As a result, this just blew me away – much better than I'd expected, and a great contest. The Machine goes back on the list of people to build up soon and reassess. A great little contest that got the crowd roaring inside eight minutes. A good response to the idea, all told. More lovely work here, and a big shock for the crowd at the finish; whatever they'd expected here, they were sure the finish would involve either Heroe or Greg getting the pin, and beyond that they just expected a lot of lucha libre action with some world-class grappling thrown in by Greg as he did his best to defend himself. Almost what they got, too; but just after El Heroe managed to flatten Greg, he ate a roaring elbow from Phoenix III who kept going, ran up the ropes, and scored on the tag champ with a high velocity legdrop, scoring the upset pin. Midway through the seventeenth minute he managed it, coming screaming off the second rope with the Siempre Peleando spinning leg lariat to fell both men – deliberately pinning Phoenix II immediately afterward. Huge reaction from an enthusiastic crowd. Great work here, but the superior teamwork of Joss' team began to tell early, and the Clean Cutter became an inevitability during the final four minutes. Twenty-six minutes in Jonathan Faust walked into it and couldn't get up. Taken from www.ringoffire.com... Welcome once again to our American fans! Coming to the Grissom Auditorium this Thursday will be our second major US show, ROF: Land of the Brave. We aim to deliver a great range of wrestling styles suitable for every fan. Matches scheduled for the night include: vs. The Stunners vs. Dos Phoenix for the USPW Tag Titles in a Tidal Booking Match Former Coastal Zone tag champions, the current USPW tag supremos look to lock horns with a pair who've held OLLIE tag and trios gold on a total of eight occasions between them, the legendary Dos Phoenix. As if that wasn't threat enough, Phoenix III has held the biggest title in both OLLIE and SOTBPW while neither Stunner has reached the very pinnacle of any promotion. With both teams very familiar with multi-fall matches and both teams having made names worldwide in tag wrestling, this promises to be a hard-fought epic battle. vs. Extraordinary Men vs. The Professionals for the ROF Tag Titles It's rematch time as the Professionals look to reclaim their gold from the young but already famous duo of Extraordinary Men. You may remember El Heroe Mexicano as one of the men who conquered MPWF; you may remember Greg Gauge's nine months on top of RIPW. One thing's for sure, however; once you've seen these four men in action, you'll remember them as tag team champions worthy of the name. vs. vs. w/ Dean Daniels vs. El Leon vs. Sergei Kalashnov for the USPW National Championship All three of these men are veterans of the American, Mexican, Japanese and British circuits. All three of these men have held championships all over the world. With a combined total of twenty-one title reigns between them, two men look to add to their individual tallys while one man will aim to do whatever he can to stop that happening. Whatever happens, it['s likely to be a wild ride... Most of them have done so on multiple occasions and even in different nations. A match made by the Championship Committee, these six men have nothing but pride on the line - but there's a great deal of pride at stake here. That being said, he's never risked the belt against the Iron Luchador before. Axxis Jr proved he could do it in South of the Border; now, as close as he can currently come to a hometown crowd watching, he has the chance to take what he was denied at the Commonwealth Games and become champion anew. Now, however, he's champion - in the one part of the world where the UK Dragon has never held a title. Neither man has any reason to hold back here... Phoenix III wasn't really on the ball as he might have been tonight – I think he was bugged to have to lose so close to home turf – but Eagle and Phoenix II are still shining examples of what dedication to learning can do for you. The first fall went to Brandon with his backdrop Driver on III, the second saw Phoenix II pull one back with a shock counter to score the pin, and the final fall – a full-on tag match now – ran another six minutes before the Superbomb Splash at 17:37, with the Stunners successfully defending their title for the first time. Good pops and I'm feeling good about this. The Stunners defeated Dos Phoenix by two falls to one RATING: B- Joey Beauchamp came out next to talk up Brandon. The OLLIE man putting over his Coastal Zone friend got a small pop, but only a small one. That, however, certainly doesn't mean he was the only one worth watching; I think Ernest had been saving up a lot of neat spots to debut when he first got to work his home nation – makes me feel a little bad about the fact Optimus told him to take the fall, but in fairness Greg's got a better US reputation from his RIPW run and from his brother's TCW work. The big spot to finish the match; Extraordinario had been staggered, beaten down, and set up on the apron for the DOA slingshot into a sitout piledriver. As Ernest yanked the ropes, launching Extraordinario into the ring, El Heroe springboarded off the top rope, hooking Greg into a huracanrana and preventing him from applying the 'driver while Extraordinario used the time to flip forward and land on his feet. As Ernest turned around he was met with the Mexican Standoff and Extraordinario picked up the pin. Good stuff and a massive pop. We only had a quarter of an hour but they managed to live up to the previous twenty minutes with it. Dean managed to keep his title by the skin of his teeth, capitalising when Sergei missed the Eastern Bloc and took himself out of the match to drop El Leon with the cradle piledriver. Very nice stuff, and I think Sergei's still coming along. The crowd reaction to this wasn't much weaker than to the six-man tag Tuesday in a country where all six men are well known and have dedicated followings. Virtually everyone busted out their best, including some new moves, and the crowd were really enthusiastic for all six men by the finish – which saw Davis take Joey down to the ground and hold him there, Joey Breeze Block Faust and refuse to pin him, and Joss score the Clean Cutter on Sammy to get the pin. Still, good enough to maintain the night's standard so far and keep the crowd happy, and as well received as our last US defence. In time, we'll get there. The finish was tailored by Don to give the lucha fans what they wanted; his sometime-finisher sometime-setup for the Deathlock, a tilt-a-whirl sitout powerbomb. It's a variant that generally gets pretty good pops, and the tilt-a-whirl innovation got the crowd happy. Sadly, he didn't manage to hit it before an Indian Deathlock applied by Axxis went awry, leaving Don with a percussive ankle stretch. Dammit... time to rest the champ again, I think. Twenty-six minutes bell to bell, in fact, to deliver the best-received match we've had in the Grissom Auditorium. Dragon came within an ace of the title numerous times and escaped three attempts to hit the Ammo Dump and an extra two shots at locking in the Trench Warfare, but in the end the Ammo Dump made it and Dragon couldn't quite kick out. ROF: European Showcase Sunday Week 2 March 2013 Omsk Hall 2000 in attendance RATING: 0.86 vs. Axxis Jr vs. Jonathan Faust A higher-than-usual-profile opening contest for this evening, but not one that greatly outstripped the usual opening fare in reception. Mario's repositioning ahead of Jonathan is more or less a fait accompli at this point, which is mostly to the good – it allows me a new challenger for the TV Championship belts, and I'd go so far as to say he'd likely be a perfectly serviceable champion at that level. Axxis controls comfortably, while allowing Jonathan to get in a decent selection of his best tricks, and nails the Gravity Axxisault after fifteen minutes. Nothing special, nothing to complain about. Axxis Jr defeated Jonathan Faust by pinfall RATING: B- vs. East & West vs. Los Leyendas The decision on which bout to put on first – this or the eventual opener – went back and forth four or five times. In hindsight, with the 'start with a bang' theory in operation, I misjudged. Phoenix is practically back up to his pre-neck-injury speed and skills, and El Leon has been improving his mat game steadily across the house shows, allowing the luchadors to compete on the same level as the submission specialists. In the end, it didn't matter; when your opponents are high risk, sometimes you can just weather the storm until they make a mistake, and Ultimate Phoenix did just that around twelve minutes in, rendering himself subject to the Amagawa Total Lock. The tap-out took thirty seconds, but it was assured from that moment. East & West defeated Los Leyendas when Nichiren Amagawa made Ultimate Phoenix submit RATING: B+ A quickie video next; Art Reed in a classroom as part of a charity initiative to help kids with their fitness. It shouldn't be too surprising; the Samoan Machine has been pro a long time, but I can't help but think of him still as a rookie. In any event, he helped Sammy to one of his better title defences and in so doing made himself a little more prominent. Good fan response. Just one fall and we could only spare twelve minutes, but that didn't matter; all six men made the fans sit up and take notice. I remember, when I started with ROF, having an awful, tumbledown tag division. I remember despairing for years. That doesn't happen now; we've just exploded past that barrier. All three teams showed improvement in one or another area and the Disrespected continue to make their case for tag gold with Chojiro pinning Buddy Garner after a Kitoaji Lariat. The fans seem pretty happy with that, and they should; the Disrespected have been given a slow, slow build to allow them to reach a point where I'm happy to start looking at giving them tag gold. I'd hoped that this would be better; all three girls can plot matches out wonderfully, and the dark time has built them small fanbases, but this just wasn't good enough and the fans seemed unhappy it ran as long as it did. Ultimately, though, that kind of thing happens; it was time to hand the Womens Championship across to someone else, and I felt it was necessary to do that live and on air – so the Night Faller caught Dragon Assassin by surprise and Raven bypassed the champion to collect her first ROF gold. Should have been better. It's not on a level with the exceptional triple threats we ran from the tag division a couple of weeks ago, but nonetheless this was great stuff that had the crowd instantly hooked. I was fairly tight on the time – they only had thirteen minutes – but the crowd went berserk and the finish, which saw Phoenix II pin Chojiro with a northern lights suplex, was very well received by the crowds if not by Chojiro. Dos Phoenix are definitely gaining traction – finally. Phoenix II defeated Bulldozer Brandon Smith, Chojiro Kitoaji and Extraordinario Jr when he pinned Chojiro Kitoaji RATING: B A different look for Billy Robinson, backstage – or, rather, an old look, as the Parasite mask makes its return having last been worn by UK Dragon during last year's big title feud. Billy gives what for him is a pretty good tag promo and says that he's putting on the mask to remind people of his roots and to motivate him; he talks about his love of the tag division – which for years he's essentially not been part of – and how he and his new tag partner guarantee to shake things up. Then he introduces his partner – Wade Orson, a star at CPW who's under a second Parasite mask. We used Wade semi-regularly as someone for the big names to beat easily for hype videos; the mask should allow him to earn the crowd's respect before they link him to that. Decentish pop tells me that while the CPW TV show lasted it amassed a fanbase. RATING: C vs. KC Glenn vs. DJ Reason for the ROF TV Championship Glenn's TV title run is treading water for the moment as I look for the right man to hold the European belt – all of the build here, such as it is, is for the eventual Sammy/Glenn rematch, and I'm trying to raise the expectations by drawing out the build. As such, KC gets DJ Reason's debut match for us to give him an easy defence and let me assess Reason's potential company position. Well... KC was leagues ahead of him, clearly the better man, but Reason managed to hold on well enough to boost this into an enjoyable if not exceptional defence, so he's got the chance to continue to do better. Chances are his ROF time will primarily be spent staring at the ceiling, though – I don't think he can carry a major run. With the Number One Contendership for Trial by Combat as yet undetermined, I told the audience what our website followers already knew; that a four-man tourney would be held tonight to determine the place this month. I dwelt on the records of the participants; Davis Wayne Newton the favourite, Art Reed the decorated veteran, Joss Thompson the hungry, motivated main event mainstay, and Mario Heroic the man on a wave of form. The crowd are hyped for it. RATING: B- vs. The Parasites vs. The Professionals We have had no tag team debut this solid before now. Billy's years of tag work have clearly paid off even without his usual tag partner by his side, and Wade showcases a great skillset in his first ROF match. His only real issue is that as yet he's no ring general, and the other three men can easily handle that. Greg and Ernest weren't happy about losing to this pair, but to their credit they didn't let that affect their performances and as a result even as they fall – with Greg tapping to the Capital City Crucifix – they look stellar. Brilliant stuff in sixteen minutes. The Parasites defeated The Professionals when Billy Robinson made Greg Gauge submit RATING: B+ vs. Art Reed vs. Joss Thompson First qualifying round to the tournament, and my goodness this was excellent. If the crowd ate up the prior tag match now they were absolutely ravenous, as Art tried to contain Joss' aggression and find a way through, only to be overwhelmed by the sheer hunger of Thompson, falling to a Clean Cutter in the fourteenth minute. Joss Thompson defeated Art Reed by pinfall RATING: A vs. Davis Wayne Newton vs. Mario Heroic A similar story here in length, but not in style; Davis and Mario played this as two experienced warriors with slightly different styles trying to orient the match to give themselves the advantage. Mario's speed just barely came through for him here, allowing him to twist free of the fisherman's suplex, hit the ropes, and be in with a Hero Attack before Davis could recover his balance and be ready to counter. Mario Heroic defeated Davis Wayne Newton by pinfall RATING: A vs. Joss Thompson vs. Mario Heroic Sadly, the final match lost a lot of that. I think this was chiefly the strain both men were under, as they'd both had a lot of work tonight, but it wasn't as good. Joss played the same aggression card and it did, mostly, work, but Mario was always just that step too far to really control, just that little too fast. With contendership within his grasp Joss was, again, shut down frustratingly. You can feel the crowd beginning to sympathise, and it's slowly allowing us to reorient his character. Mario Heroic defeated Joss Thompson by pinfall RATING: B Mario, to his credit, offers to shake Joss' hand after the match. Joss was brilliant here; his facial expressions showed us a real struggle inside as his frustration bubbled to the fore. He clearly wanted to lash out – no easy turn this, but it's not planned to be – but restrained himself, simply leaving without returning the shake. A big reaction from the crowd, and I know we have them again. RATING: B Ideally this show could have been better, but I can't complain about a card with that much entertaining wrestling. It just wasn't quite in the best sequence. OVERALL: B
From www.wrestlingvoyeur.com... Things are looking dark for fledgling British company Championship Wrestling From Wigan. A mere twelve months after their founding by Louis Figo Manico and the initial show, the company has had to announce that following its anniversary show financial issues will compel the company to close its doors. Measures already taken have included the buy-in and takeover by Arson Wells, but in spite of this the company simply cannot break even. A great many suggestions as to the problem have been made - poor booking by Ali Bloxsome, the intense competition in the UK with Cornerstone Pro Wrestling leading the smaller promotions by some distance, and the dearth of solid technical wrestlers - Manico touted the company as being a throwback to the days of Wigan's famous hook-style mat wrestling, but with the primary modern advocates of the style being occupied elsewhere a great deal of the CWW roster was made up of musclemen and powerhouses who'd gradually lost other venues in which to work - most notably Skull DeBones and T-Rex, both former US stars.
This was pretty much the article that did it. I spent the rest of my office hours staring at the CWW site, watching the few freebie matches they had online - mostly Louis' somewhat routine title defences, the best of which was back in January before I hired his opponent, Roy Edison, away - and shaking my head at the roster. Everything about the site - advertising, design style (a pleasing retro sepia-tinted look maintained by someone who called himself 'shipshirt', dominated by vintage-looking event posters), choice of pictures, and belt logo promised a throwback to an era before flashy gimmicks, strange costumes, and high-impact moves. Ring of Fire was pitched as being old school, but the truth was - even before I came in and began luring high-flying talent and colourful masks from the world over to work for us - we'd never been as traditional as Louis was aiming for. I could see what he'd hoped for. With Nigel, Billy, Don, and ROF alumni Walter Morgan and Merle O'Curle stars the nation over, the style was back in vogue, and the market to see that kind of grappling was sufficient to make a little nest-egg into a tidy going concern - if you could only get the talent. But he hadn't been able to, and nor, it seemed, had Arson. I slouched down to the company gym, watched Sammy and the Samoan Machine spar for a while. When they were done, I called him over. By Thursday morning I was on the phone. Thursday afternoon saw me on the train to Wigan, ready to meet with Arson's bank manager. By close of business Ring of Fire had a second development contract and Championship Wrestling from Wigan had a new lease of life. One which, if we could do it, I aimed to prevent it from wasting. I dropped by ROF headquarters on my way home, grabbing an armful of tapes and DVDs from various rookies and independent workers. I spent Friday curled up on the sofa with Sherie watching tapes from around the world, putting together a shortlist of young talent to contact for developmental contracts – along with a couple of older talents to look into as trainers. I'd love to bring in the British Pro Wrestling School graduates, but Sammy's currently on a student-of-the-game-only kick that I won't gamble my job with – not over the green guys, anyhow. Hopefully they'll improve on the indies until I can get him looking at bolstering our developmental scene again. A number of them have found positions with UEW.
