Not a universal thing, you understand; but the more intensely interested in wrestling the fan, the more chance there was I'd hear a question about 'Kerisu Rokewell' or something when I met them. “I guess, really, that this was something they saw as worth tapping into – a little extra hype for the obsessives and the other fans wouldn't have to notice. “So one Wednesday in the middle of August ninety-eight, I went out and wrestled for the title in the semi-main against Yoshifusa Maeda, and in the main event you had Stuey Ferdinand, Sherlock, and Demon Anger up against Ray Diaz, Koki, and Saionji Omura. “The story they gave out was that Saionji had gotten two buddies to back him up for vengeance on Sherlock on accounta Bryan put Saionji in the hospital during a tag title match back in April, and Saionji needed his backup because Bryan had buddies. They let the fans figure out why these two were siding with Bryan. “Didn't make a huge amount of sense – Stuey had been Saionji's partner and the injury lost them the belts about a week after they got them – but that wasn't the point; there was a new group of gaijin throwing their weight around to be repelled, and there was a link for people hunting for it. “It definitely helped Sherlock's career over there pick up speed. Suddenly he's in the main event, even if he lost, and he's being treated seriously. “He wasn't a young lion anymore, and thanks to Philly Pro he was getting something like a push out of it. Half of the matches we had for the rest of the tour were positioning us all into one nasty group – by this point, there were a lot of us with GCG.” -- Phil Vibert smiles slightly. “I'm sure I'll go into all this in much more detail for the DaVE DVD,” he says, “because, really, it's about DaVE more than Philly Pro – but it's going to be important, as time goes by. “Other than Dangerous raiding us periodically for talent – which he did, really, a lot – our biggest issue through the first half of ninety-eight was the fact that with that talent he was putting on at least one show a month that blew anything we could do out of the water – and that kept him the guy that people talk about. “In building DaVE, one of the things I found instrumental was that people will watch one, if you will 'name' promotion and call it their favourite – but they'll also have a favourite indy company, and the really dedicated fans – the kind we relied on – will often hold that indy company up as being better. “Because, often, a lot of the time it is better; it gives them stronger stories, better matches, sharper interviews... A big-name company takes the famous and it uses the fact that its audience already knows them, already feels connected. “What the Stomper does today, what I did for more than ten years, what Dangerous and Big Dunc and Preston Holt, what we all did was go out there and make you care anew, every show, from the ground up. “And I will go on record – a lot of the DaVE shows at the time were getting reactions on the same level that Christian Faith, Sam Keith and Sean McFly were getting for Supreme, but without relying on those names. If you'd taken a group of people who'd never heard of these people – assuming you can find someone on this planet who appreciates wrestling who doesn't know the name of Sam Keith – and you showed them Attitude Adjustment and The World is Watching back to back in nineteen ninety-eight, I would be absolutely confident that they'd prefer Attitude. “By getting the TV deal, and especially by going onto PPV, Dangerous made his boys not one of the strongest indies, but undisputably the weakest of the big name promotions, visibly trading off the efforts of another, bigger company. “And that left us sitting pretty at the top of the heap. XFW were putting on good matches, but they didn't make you care. When Big Dunc won the King of the Deathmatch the second year running, the bottom really started to fall out of their market. Rapid Pro had Cousin Ezra as champion...” Vibert bursts out laughing. “And Preston Holt knows how to run a company. I have no idea what was going on there. “I wouldn't have thought it at the time. But the very best thing Horatio Dangerous ever did, from DaVE's perspective, was succeed that fast. Money troubles starting then would kill the company in the end.”

Marlowe, as ever, remains stoic, glowering at the camera with intensity as Whistler regards his viewers thoughtfully, clearly trying to find something to say. “There's nothing much more to this than you're probably expecting,” he begins. “What I find so frustrating about this... “I was doing this a year ago with Travis. He got a friend. I got a friend. And now he's gone, beaten half to death by his so-called friends – and I'm still doing this!” Whistler's fist slams into the wall in his frustration. “I'm not a man who lets people cheat him, Tornado. I'm not a man who backs down from a fight. “And we got cheated out of those titles. We got cheated when we tried to take them back. Now the pair of you are hanging on to them – and one of you never even earned them! “I say prove yourselves. I say show us what you have. I say earn what you have. “You beat us fairly, and I'll step down, I'll get off your back. Until then, no matter what, I'm going to keep coming for you. As God is my witness, I will make you be legitimate tag team champions or I will take those belts away from you.” Marlowe nods agreement. w/ vs. Charlie Thatcher w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. Human Arsenal Charlie Thatcher remains the fastest powerhouse in Philly Pro, hitting fast, hitting hard, and offering virtually no letup for the Arsenal to use in finding his feet, let alone mounting a comeback. Spurred on by Goldworthy's ringside exhortations, he looks to take Arsenal's head off, concentrating a total focus on the head. And the Human Arsenal finds himself virtually unable to fight back, to claw anything back. In the end, having perhaps scored with two punches and made a few more wild swings, having been unable to hold a hammerlock on the sheer power of Thatcher... Arsenal is propped up, battered, in the corner. For the first time Thatcher opens up a space, backing off for the running big boot – and as it comes in the Arsenal almost seems to fall forward, but at the same time an arm snakes out, hooking the leg, jerking Thatcher off his feet into a schoolboy pin. It's astonishment, more than anything, that stops Charlie from kicking out in time – he does, a shade after three, and practically flings the Arsenal over the bottom rope and to the mat. Human Arsenal defeated Charlie Thatcher Rating: D+ Bluegrass Blues comes on as the Arsenal scrambles back up the ramp. Cahill looks likely to go for the Arsenal, but Chase, for whatever reason, stops him with a hand on his chest, allowing the undefeated Maximum Champion to scramble backstage in safety. “Ladies and gentlemen,” she begins. “I have good news for the people of New England,” waving an arm in a wide, all-embracing gesture. “As of this month, the man beside me has seen his undisputable talent recognised. As of this month, the man beside me has signed to become New England Wrestling's latest leading light, and I'd love for you all to watch that happen. “But this happened due to our work here. It happened due to the reputation spreading from Cahill's Corner. “And it's not yet enough. So...” She looks around. “Which one of you is Barry Biggs?” Another youngster arrives, blond, eager, and in the ring fast. Cahill stands near-immobile, watching, until Emma has exited the ring, has got clear of trouble. And then he moves forward. Biggs tries a dropkick, only to be swatted aside. Cahill drops a knee on the downed challenger and leaves it there, trapping him against the canvas, while he systematically fires punch after punch into Biggs' face, bloodying him early and keeping on going. The camera comes to settle on Chase's face, serene, near-expressionless, and beautiful as she watches. “Ronnie,” she says in the end. “That's enough.” He stops almost immediately, rolling out of the ring to accompany her back to the locker room. w/ vs. Dog Fyte w/ Professor Nero vs. The Natural A much more even contest than the opening match, it'd be hard to say that this was a better-received match. The Dog runs rampant early on, facing a more technically-assured wrestler, but after a while Damian Carvill starts to brawl back – and the fitness guru's power allows him to match the Dog. Dog Fyte manages to overhaul the Natural toward the end and mounts the ropes for the Beware of the Dog – but in an astonishing moment, Carvill manages to cut off the diving spear, lifting the Dog and shifting his weight into the inverted atomic drop/slam combination known as the Nature Calls. Three seconds later it's all over, giving Barber a chance to air the notion that Dog Fyte is a tag team expert, not so much a singles contestant. The Natural defeated Dog Fyte Rating: D+ Chris Rockwell strolls down to the ring, accepting the microphone and looks around the fans before climbing up onto a turnbuckle, sitting there, looking at everyone. “I've been back here a while,” he begins. “Over a year, now. And I've been friends with Brent nearly as long. “In spite of that... in two weeks, it may well be that I take the championship from him. You all know I'll be giving it everything I have to offer.” He smiles slightly. “I don't expect Brent to do any less. First off, he doesn't. Second, in two weeks he isn't the Pride of Philadelphia anymore. “Someone else – someone not either of us – gets that. So if I beat him, he loses two titles in one night. “But it's the new can-I-do-that, you know? I chased Pete Hall for months to finally decide whether it was him or me-” And now Money For Nothing starts to play. Rich Money appears, backed up – as ever – by Floyd Goldworthy. “You're thinking too far ahead, Chris,” he fires off. “You're thinking past your match with me tonight.” “Planning on breaking a leg?” Rockwell shrugs. “Not going to happen, Money-” “No, no, nothing so easily healed.” Money smiles. “You know already – hell, I warned everybody, I flat-out told you this was going to happen – I found a way inside everyone's head. I found a way to beat you all. And you, Chris, you were the easiest of all. Your cracked obsession with winning pure at all costs... “You were so happy, weren't you, to finally do it? So happy to beat the Pistol? You felt like it proved something. “What if I told you I paid him to take a dive?” The disinterest vanishes off Rockwell's face. A hint almost of despair touches his expression before he frowns. “You're lying,” he says. “Maybe,” Money shrugs. “Possibly. Even probably. “But I could admit I was lying right now and it wouldn't help you one bit, would it, Chris? All of a sudden you once again don't know **** for sure. “And it's not just Pete. Everyone here, Chris, everyone but me... They all wrestle because they have to pay their bills. They need money, Chris! “And me... I'm Money. I could buy every win you ever have. And you can't win. “So here's how it is. Maybe, Chris, and I'm only saying maybe – maybe you can beat me tonight. Maybe you can beat me next time. “But we both know... you're never going to be sure again. And we both know that's going to eat you from inside. I give it a couple months before you're a shell of a man. Because you'll never know,” he finishes mockingly “if you have what it takes to be Chris Rockwell.” The seething resentment of Rich Money fills the arena. vs. w/ Chris Rockwell vs. Rich Money w/ Floyd Goldworthy It's huge anticipation as they measure each other and collide, and after the first five minutes the question really does become whether either of these men could call themselves the better after this match. Money is uncharacteristically clean in his tactics, focused and concentrating on giving it his all – and firing a lot of verbal jabs at Rockwell as he goes, the standout line being “Maybe I could be Chris Rockwell!” As they continue to work toward the time limit Money seems to stumble, almost feeding his arm to Rockwell for the takedown into the Fujiwara Armbar – which Rockwell seizes on almost instinctively, and before he can really go to town with it Money taps out vigourously. Chris Rockwell defeated Rich Money Rating: C The match over, Money rises and offers his hand for a handshake; Rockwell stares at him for a moment, shaking his head, and Money repeats the gesture. Rockwell starts to reach for it – and Money repeats the stumble from the end, feeding his arm in precisely the same way he did at the end of the match. The handshake is fast as Rockwell realises the implication and swings, fist connecting with Money's chin as the show goes off the air... -- As the build to Pride of Philadelphia continues, Philly Pro put together a show that continued to develop characters without sacrificing action or losing the attention of their viewers. The year before I'd let Dan and Ramon go, which had been painful. It turned out to be a good thing for Ramon, mind, as he rented a U-Haul, drove all the way across country, and hooked up with Cliff Anderson at the Coastal Zone. “He'd been tag champ the best part of a year by the next time we had to cut anyone. Dan, on the other hand... It'd been a year and a half since we cut him, and he'd had one match for a tiny little place. “I kept track. I couldn't help it. I wanted... I wanted to be sure that the people we'd taken in were going to be able to at least carry on with wrestling, to make appearances at least occasionally and make a bit of money from it, even if they were never going to be able to go full time. “Almost everyone we had on our books worked for somewhere else as well, but I was very, very aware of the guys who weren't. Travis, for example... I wanted to keep him on, if only we could come to terms. “I was making as sure as I could that Billy Jack, Rick Sanders, Jean... and a couple of the others, I forget exactly who... were in a position to stick with us, draw some paychecks on a regular basis. In some cases, we weren't even their major breadwinner. The HGC guys obviously made more money from Hollyweird, between the longer TV shows needing more faces and just the fact that Sam Strong had a lot more cash to offer than we did. “So did a lot of the boys with Japanese connections – especially, actually, Bryan. “While they were slowly turning the Philly Pro group into a faction in GCG, Bryan got one of the biggest breaks you can get – a title shot against a real talent, Yoshifusa Maeda. “We were re-watching that tape for months, over and over. He didn't win like Pete had, but while Pete's matches had been incredible every time... “Bryan actually pulled out something that could've been match of the year, and went from an underdog job boy to one of Japan's hottest properties overnight. Blew my mind. “We were beginning to have a problem. We'd built our name in part on names that were big with other companies, and many of our other big names had come to their attention, signed on with one big league or another. If the GCG group got too big in Japan, we knew we'd lose them. When – we all figured it was when – JK Stallings started offering a few more of his crew exclusive contracts, we knew we were going to lose a lot of other names. “And Dan Stone had signed a number of agreements with some of our others – and his company looked like being in position to justify handing out exclusive deals itself any time soon. “If any of those happened, we were going to have a very off-kilter roster and we knew it. “But what else could we do? To hold our own boys down on exclusive deals we'd have needed to offer a lot more than we could justify. We were running right on the edge as it was.”
Damn you Rich Money for trying to put doubts in my boy's mind ! For some reason, I really like Chris Rockwell. Maybe because he's a different kind of face and it makes him stand out.
Chris is definitely gelling for me now, too. Oddly, that only seems to have come about since we got TV, after which he went from a catchphrase to an actual motivation. And I'm glad that the Money confrontation worked - one of those spur-of-the-moment ideas just before I booked the show.

The Pride of Philadelphia tournament requires the winner to get past three opponents in one night. As we come for the first time to Kentucky to compete in the storied Perry Hall, this week's News of the War will see a gauntlet series - can one of the opening contestants go all the way, or will someone have an easier time before picking up the win? Tom Gilmore w/ Kit Hatoyama vs. The Punisher Winner vs. John McClean Winner vs. Horatio Dangerous Gilmore has every excuse not to win here... I don't think it weakens him. Meanwhile, Dangerous is still a main eventer. His stable just broke up. Clearly, that's the start of a storyline, which can go in two ways... either he starts winning, or he starts losing. But if he loses here, it's not about him... everyone will focus on what Gilmore has done. Anyway, he's losing to arguably a bigger star. The match I'd want to see to kick off that storyline is the match where he loses to a midcarder, not the one where title contender Gilmore beats him. So I say this goes the other way -- a last run for Dangerous, in which he tries to earn the title that has eluded him throughout his career. I could be wrong, though.

Gilmore puts him away relatively quickly with the World Shatters in order to move on through the gauntlet, much to the fans' relief. Tom Gilmore defeated The Punisher Rating: D- Back from commercial and the camera is in the interview set, with both Dangerous siblings stood side by side. “You've seen me wrestle my heart out here,” Adrian begins, “and so far, I've got close to nothing to show for it. But that's kind of misleading. “As far back as I can remember, I wanted to be a wrestler. More than that, I wanted to be a tag team wrestler. And I trained hard for just that. And I practiced to be just that. And no matter what, I knew I could make it as a tag man. Because I've always had a secret weapon, as far back as I can remember.” Richard takes up from here. “I lost count years ago of the hours that Adey and me spent on the same side in the practice ring at home, taking on Dad and his buddies. Taking on anyone we could train with. Anyone we could test ourselves against. “We have done this all our lives, and we'd already have started on it here if, six months ago, I hadn't suffered a serious injury in a match in Japan. “The doctors told me it would take me a year to recover enough to wrestle again – if I ever recovered enough. “I told them then and there that they were wrong. That me and my brother were born to be tag team champions, and that injury wouldn't stop us, bribes wouldn't stop us... “Nothing can stop us one day holding championship belts. Nero, your boys already have a challenge waiting – but if they get by Philly's Own, we'll come for them. If Philly's Own beat you, we'll skip right on past you.” vs. w/ John McClean vs. Tom Gilmore w/ Kit Hatoyama A much better second match of the evening, as might be expected from this return to an old feud. McClean takes Gilmore to the mat early, aiming to show that his pure wrestling style has improved sufficiently to overcome Gilmore's unpredictable antics – and Gilmore responds in kind, though most of his more inspired counters are almost disguised as dance steps or other goof-off moments. To emphasise the technical nature of the contest, Gilmore opts not for the World Shatters but for his unusual submission hold, kneeling on the downed McClean, a reverse headlock clutch applied to force McClean's neck up and backward until he submits. Tom Gilmore defeated John McClean Rating: C- Once again the cameras return to the interview pit. Horatio Dangerous is there, hands on hips, obviously composing his thoughts. “I came to Philly Pro,” he begins, “at the start of last year. I've been wrestling the best the company has to offer through it all. Now we're on TV, we're on Pay-Per-View, and... “I got to be friends with Tommy Cornell. I brought Jack Giedroyc and JD Morgan both into this company, I set out with those guys to prove that English wrestling is the best on the planet. I neglected my family to do this. My son spent a month in hospital and I missed it. “I realised some months ago that I was wrong. That the way my father taught me to wrestle is a good way. A great way. But the best? “There is no best. You look at Brent Hill, one of the best American technicians alive today. Look at Bryan Holmes, making records in Japan because of what he learned in Canada. “And you can look at JD Morgan, too, for great wrestling. I'm not going to argue that one. “But his ego... his ego is my fault. And his ego's led to cheating and obsession, and I went along with it for far too long. “JD, I know you're entering the Pride of Philly. The same goes for me. So maybe I'll meet you there, and maybe I'll have to take a little longer before I get a chance. But I let this happen, and that means it's up to me to stop you. “You're not so old I can't beat some sense into you.” vs. w/ Horatio Dangerous vs. Tom Gilmore w/ Kit Hatoyama Gilmore is showing the strain of having already wrestled twice, but he's still game as this bout begins. Both men shake hands, Dangerous bows to Hatoyama, and then the match is on in earnest. It's difficult, really, to say that either man really gets the upper hand early, as Dangerous, perhaps still worried after his recent run of losses, is slow and cautious, which unfortunately allows Gilmore to recover his breath. This is the third time these men have met in recent history, and any attempt to go for a match-ending move is well scouted; what the two men put on is nothing less than a masterclass in counter-wrestling for the longest time. It's clearly going to take something new to tip the balance, and that something new comes when Demon Anger stomps down to ringside, watching the action with hands on his hips. Gilmore can't stay focused on the match after that, and eventually Dangerous manages to find the half-nelson suplex and score the win – moments before Anger is in the ring, going for Gilmore. Horatio Dangerous defeated Tom Gilmore Rating: C It takes Hatoyama and Dangerous in concert to stave off Anger's assault and get Gilmore to safety, but they manage it and Anger goes back to angrily prowling the ring, soon joined by Floyd Goldworthy and Anger's fellow behemoth Charlie Thatcher. The two huge men exchange a fistpound before going back to their prowl, scrutinising the audience carefully, emanating danger. Goldworthy raises the microphone. “Too bad, Tom,” he begins. “Rest up – on Saturday, if you want a chance, you've got to do that again, only you've actually got to win. And as Horatio Dangerous is about the worst athlete in the whole thing, you're going to have a worse time of it. “Put simply, you aren't going to win, Tom, you don't have a chance.” He smiles. “Quite simply, the winner will be one of the biggest-earning investments in professional wrestling. The winner will have me standing by their side when they accept the trophy. “And you can consider that a solid Gold Guarantee.” He glances around. “Look at what we've done in such a short time, people. We will own this company sooner rather than later, and you've just got to get used to it. Anyone in our way is going to have a hell of a time. “Tom, you brought in your little action pack. That made you target number one. “You're not anymore. That honour goes to the man who put the Krusher in the hospital. But you're still high on the list, Tom, and rest assured you're going to get yours.” He grins. “Give some thought to dropping out before this Saturday,” he says at last. “There's no real need to break you in two. But Anger will, if your paths cross, and he'll make sure it's worse than it was last time, guaranteed. “Or you can accept the new life. It's your choice.” -- Traditionally, the Great Lakes shows have given Philly Pro the most trouble with fan response, but the story told here seemed to overcome that. I remember that the warm-up match before the show went well, too. “After the show ended, we went to the local bar like we always did. I had my bags with me, I had a midnight flight out to Japan because GCG wanted me out there. I figured a couple beers and out in plenty of time with a cab...” He glances away, suddenly bashful, and chuckles. “I kinda missed it.” -- “Ricky...” Adrian Dangerous considers his wording carefully. “Ricky is not great with body language. If a girl's interested in him, she pretty much has to pin him down and tell him. He's always been like that as long as I can remember. “I don't think he's ever done the asking out, either. It's not that he's not interested; it's that he gets focused on something and he won't get off the train to do something else. And he's always had wrestling to focus on, I mean, there's virtually nothing else for him. The time he was off he was working on the company website just to keep his hand in. That's how we moved to pre-show updates online. “He just zones in, is the thing. I've always had my music too, always had time for other sports. But Ricky... there's just wrestling.” -- Emma glances off screen for a moment, smiling slightly. “I don't usually take no for an answer,” she says. “I guess I'd gotten interested before he got injured, because I really went for him the moment he was back on the road. He didn't have much of a chance once I started, if I'm honest, you know?” She giggles for a moment. “We were never going to last. I knew that, I don't think he did, but we were never going to last. But it was a lot of fun while it did. “So he missed his plane by about twelve hours...” -- “I will admit,” Phil Vibert says, almost smiling, “that when I was talking to Emma and she mentioned her new man, I thought 'That explains it' straight away.” The smile broadens to a grin. “Totally clear all of a sudden why she jumped ship. I'd been wondering – I mean, she and I had been friends some time. Walking out on that had surprised me.” -- “Total panic,” Richard continues. “I just about managed to get to the show in time, but I hadn't had much chance to sleep and I hadn't had a chance to get my marching orders. Lucky I was tagging; I literally got half the match brief stood on the apron listening to Takuma while we were being introduced. “I'm still not sure why Hanshiro didn't change his plans, but I guess it was a combination of things. First, this was what we'd been building to when I got my injury and second, the Philly Pro unofficial faction was getting a bit of momentum under its feet. So my first match back in Japan, myself and Onishi Takuma went out there to pick up where we left off, and we wrestled Hiroaki Nakasawa, who wasn't quite the big name he is now, and Shotaro Ikina – and we beat them for the GCG World Heavyweight Tag belts.” He smiles almost apologetically. “I pretty much knew I was going to be a tag man for a while at that point. I kinda settled down to that. “And I knew, now, that there was no way I could use my father's gimmick anymore.”

Prediction Key: 1. Joel Bryant w/ Herb Stately vs. Tom Gilmore w/ Kit Hatoyama Tom Gilmore is easily the better guy to go on from this point. Jobbing him out would make no sense. 2. Steve Flash vs. Rich Money w/ Floyd Goldworthy Just a feeling - a heel vs. face match-up works better in the semi-finals. 3. Horatio Dangerous vs. JD Morgan w/ Wanda Fish Don't want to see either man putting themselves over yet - I like to go for a draw or two here and there. This gives fuel to their continuing feud, and allows for the winner of the next match to have a bye. 4. Demon Anger w/ Helen Bach vs. Human Arsenal Why this? Well, The Arsenal now has a title and his character is coming together a bit more, so he doesn't need the streak. Demon Anger, Charlie Thatcher, Helen Bach, Floyd Goldworthy - we've got a lot of potential run-in here. Tom Gilmore vs. Rich Money Gilmore is a damn good wrestler, and I think he'll produce on a higher level than Money. Also, we need Gilmore in the finals. Nobody vs Demon Anger PRIDE OF PHILADELPHIA Tom Gilmore vs. Demon Anger And here we have the contest that all my previous predictions have been building towards. Demon Anger was pitched as Gilmore's main opponent as of the end of the last TV show. He's a monster, known across the country. He's already received a bye in the semi-finals. How will Gilmore ever defeat him? With an high-flying skills and technical expertise, with fighting spirit to match anybody on the roster, and with charisma to spare. Tom Gilmore for PPPW Champion! PPPW Tri-State Championship Brent Hill (c) vs. Chris Rockwell See, in the end, I'm looking forward to the Pride of Philadelphia match more.
