WWF 1992: The year that wasn't

Recommended Posts

“What do you mean he doesn’t like the ending?” I was sitting in my office plotting the next steps in the ever changing title storyline when Pat Patterson came in and delivered the news.

“I mean he doesn’t like the ending. He said it makes him look weak and it will kill his character and him momentum by losing.”

“By losing to one of the most over heels on the roster? How does he propose this goes down?”

“Easy, the attack happens as already decided, but then he “Hulk’s up” and gets the clean victory.”

“So let me get this straight. Not only does he want to go cleanly over one of our top heels right now, but he wants to do so after being brutally assaulted by our other top heel?” My face was turning red. I had heard about the political game Hogan had played, but I had never witnessed it before now. I quickly dug through my filling cabinet looking for Hogan’s contract. “There’s got to be a loop hole.”

“There isn’t, believe me this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. You’ve only got yourself to blame you know, calling him out in front of the others the way you did over the steroids.”

So the truth came out. This was Hulk Hogan exacting some sort of revenge over what happened last week.

“Alright fine, if that’s the way he wants to play it then that’s fine.”

“I thought you’d see it our way. I’ll go tell Terry right now. I’m telling you him getting the title is best for everyone.” This comment actually made me laugh, which just confused poor Pat even more.

“Let’s get one thing straight Pat. I’m letting him have this win because I don’t have to much of a choice, but I’ll be damned if Hulk Hogan gets the title after this stunt. He wants to flex and show his power in this company that’s fine, but I have power to. So if it’s a pissing contest he wants then it’s a pissing contest he’ll get.”

“You don’t want to go down this road kid.”

“Yeah I do, in fact, I’ll leave it up to you Pat to let Mark know about the change in his match. I’m sure he’ll be…happy.”

I actually had a grin on my face when Pat left the office. Mainly because after telling him to be the one to tell The Undertaker about the change he looked like he had seen a ghost. Now, how do I fix this problem with Hogan?

WWF Proudly Presents…

Primetime Wrestling

Live from the Civic Center in Mobile, AL

Aired On: USA Network and Sky Sports

Attendance: 8,309

Pre Show:

Haku and The Barbarian Vs. Scott Taylor and Chris Walker

Haku / The Barbarian defeated Scott Taylor and Chris Walker in 5:58 when Haku defeated Scott Taylor by submission with a Tongan Death Grip.

Rating: D-

Notes: I may end up needed a solid heel tag team in the future and Haku and The Barbarian seem to fit the bill nicely. They get the rub here over a couple youngsters who could be big in a few years.

Main Show:

Greg Valentine Vs. Dino Bravo

Greg Valentine defeated Dino Bravo in 9:53 by submission with a Figure Four Leglock.

Rating: C+

Notes: Greg was always better as a heel in my opinion, but a solid gimmick and who knows what he may be capable of. Plus he helped Dino improve his technical skills.

The New Hart Foundation come out next say that it’s time for the Beverly Brothers to put up or shut up. The Hart Foundation is for real and they plan on showing them they mean business.

Rating: D

The New Hart Foundation Vs. The Beverly Brothers

The Beverley Brothers defeated The New Hart Foundation in 13:10 when Blake Beverly defeated Jim Neidhart by pinfall with a Powerslam.

Rating: C

Notes: A bit of a surprise here with the Beverly Brothers getting the rub after constant underhanded tactics. Owen and Jim are beside themselves, but The Beverly Brothers roll out of the ring laughing.

Next up he have the Intercontinental Champion Bret Hart backstage with Gene Okerlund. Bret says that he is the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be because of hard work and dedication. He dares anyone in the locker room to try and train as hard or prepare for a match as intensely as he does. Bret tells the kids of the world to succeed all it takes is a little hard work and determination.

Rating: B-

Davey Boy Smith Vs. The Mountie

Davey Boy Smith defeated The Mountie in 7:51 by pinfall with a Running Powerslam.

Rating: B

Notes: Everyone’s favorite Brit wins this one and helps to boost the crowd. Davey Boy is another possible contender for the title.

The Undertaker Vs. Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan defeated The Undertaker in 10:37 by pinfall with a Big Boot and Leg Drop. During the match we also had Ric Flair run in and attack Hogan.

Rating: B

Notes: Turns out these two don’t click, which is a bit sad all things considered. Not a bad segment though, except for one minor thing… Hogan used his creative control to block The Undertaker winning.

After the match Hogan didn’t have time to celebrate at all as The Undertaker immediately sat up and attacked Hogan. Meanwhile Flair entered the ring with a chair and together the pummeled The Immortal one.

Rating: A

Final Rating: B-

Notes: Well it’s a step in the right direction. I’m trying to book the way the WWF did back in the early 90’s, but it’s a little hard with the games engine. It almost demands that you book Main Eventer vs. Main Eventer. I’m going to keep playing with it, hopefully I find a happy medium.

“We have another winner?” That was Jay standing at the door shortly after Superstars.

“Please don’t tell me you’re talking about what I think you are.”

“Steroids, this time it’s Road Warrior Animal one half of out tag champs.”

“Why is it the only time I see you is when it’s bad news?”

“Because if you see me out in a bar you might just deck me.” I saw a grin crawl across Jay’s face only briefly.

“You’re probably right. Well you know what to do. Fine him and let him know that if he comes up hot again not only will he be suspended but he can kiss his tag titles goodbye.”

“I’ll let him know, maybe that will be enough to get Hawk involved and talking to him. Any more drama with Pat?” Jay seemed to enjoy the fact I had stood up against Vince’s right hand man. And surprisingly I haven’t been chewed out by Vince yet.

“Not really. He let me know last week that Hogan was using his creative control to change the outcome of the match. Thought he was will sly about it to.”

“Yeah, Pat can be a real prick some time, especially when he feels like somebody is stealing his thunder.”

“Yeah there wasn’t much I could do about Hogan so I told Pat he had to be the one to tell The Undertaker about the change.” Jay let out a bellowing laugh that echoed down the hall.

“How’d Mark take it?”

“I’m not real sure, I haven’t seen Pat since, think he killed him?”

“You couldn’t get that lucky. No, one thing about Mark he’s a real professional. It wouldn’t surprise me if he didn’t scare the hell out of Pat though.”

“Good, that’s what I was going for.”

“Be careful when handling Hogan kid, he’s a real head case. Not to mention Vince loves him. Doesn’t matter how well your booking is if Hulk Hogan decides to call Vince and complain you may just be job hunting.” I could only nod at this small piece of advice. I knew how much pull Hogan had in this company, but would he really call Vince about losing a match?

Primetime

Live from Vets Memorial Stadium in Des Moines, IA

Aired on: USA Network, Sky Sports

Attendance: 8,195

Pre Show:

Tatanka Vs. Salvatore Bellomo

Tatanka defeated Salvatore Bellomo in 5:10 by pinfall with an Indian Death Drop.

Rating: D

Notes: I don’t really have a lot to do for Tatanka right now. So we use him here to keep his undefeated streak in tact (I think he was still undefeated at this point) until we can think of something.

Main Show:

Randy Savage Vs. Barry Horowitz

Randy Savage defeated Barry Horowitz in 8:48 by pinfall with a Macho Elbow.

Rating: B-

Notes: Wow. I didn’t realize Savage could carry such a great match. His stock just went up a lot in my book.

Big Boss Man Vs. Rick “The Model” Martel

Rick 'The Model' Martel defeated Big Bossman in 8:08 by submission with a Boston Crab after blatantly cheating.

Rating: C

Notes: The Frenchman pulls out it out in this one after a series of under handed tactics. I’ve got a few ideas for Martel. If he plays his cards right this could be a big year for him.

Bret Hart Vs. Earthquake

Bret Hart defeated Earthquake in 4:48 by pinfall with a Backbreaker.

Rating: B-

Notes: This was a non title match for those who are interested. It should also be noted that for whatever reason Shawn Michaels made his way down to ringside to go some guest commentary.

After the match Bret celebrated his victory with the crowd. (B+)

Michaels made a comment during the celebration that the fans were cheering for a hack who he could beat with one hand tied behind his back. (B)

Bret heard this comment and got in Shawn face telling him if he doesn’t watch what he says he will find out why he’s called the Excellence of Execution. (B)

Tag Team Title Match:

The Legion of Doom W/ Paul Ellering Vs. The Nasty Boys W/ Jimmy Hart

The Legion Of Doom drew with Brian Knobbs and Jerry Saggs in 13:11 following a double count out.

Rating: B

Notes: This was a little bit of a punishment for The Legion of Doom hoping they realize to get their act together.

Hulk Hogan and Sid Vicious Vs. The Undertaker and Ric Flair

Hulk Hogan and Sid Vicious defeated The Undertaker and Ric Flair in 15:21 when Sid Vicious defeated Ric Flair by pinfall with a Choke Slam.

Rating: B

Notes: Hogan again used his creative control, although I thought that was going to happen. So I made it a point to at least give the victory to Sid. It’s a small victory for me but a victory none the less. And despite his best efforts my storyline is still pretty much going as planned.

After the match Sid and Hogan celebrated their victory. Looking like an unstoppable force.

Rating: A

Final Rating: B+

Notes: By far my best show of the year. We used a lot of big names in this one, but it wasn’t as loaded as I thought it was going to have to be. The storylines we have in place are moving along nicely. And we are just over a week away from The Royal Rumble.

After the show I was visited once again by Jay. I looked up from my sheet of paper just long enough to see another drug result in his hand.

“Let me guess another steroid user?”

“Not this time kid. This time we have Dino Bravo. And it’s not steroids, it’s cocaine.”

“Wow…any idea how long this has been going on?”

“No, but if I had to guess I would say awhile.”

“I was afraid you would say that.

“So, what’s the punishment?”

“I hate to do this with the Rumble right around the corner, but suspend him for a month without pay. Tell him to get checked into rehab, and let’s hope that he gets clean.”

Jay didn’t say a word to me, he just nodded and left the office quietly. Leaving me to wonder if I had made the right decision or not.

After the match Jack Tunney came to the ring. He said due to Hogan’s recent success he is going to award him the WWF Championship Title. However, it’s not Hogan who’s music hits instead it’s Sid’s. Sid says he should be the one getting the title, after all he’s the one who is named the champion. Before Tunney has a chance to respond the lights go out and soon The Undertaker is standing nose to nose with Jack Tunney. Jack swallows hard and says he has rethought his decision. At the royal rumble there will be a three way dance for the Championship title. The Undertaker then grabs Jack by the neck, but Hogan’s music hits and he races to the ring and takes out The Undertaker before he can assault Jack.

Live from the Civic Center in Peoria, IL

Aired On: USA Network and Sky Sports

Attendance: 9,949

Pre Show:

Scott Taylor Vs. Million Dollar Man

Million Dollar Man defeated Scott Taylor in 4:58 by submission with a Million Dollar Dream.

Rating: B-

Notes: Scott Taylor is one of the few young guys who I can see actually having a chance of doing something in the future. That makes DiBiase the perfect teacher for the youngster.

Main Show:

The Beverly Brothers Vs. Genichiro Ten and Koji Kitao

The Beverley Brothers defeated Genichiro Ten / Koji Kitao in 8:12 when Beau Beverly defeated Kitao by pinfall with a Powerslam.

Rating: D+

Notes: The Brothers continue to look strong heading into the Royal Rumble.

After the match the Beverly Brothers accepted the challenged laid before them by the New Hart Foundation and said at the Royal Rumble Owen is going to wish he never tried to follow in his brother’s footsteps.

Rating: D

Big Bossman Vs. Typhoon

Big Bossman defeated Typhoon in 4:47 by pinfall with a Bubba Slam.

Rating: D

Notes: These two had great chemistry which is a little sad considering they only had a D match. It also had to do with lack of flow something I didn’t even think to look at in a Bossman match.

Greg Valentine Vs. Rick “The Model” Martel

Rick 'The Model' Martel defeated Greg Valentine in 7:52 by submission with a Boston Crab after blatantly cheating.

Rating: C+

Notes: Another surprising win by the Frenchman. He’s starting to slowly make a name for himself even if he is doing it unfairly.

Ric Flair Vs. Marty Jannetty

Ric Flair defeated Marty Jannetty in 12:54 by pinfall with a Roll Up.

Rating: C+

Notes: Perhaps the most disappointing match of the night. Who would’ve thought Flair would ever be in a C+ match. They lack of chemistry played a part I’m sure, but I’m still blown away by it.

After the match a recap of the championship story line is shown. Ending with the announcement of the 3way dance at the Royal Rumble.

Rating: A

Intercontinental Title Match:

Bret Hart Vs. The Mountie

Bret Hart defeated The Mountie in 15:46 by pinfall with a Backbreaker. Bret Hart makes defense number 1 of his WWF Intercontinental title.

Rating: B-

Notes: Another bit of a disappointment, making this episode of Prime Time a complete bust. I thought Bret had what it took to carry this match to a better grade, and once again I stand corrected. Shawn Michaels was once again at ringside for commentary on the match.

After the match Bret does his usual celebrating with the crowd. (A)

Michaels once again called Bret out calling him the worst display of talent in the WWF. (B) Bret once again heard this insult and told Michaels if he was such a hack then Shawn shouldn’t have any problem facing him at the Royal Rumble. Shawn was more than happy to accept the challenge. (B)

Final Rating: B-

Notes: Again I expected better performances from the last two matches and didn’t get it. We are still going into the Royal Rumble with a solid card. As long as we can make that work everything else should start clicking for us.

Would you possibly consider adding dates to your reports? It's very hard to figure out the timeframe of what is going on.

Of course, didn't even think about that. I'm so used to using a small fed where there's only one show a month I didnt even think that with three shows a week plus a PPV it's easy to lose track...thanks for the comment, and for reading

<p>I was walking out of the arena heading to the company plan to head out to the Royal Rumble. We had a few more things creatively to put together but we were pretty much ready to go. As I neared the company limo I saw something I thought I would never see. About a hundred feet from the limo a small group of drunk fans had formed a circle. As I neared the circle I heard shouting and saw a couple of guys in the middle pushing and going about. At first I thought nothing of it, until I realized who one of the guys were.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#FF0000;">“You don’t know who your messing with brother, we need to take a step back.</span></p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#008000;">“What are you going to go Hogan, leg drop me?”</span></p><p> </p><p>

Hogan’s face was getting red while the crowd roared with laughter. This couldn’t be happening, surely the most over star in all of professional sports was not about to get into a physical altercation with a fan. I dropped my bags and ran full steam into the crowd nearly tackling Hogan.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#0000FF;">“Have you lost you’re f****** mind!”</span> I wasn’t thinking about anything at this moment. Especially not the fact that Hogan’s arms were bigger than my legs.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#FF0000;">“He started it dude. I was just walking to the car and this guy got all crazy. I told him no one…”</span></p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#0000FF;">“Shut up! Just shut the F*** up!”</span></p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#FF0000;">“No one talks to Hulk Hogan like that.”</span></p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#0000FF;">“We are on the way to the f****** Royal Rumble and you’re getting in a pissing contest with a fan! If I didn’t need you tomorrow you would be gone do you get that?”</span></p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#FF0000;">“What are you talking about brother? Vince would never let me go.”</span></p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#0000FF;">“Vince has given me complete control over everything, including you. Now grab you’re f****** bags and get in the car!”</span></p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#FF0000;">“I’ll try to control myself better next time.”</span></p><p> </p><p>

Sure what I said was a complete lie, but I was hoping Hogan didn’t realize that. I apologized to the crowd and gave the man and his three buddies front row seats to the Royal Rumble hoping to smooth things over. If this is what Hulk Hogan brings to the table then I’m not sure I want anything to do with him.</p>

WWF Proudly Presents…

The Royal Rumble

Live from Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY

Sunday Week 4 January 1992

Aired on: PPV

Attendance: 30,000 (Sold Out)

Pre Show:

The Nasty Boys w/ Jimmy Hart Vs. Koko B. Ware and Jim Powers

Brian Knobbs and Jerry Saggs defeated Koko B. Ware and Jim Powers in 7:31 when Jerry Saggs defeated Jim Powers by submission with a Pit Stop.

Rating: C

Main Show:

Virgil Vs. The Mountie

The Mountie defeated Virgil in 5:46 by submission with a Boston Crab.

Rating: D+

Notes: Just a bit of a warm up match to get the fans more anxious for what’s to come.

A video is shown next highlighting this history between The Beverly Brothers and The New Hart Foundation.

Rating: D+

The Beverly Brothers Vs. The New Hart Foundation

The New Hart Foundation defeated The Beverley Brothers in 8:27 when Owen Hart defeated Blake Beverly by pinfall with a Hart Attack.

Rating: C

Notes: Owen and Jim pulled out the victory in this one despite the cheating of The Beverly Brothers. All four of these men could really do some great things in my tag division given enough momentum.

After the match The New Hart Foundation celebrate with the crowd while The Beverly Brothers look on in disgust.

Rating: C-

Rick “The Model” Martel Vs. Jim Duggan

Rick 'The Model' Martel defeated Jim Duggan in 7:57 by submission with a Boston Crab.

Rating: C+

Notes: I was hoping for just a little better rating in this one, but it’s not bad enough to get my hopes down just yet.

We go backstage next where Shawn Michaels says tonight he’s going to show the world that Bret Hart is a hack and The Boy Toy will be the talk of the world.

Rating: C+

Million Dollar Man Vs. Big Bossman

Million Dollar Man defeated Big Bossman in 12:36 by submission with a Million Dollar Dream.

Rating: C

Notes: Bad chemistry hurt this match, and now may just be time to push the panic button. With only a few matches left if we can’t pull off some amazing ratings the rumble with be a bust and Vince…well I may be hearing from him sooner than later.

Bret Hart is with Gene Okerlund next and says Shawn Michaels can say whatever he wants. Tonight the world will know that Michaels is all talk and Bret Hart is still the excellence in execution.

Rating: B

Intercontinental Title Match:

Bret Hart Vs. Shawn Michaels

Shawn Michaels drew with Bret Hart in 22:55 following a double count out.

Rating: A

Notes: This was everything I hoped it would be. Bret and Shawn put on an amazing show that ended after they assaulted each other on the outside and were both just to exhausted to make it back into the ring. You can bet this feud is far from over.

Ric Flair Vs. The Ultimate Warrior

The Ultimate Warrior defeated Ric Flair in 8:05 by pinfall after using a foreign object.

Rating: A

Notes: Another match that was great, but was ruined for me thanks to creative control. Politics may just be the death of the WWF before it’s all said and done. The ending of the match came when Flair tried to hit Warrior with brass knuckles, but Warrior ducked it stole the knuckles and used them against Warrior.

Hogan is interviewed next saying that he will bring the title back to all the Hulkamaniacs who say their prayers and eat their vitamins.

Rating: A*

WWF Heavyweight Championship Match:

Hulk Hogan Vs. The Undertaker Vs. Sid Vicious

The Undertaker defeated Hulk Hogan and Sid Vicious in 13:26 when The Undertaker defeated Hulk Hogan by pinfall with a Tombstone after Paul Bearer interfered. The Undertaker won the WWF Heavyweight Title

Rating: B+

Notes: It took literally every negative booker note for Hogan and every positive one for Taker in order to get Hogan to drop this match. I’m sure I’ll hear about it tomorrow, but as for now The Undertaker is the new champion.

After the match The Undertaker celebrated his victory while the fans roared their disapproval. Could this be the beginning of a new era?

Rating: A*

Royal Rumble Match:

Final 10 participants: Big Boss Man, Bret Hart, Davey Boy Smith, Jake Roberts, Jim Duggan, Million Dollar Man, Randy Savage, Ric Flair, Road Warrior Animal and Sid Vicious

Randy Savage won a battle royal in 19:34. The final four competitors also included Ric Flair, Million Dollar Man and Bret Hart, with Ric Flair being the final elimination.

Rating: B+

Notes: Another great match that saw Savage get his shot at The Undertaker at Wrestlemania. That is as long as Hogan doesn’t have his way.

After the match Savage celebrated with the crowd ensuring everyone went home happy. Well everyone except for Hogan and Pat Patterson anyway.

Rating: A

Final Rating: B+

Notes: A pretty solid Royal Rumble I think. It started off a little slow, but the ending was perfect. The focus now is for Mania, who knows what will be in store for us until then.
