Secrets of the Ring Volume Three : Jillefski Takes Manhattan (NYCW 2013)

Recommended Posts

Good show. like the psycho explosion from Teddy Powell, he needs something extreme like that to stand out. Surprised Madman won over Gonzalez, never been able to get a lot of out Boone the few times I had him in games. And called the main event draw, which is always nice :D

( Alex DeColt is still a jackass though) :p

Thanks for the comment, D-Mack. The idea to do that with Powell just came out of the blue for me. I started trying to think of ways to make him stand out more, after a lifetime of being a second fiddle midcarder. The 'fedup and not taking this any more' attitude seemed perfect, especially considering it doesn't require much suspension of disbelief from the fans. I assume anyone in Powell's career situation could be close to snapping like that.

As far as the Madman victory over Gonzalez, my hand was sort of forced by the game and an idea I got while transferring some of the data over from '08 to '10. The next segment I post (either tonight or tomorrow sometime) will shed a bit more light on why the title change happened, but it will really come into more focus a couple of months down the road, story wise.

And coincidentally, Alex "The Jackass" DeColt will have a hand in the proceedings....and he will be living up to the nickname you have given him.

Can't believe I have missed this, just started reading and loving it so far. I can't wait to get up to get through the whole diary, good stuff!

Glad to have you onboard, BYU. I'm enjoying your NYCW offering as well.

-Talkin' NYCW #3-

“Surprise; we’re on TV.”

“Just like that, too.”

He snaps his fingers.

“Completely out of the blue….”

A smile.

“….and mysteriously after Mr. Stallings bought an interest in one of the biggest satellite cable companies in the US.”

“Go figure, huh?”

“That company had been trying to get me on board as an investor for a number of years, as I remember it. After I saw how the various companies under the XWA umbrella were operating, I figured it might be time to put some money into the cable thing and get some more coverage for the wrestling investment.”

“It made perfect sense so I did it.”

“Why not use all of your interests together, to help each other as much as possible?”

“The big question for us at the time was how we were going to do with a new Unified Champion. Keeping the same show pace with so much instability near the top of the card wasn’t going to be easy.”

“That’s why we put those belts on Madman Boone. We had planned to do it in two or three more months, after a bit more build up. But Gonzalez’s exit kind of forced our hand.”

He snuffs out a cigarette.

“But Campbell and Vibert had a plan.”

Jillefski pats his pocket. Is it really already time for another smoke?

“They always had a plan.”

“It was all coming together. Booking episodic television is what we had wanted to do; it’s what Phil and I were promised to have the opportunity to do.”

“And I think that we had a lot of things working in our favor, at that point, to make the television shows worth watching.”

“Doesn’t matter one f*cking bit that it was on some regional cable channel. It was out there; available to whoever wants to look for it.”

“Plus, it set things up booking wise like it’s supposed to be. Using TV to build up to the big shows; that’s the way it’s always been done, whether you’re talking about the big ‘Wrestleplex’ shows that they used to run in Texas or you’re talking about TCW, SWF, or USPW on pay-per-view, television programming was and will always be key in building up to the pay shows.”

“Losing Gonzalez, or rather phasing him out over the next few shows, wasn’t the huge blow it was made out to be by the sheets.”

“There was no doubt that Shawn was always a consummate professional who was just as good in the ring as he was in the locker room. But he was so constantly overworked going back and forth from New York to Vancouver and then back to Puerto Rico that it was bound to take its toll on him.”

“Basically, The Power told him that if he only had enough energy for one company, that it had better be Freedom Caribbean Wrestling. And Shawn knew that FCW was his home; where his best interests were.”

“Or at least that’s what we all thought at the time. That’s what everyone was lead to believe; what he told us.”

“I’m sure that we’ll get to that whole thing eventually, right? When did it start coming out? September? October?”

“Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later, in any case. I still get excited when someone brings it up; I just love talking about it. That whole situation; it was so…..interesting.”

He leans a bit more toward the camera, his cheeks red, flushed with excitement.

“I loved the Kudo spot at the end of the show, didn’t you?”

“Me and Campbell came up with that about a week before the show and Kudo was down with it. I knew how the match had to play out as soon as we signed it, and I’m sure that a lot of our fans did too.”

“There was no way in hell that belt was going back to Japan. And there was also no way in hell that Kudo was going to be sticking around New York long enough for us to put the belt on him and have him defend it. So a draw it was.”

“But someday down the road, he might be able to come back. And in that case, we’ve left things wide open for a return match. A huge return match.”

Vibert’s excitement is relentless. He tugs on the brim of his ballcap.

“What about James Brandon; how did you like that?”

“I’ll bet my house that nobody on the face of God’s green earth saw that one coming.”

“I thought, at the time, that this was one of those special stories that could be remembered as being better than a lot of the other muck on offer at the time.”

“I had no idea it would turn into what it did in a few week’s time, given the medium of TV to drive it.”

“The coolest thing about that was that he approached us about coming to NYCW, not the other way around. What a coup for us at the time, right? He was a much bigger name than anyone else we had then; he was on national television, a pay-per-view, only a couple of days before he showed up on our show.”

“Playing with the truth; with what the fans knew versus what they thought they knew. That’s always something I come back to, creatively: that concept.”

“And the James Brandon story gave me the best platform for fan manipulation the business had seen in years.”

“NYCW TV”

(July - Wk1)

-Preview-

It’s the debut of New York City Wrestling on USA Cable: Tri-State and no punches will be pulled, no expense spared; no stone will be left unturned in our attempt to provide the best professional wrestling program on television. So when NYCW TV hits the airwaves, do yourself a favor and hide the remote. You won’t need it for a solid sixty minutes.

The McWades vs. Team XDW

Three former backyarders, Blue, Aero, and Super Sonic take on the biggest bullies in the trailer park, Dean and Dallas McWade. On the heels of Dean and Dallas’ bloody attack on Sayeed Ali, one can only wonder how far behind the McWade’s the rest of the East Coast Assassins might be. Tables beware.

Jackpot Jordan/Ernie Turner vs. Ace Express

Reunions can be joyous affairs, whether they serve to remind you of a fonder time or give you the opportunity to finally realize long forgotten goals. Rick Sanders and Johnny Martin’s reunion as the Ace Express has elements of both the former and the latter. And when they re-debut on NYCW TV, facing Jackpot Jordan and his manager turned sometimes grappler Ernie Turner, Sanders and Martin will be put to the test. Can a blast from the past revitalize their professional futures or will it be a swan song that everybody seems to know the words to?

And in our Main Event…..

Madman Boone vs. Henry Lee

-NYCW Unified Title Match-

There have been some sick bastards that have passed through during the Tri-State area’s hardcore past. One of the most revered lunatics in all of that time makes his New York return in this week’s main event when “The Icon of Insanity” Henry Lee will step into the ring to face the NYCW Unified Champion Madman Boone. This match will not be for wrestling purists, that much is certain. What is uncertain is which of these two will survive the other’s penchant for violence. With the NYCW Unified Title on the line, the stakes are high. Who will walk away victorious? More so, who will be lucky enough to walk away intact?

Plus, Jefferson Stardust will be in action.

Don’t miss the debut of NYCW TV on USA Cable: Tri-State; there’s plenty of second rate wrestling on television, wouldn’t you like, for once, something that didn’t insult your intelligence as a fan?

We thought so.

The McWades suck a little less.

Jefferson Stardust vs. ?????

I'd go for the? but Jefferson is getting the god push

Jackpot Jordan/Ernie Turner vs. Ace Express

Could be's versus never was in tag teams

Madman Boone vs. Henry Lee - NYCW Unified Title Match

Psychoriffic battle but Lee isnt a headliner

Team XDW vs. The McWades

XDW are such jobbers, they probably job to jobbers. The McWades aren't jobbers, though.

Jefferson Stardust vs. ?????

I'm reading less "exciting mystery opponent" here than "we don't care about the other guy, we just want you to know Stardust is here".

Jackpot Jordan/Ernie Turner vs. Ace Express

Three words I don't trust: "manager/occasional wrestler". Two more: "Jackpot Jordan". Martin and Sanders are the two best guys in this match.

Madman Boone vs. Henry Lee - NYCW Unified Title Match

Too early to take the belt off Boone, especially without a real name on the other side.

Team XDW vs. The McWades

Even if Team XDW donned Sergeant Pepper Jackets they would still suck

Jefferson Stardust vs. ?????

Stardust is getting a bit of a god push but isn't the general rule that Quadruple Question Mark is usually even more dangerous than his compatriot Triple Question Mark ?

Jackpot Jordan/Ernie Turner vs. Ace Express

I don't think the veterans are quite ready to be put out to pasture just yet, so I say Ace Express score the win here.

Madman Boone vs. Henry Lee - NYCW Unified Title Match

Between these two hardcore hacks, you may as well keep the belt on Boone.

This made my afternoon, just so you guys know. I laughed out loud when I read the thread updates. Then I made the horrible mistake of trying to explain why it was funny to a friend I travel with. Ended up explaining the game, the C-Verse, and what 'diaries' are while he sat there smirking.

Raised my nerd rating by about thirty points, I'd guess. :D

Team XDW vs. The McWades

Team XDW are awesome at getting beaten up and the McWades love to beat people up so. . .

Jefferson Stardust vs. ?????

“Get on your feet, assh*les.” Quote of the diary.

Jackpot Jordan/Ernie Turner vs. Ace Express

Toss up as Jordan is something like on a roll.

Madman Boone vs. Henry Lee - NYCW Unified Title Match

Boone just won the title and Lee ain't quite as crazy as Boone.

Show #4 (NYCW July 2013 Wk 1 TV )

-Show Four-

“Live and on the Air"

(July Wk 1 TV)

The show opens with two uber hot co-eds grinding up against each other in a backstage locker room. One grabs a bucket of water and slowly pours it all over the other’s thin white t-shirt. In unison, they turn to the camera.

“Welcome to NYCW, the home of Jefferson Stardust.”

The camera pans back to show Jefferson Stardust himself, standing a couple of feet away, lecherously watching the girls with his hand on his chin before turning toward the lens.

“You know it is, bedwetters.”

The McWades vs. Team XDW

-Handicap Match-

Result: The McWades win via pinfall @ 3:09

Danny’s Notes: The three on two set up of this match would seem to favor the team represented by three guys, right? Not if you’re three former yardtards going head-up with two tough veteran hosses who’re all hopped up on cheap beer and fistfight adrenaline. With the opening clang of the bell still hanging in the air, the McWades toss a half set up table over the top rope that sends Aero, Blue, and Xavier scattering for safety. Once they are separated, Dean and Dallas begin to overwhelm them one at a time. First, Reckless gets crushed against the barricade by a running double boot that leaves him sitting (drooling) in an unattended attendant’s chair. Soon to follow is Aero who is cornered back in the ring and powerbombed through the half set-up table. Fearless Blue as a hard time living up to his nickname, however, as he is pinned against the ring by Dallas as Dean clears the stuff off of the ring announcer’s table. It is only seconds before Blue finds himself hurtling through the air and crashing down in an awesome explosion splinters. Ryan Holland, the referee in charge, looks around for a moment and seeing no movement from any of the Team XDW members, calls for the bell that ends the match.

Before the McWades’ music even hits........

...Shady K and Roach are in the ring, trading fists with the trailer park toughies all around the ringside area and back up the aisle, disappearing through the curtain moments later.

Grade: D-

(post): D+

Without warning (or even entrance music, for that matter) JD Morgan walks through the curtain and heads to the ring, microphone in hand. The reception is mixed and Morgan, while all decked out in his ‘Boogie Woogie Man’ get up, doesn’t seem to have the fun loving babyface attitude that has had in the past. Rather, he looks very serious and mildly upset.

JDM: “Look, I’m going to make this short and to the point.”

His tone is not drawing him favor from the fans and a few more boo-birds begin coming out.

JDM: “James Justice, the only way you could beat me is by sucker punching me, is it?”

No character; one-hundred percent Morgan.

JDM: “I am a pro wrestler; I work in wrestling matches, not fights. After what happened at “Visit From a Legend”, I have no respect for James Justice……”

They boo him again.

JDM: “…… and no respect for NYCW if people like Justice are what this place is about.”

He pauses, letting them get it out of their system. They don’t.

JDM: “I want a rematch for the XWA United States Title. That’s all. Give me a match and I’ll go away. Period.”

A few empty beer cups fly into the ring and the building starts sounding pretty hostile when…..

…….James Justice’s music fills the arena and he comes through the curtain.

JJ: “Morgan, all you’ve done since you’ve come to New York is lose, did you know that?”

The crowd cheers.

JJ: “You don’t deserve a shot at the XWA United States title……”

A few ‘DWN’ chants break out.

JJ: “But since Davey’s not here yet, I’d be more than happy to beat your ass again!”

Morgan shakes his head.

JJ: “What do you say?”

Morgan waves him off.

JDM: “I came back for a shot at the belt, nothing else. I can get in a fistfight with a washed up hippie anytime.”

The crowd boos him some more. Justice just throws his hands up, not believing Morgan’s avoiding his challenge.

JDM: “When your boy gets to the building, tell him I’m looking for him.”

Justice drops his microphone and starts running his mouth looking like he’s trying to goad Morgan into a fight, but it doesn’t work. JD just scowls at Justice and slowly goes back to the locker room area.

Jefferson Stardust vs. Paul Steadyfast

Result: Jefferson Stardust wins via pinfall @ 4:21

Danny’s Notes: We are treated to a pretty straight forward squash match courtesy of Jefferson Stardust, who handles the veteran Paul Steadyfast with relative ease. The finish comes at just past the four minute mark when Steadyfast eats a wicked short-arm clothesline before getting buried by Jefferson’s finisher, “The Idolizer” (pump handle slam).

Stardust raises his fist, celebrating his win for a couple of seconds as the bell rings before leaning over the top rope and waving toward the back, obviously beckoning someone out. The two girls from the show’s open push through the curtain to a loud ‘whoop’ from the horny male-dominated crowd.

But before they even get all the way through the silver reflective curtain…….

…….Teddy Powell splits them roughly and stomps toward the ring, talking a blue line of trash as he does so. Jefferson calls him a seven syllable name that our censors luckily catch before bolting from the ring as he did at “VFAL”, hurdling a crowd barrier and beating it through the booing fans.

JS: “Stardust talks a great game, but he doesn’t seem to be in too big a hurry to trade fists with Teddy Powell, does he?”

PV: “Well, from where I’m sitting, other than the night he jumped Stardust in the locker room, Powell hasn’t done much more than huff and puff either.”

The cameras quickly go backstage where Madman Boone is putting the finishing touches on an apparently epic beating of Doug Peak, who is laying in a pool of his own blood only a few feet from former tag team partner Henry Lee’s still unoccupied locker room.

With Peak barely twitching it looks like Boone’s business is finished and he begins to stomp away. But just as a road agent and a pair of paramedics get to the scene and begin trying to get Peak’s vitals, Madman lives up to his name and comes back, hopping onto Peak, grabbing two handfuls of his hair, and bashing his head into the floor over and over again until he is satisfied and Peak is motionless.

The medics are far too scared for themselves to get involved and are forced to stand by and watch until Boone finishes, finally grabbing his cane and stalking off down the hallway, ignoring them as if they weren’t even there and leaving Doug Peak clinging to life.

LB: “I haven’t seen him anywhere near the building all day, that’s a good sign.”

PV: “Maybe Tommy Cornell called him back home. Or maybe Dawn just needed to get down to the clinic for her monthly dose of penicillin……”

Bambino doesn’t miss a beat.

LB: “To ward off the crotch-rot?”

Jackpot Jordan/Ernie Turner vs. Ace Express

Result: Jackpot Jordan/Ernie Turner win via pinfall @ 5:21

Danny’s Notes: Not our most shining moment as a growing promotion, that much is certain. Sanders and Martin are a known quantity and seem to have most of their old moves (emphasis on old) in working order. Their opponents, however, had the appeal of a sidewalk turd on a hot day and really steamed the joint out, getting heckled by many of the ringside fans throughout.

In the end though, Jordan falls onto Johnny Martin and hooks his leg (when Ernie Turner nails Martin in the junk with his walking stick from the apron) as the elder member of the Express was taking Jackpot over with a “Twist on the Rocks” (slingshot suplex).

Taking the three count notwithstanding, the Ace Express look fairly good and soak in some very respectful rounds of applause from the crowd…..once the crowd had finished up booing the beejeezus out of Jordan and Turner during their own exit, that is. Just terrible.

There is barely a beat before DWN’s music hits and the young, good looking XWA United States Champion walks out and comes down the ramp. He is not in his ring gear, but rather a pair of jeans and an un-tucked collared dress shirt, and he is already in possession of a microphone.

DWN: “New York City, let me hear you!”

The place goes up; the biggest pop of the night.

DWN: “JD Morgan, you want to come back to my city, and challenge me for my belt while you talk trash about the NYCW and my friend out of the other side of your mouth?”

The fans boo the mention of their slight. They are still offended and DWN heaps it on, adjusting the US title on his shoulder.

DWN: “New York has the best wrestling fans in the world…….”

He can’t get any further as the building fills with cheers.

DWN: “……and I bet they’d love to see me whip your ass, one-on-one, JD. What do you say, NYC?”

The crowd cheers again and begins breaking out into scattered “Tri-ple Threat-Tri-ple Threat” chants.

DWN: “At “One More Time” in three weeks, I’m going to send you back to the Carolinas for good, ‘Boogie-Woogie Man’…..”

He pats the belt.

DWN: “…..but you’re not going to be taking this back with you. That’s where you’re wrong.”

It draws another pop.

DWN: “You’re going back empty handed.”

Madman Boone vs. Henry Lee

-NYCW Unified Title Match-

Result: Madman Boone wins via pinfall @ 8:45

Danny’s Notes: Madman’s matches are getting crazier all the time, but it’s his entrance that’s really getting the fans’ attention of late. It is now taking him nearly the duration of his theme music (the nearly six minute metal anthem “I’m a F*ckin’ Madman) to actually get to the ring, as he spends most of it stomping around the floor, caning himself in the forehead and souping himself up even further before stepping through the ropes.

Lee, himself, has a following of fans that still remember his stint in DAVE before he left for a long stretch in Japan, and they make themselves known when “The Icon of Insanity” is introduced.

From there it is basically a fistfight with a few kicks mixed in for good measure. In fact, I’m sure that many in attendance could’ve saved a few bucks by going down to their local watering hole and waiting for the ‘closing time fights’ to begin there instead. However, those that stuck it out with us got to see something pretty cool; something that you’d never see at the pub, no matter how good the fight.

After the obligatory brawl that went into every nook and cranny in the building, Boone, bleeding but controlling the run of play, levels Lee with a wicked right hand and lays him down on one of the rickety tables selling merch. Madman takes a second before finding the right spot and begins climbing…..up five feet……ten feet….fifteen feet……twenty feet onto a balcony ledge. He sticks his tongue out and yells before leaping out, doing an awkward backflip and landing squarely on Lee’s chest, blowing the table to bits amidst a huge cheer from the bloodthirsty New York fans.

Ryan Holland, who had been following the action since it left the ring, takes a look at the way the two motionless men are positioned before spotting Boone’s arm draped over Lee and dropping to his knees to count the three on the floor.

The bell begins ringing wildly as the cameraman gets a close up of the two men laying in a heap amongst the splinters and shards of table that are left; winner and loser looking equally in need of an ambulance.

PV: “Holy hell, that was an insane dive! Neither man has moved a muscle, Bambino!”

LB: “And we’re almost out of time this week, fans, on our USA Cable maiden voyage, we’ll leave you with……wait a minute. Apparently, the US Champion is backstage with James Justice…….”

When the cameras go backstage, James Justice is standing a few feet from Davis Wayne Newton shaking his head and sighing like a disapproving father.

JJ: “I just don’t get it, Davey. You don’t have to give Morgan a shot at the title just because he asked for one. I’m sure the ‘powers that be’ would have set you up with a defense before too long anyway.”

He steps into Davis a little bit. Uncomfortably close.

JJ: “He’s a tough customer, man. He could up and beat you, you know. Did you think of that? You should’ve just let me take care of him.”

Newton looks a bit embarrassed before snapping out of it and stepping back, defending himself.

DWN: “I’m going to be a fighting champion, James, I don’t duck anyone. Morgan, Kudo; even Tommy Cornell, if anyone wants a piece, I’ll give it to them.”

Justice sighs and almost manages to smirk at DWN’s bravado. Almost.

DWN: “Anybody, anyplace, anytime. Let ‘em step up.”

Justice just sighs again and throws his bag over his shoulder, turning his back on Newton and heading toward the exit.

JJ: “You’ve got a lot to learn about being a real professional, kid.”

Newton goes to say something back, but stops himself at the last second.

JJ: “A lot.”

Finally had a chance to read it, NN. Great work!

Glad you liked it Bigpapa. I think the three large events before were just really setting the table for me to be able to get into a routine of writing the TV shows leading up to an event. I really like that cycle, rather than having to have month to month supershows with no downtime.

But I think there will be more impact, storywise, when "One More Time" (NYCW's next event) rolls around than there will have been with any of the first three shows.

I know you book SWF and TCW that way, Papa, do you find it to be the "right" way, so to speak? Medium shows leading up to big shows? I don't see how a promotion could ever think of sustaining momentum without pulling back and reloading at some point.

Welcome back , No Neck! clap, clap, clap-clap-clap! Welcome back , No Neck! clap, clap, clap-clap-clap! Welcome back , No Neck! clap, clap, clap-clap-clap! Welcome back , No Neck! clap, clap, clap-clap-clap! Welcome back , No Neck! clap, clap, clap-clap-clap! Welcome back , No Neck! clap, clap, clap-clap-clap!

Psst. . .welcome back!

A chant makes me feel more than welcome. Thanks Critical-23. :)

I'm going to start posting the shows on Friday, I think, the in-between show's stuff on Monday and the next show's preview on Tuesday, just to let everyone know. Regularity is good. ;)

I don't know that its "right", in that there is no other way to do it. I do think it makes the most sense, and even a lot of promotions that do monthly shows use an approach of buliding things up through mid sized shows (for them) leading up to a bigger show. But I definitely find it easiest to write. When I first started Gen-S, I don't think I used TV to build toward the PPVs enough and the PPV ended up feeling like just another show. The reality, however, is that PPV is really the lifeblood of a promotion and TV should be used to sell viewers on buying that PPV. The cycle of TV leading to PPV gives you more of a chance to reload things and build things up.
