The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) is a governing body for a group of independent professional wrestling promotions and sanctions various NWA championships in the United States. The NWA has been in operation since 1948. Prior to the 1980s, it acted as the sole governing body for most of professional wrestling, operating as a talent and brand name franchiser for the inter-regional "territory" system.

1940s

Before the NWA was founded in 1948, there existed many regional professional wrestling promotions across North America (each promoting its own "World" champion). None of them, however, had backing or recognition outside of their own respective geographic base-areas. The concept of the NWA was to consolidate the championships of these regional companies into one true world championship of pro wrestling, whose holder would be recognized worldwide.[1] In 1948, Paul "Pinkie" George, a promoter from the Midwest, founded the original version of the National Wrestling Alliance with the backing of five other promoters (Al Haft, Tony Strecher, Harry Light, Orville Brown, and Sam Muchnick). This newly-formed NWA Board of Directors wanted Brown to be the first-ever NWA World champion. During the reign of the second NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Lou Thesz (1949–1956), the title was further unified with several more previously-competing "World" titles, such as those recognized jointly by the National Wrestling Association and the American Wrestling Alliance (in Boston), plus another version promoted from the Los Angeles Olympic Auditorium. This legitimized the NWA's claim that its title was a "Unified World Title," and its lineage continues to this day.

The NWA members divided up North America, as well as Japan, into territories that each promoter would "own" and operate in. Having a territory meant that no other NWA member could promote wrestling in that area unless special arrangments were made between the promoters involved. If non-NWA promoters tried to promote their show in an NWA territory, then the other member groups were obliged to send stars to help force the intruder out. Reportedly, threats of violence or physical retaliation were used against any promoters (and/or talent) who disregarded the territory system. If any member territory broke the NWA's rules, it faced expulsion, and thus risked missing out on having nationally-known wrestlers appear on their local shows. For most promoters under the NWA umbrella, the benefits of membership were well worth the dues. Usually, the NWA President's territory was the main territory of the entire alliance.

Beyond the benefit of having other promotions to draw on in case of an intruder, each territory also received periodic guest visits from the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. The champion did not have a "home territory" as such, but instead traveled from territory to territory, defending the title against the top stars of each territory. A number of former NWA World Champions often remarked that their primary goal was to make the top stars of each territory "look good" and give crowds the impression that those "local heroes" had the potential of being the champion by almost winning the title. Many promoters would build up to the appearance of "The NWA World Heavyweight Champion" weeks or months in advance, making the local World title matches that much more special, and the shows they headlined more lucrative. In addition, each NWA member promotion usually produced a TV show that aired in their territory only, meaning that the local fans only saw the World champion when he came to their area, not year-round. It was not just the champion that would travel the territories; often, wrestlers from a different area would come into a territory (often the heels / "bad guys"), and run an angle or two with its top local faces ("good guys"). Also, if the local fans ever tired of a wrestler, he could go to a whole new area and perform the same act for new audiences, who would think the act was brand-new.

1950s–1960s

Upon becoming the booker for Lou Thesz in 1950, Muchnick, who was the head of the St. Louis Wrestling Club, became the new NWA President and maintained that position until 1960.

In the mid-1950s, serious disputes broke out within the NWA. There were antitrust problems with the government and there were a number of competing factions who wanted to replace Thesz as champion with different wrestlers such as Verne Gagne. There were also disputes over the number of dates wrestled by the champion in various parts of the country. The first break within the organization occurred in 1957 when Montreal promoter Eddie Quinn walked out of the August NWA meeting in St. Louis. Quinn had fallen out with Sam Muchnick over a number of issues. Quinn was a partner in the St. Louis territory and disagreed with how it was being run. Quinn was also angry that Muchnick had business dealings with rogue promoter (and Quinn rival) Jack Pfefer. At the time Quinn walked out, a wrestler of his named Edouard Carpentier was involved in an angle where he and Lou Thesz were both being presented around the NWA as champion. This occurred after Carpentier had a disputed win over Thesz on June 14, 1957, and some of the NWA promoters considered it a legitimate title change, while others did not.[2] The original idea was to build the idea of the "disputed" NWA title into a high profile rematch. When Quinn left the NWA, Muchnick announced that Carpentier had never been an official champion and had no claim on the title.

In 1957, the American Wrestling Association (AWA) broke away from the National Wrestling Alliance due to a dispute over the booking of the world champion.[2] Lou Thesz was scheduled to win back the championship, despite the popularity Pat O’Connor had attained after winning it in 1959 and successfully starting the television program Wrestling At The Chase.

Afterward, Quinn saw the financial possibilities in the Carpentier situation and began to negotiate with factions within the NWA. He offered to have Carpentier lose a title match to their prospective champion thus giving them if they decided to break away a legitimate claim on the world title. In 1958, it was arranged that Carpentier would drop his title to Gagne in Omaha. But at the same time, Quinn also arranged for Capentier to drop his title in Boston to Killer Kowalski which formed the basis for the AAC/Big Time Wrestling (Boston) title which lasted until 1975. Gagne tried for two more years to work things out with the NWA but finally in 1960 left the organization forming the American Wrestling Association. Gagne's win over Carpentier was used to legitimize the world championship status of the AWA title.

In 1959, Quinn began negotiating with the Los Angeles NWA affiliate. The promotion recognized Carpentier as NWA champion in 1959. In June 1961, Carpentier dropped the title for a third time to Fred Blassie. The promotion then left the NWA officially and became the World Wrestling Association (WWA) until it returned to the NWA in 1968.

Muchnick's replacement at the NWA's helm in 1960 was Toronto's Frank Tunney; he in turn was succeeded by Fred Kohler, who was the main booker for the new NWA World champion, "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers. October 1962 saw Rogers defeat Kowalski, a match which was promoted by Doc Karl Sarpolis, the NWA member promoter in Amarillo, Texas. As a result, Sarpolis rose to the NWA presidency. In 1962, the NWA World Heavyweight Champion was, again, Rogers. Vincent J. McMahon began planning to take Rogers away from the NWA to start a new promotion. The NWA, however, stripped Rogers of the NWA title in Toronto in 1963. After the loss, McMahon withdrew from the NWA and created the World Wide Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) with Rogers as the star performer. The WWWF recognized Rogers as its first World champion in April 1963.[3] The promotion claimed that Buddy Rogers won a title tournament in Rio De Janeiro, a tournament that did not in fact exist. Although both Verne Gagne and McMahon promoted their own World champions, their promotions continued to have representatives on the NWA Board of Directors and regularly exchanged talent with NWA promotions.

Decline of the territory system

In the 1980s, video tape trading and cable television paved the way for the eventual death of the NWA's inter-regional business model, as fans could now see for themselves the plot holes and inconsistencies between the different regional storylines. Also, the presence of stars like Ric Flair on TV every week made their special appearances in each region less of a draw. Vince K. McMahon, who had bought the WWWF from his father and renamed it the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1982, used these gathering trends, as well as raids of competing promoters' talent pools, to turn his Northeastern territory into the first truly national promotion. To compete against this threat, various NWA promoters, along with the AWA, attempted to co-promote shows under the Pro Wrestling USA banner. Internal disputes over power and money, however, caused this deal to eventually fall apart. The AWA ended up owning the group's ESPN timeslot, and used it to broadcast its own weekly shows

Live from The Bob Carpenter Center: Attendence 5,000 (SELLOUT!!)

Dark Match: Jimmy Valiant and Bugsy McGraw vs. The Assassins:

Valiant and McGraw worked pretty good together in this match. The fan favorites Valiant and McGraw added some comedy spots, with some school boys and McGraw spanked Assassin 1. However, the more pwerful Assassins were able to prevail after Assassin 2 connected with a Full Nelson Suplex, for the win.

Dark Match: Nikita Koloff vs. The Great Kabuki

The crowd was a bit confused, with two heels wrestling, they didn't know who to cheer for. But, for the most part, the crowd was behind Koloff. Koloff was able to duck a mist shot from Kabuki, and connect with a Russian Sickle for the win.

The NWA Tag Champs Speak:

Slaughter: ATTENT.......HUT!!!!! Listen up, you maggotts!!! Brisco Brothers, tonight it's going to be a war when you get in the ring with Sgt. Slaughter and Don Kernodle. Just like President Reagen is unsuceesfully trying to stop the spread of the Communist takeover, you little pukes will be unsucessful against us, the champs!!!!!

Kernodle: Jack and Jerry, you think you have the advantage becuase you punks grew up together, well let me tell ya, there is no bond stronger than that of soliders fighting alongside each other. And, that's what we are, and we will not be beat!!!

Slaughter: And, that's an order!!!!

Non Title: NWA Tag Champions Sgt. Slaughter and Don Kernodle vs. The Brisco Brothers

This was a hard fought match, with all four men taking a beating. Jerry was getting beat on for the majority of the match, with some great double team wrestling by the champs. However, once Jerry made the hot tag to Jack, the Brisco's took control. The Brisco's were able to get the champions in the Figure Four Leg Locks, as the crowd cheered wildly. Once the ref broke up the double Figure Four's, and was escorting Jerry to the corner, Slaughter nailed Jack with the tag belt. Don Kernodle went to the top rope, and was going for his Flying Knee Drop, but Jack moved out of the way, and applied another Figure Four. The pain was too much for Kernodle, who submitted in agony.

Non Title: NWA US Heavyweight Champion Greg "The Hammer" Valentine vs. Ricky Steamboat

This was a chop fest, and when it was all over, both mens chest were blistering. There were a couple of near falls for both men. The crowd was hot for the majority of this match, as they both gave it their all. Steamboat was able to successfully avoid the Figure Four on multiple occasions. But, when Steamboat was about to apply the Double Arm Chicken Wing, Valentine slid out, and walked to the back with his championship held high. Steamboat was furious over the countout win.

The Champions Meet Face To Face

Ric Flair was backstage about to give an interview about his match with Harley Race, when Valentine walked by. Flair had some choice words for The Hammer, saying he wasn't a true champion because he walked out of a match and didn't give the fans their money's worth.

Valentine said he could care less about the fans money, and said he could beat Flair anyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Flair responded by saying, to be the man you've got to beat the man.

Valentine then challenged Flair to a match tommorow night on WTBS, which Flair accepted.

MAIN EVENT: Non Title: NWA Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair vs. Harley Race

Flair was able to get some early offense, but for the duration of the match Harley Race was in control. Both men brawled on the outside, where Flair was rammed into the steel turnbuckle and did a gruesome blade job. It was more of the same, once both men got back inside, as Race continued to pound away on Flair. Referee Tommy Young, took an inadvertent elbow from Flair and was knocked down towards the end of the match. Race went upstairs and connected with a Flying Headbutt, and covered Flair. But, since the ref was knocked out, there was no one to make the count. Race got up and woke Young up, but when he turned around, Flair rolled him up for a quick three count.

Controversy Over The Vacated Mid Atlantic Championship

Jim Crockett Jr. came down to the ring with the vacated Mid Atlantic Titles in hand, and grabbed a mic.

Crockett Jr: When my father created Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling, he did so with honor and diginity, and those are the two staples he insisted that I run this company with. Honor and Diginity. Now, we have a problem, because our compnay's premier title, this Mid Atlantic Championship, is vacant. Now, I know we could have a tournament to crown the new champion, but I don't want to do that. I want the MACW to be represented with someone who has honor and diginty. So, with that in mind, I would like to award this championship to Ricky Steamboat!!!!

Steamboat come down to the ring, and hugs Crockett. Steamboat grabs the title, and begins to hold up the title, when Sgt. Slaughter comes down to the ring.

Slaughter: Honor and diginity!?!?!? No one has more honor and diginty than me, Little Jimmy!!!! I am a former marine drill sergeant AND I am one half of the NWA Tag Team Champions!!! I am a proven champion!!! Steamboat is nothing more than a worthless puke, that should've been nuked along with Hiroshima!!!!!

Slaughter and Steamboat get face to face, and are about to trade blows when Roddy Piper comes out from the back.

Piper: Well, we seem to have a little bitty problem here, James. You see, I think I should be the champion, not these two bumbling idiots!!! No offense, Steamboat....And, Slaughter you are a bumbling idiot, but damn you also have a huge chin......Jeez, you got get a small army into formation on that thing!!!

Crockett Jr: Let's see, we have three guys who are deserving to be champions. It looks like I have some thinking to do.

Piper: That's where I come in James...

Piper whispers something to Jim Crockett Jr., who smiles in agreement.

Crockett: That's perfect. Tonight, we will have an elimination type match!!! It will be Ricky Steamboat taking on Sgt. Slaughter taking on Roddy Piper!!! Whoever gets pinned first will be eliminated. The person that gets the pinfall will get to pick what type of match he will have against the other person next week!!! And, that match will be for the Mid Atlantic Championship!!!!

Piper: You see, just when you think you got the answers, I go and change the question!!!! See you boys in the ring!!!!

Jack Brisco vs. "Handsome Harley Race

Greg Valentine Promo

Valentine: Ric Flair, in just a few mintues the world will come to find out, what I already know. You are a fraud. Flair, tonight, I expose you for the phony that you really are. Ric Flair had the amazing comeback from an airplane crash that broke his back and nearly killed him. The world hailed him as a true warrior. But, Flair, so soon you forget that my father was also on that plane, and I have heard all his stories. Ladies and gentlemen, while that plane was going down, and the real men on that plane, like my father, were bracing themselves for the inevitable, you Ric Flair were in the corner balling your eyes out. Flair, you were cracking up under the pressure, and if wasn't for my father putting you back in your seat, you would be dead. Flair, you cracked under pressure, and just like tonight, you will crack under pressure. Only this time, my father won't be there to console a punk little kid.

Triple Threat: Roddy Piper vs. Sgt. Slaughter vs. Ricky Steamboat

Remember, the person who gets the pinfall gets to pick the stipulation in the match against the person who didn't get pinned, and that match will be for the Mid Atlantic Title. This was a quick 8 minute match, that saw alot of near falls. But the pins would get broken up by the odd man out, because everyone involved knew the importance of getting the pinfall in this match. After a grueling eight minutes of nonstop action, Sgt. Slaughter had Piper in the Camel Clutch. Ricky Steamboat, however, didn't pull Slaughter off of Piper. Instead, he climbed the turnbuckle and connected with a Flying Body Press on Slaughter for the win. So, the Mid Atlantic Title Match will be Ricky Steamboat vs. Roddy Piper, and Steamboat gets to pick the stipulation.

MAIN EVENT: NON TITLE: NWA Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair vs. NWA US Heavyweight Champion Greg Valentine

This match didn't live up to it's expectations. It was a good match, but just wasn't great. With both men claiming to be the masters of The Figure Four Leglock, both men targeted the legs early on. Both men were able to apply their finishers, but the other man would always get to the ropes to break up the submission. In the end, however, Valentine went for another attempt at the Figure Four, but Flair rolled him up for the pin.

Garvin: Let me tell you something, Georgeous Jimmy Garvin has tackled some tough competition in the past. I have brought Dusty Rhodes to his knees, I have gone the limit with Ric Flair, and tonight I will become the new American Champion when I beat that pimple face punk Kevin Von Erich.

Mercer: Well, I think Kevin might have something to say about that.

Garvin: Listen old man, I'm not afraid of no man. I am the most georgeous wrestler in history, and my wrestling skills are unmatched. Tonight I shatter all the dreams of these little punk kids when I destroy Kevin, and there isn't a damn thin the Von Erich's can do about it!!!

Kerry had Kabuki stunned, and was calling for the Iron Claw, but Gary Hart got up on the apron to distract Kerry. Kerry went over to Jart, and put the Claw on Hart, to the amusement of those in attendence. The Great Kabuki tried to blindside Kerry, but walked into a Tornado Punch. MAIN EVENT:WCCW AMERICAN HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP: Kevin Von Erich © vs. "Georgeous" Jimmy Garvin w/ Sunshine

Garvin's personal valet, Sunshine, sprays the ring ropes down before her man will enter. Garvin gets in the ring, and asks Sunshine to spray him down. Kevin Von Erich makes his way down, and the crowd erupts.

The started off with the acrobatic in control, with a dazzling array of dropkick and flying head scissors. Then both men went into a series of chain mat wrestling, but Kevin was clearly in control. However, Kevin made the mistake of letting up, and allowed Garvin to rake his eyes. This allowed Garvin to take control.

Garvin connected with the Brainbuster DDT, and everyone thought the match was over. However, Kevin kicked out at the last second. Jimmy Garvin began kicking all the ropes in frustration. Sunshine jumped up on the apron and began arguing with the ref. As she was doing this, she slid Garvin her perfume bottle.

As Garvin turned around, Kevin locked in The Iron Claw. But, since Garvin had the perfume bottle, he was able to spray the perfume in Kevin's eyes and get the pin.
