Easy Riders w/ Carl Batch vs. Team VIPER

A short and brutal contest to open the score, but all four men get to dish out a fair amount of punishment. Ota becomes Team VIPER's ace in the hole, having the speed and agility that the Riders cannot match, while Miyazaki goes toe to toe with them.

A Ninja Strike even gets Hopper down, but Fonda prevents them from capitalising, pulling Ota off the cover and into a loose, careless suplex. Hopper promptly responds by setting him up, the Riders scoring with the Emergency Stop before a big boot cuts Miyazaki off.

Hell Monkey

Speed and skill are very much in evidence here. Acid finds himself utterly dominant in the early going, wiping the floor with Fortune, duelling briefly with Harry Allen, even scoring an Acid Rain Bomb on Edd Stone after Edd wipes out Hell Monkey with a flying legdrop.

Then Art Reed catches him in the back of the head with a running boot. These two's rivalry started something like five years ago, and Azaria sells every month of it on commentary, referring back in particular to Reed's issues with Acid and the School of Tradition that have reoccurred from time to time

Hell Monkey comes into the ring with the ladder, and Edd Stone leaps onto it, scrambling up it before it's fully set up. Monkey promptly lets go, sending Edd crashing down into Harry Allen. The Monkey picks the ladder back up, setting it up, and Acid ducks Reed's dropkick, moving in to low blow the Monkey.

Reed cuts Acid off for a second and Chance Fortune scrambles up the ladder. Seeing this, Acid catches Reed with a legsweep and springs onto the ladder, essentially hiptossing Fortune off the ladder. Fortune lands on the mat and rolls out of the ring entirely from the impact.

Reed scrambles up the ladder after Acid; the two trade blows at the top for a few moments before Harry Allen leaps onto the ladder from the side, managing to work his way up with his feet wedged in either side. Once he's close enough to the top, he flips forward and over it, catching both Acid and Reed in a double Gunslinger's Revenge cutter.

Edd Stone senses a chance, but sees Hell Monkey recovering. Rather than go straight up the ladder, he takes a moment to measure him, going for the Edd-Renaline Shot, but the Monkey ducks it – HELL FIRE KICK!

Acid flies back in to hit a slingshot inverted DDT and, once again, goes for the ladder.

Reed scrambles up after him, but this time he's got plans, grabbing Acid by the legs. He works him round and down into a Boston Crab braced against the top of the ladder.

Chance Fortune stands for a moment, looking at the situation. He climbs the turnbuckle and launches himself from it, sailing into a crisp dropkick that catches the trapped Acid's head against the ladder itself.

Hell Monkey, on the other hand, runs up the ladder – runs up Art Reed – and grabs the contract before crashing to the mat.

The camera goes backstage as we come back from commercial, catching Eric Tyler, Laura Huggins, and Sean Deeley in shot.

“OK,” Eric asks gently. “What's the deal here, exactly?”

Sean shakes his head. “Eric, you know I had reservations about the way the School does things-”

“She doesn't,” he interrupts, jerking his head toward Laura, who smiles slightly and nods.

“Yeah,” Sean says heavily. “She doesn't, and I guess I'm kind of working on that. But... I'm still under contract with her, and even if I wasn't, I have no intention of just leaving her behind.” The two youngsters smile happily at each other.

“But I'm done with the School, Eric. I know you always said we had to stick together. That anyone who tried to make you play favourites didn't get it, and was going to get kicked out – so I'm saving you the hassle.

“I can't sit around in the same gang as Freddy any longer, Eric. I just can't. Don't ask me to.”

Eric Tyler looks at him for a long time. “For Laura's sake,” he says in the end, “this isn't something I'm going to follow up on, Sean – unless I have to. You remember who brought you in here. You remember who taught you respect.”

Joel Bryant w/ Laura Huggins vs. Rocky Golden

Quite the contest here; Golden has the power, Bryant has the skills – but they're far from enough.

Golden spends most of the contest showboating, really, chatting with the fans at ringside, enjoying himself, and keeping Bryant down. There's no real question who's gonna win this one, and Golden has a lot of fun with it. Once again, the execution of a duck and roll to unsight the referee follows the Rocky Road to secure the pinfall, and Golden promptly plays to the crowd, who love him for it.

Frankie Perez & Remo Richardson w/ Phil Vibert

Sheer brutality here, but the Balcony Express fight as gallantly as they ever have, while Perez and Remo treat this as an opportunity to test their teamwork. Eventually Perez launches himself from the top turnbuckle to hit a side kick onto Marv Statler while Remo hoists him on his shoulders; a Destroyer to Dean Waldorf later, Remo pins Statler.

Jack Bruce's music plays once again, and he walks down to the ring, collaring Randall as he consoles his students.

The two hug, but Hopkirk looks wary. Bruce and Hopkirk talk in low tones, the cameras catching very little of it – until it gets louder and louder.

“- pretenders, Randy, why are you-”

“- good kids and they've got heart-”

“You and me are the only ones left! This whole thing is a farce! The new kid doesn't care about music, man, he doesn't give two ****s about the band, he -”

“Hey! Troy was what kept the band from dying when you left, man-”

Their argument continues as the show goes to commercial.

Johnny Bloodstone w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. Merle O'Curle

More excellent mat based competition catches the crowd's fancy. Bloodstone and O'Curle have a way of working together that makes O'Curle look like a star even when few people really have much interest in him – yet – and that helps to evelate Merle a little more.

O'Curle almost has the match won on one occasion, and counters out of the Bloodstone Mutilation twice – he's clearly starting to get the measure of his opponent, and the two men seem almost to be enjoying themselves, but Bloodstone still clamps it down, hitting, of all things, an Edd-Renaline shot to set up the final Bloodstone Mutilation and pick up the win.

Back to the back, and Kate Dangerous has just caught up with Aaron Andrews. “Look,” she begins, “I know you've got no reason to know me and not much of a one to care. But I also know it's been a while since you were on Pay Per View.

“I've got myself in a situation where I really need a partner who can handle himself, and-”

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/TommyCornell_alt5.jpg

“Aaron's not your man, honey,” comes another voice, and Tommy Cornell strides cheerfully, confidently into view, habitual smirk firmly in place. “He's occupied this Sunday.”

“I am?” Andrews asks.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/WolfHawkins_alt3.jpg

“Told you he was smart,” he says. Wolf Hawkins, over his shoulder, glowers at Andrews. Cornell continues blithely. “Aaron, I figure you deserve one last test, one last check. And at Psycho Circus, I'm offering you that one last challenge – and Pay Per View money. Worldwide exposure.

“Actually, no. I'm offering you nothing. I'm telling you – this is what you're doing on Sunday.”

Aaron looks across at Dangerous and shrugs in partial apology. “Nothin' personal,” Cornell tells her cheerfully. “Hope you find someone.”

The camera follows them away a little, then turns back to Kate Dangerous, sat with her back to the wall, rolling her eyes at what's just happened.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/RockyGolden_PS2.jpg

“Hey,” comes a familiar voice. “Need a hand?” The camera flashes up to capture Rocky Golden's amused expression.

John Anderson & Rick Law vs. Tyson Baine & Wolf Hawkins

What a brawl – and brawl is what this is from the bell onward. This, of course, plays right into Tyson Baine's hands, and he's a monster throughout, flattening both his opponents on numerous occasions.

At one point Baine's hand wraps around Anderson's neck, cutting off what had previously been quite a promising comeback; he then simply shoves Anderson backward, crashing him into Sam Sparrow.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/JungleJack_FIN4.jpghttp://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/JulianWatson_FIN.jpghttp://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/BrentHill.jpg

With Sparrow down, the Enforcers hit the ring, followed swiftly by Brent Hill. At this point, all hell has effectively broken loose, and the match proceeds to be a beatdown until Sparrow shows signs of reviving – at which point a Hades Bomb to John Anderson finishes it.

Sunday December 28th 2008

I'm writing my PPV thoughts early; I don't expect to be in a position to think much after Psycho Circus has wrapped. The tradition started, I'm told, just after Rip Chord left the company – Liberty, who nowadays wrestles as James Justice, is the man behind it – but it's a rare TCW employee who doesn't catch the morning flight out on the first of January each year in the company of two Alka-Seltzer.

There are worse traditions.

Of all the reactions we've had to Tommy building a new, privately-owned wrestling arena, perhaps the strongest has come from the NYC hotel we use whenever we're passing through New York; it's used to getting a fair amount of our business at each pay-per-view, and as it becomes clear that Psycho Circus, the afterparty of which is also a New Year's Eve blowout – wrestlers' families are much more likely to be flown in for Psycho Circus than even Malice In Wonderland, the nominal biggest event in our calendar – as, I say, it becomes clear that Psycho Circus will probably become exclusive to the Jennifer Cornell Coliseum half the country away, they're a little upset.

The hotel in question has three bars. TCW usually end up being given the run of two of them, and by the end of the night, both are likely to be dry. Tomorrow's house show, by tradition, focuses on comedy matches, something light as the crew as a whole recover.

Tommy, of course, doesn't drink himself, but if Psycho Circus is successful, he'll be high enough anyway, and he'll be in the bar at least as long as the rest of us for the party if nothing else.

So what do I have to say about the show itself? My fingers are mostly crossed about the intergender tag – it should be fine, but Rocky's underperforming a little. On the other hand, if anyone can carry him, it's the combo of Chris and Kate in the same ring. It's all lead in, anyway – after this, my contact with the women's division booking becomes pretty minimal.

It's been a hell of a year for me. The Philly Pro retrospectives gave me a new lease of life with the fans and Tommy's offer has given me something to do. TCW now has a solid tag team division; next year, we finish establishing the women's division and look at building the All Action division into something to respect.

Also, the Syndicate program will come to a close, a hair under two years after its creation. I don't tend to believe you can sustain a top-flight faction for much longer than that without making everyone else look weak.

So far, I'm excited about what comes afterward, which is usually a good sign.

[OOC: This will be the last show run under TEW2008.]

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/PPV%20Logos/thPsychoCircus.jpg

New Years Eve is almost upon us, and as always, Psycho Circus will be airing a couple hours earlier than our other PPVs to make sure you have plenty of time to make it to the party - because believe me, you won't want to miss what's coming first!

The very first match of the show features Tommy Cornell in action against the talented young competitor Aaron Andrews, who Cornell appears to be scouting for a place in the Syndicate, going far enough as to antagonise Wolf Hawkins as he does it. Cornell has promised that this is the last evaluation match for Andrews - so who will be victorious, and what will happen with Andrews and the Syndicate afterward?

Following that contest, the All Action Championship will be on the line. We still can't quite believe the move that won Hell Monkey his shot, but these two Japanese-influenced warriors are sure to live up to the championship's name. Frankie Perez's new alignment with Phil Vibert may yet come into play here; we'll have to see.

And, next, a no-disqualification contest between Rick Law and Tyson Baine. Cornell has promised Law that the Syndicate will not interfere. Will that give Law the leeway he needs against the monster? Or can Baine prevail on his own brute power alone?

Quite the grudge match will follow; Freddy Huggins demanded a chance to face Sean Deeley. Over the past several months, we've seen Huggins' sister fall for Deeley, and it's clear that Freddy resents the preferential treatment he sees that as having bought Deeley. Looking to close out the year with a clean slate, Huggins wants to settle the score...

The second intergender tag match in TCW history will follow. Chris Rockwell and protege Lauren Easter lock horns with the unlikely alliance of Kate Dangerous and Rocky Golden, in what we expect to be an intense match. Dangerous has pledged to change the minds of anyone who feels women can't wrestle during this contest.

Following that, the second Hard-Hitting Championship title match between Sam Keith and Sammy Bach. Bach's tactics to get the better of Keith between matches are, of course, not sanctioned in the No Holds Barred flavour of match - but any wrestling hold, throw, or strike not using weaponry is, of course, legal. We believe that this gives Keith a slight edge, though Bach's unpredictable, intense style may stand him in good stead.

Remo Richardson defeated Ricky Dale Johnson last month with help from Phil Vibert. This month, the two lock horns again. We've received word that the steel cage is being shipped to the Greenwalt Dome, but we haven't heard what match it's for - our best bet is either this contest or the main event.

Hardcore action will follow, as the New Wave once again meet the Easy Riders with the tag titles on the line - and with the Wave's history in DaVE and the Rider's chair-swinging style, it's anyone's guess who the hardcore stipulation actually favours.

The International Championship will be on afterward. Wolf Hawkins is the challenger, and he's once again facing off with the former Syndicate man John Anderson. These two have never failed to deliver, and the passion they both hold for that belt means this will be no exception.

And, of course, there's the main event. The winner of this match goes on to the main event at Malice in Wonderland - goes on to headline the biggest show of TCW's year - to face Johnny Bloodstone in a title unification match. And the men who have that chance? Bloodstone's own tutor, the Canadian Wrestling Machine Jeremy Stone. The reigning Triple Threat Champion, Troy Tornado. And the Bloody-Handed God, Eddie Peak. You do NOT want to miss out.

Excellent I'm back in time to predict on this :)

Aaron Andrews vs. Tommy Cornell

Andrews will put in a plucky performance but I don't see him going over Cornell.

TCW All Action Championship

Frankie Perez © w/ Phil Vibert vs. Hell Monkey

Unless Perez is going up a division already, I don't see him dropping this belt yet to anyone.

NO DISQUALIFICATION

Rick Law vs. Tyson Baine

Law gets the win in this one, Baine's role these days is to look menacing but lose the big matches.

Freddy Huggins vs. Sean Deeley w/ Laura Huggins

Deeley seems ready more for a push, but there is the nagging doubt that perhaps Laura turns on Deeley to help her brother win.

Chris Rockwell & Lauren Easter vs. Kate Dangerous & Rocky Golden

Dangerous does not get her revenge yet and I can possibly see Golden playing a role in helping Rockwell and Easter to pull out the win, he just doesn't appear to be all that trustworthy.

TCW Hard Hitting Championship

Sam Keith © w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. Sammy Bach

I have the same feelings that Regis has, that Keith could well hold this belt until he decides to hang them up.

It's not time to put RDJ out to pasture, but Remo has to win this to truly establish himself as a threat in TCW, and a win over a TCW 'icon' will do just that.

TCW Tag Team Championship

HARDCORE

The New Wave © vs. Easy Riders w/ Carl Batch

The stip does appear to favour the Easy Riders, but are people forgetting that the New Wave were once in DaVE, just get the feeling that the New Wave beat the Fat Bikers at their 'own game'.

TCW International Championship

John Anderson © vs. Wolf Hawkins

Though Hawkins winning this belt doesn't really see him move forward, Anderson has had a decent run with the belt and I see at least one title changing hands on this show.

TCW World Heavyweight Championship

Troy Tornado © vs. Eddie Peak vs. Jeremy Stone

Tornado holds onto the title, there is always the possibility Jack Bruce gets involved but him costing Tornado the belt would actually be too predictable.

Aaron Andrews vs. Tommy Cornell

- Cornell Control, but AA looks dangerous.

TCW All Action Championship

Frankie Perez © w/ Phil Vibert vs. Hell Monkey

- Vibert makes the difference here.

NO DISQUALIFICATION

Rick Law vs. Tyson Baine

- This ain't BoH, so Baines brutalizes the Lawman.

Freddy Huggins vs. Sean Deeley w/ Laura Huggins

- Pure wishful thinking here. As I want Huggins to win, not that I think he will.

Chris Rockwell & Lauren Easter vs. Kate Dangerous & Rocky Golden

- Uppernut to the Rockwell's rocks... or to Lauren's Easter basket.

TCW Hard Hitting Championship

NO HOLDS BARRED

Sam Keith © w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. Sammy Bach

- I just think Bach is a worthy successor to Keith and continues to make a good case for his upward mobility. Plus his character rocks hard.

Remo Richardson w/ Phil Vibert vs. Ricky Dale Johnson

- Remo's on a roll towards something big, RDJ can afford to lose to focus on the women's division. The dirty, lucky man.

TCW Tag Team Championship

HARDCORE

The New Wave © vs. Easy Riders w/ Carl Batch

- There is no point in voting against the New Wave, even with this stacked in the Riders favour.

TCW International Championship

John Anderson © vs. Wolf Hawkins

- Syndicate regain some gold - which proves himself to Cornell while managing to piss TC off at the same time.

TCW World Heavyweight Championship

Troy Tornado © vs. Eddie Peak vs. Jeremy Stone

- I'm not sure what the plan with Tornado is, but Peak is a welcome new challenger (who won't win) and while Stone could pick things up, I suspect Bruce shows up to angle for a frontman versus frontman match.

The traditional opening video for <em>Psycho Circus</em> chronicles the big moments of the year. The main foci are Sam Keith's year – the Syndicate, winning the Hard-Hitting Championship, his split with Cornell, alliance with his sons and the men he's helped to train – Troy Tornado's year – returning from injury to save Painful Procedure from assault, stepping up to challenge Tommy Cornell, winning the championship, becoming the Triple-Threat Champion – Johnny Bloodstone – from the Bombshell's mystery hype videos through his debut against Sammy Bach to his splitting the World Heavyweight Championship by making Tommy Cornell tap out – and Remo Richardson's unbeaten streak since his debut. Mixed in there are the title victories of Frankie Perez, Koshiro Ino, the New Wave and John Anderson, as well as Aaron Andrews' incredible performance against Cornell, Wolf Hawkins crushing Genghis Rahn's skull against the cage wall with a Full Moon Rising to send him out of TCW, Sean Deeley's meteoric rise and Chris Rockwell's descent into insanity.</p><p> </p><p>

Aaron Andrews vs. Tommy Cornell</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

As could be expected from their previous clashes, this match is a real doozy. Aaron seems particularly fired up by the fact the match is on PPV, and he takes the fight to Cornell from the off, landing a spinebuster inside the first minute and forcing a narrow kickout. </p><p> </p><p>

Cornell retaliates in fine style, but after their two previous bouts, it's becoming pretty clear that both men have the other scouted. For a while the match seems entirely equal, with one side or the other breaking through when they get lucky more than anything else. Aaron manages to block the Rough Ride, too, turning it into a whirlybird DDT that gets another two. The clothesline Cornell hits a moment later gets a long two of it's own, but both men break apart after that, circling cautiously. </p><p> </p><p>

There's one move, however, that one of these men has which hasn't been scouted. Andrews manages to stun Cornell in the fourteenth minute and scoops him up for the Game Breaker, but Cornell reacts the exact same way Wolf Hawkins had, raking his eyes and slipping clear at speed. The look on his face makes it clear what he expects from the Game Breaker. </p><p> </p><p>

Moments later, however, things go badly for Andrews. Cornell gets a suplex on him and Sam Sparrow is in the wrong place at the wrong time.</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>

<span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/WolfHawkins_alt3.jpg</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Wolf Hawkins slides into the ring with a chair, and Andrews drops from a brutal shot to the head. Cornell looks at his protege for a long moment, but as Sparrow recovers, he shakes his head and makes the cover.</p><p>

In the ring, Cornell stands and beckons Hawkins in. The two go close, and they're clearly arguing for some time, the gestures taking in the prone form of Aaron Andrews. After maybe a couple minutes of this, however, Tommy Cornell abruptly breaks off, staring at the entrance – where Sam Keith, hands on his hips, stands watching, with the same smirk on his lips he had when he first raised doubts in Wolf Hawkins' mind.</p><p> </p><p>

“Old habits die hard,” Dangerous muses. “He got me that way once, back in 1990. Spent the next six months second-guessing myself.”</p><p> </p><p>

Frankie Perez © w/ Phil Vibert vs. Hell Monkey</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

There's something about the way these two go face to face that suggests they're not confident of the end result, and the general clash casts a pall over the fight. Nonetheless, there's some good stuff here, with Perez concentrating on his submission skill as his big advantage against the speed, agility and power of Hell Monkey.</p><p> </p><p>

Perhaps the biggest moment of the match is Perez' foray into a high-speed assault of his own, handspringing off the ropes to deliver an enzuigiri. Or perhaps it's Hell Monkey hitting an electric chair drop from his position on the top turnbuckle. But the match actually ends a little more prosaically; Hell Monkey tries for the Tumbling Monkey, misses, and Frankie is on him immediately to apply the P-Clutch. Trapped in the center of the ring, Hell Monkey is forced to submit.</p><p>

The camera goes backstage, and behind Sam Keith and the Blonde Bombshell, Johnny Bloodstone and Art Reed are trying holds on each other, the Keith twins occasionally stepping in to make a suggestion; this usually prompts quiet discussion, and almost invariably Bloodstone's explanation appears to be final.</p><p> </p><p>

Sam Keith, meanwhile, smiles. “Behind me are four of the finest wrestlers I've ever helped to train,” he says. The Bombshell nods approval, and takes up the theme. “Surrounding me are five of the best wrestlers anywhere on this planet,” she says. “I'll happily put any of these men up against any other wrestler you care to name... But at the moment, the best of them is undisputable.</p><p> </p><p>

“He is in his prime.” Keith concedes this point with a rueful nod. “He has years of experience. And his World Heavyweight Championship marks him out as one of the best competitors in the world even without all of that.</p><p> </p><p>

“But right now, that championship is disputed. He and Troy Tornado have an equal right to it. Tornado's right is up for grabs this month, where Johnny's right was on the line last month. But at Malice in Wonderland – at the biggest event of the year – the dispute is over.” She nods. “At Malice in Wonderland, they have the chance to unify the belts. Whoever it is, though...” A grin. “Whoever steps into the ring with Johnny is going to learn that he really is...” She sighs happily, “...in <em>anything</em> he puts his mind to... the very, very best.”</p><p> </p><p>

Rick Law vs. Tyson Baine</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

There's something about the big monster and the heroic underdog when it's done well, and when these two are together, they snap into their roles perfectly. </p><p> </p><p>

Law comes out to the ring carrying the nightstick he's been relying on against Baine, who brings no weapons with him. He doesn't seem to feel he'll need them, and he may be right. </p><p> </p><p>

There's nothing pretty about this. There isn't much that's fancy about it; one of the biggest moments is a German suplex by Law that he manages even to hold onto and bridge despite Baine's size. Baine kicks out, though, and turns back to his original plan, destroying Law with a boot before working him over and tossing him out of the ring. </p><p> </p><p>

He sets up to kneedrop him from the second rope to the outside, but Law rolls out of the way at the last second, grabbing his nightstick and following up the injured knee with a shot to the head – to the knee – to the head – to the knee.</p><p> </p><p>

Especially to the knee. Baine manages to end the assault, one massive hand dumping Law on his ass. He climbs back onto the apron, Law clips the knee with the nightstick again again. Baine reaches out for him, and Law grabs the second rope, flipping it up over his head. Trapping him in the classic hangman trap – head sandwiched between the top two ropes.</p><p> </p><p>

Rick climbs onto the apron at the corner and raises his arm, getting the crowd to react. A short charge later leads to a Long Arm Of the Law on the trapped, choking neck that flips Baine over the top rope, releasing him from the ropes and leaving him absolutely stationary on the mat.</p><p> </p><p>

For good measure, Law drops the leg across the back of his neck, rolls him over, and gets the pin.</p><p>

Freddy Huggins vs. Sean Deeley w/ Laura Huggins</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Huggins has very little in the way of crowd support here, which does slow the crowd down in reacting. But the story of this match really is the development of Sean Deeley from frowning, focused submission machine to a man who seems genuinely to enjoy what he's doing. He's picking his moments, circling, having fun, almost taunting Freddy.</p><p> </p><p>

And if he's almost taunting Freddy, Laura actually <em>is</em>. Which keeps the faster wrestler rattled and frustrated, which leads, inevitably, to Sean Deeley getting the front choke lock to secure victory.</p><p>

<em>Shout At The Devil</em> hits, and Mayhem Midden comes down to the ring, Charlie Thatcher in tow and briefcase in hand.</p><p> </p><p>

“Before this next match takes place,” he begins, “I just want to take a moment to speak to two of the people involved.</p><p> </p><p>

“The Board of Investors met last week to review footage from our first ever intergender match. There was a lot of discussion, but the end of the deliberations is this: in 2009, TCW will introduce a championship for women to compete for. I've been assigned the task of finding the very best in women's wrestling to bring before you fans.” He grins, just for a second. </p><p> </p><p>

“I'm lucky; we've already got two of them here. Next month, at Malice in Wonderland, one woman will make history by becoming the first person...” He hands the briefcase to Charlie, who holds it flat so he can open it and lift something out.</p><p> </p><p>

Chris Rockwell & Lauren Easter vs. Kate Dangerous & Rocky Golden</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The two men essentially brawl. Meanwhile, as the bell rings, Lauren Easter vaults over the top rope and charges for Kate Dangerous. As the brawl escalates, Dangerous and Easter put on a wrestling clinic, soaring moves, takedowns, mat holds and big suplexes a speciality.</p><p> </p><p>

The camera certainly spends more time on the women than it does on the men, who are, simply, fighting to be fighting – or possibly not; as the fight goes on it becomes clear that Golden has a strategy, and that at the core of that strategy is a desire to make Rockwell lose his temper. The more furious Rockwell gets, the more Golden grins and the better he likes it.</p><p> </p><p>

But he hasn't accounted for Lauren Easter. After escaping from a Boston crab through sheer flexibility, Easter thumbs Dangerous' eye and catches Rocky from behind with a forearm to the back of the head. He stumbles, which is all Rockwell needs; a shining wizard takes him to the grond and the Furusawa Armbar clamps down immediately. As Dangerous tries to break it up, Lauren Easter cuts her off with a Northern Lights Suplex, and Rocky Golden is forced to tap out.</p><p>

<span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/LobsterWarrior_PS.jpg</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Chris Rockwell, uncharacteristically, releases the hold immediately, rolling to his knees, head back, eyes clenched shut, arms held high in celebration. He climbs the nearest turnbuckle, grinning likc a madman, screaming something indistinct at the crowd as his thumbs jab back toward him, pointing at him.</p><p> </p><p>

He repeats it once, then moves across to another turnbuckle, where he gets partway through the same thing – and <em>First We Take Manhattan</em> begins to play.</p><p> </p><p>

Phil Vibert is on his way out.</p><p> </p><p>

He stops at the entrance, again, and offers a slow, mocking clap to Rockwell. </p><p> </p><p>

“Well, Chris, you won one,” he says, smirking. “Actually, that's not true. From where I'm standing, Lauren did all the heavy lifting. But you got a win in the books, so congratulations for that, I guess.” He shrugs. “You used to be great, man. What the hell happened?”</p><p> </p><p>

Rockwell bails from the ring, heading after him at a run, but Vibert is already out of shot. Behind him, Lauren Easter smiles slightly.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/totalbanner.jpg</span><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/SammyBach_alt1.jpg</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

An electric guitar is heard, the tone rising steadily as the video screen shows Sammy Bach at play. He smiles at the cameras, the music reaching a peak before he sets the guitar aside. “Perhaps Tornado will be the next name I add to my list,” he muses. “Or Bruce, or... Well.” He smiles. “Tonight I sustain my legend. Tonight I crush Sam Keith, and tonight, I use that victory for rebirth. </p><p> </p><p>

“Tonight, I become champion. I end the name that Tommy Cornell could not...” He smiles. “Which should prove a point. I hope you're watching, Wolf.”</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/SamKeith.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The screen's image cuts. Sam Keith is in view once again, this time dressed ready to compete. He nods gravely at the camera. “Sammy Bach,” he says, “Is... someone I'd probably look up to, if I was starting out today.</p><p> </p><p>

“He knows exactly what he wants. He has the talent to get it.” That manipulative smile is back on Keith's lips. “He understands the sport inside out. More than that...” He taps his finger against his temple. “He understands the sportsmen. He knows how to get inside minds. How to make you worried. How to start you off on the back foot and keep you there.</p><p> </p><p>

“And on top of that talent and that understanding, he has an incredible tolerance for pain. Sammy Bach is going places, and the way to the place he wants to go right now lies straight through me. And that... That has me worried.</p><p> </p><p>

“But Sammy, your mindgames don't. Your attacks don't. Because I'm not starting out today.</p><p> </p><p>

“Today, I'm a multi-time champion who's about to go into a match where the only thing you can't do is bring a friend or a weapon. And I know everything you know about the games before a match.</p><p> </p><p>

“If I'm worried, Sammy, it's because I know how good you are.”</p><p> </p><p>

Sam Keith © w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. Sammy Bach</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The two men set out to live up to the promises they've just made, and the result is fast – faster than you'd expect from a man Sam Keith's age – and slick. </p><p> </p><p>

Keith is concentrating on Bach's knee from the off, looking to limit him, but Sammy Bach has his own plan; pin Keith fast, pin him often, and do some damage in between. All he's looking for is to shock the breath out of an old veteran for the three seconds he needs; the fact he literally opens the contest with a kick to the groin shows how he plans to go on.</p><p> </p><p>

That riles the fans, and they certainly stay riled, with Bach constantly trying one cheap trick or another. The thing is, Sam Keith has just as many, and the contest stays even, though by twenty minutes in Keith is showing signs of flagging.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/TexasHangman.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Fortunately, he doesn't have much longer to wrestle. Sammy Bach lands a bulldog and has just made it back to his feet, gingerly testing the knee Keith has been attacking – and Texas Pete lands a chair right between his eyes, drawing the DQ immediately. Standing over him, Pete yells “How's it feel when it's YOU?”</p><p>

<span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/RickyDaleJohnson.jpg</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

<em>No Shelter</em> begins to play, and with it, as ever, comes Ricky Dale Johnson. He takes a moment to take in the fans' reaction, smiling, and waves. </p><p> </p><p>

Then he points upward, above the ring, at the cage structure hanging above. The fans' volume redoubles, and RDJ smiles all the wider.</p><p> </p><p>

“Fool me once,” he begins, “shame on me. Fool me twice, I'm putting you in a cage.”</p><p> </p><p>

He looks around again. “Phil, tonight you don't get involved. Tonight you don't reach out and touch someone. So we'll actually settle this... won't we?”</p><p> </p><p>

He walks down to the ring. “Sorry to spring this on you, Remo... Huh.” He stops, tilting his head to one side. “I actually mean that. Strange, but... I do. Well... it can't be helped. The Board only moves so fast, and like you heard earlier tonight, they've got a lot on their plate. Come on down, Remo – let's get this done.”</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/Match%20Types/cage.jpg</span><p>

Remo Richardson w/ Phil Vibert vs. RDJ</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Last month, these two produced a pretty entertaining, fast go-round that captured the crowd's attention. This month is no different. This month, the cage makes things more personal.</p><p> </p><p>

And, of course, it's also a weapon. RDJ is no stranger to the cage, and nor is Remo – though someone who'd followed his career might say he'd stepped his game up tonight, and perhaps he has. Or perhaps it's just the fact that his opponent, this fight... it's all much more intense, much more brutal than the environments he's traditionally found himself in, and he's responding to that.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/FrankiePerez.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

In either case, it's equal before Frankie Perez arrives. The P-Dawg scales the cage, sitting poised on top as if ready to jump off.</p><p> </p><p>

RDJ has to give this threat its attention, even while Perez simply sits there, and Remo takes full advantage of RDJ's distraction.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/LobsterWarrior_PS.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

He's just got two off the Lumbar Puncture when the crowd react again – Chris Rockwell hits ringside and scrambles straight up the cage wall behind Frankie Perez. Reaching up with one hand, he shoves the All Action Champion into the ring itself, ending his threat, and takes his place for a moment.</p><p> </p><p>

As Remo turns to witness his ally's impact, RDJ staggers him backward with a roaring uppercut – and Rockwell leaps, driving a knee into Remo's chest. Remo drops from the impact, and before he can get up, a winded and obviously pained Chris Rockwell gets the headlock and rains down a flurry of knees into his face, before picking him up and whipping him toward RDJ.</p><p> </p><p>

Ricky gets the Southern Justice on instinct, but before he covers he favours Rockwell with a long, baleful glare. Remo, however, doesn't kick out until a hair too late.</p><p>

New Wave © vs. Easy Riders w/ Carl Batch</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Both teams come out with weapons at their sides for this one. Carl Batch has begun to adopt a characteristic strut to the ring, and as he performs it, the Riders, behind him, exchange amused glances.</p><p> </p><p>

Once the bell rings, all four men get involved – why not, after all?</p><p> </p><p>

And in the opening minutes, the New Wave remind the world once again why they're often called the BEST TAG TEAM IN THE WORLD TODAY, using their DaVE-won experience to run roughshod over the Easy Riders. The thing is – as Mayhem Midden notes - “it sure looks like the Riders are trying to find their measure before they cut loose.”</p><p> </p><p>

Billy Fonda takes a slam from Scout onto a steel chair; Guide sets up for the Guided Missile while Scout charges Peter Hopper, cutting him off.</p><p> </p><p>

Guide stalks Fonda, then comes in – but Fonda was faking, and as Guide charges, he takes a thrown chair straight into the face at top speed.</p><p> </p><p>

Fonda and Hopper promptly beat down Scout, then take him to the corner. Hopper passes Carl Batch a chain, and it gets looped around Scout's neck, anchoring him to the turnbuckle as Batch holds on, choking him, keeping him in place. </p><p> </p><p>

Meanwhile, the Riders unfold the chair, setting it up in the ring, then hit the Emergency Stop on Guide, dumping him onto the chair. It's academic from that moment on that there will be new tag team champions.</p><p>

John Anderson © vs. Wolf Hawkins</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

This has to be the most simple of TCW's current rivalries. There's a title. There's a point of pride. And there's a former alliance. That's all it takes to bring these two together, and once they're together, they perform so well.</p><p> </p><p>

It's the epitome of the traditional professional wrestling match, with the two men using their understanding of one another to deliver on the highest level. Everything is crisp, slick, and fast. Everything makes sense, as Anderson plays a cagey game, Hawkins is out to prove a point, and the two work on each other.</p><p> </p><p>

This is the third in their series, plus a couple of Machines/Syndicate contests. The exchanges are the natural consequence of that, always one block, one counter, one reversal longer than in prior matches. It's difficult to explain quite what's so captivating without referring back to those matches, and Azaria manages to layer in those references without tangling the contest up.</p><p> </p><p>

In the end, Anderson is the man with the decisive counter, getting the Ammo Dump after fifteen minutes and securing a pinfall from that.</p><p>

Troy Tornado © vs. Eddie Peak vs. Jeremy Stone</p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

All three men are hungry for this one, and they don't exactly hold back, Syndicate issues or not. Tornado is a dervish here, clearly smarting from Bruce's return, looking to prove something. Stone, meanwhile, sees Peak's championship inexperience as the weak link. </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/TommyCornell_alt5.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

In the eighteenth minute, with Sparrow downed, Tommy Cornell hits the ring with the retired TCW belt and lays out both Tornado and Peak, the latter by placing the belt over his shoulder and getting the Rough Ride. </p><p> </p><p>

Jeremy Stone makes the cover on Peak, but he kicks out. He covers Tornado - and Sean Deeley pulls him out of the ring to break the count. </p><p> </p><p>

Cornell goes right after Deeley, and Eddie Peak levels Cornell from behind.</p><p> </p><p>

Stone gets clear, escaping, it seems, into the ring, and turns around – right into a Star Maker!</p><p>

<p>Notes:</p><p> </p><p>

- And so ends 2008. From now on, all shows will be simmed via TEW2010. Still a bit more work to be done before the database corresponds to my savegame, but we're getting there.</p><p> </p><p>

- Nine months in charge in-diary and we arrive at our first A* show... as the save ends, to be renewed in a new game. Still, this one served its purpose; for me, at least, this would have been a worthwhile purchase if I lived in the C-Verse.</p><p> </p><p>

- The New Wave fall at last. I like long title reigns, but I'm not sure that the Easy Riders will endure for as long. We'll see.</p><p> </p><p>

- Sweet-ass Women's belt by ReapeR deserves singling out. The brief was for a belt that showed the division would be taken as seriously as the men's, and I think he nailed it.</p><p> </p><p>

- It's going to be a couple days before much else happens on the diary front as I finish off the database adjustments. In the interests of passing some time, I'm happy to answer any questions I can without giving away future plans - feel free to inquire.</p><p> </p><p>

- Thanks to everyone reading, and to everyone who's bumped this thread with predictions over the last week as I got my arse back in gear. Malice In Wonderland is the show I view as the 'Mania-equivalent for TCW (I know I'm unusual in that) so hopefully what we have on tap for that will keep your interest piqued.</p>

Tuesday 2nd January 2008

Now that the year-end hangovers have worn off, I'm happy to say that the mood backstage before our first broadcast of the year is about as good as it's ever been.

In part, this is because our new PPV deal came at the absolute perfect time to make for a record buyrate on the show where we recap the year to date. In part, it's because of the dirtsheets.

Or, really, what they've evolved into. Some of these magazines are pretty slick these days and virtually all of them have an online version which goes up a lot faster.

The long and the short of this, essentially, is that the end of year wrestling awards arrive before the middle of January these days. I say 'awards'; they don't mean a great deal, but they're something of a source of pride when they've been earned. (Speaking for myself, I'll admit to a certain amount of pride at having a Match of the Year and a couple of very high places on the Power 100 in my past). The Power 100 this year was pretty dominated by us – a quarter of the wrestlers showcased are under contract to us, more if you're inclined, for some reason, to give us credit for Jack Bruce.

The following excerpts are reprinted from Pro Wrestling Almanac (January 2009) with kind permission of the copyright holders

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/Dangerous/SWF%20Footage/PWA.jpg

Young Wrestler Of The Year

It's been an astonishingly good year to be young and talented. Aaron Andrews has been featured on TCW programming pretty heavily all year, and he's been moving up the card the whole time. Alicia Strong's first full year as a pro was as good as you'd expect. Ash Campbell has showed his desire – he's working for Dean Daniels, George DeColt AND Mitch Naess at the moment, flying around North America constantly to hone his craft. Emerald Angel remains at or near the top of WLW. Gino Montero hasn't had a full year in the business, but he's nonetheless strung together a series of matches no one would expect him to be able to coax out of his opponents in his own promotion of MHW.

I could go on; the Keith twins have certainly made an impact in TCW, too. Jay Chord has chosen the tough test that is INSPIRE. Marc DuBois has made as much out of the sudden gap at the top of SWF as anyone not called Rich Money. Seiji Jimbo has had a first brief title reign in PGHW, taking home the Historical Japan strap.

But, with the people already mentioned and one other, this was always going to be TCW's year. Under the eye of first Joel Bryant and then Horatio Dangerous, Cornell's company has radically stepped up its interest in developmental companies, and by their signings it's clear they're looking to the future. (And why not? Sam Keith and RDJ can't go forever, and while I think they've been good signings, nor can Jeremy Stone or Eric Tyler.)

The thing is, only Aaron Andrew's late acceleration really has a chance of taking this year's achievement from the man who's won it.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/WolfHawkins_alt3.jpg

Wolf Hawkins started the year as part of the hottest stable in professional wrestling, a title on his arm. While he hasn't had that title for some time, he's been in action constantly, putting on excellent matches on a regular basis. With 71 televised matches under his belt and 41 wins, and what looks like a slow burn to a feud with mentor and TCW icon Tommy Cornell in progress, the future looks bright for Hawkins – and he caps that off by becoming PWA's Young Wrestler of the Year.

Female Wrestler of the Year

Sadly, it seems unlikely she'll repeat this next year. However, any year where a woman not nicknamed 'Sensational' or 'Thunder' wins this is an unusual year, and in any year where it happens, we can only recommend you take a look.

She started the year out with USPW, AAA and 5SSW. That makes for a hectic schedule, and dropping AAA from her commitments in October didn't really slow it down. She's wrestled 87 major matches – discounting independent appearances – in 2008, and won just under half at 84. If you need a primer on her performance, we recommend hunting down her non-title challenge to Thunder Hike or the same week's battle against Sensational Ogiwara from the Firecracker Tour in August, but the series against Kit Hatoyama she wrapped that tour with was also excellent.

Or you could check the very beginning of December's Raw Power Tour, where in the first night's main event she took the 5 Star World Title from Hike, losing it to DEVIL Karube midway through the next week when it became clear she would jump ship. Rumour has it that she was approached by TCW just before the victory; the word is that Kagawa and Chishu gave her a brief reign with the 5 Star strap as a thank you for her efforts these past five years.

On her arrival in TCW she immediately got involved in the company's first intergender tag match, and it looks pretty likely that she may be the first TCW Women's champion.

She's got more people talking about joshi on both sides of the Pacific all year, and her performances have backed that up. On top of it all, she's been helping to train aspiring grapplers at her father's Philadelphia wrestling school.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/KateDangerous.jpg

We have to give the Female Wrestler of the Year award to Kate Dangerous.

Most Improved Promotion

As always, we expect to catch some heat for this one, and the only defence we have for it, as ever, is the simple exhortation to look at the numbers.

In a year when even Richard Eisen's baby fell on hard times, when the American industry as a whole has had to hunker down and weather the storm, one promotion has found the money to invest in the future, supporting CZCW, FCW and latterly AAA with funds, hot signings, and excellent trainers. That same promotion has almost doubled its weekly broadcast time, using the extra time to showcase talent that had previously been neglected, added a women's division, and built it's own exclusive arena for upcoming events. It now broadcasts globally on PPV and covers most major areas with its flagship show Total Wrestling. It's made major signings and its PPV buyrate, as a result of global expansion and American upgrade, is through the roof, competitive with a typical SWF broadcast at recent heights rather than current lows.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/TCW-1.jpg

You can talk about how well CGC have done creatively, or the excellence of NOTBPW's wrestling. Mention WLW's rise to the point where they can offer exclusive deals. But hands down, the company that's made the biggest strides in 2008 is TCW.

Promotion of the Year

This one, as ever, created some controversy around the office. Hottest feud of the year, unquestionably, was Shuji Inukai's all-year battle with Yoshimi Musashibo over control of PGHW's Glory Crown, and the fact it stayed so hot even five months after Inukai's July title win gives you some idea how much we got obsessed with it here in the PWA offices.

As ever, Dan Stone's boys have weathered the storm of talent raids to produce some of the greatest wrestling seen all year. And the founding father of PWA, the 'Big Papa' as you know him, has been insisting on SWF for this spot simply because they've finally given Rich Money the big belt to run with.

But the eventual choice is there because it's... well, it's not been a year like any other for them. TCW's feuds have seemed to overlap a lot, with one being set up before the first ends. Their tag division has gone from anaemic to excellent despite the loss of the Machines to singles competition, they're pushing young talent and new arrivals, and Mayhem Midden, we have to admit, has done far, far better as Board Representative than anyone had any right to expect.

I don't agree with everything they've done – I feel that Eric Tyler could have headlined one or two PPVs early on before becoming bogged down with the School of Tradition star-making job squad, say, and Rick Law's somewhat bizarre unstoppability doesn't quite sit right with me – but when you poll the office you'll find someone happy with almost everything, even if they dislike what I enjoyed.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/TCW-1.jpg

Add to this their dominance of the Power 100, their financial success and expansion in a horrific economic climate, and the fact they're now home to both the Young and Female Wrestlers of the Year, and they get by – as every Promotion of the Year does – on consensus.

Welcome to the new year, and we now have less than a month before Malice in Wonderland! The show of the year is almost here, and with Troy Tornado surviving last night, we know now that the unification match will see Tornado pitted against Johnny Bloodstone for the most valuable prize in professional wrestling.

Hot off his own title defence, John Anderson faces off in a non-title affair against the tenacious JD Morgan on the upcoming Total Wrestling. This one is guaranteed to be a masterclass.

What many fans called impossible happened at Psycho Circus. The Easy Riders overcame the New Wave and have all but guaranteed a space on the biggest show of the year as defending champions. Before that happenes, however, they too have a non-title challenge to face, as the Keith Brothers have thrown down the gauntlet and Carl Batch has accepted.

Tommy Cornell had some harsh words during the matchmaking meeting for Sam Keith. Tonight, Keith steps into the ring with one half of the Enforcers, Julian Watson. Cornell has all but promised that the Syndicate will tear Sam and his allies apart in his bragging backstage - look for Watson to concentrate on doing damage.

Tyson Baine has someone else in his sights. We're not quite sure why, but Baine and Koshiro Ino are set to clash. Mayhem Midden has informed us that this was at the request of one of the participants, but no word has come out on which one.

Eddie Peak was shockingly removed from the equation in last night's title match by Tommy Cornell. Mr Cornell has decreed that Peak must face Eric Tyler tonight - an unconnected decision or a distraction attempt? You be the judge, but what's for sure is that Peak cannot afford to overlook Tyler, the man who did so much to the 'Bloody Handed God' back in DaVE.

And to complete the Syndicate's activity for the night, the Canadian Wrestling Machine Jeremy Stone is set to face off with Brent Hill in the main event. As Mr Midden put it when he informed us he'd made the match, "right now I just want to sit back and watch two of the world's best wrestle, you know?"

All this and more on Total Wrestling tonight - we hear that Tommy Cornell plans to offer Aaron Andrews a place in the Syndicate following his showing at Psycho Circus, and we expect Sean Deeley's involvement in the main event to have consequences.

Plus a special look at the burgeoning women's division - and both Troy Tornado and Johnny Bloodstone, our World Heavyweight Champions, are confirmed as being in the building.

Prediction Key:

JD Morgan vs. John Anderson (non-title)

The Easy Riders w/ Carl Batch vs. the Keith Brothers w/ Blonde Bombshell (non-title)

Julian Watson vs. Sam Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell

Koshiro Ino w/ Baroness Emily vs. Tyson Baine

Eddie Peak vs. Eric Tyler w/ Laura Huggins
