The Blueprint for Success

Recommended Posts

Oh, I totally agree.

It's rare for an angle to be completely fresh and new in wrestling. This is one that has so much potential and so many possible layers that the best thing to do is to give Chance the proper build to achieving his dream.

I too will be rooting for Chance but I doubt think he will win, nor do I think he should win.

It's funny, I didn't think making Chance homosexual was that big a thing, just an added wrinkle to a pretty bland worker. The more I play and write with him, the more I realize what a big deal an openly gay worker could be. It reminds me of a story about my favorite wrestler, Dusty Rhodes. A few years ago, Dusty went to AAA show in Mexico and was commenting on the different workers. When Pimpinella came to the ring, Dusty went nuts, laughing and raving about Pimpi. According to the story, Dusty wished that Pimpi had been working when he booked Florida because he could have drawn a lot of money.

While Chance is, in many ways, a refutation of the exotico concept, in that he is gay man who wrestles a very hard-hitting, adre I say butch, style, he is an example of how tweaking the most basic of concepts can work. Chance Fortune, Irish kid from Boston, feuding with gangsta Kurt Laramee is not that interesting. Chance Fortune, confident openly gay man, versus unrepentantly homophobic Kurt Laramee is much more interesting and something I look forward to booking. In a way, I feel like it is a privilege to write this. I hope I can live up to the hype.

So, coming this Wednesday, is the Blueprint Presents: 97 Problems featuring Kurt Laramee vs. Chance Fortune for the Blueprint Openweight Title in an Australian Rules Ladder Match. No referee, no rules. Which ever man has the belt in his hands and his feet on the mat is the winner.

Certainly tread light to begin with. The story has to build from match to rivalry to blood feud. Start light and every week push a little bit more and a little bit more, depending on audience reactions and what you think you can get away with. Frankly, I doubt you'll offend too many people on this board. While hopefully a lot of people will empathize with Chance, there can't be more than a handful on a site like this that will truly understand what he's going through. 99% of readers will be able to separate a fictional character designed to be hated, from the author.

It's going to be a thin line between fighting homophobia and fueling it, I fear.

97 Problems goes up Wednesday, so procrastinating prognosticators need to get those guesses in.

96 Problems is going up Friday, so if anyone wants to suggest a match or 5 for the Fan's Choice show, go ahead. Just make sure you are not suggesting a rematch, natch,

As Real As It Gets, the first major show, will go up next Wednesday.

Chance Fortune Has The Microphone!

"One year ago, I was on national television every single week. I was a rising star in the second biggest promotion in the entire world. A man named Robert Oxford tagged me, Chance Fortune, the kid from Boston, as a future TCW World Heavyweight Champion. My path, my career, my destiny, was laid out before me. The whole world was mine..."

Chance stops for a second and takes a deep breath.

"Then, I threw it away. I took all of those plans and broke them into a thousand pieces when I broke Sammy Bach's nose. That moment, I have to live that moment every single day of my life. What do fans ask me about? That night. What do the boys in the back ask me about? That exact moment of my life."

Chance takes another break. The crowd is chanting "Chance! Chance!"

"That was then, this is now. That moment is over and it has been over for almost a year. That night, that split second, will not haunt me forever. I refuse to be defined by the worst night of my life. I am not the man who attacked Sammy Bach. I am not the gay wrestler. I am not who you tell me I am."

Chance takes a deep breath and closes his eyes.

"I am who I choose to be. I am Chance Fortune."

Chance drops the mic and walks out. The crowd is cheering.

Ted Brady vs. Hell's Bouncer

Hell's Bouncer takes a long time walking to the ring, letting Ted soak in the eerie mood. Ted, veteran that he is, circles Bouncer and tries a single leg takedown. Hell's Bouncer clubs him across the back. Ted goes down to the mat. Bouncer picks him up by the hair and hits a shortarm clothesline for 2. Brady attempts a vertical suplex, but Bouncer counters with one of his own. He lifts Ted from the mat again and hits a Damnation Drop.

Winner: Hell's Bouncer

Swoop McCarthy is Backstage!

Swoop comes to the ring to 'Bonk!' and the crowd is singing along. After a very slow walk to the ring, McCarthy grabs a microphone and starts talking.

"Hello, Detroit!"

The crowd goes nuts!

"So, Detroit, what do you think of Hell's Bouncer? Scary, huh?"

The crowd boos like crazy.

"Yeah, me, too. That Bouncer fella thinks he is the scariest thing in the entire world. He keeps threatening to drag me to Hell. Hell? He could not be the Bouncer for a club downtown, let alone Hell."

The crowd goes nuts.

"Look, Mr. Bouncer, I am not afraid of you. You should be afraid of me, fella. At 'As Real As It Gets' you will see the Bonk up close and personal, you'll feel that Bonk and you'll know what Hell is like."

Nation of Filth vs. Robert Oxford and Jumbo Jackson

Robert Oxford comes to the ring with the one man who makes a 3 on 2 disadvantage seem fair, Jumbo Jackson. Grunt and Oxford start the match, with some rudimentary brawling and a nice Gorilla Press by Grunt. In comes Stink, who stomps on the older man. Jumbo tries to break it up, but the ref steps in. Animal and the Nation of Filth stomp on Oxford. Grunt attempts a powerbomb on Oxford, but he counters with a concealed low blow. In comes Jackson! Jumbo takes out Grunt and Stink and goads Animal into climbing onto the apron. Grunt attempts a spear on Jumbo, but it is sidestepped. Grunt hits Animal instead. Confused, Grunt is easy pickings for Jumbo, who tosses him into the corner. Splash! As Grunt stumbles out of the corner, Jumbo tags in Oxford. Oxford Comma! Jackson and Oxford win!

Swoop McCarthy vs. Jefferson Stardust

Jefferson dropkicks Swoop's knee to start. A couple of kicks to the hamstring and then Stardust applies a leg grapevine. Swoop gets out of it easily. With his vertical base, Swoop powerslams Stardust for 2. Stardust goes for an Irish Whip, but it is reversed and Swoop hits the Bonk! for the win.

North American Scum vs. the Dirty White Boys

Watson and Wayne exchange blows with Lead Belly and Hogg to start, but that gets them nowhere fast, so both men hit thumbs to the eye and they double team Lead Belly. A double suplex and Wayne takes over, hammering on the bigger man. Lead Belly muscles out of an attempted Butterfly Suplex and tags in Grease Hogg. Hogg hits a pair of clotheslines and a spinebuster before Watson charges into the ring. While the ref pushes him out, the Dirty White Boys hit a Motorhead.

Skuzz vs. Paul Steadyfast

While they are separated by almost a decade, Skuzz and Paul have similar American cruiserweight styles. Paul drops some power moves on the slightly smaller Skuzz, who absorbs the punishment well. Skuzz uses an eye rake and a stomp on Paul's foot to get the playing field leveled. A dropkick/standing moonsault sequence gets 2. Paul is dazed, but he manages to hit a dropkick. He picks Skuzz up for a suplex, but Skuzz has recovered enough for a small package. It gets 2. Paul is frustrated and takes a swing at Skuzz, who uses the forward momentum to hit a hip toss and, without releasing Paul's arm, he transitions it into an armbar. Paul has to tap out.

Winner: Skuzz

Kurt Laramee vs. Chance Fortune

the Blueprint Openweight Title Tournament Final

Chance chops away to start. Superplex, and Fortune just walks over and retrieves the ladder. Laramee dropkicks him and busts Fortune’s nose open. Gore. The two men take turns using the ladder to batter one another. Fortune gets his leg caught in it and Laramee pulls it down to the mat. Kurt goes to climb the ladder, but slips on some of Fortune's blood. Ew. Kurt gets up and pushes Chance off of the ladder. Laramee pushes the ladder over onto Chance before erecting it again. Chance gets up and takes control of the ladder with some elbows. Fortune hits an Exploder off of one ladder onto another, which damn near kills Laramee. Chance uses the ladder like a piledriver and smashed Laramee's face, then climbs to the top…and decides to drop a legdrop off the top on him. Out of nowhere, Skuzz is back out and he has something in his hand. He jaws with Fortune and then sprays him in the eyes with what looks to be pepper spray. Fortune is down. Kurt gets to his feet, climbs the ladder and retrieves the belt. Fortune is rolling around the mat, clutching his eyes.

The Blueprint For Success

Even as early as the Blueprint's third show, the three man booking rotation was evident. Robert Oxford, Julian Watson, and myself each had a hand in the day to day road agent duties. While Hell's Bouncer, Ripper LeStat, Kurt Laramee, and Swoop McCarthy lent a hand to the overall direction the storylines took, it was our three man committee that worked out the blow by blow for the matches.

From the start, our three different approaches to wrestling made for a different sort of product. Robert, being a man with a career almost as long as Julian and I had been alive, approached things in a very traditional way. Thing is, the approach he came from was a hard-hitting, psychology based style that could be adapted to most of our workers. Julian, coming from four years in Japan, mapped matches around the use of a small set of standard moves and devastating finishers. The school of thought I came from was different, a more rapidfire, move after move, style.

When we determined that Chance Fortune needed a new finisher, there was a meeting of the minds. My thought was that Chance should use a simple, ugly move, like a DDT or a Fisherman Buster. My idea was that Chance should be able to win matches in a flash, with a quick, decisive finisher. Robert favored a more elaborate finisher, like his own Oxford Comma, a move that requires a lot of buildup. In the end, it was Julian's concept, a quick, repeatable move that could be hit upwards of three or more times a match. Being able to hit a move off of the top rope, off of a ladder, off of the apron and the such would make Chance flexible if he needed to have gimmick matches. Robert was the one who suggested a suplex and Julian finally settled on the Exploder.

Such a process was gone through for most everyone on the roster and for most matches, with all three of us trying to find a way to make the matches stand out from every other company in the world. By the fourth show, we were hitting our stride.

From Wikipedia:

(I imagine Chance's is more like Jun Akiyama than Shelton Benjamin.)

Also called a T-Bone suplex, the exploder suplex is a variant of a belly to belly suplex. The wrestler performing the Exploder suplex seizes the opponent in a head-and-shoulder hold as in a side slam, and takes hold of the opponent's near leg's upper thigh with his free arm, and then falls backwards and throws him/her overhead down to the mat on their shoulders and upper back, in the same motion as a belly to belly.

A slight variation called blizzard suplex exists in which the opponent is thrown over horizontally so that they land flat on their back instead of their shoulders. The wrestler can also keep the hold in this variation and bridge his back, pinning the opponent's shoulders down to the mat. There are also several modified versions of an exploder, such as one where the attacker would flip it into a powerslam pin rather than throwing the opponent overhead while falling back.

The morning after 96 Problems: Fan's Choice, Swoop gathered all of us together at the Asylum. Every wrestler, both announcers, even our ref, Oz Lord, was there, sitting on steel folding chairs in the freezing cold. Swoop told us to be there at 7:30 AM. By 8:15, the natives were getting restless. Watches and cell phones were being checked and murmurs echoed off of the cement floor. It was Grunt who finally stood up to leave. He had convinced Animal Harker and Stink to get up with him and the whole Nation of Filth was filing down the aisle, past Rich and Famous and the Ring Generals as they complained about having their time wasted.

"Hello, my beloved employees!" bellowed Swoop from the back of the Asylum. "What is wrong, Nation of Filth? Do you have a prior engagement?"

"I have been around this business too long and my time is too valuable to be wasting time waiting around in an empty arena all damn morning!" Stink spit out into Swoop's face. The other, younger members of his entourage puffed up their chests in response to his bravado.

"Now, calm down Mr. Stink. This is not a waste of anyone's time. Especially not yours. Kindly retake your seat." Swoop said, a smile wide as the outback never leaving his face. He was not intimidated by the old punk, not in the least.

"Your gonna have to make us-" Grunt started, but a swift elbow to the gut from Stink put a stop to it.

"We're sitting, we're sitting. This better be important, though." Stink said, the edge taken out of his voice.

"Oh, this is important." Swoop said flatly, walking up to the front of the group and climbing onto the ring apron. He pulled a piece of paper from his pocket.

"Have any of you heard of Wrestling Donkey? It is one of the top wrestling sites on the Internet and they sent a writer to last night's show. This morning, he posted this on Wrestling Donkey and now it is all over our message boards."

"From the first of two dark matches, a bland affair between the Dirty White Boys and the thrown together team of Raphael and Ripper LeStat, to the abortive main event, another thrown together tag between Kurt Laramee and Skuzz against Chance Fortune and Robert Oxford, the Blueprint's 96 Problems show was the epitome of boring, inoffensive wrestling. Judging from the main show opener, a supposed six man featuring the Nation of Filth and Animal Harker facing off with the Rock City Stars and Jefferson Stardust, I would venture to say I saw over 50 problems. The Detroit fans, in their eternal wisdom, ripped four of the six men in the match to shreds. I have never heard warring "You F'ed Up" chants before. Excepting Stardust, the Blueprint could fire all of the so-called wrestlers in this match and be better for it..."

Swoop lowered the sheet of paper and looked around the ring. No man in that room felt very positive at that moment. As a competitor in the 'abortive' main event, I stood up and opened my big fat mouth.

"But Swoop, there has to have been something positive about the show? Right?"

"Sure, there were a few."

"The highlights of the night all happened outside of active competition. Cat Jemson was introduced as the manager for the Natural Storm, who flushed all of their good will from the crowd in a truly crap match against Rich and Famous. How Jackpot Jordan didn't hang himself after that match, I'll never guess.

"A pair of dueling promos between Swoop McCarthy and Hell's Bouncer only showed why Swoop is the owner of his own company and that Bouncer will likely be in the SWF any day now."

Hell's Bouncer took a second to take in the jealous looks the rest of the locker room were shooting his way.

"Unfortunately, Bouncer has a ways to go in the ring, judging from a mostly horrible squash over Stretch the Chicken Boy. I don't know who to blame for Stretch coming into the Blueprint, the fans for voting for him or management for hiring such a talentless loser."

Stretch dropped his head into his hands. Everyone was glad it wasn't them being ripped like this.

"Hell, the best match of the night was between USPW mainstay Anger and Swoop. All they did was have a serviceable brawl with a clean finish, but it was better than the opener or the truly terrible main.

"The Main Event, a tag between Skuzz and Kurt Laramee versus Chance Fortune and Robert Oxford, was an example of why an indy should not take booking cues from the SWF. You can get away with this garbage if you have Vengeance and Runaway Train taking on Christian Faith and Steve Frehley, but this group of Misfit Toys came off looking weak."

Every Blueprint employee squirmed in their chair. No one felt good about any of this, least of all Oxford, Watson, and myself. A lot of this came down on us and we felt it.

"So, last night's show does not exist, fellas. There will be no DVD release for 96 Problems and it will never be mentioned again. Ever. This was a speed bump on the way to the top, but it taught me a lesson."

Swoop took a deep breath.

"In two days, we hold 'As Real As It Gets' right here, in this ring. This is our first major show. Our title will be defended for the first time. This is were old feuds end and new ones begin. This is where some careers will be made and some careers will end. This is not a threat. Sunday is the last chance for some of you to get with the program."

Swoop dropped to the floor and walked out the back door. Everyone had questions, but none would be answered until Sunday night. It really was As Real As It Gets.

"That is not my music, dude. That was the music I came out to when I was a child. When I was a child, I thought that everything was about money. Morning, noon, and night, all that mattered was money. I did things, bad things, for money you would not believe. I carved the flesh of men, on the word and payroll of Phil Vibert. I slashed them to ribbons. The King of the Streets? Hell no! I was the Slave to the Dollar. I don't say that lightly. If

my Father knew the things I would do for money back then, he would have aborted me."

"And I would have deserved it. I was a creep. The cruelties I committed to the people I hated was nothing compared to the things I did to the people I loved. Cat, you have no idea how sorry I am for what I did to you. Not the

stuff people know about, the real stuff. The real bad stuff."

"Hit my music."

"Word is Bond," Kurt's music from SWF, plays. Kurt gestures to cut it off.

"That is even worse. That music is what Richard Eisen gave me. I was worse than a child, I was a fool. Eisen taught me that money was not everything. I was stupid, young, and rich. I had sold out my friends, my mentor, and the only woman I only loved. I had sold everything for what? Some money. A diamond earring? Richard showed me that power was what was important. Holding sway over other men, that was what would fill the empty hole inside me. That would make me a real man."

"I had three men who I thought would follow me into the depths of Hell. Knuckles? He was the guy who partied harder than I did, but he was the guy who worked harder than me, too. When we met, all he wanted was to wrestle on TV, to be a star. He did not want the money, the women. When we drank, he drank more, he laughed more, he had more fun. When we worked out, he ran further, lifted more, he did more Hindu squats than any man I have ever met."

"One thing you do not know is that Knuckles has a wife and a kid. He loves that woman more than I have loved anyone, even Cat. He also has a son, a little boy. He named that boy Kurtis. For real. That is as real as it gets. Even more than losing my friend, when he stabbed me in the back, he took my God son, too. I cannot forgive that."

"Shady K, he kept my head on straight. He kept telling me that we were going to far, playing with fire too often. Shady is the man who told me that Eisen would never let me get over on him. Too much money, too much power. I should have listened to Shady, man, but I was a fool."

"Then there was Carl. Carl is my brother. Carl quit the biggest promotion in the world for me. Who does that? Only Carl, man, only Carl."

"The night that Death Row tried to end my career, I realized something important. If the people you rely on are motivated by money and power, then anyone with more power or more money can twist them. There's always more money, man. Someone will buy your friends, if you let them. No, I needed something else."

Kurt undoes the belt of his jeans and takes them off. Underneath, he is wearing red and white trunks, matching North American Scum. The Japanese characters from the NAS shirt is on the back of his trunks.

"I realized that when the words turn to lies and the money is all spent, you only have one thing to drive you. Carl, what do my trunks say?"

Kurt, Gareth, and Julian fold their arms.

Carl: "Kirai."

Carl spikes the microphone. All four men stand in the ring and soak in the boos.
