So when's the next chance to write something into an optional box? I got a whole barrel of Rock catchphrases this morning and i want to use them <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

<p>It was more of a Mafia reference. I've never come across "roleblock" in a D&D context before. <img alt=":o" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/redface.png.900245280682ef18c5d82399a93c5827.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

And yeah, that last one deserved the double facepalm.</p>

Funny how that worked out. It's almost like you guys knew that I was going to drop a "test score" at the end of the chapter and decided to skip the "final." Well for people like Marcel Fromage (sometimes it doesn't pay to make yourself known <img alt=";)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/wink.png.686f06e511ee1fbf6bdc7d82f6831e53.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png">) I wouldn't want to skip the next assessment (which is Monday) as it's worth a grand total of seven points and is the last one before the chapter ends. I still don't know what the top "student(s)" will get for being the best of the chapter, but I'll figure something out by next week. </p><p> </p><p> As for the predictions themselves, they were pretty much in line with what I thought was going to happen. Wrestling For Gold wasn't the capstone event that you might see in later chapters. The only really storyline that we finished was the tournament itself. Of course that was the whole point of this chapter, to give people an example of how to create storylines from nothing. Tempest and Raphael are now enemies thanks to Raphael's boy, Justin Sensitive, helping Raphael defeat Tempest in the Semi-Finals, Warren Technique's tainted win over Flynn certainly doesn't close their newly minted feud, Manic Attack's preference to extra curricular beat downs are most likely going to get them into trouble down the road, and you have to think Davis Wayne Newton is going to have a target on his back now that he is the champion of the company. </p><p> </p><p> Speaking of feuds, I guess now is the correct time to give you my reasoning for putting Chris Flynn and Warren Technique into a feud. It's no where as funny as your responses, but here we go: Warren Technique is still highly bitter from being fired from Canadian Charisma Championship Combat. And while there are a good number of wrestlers in the promotion that work for 4C Chris Flynn isn't just any worker. He is the first "home grown" talent that 4C produced. Warren doesn't see Flynn as a wrestler, he sees him as the personification of Canadian Charisma Championship Combat. And on a non-kayfabe note, I also saw Chris Flynn as one of the better prospect on the roster. With his relatively high grades in the performance and physical skills he seemed like one of the few members of the roster that I could see being more than cannon fodder two years down the road. I also saw Raphael as the better of the two main event heels, making Warren an ideal choice for this storyline.</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="25030" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><p><span>http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/foolinc/TEW108/Bannerslogos/wccwbanner.jpg</span></p><div style="text-align:center"></div><p> <strong><span style="font-size:18px">Overview July 2008</span></strong></p><p> </p><p> <strong>Popularity:</strong> 7.2% PAR (+1.4%)</p><p> <strong>Prestige:</strong> .6% (+.1%)</p><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline">Finances</span></strong></p><p> Cash: -$450</p><p> Performance: -$1,049</p><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline">Income</span></p><p> Ticket Sales: $77</p><p> Sponsorships: $4,244</p><p> Merchandise: $1,070</p><p> Misc.: $112</p><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline">Expenditures</span></p><p> Workers: $4,578</p><p> Show Cost: $700</p><p> Marketing: $250</p><p> Merchandise: $374</p><p> Production: $250</p><p> Misc.: $400</p><p> </p><hr><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline">Skill Increases</span></strong></p><p> Chris Flynn: Puroresu (F- to F)</p><p> Davis Wayne Newton: Aerial (C to C+)</p><p> DeMento: Aerial (F to F+), Flashiness (F to F+)</p><p> Jerry Martin: Selling (D to D+)</p><p> Randy Maxx: Mat (F to F+)</p><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline">Popularity Increases</span></strong></p><p> Chris Flynn: PAR (F to F+)</p><p> Davis Wayne Newton: PAR (E- to E)</p><p> Jerry Martin: PAR (F+ to F)</p><p> Lion Heart: NE (F to F-)</p><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline">Match Results From Other Companies</span></strong></p><p> Chris Flynn: 4C (Too Sweet defeated Crusher & Flynn - E)</p><p> Davis Wayne Newton: 4C (Barry Kingman defeated Davis Wayne Newton - D+)</p><p> Jerry Martin: CGC (Grimm Quibble defeated Jerry Martin - E; Fate defeated Jerry Martin - E+), FCW (El Hijo Del Zonk defeated Jerry Martin - E), RIPW (Marshall Dillon defeated Jerry Martin - E-)</p><p> Lion Heart: RIPW (Raphael defeated Lion Heart - F+)</p><p> Randy Maxx: MAW (Max Mayhem defeated Jefferson Stardust - E-)</p><p> Raphael: RIPW (Raphael defeated Lion Heart - F+)</p><p> Warren Technique: FCW (Mainstream Hernandez defeated Warren Technique - E+)</p><p> </p><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Davis Wayne Newton once again shows us why he's the champ as he improves his skills in aerial combat as well as jumps to an E in The Parries. At the pace he is going, he'll be in a E+ or a D- before WCCW hits small (if he's doesn't get signed by TCW or SWF). This is important to me because it means that once I hit small, I can bring in more popular talent without having to worry about them too good for the rest of the roster. For example, if Davis Wayne Newton was at an E+ I could bring in guys like Thomas Morgan, Jungle Jack, Barry Kingman, Hell Monkey, Sayeed Ali, and Fumihiro Ota without worrying about whether I am hurting their value when they lose a match to the champ. They'll still complain since DWN would be more of a regional star, but at least I would still be getting what I am paying for.</p><p> </p><p> On the other side of the coin we have some bittersweet news for Jerry Martin. The good news? He signed a PPA deal with CGC. The bad news? They jobbed him out and his overness feel back down to an F. Thanks for screwing with my 3rd best heel George DeColt. You're lucky the games over or I would totally get some payback. On the bright side, the 3rd best face on the roster, Chris Flynn, bumped to an F+ after losing to Warren.</p><p> </p><p> <em><strong>Up Next (Monday, December 14th, 2009):</strong></em><em> With the last show of WCCW done and over with we have a couple of things left to do before finishing up this chapter and moving on to Chapter #2: Empire State of Mind. </em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> Over the course of this chapter a couple of key concepts were shown in action, one of them being how to run a tournament over the course of a number of events. Before closing this chapter I wanted to show how someone could book a tournament over the course of one night. And the best way to do that is to take a trip down south to a little promotion called Mid Atlantic Wrestling and take a spin at booking the 3rd Annual Rip Chord Invitational Tournament.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> For this weekend, I have something a bit different than the usual assessment survey. Instead of sending an answer to a question in private and having me share with you the results, I am going to have an open discussion in this thread on how you would run the RCI event. How many wrestlers are going be apart of the tourney? Are there going to be any talent trades or new hires? Is the event going to be made solely of tournament matches or will there be non-tournament matches as well? What kind of structure are you going to have? These are just some of the questions you need to ask yourself when booking a one day tournament. The major problem you have at the beginning with MAW is that they are heel heavy with a strong face/heel divide. The only faces of any reasonable quality on the roster are the MAW Champion Erik Strong and The Masked Patriot (Brandon Smith), so that causes some problems. Personally I wouldn't have Strong in the tournament and would have him defend his title in a seperate match, because in my opinion you should have at least a couple of buffer matches between each round.

For the size that they start at, an 8 man field in a single elimination format is fine for the RCI for now. I would go with a field of 5 MAW workers and 3 guest stars (two talent trades and one permament new signing). I would also sign up a new team to add to the very shallow tag division, where both the top teams are heel, immediately set them to face and have them face the Blondes for the Tag Titles. In the title match I would have Strong go up against one of The Firm (not necessarily Mean Jean Cattley). The winner of the RCI would of course not only win the trophy but win the title shot.

My format for the show would be

Pre-Show Match: Midcarder vs Jobber

RCI Round 1: MAW vs Talent Trade

RCI Round 1: MAW vs MAW

RCI Round 1: MAW vs New Signing

RCI Round 1: MAW vs Talent Trade

Tag Title Match: Blondes vs New Team

RCI Semi Finals: Talent Trade vs MAW

RCI Semi Finaks: New Signing vs MAW

Erik Strong defends the Mid Atlantic Championship

RCI Finals: Talent Trade vs MAW

The winner would be the MAW talent (heel of course, because I would have Strong retain the title)...my thinking would either be Cattley if he's not in the title match or Citizen X.

MAW v. Unemployed

Unemployed v. Trade

MAW v. MAW

MAW v. Trade

Then

winner 1 v. winner 4

winner 2 v. winner 3

then Finals.

I like what Midnightnick posted but I would go with only maybe two non-MAW spots. Why give the chance to four people, when people who work in the company could use those spots to help their careers?

The second unemployed spot could always go to a normal MAW wrestler, though I'd book it as one of the unemployed who loses, stays on contract, comes back a few months down the line, angry that they didn't fairly get a chance.

Both, Midnightnick and Tigerkinney seem to be thinking on the same wavelength as me.

When booking the RCI, I also went with a nice eight man tournament with a mixture of MAW regulars and talent trades to give it that big tournament feel. As for the participates, I had two guidelines that I wanted to follow. First, I wanted to make sure that the defending tournament champion, James "Mainstream" Hernadnez, was involved in the 2008 RCI tournament. And 2nd, I wanted to make sure that each of the five promotions that MAW has working agreements were represented in the tournament (CZCW, FCW, NYCW, PSW, and USPW). Thankfully, one of these five promotions, FREEDOM Championship Wrestling, is home to Mainstream Hernandez so I can kill two birds with one stone. The remaining three spots of course will be filled by three of MAW's finest. (Note: Out of the non-MAW representatives, two of them were signed to ppa contracts, while the other three were trade trades).

For the structure of the tournament I went in a slightly different direction. While I also had each of the eight men fight at the beginning in singles competition, I changed things up a bit with a Four Way Elimination match to decide the winner (instead of continuing the tournament with more singles matches). The reason for this is a lack of time. Like Tigerkinney, I also planned on having both the Mid Atlantic Championship and the Mid Atlantic Tag Team title matches to fill out the card and if I would have gone down the path of a traditional knockout tournament I would of had to cut time to either the RCI finals or the Mid Atlantic Championship match.

BHK1978 brought up a good question on why you would give so many spots to non-MAW wrestlers. From my point of view it all has to do with the current balance of the face/heel divide (or the lack their of). With so few faces on the roster (one of which being the Mid Atlantic Champion), you are going to have to bring in some outside help unless you want to get hit for a couple of heel/heel matchups. One of the best and quickest ways to do this is of course talent trades and/or the hiring of outside talent.

The alternative way of getting round the lack of time problem, is that you could have always extended the length of the show from two hours to two and a half. The extra half hour would be enough time to not make every match feel rushed.

The alternative way of getting round the lack of time problem, is that you could have always extended the length of the show from two hours to two and a half. The extra half hour would be enough time to not make every match feel rushed.

I agree with TK. Most of the tourney shows that I've attended or watched on DVD have been noticably longer than a regular show, even compared to some supershows that ran around the same time. Look at the TPI, which even split into two nights was an epic event. I went to an ROH show (maybe the Pure Title Tournament) that was right around four hours long.

For you to jump to two and a half hours, with the talent to cover it of course, should be a given.

Also, so as not to double post, I caught up on this today as I make my way trying to get current on some favorites that I've fallen way behind on (TK's FCW, Self's FCK, and Phantom Stranger's TCW) and I must say I'm enjoying it, both conceptually and with the actual meat of the diary. Kudos, man. Keep it up. :)

Thanks for the compliment No Neck. Always glad to hear when people are enjoying the diary. Hopefully I can keep everyone interested as I switch gears to the 2nd chapter.

And I thought about extending the show for another half hour, but didn't do it for a couple of reasons. The main one was that I wanted to change things as little as possible. Even though I have a good amount of veteran writers as readers (including the both of you ), the diary is still meant to be a bit tutorial to new readers. I also saw that besides "Where It All Begins Again" every single MAW event were set to run for 90 minutes. So the event is longer than the usual MAW show to begin with. Running the event this way also helps get around the face/heel divide problem because I only need to have one of the faces or heels going into the finals to make sure the match isn't penalize. Finally, there are slight stamina concerns that would force my hand with match-ups and when each participant would need to go out of the tournament.

I like crazy tournaments, so I would be less scientific. So, there might be...

2 vs. 10

3 vs. 9

4 vs. 8

5 vs. 7

What about 1 and 6 you ask? The first seed is the Champion, Erik Strong, so he gets a bi. The 6th seed is determined by a Battle Royal! The second round looks like this:

1 vs. 6

2/10 vs. 5/7

3/9 vs. 4/8

The winners of those rounds advance, for a total of 3 semi finalists. The losers of these matches are entered into a Three Way Dance. The winner of that is the fourth slot in the Semis. So, the Semis look like this...

1/6 vs. Winner of Loser's Lottery Triple Threat Match

2/10 vs. (3/9 or 4/8)

Obviously the winners of those matches fight it out for the title. I probably shouldn't right brackets when I'm this hopped up on sugar...

That certainly is a crazy set up. Might not use that set up ever for a one day tournament, but it's could be interesting in a format in general.

Chapter #1

The 0/0/0 Promotion or How I Learn To Love Dusty Bin

Supplemental Handout #1: Preview of The 3rd Annual Rip Chord Invitational

When I set up the schedule I planned on talking about the structure of the MAW card and why I chose to do what I did. However, I pretty much covered up all of that through conversation on the open discussion question. So instead I am going take this moment to bring back a staple of my NYCW diaries, the old school fight card poster (Ok, so it's really a flyer in the style of an old school fight card. What are you going to do about it, sue me? :p). For those of you with a solid image editing program like Adobe Photoshop, these really aren't that hard to make (especially once you get a good template set up) and can add that little extra bit of flair to a diary.

It's kind of fitting that I'd first use it in this diary for a MAW event since my inspiration for doing these posters/flyers came from the man who made MAW popular, shipshirt. The year was 2006. The day was December 24th. The diary was MAW: Back to Basics (A C-Verse '07 Diary). I'm Casey Kasum, no James Heatly, no Antho...

I'm Foolinc telling you to keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.

Post Match Angle

After the match, Casey Valentine's stable mates Mean Jean Cattley and Ricky Douglas dart from the back and head straight for Cameron Vessey. Over the past few months, the young son of Larry Vessey has been trying join his tag team partner and become a member of MAW's top stable, The Firm. However, for some reason unknown to the fans Mean Jean Cattley has been hesitant to accept the second generation superstar instead forcing him to a number of demeaning tasks that Cattley has called hazing. Grabbing Vessey by his shirt, Mean Jean gives what has to be yet another order to Cameron, but this time it looks like Vessey isn't going to take it anymore and stuns the audience by shoving The Mean Machine to the mat. After moment of stunned silence MJC barks to Casey and Douglas to restrain Cameron as he grabs a microphone.

Mean Jean Cattley: You were so close you stupid son of a bitch! Since the moment you stepped into a MAW ring all you said was how much you wanted to join The Firm. And after months of hazing rituals you refuse now? Do you think that all of this is above a punk like you? Who the hell you do you think you are!?

Cameron Vessey: You're damn right I think I'm above this. I'm a freaking Vessey!

After Vessey's outburst Cattley gets right into the face of the restrained 20 year old, forehead to forehead, and tell Cameron Vessey one word that no one in Stanley Hall was expecting.

Mean Jean Cattley: Good.

Cracking a smirk, Mean Jean Cattley slowly backs up and then continues his speech.

Mean Jean Cattley: To be a member of The Firm you must not just be above the unwashed masses, you must know it. And tonight, young Vessey, you have proven to me that you are above the rest of these losers. Congratulations, you are now one of us.

With Jean's speech done and over with, the leader of The Firm sticks out his hand while Ricky Douglas and Casey Valentine let go of Vessey. Still irate from the situation, the now free Cameron gets right up to the man that has been making his life miserable for the past couple of months pulls his fist back and looks to unload on Mean Jean Cattley. Vessey looks slowly at Valentine and Douglas to make sure they aren't going to jump him before shaking Mean Jean's hand? The fans boo as it is now clear that Cameron Vessey has join The Firm.

Post Match Angle

As with the past two years, Rip Chord comes out from the back to personally hand the RCI Trophy to the winner of the Rip Chord Invitational Tournament. And like the past two years that man is none other than a man that Rip personally can't stand, Mainstream Hernandez.

Rip Chord: James, I don't know how you do it. For three years I've held this invitational and for three years you've knocked down all the competition set in front of you. I guess all I have left to say to you before I let you go back to Puerto Rico is congratulations.

Mainstream Hernandez: Go back to Puerto Rico? Duuude, the Mainstream Nation spans across the entire world. My awesomeness cannot be contained by just one promotion. Besides, last time I checked the winner of this here cup has always gotten a title match with the champ? And the only thing I'd love more than to take that title away from that corporate goon Cattley is to take it away from my best bud, Erik Strong. I'm back baby!

Hernandez jumps out of the ring and slaps hands with the Stanley Hall faithful as Rip Chord looks like he's about to be physically ill.

Rating: D-

Post-Match Angle

As Marv Earnest gives the verdict of a time limit draw all eyes are on the challenger, Mean Jean Cattley, to see what he's going to do. In a bit of a surprise the former champion is fairly reserved for just failing to capture the top prize in all of the Mid Atlantic. The frustration on his face can be seen from a mile away, but there is no outburst at the referee, no sneak attack on Erik Strong, nothing. All Cattley does is make his way to the back while the champion celebrates is title defense with the fans.

After MJC's exit, Strong's long time friend, tag team partner, and now the new number one contender James "Mainstream" Hernandez comes out trophy in hand. The duo embrace to the delight of the crowd and Mainstream motions to Strong to go to the top turnbuckle, most likely to perform their signature stereo back flips for the fans. However as Strong turns his back, Mainstream takes his RCI trophy, lifts it high above his head, and smashes it on the back of Erik's head. The impact sends the champion crashing to the mat as the crowd sits in stunned silence at the event that just happen. Grinning wildly, Hernandez picks up Strong's Mid Atlantic Championship and raises both the title and the now dented RCI trophy into the air in victory.

Rating: F+

Notes: The segment was weak and bombed with the crowd.
