TNA's New Beginnings II

Recommended Posts

PRE SHOW

In a bout that had solid in-ring action but not much in the way of heat, Hernandez defeated Robert Roode in 7:36 by pinfall with a Dominator. D

Impact

Saturday, week 3, June 2003

Draddy Gym, New York City

Live on Sci Fi.

Impact kicks off backstage where Backstreet Boyz are sitting in the locker room, discussing plans to try and overcome the monstrous team of Abyss and Vader. Johnny Kashmere has a light bulb moment and asks the cameraman to leave. B

We go to a much plusher locker room which is backstage home to Jeff Jarrett. He speaks about Slammiversary too, his title defence against American Dragon. He tells Dragon he will defeat him at the big event as all he has seen Dragon do with him so far is brawl. B-

Abyss v Johnny Kashmere

Whatever Kashmere's idea was, it did not transpire in this singles match. Like Acid last week, he put up a good fight and would not lie down, but Abyss just proved to be too big and too strong again, overcoming one half of the Tag Team Champions in 6:57 by pinfall with The Black Hole. C-

Travis Morton is backstage interviewing Ernest Miller who taunts Steve Corino ahead of their contest at Slammiversary, calling him a "life time lackey". D+

http://www.obsessedwithwrestling.com/pictures/n/necrobutcher/02.jpg

Backstage again and Mike Sanders enters Necro Butcher's lockerroom which more resembles a room the morning after a stag/batchelor party. Sanders is disgusted with the state of the room but nonetheless makes Necro an offer... Sanders says he has been impressed with Necro's attitude since he has come into TNA and offers to teach him how to become a wrestler in a big league. Necro gladly accepts before glugging on some beer and smashing the empty can into his head. Sanders says that is one thing that needs to stop. E+

Full Blooded Italians v Pride of Britain

Match two of the end of the first year is a solid tag team contest despite Little Guido being off form. Williams and Wolfe have taken some time to find their footing in TNA but have done so of late and look like they have a decent future with the company. They won this tag affair in 7:27 when Desmond Wolfe defeated Tony Mamaluke by pinfall with a Crowning Glory. C-

Sid Vicious cuts a promo on Buff Bagwell. He tells Buff that we will see just how lucky Sid was back on Explosion and who kicks the crap out of who come tomorrow night. Sid has a strong feeling he will be the one walking out of the ring. C

Ken Shamrock is next to speak, he will be more than happy to beat an admission out of BG James that he is behind the unwanted, bizarre gifts, if that is what he has to do. C

Trent Acid v Vader

A very good match, which I have to admit is a surprise, and one where Trent Acid looked excellent. He has come on leaps and bounds since entering TNA as a relative unknown and his future must be bright judging on performances like this. He was not afraid of the big man and to his enormous credit was looking the more likely winner when out came Abyss, followed quickly by Johnny Kashmere as the match descended into chaos and a double disqualification in 9:15. B-

The show comes back down to Earth as a boring segment is aired where So Cal Val and Spanish Announce Team are conspiring to get one over the Dragons. E

Roger Bagwell is backstage with husband Buff and Alex Wright. Buff and Alex are arguing over Roger, about how Buff treats him and how Alex is supposedly carrying on with him behind Buff's back. Both deny what the other is alledging and ignoring Roger's pleas to stop. Roger makes them stop by banging on a locker before slapping them both in the face and leaving. No bum sex for either of you guys tonight! C-

Jeff Jarrett & Mike Sanders v Buff 'The Puff' Bagwell & Alex Wright (without Roger) v Dragons v Sid Vicious & Rick Steiner

Surprisingly a match where there was much order throughout, other than Buff's and Alex's continued bickering which led to Buff walking out of the match, audibly telling Alex he "can't deal with this crap any more". Fortunately for Alex Wright this was a four way tag match, otherwise he would have had his arse/ass handed to him. Sid still showed some ring rust but he took the match for he and Steiner in 13:48 when he pinned Sanders after a ring shaking powerbomb. C-

Following the match, Jeff Jarrett and American Dragon share an intense staredown ahead of their huge title match tomorrow night, but neither comes to blows. C+

Air Paris and CM Punk are talking backstage, where the plot villainous acts against Desmond Wolfe and Doug Williams. D+

Non Title match

CM Punk v Ken Shamrock

This had potential to be an outstanding match, but unfortunately the two don't seem to gel together in the ring and the match suffered because of it despite the crowd being very much into it. Air Paris came to the ring and interfered on Punk's behalf, but this wasn't enough to win for Punk as he lost in 14:01 by submission to an Ankle Lock. C-

To close Impact, Mike Tenay, Don West and Potter run through the Slammiversary card, concentrating more on the three championship matches and Sid versus Buff Bagwell. C

Show rating: C-

The show can be considered a success and should increase TNA's popularity.

Attendance: 2000 (sellout)

TV rating: 0.61 (new TNA record)

Loss: $44,519

I was impressed and excited about the last show. The angles were popping and the matches clicking. Looks on things could be on the upswing so only can hope the big PPV delivers some record numbers!

NWA TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Jeff Jarrett (champion) v American Dragon (C heat)

I think Danielson will push Jarrett to the limit and become a major star in the process. However, Jeff retains the title and perhaps sets up a rematch down the road (next PPV if Sid's ring rust still tarnishes him)

NWA TNA TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Backstreet Boyz (champions) v Abyss & Vader ©

as the last couple shows proved, this team has come into their own. They are new break out stars for your TNA. Abyss and Vader have not communicated well as of late and we could see their implosion during this match to set up their big feud.

TNA X DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

CM Punk (champion) v Desmond Wolfe (D+)

pepsis for the winner

Ernest Miller v Steve Corino (D)

kill the cat! how many lives does he have left? Corino is another guy who can help carry the program on top and has proven it time and time again. Cat is fine for some midcard entertainment and hopefully he's helping to train some of the new guys. King Corino though is due for a title run in the near future (some title)

SIX MAN TAG

America's Most Wanted v Latin American Exchange (D-)

AMW + Beer Money = gold. Surprised the heat rating is not higher the match with all the antics in recent weeks/months.

Doug Williams v Frankie Kazarian v Shane Douglas v Super Crazy (E)

Want to go with Kaz, but his debut was less than spectacular. Douglas has a little mileage left and like to see get in the middle of some major stories for a good little run.

Ken Shamrock v Air Paris (D+)

again would like to see Paris pull the upset, but Shamrock is one of the solid rocks atop the roster. Do you have a top 10 ranking by the way? Maybe Paris will earn some respect by giving Ken a decent match.

Alex Wright v Rick Steiner (D+)

since we could lose Buff soon due to Steroid abuse, like to see Alex get a major win and boost his status. Plus by beating the guy Buff lost to, it adds to their rivalry. Bagwell will pout, Alex will gloat - Roger will stuck in the middle (I don't know - maybe he likes it that way ). Would expect a decent match rating.

Mike Sanders, Necro Butcher & 'Dr Death' Steve Williams v Chris Candido, 'Alpha Male' Monty Brown & Ultimo Dragon (E+)

ok, Necro has been a good jobber for you, Dr Death can't appear on tv due to commits in Japan, so here's a chance for Candido to get a win over his rival Sanders. If you had Douglas instead of Dragon on the team, they would comprise a decent version of the Triple Threat team

Buff 'The Puff' Bagwell v Sid Vicious ©

Sid had to keep winning to get him ready for a title match with jarrett. Buff is on his 3rd strike.

Spanish Announce Team v Jody Fleisch & Harry Smith (E)

Paul London v Vampiro (E+)

no build-up for the match but possible show stealer. Should help Vampiro as he moves up the ladder. I can see Vampiro having some great matches with American Dragon and CM Punk down the road for the X title

Devon Storm v Ken Anderson (E+)

Mr Anderson chalks up a W. He's been way too quiet of late.

Olympia - I have no top ten, but have toyed with doing some sort of rankings.

I kept an unofficial one in my old MidSouth days. I sorted the wrestling roster based on momentum then tweaked it a little. the sort was pretty much dead on to start with though with where I thought folks should be. It was always fun going thru the other leagues too and mocking up a top 10 for each of them based on their win/loss results. That was a lot of work though.

Looking forward to the PPV results

NWA TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Jeff Jarrett (champion) v American Dragon (C heat)

For better or worse, I loooooove Jarrett. Must be a man crush...or a bromance

NWA TNA TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Backstreet Boyz (champions) v Abyss & Vader ©

This would have been a great real life tag team. As good as the Backstreets have been for you in your TNA, there's something about them I just don't like.

TNA X DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

CM Punk (champion) v Desmond Wolfe (D+)

Punk deserves a nice long reign. He has so much upward mobility, there's no need to rush it.

Ernest Miller v Steve Corino (D)

Somebody call his momma!

SIX MAN TAG

America's Most Wanted v Latin American Exchange (D-)

Tough to call, I love both these teams, man. Flip of the coins says AMW

Doug Williams v Frankie Kazarian v Shane Douglas v Super Crazy (E)

Deadly doug dishes out some serious chaos theory

Ken Shamrock v Air Paris (D+)

When Shamrocks in the zone, he's IN THE ZONE!

Alex Wright v Rick Steiner (D+)

Alex is a solid hand, hope he goes over here.

Could be an awesome little match. I like all six of these guys but Candido gets my vote every time

Lets hope he's lost some of his legendary rust!

PRE SHOW

In a match that had some good action and average heat, Elix Skipper defeated Sheik Abdul Bashir in 7:02 by pinfall with a Play Of The Day. The two didn't click. D+

http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_pictures/north_america/united_states/louisiana/new_orleans_lakefront.jpg

Kiefer Lakefront Arena, New Orleans, LA.

A video plays recapping the lead up to tonight's main event between Jeff Jarrett and American Dragon, at the end of which the Slammiversary logo is displayed. C

Pyrotechnics go off and the crowd are hot... well those that are here. The turn out is somewhat disappointing as there are around 3000 empty seats in the Kiefer Lakefront Arena. Young Travis Morton is enjoying the biggest moment of his young life so far... he on ring announce duty for the evening and he introduces tonight's first special guest to play in the big event... it's Florence and the Machine...

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="

name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="
type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Florence gets the love from the crowd and Mike Tenay, Don West and Potter welcome TNA's fans to their first birthday extravaganza.

Jody Fleisch & Harry Smith v Spanish Announce Team (with So Cal Val)

Mmmm... who has the reddest hair... Val or Florence?

http://www.brutaltruthradio.com/So%20Cal%20Val-TNA.jpg

Anyway, we head into the opening match which is rather disappointing. SAT had been looking good of late and while they were much too strong for their British opponents, the match was rather mediocre and given the big introduction tonight's show has received, things must improve. SAT took this one in 7:08 when Jose Maximo defeated Harry Smith by pinfall with a Maximo Explosion. D

Doug Williams v Frankie Kazarian v Shane Douglas v Super Crazy

Straight into the second match which thankfully is a significant improvement on the first. All four men are at completely different points in the TNA careers. Doug Williams has been ever improving along with his tag team partner Desmond Wolfe. Kazarian has not featured much but Eric Bischoff sees potential in him and has his eyes on him. Douglas has struggled to get going but has shown recent signs of his former self from ECW fame while Crazy has been virtually non existant. This showed in the match where he was eager to impress. All four men put in a good performance. One would imagine Eric Bischoff would not have been too impressed with the finish though which came in 11:40 when Shane Douglas defeated Frankie Kazarian by pinfall with a Franchiser. Williams pounded the mat in frustration at Douglas' win while Crazy looked disappointed. C-

Devon Storm v Ken Anderson

It's total nonstop action in TNA... er... well... it does what it says on the tin. The third match is already here despite the four hour show being less than half an hour old. This third match saw some decent wrestling but little in the way of crowd interest which was a shame. Their good quality of wrestling though on such a big show does suggest the two could be utilised usefully by TNA in the future. Anderson pulls out a win in 7:39 by pinfall while using the ropes for leverage. C-

A video is shown to promote Paul London. C

Paul London v Vampiro

A contrast here as one of the most exciting in terms of speed wrestling and one of the darkest characters square off. The mix made for a good match and produced some great action that the crowd got into. Both men scored a few near falls but it was the dark vampire Vampiro that cut his teeth into victory in 9:40 by pinfall with a Nail in the Coffin. We're on the up... C+

'Alpha Male' Monty Brown, Chris Candido & Ultimo Dragon v Mike Sanders, 'Everybody's Favourite' Necro Butcher & 'Dr Death' Steve Williams

'Everybody's Favourite' turned into 'Everybody thinks he was the worst performer in this match'. The fans in the arena were verbal in what they thought as they booed the hell out of him. Sorry guys, they're the facts. Thankfully, everybody else did their bit in the match and pulled it through. Sanders' brain and Williams brawn and experience proved to be a potent ****tail as the heels largely deviously prevailed in 7:02 when Mike Sanders defeated 'Alpha Male' Monty Brown by pinfall with a 3.0. D+

A video is shown highlighting America's Most Wanted's best moments of TNA's first year. C+

America's Most Wanted (with Dawn Marie) v Latin American Exchange

After Harris and Storm met Homicide and Hernandez to crown the first Tag Team Champions in TNA, a little under a year later and things are a little different. No gold at stake and no Homicide... instead we have Estrada and Konnan with the big Hernandez while Robert Roode is at the side of Storm and Harris. Matches involving these of late have been somewhat of a mixed bag, some good, some bad and some indifferent. This was one of the better ones, helped by a lot of action with six men eager to have at each other. It was America who were cheering in 13:40 when 'Cowboy' James Storm defeated Jorge Estrada by pinfall with a Top Rope Bulldog. C-

PART TWO...

Travis Morton introduces our second special guest of the evening... Dizzee Rascal...

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="

name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="
type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Money falls from the ceiling at the end of the performance much to the crowd's delight. Sadly Ted DiBiase is not on hand to cackle at them as they realise the money is fake.

Joel Gertner is with Air Paris backstage, who talks about his upcoming match with Ken Shamrock. This was worse than watching Necro wrestle! E+

Ernest Miller v Steve Corino

Two of TNA's dependables meet and have a dependable match. Good but not great. Solid and not bad. It was an open bout and an important one as both are better than the midcard but neither have established themselves in the upper echelons of the company. Corino got the win here but not in the manner that will please the watching TNA officials in 13:47 by pinfall by a handful of Miller's tights. C-

Ken Shamrock cuts a promo on Air Paris, saying that he will use him as practice to prepare to obliterate BG James at a later date. Much more interesting than Paris talking to Gertner before and much more interesting than I have just written it. C-

Air Paris v Ken Shamrock

A really good match with some great action and some great crowd heat, though primarily for Shamrock. Paris fought valiantly in this match and there were times when he had Shamrock in trouble. However, the difference in class and experience showed... though Paris will without doubt get better in time. Shamrock's hard earned victory was in 15:10 by submission with an Ankle Lock, though it took Paris some time to eventually tap. C+

Rick Steiner cuts a promo on Alex Wright where he rips into him, though not in the same sense he alledgedly rips into Roger Bagwell. He tells him he makes him sick, as not only is he a faggot, he is also a gay slut. Good job this is on pay per view, I don't think Sci Fi would have liked that! C-

http://www.onlineworldofwrestling.com/images/belts/x.jpg

TNA X DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

CM Punk (champion) v Desmond Wolfe

Wolfe has been the target of Punk and Paris in recent weeks and not only does he have a chance to extract some revenge, he also has the opportunity to win his first championship in TNA. Punk was rocksteady in his first reign as champion and wasn't even directly defeated when he lost it. Early signs are his second reign will be equally impressive. This match was impressive too and Wolfe, fuelled by his desire for revenge hit Punk with some stiff shots. The two produced some solid wrestling and counter wrestling with a couple of very good periods of submission wrestling. Wolfe came up short though as Punk prevailed in 17:44 by pinfall with a Pepsi Plunge. CM Punk makes defence number 2 of his TNA X Division title. C

The camera cuts backstage where Abyss is warming up by headbutting the locker room wall. Vader is nowhere to be seen. C+

Alex Wright (with Roger Bagwell) v Rick Steiner

Interestingly Roger Bagwell accompanied Alex Wright to the ring... you can bet that this won't go down well with husband Buff. The match was a little disappointing, but Wright was punching above his weight at this level so that contributed. Steiner looked comfortable for the most part and wasn't troubled much by his German opponent and gave him a spanking at one point for good measure... which was to the chagrin of Roger who probably felt a little jealous. Steiner took the expected triumph in 12:01 by pinfall with a Belly to Belly Suplex. D+

Joel Gertner is backstage with Sid Vicious, who scowls and spits a lot. No change there. He vows to destroy Buff Bagwell on his road to destroying Jeff Jarrett. D-

http://www.100megsfree4.com/wiawrestling/graphics/TNATAG.jpg

NWA TNA TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Backstreet Boyz (champions) v Abyss & Vader

The Boyz have their work cut out against the monsters in a regular match, having won the titles for a second time in a ladder match. This is the return bout. Abyss and Vader dominate the early going, but then appear to be hampered by communication issues. This allowed the Boyz in and they used ultra slick, cohesive teamwork to take down first Abyss and then Vader. The champions were visibly shocked and thrown off their game plan and the champions made the most of this, staying on top of Abyss with quickness and double teams. This led to a surprise victory (despite them being the champions) in 14:13 when Johnny Kashmere defeated Abyss by pinfall with a Backstreets Back. Backstreet Boyz make defence number 3 of their NWA TNA World Tag Team titles. After the match, Abyss and Vader got into a shoving match as Abyss felt Vader should have helped more and Vader felt Abyss has let him down by losing. The shoving ends in a stalemate and the two don't come to blows. C-

Yeah, but still, going well on the whole, thanks Jay.

I'm not going to post up the final part tonight. I've had a few beers after playing in the Bellis Kendall Tankards today, an open competition at Conwy Golf Club on the North Wales coast. The last thing I want to do right now is think too much! I'll have to do it tomorrow.

Quick question. The Backseat Boyz, now I've always been a big fan of them, but I wouldn't ever push them as a team because of Trent Acid's hard drug problem. Just wondering how you got around it or if you just pushed them anyway?

PART THREE...

Jeff Jarrett speaks from his office, telling American Dragon that despite all the brawling in recent weeks, he will prove to the world he is the superior wrestler tonight. C

Travis Morton welcomes back our special guests... Dizzee Rascal and Florence and the Machine.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="

name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="
type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

The crowd cheer at the end of the performance but Dizzee and Florence are surprised when it turns into boos...

http://images.sodahead.com/polls/000354181/polls_buff_bagwell_2938_897213_poll_xlarge.jpeg

Buff Bagwell has appeared on stage and pushes over one of the harps. Florence goes ballistic - she loves those harps and they're not cheap - even going as far as slapping Buff in the face. This maddens Buff who gets in her face only for Dizzee Rascal to come to her rescue. He gets repaid by getting punched in the jaw by Buff and there is pandemonium on the stage...

http://www.championshipwrestlingonline.com/images/halloween/halloween_pyschosid.jpg

Sid Vicious then comes out and grabs hold of Buff Bagwell and starts beating on him. E+

Buff 'The Puff' Bagwell (with Roger Bagwell) v Sid Vicious

Sid controls the early stages of the match, thanks to giving Buff a good beating from the stage down to the ring. Roger Bagwell comes out to ringside and this distracts Sid, and Buff takes advantage with a low blow. He then assumes control for sometime, but poses one too many times, enabling Sid to level him with a clothesline. This prompts Roger to enter the ring and jump on Sid's back. Hormones get the better of him though when he realises his crotch on Sid's ass and he starts to hump. Sid not surprisingly is angered, he backs Roger into the corner before delivering a Vicious Powerbomb. Fortunately for Roger, Buff was still down and didn't see Roger's humping, or he'd have probably done similar to his husband.

Sid stayed strong for the remainer of the match despite a couple of short rallies by Buff. In the end the victory was picked up in 18:40 by pinfall with a Vicious Powerbomb. Will it be Jarrett next for Sid? D+

As we wait for the match between American Dragon and Jeff Jarrett to commence, Mike Tenay, Don West and Potter run us through the Tale Of The Tape. C

NWA TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Jeff Jarrett (champion) v American Dragon

The crowd were enthralled by an encounter between two of TNA's better technical wrestlers, and it was expected to be a match to remember. While it certainly didn't disappoint, it didn't quite live up to what was hoped of it. The vast majority of the long match was spent mat wrestling and the two did put on a good display of mat wrestling, something which does tend to short of in today's wrestling industry. For a long time, it was difficult to see who would come out on top, the pair were evenly matched. As the match wore on, Jarrett became frustrated with not being able to put Dragon away and started to resort to cheap shots. This earned him warnings from the referee who stopped short in disqualifying him knowing that it would not benefit Dragon in he wouldn't win the title and that all the fans wanted to see a definative outcome.

This did come in favour of Jeff Jarrett in 36:32 by pinfall with The Stroke. Jeff Jarrett makes defence number 8 of his NWA TNA World Heavyweight title while American Dragon is applauded for his efforts in a memorable, but not outstanding bout. C+

I'm so happy Buff the Puff survived the drug test drama (wonder if he managed to sneak Alex's pee in or something -- sure there is a storyline there somewhere). At least all the interesting items you've been building up with them will be allowed to continue now.

I'll do something thinking on the new character. If anyone has insights or suggestions, feel free to PM me
