TNA's New Beginnings II

Recommended Posts

I haven't posted a preview for this show as I was able to write it up in the game while waiting a significant time for a meeting at work today, so I've written it straight up at home tonight.

PRE SHOW

In a match that had some good action but not much in the way of heat, Robert Roode defeated TJ Wilson in 6:33 by pinfall with a Northern Lariat. The two didn't click at all. D

Explosion

Desmond Wolfe v EZ Money

Despite a lack of psychology on show and the match not flowing properly, this was still a very well received opening contest with a surprise outcome, as Money upset the Brit in 7:02 by pinfall, illegally using the ropes for leverage. Decent showing from both men. C

The cameras go backstage where Abyss is seen warming up. It's not your usual stretching or push up routine... Abyss is punching lockers and the walls of his locker room. His fists are bright red when he is done, but there are dents everywhere. C+

Air Paris v Satoshi Kojima

The second match was even better than the first as the well known Paris and the rising Kojima showcased everything good about the X Division. If both of them, even Kojima in defeat, can maintain this level of performance, then they will both be serious threats to current champion Christopher Daniels. Paris' recent upturn continued as he dispatched Kojima in 12:01 by pinfall with a Moonsault Press. C+

Backstage and we see Sid Vicious, hissing loudly that he will kick Sean Waltman's head off and power bomb him through the ring. D-

TNA X DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

'Fallen Angel' Christopher Daniels (champion) v Masato Tanaka

The X Division bows out for the evening with a third match of considerable quality and shows that TNA have something that their rivals seem to lack - a thoroughly entertaining division no limits not weight limits. While Tanaka is not your usual style of X Division wrestler, he certainly gave Daniels much trouble with his no nonsense hard hitting style. Daniels used his brains and his speed to overcome his Japanese opponent and retain in 9:56 by pinfall with a Last Rites. Christopher Daniels makes defence number 4 of his TNA X Division title. C

We go backstage for another promo, but this time Jeff Jarrett is laughing at Desmond Wolfe's defeat to EZ Money earlier in the night, saying if Wolfe can't beat Money, then he has a snowball's chance in hell against him. C-

AJ Styles, New Dawn (Caprice Coleman & Jimmy Rave) & Steve Corino v AK-47 (Austin Aries & Kid Kash), Bryan Danielson & Ken Shamrock

The first of two eight man tag team matches tonight and unusually for such a match, this was a controlled, technical match and given the wrestlers involved was all the better for it. Both sides have their share of the match and all eight men were able to show what they are capable of. In the end, it was the heels who won in 13:32 when Ken Shamrock defeated Jimmy Rave by submission with an Ankle Lock. C+

We return backstage where Mike Sanders addresses CM Punk. He says he will bring the World Heavyweight Championship to The Fringe and finally The Fringe will be a focal point of TNA. C

NWA TNA TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Ernest Miller & Shane Douglas (champions) v Full Blooded Italians (Little Guido & Tony Mamaluke)

Not as good as previous encounters involving these teams, but passable nonetheless. Given the standard of earlier bouts though, it was a little bit of a let down. Miller and Douglas again got the better of the FBI in 14:49 when Shane Douglas defeated Little Guido by pinfall with a Franchiser. Miller & Douglas make defence number 4 of their NWA TNA World Tag Team titles. C-

We are backstage where CM Punk acknowledges he is in the biggest week of his life. He has beaten Ernest Miller on Impact, and he now has to go through Mike Sanders, Shane Douglas and Abyss to stay as World Championship. He questions Dusty Rhodes' motives, doubting he wants Punk as champion so he can get better ratings. Only Punk can do a one man promo on four different people and get away with it! C

Abyss (with Harley Race), Jeff Jarrett, Jorge Estrada & Sean Waltman v Buff 'The Puff' Bagwell, Doug Williams, Jerry Lynn & Sid Vicious

The second eight man tag and this was far more chaotic and wilder than the first one, and didn't quite match the quality of the earlier one as a result. Unusually, Buff didn't perform up to his usual standards and Estrada punished him for it, while Sean Waltman did everything he could to stay away from Sid Vicious. He succeeded. By the time the end came, Buff's under performance put pay to his team's chances in 16:03 when Abyss defeated Jerry Lynn by pinfall with The Black Hole. C

As we wait for the match between CM Punk and Mike Sanders to commence, Tenay and Potter run us through the Tale Of The Tape. C

NWA TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

CM Punk (champion) v Mike Sanders

Boy did Sanders step up to the plate and this turned out to be an excellent match. Some great wrestling drew some great heat from the crowd, who were firmly behind Punk. This also fed Sanders as he wrestled probably the match of his life in pursuit of TNA's biggest prize. This kind of match was exactly what Punk didn't need and although he did manage to get the better of Sanders, just, you wonder what he has left to face first Shane Douglas and then possibly Abyss. Punk's win was in 17:02 by pinfall with a Pepsi Plunge. CM Punk makes defence number 8 of his NWA TNA World Heavyweight title. B-

Show rating: C

The show can be considered a success and should increase TNA's popularity.

A number of angles did not reach the standard of the in ring action.

Attendance: 7150

Buy rate: 0.48 (equals Explosion record)

Profit: $117,811 (new Explosion record)

Explosion was TNA's 8th best show in history.

CM Punk v Mike Sanders was TNA's 9th best match in history.

Impact preview

One of the busiest weeks in TNA history is also the busiest in CM Punk's career. Tonight is his third title defence potentially of four over a span of 8 days. Can he do the seemingly impossible or will fatigue get the better of him tonight?

Sean Waltman has been shocking the wrestling world by appearing in TNA despite having no contract and whilst under a WWE contract. All sorts of theories are doing the internet news sites, everything from Vince McMahon has sent him to TNA to bring the company down to Waltman is rebelling against WWE. What is known for sure is that Waltman is to put a request to Dusty Rhodes tonight.

Meanwhile, everybody is jostling for position and momentum ahead of No Surrender tomorrow night.

Catch the action on Spike TV on Saturday night.

PRE SHOW

In a bout that had solid in-ring action but not much in the way of heat, Arashi Assassins defeated Middle Eastern Nightmare in 7:54 when Keiji Sakoda defeated Shawn Daivari by pinfall with a Roaring Elbow. D

Impact

Live on Spike TV

Dusty Rhodes and CM Punk are in the ring to start Impact. Punk questions Rhodes' motives, he says he needs Punk to boost ratings but he asks why Rhodes wants him to defend the title four times in eight days. Rhodes says he needs ratings boosts or TNA will risk sliding back just like WWE is and Rhodes knows Punk can deliver. He also knows that if anybody can successfully defend his title four times in eight days it is Punk. Punk says that Super Man wouldn't be able to do that.

Just then, Harley Race and Abyss come to the ring. Punk is attentive and ready but Race and Abyss do not target the champion on this occasion. They instead target Rhodes. Race says he doesn't care about ratings, all he cares about is his monster becoming World Champion. He says that last tme Abyss was robbed as he destroyed CM Punk and didn't win the title on a technicality. Race demands that the rematch has a stipulation added that the title changes hands on a count out or a disqualification, and with Abyss standing inches from him and staring down at him, Rhodes relents and gives them the stipulation. Punk throws his mic down in disgust and leaves the ring. Rhodes looks stressed out. C

We go backstage, where Jerry Lynn thanks the fans for all their support they have given him not only in TNA but throughout his career, as he acknowledges he is entering the twilight stage of his competitive career. D+

Full Blooded Italians v The Young Bucks

An entertaining opening contest where the young Buck brothers showed off some very exciting moves. FBI have too much class though at the moment and came out victorious in 5:51 when Tony Mamaluke defeated Matt Buck by submission with a Sicilian Stretch. C-

AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson are backstage arguing about the beliefs of New Dawn. Styles swears blind by their no drink, no drugs, pure athletic ethics and although Danielson is of similar beliefs, he tells Styles he needs to wise up and live in the real world as professional wrestling isn't like that. Wrestlers do drink and take that and you either have to do it yourself or tolerate others doing it to get anywhere in the business. C-

Desmond Wolfe attacks EZ Money backstage and stomps on him a couple of times for good measure. He says that's a message for Jeff Jarrett as he will get the same treatment tomorrow night. D-

A video plays recapping the long running Mr Wrestling IV versus Vampiro rivalry and previewing their final battle coming soon. C-

Latin American Exchange v Chris Hero & Pride of Britain

A reasonable match and like the previous deciding matches all the wrestlers fought hard as they are representing their countries. LAX showed the slicker teamwork and this propelled Mexico into a best of five semi final clash with Italy in 10:26 when Ultimo Guerrero defeated Pac by pinfall with a Reverse Superplex. C-

Sid Vicious is in the ring starting to cut a promo on Sean Waltman when Waltman comes out. Sid is ready to lay into Waltman right now but Waltman prevents this by stating that as he is not an official TNA employee, should Sid do this he will sue him. Sid relents. He may be angry and mad but he's not stupid. Dusty Rhodes comes out and tells Waltman to get out of the ring as this is a TNA ring and not a WWE ring and the only reason he has agreed that Waltman will face Sid again is so that Sid now knows who he is facing and can rip Waltman's head off, which prompts loud cheers from the crowd and a small "**** off McMahon" chant from one portion. Waltman says he has a proposition. He says that if he wins the match, Dusty Rhodes has to give him a TNA contract but if Sid wins, Waltman will walk away from TNA forever. Rhodes point blank refuses, saying there is no way in hell he will give him a TNA contract as he does not want a long legal battle he will have little chance of winning. He does add one stipulation though... he makes the match no disqualification. Sid has a broad grin and Waltman stomps around the ring livid. D-

Mike Sanders is backstage with the other members of The Fringe. He says he is very happy with the progress they have made since coming together as a group, especially with Mike Quackenbush holding the TV Title for a couple of months. He says The Fringe are now making tracks. D+

Mr Wrestling IV cuts a promo saying how he will take the X Division Championship from Christopher Daniels tomorrow night. C-

Johnny Kashmere v Jose Maximo

Two former well established tag team wrestlers put on a high standard singles match. Kashmere is looking to establish himself following his former Trent Acid leaving TNA while Maximo is looking to reestablish himself following a successful run as X Division and TV Champion. It was Maximo who took the first step (back) upwards as he took a decent match in 9:25 by pinfall with a Maximo Explosion. C

Ken Shamrock cuts a promo backstage where he speaks out against Steve Corino, saying he will snap his ankle tomorrow night. C+

Ernest Miller and Shane Douglas are then seen backstage, saying that tomorrow night America's Most Wanted will be added to the growing list of defeated challengers. D+

Evan Karagias & Satoshi Kojima v The Fringe (Kid Kash & Mike Sanders)

A very good X Division tag team match that was exciting throughout. While The Fringe showed the better team work, Karagias and Kojima gave them a lot of trouble. So much so they won the match courtesy of Kojima. Is this the breakthrough victory he needs? The conclusion came in 12:56 when Satoshi Kojima defeated Kid Kash by pinfall with a Lariat. C

Jeff Jarrett tells Desmond Wolfe he is living in cuckoo land if he thinks getting by him will be as easy as a sneak attack backstage on EZ Money. C+

Backstage and 'Alpha Male' Monty Brown is seen giving Buff 'The Puff' Bagwell a massage. The crowd, Mike Tenay and Potter are shocked as Monty says that he will make sure that Buff is fine to face Latin American Exchange tomorrow night. Buff is lying face down on the massage table with a huge grin on his face and presumably a big stonking erection. B-

NWA TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

CM Punk (champion) v Shane Douglas

A good match that saw greater fan heat than the quality of wrestling. Punk is clearly showing the effects of such a heavy schedule and there were parts of the match where he was beginning to struggle a little. He looked to finish the match early but Douglas is too experienced to be caught short. Punk managed to get by Douglas but looked tired by the end. How will he cope against Abyss tomorrow night in his fourth title defence in eight days? His win here came in 14:31 by pinfall with a Pepsi Plunge. CM Punk makes defence number 9 of his NWA TNA World Heavyweight title. C

Following the match, CM Punk hauls himself up on the ropes and holds the World Championship aloft with his left arm. C

AK-47 v New Dawn

A high quality opening match contested at a fast pace and one where The Fringe, who are very much off the fringe of TNA these days, picked up their biggest win yet by defeating the former Tag Team Champions. The crowd applauded the efforts of all four men as in 10:25 Austin Aries defeated Caprice Coleman by pinfall with a 450° splash. C

Sid Vicious is backstage ready to appear for his match where he hisses that he will take great delight in kicking Sean Waltman's head off. E+

No Disqualification

Sean Waltman v Sid Vicious

Sid was true to his word, right off the bat he tore into Sean Waltman like a man possessed, brutalising his smaller opponent with his greater power and anything he could lay his hands on. Waltman was in serious trouble, not only in the match itself, but his well being.

Then came the turning point. Again, Mike Tenay and Potter are left shocked and outraged on commentary.

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR5nfrcmhqPG7enwwBSzA98u76IjfJvb0ar8fexNv2Bj3kRUqKv

Another wrestler under contract to WWE comes sprinting to the ring and this time it is Teddy Hart. The crowd are initially stunned into silence before large sections start bellowing abuse. In the ring Teddy Hart has completely stunned Sid Vicious and started attacking him brutally with a steel chair. It is some time before Sean Waltman recovers enough to join in but what follows is a reversal of how the match started. Sid is left a battered and blooded match by the time Waltman closes it out in 11:58 by pinfall with a X-Factor. The crowd throw trash in the ring as Waltman and Hart soak up their hatred with delight. D+

Harley Race is in the depths of the building where he builds up the menacing Abyss as TNA's first monstrous World Champion. CM Punk might have something to say about that... C

TNA X DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

'Fallen Angel' Christopher Daniels (champion) v Mr Wrestling IV

The first of three Championship matches at No Surrender and one where Daniels was made to work to have a successful title defence. He did manage to do so in a match that could have been better than it was, winning in 15:22 by pinfall following an Angels Wings. Christopher Daniels makes defence number 5 of his TNA X Division title. C-

A short video is shown highlighting the ability of Jerry Lynn. E+

Jerry Lynn v Mike Sanders

Thankfully Lynn's match against Sanders was received far better than the video package played before it as the two produced some great action in an even contest. Sanders was unable to match the result of his Fringe colleagues earlier in the night as Jerry Lynn took the match in 14:02 by pinfall with a Cradle Piledriver. C+

Ernest Miller and Shane Douglas speak out about their challengers later tonight, America's Most Wanted, saying they are wanted for being criminally bad at wrestling. Oh how people didn't laugh in the arena... E+

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSS9x6o5E2HI2l1LroZ43KhcFZ9Y_YCIsWnkiWN8iF7KtdkgzSM

NWA TNA TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Ernest Miller & Shane Douglas (champions) v America's Most Wanted

The second title match of the evening was very similar to the first, where the challengers made the champions work hard to defend their belts and one where the match perhaps should have been better than it was. Again the champions defended, this time in 14:58 when Ernest Miller defeated 'Cowboy' James Storm by pinfall with a Thrust Kick. Miller & Douglas make defence number 5 of their NWA TNA World Tag Team titles. C-

CM Punk cuts a promo on Harley Race and Abyss, saying the only way Abyss is taking his title is over his dead body. C-

AJ Styles v Bryan Danielson

A highly anticipated match and one which didn't disappoint and had the crowd interested throughout. Styles got the better of Danielson in a highly athletic contest between two men who obviously have huge futures with the company should they wish. AJ's win came in 12:52 by pinfall with a Styles Clash. C+

Jeff Jarrett speaks backstage saying there is no way he is going to be forced off his own TV show in the company he founded and if Desmond Wolfe thinks he will be the man who can, he is more stupid than he looks. C

IF JEFF JARRETT LOSES HE IS OFF TNA TV

Desmond Wolfe v Jeff Jarrett

Jarrett had everything to lose and nothing to gain in his match up and fought like it was the case, largely dominating his ****ney opponent and picking up a straight forward victory in 10:54 by pinfall with The Stroke. Mike Tenay sighs at the conclusion of the match. C

Buff 'The Puff' Bagwell is backstage giving 'Alpha Male' Monty Brown a neck massage. Buff is clearly getting aroused by giving the massage as his face contorts with ecstasy. Brown, oblivious to Bagwell's pleasure, sits there nonplussed. C-

'Alpha Male' Monty Brown & Buff 'The Puff' Bagwell v Latin American Exchange

Buff walks down to the ring behind Monty, sporting an erection and does a few pelvic thrusts in the direction of Monty. Some of the crowd are in hysterics while others are disgusted.

The match itself was hampered by Hernandez under performing and Buff still suffering from injury. Despite this it was a decent enough match and one in which despite injury and erection Buff claimed the win in 13:47 when Buff 'The Puff' Bagwell defeated Jorge Estrada by pinfall with a Buff Blockbuster. C-

Ken Shamrock spoke prior to the penultimate match of the night where he stated he will show Steve Corino no mercy and will snap his ankle. C-

Ken Shamrock v Steve Corino

The two put on a good display of technical and submission wrestling as two old school wrestlers battled each other. Shamrock did not go as far as breaking Corino's ankle but he did make him tap in 19:01 with an Ankle Lock. C

Prior to the main event, Mike Tenay and Potter run through the tale of the tape. C-

NWA TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

TITLE CHANGES HANDS VIA COUNT OUT OR DISQUALIFICATION

CM Punk (champion) v Abyss (with Harley Race)

The stipulation in the match added a new dimension to it, as there were a couple of times when CM Punk nearly lost the title via a count out, mustering every last ounce of strength to haul himself into the ring just before Patrick Hernandez reached ten. Even so, Punk caused his monstrous opponent plenty of difficulty, more than anybody else has in recent months. Punk was worn down though gradually by Abyss, who despite the match drawing to and past the twenty minute mark, displayed impressive levels of stamina for a man of his size. Punk then tried to do the unthinkable and hit Abyss with a form of a Go To Sleep. Punk though, having been given a fair beating by Abyss, was unable to and this ended up leading to the end of the bout in 21:52 by pinfall with The Black Hole. Abyss wins the NWA TNA World Heavyweight title. Abyss celebrates with Harley Race and his new possession, the title belt in the ring, as Punk lies in the ring, beaten and disappointed. Will this result in the New Dawn of TNA coming to an end..? C+

Well done to Kijar and Michgcs. Your prize is to pick a feud each.

Things will be a little difference for the Bound for Glory predictions. Taking inspiration from TNA's real life Bound for Glory series, for the first time in my diary, Impact and Explosion predictions will score too. Here's the rules.

One point for each correct Impact prediction. Usually five matches per card.

Two points for each correct Explosion prediction. Usually seven matches per card.

Three points for each correct Bound for Glory prediction. Will probably be twelve or thirteen matches on this card (four hour pay per view).

There may also be specified bonus points along the way.

Highest points after Bound for Glory wins. Simple.

As Bound for Glory is six game weeks away, there will be lots of predictions to make before then.

The prize, and I will have to make it a big one, will be announced in due course.

Impact preview

Is there a new era in TNA? Is the New Dawn coming to an end? CM Punk was dethroned at No Surrender and TNA has it's first monstrous champion in Abyss. Meanwhile, Sean Waltman has now been joined by Teddy Hart as the two WWE stars continue to run roughshod over Sid Vicious. Is this the beginning of something much bigger and threatening?

In the tag team division, Buff Bagwell and Monty Brown have been making significant progress up the ranks and must soon be in line at a shot at the titles.

Over in the X Division, Christopher Daniels successfully defended but his task at Bound for Glory will be much harder as he is faced with Ultimate X.

Watch the action on Spike TV on Saturday night.
