From the Notebook of Referee Billy

Who Is...

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/CheatinMikeBarstow.jpg

Cheatin' Mike Barstow

Cheatin' Mike Barstow started wrestling in 1964 after graduating from the American School of Wrestling. He debuted as a generic, bland babyface jobber in Gene Plumelli's Championship Wrestling from Boston. Despite his impressive matwork and understanding of the sport, he never really found his niche in North America.

Forced to go abroad to make a living in wrestling, Barstow landed in Japan in the late 1960s, touring with both Burning Hammer of the Wrestling Gods and Golden Combat Grappling. He quickly became a hated gaijinin the Orient, greatly upsetting the normally-reserved Japanese crowd by blantantly cheating in the ring and even stealing from fans at ringside (including a notorious event involving Soba noodles).

In Japan, Barstow developed into a solid technician and well-known grappler and is a two-time holder of the Quest Historical Japan belt. In addition, Barstow and Billy Sanderson have teamed up on numerous occassions, though the duo have yet to win any titles.

Some of professional wrestling's finest live their gimmicks. Cheatin' Mike Barstow is one such individual. Outside the ring, he is just as pretentious and egotistical as his in-ring character. So far in TWL he has been a model citizen, but Stampy is known to keep a short leash on troublemakers.

<em>Billy’s Take</em>: Red Falcon is an excellent young wrestler, but Barstow is a well-known tough guy with a mean streak. Despite Falcon’s breathtaking high-flying maneuvers, Barstow was able to lock in the armbar and force Falcon to submit.</p><p>

<em>Billy’s Take</em>: The strange pairing of Stampy and Luis Montero came out together to a good reaction. I think Stampy is trying to allow some of his popularity and familiarity to rub off on the talented youngster (and to continue to distance Montero from the Reyes clan). In any case, they worked well as a team, despite the chemistry and cohesion shown by their opponents. These four men put on a very good match before Stampy succumbed to a Power Lariat from Lawless to give the Texas Outlaws the victory. </p><p>

Someday you’re gonna be one hell of a wrestler and probably a world champion. But you’re gonna hafta do it on your own. Not,”</span> Stampy spoke over Archie’s protestations, <span style="color:#0000FF;">“because I don’t want you in my corner, but because I’m hangin’ up my boots. That’s right Arch, I’m callin’ her quits. I want to find you a new partner in Team Texas. Someone who can live up to that lofty legacy. So Arch, at Fight to the Finish, I’ll introduce your new partner.” </span>Stampy walked over a gave Archie a big hug before leaving, waving to the fans as he walked backstage. <strong>C</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>“Can’t Miss” Kenny Maynard v. Professor Nero</strong></p><p>

<em>Billy’s Take</em>: Professor Nero apparently requested this match against the young Canadian Kenny Maynard. He may have made a mistake. In the early going, Maynard was in complete control, surprising fans, announcers and, most importantly, Professor Nero himself. It was very evident why Maynard has gained the moniker ‘Can’t Miss.’ But a Nero thumb to the eyes quickly turned the tide and the Professor began wearing down his stronger, larger, and younger opponent. Finally, Nero locked in the Descent into Madness shaking sleeper to put away Maynard, but not before the youngster had impressed everyone with his skills and potential. </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>After the match, <strong>Professor Nero </strong>motioned backstage and his lumbering <strong>Lords of War </strong>appeared, methodically coming down to the ring. Nero whispered something to the two men, who immediately dropped <strong>Kenny Maynard </strong>with a War Machine, nearly decapitating the youngster. Meanwhile, Nero took a microphone. <span style="color:#FF0000;">“A tall, young, Canadian superstar, battered and bruised by the Disciples of Evilness. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it George DeColt? Now I know that you personally trained this insignificant peon,”</span> Nero motioned at the now-prone form of Kenny Maynard. <span style="color:#FF0000;">“But I have to tell you, it doesn’t look like you did a very good job. Apparently you forgot to mention how to block. Or what happens when you challenge fate and face me, the ‘Intelligent Monster’ and my awe-inspiring Lords of War. So take a close look, take a really close look George. Because when I finally get you in the ring, this is exactly what I will do to you!”</span> Nero slapped Maynard hard across the face and laughed maniacally, drawing blood from the split lower lip of the youngster. Nero once again called for the Lords of War to smash Maynard with a ring-shattering War Machine before leading his charges backstage. <strong>B-</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Billy’s Take</em>: There was no chance that I could keep any semblance of control in this match. The mere storyline implications were astounding. Giant Grimsley and Jason Jackson have been going at one another for months. Jason apparently owes the Night Rider some money, upsetting the leather-clad biker. And, most importantly, Edmond Jackson is Jason’s father. All three challengers had something to gain by dethroning the West Coast Warriors. Somewhat surprisingly, that is exactly what happened. When Edmond Jackson had Jason backed into a corner, getting ready to finally lock up with his son. Jason bailed out of the ring, tagging in Eruption, unbeknownst to the Samoan giant. The momentary confusion allowed Edmond to twist Eruption into a pinning predicament and pick up the win, giving us new 6-man champions!</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/TheNightRider.jpg</span><p>

After the match, <strong>The Night Rider </strong>took a microphone. <span style="color:#0000FF;">“That’s right, little J,” </span>the Night Rider pointed at the cowering Jason Jackson. <span style="color:#0000FF;">“I’m on their side now. You don’t wanna pay me? Fine. I’ll find someone else who can make me money. And in my first night on this team, I won gold. That’s a lot more than I ever got working for you. So Jason, it ain’t personal, it’s just business. And right now,”</span> he pointed at his newly-won belt, <span style="color:#0000FF;">“business is good!” </span><strong>C+</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>TWL Tag Team Title Match: Trailer Park Kid/‘Gorgeous’ George DeColt v. Lords of War (Warlord Agony/Warlord Pain) w/Professor Nero ©</strong></p><p>

<em>Billy’s Take</em>: After the earlier attack on Kenny Maynard, George DeColt was nearly incontrollable. Such was his hatred for Professor Nero that he was nearly counted out early in the match while chasing the Intelligent Monster outside the ring. This distraction was just what the Lords of War needed, using their tremendous girth and strength to ground their quicker opponents. The Trailer Park Kid and DeColt finally regained control of the match in the late-going and DeColt looked like he’d won the match, and the tag team titles, after connecting with a DeColt 45 on Pain. But Nero jumped up on the ring apron and DeColt proved unable to keep his cool, dragging the Lords of War’s manager into the ring. I regretfully had to call for the bell and give the Lords of War the win via disqualification while Nero tried to scramble away from the irate DeColt.</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Chief Two Eagles v. Mean Mark Green</strong></p><p>

<em>Billy’s Take</em>: Chief Two Eagles came out first to a deafening roar. If he is not the most popular wrestler in Texas, he is assuredly on the shortlist. He slapped hands with fans at ringside and again handed out a trinket, this time an eagle feather, to a young boy sitting near the entrance ramp. Mean Mark came out confidently, as befitting a Texas Outlaw, and the two locked up. Back and forth they went, Mean Mark hitting a big boot and the Chief an atomic drop. Both moves netted two counts, but neither man seemed to be able to gain full control. Finally, Mean Mark went for the Outlaw Driver. They were apparently too close to the ropes as Chief used Mark’s leverage to hoist himself to the second rope. When a confused Green turned around, Chief launched himself in the air and connected with a huge Tomahawk Chop to score the win. </p><p>

<p>When SWF rose to International, they gashed my roster. I've never played more than one show ahead since the inception of the diary but in this instance, I went into November to see how much damage they'd do. Needless to say, it is substantial and expect some major shakeups between now and and the end of the year (in-game). </p><p> </p><p>

Fortunately, my main event scene has remained mostly intact as Chief Two Eagles, Professor Nero, George DeColt, and the Texas Outlaws have rebuffed SWF. Below them, though, there will be some major changes coming down the pipeline in the next two or three shows. </p><p> </p><p>

Ah, the fun of running a regional promotion!</p>

Crimson Serpent Cult (Cobra/Viper) v. Mean Mark Green/Floyd 'F-Bomb' Bowman

- Need to be kept strong to challenge the Lords of War. Currently GreenBomb are above the tag straps... but CSC keep the tag division vital. (Unless they're hoping to SWF) How can the faces be fireball hurling snakes? I dunno, must be Texas.

The Lone Star Stampeder v. Cheatin' Mike Barstow

- This will likely be based on LSS's demeanour. Does he want to go out on top or will he help establish a new star in the promotion he owns? I'm going with Stampy losing via cheatin' but getting some just moral victory revenge after the fact.

Edmond Jackson/Giant Grimsley v. Double Disaster (Eruption/Tsunami)

- I think PapaGiant topple the Double Disaster.

Mighty Thor v. 'New School' Jason Jackson

- But the whiny spoiled bratling JJ finds a way to sneak a victory over the Mighty (and mighty gullible) Thor.

War Memorial Auditorium (Midwest)

October 1978

Attendance: 1,312

The Lone Star Stampeder came out to the ring and took a microphone. “For the last two weeks, all I’ve dealt with is boys in the back wantin’ shots at Johnny Lawless and his TWL Title. Seems like Johnny’s made lots of enemies. First guy to ask for a shot was the Trailer Park Kid,” the crowd cheered…a little, “since he thinks Johnny turned the Texas Outlaws into a gang of thugs. Then there was Luis Montero,” again, scattered cheers, “who’s still sore that Johnny treated Shannon so bad. George DeColt wants a shot to prove he’s the best in the world,” the crowd’s reaction was noticeably louder, “and then there’s Chief Two Eagles, the hometown favorite” the crowd erupted. “So I decided that those four men could fight each other and see who the best really is. So tonight, Trailer Park Kid will take on George DeColt and Luis Montero faces Chief Two Eagles. The winners fight next show for a shot at the TWL Title!” C

Crimson Serpent Cult (Cobra/Viper) v. Mean Mark Green/Floyd ‘F-Bomb’ Bowman

Billy’s Take: The crowd still isn’t entirely behind the Crimson Serpent Cult, particularly when they’re matched up against the Texas Outlaws, who still have a very vocal following. Nonetheless, this was an exciting match in which all four men had the opportunity to shine. Bowman was, as always, a whirling dervish in the ring while his partner was much more calculating. The Cult, meanwhile, demonstrated exceptional teamwork and an almost telepathic understanding of one another inside the squared circle. In the end, Bowman grew frustrated that he couldn’t finish off Cobra and slid outside the ring, pulling the ring bell from our octogenarian timekeeper. Despite my admonitions, Bowman slammed the bell into the forehead of Viper, drawing both a stream of blood and an immediate disqualification.

A dark-skinned man wearing a turban came down to the ring and grabbed the microphone. “Tonight, you stupid Americans, I have a real treat for you, though you don’t deserve it. Tonight I, Sheik Mustafa, bring to you the world’s strongest man, the Polish Power Popinowski. Comrade Popinowski will give you a demonstration of the might of Communism and the weakness of your feeble democracy.” Unsurprisingly, the crowd mercilessly booed both Sheik Mustafa and Comrade Popinowski as the latter lumbered down to the ring, face painted with a hammer and sickle. Popinowski, to demonstrate his strength, bent a metal bar over his shoulders, bellowing like a bull elephant the entire time, his ‘all-natural’ muscles flexing with exertion. Apparently satisfied at this demonstration, the duo returned backstage, yelling angrily at the jeering crowd. C-

The Lone Star Stampeder v. Cheatin’ Mike Barstow

Billy’s Take: Before the contest, Stampy announced that this would be his final match and that he wanted to go out proving that winners don’t have to cheat. Barstow ignored this dictum from the boss and used every underhanded tactic he could muster to put down the Stampeder. In the end, Barstow’s incessant cheating and technical expertise were too much for Stampy as Barstow locked in a debilitating armbar in the center of the ring after a blatant thumb to the eye. Stampy had no choice but to give up. On the way backstage, Stampy slapped hands with fans amidst a respectful ovation.

‘Old School’ Edmond Jackson/Giant Grimsley w/Mark ‘The Lariat’ Krogan v. Double Disaster (Eruption/Tsunami)

Billy’s Take: Double Disaster came out first, drawing derisive boos from the midwestern fans. Then Jackson and Grimsley came out, both well-known commodities in the area, and the crowd erupted. The match was a pure, unadulterated display of power as Grimsley and the Samoans charged one another relentlessly, none of them willing to concede an inch. Jackson, for his part, was able to get several shots in as well, rocking the Samoan duo. But in the end, the Samoans were simply too much for the makeshift team of Grimsley and Jackson as, following a timely distraction from Jason Jackson, they double shoulderblocked Jackson from the ring and sent Grimsley to the mat with a well-timed Tidal Wave to pick up the win.

Mighty Thor v. ‘New School’ Jason Jackson

Billy’s Take: Jackson, still flush from the victory just moments earlier, began this match arrogantly, taking his opponent, the Might Thor, far too lightly. Thor responded with vicious open-hand chops across Jackson’s chest, raising a large red welt across the front. Jackson slid unceremoniously to the floor to catch his breath and let me know that he thought the chop had been a closed fist. He just beat my ten count and reengaged the giant, still wary of his tremendous strength. Back and forth the two went, Thor using his power and Jackson his sneakiness to maintain relative equilibrium. Finally, Jackson caught Thor in a pinning predicament, rolling up the giant and grabbing a handful of tights (I later learned) to keep the giant down for the surprising three count upset.

After pinning the Mighty Thor, even ‘New School’ Jason Jackson seemed surprised. Then, apparently realizing his feat, Jackson jumped up and went over-the-top in celebrating, reminding me of Bucky ****ing Dent after he hit the home run to eliminate the Red Sox a couple of weeks ago. Needless to say, Thor was less than pleased and set off after Jackson to the back. D+

Trailer Park Kid v. ‘Gorgeous’ George DeColt w/Mark ‘The Lariat’ KroganBilly’s Take: The Trailer Park Kid and ‘Gorgeous’ George DeColt shook hands before this one kicked off, friends obviously intending a clean and hard-fought match. And that is exactly what resulted, with both men giving their all, but neither taking undue advantage of the other. Back and forth they went, the Trailer Park Kid surprisingly holding his own against the Canadian superstar. But in the end, DeColt was simply the better man on this day and ended the match with a DeColt 45.

An exhausted George DeColt sat on the ring mat recuperating when, seemingly from out of nowhere, Professor Nero and the Lords of War hit the ring. The nefarious trio battered the victorious DeColt, who instinctively curled into a fetal position. Cobra and Viper, the Crimson Serpent Cult, ran down to the ring, chasing off Nero and the Lords of War. C

Chief Two Eagles v. Luis Montero w/Shannon

Billy’s Take: Montero and Shannon came to the ring first. They seem to garner a stronger positive reaction every time out, and this was no exception. Chief Two Eagles, on the other hand, always gets a strong reception and had the crowd on its feet early in this match. These two men put on an exceptional match and one that fans in Texas would’ve loved to see. Momentum see-sawed back and forth, with neither man willing to back down an inch. A Two Eagles chop was met by one from Montero. A Montero suplex countered by a Two Eagles bodyslam. There seemed to be no end in sight when, from nowhere, Chief hit a clothesline and then leapt cat-like onto the second rope, bringing down the Tomahawk Chop on Montero’s head before he could move out of the way. The pinfall was academic.

Luis Montero lay on the mat, still shaking out the cobwebs. Chief Two Eagles stood over his downed opponent and then stretched out his hand. Montero looked to the crowd, as if awaiting their approval. The crowd cheered the two men on before Montero accepted the proffered hand and allowed Two Eagles to pull him to his feet. The duo exchanged a brief handshake as the show came to a close. C+

Who Is...

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/BillPop_2.jpg

Comrade Popinowski?

Bill Popinowski, also known as the Polish Power or Comrade Popinowski, is a former powerlifter who came to wrestling late, debuting in 1969 shortly after his twenty-ninth birthday. After a short time wrestling in the independents, he caught the eye of Richard Eisen, always looking for muscle-bound talent. He debuted in SWF as the enforcer of Coach Dick Pangrazzio's stable The All-Star Team. However, Popinowski's sub-par ring work resulted in him leaving the company after just a few years. Then, in 1975, Popinowski was re-shingling his roof and, due to his tremendous girth, caused the house to collapse. Popinowski was out of wrestling for several years rehabiliting.

TWL is the first 'name' company to give the Polish Power a break since his accident as they have paired him with Sheik Mustafa playing a stereotypical Russian strongman.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/SheikMustafa1977.jpg

Sheik Mustafa?

Sheik Mustafa debuted in 1972 at age 22, having first completed a bachelor's degree and MBA. Hailing from Iraq, he immediately donned a turban and began playing the stereotypical "rich foreign sheik" gimmick began by his eventual mentor, Suhail Assanti. Mustafa is well-traveled, having spent the last six years between APWF and AAFW. His in-ring skills are lackluster, though he is a scary guy and can actually call matches reasonably well. Ideally, he would be better on the stick, but his gimmick means that he'll never have to work too hard to be booed.

Mustafa has held three titles in professional wrestling. His first was the APWF Tri State championship, which he won in August 1975 from the Masked Patriot before droppping it in January of 1976 to former TWL wrestler Babyface Dave (he was one of the original Executioners). In October, 1978, Sheik became a two-time Tri State champion, defeating Mighty Thor for the belt. Sheik Mustafa is also a former APWF Tag Team Champion, winning a tournament for the title with his mentor Suhail Assanti (as the Ayatollah Alliance) in December of 1976. Unfortunately, the duo quickly lost their titles in February 1977 to the team of Masked Patriot and Sam Stragavelli. When Suhail retired, he passed his legacy to the young Mustafa, who has carried the typical "hated foreigner" to TWL.

"So Stampy, are you really callin' it quits?" I asked Erick Campbell, aka The Lone Star Stampeder, as he sat in his office, a bag of frozen peas on one shoulder and ice packs on both knees. "Look at me Billy," Stampy replied, "I ain't gettin' any younger and Archie could use a more youthful partner. I see so much of myself in that boy and want to do all I can for him. But bitchin' about my knees and shoulder ain't why I called you in here Billy. We're havin' some problems. "I mean ****, in the last two weeks, they've signed Kurt Berkely, our lead announcer, Dean Davis, our backup plan for announcing, The Night Rider, a guy we JUST turned face, Larry Grubbs, aka Larry Laffer, and, worst of all," he continued, "Mark Krogan and Warlord Agony!" His face was beet red by this point. "Mark I can understand. He's going there to be a road agent and'll be makin' good money. But Agony? I've been coddlin' and pamperin' him and his little teenage buddy for three years. And how does he repay me? By jumpin' to SWF the minute he's developed into a good wrestler. Nero's pissed and so is Warlord Pain. Pain just signed an 18-month deal and has a lot of friends in the lockerrom. No way I can can him, but how the hell do I use 1/2 of a tag team?" I rubbed my chin for a minute and then laid out how we could use this to freshen up our roster AND, hopefully, minimize damage. When I was done, Stampy slapped me (hard) on the back and then said, "I knew I brought you onto the booking team for a reason kid. We'll see how this plays out! Now get outta here. I gotta ice some more."

With a serious roster shake-up threatening to tear apart Texas wrestling, TWL is still prepared to put on one heck of a show at TWL Fight to the Finish. Between icing his shoulders and knees, Stampy had time to advertise the following matches:

Tag Team Title Match: Crimson Serpent Cult (Cobra/Viper) v. Lords of War (Warlord Agony/Warlord Pain) ©

The Lords of War are facing internal turmoil, but can the Cult really take the belts off Nero's behemoths?

'Old School' Edmond Jackson v. Eruption

Giant Grimsley v. Tsunami

Jackson and Grimsley lost a tag team match against Double Disaster. How will they fare in singles competition?

The Night Rider v. 'New School' Jason Jackson

Jason Jackson has been crowing about taking being both a giant and legend killer. Can he take out the Night Rider or will the oddly-nicknamed Dusty Hoff prevail?

Country Whipping Match: Luis Montero v. Mean Mark Green

For the first time in several years, TWL will host a country whipping match. Both men will doubtlessly be brutalized, but who will come out on top?

Number One Contender's Match: Chief Two Eagles v. 'Gorgeous' George DeColt

Each man won a qualifying match to get to this point. Will the Indian Warrior or Canadian Sensation end up with his hand raised at the end of the night?

Quick Picks:

- Damn you SWF!

'Old School' Edmond Jackson v. Eruption

- Cheating to steal an old school victory.

Giant Grimsley v. Tsunami

- Giant CRUSH~!

The Night Rider v. 'New School' Jason Jackson

- DustyHoff can't collect on the debt he's owed by Jackson... yet.

Country Whipping Match: Luis Montero v. Mean Mark Green

- Back in 1978 you could whip someone and it not be seen as politically incorrect. Here, Green loses... but then the Outlaws whip Montero regardless. Dastardly Outlaws!

Number One Contender's Match: Chief Two Eagles v. 'Gorgeous' George DeColt

- I think it's time for the Chief to get his shot at glory.
