The Platinum Period

Late 1992

The Survivor Series PPV on November 24th is arguably the date where the ushering of a new era was conceived, The Platinum Period as it would go on to be labelled as, this tag line was taken from a phrase used in an interview by one of the new booking team members that joined WWF in the new year. The event saw critics praise only two matches, the WWF Championship match between Bret Hart & Shawn Michaels (which Hart retained in), as well as the heavily hyped tag team encounter that was won by Randy Savage & Mr. Perfect (over Ric Flair & Razor Ramon). The remaining matches however received very negative reviews, with one columnist rating (on a five-star scale) only the Flair/Ramon vs. Savage/Perfect and the Hart vs. Michaels matches higher than one star.

Despite 17,500 fans in attendance at Survivor Series 1992, the same number as the previous year infact, the pay-per-view buyrate was 1.4, which was the lowest buyrate in Survivor Series history and down more than one-third from the previous year's 2.2 buyrate. This buyrate news wasn't an out of the blue reduction though, as the Royal Rumble (1.8, down from 3.1 in 1991), WrestleMania (2.3, down from 2.8 in 1991) and SummerSlam (1.5, down from 2.7 in 1991) were all suffering badly, record lows for both WrestleMania and SummerSlam. This coupled with that of the negative reviews of the overall event forced Vince McMahon to take stock and look at the company as a whole going into 1993, the direction it was currently going in and most importantly the direction they needed to be going in.

In December Vince held several meetings to gauge opinions on where they could improve the product and recapture previous highs, something that with allegations of steroid abuse hanging around wasn't likely in the eyes of many members of staff. Vince was annoyed at such a view, confirming to him that a new booking team was of need to address the problems and move the company into a fresh era, which immediately saw J.J. Dillon removed from his head writer position to a less prominent backstage role. One man saw this as an opportunity to move up within the ranks of WWF, that being freelance writer for WWF Magazine Vince Russo. He successfully sought after Vince McMahon backstage at a house show in New York and laid out some of his ideas for the year ahead, to which McMahon saw some potential in and decided to have Russo join his yet to be completed booking team.

Early 1993

Before the debut of WWF Monday Night Raw, the predecessor of Prime Time Wrestling, Vince made the decision to remove himself from the announcers table to concentrate on behind the curtain activities, moving Jim Ross into the lead commentators position for the impending new program. Jim Ross was also installed as a talent scout for the company, as he had a huge interest and vast knowledge of college sports (along side professional wrestling of course), an area where Vince felt they might be able to secure performers from in the future. Another action before Monday Night Raw's debut was to replace Rob Bartlett whom had been primed for an announcers role, as simply put they found him boring during some test recordings. The man to take his position and to also be part of the new booking team would be former WCW manager/announcer Paul Heyman, aka Paul E. Dangerously, whom left WCW in late 92. He was suggested by Jim Ross, as the pair announced in WCW together and he believed the brash New York character Heyman brings to the table would be ideal for Raw.

WWF Monday Night Raw first aired on January 11th, lasting 1 hour on the USA Network, not in the usual televised professional wrestling guise however, as the Raw formula was very different from the traditional, shot to a live audience, with angles and matches as they happened. Traditionally, wrestling shows were taped on sound stages with small audiences or at large arena shows, with taped matches, studio voice overs and taped chat. The first episode featured Yokozuna defeating Koko B. Ware (whom took two Banzai Drop's and was released after), The Steiner Brothers defeating The Executioners (Duane Gill & Barry Hardy), WWF Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels defeating Paul Diamond (recognised on screen as a former friend of The Rockers) and The Undertaker defeating Damien Demento, plus the show also featured an interview with Razor Ramon (to hype his upcoming title match with Bret Hart). Raw originated from the Grand Ballroom at Manhattan Center Studios, a small New York City theater and the combination of the intimate venue and live action proved highly successful, at least in terms of appeal and feel, although the newly formed announce team gained much praise.

Next on the agenda for WWF in late January was the Royal Rumble PPV, an event that would see the new booking team firmly take hold and make some booking decisions that would really affect the following months, if not years. The big and main decision to be decided upon was that of the Royal Rumble winner, with that wrestler going on to face the WWF Champion in the main event of WrestleMania. With many contenders to choose from the booking team was joined by a further member, none other than the former eight time NWA World Heavyweight Champion Harley Race, whom had left WCW in December 92 following a dispute with Bill Watts (Race would also return in an on screen role soon). Together the foursome wanted to give the fans a great wrestling encounter at WrestleMania, a perfect match, one that only a few wrestlers could potentially produce, so the honour was given to Mr. Perfect. One man not happy with this was Ric Flair, as he claimed J.J. Dillon had promised him a second consecutive Rumble win, however Race managed to win Flair round, with the promise of a good role at Mania and a greater input into his character/storylines going forward.

Rumble Recap

January 24th at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California, saw the crowning of a new Royal Rumble winner, that being the previously mentioned Mr. Perfect, doing so by out lasting Ric Flair in a classic battle royal which saw both men enter the match from the very beginning (Flair no.1 and Perfect no.2). The time spent in the Rumble by Curt Hennig was 1 hour, 1 minute, and 10 seconds, setting a new record for the match, with Ric Flair finishing a single second behind as the runner up. After the match as Hennig celebrated and Flair angrily shouted at the officials (for no good reason, seeing as Perfect eliminated him in fair fashion), the current WWF Champion Bret Hart, whom earlier defeated Razor Ramon in a good back and forth encounter, came down to the ring and offered his hand to the new challenger, which was accepted to set up a fan friendly WrestleMania main event. The WWF Championship match gained MOTN reviews from the majority of columnists, with Scott Hall impressing in his step up and Bret Hart looking every bit the quality champion he is. The Royal Rumble match itself also earned some praise, with the Perfect/Flair hour long battle being of great entertainment, as well as some other impressive displays mixed with some well booked moments.

Elsewhere in the Royal Rumble match Yokozuna also entered the record books, as he eliminated eight wrestlers, including Bob Backlund, Tatanka, both of The Natural Disasters, but most notably that of The Undertaker, via a huge savate kick, only seconds after Taker had clotheslined both of The Headshrinkers over the top rope to the floor. Yokozuna was eventually eliminated by a threesome of Mr. Perfect, Randy Savage and Kerry Von Erich (whom was making his return to WWF following his departure during the Summer of 1992). In other Rumble incidents Razor Ramon put his defeat in the WWF Championship match behind him, as he attacked Terry Taylor before he made it to the ring and promptly took his place, only to find the next entrant was the very man he attacked only a month or so ago, namely Owen Hart. Owen raced to the ring, went straight after Ramon, whom decided against a fight and took off through the crowd to the back (Owen then re-entered the ring but fell foul to Yokozuna not long after). There would be one other man to return in the Rumble match to the WWF, Paul Roma, whom left WWF mid-1991 and was rumored to be joining WCW, however Harley Race convinced him of a better eventually position within the company. The event also saw Bobby Heenan finally unveil his newest wrestler, the debuting Lex Luger, or "The Narcissist" Lex Luger as he was stated as. Luger posed infront of a mirror for a few minutes and Heenan warned Mr. Perfect about his new man.

In the opening match, Shawn Michaels retained the WWF Intercontinental Championship against Marty Jannetty after a couple of interference's, firstly Sensational Sherri showed her allegiance by slapping Michaels, then whilst the ref was down Paul Diamond (whom had been showing his support for Jannetty in the weeks building up to the match) came down to the ring and tried to aid him, only to nail Jannetty by accident with a Superkick aimed for Michaels. Interestingly the trio would also tangle in the Royal Rumble match later on, however this three way brawl did none of them any favours as it allowed The Undertaker to eliminate all three in one fell swoop. The other two undercard matches saw The Steiner Brothers defeat The Beverly Brothers in a decent 10 minute encounter, to see whom were the best team of brothers in the WWF, and Bam Bam Bigalow pinned The Big Boss Man after a Bambamsault. The last two bouts weren't seen as great by critics, especially the latter match which many felt was a waste of 8 minutes until the final move. The event overall drew 16,000 spectators, who paid $187,000 in admission fees, which was slightly down from the previous year's 17,000 fans but the pay-per-view buyrate wasn't as bad as some had feared, with a figure of 1.6, which whilst lower than the 1.8 of 1992, was a small increase from the disappointing Survivor Series figures.

Looking good so far mate. Love me some retro WWF!

It's great to see Mr Perfect winning the rumble, although I hope he goes full heel before WM.

Hope Jannetty doesn't become the...well, Marty Jannetty of The Rockers. Push him over Michaels says I!

The Platinum Period

February Fallout

In early February following on from a good Royal Rumble event "The Immortal" Hulk Hogan returned to WWF, making his Monday Night Raw debut by interrupting "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair, this however would prove to be his one and only Raw appearance, creating mountains of problems for the WWF booking team. The segment saw Ric Flair demand to be in the main event at WrestleMania, claiming that nobody, not Bret Hart, Mr. Perfect or anybody else in the WWF could make as much money for the company as he could, or infact deserves to be the in the spotlight like he should. This of course saw Hulk Hogan bring down the building as his music hit, made his way to the ring and set about challenging Flair to an almighty WrestleMania encounter. Flair at first ran Hogan down, stating he was fit to lace the boots he wrestled in, but then after a brief thought, he accepted saying that he has longed for the day to finally end HulkaMania forever, setting up a dream battle that would take equal billing alongside the WWF Championship match, between Bret Hart & Mr. Perfect. With the match all but set in stone, a huge bombshell was dropped only a few days later, as Hulk Hogan informed Vince McMahon and WWF officials that he would not be taking part in WrestleMania after all.

As the story goes, New Line Cinema ordered Hulk Hogan to withdraw from the event, having heard that the star for their upcoming film Mr. Nanny was set to lose on such a massive stage as WrestleMania. They believed that if Hogan was to lose and be seen by fans as a loser that less money would be made once the film was released (in April in Europe and October in America). The first instinct of Vince's was to try and work out a solution to have Hogan leave Mania on a high to please the film makers, but Flair was stead fast in the fact he had been promised a major role at WrestleMania and was due to become the no.1 contender for the WWF Championship into the Summer, losing would kill all those plans and it actually got to the point where Flair threatened to walk if the company pandered to Hogan's film makers demands. In the face of this lose-lose situation, Harley Race & Jim Ross, whom was becoming more and more involved with talent relations, managed to convince Vince McMahon that the way to go was to let Hulk Hogan leave and focus building the company around wrestlers that were fully committed to the WWF.

Making this decision alone wasn't the only issue though, as with Hogan leaving it meant that the built Flair/Hogan showdown was off and that a new match to satisfy Flair's promises was required, else they could be on the end of another huge walkout. Within a few days the booking team had put together a shortlist of three different WrestleMania options for Flair, firstly a rematch with Randy Savage (as he was the biggest name face beyond Bret Hart & Mr. Perfect on roster), maybe in a steel cage this time round to change it up from the previous year. Flair had of course lost the WWF Championship to Savage in 1992 at Mania so this was an option that had workable reasoning for. Secondly to alter the main event to Bret Hart vs. Ric Flair, with an attack or injury angle to explain Mr. Perfect's absence, although this wasn't an option liked by many, infact only by Vince Russo. Then thirdly, and most liked by majority of the booking team, was the idea of bringing in a wrestler just for this event, either somebody from Flair's past or from overseas, with a fair few wrestlers in Japan covering both aspects. Whilst Flair wanted the spotlight he also saw that it wasn't right for the WWF to alter the main event, so that option was off the table, leaving two decent options, but it would simply depend on whom the WWF could sign in the next couple of months if the third option would become the answer to the problem.

The Platinum Period

Full Steam Ahead

Early March saw Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat confirmed as Ric Flair's WrestleMania opponent, replacing the previously mentioned and departed Hulk Hogan. It was thought by WWF that Steamboat wasn't a viable option because he was believed to have signed a new long term contract in February with WCW, however this wasn't actually the case, he had signed a one month rolling contract. This deal was reached following a dispute between Ricky and the newly appointed Executive Producer Eric Bischoff, whom had replaced Bill Watts and was looking to move the company into a more modern direction, causing the initial contract offer to Steamboat to be both for less money and a lower card position. As soon as WWF heard about this situation they moved in to secure Ricky Steamboat for not only WrestleMania but also the foreseeable future. On screen though it wasn't so simple, as firstly they had to explain away the absence of Hulk Hogan and explain it they did, in semi-shoot mode Ric Flair told the World that Hogan and his film producers were scared of Hogan looking like a pathetic loser at WrestleMania, that's why he had done a runner and wouldn't be competing. To follow on the story Flair then proceeded to blame WWF President Jack Tunney for allowing him to back out, but words weren't enough and Flair assaulted Tunney, locking in the Figure Four Leg Lock to effectively write Tunney out. It was the booking teams belief that Tunney wasn't relevant enough and that the position should be taken by a former wrestler, namely booking team member Harley Race. This also fit in nicely to the Flair story (what with them being former rivals) and Race wasted no time in docking Flair's wages for two months, plus informing him of the replacement he found, his former foe Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat.

It wasn't all good news during this period for WWF though, as during a radio interview booking team member Paul Heyman revealed that Mark Calaway, aka The Undertaker, was in need of surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee. Its for that reason why he was eliminated by Yokozuna in the Royal Rumble, as he is seen in the company as the most realistic performer to be able to write The Undertaker out with. Since the Rumble the booking team has worked towards a match between the two at WrestleMania and its expected that Yokozuna will go over, with both Taker and Paul Bearer being injured in some fashion to allow time off for Calaway, its uncertain if Bearer will return however. Before The Royal Rumble rumors have suggested that Vince McMahon and Vince Russo wanted former WCW wrestler El Gigante to debut under the name of The Gravedigger, attacking and setting up an encounter at WrestleMania, although those rumors were squashed by Heyman. Paul Heyman did mention that González could appear on TV after Mania, likely in the form of a bodyguard type, as he and others are worried about his ability to produce good and exciting bouts. It was actually during this very interview that 'The Platinum Period' phrase was coined, as when asked about his and the new booking teams goals, Heyman stated that they want to put together a pack of platinum level performers to carry the promotion forward for years to come, naming the likes of Bret Hart, Mr. Perfect, Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, The Undertaker, Razor Ramon, Owen Hart, Shawn Michaels, Marty Jannetty, Paul Roma and Kerry Von Erich.

Elsewhere on the WrestleMania card the WWF Tag Team Championships will be on the line, pitting current champions Money Inc. against the quickly rising team of The Steiner Brothers, Owen Hart will do battle with his attacker from earlier in the year Razor Ramon, "The Narcissist" Lex Luger takes on Randy Savage as he looks to take out a legend on his way to the top, the WWF Intercontinental champion Shawn Michaels defends against two competitors; Marty Jannetty & Paul Diamond, with Sensational Sherri as the special guest referee, and finally a 10 man Battle Royal is confirmed (with Paul Roma, Kerry Von Erich, Tatanka, Bam Bam Bigalow and the returning British Bulldog announced so far). The Intercontinental title match is interestingly in the hands of Paul Heyman, whom decided to make the Rockers feud into whats being called a Triangle match, a match that he once booked during his tenure at Windy City Wrestling in Chicago. The addition of Paul Diamond to the mix wasn't getting rave reviews however, until he had a sit down interview segment with Jim Ross on an episode of Monday Night Raw. Diamond explained how whilst he respected Marty Jannetty more than Shawn Michaels, he actually had issues with both, citing that he was actually the initial Rocker alongside Marty before WWF (kayfabe-a-mundo), until an injury put him on sidelines and he was replaced by Shawn Michaels, a decision made by Jannetty, which annoyed Diamond. Then of course the turning of Michaels on Jannetty, which again greatly annoyed him as he feels Michaels owed The Rockers fans, Marty and him more. Heyman see's this match as a sort of statement for the future, featuring three good-great performers, with a meaningful story, in a uniquely styled match unseen by the mainstream fans before. Finally the 10 man Battle Royal winner will receive an Intercontinental title shot at the next Saturday Night Main Event, which is pencilled in for May, roughly a month after WrestleMania.

The Platinum Period

A Perfect Day

At Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 4th, 1993, WrestleMania proved to be a great pay-per-view for WWF on the whole, but for one performer it proved to be a truly perfect day, as Curt Hennig completed a life long dream, ending the event standing tall on the corner turnbuckle holding the WWF Championship proudly above his head. In what was seen as a wrestling clinic by fans and columnists alike Mr. Perfect defeated the now former champion Bret "The Hitman" Hart after 28 minutes of exciting back and forth action. The booking team refused to turn Mr. Perfect heel leading into the event, although they did have the likes of Bobby Heenan and Ric Flair plant seeds of doubt into Bret Hart's mind about whether Mr. Perfect's true nature would come into play. The decision was verified though as the crowd brought into the fan friendly feeling of the encounter and thoroughly enjoyed cheering on both men, especially the moment when Perfect secured Hart in his Perfect Plex for the second time to get the all important three count. A nice side feature was the fact WWF invited both Larry "The Axe" Hennig and Stu Hart to sit ringside for the match.

The co-main event between Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair also hit all the right notes for the most part, as Flair managed to overcome his former foe, a former foe that was selected by WWF on screen President Harley Race as Hulk Hogan's replacement after he walked out of the company. The match wasn't without its own controversy though, with Steamboat becoming the victim of an assault whilst the ref was down to enable Flair to lock in the Figure Four Leglock for the victory. For 22 minutes the match was like the main event itself and like many of the Flair-Steamboat classics of the past, a greatly enthralling up and down bout. However after the ref got knocked down accidentally by a running Steamboat clothesline, a security guard dressed in Roman gladiator type attire, as that was a running theme for the event, nailed "The Dragon" on his right knee with part of the outfit, a solid gold shield. Steamboat had no option but to tap-out once Flair locked in the submission as the mystery individual, whose long blonde hair was the only clue to whom it could potentially be, left slowly through the crowd.

On the undercard there were more newly crowned title holders, firstly in the opening contest of the evening The Steiner Brothers defeated Money Inc. to become the WWF World Tag Team champions, following a miscommunication between DiBiase and IRS that lead to a huge Steiner-Line. Secondly Paul Diamond scored a major upset in the first ever Triangle match as he became the WWF Intercontinental champion, however the special guest referee Sensational Sherri played a huge part. With Diamond down after a Superkick by Shawn Michaels, Marty Jannetty then nailed Michaels with his Rocker Dropper, but before he could get the pin Sherri took off her shoe and blasted Jannetty over the back of the head, then laid Diamond over him, quickly counted the three and left together celebrating. Elsewhere The Undertaker and Paul Bearer were both squashed by Yokozuna after he was defeated via a choke-slam following some salt to the eyes by mistake from Mr. Fuji (the pair left with the urn), "The Narcissist" Lex Luger took out Randy Savage via a brutal forearm smash that knocked "Macho Man" out cold, Owen Hart got revenge on Razor Ramon by rolling him up for a three count to counter the Razor's Edge in an impressive 10 minute match and finally "The Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich won the 10 man Battle Royal to earn an Intercontinental Title shot at at the next Saturday Night Main Event (lastly eliminating Paul Roma).

The Platinum Period

Title Holders
(as of 04|04|93)

WWF Championship Title - "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig

Height: 6'3"

Weight: 260 lbs

From: Robbinsdale, Minnesota

Finisher: Perfect-Plex

Titles: WWF Championship Title, WWF Intercontinental Title [2], Royal Rumble [1993]

Curt Hennig, aka Mr. Perfect, defeated Bret "The Hitman" Hart at WrestleMania in a fan friendly encounter to become the WWF Champion for the very first time. He is expected to face "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair at the debuting, but not announced on screen yet, pay-per-view King of The Ring (in mid June), which is based upon the successful single man tournaments that have featured in WWF since 1985. Perfect still has one other man to keep an eye on, that being Bobby Heenan, whom at the Royal Rumble introduced "The Narcissist" Lex Luger to the WWF, the man whom he hopes will exact revenge for him on his former protege.

WWF Intercontinental Title - "Precious" Paul Diamond

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 230 lbs

From: Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

Finisher: Diamond Drop

Titles: WWF Intercontinental Title

"Precious" Paul Diamond has come from seemingly nowhere to now be the WWF Intercontinental champion, beating both former friends "The Rocker" Marty Jannetty and "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania in the first ever Triangle match. He owes that victory to his new valet though, Sensational Sherri, as she nailed Jannetty with her shoe before counting the three to shock the fans and both opponents. Issues with Jannetty and Michaels may still linger on, but Diamond's first defense will come against "The Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich, whom won a Battle Royal at WrestleMania to earn a shot at the next big show, Saturday Night Main Event, due in may.

WWF Tag Team Titles - The Steiner Brothers (Rick & Scott Steiner)

Height: 5'11" - 6'1"

Weight: 258 lbs - 250 lbs

From: Bay City, Michigan

Finisher: Steiner-Line

Titles: WWF Tag Team Titles

The Steiner Brothers have quickly become one of the best, and most loved, tag teams in WWF, rising through the ranks quicker than any team previously. They made their wrestling debut on the first ever Monday Night Raw, have since defeated The Beverly Brothers, The Bushwhackers, The Nasty Boyz and The Headshrinkers, but most importantly they beat Money Inc. at WrestleMania to become WWF Tag Team Champions. Their biggest test may be yet to come though as news over the WrestleMania weekend broke that former champions Legion of Doom were indeed returning, squashing rumors that Animal could miss years of wrestling due to a back injury.

More stuff to follow soon...... and by soon I mean anywhen between now and xmas.

</span></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"><span style="font-size:10px;">•</span></span></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> Monday Night Raw started with a video package from the previous night's huge WrestleMania pay-per-view, before going live to WWF President "The King" Harley Race, whom was standing in the ring at the Manhattan Center. He firstly thanked the fans for a great WrestleMania, then he wanted to make a few announcements about upcoming events. Race confirmed that the next big event would be Saturday Night's Main Event, scheduled for the 1st of May, which would feature new WWF Intercontinental champion "Precious" Paul Diamond against the Mania Battle Royal winner "The Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich. Race then announced that as he is "The King" it would be fitting for the King of The Ring tournament to return, but this time as an actual pay-per-view, taking place on June 13th in Dayton, Ohio, with the first qualifying match between Bret "The Hitman" Hart and Rick "The Model" Martel as the night's main event. </span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> </span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;">

Bob Backlund (7:16)</span></span></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> - The opening contest of Monday Night Raw saw the WrestleMania Battle Royal runner up Paul Roma, whom is now referring to himself as "The Modern Man", defeat the always game Bob Backlund by pin fall following an Elbow Drop from the top rope. After the match Roma asked for a mic, demanded to be part of the King of The Ring tournament and claimed that it was time for a modern man to be the center piece of the World Wrestling Federation. </span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> </span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;">

</span></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"><span style="font-size:10px;">•</span></span></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> Following a commercial an unknown man dressed in a smart suit, with his long blonde hair tied back and a bag in one hand entered the arena. He got into the ring, called out that it was time, which prompted the lights to go down and a spotlight to be focused in on him, causing the crowd to boo instantly. His first real words were to tell the fans that he was here to steal the spotlight yet again. He proceeded to introduce himself as "The Showstealer" Shane Douglas and then pulled out a solid gold shield from the bag, which immediately drew more heat as the fans clicked. Douglas laughed and mimicked the action he did at WrestleMania on Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, swinging the shield viciously at knee height. To close Douglas said that he stole the show last night by taking out Steamboat for a couple of reasons, one because Steamboat deserved it, suggesting that "The Dragon" knew why, and two, simply because "The Showstealer" can.</span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> </span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;">

Mooney revealed the next King of The Ring qualifying match would see Yokozuna taking on the still undefeated in singles competition Tatanka and also that on Superstars "The Rocker" Marty Jannetty & "The Rocket" Owen Hart would be against "The Bad Guy" Razor Ramon & "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels in tag team action.</span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> </span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;">

The Berzerker & Damien Demento (4:58)</span></span></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> - The second encounter of the evening saw the newly crowned WWF Tag Team champions come out victorious against the strange thrown together pair of The Berzerker & Damien Demento. During the early part of the match The Steiner Brothers were shown via video talking about being fighting champions and said they were ready for whatever challenges or challengers that lie ahead. </span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> </span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;">

However before Hennig could even get a word out he was interrupted by none other than his former associate and rival "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair. Standing by the entrance Flair quickly stated that he should be next in line to challenge for the WWF Championship Title following his victory over Ricky Steamboat at WrestleMania. Hennig effectively accepted the idea that Flair deserves a shot at the gold, although he did so whilst mentioning how it took a security man in a dress for Flair to get the win. Weirdly Flair wasn't forthcoming with a reply, he just stood there smiling, waiting for what he clearly knew was coming, as "The Narcissist" Lex Luger slid into the ring from the crowd and nailed Hennig with a brutal forearm smash to the back of his head, knocking Perfect out cold. Luger was then joined in the ring by his manager Bobby Heenan as they stood tall over Hennig and Flair continued to smile, much to the crowds annoyance. </span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> </span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;">

Rick "The Model" Martel (12:30)</span></span></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> - The main event of Monday Night Raw and also the first qualifying match of the King of The Ring 1993 tournament, saw Bret "The Hitman" Hart regroup from losing his WWF Championship at WrestleMania to Curt Hennig by defeating Rick "The Model" Martel via submission. Before the match got underway commentators Jim Ross & Paul Heyman were joined at their desk by Yokozuna and his manager Mr. Fuji, whom brought out with him the urn Paul Bearer used to treasure. Despite wearing headsets the pair only muttered small talk between themselves, in Japanese of course. The show ended with the crowd cheering Bret Hart as he eased through to the quarter finals and a now standing Yokozuna stared on intensely. </span></div></div><p></p><p></p><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> </span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;"> </span></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><span style="font-family:Tahoma;">
