WCW Montreal Aftermath: History Done Over

This will be more of a watcher game deal where I'll post mainly results and going on's around the World. I've really gotten into this game and it's keeping me sane while modding. It's one of my favourite time periods and is my attempt at re-writing what I think should've been in WCW, the promotion that I'm playing as. I'm a few months in already so things like tv ratings I can't post for a few shows at least until I catch up.

From the mod Dec 1997

The Story So Far.....

North America

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/Costnaza9/USA.pnghttp://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/Costnaza9/Canada.png

In late 1993, former commentator of the AWA and long time WCW employee, Eric Bischoff was appointed as Executive Vice President of WCW. Bischoff was desperate to give the promotion a new direction and impressed Ted Turner with his tactics and business savvy. Things in professional wrestling were about to change forever.

When Bischoff entered his position in WCW, he was given full access to Ted Turner's check book to try and defeat the WWF by any means necessary. With that in mind, Bischoff made his first move and signed Hulk Hogan from the WWF in early 1994. The WWF, without their biggest draw of the last 10 years on the roster, began to suffer immediately and started building new stars out of the likes of Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Lex Luger, Razor Ramon and Diesel. Despite putting on a spectacular wrestling performance at WrestleMania X, the WWF still could not draw the desired fans. On June 11, Hogan officially signed with WCW and made an immediate impact by facing Ric Flair at the July pay-per-view Bash at the Beach. Despite being a critical and financial success, the glory would not last long as the Hogan/Flair feud was only a one-off match. Five months later and after a decade with the WWF, Randy Savage was lured with a big money contract to WCW as well.

Away from the war between the WWF and WCW, a new breed of professional wrestling was beginning. NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling renamed itself "Extreme Championship Wrestling" when Shane Douglas won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship tournament in Philadelphia. He threw down the NWA World Title, picked up the ECW Heavyweight championship and proclaimed himself ECW World Heavyweight Champion. WCW also began to sign talented wrestlers based in ECW. Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, Rey Misterio, Jr. and Juventud Guerrera were just a few of the names to be recruited from the much smaller, lower budget ECW to the growing promotion known as WCW. Most of the talents signed had been scouted by ECW, more directly Paul Heyman.

The war between WCW and WWF really picked up on May 27, 1996 when Scott Hall (who had previously been Razor Ramon in the WWF) interrupted a match and said he was taking over the show. When confronted by Sting by the end of the show, Hall promised a big surprise. The following week, Kevin Nash (who had been Diesel in the WWF) also showed up. They claimed they had a third man with them, but the man didn't show up for several weeks. Finally at Bash at the Beach on July 7, the third man was revealed to be Hulk Hogan, who turned heel and declared in his post-match speech that he, Hall and Nash were "the new world order of professional wrestling." WCW

proved to be the figurehead of professional wrestling by this stage and the WWF were no longer the most popular wrestling product in North America for the first time in over 15 years.

The New World Order (shortened to nWo) has run amuck in WCW and destroyed McMahon's product as WCW has came up with more legitimate, edgy storylines and characters over the WWF's cartoon style of character. With Hogan winning the WCW World Heavyweight Championship from The Giant at Hog Wild with help from Nash and Hall. The Giant joined the group weeks later and the nWo proved to be the most powerful faction in professional wrestling.

Montreal Screwjob

After months of WCW gaining plentiful power over the WWF thanks to its highly successful New World Order storyline, it became evident that after years of service to the WWF, Bret Hart was leaving for WCW. There was only one thing standing between Hart and his new found home; the WWF Championship. Hart, along with Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker had been the stronghold of the WWF throughout the nWo storyline and Hart had the title for a solid period of time.Amidst all the drama, McMahon requested that Hart drop the title at Survivor Series against Shawn Michaels. Hart said he'd drop the title to anyone but Shawn Michaels; otherwise he would vacate

the title the next night on RAW. McMahon accepted his decision and allowed Hart to continue on his way to Survivor Series. What was brewing in professional wrestling was something nobody except McMahon and a few associates knew.

The match went ahead as planned and showed yet another display of technical brilliance from both competitors. However, as Michaels locked in the Sharpshooter to finish the match, McMahon told referee Earl Hebner (who was supposedly in on the act) to "ring the damn bell!" Hebner then signaled to the timekeeper as if Hart had submitted to the hold, and Michaels was quickly awarded the match and the title as his theme music began to play. Hebner then bolted backstage from the ring, allegedly to a waiting car.

Astounded by the unexpected turn of events, Hart was immediately outraged. As Hart stood dazed in the ring, Triple H and Gerald Brisco came out to escort Michaels back stage as the fans threw garbage at him and rained boos. Michaels himself was told to act even more outraged than Hart because if he didn't, they feared, due to his bad temper, that Hart would attack and pummel him for real (as he had tried to do, but was unsuccessful at several months earlier backstage at a RAW taping). As ringside commentators Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler quickly departed their announce position, Hart looked down at McMahon from the ring, spit right in his eye, and shortly after destroyed several TV monitors at ringside before climbing the turnbuckles and signing the letters "WCW" to the rabid crowd.

With Bret Hart's move to WCW, it appears WCW is prime to push the WWF right off the map.

Japan

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/Costnaza9/japan.png

In North Korea, approximately 150,000 attend a New Japan Pro Wrestling event, setting an attendance record for one day as nearly 190,000 fans attend the second day of wrestling at the Korean cultural festival on April 28 and 29, 1995. New Japan has taken the lead over old rival promotion AJPW with the defection of top stars like Riki Choshu and a handful of crossover MMA stars. While the wrestling in the Orient has been first class the area has suffered of late due to a financial collapse in the region. With new promotions looking to start up and bring diversity to the stiff style in Japan the future looks exciting for the home of puro.

Mexico

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/Costnaza9/Mexico.png

The late 90's have witnessed Mexico robbed of it's greatest lucha's to the lure of North American money. As WCW and WWF sign hot prospect after prospect, Mexico's two biggest mainstay promotion's CMLL and AAA watch as their rosters are stripped almost bare. The departure of the countries biggest stars to the US has seen a big downturn in the industry and has the top two promotions searching for the next generation of stars.

UK

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/Costnaza9/UK.jpg

The United Kingdom continues to serve as a huge fan base for professional wrestling but local promotions still struggle with stability. With the introduction of the Monday night wars to UK fans TV screens the industry continues to be hugely popular. Fans of the early 80's product are also coming of age and a few even stepping into the ring themselves creating a new crop of UK workers that many are calling the greatest generation out of the UK for decades.

Europe

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/Costnaza9/EuropeanUnion.png

Professional wrestling has always had a solid vocal fan base in Europe although it remains a fairly small one. Recent changes in Eastern Europe and an ever growing strong economy has seen the sport gain momentum. The Catch Wrestling Association, based in Germany and established by Otto Wanz continues to draw decent crowds using former US stars and local talent although with the rapid change pro wrestling is undertaking in the US product wise, it's uncertain how long the CWA will remain relevant.

Australia & NZ

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/Costnaza9/Austrailia.png

It's glory years long gone Australian wrestling has returned with a massive bang in the late 90's. Coinciding with the introduction of cable TV in the country the Monday Night Wars have drawn Aussie wrestling fans back to the sport in droves.

With WWF's RAW and WCW Nitro already two of the highest rated shows on cable many local promoters and businessmen are looking to capitilise on it's success.

You follows my diary, so it only seems fair that I follows yours.

Hehe thanks dude but I honestly don't mind if you don't have time and stuff, I'm writing this as much for me as board members because it's a fun watcher game to see unfold and I'm only a few months in.

I forgot to say also, this isn't meant to take away from your diary, I know you just started it and it's from the same time and promotion. The style I'll be doing will be much different and hopefully not distract whatsoever from your work :)

I know you aren't, I even might find some inspiration in your diary. :)

We are not rivals we're colleagues, playing different ways. :)

WCW Storylines Update....

* The Hollywood Hogan vs Sting feud finally saw an encounter between the two at Starrcade '97 for the WCW World Heavyweight Title. After close to a year of stalking Hogan from the rafters Sting overcame the odds and claimed the belt at WCW's biggest PPV. After the match had a No Interference clause included into it a few weeks prior to the bout the nWo still attempted to disrupt the bout. As the climax of the match was building and Sting had his Scorpion Death Lock on Hollywood Hogan, nWo members flooded from behind the curtain to the ramp on their way to the ring. After several wCW alumni failed to fight them back there was nothing standing in between the nWo and the ring... until Bret Hart made his way out and made his choice between WCW or the nWo clear cleaning house on the heel stable. As Hart fought off the nWo on the outside Hogan finally submitted and tapped out leaving Sting as the victor.

* Bret Hart debuted to a huge ovation on Nitro with everyone asking where he'd fit into the WCW machine. Both Eric Bischoff and Ric Flair pleaded with Hart to join their allegiance in the weeks leading up to Starrcade. Bret made it clear to Eric that he wasn't interested in choosing sides and his sole puropse was to gain a title shot and prove his worth where "The big boys play". Bischoff let Hart know that a WCW World Title shot was out of the question as Sting vs Hogan had been booked for months but he would give him a shot at the WCW US Title against Curt Hennig, the stipulation being that if Bret lost he would have to join the new World order. Hart's debut match didn't disappoint as he not only claimed the WCW US Title but wrestled Hennig in the match of the night, proving already his talent in ring is invaluable. Fans thought they had seen the last of Bret for the night but he returned in the main event saving Sting from nWo interfence and thus making it clear he had chosen WCW... or had he?

* The Diamond Dallas Page vs Randy Savage storyline came to an end at Starrcade with DDP coming out on top in a great match. Savage & Page have been going at it for the better half of 1997 and after a double DQ draw on Nitro a few weeks prior a clear winner was finally seen. It seems this feud which was voted by many as one of the best of '97 can be laid to rest.

* The Giant vs Kevin Nash feud which had been building for months came to it's conclusion earlier then expected, on Nitro and not Starrcade as many thought the match would take place. It seems WCW creative feared the two giants would stink up the ring on the promotions biggest event of the year and decided to end the feud early. The fears were unfounded though as Nash & Giant wrestled to a B rated match and suprised many with their chemistry.

* The Outsiders vs Steiner Brothers storyline ended with a huge twist, seeing Nash & Hall claiming the WCW World Tag Titles. After The Outsiders won the belts in a much better then expected match, the rematch was set for Starrcade '97. In what looks to be the last time the two will pair for the foreseeable future The Steiners lost again this time due to a Scott Steiner turn. Building towards the end of the match and a Steiners comeback, Rick Steiner looked for the tag but Scott dropped off the apron and walked to the back leaving his brother and long time partner to the mercy of Nash & Hall. Scott Steiner is said to have a big heel push in store after the turn has given him great momentum and he's gaining fast in popularity.

* The Chris Benoit vs Raven w/The Flock storyline continued really kicking off in week 2 as Benoit won the WCW TV Title from Flock member Saturn as Raven watched on helpessly from the outside. Raven did try to interfere but was thwarted when a debuting "British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith made the save. Raven gained his revenge the following Nitro challenging and defeating Davey Boy in his debut match via outside interference from Saturn. Benoit attempted to make the save but this time The Flock was waiting and ready ambushing him as he ran down the ramp to the ring. Raven and The Flock proceeded to lay a beatdown on Benoit and Davey Boy to set up the Raven vs Benoit WCW TV Title match at Starrcade. In a match that alot of critics thought may very well steal the show both men failed to blow anyone away. While the bout was far from a stinker the C rating it received told WCW creative these two aren't as over as hoped.

* Chris Jericho entered into a storyline with Eric Bischoff over his position within the company. Jericho cut a scathing promo on Eric early in the month and complained that his talents aren't valued enough and demanded a title shot. Bischoff answered Jericho's call the following week and called him into his office to let him know he'd be receiving a shot against Curt Hennig for the WCW US Title. Jericho made several near pins but was eventually pinned with a quick roll up. Enraged Jericho stormed into Eric's office and demanded another tile shot complaining that the nWo cost him the match. Bichoff told Jericho he'd have to earn another WCW US Title shot and gave him a chance at the WCW CW Title. After another valiant effort Jericho fell just short and was defeated by WCW CW champion Eddy Guerrero. Pundits are curious as to where the Jericho losing streak may lead, clearly one of the most talented young workers in the country, the Bischoff storyline has elevated him a little even though he's failed to pick up any big wins.

* The Buff Bagwell vs Lex Luger storyline continued after months of angles including pose downs and arm wrestling Bagwell picked up the victory at Starrcade. A flash pinfall failed to really put closure on this long running feud and one more decisive match looks to be in the works.

* The Cruiserweight Division gained a little more momentum with the new creative team. Most TV shows are now featuring at least a few matches from the cruisers though they are being slowly exposed more and more. The rightful concern from the booking team is that they aren't anywhere near popular enough yet to be featured heavily or high on the card, though with time and hard work from the division prospects this should change. Eddy Guerrero dropped the WCW Cruiserweight Championship to Rey Mysterio Jr. at Starrcade in solid but not spectacular match.

* The Bischoff vs Zbyszko storyline which was building to a match between the two at Starrcade was abruptly ended when WCW creative decided the match was desitned to be a flop.

It's a different format, and I think it works well due to the storyline recap towards the end. I'm sure you'll tweek it over time but good start.

Except releasing Bobby Eaton. You couldn't even send him to WCW: Florida as a trainer? :(

Yes that was a bit disheartening, as I am a huge fan of Bobby Eaton myself.

It's funny you guys say that about Eaton, I never saw much of his work and so didn't push hard to find a spot for him. However while modding the 1987 data I've been watching alot of old school stuff and his work is one guy that stood out as someone I enjoy. He has such a unique look and a great worker, I started this game just before I started modding and seen any of his stuff. If I started it today I'd probably look to re-unite the Midnight Express in some form.

Next month should be up soon.

WCW Storylines Update....

* The Hollywood Hogan & nWo vs Sting feud rage on into the new year and things looked to get ugly after Eric Bischoff declared the rematch between the two would take place in a steel cage. The date was set for the WCW/nWo Souled Out PPV and the storyline continued to gain even more momentum. Scott Hall would enter the fold complaining to Bischoff that he still hadn't seen the title shot he'd earnt only a few months prior. As the PPV drew near the first signs of weakness have appeared within the New World Order. After Scott Hall and Eric Bischoff exchanged some heated words the conflict has been apparent and obvious for all to see. Scott Hall and Kevin Nash have even seen a little heat between them after Hall confronted Nash about his loyalty in a segment that went over well. While The Outsiders bested Harlem Heat at the big event Hogan failed to recapture the WCW World Heavyweight Title in a match that even the harshest of critics were suprised by. The cage element definitely helped the match as both veterans of the ring built some fantastic spots up top with Sting carrying the selling workload. While the nWo members attempted to stop Sting from climbing over the top Scott Hall deserted his positon outside and allowed Sting to escape the cage leaving a bloodied Hogan laid out inside the cage. Hogan confronted Hall the following Nitro but was quickly assured by both Nash and himself that they were "nWo 4 Life". The nWo regroup and Bischoff grants Hall his title shot booking Sting vs Hall for the SuperBrawl PPV in Febuary.

* Bret Hart and Ric Flair entered into a feud after Hart had looked to have joined WCW's side in the war. After Bret had defeated Curt Hennig to retain the WCW US Title on Nitro the nWo began to pour into the ring. As the stable readied Hart for a branding with their spraypaint Ric Flair and the 4 Horsemen made the save and sent the nWo to the back. In a promo the following week that many expected to be a "thank you" to Ric Flair turned into a tirade aimed The Nature Boy and his long time stable members. Bret cut a scathing interview telling Flair he doesn't need help from a "Has been" and that just because he didn't choose to side with the nWo doesn't mean he'siding with WCW or the 4 Horsemen. Flair confronted Hart on the same night,a challenged issued and a date set for their encounter. The match didn't disappoint but at the same time didn't exceed spectacular, a technical masterpiece in the early goings it soon erupted into a brawl which Hart got the better of beating Flair to retain his newly won WCW United States Championship. At the end of the match Bret wouldn't refused to release the Sharpshooter until Chris Benoit made his way out. Bret released the hold and the two had a stare down with Hart never taking his eyes off the "Rabid Wolverine". The Bret vs 4 Horsemen storyline looks to be continuing with Benoit next in Hart's sights.

* Chris Jericho and Eric Bischoff continued their storyline with Jericho finally being able to break his losing streak. In consecutive weeks Jericho defeated Konnan, Chavo Guerrero Jr. and Disco Inferno. With his new found confidence Jericho stormed into Bischoff's office and demanded a title shot. Eric booked Jericho for the WCW/nWo Souled Out PPV pitting him against Curt Hennig, the stipulation being the winner is granted a WCW World Title shot for the Nitro the night after the PPV. Jericho threw everything he had at Hennig in a great bout but fell just short after being distracted by Bischoff on the outside. Eric pleaded into the camera after the match that he had just come to ringside to view the match and nothing more, of course he was displaying the usual devilish grin.

* The Steiner Brothers storyline continued with Scott's heel turn and new loose cannon gimmick going over very well. The two brothers exchanged heated promos in the weeks leading up to their showdown on PPV accompanied by several vignettes showing the teams history and evolution. In a solid match Scott Steiner bested his brother Rick and came out looking in a far better position to have a great run as a singles wrestler.

* Raven held a segment on Nitro where he debuted the new Flock members, Mortis (Chris Kanyon), Maximas (Mike Awesome) and Vampiro. The segment went over very well and all guys saw their stock rise a little. It's thought the new creative team have high hopes for Raven and are building a longterm storyline around he and the Flock.

* The British Bulldog started the month continuing to job to mid to uppercard guys in the role of elevating new talent. After several losses and not much planned for the big man WCW creative were suprised when his popularity actually increased. It seems Davey Boy has once again clicked with a number of fans both live and watching at home. To reward Smith for his attitude towards putting over guys lower on the card and his ability to stay over during that he was booked to win a 15 Man Battle Royal at the PPV.

* The phenomenon that has become the Goldberg streak continues and "The Animal" has caught on fire with wrestling fans around the World. Still only being put over mid to upper card talent Goldberg's popularity has skyrocketed. He steamrolled Konnan at the WCW/nWo Souled Out PPV leaving everyone to question "Who's Next?"

* Harlem Heat started tagging again after Stevie Ray returned from a leg injury that had him out for a few weeks. The team got of to a good start picking up a win over the Faces Of Fear before going down to The Outsiders at the PPV. A split could be coming for this long time brother tag team, Booker T is clearly ready to break out at the moment while Stevie Ray still looks like he needs a partner to carry him to a good match.
