WCW 2003: Return to Glory

This is a game I am playing using Genadi's 2001 mod starting in January. I edited some things like Sid's leg breaking and such. I have played up until part of 2003. This diary will pick up a few months into 2003.

Big Papi inspired me to start up this game and also to do a diary. My game is not the same as his.

Chapters:

2001: WCW's Independence

2002: Overcoming Tragedy and Finding Our Stride

WCW's Independence (2001)

"The company that had an obvious fake Sting in which announcers and WCW wrestlers believed was really Sting.

The company that paid Bret Hart millions of dollars and when he shows up they use him as a referee? Yeah they did that.

The company that had Oklahoma, and Medusa battling for the once exciting Cruiserweight Title. Way to kill off a fun division for fans.

The company that put a guy in charge that ran Saturn, Dean Malenko, Chris Benoit, and Eddie Guerrero out of there.

The company that buried the man who made them over and over again from 1996 until recently. Ok that may still happen. Bischoff does own WCW.

The company that put their World Heavyweight Title on an actor. Yeah Arquette had a belt that great wrestlers like Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, and Rey Mysterio would never even get a shot at due to their size.

The company that brought in Rodzilla, and Karl Malone to put in a main event match. Master P, No Limit, Kiss, ICP, Chad Brock, Jay Leno, Kevin Greene, and Kyle Petty to name a few "celebrities" that they brought in and used as feature entertainers. That's not wrestling.

The company that had their World Heavyweight Champion lose by way of a finger poke. Way to bury your World Heavyweight Title!

Well this time Bischoff isn't making the decisions. He can however veto my decisions. This is the new era of World Championship Wrestling.

This new era isn't just a crowning of a new champion or anything. This time around things will go differently.

Bischoff hired me to do what he won't have much time to do. Book the shows. As owner he has more important business to worry about during the week.

However I have been in his ear for years and until recently he never gave me a shot. Now is my time to shine.

WCW will be men battling for true titles. None of that garbage Russo was trying to do with the belts. Nobody laying down to hand over a belt to a friend.

This is WCW 2001."

That was the pitch I once made to a television executive to try and get a tv deal. It worked too. However a couple months later we lost that deal and were forced to move on from Fox Sports Net.

We ended up running 1 tv show a week on Bravo and the Score. Nitro was the show we kept running. Thunder was put on the back burner.

However this story begins in June 2001. The WWF was on air every week saying how they defeated WCW. Vince McMahon would come on air and talk about how TNT and Time Warner wanted nothing to do with WCW.

Then we came back on the air in June. In late May we bought commercial time during some of the more popular television shows at the time. We promoted our return to television with Monday Nitro on Fox Sports Net.

Our first few shows weren't very good unfortunately. It showed as ratings dropped and we received emails from FSN telling us how unhappy they were.

The WWF quit mentioning us on air altogether because they figured we would kill ourselves. Then I discovered chemistry between some workers. I learned who couldn't work together due to being an awkward pairing in the ring.

Booker T and Vampiro eventually rejoined the company. The Perfect One Curt Hennig was fast moving up the card. Goldberg was killing everyone in his path. Sting was beating Flair constantly until Vampiro rejoined the company.

Goldberg at Starrcade 2001 would beat the unstoppable Scott Steiner for the World Heavyweight Title that night. Goldberg became the most well known wrestler in the world.

WCW opened a developement fed in Michigan called NWA: Michigan. The newly signed Eddie Guerrero was sent there to train. Ric Flair was also sent down to train people.

Going into the end of 2001 WCW was beginning to turn things around again. With great wrestlers training developement guys the new crop of youngsters would become good wrestlers.

Scott Steiner was poised to make a run at Goldberg to regain his title again but we had no idea what 2002 had in store for us.

Overcoming Tragedy and Finding Our Stride (2002)

Early in 2002 Curt Hennig was in a program with Kurt Angle over the US Title. Curt held the Hardcore Title but wasn't actively defending that belt. Many industry experts thought he was going to be moving into a program with Goldberg for the World Heavyweight Title next but tragedy struck.

Kurt Angle won the US Title off of Hennig. 2 weeks later Curt Hennig was found dead. He died of a drug overdose. Many in the industry were sad and paid respects at their next shows.

The Curt Hennig death shook the industry. WWF took a huge public relations hit somehow. Even though Hennig wasn't part of the WWF anymore. Vince McMahon was on CNN, and Larry King Live saying that Hennigs death was very sad. The WWF didn't employ him though and hadn't in a long time.

WCW tried to crack down on the locker room for drug use. Eric Bischoff planned to let some peoples contracts run up due to known drug use.

WCW began planning a memorial show called the WCW Perfect Memorial Cup. Diamond Dallas Page went on to win the 1st one ever with a win over Kurt Angle in the finals.

The death of Hennig should have torn WCW apart but the locker room was very receptive to the drug testing and those that weren't were talked to. Many guys were on their best behavior for a bit.

While morale was down many put on their best performances in this time. Little did anyone know that morale would be down most of this year due to the death.

Angle went on to lose the US Title to Shane Douglas when Steve Corino, and Bam Bam Bigelow ran in to distract him. A couple weeks later after not getting a rematch at Shane he began to have interviews talking about no justice in WCW. Then he attacked Diamond Dallas Page after DDP told Angle to continue working hard and it would pay off.

Diamond Dallas Page just got out of a program with Nash in which Page finally got over on the big man after their tag team didn't work out. Now he was feuding with the best technical wrestler WCW had. Angle went over and became the top contender for the World Heavyweight Title.

Lex Luger who had spent most of his time in NWA:Michigan since its opening returned to Nitro for a couple weeks before his contract expired in July.

Scott Steiner struggled to stay at the top of the card after losing his title. He lost matches to Sting, Booker T, Diamond Dallas Page, Kurt Angle, and Goldberg multiple times. Adam Edge made his WCW debut and defeated Scott Steiner a couple of times too. Internet fans knew that all of this was punishment for Steiner fighting with multiple stars repeatedly early in 2002.

Goldberg lost the World Heavyweight Title to Kurt Angle when Angle grabbed a hand full of tights after hitting a Gold Medal Slam on Goldberg to pick up the win.

When Eddie Guerrero debuted on Nitro he challenged Angle for the belt. Together they put on a match of the year canidate. Eddie wasn't even a main eventer. This match alone convinced Bischoff to allow Eddie to get a push towards the main event.

The summer of 2002 saw Sting and Kurt Angle feuding for the World Heavyweight Title. Once again Kurt was able to pull the best out of his opponent.

Adam Edge was quickly rising up the ranks when Taz was made his opponent. Adam Edge almost had him beat but Taz pulled out the victory. After the match Taz was mad and continued to assault him. This led to a feud between these guys that would last a few months.

Goldberg earned some time off during the summer. Things were building up for his rematch after he returned in June beating main eventers Taz, and Kevin Nash. Then the next week after that Goldberg was found backstage bleeding. Medical staff rushed him to the hospital.

Eric Bischoff came out to discuss how the WWF ran their business right after the Goldberg attack. Giving pushes to friends and family. Shane McMahon had beaten Kane to establish himself but wouldn't have if it wasn't for his last name. HHH wouldn't be anything if he hadn't gotten with the bosses daughter.

Bischoff was interupted in that segment though when Triple H came out. This shocked the world! He got in Bischoffs face and then told Bischoff he would prove he doesn't need to be related to anyone to become the best.

The following weeks Goldberg returned and became a loner. He accused HHH of the attack and set his sights on him. They fought at Bash at the Beach when HHH won after using a sledge hammer to knock Goldberg out. Joanie Laurer distracted Goldberg and the ref long enough for HHH.

Video footage came out revealing that it was impossible for Triple H to have been the attacker. He was hanging out with Kevin Nash talking about the old days of WWF when Nash was champ.

Scott Steiner was then targeted but after Goldberg dismantled him he found out Scott Steiner wasn't even in the building that night. Scott Steiner was back home in Michigan resting up. His contract expired shortly after that beating.

Goldberg then began the hunt again. Eddie Guerrero became a victim but once again Goldberg found out it wasn't him.

Bischoff came out one night on Nitro and gave a speech about how he can't have his workers being injured by a madman like Goldberg week in and week out. He sent Goldberg to Japan and when Goldberg returned he sent him on a 2 week vacation.

While Goldberg was gone in Japan the main event of WCW was shaken up. Hollywood Hogan returned at the side of Eric Bischoff. While it seemed he hung with Bischoff to get a title shot it didn't happen.

Hollywood Hogan was more focused on himself. Every week he came out, fought a nobody, and massaged his ego. Not once did he try for a title shot. Eric offered him a spot in a #1 contenders match but Hogan happily declined it. Overall Hogan was acting strange.

Jindrak & O'Haire dominated a tag division that had Kronik, Legion (Rick Steiner, and Road Warrior Animal), and Kaz Hayashi & Yang. Jindrak & O'Haire defended against Eddie Guerrero & Rey Mysterio Jr. in which they won convincingly. They looked unbeatable.

The cruiserweight title was held by Rey Mysterio Jr. almost all year as well. Chavo, Kaz Hayashi, Jamie Knoble, and Shane Helms all had their shots at the belt and lost. Kenta Kobayashi even had a shot and lost. Going into 2003 Rey Mysterio Jr. looked to have restored prestige to a once forgotten title.

Shane Douglas, and Steve Corino formed an alliance. Corino didn't realize it but it was a very one sided alliance. Shane would make ring side appearances with Corino but never got involved. Corino would blatantly get involved in Shanes matches helping him retain the title.

Vampiro floundered around without doing much. He attacked Sting a few times during his matches. It almost appeared that Vampiro had no place on the roster. Little did anyone know that he was being punished for causing problems backstage.

Booker T went into a program with Triple H in which Booker T didn't want some outsider taking his place. Booker T felt he was in line for a title shot. Triple H looked like the stronger wrestler in this feud and proved it in the end with a clean win over Booker at Starrcade.

Diamond Dallas Page got sick of Lance Storm coming out and ripping into America. Storm came out and had the Canadian National Anthem played week in and week out. DDP said it was great to have pride but to tear into this great country he wouldn't have it. At Starrcade Page beat Storm and waved the US flag proud.

Eddie Guerrero had been trying to help Rey Mysterio by offering advice and exercises to try in order to become bigger and better. Kevin Nash one week saw this and told them both that they would never be anything in this business because they are nothing but cruiserweights. Rey Mysterio picked up a win on Nash with Eddies help.

The next week Nash destroyed Eddies nephew Chavo by hitting 3 jacknifes in a row on him. After the match Nash challenged Eddie at Starrcade and got his match. Eddie went on to win after hitting the 5 star frog splash. Nash was shocked by Eddies clean win over him.

Goldberg found out it was Taz who had attacked him and it culminated in a hardcore match at Starrcade. Goldberg was ruthless. He had threated to prove he was more aggressive than Taz. Taz was speared into the stage which collapsed on both men at the end. With both guys laid out Goldberg was still on Taz and the ref made the count. Goldberg had won a brutal bloody contest.

Kurt Angle held the title most of the year. Edge challenged Kurt to a title match at Starrcade after a strong winning streak. The match seemed to be the best match of Edges career. Angle was speared twice in this match. Angle however would eventually win with an ankle lock submission.

The Turning Point (2003)

On the first Nitro of 2003 Eric Bischoff came out for a State of WCW speech. In this speech Bischoff touched on the titles and vowed that they would all be represented at the next Nitro when they were defended. The #1 contender for the World Heavyweight Title would have to win a 20 man battle royal tonight though.

Kurt Angle came out furious that he would have to defend his title on Nitro. Angle didn't understand why Bischoff was going to put him in a high profile match on free tv.

All the top guys were in this battle royal. Goldberg, Sting, Booker T, DDP, Adam Edge, Eddie Guerrero, etc., etc. Booker T ended up winning finally by eliminating Triple H last.

Eddie Guerrero told Chavo Guerrero that they should team up and go for tag team gold over the next month or so. Chavo accepted and said they should be known as Los Guerreros.

Kronik got the Nitro title shot at Jindrak & O'Haire but came up short once again. Jindrak & O'Haire we being talked about as future singles superstars. Kurt was seen telling them backstage that they should think about singles runs.

Shane Douglas would defend his belt against Diamond Dallas Page on Nitro. DDP was injured going into the match when Corino, and Douglas jumped him backstage. It made no difference though as DDP hit the Diamond Cutter and picked up the pinfall win for the belt.

Eddie Guerrero was to defend the television title against Lance Storm. Storm ended up winning after a superkick laid out Eddie. Storm celebrated on each turnbuckle. This was an amazing match that the fans craved more of.

The Cruiserweight Title was on the line too and nobody thought Rey Mysterio could lose it. Shane Helms was not one who had much momentum going into this match but he had taken Rey to the limit multiple times before without quite getting over the hump. This night though would be his shining moment. When he won after hitting the vertabreaker Rey raised Helms hand.

With things shaken up a bit early in 2003 Goldberg still had personal vendettas to take care of. Taz was in the middle of a match with Sting and Goldberg came down to attack Taz. Taz ran and was counted out of the ring giving Sting the win.

The following week Goldberg attacked Taz before his match with Diamond Dallas Page and Taz would lose that match easily.

Shane Douglas, and Steve Corino asked Kanyon if he would like to join their alliance. Kanyon would accept saying he wanted revenge on DDP.

Triple H and Kevin Nash began teaming up. 1st on their list of opponents seemed to be Rick Steiner, and Road Warrior Animal. Rick and Animal came out saying they weren't going to allow a newly formed team to come in and without earning it get title shots. Nash and Triple H dominated this feud thru January and February.

Booker T who had won the match lost on Monday Nitro the following week. Angle had to cheat to win though. Sting was seen watching from the top of the ramp. The week after losing the match Booker T demanded a rematch at Kurt Angle. Angle came out and told him that he had already beat him. Sting was then seen watching from the crowd up in the nose bleed section.

Bischoff in order to settle this came out and announced Sting vs Booker T for a #1 contender. Sting went on to lose by count out when he just walked out quietly. The industry freaked out thinking this was typical WCW swerve booking.

Sting was sent on vacation for a month. Booker T would give Angle some hard fought bouts. Even scoring a pinfall victory in a tag match before their big payoff match in February.

Hulk Hogan would go on to win the WCW Perfect Memorial Cup with a pinfall over Eddie Guerrero in the finals.

January and February saw very little of Hollywood Hogan. He was the driving force between Triple H and Kevin Nash teaming up because Hogan said no team would ever be able to stop those two. Triple H and Nash liked Hogans thinking.

Bischoff called out Hogan at the final Nitro in February and asked him why he had been acting so strange. Hogan came out and told Eric not to worry about it. Eric said that it was so hard to reach Hogan and just didn't want to lose Hogan to New York. Hogan promised that while business was being done it wasn't with New York.

Hogan promised that when he returned from vacation everything would become clear. Eric just stood their confused.

This is where WCW stands going into March 2003. Will it be a return to glory? Only time will tell.

Why WCW?

So you bring in one of your rivals biggest stars and slap him into a tag team after he has beaten some of your own top stars? Triple H and Kevin Nash in the tag division surely can't help them. What good is putting them in matches with Kronik and other face teams?

Goldberg has spent months looking for his mystery attacked and has finally found the guy who knocked him out and left him bloody. So he beats the guy in match after match for two months. Time to move on to something else? It doesn't appear as so.

Hollywood Hogan rejecting title shots over and over again? This isn't in his character whether face or heel. It doesn't make sense. How will you pull this together to have it make sense? Even if you do though what is the point?

Shane Douglas has the North Eastern Alliance on his side. Kanyon who is about as over as Shane is serving as a lackey to the Franchise. Then Steve Corino who could be a valuable midcarder in WCW is serving as a lackey. Corino seems like the guy who could lead a group of lower card guys. So why are these guys used as a low level stable of guys in order to keep Shane Douglas interesting? All these guys should be in their own programs. Maybe the dismantling of this group will make Kanyon and Corino stars.

With WCW having many questionable things going on that confuse the IWC we have to wonder what is in store for them. Will they have another good year or will the storylines feel hurried as many predict?

This is where my diary will begin. I will begin working on the month of March but it won't be up for a few days. Also I know I need to post the roster and title histories. Those may be up tonight.

I'll be reading too, but...

WCW's Independence (2001)

The company that put a guy in charge that ran Saturn, Dean Malenko, Chris Benoit, and Eddie Guerrero out of there.

Strictly speaking, it depends on who you ask. Saturn claimed in his shoot interview that Sullivan was honest with him and said he'd never get over...but the reason they got their release was due to Mike Graham getting drunk and threatening him with a knife.

Sullivan disputes that he had no plans for them, and claims the exact opposite was true. His version of events is: he had planned to give Benoit a genuine run with the belt for at least a few months until some of the bigger names came back, and only had the "Sid's foot under the ropes" thing as he thought they might have a deal lined up with the WWF. He also points out it'd have made no sense for him to have asked Sid of all people to submit to Benoit if he planned to bury him, and that he had never done so before when he was booker even after Nancy left him for Benoit.

I know that doesn't effect your backstory but...hey! I am interested to see what happens with your diary. As a diehard WCW fan I genuinely belived they were going to slowly, but surely, turn the corner in 2001.

the backstory is really interesting and I can't wait for more.

I remember reading some of your posts in the general forum about this game. :)

Thank you. I have been having a lot of fun playing this game. Hope you enjoy the diary as much as I enjoy the game.

I'll be reading as well.

Can't wait to hear your feed back. It will be interesting seeing how our games will differ.

Yeah I have been reading a lot of wrestling books lately. "DEATH OF WCW" "WRESTLING INSANITY Shoot First" or something like that, and some others. Seems like a lot of differing stories from people inside the business even. Kevin Sullivan, and Sid have differing stories about Benoit losing and quitting/getting fired even.

Yeah... I can't get into this. Your backstory is just completely unacceptable to me based on reasons of realism. I wish you the best of luck, but I'm one reader who's bowing out.

I am assuming you mean because of the guys I have picked up in the game? My reply to this is look at what happened with the WWE. They had Bischoff, Hogan, Goldberg, and many others who people never thought would come over from WCW after the Monday Night Wars. The nWo was on WWE television even.

In wrestling all things are possible. While to you it may seem far fetched that guys are jumping to WCW that is completely ok.

The great thing about wrestling is that everyone has different ideas as to what great wrestling is, who the best wrestlers are, the best companies, styles, and many other things.

Maybe someday you will check on this thread and find that you like how things shaped up even if it didn't simulate what you thought was possible of that generation.

A little update on this project. I will be out of town this weekend so I won't be posting anything new until next week sometime.

Hogan and Bischoff were never loyal to WCW, rather their bottom line. As for Goldberg, he first went to Japan before signing a 1-year contract. Having HHH in WCW is like having Sting in the WWE. As for the nWo, you do realise that it was Hall, Nash, Michaels and Show. 4 guys who had either made their name in WWF before jumping or jumped to the WWF during the Monday Night War. Show was in WWF for several years at this point if I remember correctly.

Page beat Kanyon and Steve Corino in a handicap match after hitting multiple diamond cutters on both of them and Shane Douglas when he tried to get involved. Shane Douglas showed all month just how bad he wanted that belt. He even put a hit out on DDP. $5,000 to the man who could hurt DDP and deliver the belt to the Franchise. </p><p> </p><p> Kaz Hayashi, and Yang attempted to attack DDP but failed miserably. It caused DDP to defend against Kaz in which he won fairly easily.</p><p> </p><p> Nash and HHH were backstage when they noticed that their bags were glued down to the catering table. When they began to get mad Paul London and Brian Kendrick were laughing sitting at another table close by. Nash and HHH were mad and flipped the table. Then chased after Kendrick and London who obviously played the prank. Nash and HHH came down to ringside and challenged them. When Kendrick and London came down they were beatdown and then assaulted with chairs until they had to be stretchered out of the arena.</p><p> </p><p> The World Title picture was shrouded in mystery with Sting watching Angle every time he was showcased. Booker T was still the #1 contender though. Angle showed how paranoid he was when he would call Sting out about facing him. Sting would show but just watch him. No words were spoken which only led the commentary team to speculation. </p><p> </p><p> The tag team division looked to be the strongest it had been in years. All the new WCW teams Adam Edge & Christian, Nash & Helmsley, Los Guerreros, Legion, and even the reformed Filthy Animals. Then the older teams of Kaz Hayashi & Yang, and Kronik who were still contenders for the belts. Jindrak & O'Haire held the titles that almost everyone wanted. They successfully defended against Legion, Filthy Animals, and Los Guerreros. Los Guerreros almost won but O'Haire hit Chavo with a chair while the ref was being held back by Jindrak.</p><p> </p><p> Then there was a #1 contenders match in which Kronik won. Bischoff then came out and announced that Jindrak & O'Haire would defend against 3 other tag teams. Kronik, Los Guerreros, and Adam Edge & Christian.</p><p> </p><p> Hollywood Hogan showed up to the arena in a limo in which he appeared to be talking to someone off camera. Later in the show he was seen talking on the phone with someone and told them that they would make a run to the top of this business. Bischoff called him out and Hogan got in the ring promising that he said when he came back he would let the world know what was going on. He didn't say when exactly after he returned though.</p><p> </p><p> Hollywood Hogan came out the next week and said that the time has come to show the world where WCW's future was going. Hogan would take on anyone that WCW had to offer up. Eric Bischoff came out and told Hogan that after the next PPV Greed Hogan would face the World Heavyweight Champion in a Title match on Nitro. Hogan looked Eric in the eye and told him that would be a piece of cake.</p><p> </p><p> Bischoff was stopped by Angle backstage and asked why Eric would do that. He told him he had to worry about Sting, Booker T, and now Hollywood Hogan. Then he went on to tell Eric that this wasn't the way he should treat his champion.</p><p> </p><p> Greed opened up with the cruiserweight title on the line. Shane Helms defended the title against Billy Kidman. Helms went on to beat Kidman when Rey Mysterio Jr. accidentally hit Kidman with a running forearm while the ref was down. Helms tossed Rey out of the ring and then hit the vertabreaker on Kidman that looked terribly painful. Helms had him pinned when the ref took notice.</p><p> </p><p> Lance Storm teamed with Justin Credible to take on Legion in a tag match. Storm told them they were washed up the previous week on Thunder. They then challenged him to a tag match at Greed. He accepted and Credible appeared to be his mystery partner at Greed. Road Warrior Animal made the pin after they hit the Doomsday Device on Credible to pick up the 3 count.</p><p> </p><p> The short feud that had been built for a few weeks culminated in a tag team match where Paul London and Brian Kendrick looked impressive for rookies. The duo seemed to be a lot for the bigger team to handle. Pinning attempt after attempt for nothing. Neither of the underdogs would give up. Finally Nash and HHH both hit their finishers. Kendrick took the Jacknife as London took the Pedigree. Kendrick was pinned by Nash for the 3 count.</p><p> </p><p> Waltman had told Rey Mysterio that he wasn't anything. Sure he held a title for a long time but if Waltman had been here earlier then Rey never would have been champ. Rey took offense to this and challenged him at Greed. Waltman wasn't as quick as Rey Mysterio Jr. but did have a height advantage. Waltman managed to get some nice kicks in and even hit his signature Bronco Buster. Rey finished Waltman though when he thought he threw Rey over the top rope only to turn around into a West Coast Pop. Rey made the pin and had his hand raised high.</p><p> </p><p> The hot titles on the block the tag team titles were on the line at Greed in which the odds were against Jindrak & O'Haire. Adam Edge & Christian were probably the least deserving of a ****. Los Guerreros were in this match due to being robbed in their title match. Kronik was in this match because they won the #1 contenders match. In this elimination match Adam Edge & Christian eliminated Los Guerreros 1st. Then they were eliminated by Jindrak & O'Haire. Kronik went on to hit the High Times on both Jindrak & O'Haire to pick up the double pinfall and win the titles! The crowd wasn't into this match though. Possibly due to the winners.</p><p> </p><p> Diamond Dallas Page defended his US Title against the Franchise Shane Douglas but Corino and Kanyon were banned from ringside. Shane Douglas had many close pinning attempts. 2 pinning attempts Shane really thought were 3 counts. Page managed to hit a clothesline in which Shane also attempted a clothesline. This was just what DDP needed to mount a comeback. Then when Shane least expected DDP hit the Diamond Cutter and picked up the 3 count to retain his title.</p><p> </p><p> When Angle went to defend his title against Booker T he stopped his assault to look into the rafters a couple of times. Eventually Sting appeared in the rafters and Angle noticed. Then Booker T mounted a comeback. He proceeded to pull off the victory for the title when he hit the Harlem Hangover to get the 3 count. As Booker T celebrated with the fans Hollywood walked out on stage and signaled that the belt would be around his waist.</p><p> </p><p> Another exciting month for WCW going into April. Hogan apparently does have his sights on the World Heavyweight Title. Sting has his sights on Kurt Angle it appears but why? The Tag Team division is still up in the air with many challengers.</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="29163" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><p> <strong>Greed Card</strong></p><p> </p><p> Shane Helms over Billy Kidman for the Cruiserweight Title</p><p> Legion over Justin Credible Storm (Impact Players)</p><p> Nash & HHH over Paul London & Brian Kendrick</p><p> Rey Mysterio Jr. over Sean Waltman</p><p> Diamond Dallas Page over Shane Douglas for the US Title</p><p> Kronik over Jindrak & O'Haire, Adam Edge & Christian, and Los Guerreros for the Tag Titles</p><p> Booker T over Kurt Angle for the World Heavyweight Title</p><p> </p><p> </p></div></blockquote>

April 2003 A Lot Like Old

Chris Benoit stepped up on Nitro after Greed and requested a match with Lance Storm. Storm won when CM Punk distracted Benoit allowing Lance to roll Benoit up and get the pinfall.

Storm would beat Ron Killings a couple weeks later on Thunder. Storm came out talking about how nobody could take the Television Title off of him. Then Rey Mysterio walked out and challenged Storm to a match at Spring Stampede.

CM Punk and Benoit went on to have a back and forth feud of matches on tv for the month. CM Punk has shown a lot of potential but hasn't quite put it all together in singles action.

The Cruiserweight Champion looked very impressive this month. He scored a big win over Yoshiro Tajiri on Nitro and followed up with an even bigger win over Chris Benoit just 3 nights later on Thunder. Sure CM Punk interfered but a win is a win. In fact he beat Benoit another time in a dark match a couple weeks later without interference. Punk did come out and distract Benoit during that match though.

WCW Tag Team Gold is one of the hardest to attain. A lot of great tag teams that are all battling for the belts regularly. Kronik while they may not be the most skilled are definitely the most resiliant. They have been in more multi team tag matches to defend the belts than most and always retain the belts.

This month saw them retain their belts against the Filthy Animals, Impact Players, Misawa and Nishimura, the Great Sasuke and Jinsei Shinzaki, and at Spring Stampede they took on two teams in a three way tag match. Adam Edge and Christian Cage were the top contenders but CM Punk and Bryan Danielson earned a shot by winning a tag team battle royal the previous week.

Shane Douglas was granted a rematch for the US Title the night after Greed on Nitro. Things didn't go his way as DDP won with a surprise Diamond Cutter out of the corner when Douglas missed a charging clothesline.

Page went on to beat Monty Brown for the belt a couple weeks later in a very awkward match. Brown charged at DDP a lot and barely missed hitting the pounce at a critical time. This allowed Page to hit a Diamond Cutter and win the match retaining the title.

Hollywood invaded South Carolina when he did an online interview with WCW's official website announcing his match with DDP that night for the US Title. Hogan waisted no time in taking it to Page. Before the match Hogan, Triple H, and Kevin Nash all laid the boots to Page. Nash and Triple H picked up Page as Hogan grabbed the title and carried it to the ring for the match. Hogan show boated some. Then when he went to bounce off the ropes to hit his leg drop Page was up and hit the Diamond Cutter on a shocked Hollywood Hogan. Page made the pin and retained his title once again.

When WCW Thunder was live in Iowa DDP managed to retain his title in a match with Taz and Sean O'Haire. Post match the ****y rookie John Cena jumped the wall and attacked a celebrating Page. Brock Lesnar came down the ramp and aided Cena in destroying Diamond Dallas Page.

Just a few days later on WCW Saturday Night in New Hampshire Page had a match with Hector Garza. Earlier in the show Page demanded a shot at John Cena in a match. That is when Eric made the match with Garza and told Page he could have Cena eventually but at Spring Stampede he would be facing Shane Douglas. During the match Brock Lesnar distracted Page. Cena attempted to run in behind DDP but was caught by Page. Cena retreated and Page still managed to beat Garza.

Triple H was made number 1 contender in March before Greed. He was promised that he would get the winner of the main event from Greed at Spring Stampede. Booker T went on to beat Kurt Angle once against at Greed and knew his next opponent would be Triple H.

Triple H showed his dominance all month long in every match he took place in. He even teamed up with Vampiro and managed to score a pinfall over the Heavyweight Champion and Sting.

Eric Bischoff was trying to console a pissed off Kurt Angle on Thunder and told him that he would allow Kurt to earn a shot to be in the main event at Spring Stampede. He said in the main event that night on Thunder it would be Triple H, Eddie Guerrero, and Kurt Angle in a #1 contenders match. If Triple H lost he would be out of his shot at the title that month. The match went on and was worthy of a MOTY canidate. Triple H managed to score the win over Eddie while Kurt Angle was distracted by Stings presence at the top of the ramp.

The final show before Spring Stampede would have the Old Guard take on the Unstoppable Forces. Booker T scored the pinfall over Triple H in this match making many in the IWC assume Triple H would be the new WCW Heavyweight Champion.

SPRING STAMPEDE

In dark match action Russ Haas teamed with Chris Benoit to take on the Chain Gang. Benoit and Haas would win by DQ when John Cena wrapped his fist with a chain and assaulted Benoit with it. Brock and Cena apparently didn't care about the outcome of the match as they destroyed both Haas and Benoit.

Goldberg returned to the ring and demolished Kaz Hayashi in under 3 minutes. It was your typical Goldberg squash match. The crowd ate it up though.

Spring Stampede started on air with Chavo Guerrero Jr. coming out and challenging Shane Helms. Chavo stated that he was a former Cruiserweight Champion and had beaten some of the best before as well. Bischoff came out and made the match official for later in the show.

In filler match action Billy Kidman took on the youngster Christian Burkman. Burkman looked good in the ring but would eventually go down to a nice SSP.

Next up was a showcase of toughness. Hugh Morrus would be taking on Mitsuharu Misawa. This would end up being one of the best matches of the show. Morrus and Misawa went back and forth with very stiff action. The end would come when Hugh Morrus would hit the No Laughing Matter and pick up the pinfall.

Another filler match would see Monty Brown squash Jinsei Shinzaki in under 5 minutes with the pound. Jinsei started the match trying to be quicker than Brown but Brown is a former NFL linebacker. He can move in the ring for a big guy with power.

The Cruiserweight Title match was a very good contest that got a lot of praise for the in ring performances of both men. Helms would go on to win when Eddie Guerrero missed Shane Helms with the title and knocked out Chavo. Helms made the pin and retained his title. After the match Chavo and Eddie had a brief confrontation that didn't result in much.

The crowd erupted when Ron Killings music hit. He came out thru the crowd singing his entrance music and getting everyone pumped up. When Taz came out though he was all business and it showed in his performance. This match would conclude with a Tazzmission being applied to Killings forcing him to tap out.

It had been a month since Jindrak & O'Haire teamed up. Jindrak found his way down to the first row to watch this next contest. RVD would end up taking Sean O'Haire to the limit in this match. Sean looked very stiff in the ring and neither man sold much. O'Haire would get distracted by Jindrak outside the ring and this is what ultimately led to Van Dam getting the win with a 5 Star From Splash.

In the United States Title match Lance Storm would defend his title against Rey Mysterio Jr. Rey had several near falls and the crowd was really into this match. Each time the crowd would let out a bigger and bigger gasp. Justin Credible got up on the apron distracting the referee and Rey allowing Storm to hit Rey from behind with a german suplex and follow up with a Canadian Maple Leaf. Rey held on as long as he could but his history of knee injuries caught up with him as he had to tap out. Storm and Credible celebrated while walking up the ramp to the back.

Those coveted tag titles were defended next by Kronik in a match that was all over the place. They battled all around the ring in a fairly sloppy match. Kronik would retain by hitting the High Times on CM Punk and getting the pinfall.

Sting went on to beat Vampiro for the millionth time in a brawl that got very bloody for Vampiro. Sting risked getting counted out a few times to slam his face into the posts and steps outside the ring. It ended with a Scorpion Death Drop and a 3 count though.

Eric Bischoff must be crazy because he gave Shane Douglas another shot at the US Title. Page won fairly easily but Cena ran in and laid out Page once again. After the show Page met with the WCW website staff and told them to post his response to the attacks. "Cena I will make sure you pay with every drop of blood in my body I swear you will pay for this. You and your big dumb friend King Kong."

The lieing cheating and stealing Eddie Guerrero went toe to toe with the greatest wrestler in the world Kurt Angle. Kurt didn't hesitate to drop his Gold Medals in the corner and attack Guerrero before the bell. Every time these two guys meet in the ring it is a work of art. Both men are so good and they almost put on a match of all time canidate. Eddie would miss the 5 star frog splash which allowed Angle to put his ankle lock on and get Eddie to tap out. After the match they shook hands and went their own ways.

Triple H really took it to Booker T early in this match. Somehow T managed to rebound from a missed dropped knee by Triple H though. After the Angle vs Guerrero match many would have been surprised to find out this match was just as good. Both men left their all in the ring and just when it looked like Triple H would win after he hit a pedigree Booker T kicked out. Triple H was so furious and shocked he knocked out the referee. Then looked shocked at his own actions. He tried to wake the ref up. Another ref ran down to help wake him up. Triple H got up and T hit him with a Book End followed by an axe kick. Booker would make the pin and the other referee made the 3 count. Booker T retained in a drama filled match.

Spring Stampede was a huge success out of the Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan. All the wrestling websites praised the show and said WCW really struck gold once again with this show.

Just so everyone knows I am still going to be doing this. I know I post for this very rarely but I still enjoy this game and had a lot of ideas. Just been very busy and when I am on these boards it's usually from work.

Look for a post today sometime with another article. Then in the next couple days with a monthly recap.

WCW's Past Present and Future

Long gone are the days of the Shockmaster, and Yeti. That is a past long forgotten.

WCW Past

Known for its history WCW had the 4 Horseman, Sting, Hulk Hogan, Road Warriors, the Steiner Brothers, Lex Luger, Harlem Heat, and many other greats. They have always been proud of their past. Their more recent past isn't as great but everyone is overlooking that now.

WCW Present

Booker T, Triple H, Sting, Taz, Adam Edge, Eddie Guerrero, Christian Cage, and Kurt Angle carry the current WCW. Some argue that it's time for Sting, and Booker T to step aside and make room for the new guys. However Sting, and Booker T still produce ratings. Diamond Dallas Page is not as great as he was a couple of years ago in the ring. He just seems slower than before but pair him with Kurt Angle or Triple H and you have a great match.

WCW is arguably stronger than ever. The tag division has a lot of heat for the titles. Jindrak & O'Haire really came up in the division and seem to be ready for a singles run. John Cena is also a guy who is ready for a major title run.

WCW Future

Eventually Booker T, Goldberg, Sting, DDP, and Kevin Nash will retire or leave the company. Lucky for WCW they are grooming many guys who can step up and become tomorrows superstars. Guys like John Cena, Alex Wright,Shane Douglas, Lance Storm, Hugh Morrus, and Monty Brown are as close as a major feud with a top guy. Other guys like Daniel Bryan, Brock Lesnar, and Chris Sabin are a little farther away but could easily become main eventers in the future.

The future looks good for WCW as they even have some great wrestlers in developement that could become main eventers some day. It is a great time to be a fan of WCW.

The War

The renamed WWE is not what it once was. They are living off of their past reputation as being the #1 global promotion. Undertaker, and Kane are working a full time schedule that is exhausting. Steve Austin and the Rock are not employed by the WWE anymore. Right to Censor is one of the features of WWE programming and while fans can't stand that faction they continue to get pushed.

After Trish Stratus jumped to WCW the WWE womens division has been boring. None of the divas have been getting pushed to superstar status like before. They just cycle the womens division around giving everyone wins over everyone.

Big Show is looking to take the reigns as the top guy in the company so Undertaker can take a step back and work a lighter schedule but Vince McMahon is trying to keep Undertaker on a full time schedule.
