After two decades on top business has started to wane, the fans that grew up with the likes of Sam Strong, Rip Chord and the rest of the 1980’s SWF have now grown into angst ridden teenagers or college bound young adults. Richard Eisen refuses to listen to any of the so called critics and has even gone as far as to blame his television station for his ratings decline and stingy customers on his lack of house shows and merchandising profits. There is one man though that isn’t afraid to tell Richard Eisen its time for a new approach. His son Jerry Eisen who has just graduated from an Ivy League East Coast University has come back to the family business. When he left four years ago Richard was still living off of the 80’s boom but he’s returning to a promotion that is sinking quicker than his father is willing to come to terms with. Richard slowly looks up from the glass meeting his son with an optimistic stare. Jerry squints briefly almost trying to read his fathers thoughts. “Ahhh come on Dad you’re forty three its not the end of the world” Jerry’s guess at what was wrong makes Richard chuckle out loud as he swirls the glass in his hand before downing the last swig of wine. “No its not that Jerry its just with you finally home from the University its nice to celebrate these days as a family but it seems like we traded away Eric so you could come home” Jerry takes one final drink from his soda can before letting out a chuckle of his own before responding. “Come on Pops I know it wasn’t mom that sent him off to that ivy league football camp, he just graduated high school and already you’re sending him away.” Richard gets a bit defensive at Jerry implying he’s pushing his youngest boy too hard. “The kid is a real athlete Jerry and I’ll be damned if I don’t give him the best chances money can buy, the chances I couldn’t give you when you were younger……the chances I never had”. The mood turns somber but there is something brewing on Jerry’s mind. He knew today would be a good day to bring it up to him while their in their own home and most importantly of all mom is there to stop a war from breaking out. Jerry crushes his soda can casually and purposely leading the conversation into the sprawling, state of the art kitchen. “Listen Dad…..I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something ever since I came back home….” Richard lets out an audible sigh of frustration. His wife gently rubs his back just for a moment. She recognizes that sigh and knows its just the first stage of Richard shutting off from the world and not listening. “Really Jerry? You’ve been home and a month and already we’re going to do this?” Jerry seemed shocked and confused all at once. How could his dad possibly have any idea what he was going to say? “I don’t know what you think I wanted to talk about but I want to talk about business….bout OUR business” That was Jerry’s moms cue to lead the two men back into the comfortable setting of the living room. If their going to talk business they need to sit….atleast at first because they always wind up standing and shouting at one another before its all over. “Quite frankly Jerry I don’t know how you could possibly talk to me about….our….as you put it business. You said it yourself you’ve been home a month and haven’t been on the road for a single show. I don’t know if Starr or Danny, or even Michaels put you up to this but I don’t want to discuss business with my son who just got home for longer than a day for the first time in four years” Jerry leans in towards his father who is spread out in a giant leather chair. He looks at the carpet before quickly shooting his eyes up to meet contact with his fathers. “Dad you can’t hide from it forever. You’ve been doing this nearly on your own for longer than I’ve been alive. Everybody needs a break, everybody needs help.” Richard meets Jerry’s glare head on before cutting Jerry off in mid thought, shooting right back at him as the discussion gets more heated. “I’ve had help, their all in Japan, or Rehab or who the hell knows where their at. I’ve been down that road, help leaves and when they do you’re left with more work than if you were doing it all by yourself to begin with.” Jerry isn’t going to let him off that easy. He returns fire by cutting his dad off as their discussion has turned into a shouting match quicker than most times. “Then let ME be your help dad. I’m sure as hell not going anywhere, you spent all that money on college, I’ve been around the business for two decades myself. You hear all the time about how you do all the work yourself, you have nobody you can trust, blah blah blah let ME be your help dad” Richard knew this day would come sooner or later but the passion in Jerry’s voice was the biggest clue that this was in fact that day. He glances back at Joe who’s still staring out the window of his office. Steve speaks up.]</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Steve:</strong> Say Joe, can I get you a drink? </p><p> </p><p> [Joe slightly turns his body to face Steve with a questioned look on his face.]</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Joe:</strong> I’m uh, I’m not old enough to drink…</p><p> </p><p> [steve’s smile turns to one of awkwardness and slight embarrassment. He quickly tries to change the subject.]</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Steve:</strong> Well how bout a smoke? I got some fine Cubans if your into that sort of thing…</p><p> </p><p> [Joe glances down before looking back up in an even lower tone.]</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Joe:</strong> I’m not old enough to smoke either…</p><p> </p><p> [With that statement Steve quietly sets his glass back down on the bar and walks behind his desk. He reaches out shaking hands with Joe before quickly sitting. Steve is shuffling paperwork while Joe uncomfortably stares at him. Steve finally meets eye contact from over his shuffled papers.]</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Steve:</strong> Look Joe I’m going to get right to the point. The company has looked over your files and although your offer to our company is more than above asking price I just don’t know how we can get a deal done. You don’t have any television, you don’t have any pay per view. Although your offer is generous without any sort of media you wouldn’t have a need for a production company and at the end of the day we’d be tied into a contract we would actually lose money on….</p><p> </p><p> [Joe shifts in his chair across the desk. He pulls at his HGC t shirt before stammering out a response to the rejection.]</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Joe:</strong> I’ve been to every major production company in Los Angles and they all tell me the same thing. Without television they won’t take me on as a client. My people told me that you were the guy to get things done. I’m going to leave you with a blank check. You write what it will take to lock you guys in as my production company…</p><p> </p><p> [Joe whips out his check book tearing off a blank check and sliding it across the large, oak wood desk. Steve lets out a sigh before clutching the check. He stares at the check and then stares back at Joe. Finally the silence is broken.]</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Steve:</strong> Joe who do you have securing your television rights as of now?</p><p> </p><p> [Joe thought for a second before curiosity responding.]</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Joe:</strong> Well.....….me….</p><p> </p><p> [steve took the blank check in towards him and starting jotting something down on it. A few moments later he slid it back over towards Joe.]</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Steve:</strong> That’s how much I would ask right now for you to lock this company down for production of Hollyweird Grappling Company. Now I want you to double that amount, that’s the amount I’m going to be asking when I secure you the television rights you haven’t been able to get on your own…</p><p> </p><p> [Joe stared at the number, it was bigger than he had expected in the first place and now Steve was going to ask for that to be doubled if he could secure television rights. He sat the check down and stared across as Steve for a moment. He snatched the pen and scribbled his name onto the check sliding it back to Steve.]</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Joe:</strong> Consider this your down payment and you’ll get the other half when you get me that television deal. </p><p> </p><p> [With that Joe got out and straightened out his wrinkly HGC t shirt and outstretched his hand for a handshake. Steve took a moment to respond staring at the check before slowly rising and offering a lifeless handshake. As Joe left the ten story high office Steve flopped back down into his leather chair. I have handed the reigns of this promotion completely over to him, giving him one hundred percent control of it…</p><p> </p><p> [With that Richard turns it over to the P.R department slowly dragging himself away from his adoring press…..or so he thinks. Jerry meets him at the end of the podium with a handshake and half hug. Richard glares at Jerry before letting out another of his sighs.]</p><p> </p><p> “There is just no pleasing you is there Jerry? I send you to the finest schools, I literally CREATE an entire company just for you to run, I call a press conference, I might as well have anointed you the Jesus of our business and yet just minutes after all that here we are and once again your asking for MORE. Tell me Jerry, what in the hell is it going to take to make you happy?”</p><p> </p><p> Jerry shared his fathers temper, he shared the trait to just blurt out what he was thinking regardless. He was an Eisen and it was their birth right to spout off whatever they thought without anyone being able to call them on it. Jerry lashed right back at his fathers question. </p><p> </p><p> “I want to keep your company from sinking, you’re the largest most successful company in the world in our business and yet in five years you’re going to be sharing an area with NEW. Do you know what changed from the late seventies through the eighties? NOTHING, you worked one gimmick for ten years and since there was no cable, no twenty four hour news, no internet you got away with it. The world is different, nobody cares about the things they cared about in the eighties. I’ll ask you again Dad LET ME HELP YOU”</p><p> </p><p> Richard was seething and his son knew it. Jerry was breathing heavily after just laying it all on the line to his father. He had wanted to say it for years but it was now or never. He wasn’t going to let his father buy his silence no matter how big that purchase was in this case. Richard just glared back and Jerry.</p><p> </p><p> “You got it all figured out don’t you? I tell you what I’m pulling out Chief, I’m pulling out Andrews, you’re on your own. Build your own staff in New England. You’re young, you’re saying I’m not with the times so I tell you what. Lets do this the short attention span way. Three months come back to me at the end of the year if you have managed to make a profit with that promotion running things your way with your guys then I’ll promote you”</p><p> </p><p> [With that Richard walked off leaving Jerry’s head spinning. This wasn’t about business, this wasn’t even about family, this was about two men who were cut from the same cloth from two completely different generations.
