Fight League Brazil Hire New President of Operations

Blurcat can exclusively reveal today that Fight League Brazil, the premier South American MMA organization has hired the relatively unknown Simon Lambden to head up their operations. It's reported his duties will include the management of fighters, the production of events (including match making) as well as ensuring the finances remain stable. Blurcat's Michael Hughes was able to catch up with new President of Operations Simon Lambden and FLB owner Clodomil Dualib;

MH: Thank you both for joining me for this interview. First of all Mr Dualib; what was your reasoning for hiring Mr Lambden for this position?

CD: (via translator) Well I beleive in the interview process he showed great enthusiasm along with tremendous ideas for the position. I beleive out of all the candidates we saw, he has the most potential to move our company to the top of the MMA world.

MH: Interesting, and Mr Lambden; we know very little about you. Could you please tell us your background?

SL: Well the main thing to know is i'm an MMA fan. I'm not someone who needs to be surrounded by people to tell me the difference between a side kick and an axe kick. I used to fight before I suffered injuries that unfortunately stopped my career so I understand the fighters. This may be my first booking role but I fully beleive I have the skills capable to make this company great.

MH: Fight League Brazil is considered a very up and coming company with a sound financial base. Does this add any pressure to your role?

SL: There will always be pressure at any level and I wouldn't want a job where there was none. Pressure drives us to succeed and that's exactly what I will do here.

MH: Who do you see as key members of the roster?

SL: Without doubt there are stars across the board. Affonso Villar is probably one of the best pound for pound fighters on the planet but it dosen't stop there. Gladstone Lopes, Roberto Aldez, [Gabriel] Gallego...the roster is full of talent. They're are young stars waiting to blossom too. Murilo Satinho is someone I look forward too seeing just from a fans point of view.

MH: And finally what are your plans for your first few days in the company?

SL: Well first things first I think we need to flesh out the roster. We're a rising company and so I want to expand our relatively thin rosters so there is more to play with. Other than that we will prepare for the next show, I can announce it is to be held on Saturday 17th January and will be entitled "FLB 7: New Era". There will be full announcements on the match ups in the coming days but until then I can say they're will be an 8 man title tournament on the card.

MH: Well thank you both very much for your time and good luck for the future.

OOC: Ok so I am not very knowledgable with the defaut database but ive really enjoyed the demo with FLB so am going to give this a try. I will do some world updates occasionally and up next will be the roster. I went for a lucky dip on skills and ended up with:

eye for talent 7

FLB 7: New Era Announced + Roster Expansion

http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/7063/flb7.jpg

New Fight League Brazil president Simon Lambden has announced his first show, and the highlight is the Heavyweight Title Tournament. In the press conference, Lambden said this;

SL: I am very excited to announce Fight League Brazil's first event under my guidance. FLB 7: New Era will feature as the main attraction, an 8 man one night tournament to determine the Heavyweight Champion. Fighters will be seeded according to their company ranking, meaning champion Elzo Alves Moura will be seeded number 2. They're will be 3 non-tournament matches on this card.

Blurcat also obtained information that Simon Lambden has approached plenty of fighters about coming to FLB to ply their trade. Alot of the focus is on overseas talent as Lambden is looking to expand the market. Using his knowledge of the European and American market, expect Lambden to bring in plenty of new faces from those regions. Blurcat will have more on this when signings are announced.

Semi Final Winner 1 vs. Semi Final Winner 2 (Heavyweight Title) - Satinho

Should be an epic war between Satinho and Moura, but Grande Ursa is just too strong.

Rubenilson Augusto (6-1) vs. Denilson da Cunha (10-3)

Could be fight of the night, da Cunha pulls it out late

Semi Final 1: Winner of QF 1 vs. Winner of QF 2 - Satinho

Marinho Gomes (6-1) vs. Marco de Almeida (26-13)

Good test against a veteran that Gomes wins fairly handily

Juan Puga (11-7) vs. Arkan Gleiser (7-3)

QF 1: Gladstone Lopes (12-0-1) vs. Marcelo Boccolli (12-5)

Fight League Brazil 7: New Era - Live Coverage

http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/7063/flb7.jpg

Hello and welcome to Blurcats exclusive coverage of Fight League Brazil 7: New Era. We have a fantastic night of fights for you, including the Heavyweight Title Tournament. The current champion, Elzo Alves Moura will be up first tonight, who will look to prove that he is rightful champion despite his 2nd place ranking. There can be no arguing that one of the likely semi finals will see Murilo Santinho fight Gladstone Lopes in what will be an exciting fight. Of course both men have to secure victories before they could meet, but the odds are stacked in their favour. The young talent is also on show with Marinho Gomes and Rubenilson Augusto both trying to prove their ready to shoot up the ranks.

With that said the fighters are in the ring and ready for our first fight. Let’s run down the rules of FLB;

Non title fights are 3, 5 minute rounds while tonights title fight will consist of 5, 5 minute rounds. Each round is scored on a 10 point system. The big difference between FLB and the promotions you may be used too, is that soccer kicks, stomps, knees to grounded opponents are all legal, and encouraged. Buckle up, it’s time to start the show;

Elzo Alves Moura vs. Kerlon Guerra de Bastos (Quarterfinal 1)

Round 1

Bastos starts off aggressive, sensing he needs to put some doubt in the mind of the favourite. He hit’s a jab, but Moura is quick to get in close and attempt to grapple. Quickly Moura shows his dominance and wrestles Bastos back to the ropes but he fights back and switches positions. Some dirty boxing, but Bastos then quickly backs away wanting to keep some distance. Some good counter punching from Moura now as he hits swift clean shots. Bastos now is countering, and peppers Moura with some strong shots! The two exchange some softer shots as the round comes to a close.

A very hard round to score, and it seemed very surprising that Moura abandoned the grappling game so early. His counter striking though, probably was enough to win a close round.

Round 2

A sloppy opening to the round sees both fighters miss their opening strikes. They both fire off shots at the same time, neither connecting properly. Both fighters swing wildly, and Bastos is hit hard!! He falls the ground and Moura quickly secures side control. He hit’s a knee to the side and attempts to slip behind Bastos to take his back but the underdog defends well. Bastos makes a desperate attempt to pull guard but his failure has left him open and Moura is raining down rights. The referee waits seemingly forever, but eventually does come in to stop the fight!

The Winner via TKO (Strikes) in 2:40 of the 2nd Round - Elzo Alves Moura

A great 2nd round performance by Moura who capitalised on Bastos’ aggressive mentality. As soon as he was dropped, Moura was nothing but comfortable. He advances to the semi final.

Key Stat: Moura was clinical on the ground, landing 7 out of 7 (100%) of his ground strikes.

Sergio do Vale vs. Josimar Martins (Quarterfinal 2)

Round 1

Back and forth counters open the round, with neither men landing when they strike first. Josimar Martins is a slight favourite in this fight, but many MMA experts believe it is a virtual coin toss as to the winner. Do Vale tries to score a takedown, but in truth he was never going to get it with such a poor set up and they end up clinched. They break almost instantly, neither wanting to get involved in the clinch game. A couple more counters from each fighter, and then Martins jumps into the pocket. Some more missed strikes, with good head movement from both fighters and the round comes to an end.

Sloppy striking from both, meant the only real strikes of note were soft counters from both men. Martins takedown defence probably edged him the round.

Round 2

The fighters start the 2nd round as they ended the first. Both missing strikes and Do Vale landing a soft counter. Martins ducks some wild swings and hits back with the strongest hits of the fight so far but Do Vale is able to weather the storm. Yet more missed strikes and the crowd begin to show their frustration. Do Vale wants to get in close again and does so. He misses with another wild strike. Do Vale’s striking has been very wild, and Martins can see it coming from a mile. Both men are gassing heavily here in the 2nd round, and Do Vale pulls Martins in to a grapple and keeps it there for the final 10 seconds.

Once again nothing to choose in a poor round of fighting. Martins edged the counter striking, so if pushed you’d have to give the round to him.

Round 3

Do Vale’s corner were furious with the way he has been conducting the fight so far. They told him to go and finish it now, because he was behind on the score cards. Martins is the first to look for the finish though, as a potential knock out punch misses by inches and he is treated to a counter strike instead. Do Vale moves in closer once again, but both men are looking very lethargic. Martins covers up to block a couple of big strikes. It seems Do Vale really took in what his corner said. Now they both grapple. Martins hit’s a couple of jabs, a rarity that the initiating strikes have landed. The fight ends with Martins on the front foot.

We will go to the judges score cards for the decision

Judge 1 scores the fight - 30-27

Judge 2 scores the fight - 29-28

And Judge 3 scores the fight - 30-27

All for the winner via Unanimous Decision, Josimar Martins

A very average match that failed to keep the audience’s captivation. Martins counter strikes was clearly enough to persuade the judges over Do Vale’s aggressiveness.

Key Stat: Both men scored under 40% striking, with Do Vale only hitting 29% of his attempts.

“Grande Urso” Murilo Santinho vs. Raimundo Pinheiro (Quarterfinal 3)

Round 1

The bell rings, and many peoples dark horse, Murilo Santinho is now in action. Pinheiro comes out feinting but Santinho isn’t falling for it and just misses with a body kick. Santinho quickly shoots in for the takedown, but Pinheiro shows good elusiveness to step away. Santinho moves in, and he has a Muay Thai clinch hooked! Pinheiro needs to find a way out quick. Oh!! Santinho hit’s a big elbow to head, and follows it up by driving his knee into the face of Pinheiro. He’s out cold!

The Winner via Knock Out (Knee) in 2:29 of the 1st Round - “Grande Urso” Murilo Santinho

Murilo Santinho sends out a clear message with this quick knockout win. He’s got power and if he can’t take you down and knock out out there, he can do it standing too. A wonderful performance from the young undefeated star.

Key Stat: The elbow and strike from the clinch, were the only 2 landed strikes of the fight.

“The Brazilian Bomber” Gladstone Lopes vs. Marcelo Boccoli (Quarterfinal 4)

Round 1

The top seed is in action as the fight gets under way. Boccoli starts strong showing quick movement and striking. Lopes hasn’t found his range yet, missing on his strikes. I wonder if either man watched Santinho, the man who awaits them in the semi final, destroy Pinheiro. Lopes attempts to grapple but Boccoli is quick to move away. The round ends much like the 2nd semi final, with both men missing and suffering counter strikes instead.

Not the most exciting round, but Boccoli the 8th seed certainly had the advantage in striking and in our eyes took the round 10-9.

Round 2

Lopes misses again, and is struck with a few quick strikes. It’s key to note that when Boccoli counters, he does so with combinations not just single strikes. Boccoli is easily controlling the distance as every attempt to get close by Lopes is met by Bocolli keeping him at bay. Boccoli switches to a traditional stance. Some more counters by Bocolli. He isn’t actively looking for his own strikes, but relying on his speed to counter and it’s working. A feint from Lopes brings the round to a close.

Lopes looks very disappointed and disheartened as he retreats to his corner. Every attempt to get close and strike Boccoli seems to be failing. He needs to find something in the 3rd round or else he’ll be losing his honour of the companies top ranked heavyweight.

Round 3

Boccoli counters again, with 2 quick flurries of strikes and then feints out Lopes who just manages to avoid the follow up strike. Interestingly, Boccoli who has been stepping back the entire fight, jumps into the pocket of Lopes. Can’t quite understand these tactics. Both men exchange some weak strikes. Lopes looks for a big strike but misses and eats another counter. Boccoli mixes it up, moving back and then jumping right into the pocket again. Boccoli throws a couple of jabs and jumps back out again to end the round.

The fight goes to the judges decision:

All three judges score the fight 30-27 for the winner by Unanimous Decision, Marcelo Boccoli

I don’t think many saw this coming. The number 1 seed overthrown by the 8th seed. A deserved victory though. The fight was unspectacular but Boccoli had a gameplan and it worked. Some questionable tactics in the 3rd could of spoiled it for him, but Lopes did not have the killer instinct to go out and go for the win.

Key Stat: The “Brazilian Bombers” bombs were duds today, landing just 1 strike in the entire fight.

Juan Puga vs. Arkan Gleiser (Light Heavyweight)

Round 1

The first non tournament fight of the night is underway and hopefully can raise the crowd after the disappointing fight just witnessed. Puga quickly initiates a grapple and attempts to push Gleiser against the ropes. He fails however and Gleiser gains some control over his opponent. They switch dominance again though, as Gleisers off balance strikes miss. Puga this time succeeds in pushing Gleiser against the ropes. Puga misses the foot stomp. Puga changes levels and gets a takedown. He is in full guard. His first attempt to pass fails, but he manages to get one leg out and into half guard. That’s where it ends though as Gleiser blocks an attempt to gain side control and the round is over.

A good round for Puga and the takedown will certainly of secured some points. Gleiser fought hard but ultimately the quality of Puga pushed him to win the round.

Round 2

Gleisers corner told him to strike from a distance in this round, but he didn’t take much notice as he leaves a weak leg kick out there and is caught. He manages to block the takedown though. There is more conviction to Gleisers striking this round, though none are yet to land. Puga shoots, and avoids a counter strike to complete the takedown. He ends up in half guard. Gleiser pushes off and starts scrambling, but Puga was quick and secures side control. Big elbows from Puga, but Gleiser is defending them well. Puga goes for the mount but ends up taking Gleiser’s back instead. With 2 minutes left of the round, Gleiser is in big trouble. The strikes rain down, and Gleiser is getting destroyed…it’s over!

The Winner via TKO (Strikes) in 3:37 of the 2nd Round - Juan Puga

A comfortable performance from Juan Puga as he controlled from start to finish. A bad choice to scramble from Gleiser ultimately was the key moment in the fight. He lost out, and Puga gained side control and from there the fight was done.

Key Stat: Juan Puga was 100% in total striking (1 for 1 standing, 10 for 10 ground)

Josimar Martins vs. Elzo Alves Moura (Semi Final 1)

Round 1

Here we go, the champion looks to advance to the finals in the first semi of the night. They both exchange counter strikes, and Moura then looks for a quick takedown. Like his first fight, Moura’s takedown fails. Let’s see if he abandons that game again like he did earlier. Moura counter jabs and jumps in close to Martins. They grapple and Moura pushes Martins against the ropes. Not much is happening, as Moura just keeps him pressed up against the cage. A burst of life sees Moura score a takedown, but there’s not much time to do anything with it. Some blocked strikes ends the first round.

A solid round from Moura saw him control the striking, grappling, and ground game. A definite round win for him and it was good too see he didn’t abandon the takedown this time.

Round 2

Martins opens up strong with some big right hands!! Moura survives it though, and somehow doesn’t even seem shaken. Martins keeps coming though, strong punches penetrating Moura’s defence. Moura seems to regain his composure ducking some strikes, and hitting back with his own. The strikes exchange back and forth for the rest of the round.

A much improved round from Martins. He got the most significant strikes of the fight by far and in the first couple of minutes it seemed like the chance was there to knock Moura off his feet. Somehow the champion survived but he did drop the round.

Round 3

Don’t expect Martins to stay so aggressive, his corner told him to go back to countering. After last round, that seems like strange advice. Moura starts the final round the stronger. He is the one countering successfully. Once again though he seems to have dropped any thoughts of going to the ground. As I say that, he does attempt a weak looking takedown which is easily blocked. Martins dances around the ring, trying to lure Moura in. Moura seems content to wait for his time though. Moura shoots in, and while the takedown is stuffed, he does have Martins pushed up against the ropes. Two powerful foot stomps land, and Moura presses him against the ropes looking to run out the clock. Moura moves back, theres not much time left now. They finish apart, no late flurry from either. We go to the judges:

All three judges score the fight 29-28 for the winner by Unanimous Decision, Elzo Alves Moura

Not the greates of fights from the champion, but the first and second rounds were won by his ground game. An edgy win, and a loss that Martins will be utterly disappointed with as it was there for the taking.

Key Stat: Moura’s striking while unspectacular, was fairly accurate at 60%

Marinho Gomes vs. Marco de Almeida (Middleweight)

Round 1

Young prospect Marinho Gomes looks to go past Marco de Almeida in our 2nd non tournament fight. Both fighters hit weak strikes to open the ground. Out of nowhere Gomes ducks a jab and hit’s a wild spinning back kick, and de Almeida is on the floor! Gomes is in quick, stomps rain down, and he hits some vicious kicks! De Almeida is being destroyed and the referee stops it! Brutal Annihilation!

The Winner via TKO (Strikes) in 1:11 of the 1st Round - Marinho Gomes

A fantastic performance from Marinho Gomes in what is a strong contender for fight of the night. Unfortunately due to it being TKO stoppage and not a clean knockout he can not win that honour. But the pure speed of the finish was tremendous and this prospect will have raised some attention in the middleweight division.

Key Stat: Gomes was vicious when unloading with stomps and kicks. He was also very accurate, hitting all 6 of his attempts.

Marcelo Boccoli vs. “Grande Urso” Murilo Sandino (Semi Final 2)

Round 1

Murilo Santinho in action again after his devastating knock out win earlier in the night, but Boccoli will be looking for another upset. Santinho draws in Boccoli, but fails to connect with a strike. Both men avoid each others attacks. Uh oh…Santinho gets Boccoli into the devastating Muay Thai clinch he used to finish Pinheiro earlier tonight. Another vicious knee, and Santinho claims another vicious knockout!!! Violent!

The Winner via Knockout (Knee) in 2:36 of the 1st Round - “Grande Urso” Murilo Santinho

Another brutal 1st round knockout, and Murilo Santinho has put on a Muay Thai clinic today. He moves on to the final in entertaining fashion and our final is set. Murilo Santinho will take on current champion Elzo Alves Moura.

Key Stat: Neither man landed a punch in the fight, through a combined 12 attempts.

Rubenilson Augusto vs. Denilson da Cunha (Light Heavyweight)

Round 1

Another young exciting prospect in action here, as Augusto opens the fight by moving right to the centre. Augusto circles, avoiding a jab. He presses on da Cunha but neither man is actively looking to engage right now. Da Cunha takes two very hard leg kicks which shake the base of him. Augusto presses with the jab as an uneventful round ends.

Not much happened in the round, but Augusto was the more aggressive and the two leg kicks he scored at the end probably did enough to win the round.

Round 2

The corner man was telling da Cunha to really press this round. Let’s see if he does so. Augusto presses forward, they both strike but neither lands. Da Cunha is pressed against the ropes with some big strikes! He goes down, victory is close for Augusto! The referee stops it!

The Winner via TKO (Strikes) in 2:15 of the 2nd Round - Rubenilson Augusto

Not a great fight, but Augusto waited patiently for the opening and pounced. He pushed his opponent against the ropes and didn’t stop until the referee pulled him away. Very good win for Augusto, but not a great overall match for the fans.

Key Stat: Denilson da Cunha was woeful in his striking, landing no strikes in the fight.

“Grande Urso” Murilo Santinho vs. Elzo Alves Moura (Tournament Final, Heavyweight Title)

Round 1

Here we go, it’s time for the final and we will find out who will be the Heavyweight Champion. Santinho has looked by far the most impressive, but there’s something to be said for a champion who can edge out a tough win. Santinho opens strong, avoiding a strike, and countering with a good combination and a strong right hook. This man strikes with power. Santinho attempts his first takedown of the night but it‘s stuffed. Many forget he is a ground and pound fighter. Moura presses in and shoots for a takedown of his own. A good sprawl by Santinho and he has Moura turtled. He lands big shots! The fight could be…over!!! The referee stops it.

The Winner via TKO (Strikes) in 2:14 of the 1st Round and new Heavyweight Champion - “Grande Urso” Murilo Santinho!

Another first round win for Santinho earns him the title and no one could argue based on tonights performances. With the new heavyweights brought in, it’s certain he’ll face some tests in the future, but for tonight it’s all about the young undefeated star who’s earned his way to the top.

Key Stat: Not many strikes were thrown, but Santinho landed 80% of his standing strikes.

And that concludes the live coverage of FLB 7: New Era for this evening. Before we finish though, $250 bonuses are awarded to the following;

FLB 7: New Era Autopsy

With Fight League Brazil 7 in the books, we now take a look at what is next for the competitors, and the company:

Murilo Santinho: Having won the title, keeping his undefeated streak in tact and looking good doing it, Santinho can sit back on top of the division and relax. With no clear contender right now, it will likely be the winner of a future fight (posibally involving Norman Pike) to determine who will next fight "Grande Urso"

The rest of the Heavyweight division: With dissapointing performances from two of the best in the division, the only real winner in the tournament was Marcelo Bocceli who got the huge upset win over Gladstone Lopes. Expect him to be rewarded with another fight against quality, maybe being the opponent for fallen champion Elzo Alves Moura.

Fight League Brazil: It is understood that tournaments will be held roughly twice a year, with more traditional MMA shows being held in between. So up next you will likely see some of the new talent brought in, aswell as quality fights from other divisions. Expect the highly rated middleweight division to feature highly as FLB get their name out.

Young Guns: Marinho Gomes and Rubenilson Augusto both coming off good wins to propel them up the divsions. More testing is needed though so expect them both to face tough vets once again as they make they're names.

News and Notes:

  1. Raimundo Pinheiro and Denilson da Cunha's contracts are both due to expire after the next fight. FLB have begun negotiations to extend.

  2. Pinheiro is a popular man with both Marcelo Boccoli and Josimir Martins requesting to fight him. It is expected with Boccoli set to face tougher competition, Martins will be granted the request.

Blurcat Monthly Review

With the first month of 1998 in the books, Blurcat looks back at a rather unspectacular month of MMA. With only one show from an established promotion (FLB), there is nothing much to report on.
