Fight League Brazil 8: Samba Fighting - Live Coverage

http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/1688/flb8.jpg

It’s that time again as we prepare ourselves for a night of MMA action. Fight League Brazil 8 is sure to be a good ride as we see quality across the board. The main event pits Braulio Moura against Joaquim Fontes. A great opportunity to see a striker against a grappler. Fontes has some of the best submissions in the business, but you know that if Moura gets the clinch then the fight won’t last very long.

A key theme for tonight is seeing overseas fighters. For the first time in it’s history, FLB has opened the doors to American, European and Asian fighters. It will be interesting to see how the newcomers adapt to Brazils’ rather lawless MMA rules.

We are ready for our first fight of the night:

Guillermo “T-Bone” Morales vs. Euclydes Filho (Light Heavyweight)

Round 1

Ladies and gentleman we are underway as the undefeated Guillermo Morales takes on Euclydes Filho. Both men looking to use their jabs early to find the range. Morales quickly pulls Filho in tight. Morales picks him up and slams him to the ground. He’s a wrestler, so feels comfortable on the ground but he has to watch out for the jiu-jitsu of Filho. Morales easily slips out of guard and into side control. He’ll feel a lot more comfortable now. A submission attempt from Morales, but he can’t hook the Americana. Filho tries to pull guard but isn’t anywhere close. A knee from Morales sets up some big strikes, and the referee stops it! It’s over.

The winner via TKO (Strikes) in 4:02 of the 1st Round - Guillermo “T-Bone” Morales

A very good debut from Guillermo Morales. He took Filho down with ease, and looked even more at home passing the guard. The strikes came in and the fight was over before Filho could even attempt to get some offence going.

Key Stat: Morales landed 7 out of 7 (100%) of his ground strikes

“The Fight Night Delight” Delroy Rhodes vs. Marcelo “The Puma” Oberto (Welterweight)

Round 1

The first American talent to fight in FLB is in the ring and ready to go. Highly rated prospect Rhodes should beat the experienced Oberto but anything can happen in MMA. Rhodes opens up with a leg kick that stings the audience! Now he shows good boxing as he counters with a combination. Bright start from Rhodes. Another leg kick is then followed by Oberto’s first strike, a tame jab. Oberto tries to get closer to Rhodes but the American is too quick to back away. They begin to grapple. Oberto ends the round winning the dirty boxing exchanges.

A good start from Rhodes, and despite Oberto winning the closing exchanges, you’d have to give the round to The Fight Night Delight. A close one though, but you get the sense that Rhodes’ striking is crisper and more accurate.

Round 2

Oberto comes in swinging, but Rhodes steps away and hit’s the counter. Rhodes hit’s a couple of sound body kicks after luring Oberto in with the feint. Some missed strikes forces the two to clinch. Oberto quickly pushes his opponent against the ropes. Having shown the judges dominance in grapple, he steps back wanting to strike. For the rest of the round, the two fighters feint and move but no real action takes place.

An unspectacular round which may be slightly edged by Oberto who had the grapple control. Rhodes tried to dummy his opponent into moving in plenty of times, but for the most part failed in his attempts.

Round 3

The third round starts with both strikers firing strikes which don’t connect. Rhodes then counters back with a jab. Rhodes ducks an Oberto combination and hit’s a huge right hand, and The Puma is on the floor! Rhodes unleashes hammer fists and the referee is forced to stop the fight!

The winner via TKO (Strikes) in 2:05 of Round 3 - “The Fight Night Delight” Delroy Rhodes

A very good finish from Delroy Rhodes who found the perfect opportunity to unleash his right hand. Not particularly great until that point, he will want to improve his overall performance next time but for now this win will do him nicely.

Key stat: Rhodes was accurate with his striking, landing 68%

Renato vs. Rodolfo Camara (Heavyweight)

Round 1

Two undefeated prospects looking to prove a point having been left out of the recent title tournament. Renato will no doubt look to quickly get in close and grapple with Camara. Camara opens up the strikes and hit’s a couple of decent shots. A wild takedown attempt by Renato fails. He needs to set it up much better than that. Renato wants to clinch, but he eats a stiff right above the eye for his trouble. Camara tries to get in close but Renato uses the opportunity to score the takedown. A couple of failed pass attempts ended the round.

Renato’s end of round takedown made a Camara round decidedly closer. The judges will certainly find it harder to score that one now, but I feel Camara’s striking did deserve the 10 points.

Round 2

Camara opens up with a couple of big leg kicks that look to affect Renato. Renato wants to grapple but Camara keeps good distance. Camara jumps in the pocket, fearless considering the takedown last round. A good strike from Camara. Renato shoots for the double leg, but Camara counters with a good jab. Camara is really working hard to land his kicks, with one to the ribs and one to the thigh. Renato really is hobbling now. One kick too many though, as Renato catches one and secures another late takedown. Renato is striking from the guard and he’s doing damage! The referee is pulling him away and it’s over.

The winner via TKO (Strikes) in 4:55 of the 2nd Round - Renato

Twice in the fight Camara got in close when he didn’t need too. He was winning the fight both rounds but the 2nd time he was made to pay. A good come from behind win for Renato, though if he’s going to progress he has a lot he needs to work on. Devistating strikes from the guard though.

Key Stat: Camara landed 50% of his standing kicks

Kleber Pereira vs. Toby “The Judoka Who’ll Choke Ya” Sorkin (Middleweight)

Round 1

I don’t think I’ve ever heard so much trash talk in a pre fight interview. Toby Sorkin said that Pereira “is a clown who doesn’t know a hip toss from a suplex. He won’t be able to handle my skill, and I can finish the fight when I want, where I want and how I want.” Let’s see if his predictions turn accurate. Sorkin starts off with some swift counters. He moves in to grapple but Pereira wants no part of Sorkin’s judo. On a second attempt though, Sorkin does initiate the grapple and pushes him against the ropes. He moves his hips to try the judo throw, but Pereira shows great grit to gain control of the grapple. Sorkin quickly regains control and presses Pereira against the ropes for the rest of the round.

Sorkin controlled the round well but showed no signs of being able to finished “when where or how” he wants. He’ll need to bump up his level of performance if he is to ever win over a crowd.

Round 2

Instantly in the 2nd round they clinch. Let’s see if Sorkin can do a bit more this round as he pushes Pereira against the ropes again. He gets a outside leg trip and secures half guard! Much better conviction from Sorkin. He attempts the arm triangle…and he’s got it! It’s tight…but Pereira manages to free himself. How he managed that I don’t know. Sorkin mounts Pereira. He starts raining strikes and it’s over. Another TKO stoppage.

The Winner via TKO (Strikes) in 1:54 of Round 2 - Toby “The Judoka Who’ll Choke Ya” Sorkin

A great 2nd round from Sorkin who nearly wrapped up the submission but didn’t let the failed attempt get to him, and he quickly gained mount to finish the fight with strikes. He might be obnoxious but he certainly has talent.

Key Stat: Sorkin landed 83% of his strikes, making it very hard for Pereira to get anything going.

Jorge Hormazabal vs. Vagner (Middleweight)

Round 1

A good exciting fight in prospect for the fans here. Is there another TKO stoppage in store? Vagner hasn’t been at 100% is the report. A virus may have affected his preparation. It’s power versus speed right now as Vagner’s big shots miss and he is met with some quick flurries. Hormazabal attempts the takedown, but fails. He tries again, setting up with some jabs, but Vagner is equal to it once more. Vagner tries to unload but he hasn’t got his range yet. Hormazabal tries again to get the takedown, but he’s nowhere near getting it. The round ends.

Hormzabal takes the round based purely on the fact he landed some punches. Vagner defended the takedowns well but you can’t give him the round when he did zero damage to his opponent.

Round 2

Hormazabal wastes no time going for the takedown but once again Vagner slips away. Good elusiveness from Vagner. A couple of nice counter jabs from Hormazabal. This round is seeming quite similar to the last so far. Hormazabal shoots for another takedown, but this time Vagner counters it with one of his own. It’s not his favourite place to be, but Vagner is on top in side control. Wanting no part of Hormazabal’s jiu jitsu, Vagner stands right up. Vagner looks tired, and steps in close but meets a vicious right hook. No time to capitalise on the shaken opponent for Hormazabal as the round ends.

Well the most devastating strike of the fight was landed by Hormazabal but with Vagner’s dominance in terms of takedown defence, you can’t help but struggle to score it. Hormazabal probably edged it with the last strike of the round..

Round 3

Both men get some good strikes in too open the round. Hormazabal seems a lot more comfortable to stand and strike after that hook in round 2. Both men content to trade jabs right now, neither causing much damage. Both men are tiring now, and you can see it in the reduced strength their punching has. A weak looking takedown attempt from Hormazabal is stuffed once again. The round ends with both man regaining their breath.

We go to the judges:

Judge 1 scores the fight 29-28 Hormazabal

Judge 2 scores the fight 29-28 Vagner

And Judge 3 scores the fight 29-28

For the winner by Split Decision, Jorge Hormazabal!

Well you can’t argue too much with the judges there. It was a close fight that Hormazabal edged with his striking. Takedown defences aside, Vagner didn’t offer a lot to the fight.

Key Stat: Hormazabal was 0 for 7 in takedown attempts

“Stormin” Norman Pike vs. “The Urban Cowboy” Steve Mason (Heavyweight)

Round 1

It is widely expected the winner of this fight will face the new Heavyweight champion Murilo Santinho so a lot at stake here. Pike opens with some good strikes. He tries to get close to Mason, but some good jabs keeps him back. Both men are missing strikes and changing distances. Pike attempts a takedown but a good sprawl from Mason has him turtled up. Some big shots from Mason, but Pike manages to stand up and back away. Mason ends the round backing up, confident of a round in the bag.

A good performance from Mason, hitting some big shots on the ground. He did enough to secure the round and go one step closer to a title shot, and keeping his undefeated streak in tact.

Round 2

Mason throws a feint but Pike isn’t buying it. Pike comes in with a combo but he is caught flush with a head kick! He’s on the floor. Mason is hitting some bombs from the top, and the referee ends it!

The winner by TKO (Strikes) in 1:40 of Round 2 - “The Urban Cowboy” Steve Mason

A brutal head kick dropped Pike, and now Steve Mason will go on to face Murilo Santinho for the heavyweight title in a battle of the undefeated. A sensational performance from Mason who beats a nationally ranked heavyweight.

Key Stat: Mason landed 67% of his standing kick attempts.

Delma de Brito vs. “The Brazilian Whirlwind” Giovani Silva (Lightweight)

Round 1

Two highly rated lightweights are ready to battle tonight. Both men come in striking but neither connect. De Brito wants to grapple and gets his wish. He instantly pushes him against the ropes. No suprises to see the two fighters engaging in the clinch. Both are Muay Thai fighters. A long time passes with no significant action, and the referee seperates the two fighters. De Brito steps in but has to jump right back out to avoid a surprise uppercut. Silva steps in and is forced to stuff a surprise takedown to end the round.

A very close and boring round. De Brito probably takes it based on aggresiveness and control in the clinch, but really you’d have to say the fans lost that round.

Round 2

De Brito counters with a jab. Both men are missing strikes and now De Brito is looking to hook Silva in a Muay Thai clinch. He’s got it! Silva is in trouble now. Oh! Big elbow to the side of the head. And another! But De Brito seems to be gassing. A huge knee though, as he finds some more strength. How is Silva standing! Another elbow opens up a cut above Silva’s eye. Somehow he escapes the clinch. Silva now shows some offense with a good roundhouse kick to the ribs. The referee finds a break in the action and asks the doctor to check on Silva’s cut. He will be ok to carry on! Nothing else happens in the remaining time though and Silva’s corner men can get to work on closing the cut.

A dominant round from De Brito as this fight has gone into gear. The worrying thing was De Brito gassing towards the end. Maybe he has lost his chance to get the finish now but with that cut, there is always the possibility of it being reopened and stopping the fight.

Round 3

The punches are wild from both men, neither connecting. De Brito is taking a risk leaving his hands so low, but Silva seems just as tired now. Silva presses forward with the jab. De Brito then avoids some sluggish punches, and hit’s a crisp left hand in return. De Brito grapples and pushes Silva against the ropes. He holds him there for the rest of the round and the fight is over.

The judges scorecards are in:

All 3 judges score the fight 30-27

For the winner by Unanimous Decision - Delma de Brito

A very good 2nd round saved this from being a horrible fight. It was always going to be close, but de Brito did enough in all 3 rounds to edge it out.

Key Stat: de Brito was clinical from the clinch, landing 100% of knees and elbows

Braulio “Louco” Moura vs. Joaquin “Assassino Silencioso” Fontes (Middleweight Title)

Round 1

The champion’s camp was filled with rumours that he didn’t perform to their expectations. He has the talent but if unprepared Fontes will make him pay. Fontes fakes the takedown and nearly lands a good kick to the ribs as Moura falls for it. Fontes this time does shoot in but Moura blocks it. Both men are just feeling each other out right now. They exchange jabs. Both men are looking to connect but neither is doing so. Fontes drops looking for the double leg, and he has it! But not much time left to do anything with it. He does slip into mount but can’t get anything done before the bell rings.

Moura can not let Fontes take this fight to the ground. He can defend a submission, but Fontes is another level of submission artist. A good round for Fontes who will look to do much of the same in the next.

Round 2

They both strike and miss but fall into a grapple. Fontes quickly looks to work the takedown and he has it. Straight into half guard for Fontes. Moura in big trouble early on. He uses strikes to set up the pass, and easily gains mount. Not even looking for a submission, Fontes rains down blows and it’s all over!

The winner via TKO (Strikes) in 2:20 of Round 2 and new Middleweight champion - Joaquin “Assassino Silencioso” Fontes

Moura did not look like the fighter we know he is. This is a big loss for him but im sure he will bounce back. For Fontes though, the reign has begun and with a performance like this, it will send a message to the rest of the division. The silent assassin is in control

Key Stat: Fontes landed 73% of standing strikes.

And that concludes our coverage of the show. Congratulations to Renato and Rodolfo Camara for earning fight of the night.

Attendance: 213 for $5,325

Critical Rating: Good

Commercial Rating: Great

Fun show, can't believe I forgot to predict - I nearly did it before work but didn't have the game on that PC so I decided to wait until I could open it up and see who was who, then forgot about it. Dumb! Still, looking forward to seeing the Cyborg. :)

FLB 9: Villar vs. Elgar Full Card:

Affonso Villar [22-2] vs. Elgar [25-7] (Light Heavyweight Title)

Villar seems like he's borderline unbeatable in this game. Elgar is good, but Villar will run through him.

Leandro Piquet [19-7] vs. Roberto Aldez [42-11] (LHW)

Aldez has always been a frustrating fighter for me, but Piquet shot not cause him troubles and I suspect will be finished by strikers.

Leonardo da Costa [12-6] vs. Vivinho [6-1] (MW)

Vivinho too good a striker and will finish da Costa.

Gustavo Bautista [62-23-9] vs. Tarcisio Dantas [3-0] (LW)

Bautista is on his last legs while Dantas is a good up and coming fighter. I think he'll take this by decision or get a gnp win.

Ragner Gunnlaugsson [1-0] vs. Anderson Desailly [4-0] (LW)

My boy, and really good too.

Wilson Franklyn [5-1] vs. Tiago da Paixao [9-5] (HW)

Seems like a fight made for Franklyn to win. I never have much faith in him, but I'm picking the win here.

Magno Perres Arruda [8-2] vs. Rubenilson Augusto [7-1] (LHW)

Both good fighters, but Magno looks the goods.

Arthur Franco [11-4] vs. Denilson da Cunha [10-4] (LHW)

Neither fighter a world beater, but Franco by decision if he can take it down.

Fight League Brazil 8: Villar vs. Elgar - Live Coverage

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/4602/flb9.jpg

Welcome to Blurcats live coverage of FLB 8: Villar vs. Elgar. A card full of prospects, pound for pound stars and the odd grizzled veteran is sure to excite this Brazilian crowd tonight. FLB’s reputation has grown of late, with the latest Blurcat rankings having them at 5th, one up from their last position so a lot to live up too for Simon Lambden’s company tonight.

But the star of the show can certainly help do that. Villar is one of the most highly rated Light Heavyweights in the world. His opponent Elgar is no slouch though. Former Light Heavyweight Champion himself, Elgar will look to return to the top of the pile.

Arthur Franco vs. Denilson da Cunha (Light Heavyweight)

Round 1

Da Cunha has done a lot of talking in the build up to the match, maybe looking for an edge over hot favourite Franco. Both men come in and miss they’re opening strikes. Franco wants to grapple with da Cunha and does so. Quickly he tries to take him down, but can not. Instead Franco pushes him against the ropes after stopping da Cunha’s attempt to break free. A few short strikes allows Franco to get underhooks and he proceeds to take him down. He slips directly to mount from half guard! He tries to rain down the big shots but da Cunha is able to defend himself and see out the round.

The last thing da Cunha wanted was to be taken to the ground. Credit to him though, he defended a tough position well knowing how much time was left in the round. A solid round for Franco which will force da Cunha to come in more aggressively.

Round 2

Franco counters a jab with one of his own. Da Cunha responds with his own counter jab. Both men are missing, and it’s Da Cunha who gets the next counter strike. Franco really knows how to move his head and avoid da Cunha’s fists. Franco shoots, and ducks under the counter punch of da Cunha, scoring the takedown. He easily moves to side control and hit’s a knee into the ribs of Da Cunha. Franco moves to mount but there isn’t long left. In fact there is no time left, the round is over.

Until that takedown da Cunha was probably edging it. The way fights are judged though, you’d have to say it’s a toss up as to who could be given that round. Franco’s ease at which he moved past the defence of da Cunha on the ground may have just won the round.

Round 3

Da Cunha opens up strong, countering a left with some huge rights and Franco is down!! He quickly regains his composure though and waits for da Cunha to make his move. He motions Franco to stand up. Da Cunha is on fire this round, some more huge rights and Franco is in trouble. He backs up and looks like he is struggling to stand. Da Cunha attempts to finish it off with a head kick, but it’s off target and the opportunity seems to have passed. Da Cunha comes in close but is met with some soft strikes from Franco. Franco hit’s a huge right, and he’s knocked da Cunha out cold!!!

The winner via KO (Punch) in 3:16 of Round 3 - Arthur Franco!

Absolutely crazy third round! I don’t know I’ve seen anything like it. Da Cunha, who had been on the back foot for the first two rounds, comes out firing big shots, knocking down his opponent. He lets him back up and is on the verge of finishing…only to end up being knocked out clean. An amazing end to the fight and one of the rounds of the year.

Key Stat: Both men scored 50% of their strikes

Magno Perres Arruda vs. Rubenilson Augusto (Light Heavyweight)

Round 1

Having beaten the man who we just saw in action, Augusto really showed signs of what FLB management hope he can be. But Arruda will be no easy task and many see this as too big of a step for Augusto. Arruda hit’s a nice body kick to open up. He then kicks the inside of Augusto’s leg. He tries for another but Augusto counters. Augusto comes in close. He hit’s a big right to the body. Arruda winced at that. Augusto is timing the low kicks well now and counters with a left. Both men throw some counters and then Arruda backs off. Arruda hit’s a left which glances off the cheek of Augusto.

A tight round to score with both men scoring good strikes, and counters. If pushed I’d probably say Arruda but the judges could be forgiven for awarding Augusto the round.

Round 2

Augusto opens up with a huge swing, but Arruda is too quick and hit’s a swift leg kick. And another! He’s working those kicks today. Augusto moves in, hoping to minimise the power of those leg kicks. He seems much more comfortable in the pocket, and slips past some strikes and counters with a combination to the body. Arruda fights back with a couple of shots of his own and then it’s another counter leg kick to the thigh. And another! He finishes the round on top with a stiff jab.

Augusto is going to suffer if he allows Arruda to keep hitting these leg kicks. A clearer round to score as Arruda really controlled it despite taking some shots in the middle of the round. Neither man will feel like they’re winning the fight though.

Round 3

Same old same old. Arruda hits two leg kicks to the left knee. Augusto seems to not be too effected so far though and hit’s a couple of quick combos. Once again Augusto comes in close, but his jab is countered with a good right. He is finding it easy to avoid the now lethargic Augusto and is hitting every time with the counter. Under a minute to go, and both men know it! They are swinging for the fences! Arruda with the uppercut and he knocks Augusto out!!

The winner by KO (Punch) in 4:30 of Round 3 - Magno Peres Arruda!

Another 3rd round knockout. With the way the round had gone Arruda didn’t need to lay it all out then, but he clearly felt the way to defend a desperate Augusto was to fire back and he was quickest to the punch and he defeats Augusto. Another fantastic fight.

Key Stat: Arruda was deadly with his legs and hit 67% of his kicks.

“Silent but Violent” Wilson Franklyn vs. Tiago da Paixao (Heavyweight)

Round 1

Ladies and Gentleman I hope your prepared for what should be an all out war. Two brawlers who love to swing about to go at it here. Instantly Franklyn ducks a jab and hit’s a huge combo of rights knocking da Paixao down! He shakes it off though and waits for Franklyn to make a move. He moves in and gains side control. A big knee to the ribs sets up a move to mount, but that is blocked by da Paixao. Franklyn fires some elbows off but they aren’t hit cleanly. He tries to take the back of his opponent but can not, and then blocks da Paixao’s attempt to pull guard. Both men are at a stalemate and the ref stands them up. They both miss their strikes and clinch. Franklyn quickly pushes da Paixao against the ropes and the round ends.

Definitely Franklyn’s round. He got da Paixao down with some of the heaviest strikes I’ve seen. Somehow he survived it and surprisingly Franklyn dived in and took side control. On the ground nothing much happened and it detracted from a great opening minute.

Round 2

Both fighters are at a stalemate, neither landing convincing strikes. There was always a worry Franklyn would tire and that looks the case. He hangs back waiting for da Paixao to make a move and the crowd show their displeasure. Da Paixao side steps a Franklyn right and hits one of his own. Franklyn is too tired, and now in the pocket is still missing and getting countered. Round 2 is over.

A poor round from both men but especially Franklyn. He didn’t have the energy to make it back to his stool. I don’t know how he will be able to generate any offence in the 3rd so this is da Paixao’s fight to win now.

Round 3

Da Paixao opens with a good punch, and then they end up clinching after both missing. Franklyn pushes da Paixao against the ropes maybe hoping to grind out a decision win. Maybe not, he steps back wanting to strike. Da Paixao hit’s a couple of good straight lefts. Franklyn can’t land a thing right now and is just getting left jabs on a constant basis. Finally something, with a good right to the body but time is running out. Franklyn ends the fight with a couple of decent body shots but nothing great. The judges will decide this.

Judge 1 scores it 29-28 da Paixao

Judge 2 scores it 29-28 Franklyn

And Judge 3 scores it 29-28

For the winner via Split Decision - Tiago da Paixao!

The fight never lived up to the first 30 seconds and much of that was down to Franklyn being a lot more silent than he was violent. Neither man looked capable of finishing the fight from then on and in the end da Paixao’s slightly better cardio won him the fight.

Key Stat: Franklyn was actually more effective in striking, landing 32% of his strikes.

Ragnar “Rock” Gunnlaugsson vs. Anderson “Flash” Desailly (Lightweight)

Round 1

In what sounds a like a battle of superheroes, Rock takes on Flash in this battle of lightweight undefeated. Both men come into the center of the ring and start swinging! Desailly tries to back up but gets hit with a good shot and is down! Gunnlaugsson quickly moves in and mounts Desailly. Some big strikes but Desailly is defending well. He has been cut above his eye. Gunnlaugsson is trying to finish but Desailly is deflecting most of the shots coming down. Desailly tries to get out but ends up giving up his back! Gunlaugsson is still trying but can not hit clean strikes and the time expires on the round.

A very good round with another great first 30 seconds. Desailly showed great composure to withstand the barrage from Gunnlaugsson in mount and when he had given up his back. He lost the round but could of easily lost the fight so a good job done by him. Now the cut man needs to stop the bleeding above his eye.

Round 2

Both fighters are firing but neither connecting right now. Desailly is certainly flash, trying to dupe Gunnlaugsson with some feints. Desailly pulls Gunnlaugsson into the Muay Thai clinch! Big knee to the face!! He’s out!

The winner via KO (Knee) in 2:30 of Round 2 - Anderson “Flash” Desailly

A wonderful comeback win for Flash. He hooked the Muay Thai clinch and Gunnlaugsson had no defence for the huge knee everyone saw coming. A good job to stay undefeated by Desailly and an entertaining match making up for the last fight on the card.

Key Stat: Gunnlaugsson landed 54 out of 68 ground strikes (79%) but was unable to hit any that threatened to stop the fight.

Gustavo “Argentinean Samurai” Bautista vs. Tarcisio Dantas (Lightweight)

Round 1

Very interesting to see that Dantas weighed in at 155, but is coming in at a reported 172lbs. A huge size advantage for the youngster against his vastly experienced opponent. Dantas shows good speed hitting a couple of counter rights. He throws some dummy jabs and shoots in for the takedown and gets it! Bautista pulls half guard. Dantas goes right for the arm triangle but it is blocked. Dantas passes to mounth with ease. Dantas attempts the armbar, but it stacked by Bautista and the 90+ fight veteran secures side control. He catches his breath, allowing Dantas to get him into half guard. He throws a couple of strikes and blocks the sweep attempt. Bautista then tries to pass but is blocked and the round is over.

A good ground battle and it was interesting to see Dantas go for the sub and not try to ground and pound his way to the win. On the ground though Dantas was easily in control and only a failed armbar allowed Bautista to get on top. The round should go Dantas’ way.

Round 2

Dantas hit’s a good left jab combo. He is controlling the standup, making Bautista miss and hitting the counter every time. He hits some short punches and then scores another takedown. He ends up in guard. He passes easily once again and obtains side control. Now he goes to the ground and pound and the referee is looking closely…He stops it!!!

The winner via TKO (Strikes) in 4:58 of Round 2 - Tarcisio Dantas!

Talk about ending the round strong! I queried why he tried to submit Bautista in the first round and that is why. His bread and butter is ground and pound and he showed it. A good win for the youngster over a vastly experienced competitor.

Key Stat: Dantas hit 83% of his standing strikes

Leonardo da Costa vs. Vivinho (Middleweight)

Round 1

Jiu Jitsu artist da Costa will look to take his opponent down quickly I’m sure as Vivinho’s kickboxing is nothing to mess with. Da Costa moves in but nearly regrets it as he narrowly misses a knockout punch. Vivinho counters well with a couple of jabs. Da Costa tries to score a takedown but fails. Vivinho steps in close, but da Costa uses the opportunity to score a big takedown. Now he’s at home. Da Costa looks for a leg lock late in the round…but it’s blocked. Not deterred, da Costa tries again! He gets a toe hold secured…but the round is over.

Vivinho can count himself lucky there was just 12 seconds left of the round because da Costa had the toe hold locked in. Vivinho will be very wary of the takedown next round after that close escape.

Round 2

Vivinho hit’s a cautious left jab. He then counters a missed left with a solid leg kick. Vivinho didn’t learn from last time, stepping in close and getting taken down. A lot more time in this round for Vivinho to survive. Da Costa plans his next move for a while, and then passes to side control. Now he has the back! Big trouble here. He gets the rear naked choke locked in but once again it’s late in the round…not too late though and Vivinho taps!!

The winner via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) in 4:28 of Round 2 - Leonardo da Costa!

The Jiu Jitsu of da Costa was superb. He was unlucky not to finish it in the first round, but he stuck to the gameplan and made Vivinho pay for a stupid decision to move in close again. Good win for da Costa.

Key Stat: Da Costa scored 67% of his takedowns.

Leandro Piquet vs. Roberto “The Sniper” Aldez (Light Heavyweight)

Round 1

Two Muay Thai experts do battle for a potential shot at the winner of tonight’s main event for the title. Aldez is the first to land, hitting two good left jabs and following with a strong body shot. Piquet circles but is backed into the corner by Aldez. Aldez hit’s a kick to the ribs. Both men are missing and Aldez once again traps Piquet in the corner. Piquet avoids the rights that come his way and hit’s a left jab. Aldez comes in close and hits some good jabs. The round is over.

A good but unspectacular round. Aldez controlled it, using the jab effectively, and moving Piquet into the positions he wanted. Now he just needs to find a way to step up a gear and get the finish. A good start from The Sniper.

Round 2

Aldez misses the leg kick and Piquet shows off with a big spinning backfist! He tries to clinch but Aldez doesn’t let him. Aldez comes in close and Piquet hits him with the left. Aldez misses again with the leg kick and is knocked to the ground by Piquet’s push kick! He is quickly in position to wait for Piquet’s next move. Aldez takes a kick to the legs. He tries to secure side control, but has to settle for half guard. Piquet hits some good but weak strikes and attempts to pass but Aldez blocks it. The round ends.

One round each. Piquet showed some flash moves with the backfist and push kick and controlled it well. It’ll be interesting too see how aggressive these two are in looking to win the fight in the third.

Round 3

Both men feint, and Aldez once again misses the leg kick and eats a left for his troubles. Piquet tries to clinch but has to give up his attempts to avoid a right uppercut. Aldez lands a strong right hook to the body. Aldez is going for the finish here, but misses his combo of big rights. Piquet again wants to clinch but can’t get close enough. Piquet hits some good shots to end the round. The judges will give their scores.

All three judges score the fight 29-28

For the winner by Unanimous Decision - Leandro Piquet

A tight victory but probably just about right. Not a performance that wowed the fans, it will be interesting to see if FLB President Simon Lambden, still gives Piquet the shot at the title. Aldez didn’t look terrible but he just wasn’t quite sharp enough to get the win here.

Key Stat: Both men scored under 30% in their striking

Affonso “Cyborg” Villar vs. Elgar (Light Heavyweight Title)

Round 1

Here we go, the Light Heavyweight title fight is under way! Villar looks in good shape today. Elgar falls for the feint but avoids the follow up strikes. Villar hit’s a solid jab. Both men miss and fall into the clinch…a comfortable place for both men. Elgar tries to strike but Villar takes control. Villar now switches to the Muay Thai clinch…Elgar needs to escape fast! Too late!!! A huge knee connects and he is out.

The winner via KO (Knee) in 2:39 of Round 1 and still Light Heavyweight Champion - Affonso “Cyborg” Villar

A dominant performance from the champion here tonight. He rips Elgar apart with relative ease and sends a message to the rest of the division, including Leonardo Piquet. Cyborg demonstrated top quality Muay Thai and thoroughly deserves to be in the pound for pound discussion.

Key Stat: Cyborg only landed 5 out of 21 punches thrown.

That concludes the coverage of FLB 9: Villar vs. Elgar and we hope you enjoyed tonight’s action.

Predictions

Jaded - 4/8

Scottie - 4/8

BYU 14 - 4/8

So an all out draw here but BYU and Scottie will both be awaded an extra half point in the standings due to the original write up having them two tied as winners of the predictions.

Overall Leaderboard

BYU 14 - 3.5

Scottie - 1.5

Jaded - 1

OOC: The original card had some slightly different results so I felt it only fair to award half points to BYU 14 and Scottie who were tied for 6/8 while Jaded had 5.
