Review of the first decade of MMA

Biggest news:

- The whole business started after World Martial Arts League held their first event in January 1985. The event held an tournament which the legendary Ricardo Costa won.

- After WMAL 6 the president of WMAL died when a group of thugs beat him dead. WMAL 6 is still thought to be one of the best events ever held.

- Through out the decade new organisations have been opened to every continent except Australia.

- WMAL is still the only organisation to get a PPV deal. They're record sales to one show were from WMAL 68: Kick Start which had Dexter Darling and Fernando Amaro at the main event. The PPV Buy Rate was 390,205 which netted them $2,341,230.

Retired Fighters (Notable fighters only):

- Kirk Bloss (3-1) (One of the early stars of the sport.)

- Kenneth Boomer (5-0) WMAL 3 tournament winner and the early American face of MMA.)

- Oscar Hermansson (6-1) (The winner of WMAL 4 where he finished all his opponents.)

- Shuuto Katagiri (9-3) (Still the most loved fighter out of Japan. Won the WMAL 5 tournament)

- Atshushi Nakajima (7-4) (Former EMERALD Middleweight champ)

Fighters who have affected the business the most:

Anthony Sims

What can you say... 15-0 to the date and he began fighting all the way in 1986. One of the poster boys of the WMAL even though he has left them multiple times.

Two times WMAL Openweight champion and one of the three two times fighter of the year. He has finished all his fights and only once has he gone to the third round.

Ricardo Costa

Two times WMAL Openweight champion and the winner of the WMAL 1 tournament. He has accomplished a lot more than his brother and currently holds a record of 18-5.

His feud with Rickson Gracie is one of the most followed ones in the whole business. It's been talked that he would be the #1 fighter of all time if his submission defence would be a lot better.

Rickson Gracie

Rickson is easily one of the most regocnisable fighters of all time. Winner of the WMAL 2 tournament and the first WMAL Openweight champion.

After losing the championship he has been struggling to succeed. Still one of the top draws in the business.

Matthew Dean

In just 6 years he has gathered 20 fights to his record. He has 17 wins and only three losses. What makes him loved is his ability to finish matches quickly. He has only twice gone past the first round.

He doesn't hold any belts and only once has he been offered to fight for one. He lost that fight but is still widely loved.

Ondrej Mazur

Possibly the best European to ever fight. Atleast to this point. He's held three titles and has never fought outside of WMAL.

He has never gone to the decision and is known as one of the best BJJ artists in the world.

Roberto Alexander

"Big Dog" is the true poster boy of American MMA. Former WMAL Heavyweight and Openweight champion.

One of the people who can be really proud as most of his losses are against the best in the world.

Timothy Reed

The most dominant WMAL Heavyweight champion of all time. Currently he has six defences and is ready to defend his title once again.

He has gone to the decision only once in his career and that was in his first fight which he lost. Many people talk that he has only "one real loss" as his one loss was due to a lucky upkick KO and the fanboys come up with another excuse why the Decision loss shouldn't count.
