NWA 1989: What? This Again?

Recommended Posts

OOC Backstory:

Much like with the United States Pro Wrestling in the Cornellverse, the NWA 1989 diary has been a staple of mine. Much like Eisen-Verse was with the SWF diary, this is one diary that I wished to truly do and do right before I eventually leave the diary writing world. That means that the world of kayfabe is alive and well within this diary. There are certain things that I will be trying out for the diary that some may find interesting and some may not work. I will have to wait and see.

Why not return to one of your other NWA diaries?

I thought long and hard about this one. I read back over what I had written both on the boards and in the notepads that I use for my diaries. In the end, I decided to start fresh because it was difficult for me to get back into the storylines and everything that I had written before. So officially every diary is dead except for this one and my USPW: What? This Again? diary.

You start too many diaries, etc.

I realize that point. I know that I have been a start and stop type with my diaries. This is my 7th diary since the debut of TEW 2010. But 7 is a lucky number, right? I hope that my past will not limit the amount of input that I get with this diary though I do understand if it does. I have done over 6 months now with my USPW: What? This Again? diary and I hope to do the same and longer with this one.

Show Writeups

I have decided to use a more abbreviated version for the regular show writeups. No long written-out promos or matches or anything. Just the gist of what's going on and then moving on. I may do full writeups for the pay-per-views. I haven't decided yet. The B-Show, NWA Worldwide, will get the usual writeup that I have given it in my other NWA diaries. Meaning just what you would see through the game itself..nothing more, nothing less.

Prediction Contest

As always with my diaries, there will be prediction contests. The first one will last from September to the end of the year and then every 4 months thereafter.

Thanks

I would like to thank the maker of the 1989 mod for making such a wonderful mod that brings me back to my childhood.

I would also like to thank Adam Ryland for making such a fun and addicting game as TEW 2010.

I am also going to go ahead and throw out a thank you to jhd1 as I know he will be making some banners and posters and the like because, well, I enjoy using his creative genius.

USPW: What? This Again?

For those of you wondering and worried, this will have little to no effect on my USPW diary. That one is still going strong.

The Great Muta vs. Jason Knight

No Brainer. Muta FTW.

Buzz Sawyer vs. Ole Anderson

Could go either way but if you go down the Horseman route rather than J-Tex then Ole needs the win more

Varsity Club vs. Midnight Express

Again, it could go either way but the Midnights were and forever are golden!

*NOTE: NWA Worldwide predictions WILL count toward the prediction contest. However, it will not be given a full writeup as it is a B-Show.

Still a good ole hand, I can see membership of the J-Tex coming his way but not the title

Always look forward to your diary's, I hope this one stays for a while as like this era.

It's always good to have you as a reader and predicter, nick. This era is definitely a lot of fun though I hope I can pull out some surprises as well.

I'm in!

Now back to that Warrior promo I'm trying to write... he's murder!

I love writing for the Ultimate Warrior/Jim Force. You can just type in anything and it will make sense. Just string random words together. lol.

So I'll probably get lots of these predictions wrong early, since I was 1 at this time and am totally not familiar with some of these guys, especially some of the B-Show guys.

I was only 8 at this time myself. But I think it's a great era in wrestling and I think that your predictions will only get better with time. ;)

I hope that Buzz gets some lovin' in this diary.

I've given Buzz some love before back in D.O.T.T. style diaries, if I remember correctly. That being said, he is a member of the top heel stable in this diary right now.

Great to see you scratching this itch, Angel. I have no doubt in my mind that you'll do a great job. :D I'll be honest, I don't know the era all that well but will do my best to predict when possible.

Cheers.

Great to see you here and predicting, E-V. Time and predictions can only make those predictions better, right? :D

Here we go again, eh? lol.

It's like back to the future all over again!

Thanks for the predictions everyone! They truly are read and appreciated.

On that note, I am thinking it is possible that the very first show could be out tomorrow. I am not completely positive on it but it's a very distinct possibility. So if anyone still wants to predict, there's your warning. :D

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/boborton.jpg

[The show began with the music from 2001: A Space Odyssey and the crowd rising on their feet for the entrance of the man himself. The NWA World Heavyweight Champion 'The Nature Boy' Ric Flair came down to the ring and stepped inside. After speaking to the crowd for a moment, he turned his comments toward Terry Funk and 'Cowboy' Bob Orton, Jr. He talked about how neither one of them could walk that aisle and step to the plate against the Nature Boy. After all, he is a limousine riding, jet flying, kiss stealing, wheeling and dealing son of a gun! Whooooo! As Ric went on, he was interrupted by his opponent for this evening: 'Cowboy' Bob Orton, Jr.]

[bob Orton looked toward Flair from the rope and said he was going to hogtie him tonight and finish what he should have finished back in 1983 when he went after Harley Race's bounty. A brawl ensued inside the ring that had to be broken up by security. What a way to open the show tonight!]

Match #1

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/alperez.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/brianpillman.jpg

Al Perez vs. Flyin' Brian

[A matchup that had some good action but the crowd really wasn't into this opening bout here on World Championship Wrestling. The big selling point was the announcers talking about the main event later on this evening. The Latin Heartthrob nearly scored a pinfall on Flyin' Brian midway through the match. Brian came back, though, and hit Perez with an Air Pillman and then made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Flyin' Brian (Via Pinfall @ 9:16)

Match Rating: D+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/SteveWilliams2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/JunkYardDog.jpg

[steve Williams and the Junkyard Dog come out to ringside to speak with announcer Gordon Solie. They announce their alliance to battle the Varsity Club and that will begin at NWA's Fall Brawl in a tag team encounter as Steve 'Dr. Death' Williams and the JYD team up to face Varsity Club members Mike Rotundo and Kevin Sullivan!]

[Ricky Steamboat comes out for an interview to talk about his ongoing feud with Lex Luger. But before Steamboat can utter a word, he is attacked from behind by the United States Champion! Luger sends Steamboat crashing down to the ground with a shot from the belt! He picks up The Dragon and locks him in the Human Torture Rack! Officials come running out from the back to break things up.]

The Samoan Swat Team vs. Road Warriors

[Definitely the most hard-hitting matchup on the card tonight as two powerful tag teams go at it inside the ring. The SST picked up a two count after Paul E. Dangerously smashed his cell phone over Animal's head. Somehow Animal still kicked out! The match still rumbled forward until Animal caught Samu in a powerslam and then knocked Fatu off the ring apron. He tagged out to his partner and lifted Samu on his shoulders -- DOOMSDAY DEVICE! Samu went flipping upside down and landed hard on the mat. Hawk made the cover, sticking out his tongue: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: Road Warriors (Via Pinfall @ 12:34)

Match Rating: C+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/jimmygarvin-1.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/MichaelHayes7-1.jpg

[Following the sound of the bell, the NWA World Tag Team Champions The Fabulous Freebirds hit the ring! They went right after the Road Warriors with shots from their belts! Paul Ellering was not immune to the attack either as he suffered from a DDT by Michael Hayes! The Freebirds stood tall as 'Badstreet U.S.A.' began to play to boos from the crowd. These two teams will be meeting for the NWA World Tag Team Titles at Fall Brawl!]

[Woman gave a pre-recorded interview where she talked about her breakup with Rick Steiner. She said it's the best thing to ever happen to her and the worst thing to ever happen to the Steiner Brothers. She tells everyone that she is promising DOOM for the Steiner Brothers at Fall Brawl! What does this mean? Tune in to the show and find out!]

Match #3

The Great Muta vs. Steve Williams

[Our semi main event was one that really got the crowd excited as it featured some great back and forth action. It was the martial arts and speed of The Great Muta as he utilized some quick kicks and chops to Steve Williams against the wrestling skill and power of Steve Williams. Dr. Death caught Great Muta in midair and dropped him hard over his knee with a backbreaker! Williams caught Muta with a powerslam: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! The crowd booed as two men walked down to the ring.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/mikerotundo-1.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/kevinsullivan.jpg

[it's the Varsity Club! Mike Rotundo and Kevin Sullivan stood down at ringside, providing quite the distraction for Steve Williams. Muta took advantage of this and caught Williams with a Moonsault Press: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: The Great Muta (Via Pinfall @ 12:49)

Match Rating: B

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/boborton.jpg

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match

Ric Flair defends vs. 'Cowboy' Bob Orton

[Ric Flair was ever the consummate showman and it showed in the beginning of this bout as he did a few struts and basically kept Orton off his game, using the cheers from the crowd and the ropes to keep Orton at bay. The NWA World Heavyweight Champion managed to maintain the advantage in the early going and he focused right in on the knee of Orton. Flair usually picks one body part and sticks to it as he is doing right here tonight. Flair bounced off the ropes -- Knee Drop! He makes the cover: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout!]

[Orton begins making his comeback around the 12 minute mark much to the chagrin of the crowd. He is favoring that right leg, though as he takes down Flair with a suplex. He moves Flair to the corner and whips him across, wincing and grabbing his knee as Flair flips over the turnbuckles to land on the apron. Flair runs across to the turnbuckle and climbs up but he is met by Orton and a body slam awaits the Nature Boy! Orton makes a cover: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! Orton begins choking Flair on the mat but breaks before the count of five. He gets to his feet and moves over to the turnbuckles. He tries to lift Flair up but his knee buckles and he nearly falls to the mat!]

[Flair turns Orton into the corner and lights up his chest with chops! Five in a row by the Nature Boy! Orton falls to the mat and Flair grabs the legs: Figure 4 Leglock! Ric Flair locks in the Figure 4! Orton has nowhere to go as his body lays in the center of the ring! Orton reaches, stretching, trying to get to the ropes. But he can't do it! He can't reach the ropes...and Orton gives up!]

Winner: Ric Flair (Via Submission @ 20:01)

Match Rating: A

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpg

['Cowboy' Bob Orton, Jr. saved his knee from becoming shattered but he also provided a distraction for Flair as Terry Funk came down to the ring holding a branding iron! Funk slipped behind Flair and began choking the Nature Boy with the branding iron! The crowd booed as Flair started to fade out. Funk smiled a devious smile as Flair dropped down to his knees. But then the crowd burst out in cheers.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/rickysteamboat2.jpg

[Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat hit the ring with chair in hand! Funk released Flair and rolled out of the ring quickly! Steamboat checked on his friend Ric Flair and then stared down Terry Funk! Both men are challengers for the top two belts in the NWA! We'll see you next week!]

NWA WORLDWIDE*

Saturday Week 2 September 1989

The Great Muta vs. Flyin' Brian

Little surprised that this one isn´t in main show but I think that Muta will take this one.

Scott Hall vs. Z-Man

Hall isn´t a big name yet

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Junkyard Dog

Usually I would vote Bam Bam to win this one but JYD is the one who has feud/storyline going right now.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 2 September 1989

Non Title: Cactus Jack vs. Sting

Sting is bigger name

The Samoan Swat Team vs. The Steiners

Samoans are pretty much jobber team

The Skyscrapers vs. Flyin' Brian and Z-Man

Bigger guys take the win

Rip Morgan vs. Steve Williams

Morgan didn´t do anything in your previous diaries so I don´t expect much from him on this one either.

Terry Funk vs. Ricky Steamboat

Funk is going to challenge Flair so he needs to get past Ricky.
