NWA 1989: What? This Again?

Recommended Posts

NWA WORLDWIDE*

Saturday Week 2 September 1989

The Great Muta vs. Flyin' Brian

Give it a few months of the right build and this could run on a PPV easy - should be a good match

Scott Hall vs. Z-Man

Toss up. Hall is probably a jobber in all but name and Z-Man... well my non-love for Z-Man is well known...

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Junkyard Dog

JYD is getting the push - but I expect Bam Bam to put up one hell of a fight!

Non Title: Cactus Jack vs. Sting

Sting. Cactus is still too lowly to challenge Sting just now but would make a good TV match.

The Samoan Swat Team vs. The Steiners

I expect Doom-terference but not enough for the SWAT to steal

The Skyscrapers vs. Flyin' Brian and Z-Man

Not sure who the Skyscrapers could feud with at the minute - The Midnights? They're headed for a Starrcade date with the Warriors though I reckon...

Rip Morgan vs. Steve Williams

Squash-tastic

Terry Funk vs. Ricky Steamboat

I call an A! Potential MOTY candidate right here but for that dirty finish - I predict Luger interference rather than J-Tex though.

No love for the MX? Sad.

What I probably should have put within that NWA Worldwide report is that the Midnight Express were attacked during and after the match by the Skyscrapers, who they will be facing at Fall Brawl.

Saturday Week 2 September 1989

The Great Muta vs. Flyin' Brian

Little surprised that this one isn´t in main show but I think that Muta will take this one.

Rip Morgan vs. Steve Williams

Morgan didn´t do anything in your previous diaries so I don´t expect much from him on this one either.

The Muta/Flyin' Brian match did disappoint me a little bit as you will see when the show comes out tomorrow. But two high flyers that will definitely see better days within the future.

Rip Morgan is someone I need to do a lot more research on. Right now, he seems to be in the range of a Ranger Ross, Al Perez, etc.

It doesn't seem like there is a lot of love for "Zed-Man" from anyone. lol. Though I did enjoy his work at times. But he seems to have an attitude backstage from what I've read.

Not giving anything away but the Funk/Steamboat match was another disappointment to me. But Funk has bad chemistry with Gary Hart as his manager and he has bad chemistry facing Ricky Steamboat so I couldn't ask for too much more than what I got.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/rickysteamboat2.jpg

[As the fans were filing into the sold-out arena, Terry Funk and Gary Hart came out to the ring, absorbing in some boos from the crowd. Funk yelled at the audience and then turned his attention to Ricky Steamboat. He spoke about how Steamboat stuck his nose where it doesn't belong last week and this week that means he's going to get the end cut off by Terry Funk! As Funk continued, Ricky Steamboat interrupted him. Steamboat came out and a brawl ensued between the two that had to be broken up by officials.]

Match #1

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/cactusjack3.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting4.jpg

Non Title

Cactus Jack vs. Sting

[Our opening match was a pretty good one here on World Championship Wrestling! Cactus Jack showed the violent nature that he is known for, while Sting showed an aggressive side that surprised many of the fans. Sting sent Cactus into the ring post outside the ring and then slammed him up against the guardrail. Back inside the ring, he sent Cactus to a corner -- Stinger Splash! Cactus fell to the mat and Sting grabbed the legs -- Scorpion Deathlock! Within moments, Cactus had no choice but to give up!]

Winner: Sting (Via Submission @ 9:59)

Match Rating: B-

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/greatmuta.jpg

[As Sting got his arm raised, someone came sneaking down to the ring. Sting turned -- ASIAN MIST! The Great Muta misted Sting right in the eyes! Sting began rubbing at his face and then swinging punches wildly! Muta took him down with a sharp karate kick and then stood over the NWA World Television Champion.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/mikerotundo-1.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/kevinsullivan.jpg

[A pre-taped interview played showing the Varsity Club, a hated team here in the NWA. Mike Rotundo talked about how Oklahoma is one of the worst schools in the world. They are going to prove that at Fall Brawl when the Varsity Club defeats Steve Williams and Junkyard Dog.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpg

[The crowd within the arena cheered when 2001: A Space Odyssey began to play. 'The Nature Boy' Ric Flair walked out wearing a blue robe with the NWA World title around his waist. He stepped inside the ring and began talking about his match with Terry Funk at Fall Brawl. Terry has got to learn that when he walks that aisle against 'The Nature Boy' that he is facing the best NWA World Champion ever. He is facing a limousine riding, jet flying, kiss stealing, wheeling, dealing son of a gun! Terry Funk, you are facing the man. At Fall Brawl, Ric Flair proves it. Whooooooo!]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #2

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/samu5.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/fatu7.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/paule.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/RickSteiner3.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ScottSteiner22.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/missyhyatt.jpg

The Samoan Swat Team vs. The Steiners

[A pretty short match but it was definitely hard-hitting. Rick Steiner took down both Samu and Fatu early on with Steinerlines. But they came back and took him down with some headbutts. Paul E. Dangerously advised the Samoan Swat Team from the outside while Missy Hyatt provided a definite distraction. Scott Steiner took over Fatu with an overhead belly to belly suplex that sent Fatu out of the ring. Scott tagged in his brother and lifted Samu up on his shoulders -- Steiner Bulldog! Rick Steiner made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: The Steiners (Via Pinfall @ 5:33)

Match Rating: B-

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/gordonsolie.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting4.jpg

[A video was shown of earlier on when The Great Muta attacked Sting. As the video ended, Gordon Solie was shown catching up with Sting in the back. Gordon asked Sting about the attack and Sting said he didn't want to talk about it. He was obviously angry and his facepaint was smeared all over his face. He threw a chair across the hallway and stomped off with Gordon maintaining his distance from an obviously angry Sting.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #3

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sidvicious3.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/danspivey2.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/theadorerlong.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/brianpillman.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/tomzenk.jpg

The Skyscrapers vs. Flyin' Brian and Z-Man

[A pretty short tag team encounter that saw Brian and Z-Man try their best against the members of The Skyscrapers but Sid Vicious and Dan Spivey no-sold all of their moves. Sid Vicious sent Flyin' Brian spinning around with a big clothesline. Dan Spivey locked Z-Man in a Bearhug and squeezed the submission out of him.]

Winners: The Skyscrapers (Via Submission @ 6:05)

Match Rating: B-

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/paulellering.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/hawk3.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/animal3.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/jimmygarvin-1.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/MichaelHayes7-1.jpg

[Paul Ellering escorted The Road Warriors out to the interview area. They spoke about their tag team encounter with The Fabulous Freebirds at Fall Brawl. The Road Warriors are not just your average geeks down the block. They have the power, speed and the intelligence to take on any team. They were interrupted by the presence of the NWA World Tag Team Champions The Fabulous Freebirds! The Freebirds began a shoving match with the Road Warriors and the brawl was on between both teams! Animal dropped Garvin with a clothesline but Hayes took out Hawk! Officials came out to break things up between these four men and the heat is already building for their match at Fall Brawl!]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ripmorgan.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/SteveWilliams2.jpg

Rip Morgan vs. Steve Williams

[Dr. Death was the obvious favorite in this match against Rip Morgan. The fans really didn't care to see Rip inside the ring even though he was dominated by the former member of the Varsity Club. Williams took Morgan down with a clothesline and then a military press! The crowd was definitely behind Williams as he lifted Morgan up on his shoulder. He ran from one side of the ring to the other side and then planted Morgan with the Oklahoma Stampede. Williams made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Steve Williams (Via Pinfall @ 8:29)

Match Rating: D+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #5

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/rickysteamboat2.jpg

Terry Funk vs. Ricky Steamboat

[Our main event of the evening and what a main event it is! Two of the top wrestlers of this generation going one on one inside the middle of the ring. Despite the amount of talent shown between these two wrestlers, something just didn't click between them and the match was not as good as it normally would have been. Their timing was just a few seconds off inside the ring. Steamboat took control during the match and hit Funk with chops and a big clothesline and then an armdrag right into a dropkick! Funk exited the ring where another man came out to ringside.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/luger.jpg

[The Total Package Lex Luger came out and conferred with Terry Funk for a moment before Funk entered the ring. Funk used a rake of the eyes to gain the advantage and then took down Steamboat with some solid technical wrestling. The crowd tried to rally behind The Dragon during the match and Steamboat used some of that crowd exposure to make a comeback. Steamboat took down Funk with a back drop and then headed to the top turnbuckle. Steamboat looked to leap off the top but he got knocked off by Lex Luger! Gary Hart distracted the official so that he didn't see the shove! The crowd booed and Funk lifted Steamboat and set him up -- Texas Piledriver! Funk made the cover, hooking the leg:]

[...1...

...2...

...3!]

Winner: Terry Funk (Via Pinfall @ 20:25)

Match Rating: B

[The NWA United States Champion rolled into the ring as the bell sounded and Luger began putting the boots to the downed Dragon. Gary Hart began directing things as Luger lifted Steamboat -- Human Torture Rack! Luger put Steamboat in the rack to boos from the crowd. The boos turned to cheers as they were joined in the ring by another wrestler.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpg

[it's Ric Flair! The Nature Boy made the save for Ricky Steamboat, bringing him down off the rack and chopping the chest of Terry Funk. He threw punches to Luger and Luger and Funk escaped the ring, leaving Flair and Steamboat inside alone. Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat stood tall as the show came to a close.]

[The crowd raised in cheers as the show started with Paul Ellering leading the Road Warriors down to the ring. Paul Ellering got on the microphone and began with talking about how the Road Warriors are the most dominant tag team in the history of the National Wrestling Alliance. They beat the Midnight Express once before for the belts and now the Fabulous Freebirds are the next team that is gonna fall to the power, might and speed of the Road Warriors, the Legion of Doom.]

[Paul Ellering was interrupted by the presence of the NWA Tag Team Champions The Fabulous Freebirds. Michael Hayes told Paul Ellering not to count his chickens before they hatch. They still have to get past the best team in the world: The Fabulous Freebirds. The Freebirds enter the ring and a brawl breaks out between The Road Warriors and the Freebirds! The Road Warriors clear the ring to a thunderous ovation from the crowd.]

The Great Muta vs. Z-Man

[Our opening bout here on NWA's World Championship Wrestling was a fast-paced match between two high fliers. The Great Muta caught Z-Man with a springboard kick early on in the match, securing a two count. Z-Man took down Muta with a body slam later on in the match and got set up in the corner. He was ready to catch Muta with a Savate Kick but Muta ducked the kick! Muta quickly ascended the turnbuckles -- Moonsault Press! Muta turned it into a cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: The Great Muta (Via Pinfall @ 10:19)

Match Rating: C+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting4.jpg

[The Great Muta won this opening bout but he was assaulted by the man he will face at Fall Brawl: Sting! Sting took down Muta with a clothesline and then whipped him into the corner -- Stinger Splash! Sting got set up for the Scorpion Deathlock but several people came running in from the back.]

[A pre-taped interview was shown with the Steiners and Missy Hyatt standing in front of a generic grey background. Scott Steiner began things talking about this mysterious Doom that Woman is promising for them. He is not too worried about this Doom because Woman's revenge will not be happening. Rick Steiner barked and then said that Woman is no cat's meow. She is going to go to the doghouse courtesy of the Dog-Faced Gremlin.]

The Iron Sheik vs. Steve Williams

[A dominating match that served as a bathroom break for many of the fans both watching on tv and within the arena. Steve Williams dominated this match against The Iron Sheik from the beginning to the end when he hit Sheik with the Oklahoma Stampede and made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Steve Williams (Via Pinfall @ 5:53)

Match Rating: D

[As Williams celebrated the victory, The Varsity Club came running in and assaulted him! Williams tried to fight them off but the numbers game proved to be too much. Mike Rotundo lifted Williams up for the Airplane Spin as the crowd suddenly cheered.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/JunkYardDog.jpg

[it's the Junkyard Dog! JYD hit the ring and took out Sullivan with a headbutt and then a clothesline to Rotundo! JYD dropped down on all fours and barked as the Varsity Club left the ring. Dr. Death pulled himself up to his feet and a staredown ensued.]

Match #3

Dan Spivey vs. Beautiful Bobby Eaton

[sid Vicious came down to the ring with his tag team partner Dan Spivey and Teddy Long. This was a relatively short match between these two whose teams will meet at Fall Brawl. Eaton tried to stay away from the power of Spivey by using his quickness as compared to the Dangerous One. Eaton was able to get Spivey up and over in a vertical suplex and then headed to the top turnbuckle. He looked out toward Spivey and then got shoved off by the powerful hand of Sid Vicious, causing the DQ!]

Winner: Beautiful Bobby Eaton (Via Disqualification @ 5:52)

Match Rating: B-

[sid stepped in the ring and put the boots to Bobby Eaton at the leadership of Teddy Long. Teddy looked to Sid and then called for the Power Bomb! Sid tucked Bobby Eaton in between his legs when someone came running in from the back.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/stanlane.jpg

[it's Stan Lane! And he's got a tennis racket! Lane enters the ring and swings the tennis racket at Sid Vicious! He knocks Sid backward and Sid falls over the top rope to the floor. Dan Spivey gets out of there and Stan Lane looks fierce as he stands inside the ring protectively over his tag team partner.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpg

[Another pre-taped interview plays. This time the focus is on the NWA World Heavyweight Champion 'The Nature Boy' Ric Flair! Flair says that everyone knows that they have to step up and pay the price to be the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. He has bled for this gold. He has given his heart and soul to be the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. Whooooo! At NWA presents Fall Brawl, Terry Funk is going to have to walk that aisle against the man who has proven that he is the best: Ric Flair. Can Terry Funk prove that he's a better man on that night? Well, they will just have to wait and see because The Nature Boy is going to bring it with everything in him. Whooooo!]

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting4.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/boborton.jpg

NWA World Television Title Match

Sting defends vs. 'Cowboy' Bob Orton

[sting took one hellacious beating earlier on at the hands of the J-Tex Corporation so he was not 100 percent coming into this match. 'Cowboy' Bob Orton took advantage of that early on with forearm smashes and a clothesline that brought Sting down to the mat. Orton dropped Sting with a backbreaker in the center of the ring and held onto it, trying to gain a submission victory here tonight but Sting would have none of that. He is never one to give up in a match, especially a title match.]

[The next few minutes were spent with Orton still in control and Sting fighting from underneath. The crowd got into the match, got into the battle and Sting started to come back. Sting fought out of a Superplex attempt and dropped a big elbow right to the heart of 'Cowboy' Bob Orton! Sting pulled Orton to his feet and whipped him hard into the turnbuckle -- Stinger Splash! Orton staggered in the corner and then fell to the mat. Sting grabbed the legs -- Scorpion Deathlock! Sting held onto the move in the center of the ring and Orton had no choice but to submit.]

Winner: Sting (Via Submission @ 8:20; Sting retains the NWA World Television title)

Match Rating: C+

Match #5

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/luger.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/rickysteamboat2.jpg

Terry Funk and Lex Luger vs. Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat

[Two Champions and two top contenders within this match as the top contender for the NWA World Heavyweight title: Terry Funk teams up with the United States Champion Lex Luger to take on the NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair and the top contender to the United States title Ricky Steamboat. The two Champions Lex Luger and Ric Flair started off the match. Luger flexed to boos from the crowd. Flair just smiled and gave a strut that brought cheers out from the crowd. Luger waved him off and then climbed the turnbuckles and flexed his muscles, getting even more boos from the crowd. Luger motioned to Flair. Flair just smiled and leaned into a turnbuckle, releasing a 'Whoooooo!' which was echoed by the crowd. Luger stepped in toward Flair and the two men locked up in the center of the ring. Luger used his superior strength to push Flair back in the corner. Referee Nick Patrick looked for a clean break. Luger went for a forearm smash but Flair dodged to the side, turning Luger into the corner. Flair began chopping the rock-hard chest of the Total Package. Luger flexed and Flair backed off, obviously needing a different strategy against the chiseled physique of Lex Luger.]

[The next few minutes are spent with Flair and Steamboat in total control. They mix in quick tags and definitely seem to make each other better with each passing moment. They focus on the arm of Luger with Steamboat using a few of his patented arm drags. He locks in an armbar on Luger and really wrenches it in. Luger manages to work his way back to his feet, grabbing Steamboat by the hair. He tosses the Dragon over the top rope but Steamboat holds on to the top rope! Luger shows off, flexing for the crowd, though he is favoring the arm that Flair and Steamboat have been working on. Steamboat uses the ropes to pull himself back up and into the ring but Luger is there with a clothesline that sends Steamboat back over the top and to the floor this time. Luger moves over and tags out to Terry Funk. Funk drops off the apron and moves around to Steamboat -- clothesline! He sends Steamboat down on the outside with a clothesline! He picks up Steamboat and rams him back-first into the side of the ring. He yanks Steamboat up and into the ring. Funk joins him in and makes a cover:]

[...1...

...2...

...Kickout!]

[The next few minutes are spent with Funk and Luger in control. Funk is mostly inside the ring against Steamboat, keeping the Dragon in their corner. They entice the Nature Boy in the ring a few times and double-team Steamboat to boos from the crowd. Funk whips Steamboat to the ropes and lowers his head -- facebuster by Steamboat! The crowd pops as both men lie on the ground looking to their corners. Slowly they begin moving toward their corners to tag out. Funk tags in Luger, who rushes over but Steamboat makes the tag! Ric Flair comes in with punches and chops for the chest and head of Luger! Flair takes down Funk with a clothesline! The Nature Boy gives a little strut and then clips the knee of the Total Package! Flair slides Luger's knee on the bottom rope and then leaps down on it! The Nature Boy does a strut and releases a 'Whooooo!' Flair pulls up Luger and sends him into the corner -- reversed! Flair goes flipping over the top turnbuckle to the apron. He runs across -- clothesline by Luger! Flair drops down and rolls inside the ring. Luger picks up Flair and he sends him to the ropes -- Powerslam! Luger makes the cover:]

[...1...

...2...

...Broken Up By Ricky Steamboat!]

[steamboat exits the ring quickly and Luger pulls up Flair -- Small Package by Flair: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! So close to a flash pinfall! Flair ducks a clothesline by Luger -- CHOP! CHOP! CHOP! Flair takes Luger down to a knee by kicking the knee he was working on earlier. The Nature Boy throws a stiff punch to the jaw of Luger and then moves over and tags out to Steamboat! Steamboat ascends the turnbuckles. Luger slowly reaches his feet and turns -- Flying Body Press! Steamboat remains on him as Flair goes over and begins brawling with Funk:]

[...1...

...2...

...3!]

Winners: Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat (Via Pinfall @ 19:50)

Match Rating: B+

[Ricky Steamboat just pinned the United States Champion! Ric Flair and Terry Funk's fight spills outside the ring and we're out of time! We'll see you next week right here on World Championship Wrestling!]
