WEEK 3 February 2010

Who's the GM? Could it Be You?by Fred Jones - PW Candle Senior Columnist

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r203/gratefulcowboy/pw%20candle/Fred.jpg

Welcome to this week's installment of the grumpy old man column known the world over as, well, my weekly column. Sometimes they try to say "A Fred Jones Flashback" but I think that's just a little too silly. Does every remembrance have to be a flashback? Is the implication that I've taken drugs in the past? Whatever the motivation, the title wasn't mine. It was left to the brilliant editors of the PW Candle, whom I respect and admire as much as anyone even though they routinely engage in elder abuse.

Since you can't cough in print, or clear your throat, I'll move on to the big news of the week - the announcement that there's going to be an announcement about the new TCW General Manager on the next episode of some television show. And word from our TCW beat writer Brint Williams is that it will be someone from inside the company. Wow, what drama.

I'll tell you two ways it could go - the smart way, and the TCW way. And maybe give you a nice little story from the past to tie the whole room together.

The smart way is obvious: Tommy Cornell. The guy is 31 years old, he owns the company, he's done everything there is to do inside a wrestling ring, and will be in the Hall of Immortals when he does decide to retire. He doesn't need the wear-and-tear on his body anymore even though he might be the company's only legitimate draw right now with Rocky Golden out of the picture. This could be the perfect fit to limiting his on-screen action and would give us a reason to become more involved with First Class if Troy Tornado and Wolf Hawkins have Cornell in the front office helping them out.

The TCW way is also obvious: Harry Allen. Well, he's presumably a cowboy or somesuch, and has been on the air once or twice in 2010 so could be someone Charles "Chuck" Alexander could "make loyal" if you want to buy into the hinted-at storyline that Chuck is building alliances for a huge future move. Seriously, Harry Allen.

Exactly 400 years ago at this time, a friend of mine called Galileo Galilei had just set the world on its head by revealing that the Sun, not the Earth, was at the center of the universe. As you can imagine, as a young soot-faced street tough I was privy to overhearing all manner of conversation about the discovery, everyone from laundry maiden to Senators calling him all such a word from a Satan worshiper to a convert of the Greek gods and much, much worse. So despite all of the heat Gal Gal took, he came out in the end smelling like a Roman bath because he was correct.

And that's the moral of the story. We're going to hate whoever the pick is. It's going to stink. But we'll get over it. But will it be a Gal Gal moment? Or will it be a TCW moment?

Stay tuned good people, this should be interesting.

Not much to say this week. It’s all GM all the time.
Prediction Key:

Who is the new TCW General Manager? I think it will be Archie Judge. Some things you have mentioned initially in passing have turned into major storylines and he's out of left field.

I think I asked this once before but where in NJ are you? I'm also in New Jersey! And like the others that mentioned it I loved the zero defenses story built-in to the Booker change. Things seem to be going good KUTGW.

I want Fred Jones' autograph as my prize!

Prediction Key:

Who is the new TCW General Manager? Bruiser Brody? Oh wait that is my stock answer for the real world. Um...how about Jasmine Saunders, I was going to go with Swoop because that was what the average fan is thinking. However, why not go with an odd answer.

THE FAN'S VIEW

Straight Talk from PW Candle Readers

Rick from New Mexico writes...

Not going to introduce myself since it says my name as the author of the article. Don't need to pimp myself out to the new generation, so you'll notice I might not agree with my "friend" Fred too much. Then again, I'm not going to pansy around like that Brint fellow either. I get it. You're trying to be objective, not step on anyone's toes, trying to see the good tin things. Problem? You come out sounding like a nobody.

That said, Brint knows how to organize an article a hell of a lot better than Fred, so I'll be borrowing his breakdown schtick for a moment.

-About Rocky Golden leaving: Good. The kid's new, I refuse to believe he beat Cornell cleanly, and he can't put a headlock on a wet paper sack. I suppose I shouldn't say that I'm glad he's sick, but I just remembered that I don't care if I'm a touch offensive. Rocky, the only thing you were good for was to look imposing, and they got that Mikey guy for that. Goodbye.

-Saturday Night Showcase: It's a wrestling show. I'll watch it, and if/when it's horrible I won't. Not going to complain about it like some people then keep on giving them my viewership.

-I'll skip over the details of a roster breakdown because, frankly, I don't have the time right now. And if I'm going to comment on one person, probably should go through the whole thing. Then again, I don't need to self-serve like Fred to get attention, so I'm probably just going to shut up about it.

-Before I reveal my pick for the mystery GM, allow me to explain why he (it is a guy) isn't going to make a tournament for the Heavyweight belt.

Tournaments are full of losers. Sure, the winner comes out looking golden (pun intended, sickboy). Second place? Probably not that bad either. If you have to go through three or four rounds, losing in the finals is respectable enough.

Problem is, we got guys that lose in the first round. The quarters and semifinal losers are...just guys I don't care about. Why am I watching fights between two losers early on? If you're putting in Cornell or Vessey or someone...just make it a fourway between the top guys. Don't make me sit through stuff that should be in the dark.

-About that GM: Who's new enough that they won't go with an obvious tournament? Who wants to shake things up?

Simple:

Swoop. McCarthy.

It makes perfect sense. What does a GM do? He talks, makes matches, and maybe gets in the ring. Swoop hasn't touched the ropes since his debut, yet he's ran wild over half the roster. And justifiably. So he's got the chops, he's got the smarts, and I hear he's passable in the ring. I'm not wasting my pick on a god like Cornell. And Sam Keith? Hell, his boys have themselves a little story so the big man doesn't need to favor them. It's McCarthy.

Also, McCarthy. McCarthyism. Communism. Swoop steals Marat Kholov from SWF then buries him to the whole roster. Bank on it.

I'm out. Don't write; I really don't care about your opinions.

_______

OOC: Many thanks to Eidenhoek for this contribution to the Candle and looking forward to future contributions. If anyone else also wants to give it a go please feel free to PM me, any idea is workable.

WEEK 3 February 2010

LIVE COVERAGE! of TCW Presents Total Wrestling

by Brint Williams - PW Candle TCW Columnist

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r203/gratefulcowboy/pw%20candle/2009-04-07-businessman.jpg

Week 3 February 2010

Venue: The Evanovich Riverside (Tri State)

Attendance: 9,350

Live! on GNN Total Sports

Due to a freakishly severe outbreak of head lice in the greater South West area, Total Championship Wrestling has been sent scrambling to the east coast for what many expect to be one of the more memorable episodes of Total Wrestling this year. We’re all so exhausted about the General Manager talk – but get ready for more. Surely there’ll be plenty of analysis to come of the selection.

Some events took place before the show went on the air:

D1 – The L.A. Connection vs. Joel Bryant & Greg Keith

Coming off a win last week against Running Wolf & Clark Alexander, Bryant & Keith had a chance to get some momentum on their side with a match against the established L.A. Connection. But it wasn’t to be. After some good action in front of an ambivalent crowd, Aaron Andrews pinned Keith at 8:26 with a Flying Body Press.

My rating: 61: Solid displays all around. One of those live-action training matches we sometimes write about.

D2 – Prudence & Parker vs. Robert Oxford & Matt Keith

There was really no sustained offense at all for Oxford & Keith in this one and James Prudence got a submission on Matt Keith at 7:48 with a Prudential Pain Plan.

My rating: 67: Similar story – the established team goes over and everyone gains some experience.

-Show begins right on Jason Azaria and Kyle Rhodes standing in the middle of the ring. They introduce everyone to Total Wrestling and that tonight is a night that will go down in Total Championship Wrestling history as the company was going to name the new General Manager. Azaria said that Kyle has a list of the nine finalists and he was going to announce them.

Rhodes announced Archie Judge first, and the 53-year old came out to some polite applause from some of the older folks in the crowd.

Once Judge was in the ring and had waved to the fans a bit, Kyle Rhodes announced Charles Alexander, and the 21-year old Head Booker made his way to the ring to some cheers from the Tri State crowd. Next Rhodes called for Jasmine Saunders, the 24-year old colour commentator who was just named as part of the Saturday Night Showcase announce team and will debut in that capacity next month. A shower of boos and shocked expressions could be heard and seen when Joel Bryant was the next name on the list. The 39-year old former Head Booker milked the heat on his way to the ring and smirked at Judge, Alexander and Saunders as if they had no chance. Bryant started laughing and pointing at Saunders specifically until Tommy Cornell’s music hit and Rhodes announced the TCW owner as finalist #5.

Rhodes paused, and put the mic down to his side for a second and shook his head before he read #6. Then he said: "Number Six, Number Six is my broadcast colleague Swoop McCarthy." 21-year old Swoop came out dressed to the nines in a fantastic suit to a chorus of "Swoooooop" calls from the crowd members before a "Swoop-Swoop-Swoop" chant broke out. McCarthy made no fuss about the reaction and coolly entered the ring with the others.

Rhodes then announced the last three finalists, the final finalists if you will, 27-year old Rick Law, 49-year old Sam Keith, and 40-year old Karen Killer.

Azaria and Rhodes exited the ring and went to the announce table while all nine finalists remained in the ring.

All of the finalists in the ring quickly look above them as if they are expecting a cage to drop from the ceiling. Nothing happens because there is no cage on the ceiling. Tommy Cornell approaches Charles Alexander and whispers someting to him. Cornell and Chuck then exit the ring and join Azaria and Rhodes at the announce table. Cornell tells Azaria that he and Chuck are taking themselves out of the running because it would be a conflict of interests. That leaves seven finalists in the ring - Archie Judge, Jasmine Saunders, Swoop, Joel Bryant, Rick Law, Sam Keith and Karen Killer.

Saunders is the next to excuse herself, and she did so while giving a plug to Saturday Night Showcase. Joel Bryant looked over Swoop McCarthy and shook his head as if he couldn't believe the unproven youngster was still in the ring with him. Good stuff from Bryant. Judge is starting to look a little out of place. Rick Law keeps a distance from everyone and Karen Killer rebuffs Sam Keith's attempts at chatting.

Keith moves over to Bryant and Bryant nods in agreement. Rick Law gets up in Archie Judge's face and this brings boos from the crowd. Judge puts his hands up as if he doesn't want a confrontation. Law grabs a mic and says if that's how Judge reacts to a confrontation he has no business being General Manager. Judge takes a long moment, there is a painfully long close-up on his face, and regretfully agrees with Law and exits the ring. Rick Law, Sam Keith, Joel Bryant, Swoop, and Karen Killer remain.

Kyle Rhodes comments that at this pace there will be no General Manager because everyone will have bowed out.

Been too long to restart this one with the proper amount of zeal.

I think I'm going to keep the PW Candle idea and run it for USPW, which I've been playing as a lot recently, or another (more unusual) fed.

But I also have always wanted to do more of a year-by-year or month-by-month watcher sort of diary where I can get involved in tons of minutia. I think that's more my comfort zone and would stand the best chance for a long-running dynasty. So maybe I'll book out a month and then have the PW Candle team report on the fed in monthly recaps (because, in theory, they wouldn't be big enough to have dedicated reporters).

Not exactly sure which fed yet though to get the treatment.
