~ The Golden Age: 1987 Official Release ~

Recommended Posts

Since this was brought up.... I have a small question. It is a question though, as I'm not sure about exactly what the stat would do with everything, but I will share what I believe (and my potential issue).

Certain workers were VERY popular in 1987, but.... not quite the megastar they become later. Flair and Hogan for example..... Both mega popular, and probably impossible to become more popular then Hulk was at this time period. However, they were not yet considered "Legends" or "Icons", etc. They are now however.

The way I understand the game engine, is at a certain point/age, and other random elements, a worker will seize to get better in Physical area's, and certain abilities. However, there is a possibility they can still get better with mental stats (Charisma, mic skills, etc).

Setting potential low, and very low on individuals... Won't that bassically top them out where they are in everything, and the only way is downhill from there. I'd much prefer that be set to random, then to limit them, especially when within 10 to 12 years later both (Flair and Hogan) reach new heights in character development, not to mention becoming living legends in the ring.

Potential I'm 99% sure (from memory) is in ring ability only. I don't think they improved much at all from that time period on. I know potentials are a touchy subject with some but I felt they were needed here and there for this mod (I've deleted them in ones past at request of players). If a strong case can be made for guys like Hogan and Flair (or others preset) improving considerably in the ring from that time on I'm happy to reset.

I know what you mean about mega popular also dj but remember populaity in TEW is defined as their popularity amongst wrestling fans. I don't think Hogan became more of a draw than he was in 1987, in fact I don't think many wrestlers ever did :p While I agree the heights he took WCW to during the 90's definitely took Hogan's legacy to another level but in TEW terms that's got everything to do with the industry being red hot as a whole, TV and PPV providers opening rapidly and everywhere, Era's and a few other things.

Pretty sure yes, even if it weren't I still don't see how any of the guys mentioned (Hogan, Flair) improved in any area from 1987. Both guys were past 35 and had been around 10+ years, also both at the top of their game if not slightly past it.

Hmm. But if potential is strictly connected to in-ring abilities, then how can one make it so that a worker improves in other areas? Like entertainment skills especially.

Goldberg could kick Hakus ass. Linebacker in the NFL is a beast! Even the worst ones can light people up.

Haku would lay Luger out cold though. Haku could really fight while Luger knew how to lift weights.

A big part of the reason cards suffer and cost WWF pop is because I've set the TV show WWF Superstars as an "A" Show. It really wasn't, not compared to what we or TEW consider an A show. I did have it set as an "A" show but WWF being as big as they are always sign a deal for an A show straight up, name it something else and dump a show.

The best advice I can give for A shows is what someone already mentioned about using guys with most pop. Check what area you're running in, don't foget this time period wasn't too far removed from the territory days. Alot of guys were over and in contrast not so over in certain parts of the USA in even in the major promotions.

In my WWF game using this mod I run very strong A Shows, always using either Steamboat, Savage or Roberts (atm) on top, their opponent is never anyone below midcard. I add to that a bunch of angles using all the guys to their strengths, pop, ent etc.

To help boost the overall rating I begin every show, whether its TV or PPV with a video which I think is called 3 vs 2 where I just show the 5 most over workers I have. In my case it's savage, steamboat, hogan, piper, and andre. Usually gets me at least an 80 which helps balance out my hit and miss further on down the card.

Dark match 10 man battle royals usually net me a 75 as well with a positive reaction from the crowd.

Depends on who isn't booked to wrestle on the show. I'm trying to get my horsemen over and gaining skills, so it's usually AA, Tully, Windham, Dibiase and then maybe Demoltion, along with some of the midcard stepping stones I've signed like Snuka and Slaughter. Then I toss in two of my young lion types (HBK, Gilbert, Sting, Hennig) to help them gain some skills.

The problem with battle royals is that you have 1 winner and 9 losers. Losing all the time is good for noone, and having a match every week where 9 of your people loses is not a viable idea in the long run imo.

Goldberg could kick Hakus ass.

This is the opposite of true. Jericho beat up Goldberg. Chris Jericho. The guy with the poof of hair on the top of his head. Haku was a trained sumo wrestler and was all around tough as nails.

While this is true... it's worth mentioning that losing in a battle royal would be good for your E- pop E momentum guys. If a guy has a match that is significantly better graded than his momentum he will gain despite a loss. If your E momentum guy takes place in a C rated battle royal it will raise his mom.

That logic can't be carried over to losing every week though... in the long run you are absolutely correct.

I may just have to start over with a different company. WWF has so many people with booze and drugs that my backstage is down to 75% after a month (and after I fired a bunch of bad influences too). I've got a bunch of good road agents but I get at least one fight/argument a week and some of these stars can't get over a 70 for an interview because of their backgrounds (Roberts).

Very disappointing because I loved where I was headed with storylines.

With JCP i have been very agressive in tackling the drug issues. I fired the unrequired and cut my roster down to under a 3rd of its size, i hired in no more than 5 guys, 2 of them were also having drug issues. I set my drug testing to extreme and i tested the roster every single day for 3 months.

This ofc nuked my backstage down to 0% and made some people hate me, but it also made a number of them loyal to me and i managed to get them all for the most part clean of drugs, with exception to Luger, Brian Pillman and Shane Douglas who still had issues and promptly got jobbed out and fired.

My cards took a clear hit for 6 to 9 months, i dont remmber exactly but it was closer to 6 than 9, in eaither case eventualy my rateing went back up to around 70% backstage and i had managed to eaither filter out from my roster anyone who still hated my guts or change their mind or wait it out (simmering tensions dont seem to last too long).

In eaither case i was left with a roster that was drug free, a fair number of them loyal to me with 6-9 months worth of push under them and WWF unable to steal them from me, and my cards jumped from C+ cards (that were still increasing my orgs pop because i ran them in locals i had little pop) all the way to B+ shows on the basis of my backstage rateing going up because the time had expired on the drug issues i no longer had...

And of course my workers are having better matchs because of it... Now i cant seem to do much about the smokers or the drinkers, but i grit my teeth and i took the hit, and now im only hireing people i think i can easily fix or dont have drug issues...

Its the hit the WWF had to take in the early 90s, why not start it a little earlier and just.... solider on past it?
