WWF 1989: Kayfabe Returns

Recommended Posts

Great show and w00t, my once favorite tag team Demolition (my road towards becoming a metalhead was clear back then already, what with their gear and all hehe) as champs - w00t again, :p ... Another fine dose of the old school, loving this. Btw DAMN YOU Snuka for ruining a perfect prediction round for me ^^, try harder next time mmmkay? :p

Thanks man! I have some interesting plans for Demolition, which is why I felt now was the time to put the titles on them. And never bet against Haku!

Hahaha, oh so thats what drew me to the Rockers during this era??

Excellent show dude... definitely had a classic SNME 'feel' to it with Savage, Perfect and DiBiase all pointing at each other, the Roberts/Piper segment and the Andre turn which helped the Warrior prevail. Cheers.

Just curious though if your Survivor Series (which is your next big one I assume) is gonna have all four-on-four survival matches or are there gonna be title matches too?

Really appreciate the nice words! My favorite show to write thus far.

As for Survivor Series, the only non-elimination style match I plan on having is Rude vs. Warrior for the IC Title. For storyline purposes, I feel that I need to have that match on that particular show. Everything else will stick to the old school Survivor Series format though.

<p>Just caught up with this diary and I must say you're doing an awesome job of elevating Mr Perfect - I've no idea how the storyline is going to play out but I'm pretty sure that Curt is going to stay near the top of the card when the smoke settles!</p><p> </p><p>

Predictions then:</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Rick Martel </strong>vs. Ronnie Garvin</p><p>

<em>The Model is the perfect guy to be getting people ready for the Ravishing One at the moment - I just don't think Ronnie is that guy!</em></p><p> </p><p>

Greg Valentine vs. <strong>Jim 'The Anvil' Neidhart</strong></p><p>

<em>The Hammer is a great midcard JTTS at this point - a win over him makes you look credible</em></p><p> </p><p>

Jimmy Snuka and Koko B. Ware vs. <strong>Powers of Pain</strong></p><p>

<em>With Demolition on top - heels need to be built</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>The Rockers</strong> vs. The Rougeau Brothers</p><p>

<em>The Rockers gained a lot from their series with The Harts, can't see it being wasted on Jacques & Raymond</em></p><p> </p><p>

MAIN EVENT SINGLES MATCH</p><p>

<strong>Million Dollar Man</strong> vs. Tito Santana</p><p>

<em>Tito was, is and forever will be my favourite JTTS - a man who knew how to do the right thing for business. He's staring at the lights here, no question!</em></p>

Rick Martel vs. Ronnie Garvin

The push to the moon continues.

Greg Valentine vs. Jim 'The Anvil' Neidhart

Toss up.

Jimmy Snuka and Koko B. Ware vs. Powers of Pain

Just cause I Love the pairing. The P.O.P. are on the decline at the moment. A clash with the Rougeaus could be entertaining for Snuka and Koko.

The Rockers vs. The Rougeau Brothers

Hotter team.

MAIN EVENT SINGLES MATCH

Million Dollar Man vs. Tito Santana

Nice try chico.

Rick Martel vs. Ronnie Garvin

Why? Because I love "The Model", that's why. I'm glad you're finally giving him some action and wins as of late.

Greg Valentine vs. Jim 'The Anvil' Neidhart

Not really sure where the Harts will be going right now though, with face Demolition holding the straps. I know you probably have good things planned, but that decision feels like a bit of a shot in the foot.

Jimmy Snuka and Koko B. Ware vs. Powers of Pain

Can't see the PoP dropping this one. After all, why showcase them on here now if they're just going to job out, especially in the new title reign?

The Rockers vs. The Rougeau Brothers

As others have said, the Rockers have really gained in profile thanks to the feud with the Harts, and that isn't going to lead into them getting random losses to the Rougeaus. Nothing against Jacques and Raymond, but they're far lower on the totem pole.

MAIN EVENT SINGLES MATCH

Million Dollar Man vs. Tito Santana

No chance for Chico here.

WWF PRIMETIME WRESTLING - Week 3, Oct. 1989

-We cut in to see Gorilla Monsoon and a dejected Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan sitting behind the desk in the Prime Time Wrestling studios.

Gorilla Monsoon - Welcome everyone to Prime Time Wrestling! I’m Gorilla Monsoon, and as you can see, I’m joined by a little more down than usual Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan. Brain, how are things going in the Heenan Family?

Bobby Heenan - Don’t you start on me, Monsoon. You know very well how they’re going.

GM - Why, I’m not sure that I do, Brain. How are the tag team champ…..oh, wait. Well at least Rude is finished with the Warr…..oh, wait.

BH - Keep it up. I’m gonna get Haku up here to teach you a lesson.

GM - How about Andre? He gonna come up here and help you, Brain?

BH - Let’s just roll all the matches without any breaks so we can get this show over with. I’ve got more important things to do than sit beside you, Monsoon.

GM - Yeah I hear the Heenan Family is in a little turmoil. Let’s get to our first match of the evening!

Rick Martel vs. Ronnie Garvin

<a href="

http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=rickmartel5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/rickmartel5.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=ronniegarvin.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/ronniegarvin.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Match Notes: Typical Martel match here, with Martel playing to the crowd and being completely arrogant in his approach to his opponent. Garvin got tired of the shenanigans in the early-going and became the aggressor after a few minutes. Martel managed to take him off his guard with a thumb to the eye, which sent Garvin spinning and trying to regain his sight. Martel then picked up the atomizer near the corner and acted like he was gonna use it. Referee Tim White stopped him and Martel tossed it to the opposite side of the ring. White went to pick it up and get it out of the ring when Martel dropped down and hit a low blow to the still staggering Garvin, who hit the mat in agony. By the time White turned around, Martel was locking on the Boston Crab, and Garvin had no choice but to tap.

WINNER: Rick Martel at 6:03 (60)

GM - Chalk up another victory for Rick Martel, Brain. This guy seems to be getting ****ier by the week.

BH - As he should, Monsoon. Look at the guy. He’s got it all.

GM - Well if he’s got it all then why don’t you have him in the Heenan Family? I hear that there’s a member that you’re gonna need to replace.

BH - Listen here, Monsoon. The Heenan Family is just fine! Unfortunately, word on the street is that someone else has already got to Martel. That’s all I can say right now.

GM - Interesting, Brain. Well good luck replacing someone like Andre. That’ll be nearly impossible.

BH - We’re not replacing Andre. As far as I’m concerned, Andre was never a part of the Heenan Family. But trust me, we’ll be adding a new member soon enough.

GM - Just make sure he doesn’t have a title that he can lose, Brain, since that seems to be the trend here lately for your guys.

BH - Rude still has his title!

GM - But for how long? Speaking of titles though, let’s listen in to Mean Gene Okerlund’s post-match interview with the NEW World Wrestling Federation Tag Team champions, Demolition!

BH - I’m going to the restroom, Monsoon.

Mean Gene Okerlund - “Ax, Smash, you guys were finally able to defeat the Brainbusters, and gentlemen, you’ve got those shiny Tag Team Titles back around your waists once again!”

Ax - “That’s right Mean Gene! All the Brainbusters kept talking about was how they were smarter than us. Well guess what?! It doesn’t matter how smart you are if you don’t win the match! This was our type of match and there was no way that we weren’t gonna walk out of this arena with these titles!”

Smash - “Arn Anderson! Tully Blanchard! How’s it feel right now, huh? Do you feel a little breeze blowing on those guts of yours? I know you do, because these titles no longer belong to you! They are now property of Demolition…..and they always will be! You guys were looking for a thinking contest and we were looking for a fight! So you guys can step to the back of the line because we’re the new champions in the WWF!” (77)

GM - A very confident Demolition team now that they’ve got the gold around their waists. Well folks, the Brain still hasn’t returned from his expedition, so let’s go ahead and get to our next match, featuring one-half of the Hart Foundation taking on Greg Valentine!

Greg Valentine vs. Jim ‘The Anvil’ Neidhart

<a href="

http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=gregvalentine.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/gregvalentine.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=jimneidhart2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/jimneidhart2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Match Notes: An all-out brawl in this one, with two these two guys going at it with lots of aggression. Anvil started off hot, as Valentine appeared to be working off some rust. Valentine started to gain an advantage with some vicious powerslams and hard elbows to a dazed Anvil in the corner. Bret Hart was on the outside cheering on his teammate. Valentine spent a little too much time taunting Hart, and when he went for the Hammer Elbowdrop, Anvil quickly moved out of the way, leaving Valentine holding that right arm. Anvil then gave him a hard irish whip into the corner, and Valentine bounced right off into a huge powerslam, with Anvil covering him for the 1-2-3.

WINNER: Jim Neidhart at 7:39 (65)

- After the match, Hart grabbed a mic and hit the ring with a celebrating Anvil.

Bret Hart - “Well, well, well. So Demolition are the new Tag Team champions here in the WWF, which means they are the team that we have to dethrone to win these titles ourselves. Ax, Smash, let me go ahead and say this. If you think that the Hart Foundation are like the Brainbusters, then you better think again. We don’t get too confident and we don’t overlook our opponents. We know that our championship match is going to test every ounce that we have, both mentally and physically. Enjoy those belts while you can, because me and the Anvil here are coming for them!”

Anvil - “That‘s right, baby! Demolition, we aren‘t a bunch of scared little cheaters like the team that you just beat for those belts! We‘re the Hart Foundation, and we don‘t back down from anyone. We‘ve did everything that we‘ve needed to do to get to the top of the rankings. It‘s our turn to wear those belts!” (79)

GM - Well the top challengers for the Tag Team Titles certainly look ready for battle, as folks, we will have the contract signing for this huge match coming up this week on Superstars, so you won’t wanna miss that!

- The Brain makes his way back onto the set.

GM - Finished throwing up in there, Brain?

BH - I wasn’t throwing up, Monsoon. I was busy finalizing the details on the soon to be newest member of the Heenan Family.

GM - Oh is that, right?

BH - That’s right, Monsoon. We don’t sit around and sulk after something bad happens. We move on and learn from our mistakes.

GM - Are you sure you went to the restroom, Brain? Because you sound like you’re full of…..

BH - Easy now. I’m simply stating the facts.

GM - Well did you happen to hear what the new WWF Tag Team champions had to say? We can replay the tape if you’d like.

BH - I don’t need to hear what they have to say. They cheated and they got lucky. Arn and Tully are still the best team in the World Wrestling Federation, and they don’t need the belts to know that.

GM - I see you’re reaching into your bag of excuses. I knew we’d get there at some point tonight. But let’s get to our next contest!

Jimmy Snuka and Koko B. Ware vs. Powers of Pain

<a href="

http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=JimmySnuka2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/JimmySnuka2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=kokobware2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/kokobware2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=barbarian3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/barbarian3.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=warlord3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/warlord3.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Match Notes: Barbarian and Warlord came out on a mission here, as despite the repeated attempts of the crowd to give some type of an advantage to Snuka and Koko, these two brutes were simply too strong to mount much of an attack. Barbarian was particularly impressive, throwing both men around like rag dolls and not letting either of them get any offense in on him. In the end, Barbarian caught Snuka as he went for a flying crossbody, and turned it into the Swirling Backbreaker to gain the pinfall, while Warlord held off Koko by locking on the Full Nelson.

WINNERS: Powers of Pain at 6:56 (59)

GM - Extremely impressive performance by Mr. Fuji’s duo there, Brain.

BH - Wait, what did you say?

GM - I said an extremely impressive performance by Mr. Fuji’s…..

BH - Fuji’s? What do you…..wait a second, nevermind.

GM - What in the world are you talking about, Brain?

BH - Nothing, Monsoon. Nice win for The Barbarian.

GM - And The Warlord?

BH - Yes, and The Warlord. Of course.

GM - I think you might have hit your head on the way back in a little while ago, but nonetheless, ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to hear from the World Wrestling Federation champion, Hulk Hogan, regarding the events on Saturday Night‘s Main Event!

BH - Nice win.

Hulk Hogan - “HULKAMANIACS, the Hulkster has returned after a few weeks on the shelf, and brother, let me tell ya that it’s good to be back where I belong. And that’s entertaining all of the Hulkamaniacs out there who continue to eat their vitamins and say their prayers. I would’ve been on a hospital bed for another month or two if it was for those two things, but the deal is, I’m back and better than ever now. But let’s talk about what happened at Saturday Night‘s Main Event, brother. The Million Dollar Man, Mr. Perfect, and the Macho Man all took turns trying to convince the red and yellow out there that they were not the one that attacked the Hulkster several weeks ago. Well let me tell ya brother that I smell a rat. There’s no doubt in my mind that one of these cowards decided to get a piece of me in that parking lot. But the problem is, they only got a piece of the Hulkster…..and not the whole thing. I’m going to find out who did this to me, Hulkamaniacs, and right now, I consider all three of them guilty until they’re proven innocent, brother! So DiBiase, Perfect, and Savage, WHATCHA GONNA DO WHEN HULKAMANIA RUNS WILD ON YOU!” (92)

GM - It sure sounds like the Hulkster is gonna do everything in his power to find out which one of these men did this to him, Brain!

BH - It’s a good thought, Monsoon, but Hogan’s not the brightest bulb in the room. I’m not sure his investigation skills are good enough to handle this.

GM - Well as far as we know, Mr. Perfect is still the lead suspect, as President Jack Tunney has offered no further updates on the matter.

BH - Because Tunney has no clue! You can’t convict a man without proof. Perfect walking through the same door as Hogan isn’t proof.

GM - Savage, DiBiase, and Perfect all certainly seem to have differing opinions, but I think it’s clear that one of these men has to be lying out his teeth!

BH - We’ll see, Monsoon. For now, we just have to assume that Hogan tripped on a banana peel and fell into a parked car. Seems like a reasonable explanation to me.

GM - Oh would you stop!

BH - We have no evidence to the contrary, Monsoon. Hogan had a motive too. He didn’t want any part of these three, so he injured himself on purpose.

GM - There’s no way someone like Hogan would pull that kind of stunt. That sounds like more of a Heenan Family trick! And speaking of the Heenan Family, let’s take a look back at the highlights of The Ultimate Warrior taking on ‘Ravishing’ Rick Rude and Andre the Giant!

BH - Oh no…..(dropping his head on the desk)

- We cut to a video showing the highlights of the 2 on 1 match at Saturday Night’s Main Event, and the finish of the match where Andre accidentally hits Rude with the IC title belt. Then we see the post-match antics of Rude and Heenan, which caused Andre to turn on them. (89)

GM - So the Warrior has earned his Intercontinental Title rematch, which means Rude can no longer hide. And he doesn’t have his backup anymore! Anything to add, Brain?

BH - No.

GM - Easy enough. Here’s our next match of the evening, featuring the Rockers taking on the Rougeaus!

The Rockers vs. The Rougeau Brothers

<a href="

http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=martyjannetty6.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/martyjannetty6.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=shawnmichaels6.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/shawnmichaels6.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=jacquesrougeau2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/jacquesrougeau2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=raymondrougeau.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/raymondrougeau.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Match Notes: A superb tag team contest, with the crowd really getting into this one. Their were a ton of near falls in this match, with the Rougeaus convinced that they had scored a win only a minute into the match after Jacques thought that the ref had counted to three on a pin. The Rockers took advantage for a while after that, but then Raymond had the same thing happen to him when he reversed a move by Jannetty and had his shoulders on the mat for what seemed like a three count. The Rougeaus celebrated prematurely once again though, and this time Michaels made them pay as he hit a flying cross-body off the top rope onto both men. He then covered Raymond to score the pinfall.

WINNERS: The Rockers at 10:27 (89!)

GM - What a fantastic tag team contest, with the Rockers bouncing back after their loss to the Hart Foundation in the top contenders match!

BH - While I’ll give credit where it’s due and say that the match was good, still, none of these teams hold a candle to the Brainbusters. Let’s get real here.

GM - Ya know, if that were the case, Brain, then you would think that the Brainbusters would still be the champs. Or even the top contenders. But guess what? They’re neither of those.

BH - Arn and Tully are enjoying a nice little vacation, Monsoon. They’ll be back soon enough, recharged and ready to get those belts back.

GM - Vacation?! Shouldn’t they be working on their skills?

BH - No they shouldn’t. They are the most skilled team in the World Wrestling Federation. Demolition got lucky. That’s all there is to it.

GM - A lot of people would disagree with you there, Brain.

BH - And a lot of people would be morons.

GM - You’re a piece of work. But ladies and gentlemen, let’s take a look back at the highlights surrounding the confrontation between the three main suspects in the attack on Hulk Hogan at Saturday Night’s Main Event! before we get to our featured bout of the night between the Million Dollar Man and Tito Santana!

<a href="

http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=randysavage5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/randysavage5.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=teddibease3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/teddibease3.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=CurtHennig3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/CurtHennig3.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><a href="http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/?action=view&current=hulkhogan5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/TheBlake/hulkhogan5.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

- We cut to a video showing the return of the Macho Man, which was interrupted by the Million Dollar Man. Then we see Perfect joining the mix, and blame being passed around between the three men. Then we see Hogan come in and stare in the ring as the three men circle on the outside before deciding against attacking him. (86)

Million Dollar Man vs. Tito Santana

Match Notes: A great back and forth match, as Tito seemed to be on a mission to upset the Million Dollar Man here. But once the initial adrenaline wore off, DiBiase started controlling the match by focusing on the knee of Santana. DiBiase used several big moves to continue to try and injure the knee, including wrapping Tito’s leg around the post and using all his power to bounce the knee off the steel post. DiBiase did this twice in a row, hoping to leave Tito on the outside long enough for him to be counted out. But each time Tito managed to crawl into the ring just as the referee was about to count to 10. This infuriated DiBiase and he went for a big charging clothesline, but Tito ducked and hit a quick DDT for a near fall. Tito then limped up to go for the Flying Forearm, but DiBiase managed to spin him in mid-air and lock on the Million Dollar Dream. Tito battled for several seconds, and tried to pull towards the ropes, but DiBiase pulled him back to the middle of the ring and Tito’s arm went down three times to give DiBiase the win.

WINNER: Million Dollar Man at 11:42

(83)

- After the match, a winded DiBiase grabbed the Million Dollar belt and played to the crowd. The crowd then started going crazy, and Hulk Hogan made his way down the aisle and slid into the ring. DiBiase begged for Hogan to back off, but Hogan gave him a hard right. DiBiase tried to counter by hitting him with the Million Dollar belt, however, Hogan took it away from him and nailed him with the belt. Hogan then threw the belt down on him and pointed to DiBiase while holding up the number “1.” (100)

GM - What a great match between the Million Dollar Man and Tito Santana, but an even better showing after the match as the champ got a piece of one of the prime suspects in his attack!

BH - Hogan will be sorry for that, Monsoon.

GM - Just like DiBiase or Perfect or Savage will be sorry for attacking him!

BH - That still doesn’t give Hogan the right to attack DiBiase just after he won a match.

GM - Oh c’mon, Brain! The Heenan Family does it after pretty much every match!

BH - Ah whatever, Monsoon.

GM - But that’ll do it for tonight’s show. Thanks for joining us everyone and be sure to tune in next week for more great matches!

Just caught up with this diary and I must say you're doing an awesome job of elevating Mr Perfect - I've no idea how the storyline is going to play out but I'm pretty sure that Curt is going to stay near the top of the card when the smoke settles!

Hey man, thanks for the nomination in the DOTM thread! I really, really appreciate that. Even though my consistency has been a little down the last week or so, I'm still enjoying this and can't wait to see some of my big storylines play out. I've got big things planned for the perfect one!

Haku vs. Tito Santana

Haku to get the rub to pass to someone else. I don't see the former King getting a huge push anytime soon but Tito's day has passed. Sadly.

The Mighty Hercules vs. Jake 'The Snake' Roberts

I don't fancy Herc's chances here against the psychopathic Snake...

Shawn Michaels vs. Jacques Rougeau

I reckon the Rockers are the face team in waiting for Demolition's possible heel turn and Shawn is the stronger member

MAIN EVENT SINGLES MATCH

Brutus 'The Barber' Beefcake vs. Mr. Perfect

Hogan's bestest buddy is doing the job here although not without some shennaigans I reckon!

Haku vs. Tito Santana

Lights out, Chico.

The Mighty Hercules vs. Jake 'The Snake' Roberts

Jake continues his pyschotic in-ring dominance.

Shawn Michaels vs. Jacques Rougeau

I know Michaels has the brighter future, but with The Rockers going over The Rougeaus on the last episode of Prime Time... I think Jacques steals one here. With the well-noted assistance of some foul play, of course.

MAIN EVENT SINGLES MATCH

Brutus 'The Barber' Beefcake vs. Mr. Perfect

Mark my words: I will NEVER pick against Perfect in this diary.

Seem, pretty easy this week... Maybe Santana could go over Haku...

Haku vs. Tito Santana

Hardest match on this card and to be honest I´m just copying everyone else here as I have no idea.

The Mighty Hercules vs. Jake 'The Snake' Roberts

Roberts have more going on, a lot more.

Shawn Michaels vs. Jacques Rougeau

Bigger name

MAIN EVENT SINGLES MATCH

Brutus 'The Barber' Beefcake vs. Mr. Perfect

Perfect is in a same storyline than Hogan so no question about which one is more important right now.
