Sammy Bach vs. A Bunch of Notes

Emma Chase's House

_______________________________________________

A wise man once said, "Bookin' ain't easy."

He was right.

In the days following my meeting with Stallings, I rushed to find out every possible detail about the roster. I personally called each of them, telling them that Eric had chosen me to take the book for this new era of CZCW.

Some guys were ecstatic about my return. I talked to guys like Snap and Mark, who talked with me for hours about the roster and what all had been going on since I left.

http://www2.picturepush.com/photo/a/6184430/1024/CZCW/Fox-Mask.jpg

My conversation with Mark "Fox Mask" Murdoch was the most benefitial since I first talked to Eric outside Dodger Stadium. Mark had recently signed a contract with JK Stallings himself to secure his spot in the Coastal Zone exclusively. Since he was dedicated to this company and its future...he was the head trainer of our famous Coastal Resort wrestling school...Stallings made him an executive with CZCW, Vice President of Talent Relations. He would still wrestle full-time in The Zone, still whip the young guys into shape at the Resort, but now he would become a higher paid employee with a written contract.

It was the least we could do for a guy who has become a living legend in this area.

Whenever Fox stepped into the venue anywhere on the West Coast, people would go nuts. By far the number one indy name on the West Coast, he led the charge of the national tour, as his Internet highlights and California fame made him a true indy standout nationwide. He was getting better in the ring everyday, and that mask was a true Coastal Zone icon.

His buzz on this side of the Mississippi was so great that, at one point, both SWF and TCW offered him a contract. He declined both of them, saying that he came into this business as a one-promotion man, and he intended to retire that way. He was a San Diego native who had no intention of moving him or his family anywhere else.

"Fox Mask is the Coastal Zone, and the Coastal Zone is Fox Mask," Snap told me over the phone. "His legend has exploded in the past couple of years, Sammy."

Mark gave me the ins and outs of the full-time roster and the guys that we picked up from area to area during our tour. Some of them had wowed Mark so much that he told me that signing them full time was a must.

So we did.

Mark let me in on the finer details of each wrestler's talents, character, and attitude backstage. He clued me in on who was the best, who could be the best, and who will just be fine hanging around lower card during their career. This was a gold mine of a conversation, if you ask me.

His notes were combined with the ones Eric scribbled down for me during our meeting with Stallings. Like I had figured, he had indeed heard all of this before and was copying down notes for me during every available timeslot. He just made it look like he was paying attention to the (kind of) bi-polar Stallings, who switched from corporate suit to wrestling nerd several times in his and Eric's first conversations.

Those notes were combined with the information I had gotten from Fox Mask...and Rajesh "The Guru" Patel.

http://www1.picturepush.com/photo/a/6201009/1024/CZCW/The-Guru-alt1.jpg

"G", as everyone backstage called him, was a women's wrestling fanatic. He helped orchestrate the last installment of the CZCW Women's Division, which was cut out by Cliff Anderson back in 1999. This put a real strain on his friendship with Anderson, and they were not on good speaking terms when G left for the SWF.

After a few years of good work out East, G was famously fired, despite still being a popular character on-screen. He took to the wrestling media, shooting on SWF and saying that they didn't care about what talent women could be in the ring...only how much skin they could show. He was being "ousted for eye candy" and he said that Peter Michaels "didn't know anything about women in the wrestling industry". One couldn't figure out if he was angrier about his termination or the portrayal of women in the SWF.

To this day, he makes strong cases for both.

"A women's wrestler can be highly attractive...you don't have to hide her God-given beauty in some ugly outfit like they use in USPW...but it must be obvious that her skills in the ring come first," he told me one afternoon as we discussed AAA's relationship with CZCW and how I had plans to resurrect the division, which he loved. "I mean, if I can't tell what gender Cherry Bomb is because she's in some awful t-shirt and baggy jeans...we've got problems. The women I work with everyday are both deadly wrestling skills AND looks. Let's highlight both without overloading on just their sex appeal."

Our initial Women's Division, which consisted of six non-AAA workers, was hand-crafted by G before he departed to book for Gail Stardust or Anne Ferguson or whatever name she uses...it's hard to keep up when your ring name is nothing like your real one.

So I had notes from everyone who had any pull and experience with the company, and I started to write Wave of Fury. I had a file on my laptop and a hard copy in a file folder for each wrestler.

Stallings had told me he was going to e-mail me with a few workers that he personally signed soon. I had heard stories from his HGC days, how he let Rip and Sam hold down the fort backstage...but a good bit of the roster was hand-picked by him, and they had signed private contracts at StallCorp.

He assured me that he was not going overboard with it, just using some of his influence and money to get a few more workers to fill out the roster.

"Everything that I'm reading is listing us as the definite #4 in the States, at Cult status. We're not as big as USPW or TCW...who I'm happy to report that just was downgraded to that status...but we're on their level so to speak. We're going to need a good-sized roster, and I've got a few wrestlers lined up to join the company for Wave of Fury," one e-mail he sent me said.

Don't get me wrong, I like the guy and all...but it was going to be interesting to see how it was going to be working for him. All of these mysterious dealings with individual wrestlers, his "pay whatever it takes" attitude, and how he can get companies to sponsor us out of the blue, all of that.

He was an interesting character and businessman.

He wanted to hide the fact that Eric was the President, and now the fact that I was part of the company at all. He promised everyone on the roster a raise if the secret didn't get out to any media before Wave of Fury, so lips were sealed all around. I even had to do my part, posting Twitter updates and photos of me just hanging out in Southern California and generally bashing everything that was wrong with wrestling. He even set me up with a personal IT guy who would set me up with Photoshopped pictures of me doing anything that I wanted, as long as it wasn't near San Diego. We didn't want to give anyone any ideas.

I looked at the pictures. No one was ever going to call those bad boys fake. My personal favorite was me trying to climb the foul pole at AT&T Park in San Francisco before a game. I had another one where I was in the middle of the Arizona desert, planking on a cactus.

This got my followers in a frenzy, trying to figure out where I was next. It was a giant game of Where's Waldo?, and it was all fake. I loved it. They had no idea that I was going back in wrestling already, planning a great return to my home.

So here I was, a few days before Wave of Fury, still at Emma's in Los Angeles. I had just bought a condo on the beach in San Diego, a block from where we were going to tape the new show. Stallings set me up with a moving company and an interior designer that would get all my stuff in while I still played hide n' seek with the world.

The plan was to fly me in right before the show, have one quick meeting with the roster backstage before bell time, and hide out in a secluded locker room until it was my time to come home.

Stallings had suggested that we move Wave of Fury from the Chevrolet Del Mar Arena to wat he called The Zone, our new taping venue. From the blueprints and pictures that I had saw since it was built (extremely fast thanks to the power of Stallings' bank, may I add), it was a state-of-the-art venue. We could get a bunch of fans into the place and still make it a very intimate venue. The acoustics in the place would make the crowd's noise reach an unreal level, I was told.

Eric loved the idea, as it would show off the venue to the fans and the rest of the roster. We canceled the Del Mar booking and got The Zone ready for its shining debut.

My phone buzzed, stopping my thought process for a moment. It was a text message from the movers, saying that they had gotten to the condo and were about to move everything in.

I texted my reply and returned back to my notes.

There better not be a single scratch on that new TV when I get there.

Sweet. Can't see anything wrong, except maybe telling everyone that Bach is booking. Someone would let that get out, even with a pay-raise expected. Anonymity and all that. Perhaps if you re-wrote it as Bach discussing the roster with the closest guys like Mask and Dragon?

I meant to write it along those lines. The Eric Tyler situation is the one that Stallings wanted to be a secret. No one besides the vets will know about Sammy being a part of the company (booking can still be a secret to the non-vets) until right before Wave of Fury.

Looks like I'll do a bit of editing, then get right back to work on the roster post.

Good man. Should I put up the second article and break the news about Bach's signing or wait until Wave of Fury? (and should I do an article reviewing the roster before Wave of Fury, as a little intro to incoming fans curious about CZCW?)

And when you mean the booking is a secret to the non-vets, you mean they don't know who's got the book yet, right?

1. Wait until Wave of Fury.

2. The non-vets will be under the impression that Tyler is booking until a later date. More than anything, we want TCW not to know that Sammy is booking until the right time.

And what about the roster review? Pre-Wave or are you doing something on that end yourself. Less work for me and more for you that I can criticise is always fine... :p

Im pretty sure Sammy won't mind the "get it, no matters the cost" way of Stallings when it nets him a nice asset from TCW.

Great work Lev' (your new nickname, so you better get used to it :p ), you've got everyone waiting for more.... actually looking for TCW to fail, which is rather unsual for many of us I'd think.

Fox Mask

Current and Seven-Time CZCW World Champion

Hometown:
San Diego, California

Theme:

Style:
Japanese-influenced Cruiserweight

Finishers:
Fox Flip Off DDT (Springboard DDT), Fox Hunter (Imploding Senton Bomb)

"Fox Mask is the Coastal Zone, and the Coastal Zone is Fox Mask." The West Coast's premier indy star, Fox Mask has been lighting up the Coastal Zone for over a decade. His explosion in popularity in the past two years is contributed to his rabid fanbase throughout the IWC, who have posted his highlights all over the place. With a world-class work rate and undying dedication to CZCW, there is no doubt who the fans come to see in The Zone. He's known for his trademark springboard moves and legendary matches in the company, his latest being a thirty-eight minute ladder match at Welcome to the Coastal Zone 2011. In that match, called the greatest CZCW match ever, he earned the gold once again after throwing Remmy Skye off a ladder and through a table. And that's just one of the countless moments where Fox Mask has proved to be one of the best in the business, especially when he's in his hometown of San Diego.

Sammy's Take: "No one has become such a megastar in one area like Fox has since the territorial days. The entire country finally got to see what Fox is capable of this past year...and they love what they see. If he's wrestling, he's in the zone, no pun intended. This guy is a living legend down here...he'll always be the title holder or close to the top, no matter what."

http://www3.picturepush.com/photo/a/6233496/1024/CZCW/Art-Reed.jpg

Art Reed

2011 Money In The Bank Champion

Hometown:
Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Theme:

Style:
House of Stone

Finishers:
Dread Lock (Inverted CHIKARA Special), Dark Matter (Backflip-to-Falling Back Mat Slam), Hangtime Moonsault (Double Jump Moonsault)

A world-renowned competitor, the "Pure Athlete" Art Reed was one of the biggest signings in CZCW history, joining the company in December of 2010. Since his signing, he's been showing the entire country what he's made of. A former DAVE standout that has spent the last few years in the grueling tours of Pride Glory Honor Wrestling in Japan, Art Reed is a complete wrestler. Trained in the classic Stone technical wrestling style, Art has added more and more Japanese influences to his work, including puroresu and a little bit of super junior style. He can reverse any move and beat you in every way possible. Since winning the trademark match of the Money In The Bank event this May, Art's been waiting for the right moment to strike and become CZCW World Champion.

"Art Reed is a beast. Straight up. A pure wrestling machine. He's been at the top everywhere he has been, and will continue that here in CZCW. He really gives us more legitimacy to our claims of being the best wrestling in the United States, if not the world. Art has gotten better on the mic and has won over the fans in CZCW. I forsee a war between him and Fox Mask in the coming days...one that will split the fanbase in two."

http://www1.picturepush.com/photo/a/6233539/1024/CZCW/Travis-Century.jpg

Travis Century

Hometown:
Monroe, Louisiana

Theme:

Style:
Southern Hardcore and Brawling

Finishers:
The Way of Salvation (Jumping DDT), Baptismal Cleansing (Chokeslam)

Since arriving in CZCW in July, hardcore legend Travis Century has preached about the impending wrath that is coming to CZCW. He claims that big business and godless media has corrupted this company and he plans to turn it back to the light. A DAVE alumnus and current Warrior Engine psycho, Century has been known worldwide for his punishing "outreach" tactics and bringing together a church of his followers. The followers have not arrived yet in CZCW, but Century claims that they will come...and CZCW will never be the same.

"Travis and I got to know each other a good bit back in DAVE. He had a grandfather who was this kind of hellfire and brimstone preacher, so he plays this gimmick to perfection, sort of channeling the Century spirit. His character is rock solid, but his body is not. Time is ticking on this man's career, devastated by several injuries and sick bumps. Still, he is a legend on the mic and can work a great match with almost anyone. He and whatever disciples he can get will bring that hardcore attitude that the CZCW fans have reacted well to recently."

_______________________________________________

http://www4.picturepush.com/photo/a/6233502/1024/CZCW/Donnie-J.jpg

Donnie Jackson

Hometown:
Miami, Florida

Theme:
(credit to Astil)

Style:
East Coast Cruiserweight

Finishers:
Death On Miami Beach (Dragonrana), Heat Wave (Flying Lariat)

Donnie Jackson has spent almost five years trying to end a long and bloody feud between himself and former tag team partner James Prudence. An insane amount of jealousy saw Prudence turn on Jackson when they were still The Fly Boys, and they've spent their time since then at each others throats. Jackson, who is become a staple in CZCW (and a two-time champion), wins the fans with his trademark style of never giving up and never bending the rules. He is the bigger man in the war between him and Prudence...but sometimes that doesn't always translate to wins.

"Donnie Jackson is one of the foundations of the old CZCW. He is the cruiserweight that helped build this company into what it is today, and he has been involved in a long off-and-on storyline. Although I hate these kind of feuds, this one is about to take a nasty turn and I can't wait."

_______________________________________________

http://www1.picturepush.com/photo/a/6233519/1024/CZCW/James-Prudence-alt.jpghttp://www1.picturepush.com/photo/a/6229209/1024/CZCW/Rita-Charles.jpg

James Prudence
w/Rita Charles

Hometown:
Long Beach, California

Theme:
(credit to Astil)

Style:
California Crusierweight

Finishers:
The Prudential Pain Plan (540 Splash), Surf's Up (Cross-armed Surfboard)

He's bold, brash, and bruising. One of the most complete cruiserweights to ever hit the indy scene, James Prudence is a smaller guy who has severely underrated technical skills. He will fly all over the place, then slow it down and make you tap out. Jealous over his partner's title win when they were supposed to be going for the tag titles (or so Prudence claims), Prudence turned on Donnie Jackson, immediately pulling out all the stops to take the title for himself. Since their breakup, he's won the World title twice, one more than Jackson. "The Platinum One" is one of the flashiest men to ever hit the wrestling industry, and he can back all that talk up.

"Between you and me, Prudence is a better wrestler than Jackson...only by a little bit, though. But Jackson is more over with the fans, which keeps this rivalry real interesting. Like I said earlier, this feud is coming to a bitter turn real soon, one that will push both of these men farther than they've ever gone, inside and outside the ring."

_______________________________________________

I looked over the main event scene via my notes and was satisfied in what I saw...to a point.

I know my name will be there as well, which brings up the age-old dilemma in booking: How do I book myself?

Some guys booked themselves with grace, keeping themselves in the midcard and focusing on others first. But others are true stars and they know it, pushing themselves to the stop without regard for anyone else.

Eric said that this would be one of the toughest facets of my job. I'm by far the number one name in the company, of course.

Duh.

But will giving myself a proper push or a title alienate myself from the rest of the roster? Will power go to my head?

I mean, I was the champion back in my backyard days all of the time. Some of my friends didn't like that, but five minutes in the ring with them changed their minds real fast.

But this was real. This was the big-time. I can't do to others what Tommy and them did. Everyone's got an equal shot at the top if they work hard...right?

I was interrupted by an e-mail popup.

JK Stallings' name flashed in big letters on my screen with the subject "New Wrestlers".

I clicked on the e-mail and began reading.

Whoa.

Six names lit up my screen, all of them major acquisitions for the company...two upper card workers that were famous for getting a little insane in the ring, known for their willingness to push the limits and their amazing performances.

There was an import on here that was a major star in their home country, and now is coming to America to get a shot of the big time, thanks to one of our promotional relationships.

There were two more names to add to the Women's Division, big names down in this area, that were personally signed off on by Rajesh.

And the biggest name on the list...

Another DAVE colleague who is one of the most popular workers in America outside of the big leagues, known for five-star matches everywhere he went.

I laughed to myself and ran my fingers through my hair, overwhelmed by what I was reading.

"Stallings, you old son of a gun..." I said to no one in particular. "You've really outdone yourself this time."

_______________________________________________

Rest of roster (excluding latest signings) coming in next few posts. The wrestlers with blank themes, obviously, are the ones I need help with. If you PM'ed me about helping out, and you know who you are, I'll be taking suggestions for those two gentlemen.

Special thanks to the re-render artists, especially jhd1, for helping me out with some special request re-renders, like Travis Century.

Thanks, MrOnu. The TCW signing might have to wait a little bit...but it's coming sometime down the road, that's for sure.

And I always want TCW to fail...so this feeling is not new to me.

Truely a masterpiece in the making. I really like your writing style. I prefer the backstage stuff and out of the ring writing. Really makes the shows pop I think. Cannot wait to see how he first PPV goes.

Trevor

Thanks! Just wait until I get to the shows...I actually enjoy writing them ten times more than writing these...

Didn't expect Travis Century on the roster at all; methinks he's being held on to so he can become a manager or something similar.

He's still got some pop in those old bones. And he'd be one kick-tail manager or color commentator in the future, that's for sure. Win-win for me, is how I saw it.

Hmm, where does Reed fall in terms of face/heel? He seems to lean towards face, but All I Do Is Win suits a heel more.

There are no faces or heels in CZCW...technically. There are a good bit of tweeners in the company.

The thought is that fans are going to cheer for who they want, regardless of turn (see Punk, CM). There are a few straight up faces, a few straight up heels, and a good bit of tweeners. Anyone can wrestle anyone, against Stallings' wishes.

Oh well.

Ash Campbell

Hometown:
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Theme:

Style:
East Coast Cruiserweight

Finishers:
Ashes to Ashes (Frankensteiner to Split-Legged Corkscrew Moonsault), Shooting Star Press

Ash Campbell is the straight-edge savior of CZCW, or so he claims. To some, he's one of the most innovative high-flyers to hit a company that's known to produce some of the best in the world. To others, he's just a loudmouth punk with no respect for the business. He doesn't play into his obvious wrestling pedigree at all...in fact, he doesn't like to talk about it. He'd rather talk about that he's the best that has ever been in this company, and he is going to change it forever. He believes in himself and only himself, and he's determined to take out anyone in his way.

"Someone told me that Ash is legit straight-edge. I didn't know that. Whether it's really him or just playing a character...one that I turned down when I first started out in this business...he connects with the fans and always elicits a reaction. He's got great skills. If he can get his performance levels up a bit, he can be a future champion here and anywhere else he may go."

Remmy Skye

Hometown:
Atlanta, Georgia

Theme:

Style:
Hypnotic Cruiserweight

Finishers:
Skye Diver (Swanton Bomb)

Few people can go in the ring with as much reckless abandon as Remmy Skye can. A lot of suicidal cruiserweights like him simply go nuts in the ring, but he doesn't. With a hypnotic form of grace, Remmy Skye puts on a show every time he wrestles, painting a high-flying masterpiece in the ring. A former CZCW champion, Skye has a cult of fans that follow his every move. And, recently, his every word...he's been cutting more and more promos, combining that infectious charisma with a decent handle on the mic.

"Remmy Skye is a nut. In the ring, backstage, on his Twitter...whatever. He is one crazy dude that can pick you apart without you even knowing it. And when a ladder comes into play, he's the automatic favorite. I don't care if there are twenty other people that even get a head start on the ladder. He still will take you down and make his way to the top. His love for ladders and getting high, no pun intended, is something that the fans love."

The Cali Dragons

Hometown:
San Jose, California and San Fransisco, California

Theme:

Style:
Hard-Hitting Hybrid (Puroresu and Japanese Junior)

Finishers:
Frankie- P-Clutch (Cobra Clutch Legsweep), Perfect Parity (Slingshot Powerbomb)

Mikey- Dragon Whip (Dragon Legscrew Whip), Scything Side Kick (Spinning Heel Kick)

The Cali Dragons- Dragon Dropkick (Slingshot Catapult to Missile Dropkick)

One of the best non-Big Two tag teams in America, The Cali Dragons were formed in CZCW after Mikey James was released from RIPW. These two are world-class wrestlers by themselves, and are doubly deadly when they are the same side. Former champions together and separately in the company, Perez and James are on the verge of superstardom. Their impressive chemistry and massive arsenal of moves make them threats to anyone that stands in their way.

"I'm uber-excited about our tag team division, and these two are a main reason why. You don't have to be garbage as singles wrestlers to make it as a tag team. These two men have gained tons of success together and on their own, and only time will tell when they push through in the main event scene...and it will most likely be at the same time. These two men are electric when they are in the ring together, no matter the opponents."

CZCW Tag Team Champions

Hometown:

Theme:

Style:

Finishers:
Al- Ankle Brace (Ankle Lock)

Marc- Cross Armbreaker, Deadly Heel Hook

The Shoot Club consists of two of the baddest men in professional wrestling. With skills and moves that truly blur the line between real and worked, Shoot Club has exploded in popularity in The Zone. They bring a totally new facet of realism into CZCW's product, and they rode that advantage all the way to the tag titles. Their current reign is longest in company history, and they can and will use deadly force to protect their thrones.

"If you stumbled upon either of these men outside of the ring, you would try your hardest not to tick them off. These guys have worked their tails off in the past few years, and have been justly rewarded. While they aren't on the same level as The Cali Dragons...yet...they are well on their way. Marc has surprisingly become a decent talker, too...gotta keep that in mind."

Masked Cougar and Snap Dragon

The Lords of Xtreme

Hometown:
Phoenix, Arizona and San Antonio, Texas

Theme:

Style:
LuchaResu

Finishers:
Cougar- Cougar Pounce (Flying Crossbody), I Am Cougar...Hear Me Roar (Tilt-a-Whirl Headscissors Takedown)

Snap- Dragon's Breath (Snapmare DDT-to-Running Dropkick)

These two masked warriors both joined the company in 2006, pulling influences from Japan and Mexico. This style has become a staple in Japan via WLW, but American fans get their taste of this as well. Cougar and Snap both have seemingly unlimited amounts of speed as they hop, skip, or bounce their way around the ring, destroying everything in their path. They are kamikaze wrestlers, going at a frenzied pace that has electrified the Coastal Zone for years. Although they've yet to secure their dominance as a tag team, both men are at the top of the Xtreme title chase constantly. Don't blink, you might just miss the next awesome move from the Lords of Xtreme.

"These men might just die in the ring, the way they go at it. And I like that. They seem to know what they're doing, and they keep the fans entertained. Also, their suicidal (and sometimes homicidal) moves haven't seriously injured anyone yet. You've got to count that as a bonus, people."

El Mítico Jr.

Hometown:
Mexico City, Mexico

Theme:

Style:
Luchador

Finishers:
The Tres Amigos (Three Straight German Suplexes), Northern Lights Suplex

El Mítico Jr. is a fourth-generation wrestler. That's right. FOUR GENERATIONS. This guy is a wrestling master with the skill set of guys decades beyond his age of twenty. He is a technical assassin with a no-nonsense style in the ring. He doesn't rely on gimmicks or cheesy names for his moves...he gets in the ring and puts on a clinic, no matter what. As old-school as they come. He was picked up on a tour show in south Texas, as he wants to break from the constant cut-throat world that is the lucha scene in Mexico. This luchador will be a star one day, no doubt.

"I still can't believe this guy wrestles like he does. This is in his blood...everyone in his family has primed him for this moment. He's all about the old-school way of the tecnico and will defend its honor no matter what. Underrated on the mic, too."

Love that you brought in Mitico. By far one of my favorite workers in the C-Verse. Oddly enough, I also used Ole! as his theme when I first debuted him. Immediately afterward, though, I realized it would work far better for Amazing Fire Fly, who I'm also hoping you have on roster.

AFF is not on the first roster, sadly. He is one of those guys that are on my shortlist to replace any who might leave, though. Him and Kamikaze Christian Vars...plus a few other hidden gems in the indy scene.

And Ole! has to be his theme. I mean, it should be every luchador's theme...

Sammy Bach's theme tune must be Cult Of Personality. Just thought I would share that thought. :p

But on a more relevant note, not sure how Mitico will get along with Ole, he seems too serious for it, but it could grow on me.
